Reviews for Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan
Review 1:We love every bits of the stay. The staff are very attentive to details - like our meal time, day trip itinerary - so they can work around our time to make the room, prepare bed, and dinner. They have done their very best to make ourselves feel at home. Our personal attendant Emiko had done a very good job to look after us ie prepared our dinner, drinks, afternoon welcome drinks and snacks (for 2 days!! Thought it was meant for day 1 check in only - so this is another element of surprise that we like!) I would go back to this accommodation in future if I ever visit Takayama again! For now I'm going to miss this place a lot!!!
Review 2:No.
Review 3:Food is dedicated prepared and tasteful. Service is warmhearted. Onsen in three different places for women is a special experience. Relaxing and traditional. We strongly recommend this hotel to friends.
Review 4:The onsen location is awesome, unfortunately the only thing that disappoint me was the quality of the water used. As soon as I entered the public bath, I smelled a hint of chlorine. I thought the water would be from a natural spring but I didn't smell any sulfur or the likes that are from a natural spring. But overall, the temperature and environment of the onsen are indeed the best spots to relax. I do especially love the 100 year old Meiji era building though!!
Review 5:Firstly, my family and I were late to the check-in as we have changed course throught the trip, nevertheless, the ryokan staff waited outside and helped direct us into the parking spot. While doing so, a few of the female staffs (dressed in kimono) opened the door and welcomed us into the lobby and one male staff played the Japanese-war-drum instrument signalling our arrival. I was thrown off-guard, as I've been to many ryokans and hotels and never have I felt more attended during this late/huge entrance. Proceeding right to our room, the fresh fragrance of the tatami floor warmly welcomed each family members as we walked right in. And on top the tea table, which is situated conveniently right in the middle of the room, there were a pile of booklets and advisory leaflets to teach us the etiquette of ryokans and onsen public baths. I thought to myself, "this is the perfect place for first timers in Japan!! What a thoughtful ryokan!!" Our hostess spoke English and as well as Japanese. And I loved the fact she does her best to attend to us and asked about our day trip plans and where we planned to visit. She particularly took note and prepared a brochure and an English map and tourists spots of the town we'd told her. The breakfast and dinner was exceptionally excellent and tasty. As our hostess had arranged us to eat different cuisine each night (3) during our stay. First night was Kaiseki Ryori, second was Omakase Sushi Course, and third was Hida Beef Steak Western Course. And I'd say all the courses of each meal is immaculately prepared by the chef, as each platter looked beautifully like an art. In conclusion, the service of our hostess, and the politeness of the staff in the ryokan are top notch. The environment itself make us felt like VIP, the stay is very comfortable and I'd recommend more people to stay here.
Review 6:Amazing staff, great location in Takayama. We travelled with young children and the staff were very helpful and kind - even thinking about throwing a little birthday celebration. Food was delicious.
Review 7:Very overpriced in my opinion. The onsen is small and no view at all. I have booked a private semi open bath which is soaking in a bath tub with very limited views. No point wasting the money. Check out time is too early. The staff couldn't really speak English. Everything is chargeable..including coffee at the reception even though you are a hotel guest and had paid premium price. Not worth for the high price paid. The property is quite old and there is an insecticide smell near the lift lobby.
Review 8:The food is quite tasty and the location is convenient to walk around the old town. The pick up and drop off service. The amenities provided at the onsen bath area.
Review 9:If you are looking for a false faked travel expierance than this is the place for you.
Review 10:Nothing. The hotel is much more expensive than what you get for. It looks and feels like a tourise trap.
Review 11:We spent one night in his hotel on our honeymoon. Our room was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The public baths are excellent. The Japanese dinner and breakfast too were brilliant. Overall, the service we received was amazing - better than anywhere we stayed in Japan.
Review 12:This ryokan is very neat in services, room design and all aspects. Highly impressed with every details they offer to clients. The hundred years house where one of the onsen is located, is my favorite. Dinner and breakfast were so wonderful. And yet hotel staffs were definitely well trained with warm hospitality.
Review 13:The Hida beef dinner required being transported to another location and was not particularly special.
Review 14:Service was great and room amenities were also outstanding. Location near the old town is wonderful. Tha sushi dinner was also one of the best we had in Japan
Review 15:Room was too hot..difficult to get temperature lower. Admittedly we didn't ask hotel staff to help us with this but normally we are quite capable to adjust the temperature ourselves
Review 16:Good location for the ninja temple (and hotel kindly made the reservation for us highly recommendable ). Excellent price /quality balance. Bar / happy hour and food excellent. Very nice staff.
Review 17:Private bath is not equal to private onsen
Review 18:They give us a surprise on our wedding anniversary date. Room is clean and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner are perfect.
Review 19:They charge rental for child's yukata 500 yen. most other ryokan is free of charge. Also for my son's towel, another charge of 300 yen, and it's not even towel, it's more of a facetowel!
Review 20:The location was close to the old town. Onsen was just ok. Dinner kaiseki excellent. Breakfast was good too.
