Castello Di Monterone

Castello Di Monterone descritpion
Hotel Castello Di Monterone sells fast on our site. On a hill overlooking the green valley between Assisi and Perugia, Castello Di Monterone takes its name from the area where it is located. It features a restaurant with a panoramic terrace.
The first reference to the castle was discovered in Perugia’s historic archives in a document dating back to the 13th-century. This historic establishment is now a comfortable hotel.
Guests can