Review 21:No complains at all
Review 22:The breakfast and dinner are excellent and really tasty . The staff are very friendly and helpful and care for the guests to the smallest detail.
Review 23:The western portion of our mixed Japanese/western room was very dated (eg 90s era furniture).
Review 24:The staff were wonderful! Perfect Japanese hospitality. The food, both in room kaiseki and the downstairs sushi bar were also of high quality.
Review 25:The rooms are basic for the price.
Review 26:Superb experience. Dinners and Breakfasts are elaborate and make the stay worth the price. The staff are very accommodating (spoke English well enough).
Review 27:Can't find a thing to complain about. The high price perhaps.
Review 28:Free valet parking. Impeccable service. Excellent rooms and facility. Excellent food.
Review 29:Breakfast - the western was not quite western!
Review 30:Very "westerner" friendly, great location and decent food (but not comparable to Wanosato, which had excellent food).
Review 31:nothing! Everything is perfect!
Review 32:Food, service, location...everything is perfect. A friendly staff was waiting for us at the JR station upon arrival and from that moment, we just need to relax and enjoy. Highly recommended!
Review 33:The food was overall very nice, but if there was anything that could be improved, it would probably be the food. I enjoyed the creativity and degustation kind of format, but I prefer taste over look and composition. Whereas I did feel they compromised the taste of the food, to make it look more classy / interesting / creative. The main meal was always nice, but the cold dishes and soups looked better than they tasted.
Review 34:The service was truly fantastic. Treated like royalty here. Few options for Onsens around the place too as well as within the ryokan. The variety of food was good too.
Review 35:A staff named Okaeme, dressed me in Yukata personally! Mdm Erisu, the landlady showered us with great hospitality and attentiveness. We felt so welcomed after traveling for 15 hrs from Singapore to get there!
Review 36:Different colors and patterns of beautiful yukata free of rental charge for non local guests, delicious Japanese dinner and breakfast, friendly and helpful staff
Review 37:Welcoming and helpful staff. Superb sushi meal which included so much more than mixed sushi (tempura, salads, veg, desert)and the quality of the fish and the skill of the chef was 5 star. The traditional Japanese dinner on our first night was very good too!
Review 38:Good could be a bit more spacious. Counted to other ryokan we stayed, we expect better food (in term of variety offered)
Review 39:Staffs' politeness, location, spacious room, comfort bed, and onsen&yukata experience.
Review 40:Great stay. Staff was phenomenal. Location great. The comfort is only penalized because it's a ryokan so you have to expect to be a bit out of comfort on a futon, but room was nice and clean. Nice hot spring spa as well.
Review 41:First, there's hotel staff came to pick us up at the bus station.(you just inform the time you'll arrive) and the staffs are really polite and take care of us with a warm welcome. I love the experience of traditional Japanese like the Tatami room, yukata, and the meal here (which i recommend you to select include breakfast and dinner in the hotel cost, so u can experience traditional japanese meal with the famous local food like "Hida beef, miso")
Review 42:check out time is bit early(10:00) ..and hotel does not allow even one hour late...
Review 43:everything is so good, good location good quality of food and very good service and it is wonderful to have pick up service even it is very near to the bus station, it does make us feel so warm that we do not look at the map and wondering around for 1st visit to the town.
Review 44:Most staff can speak English, have great hosptiality, remember our name and room number though we just stay for 1 night. The breakfast and dinner are superb. We are being served in a private room in the restaurant though at the beginning we expect in room dining. However it is as good as or even better than in room dining. Hot spring is very nice. Pick up services from train station is also good.
Review 45:Ryokan had no grounds and the decor and furnishings in room and out need some serious updating. Onsite onsen very small and access was given to another onsen but it was across the street. That said, literally 1 minute away and they escorted guests across. There was some pressure to have rooms made up during breakfast (latest 8.30am) whether you wanted or not, to prepare for next guests.
Review 46:we stayed at 3 places in takayama and this ryokan's location is superb for exploring old town. Meals (breakfast and dinner) were excellent, generous, and well presented and served.
Review 47:That is a bit odd that the toilet and the bathroom are separated. And the freezer is locked before we check out. We have to call the staff to open it and get out stuff back.
Review 48:The room is so beautiful and the dinner and breakfast are perfect.
Review 49:This Ryokan was the best experience of my trip in Japan. I found this Ryokan with hospitality. The location is in the heart of old town and the morning local market is a minute walk. The manager (Landlady) offered us the greatest experience. Dinner and Breakfast, Location, atomosphere and staff...everything was perfect. I would surely stay in this Ryokan again in the future.
Review 50:Nothing! Pity we only stayed a night.
Review 51:The location cannot be faulted and our hostess made us felt like royalties during our stay. The decor, baths, rooms, and most of all, the kaiseki dinner and breakfast was absolutely amazing.
Review 52:The staff here are so gentle, helpful and kind. English is spoken well. Our room had a view of the mountains, always spotless and the food in included in half board is exquisite.
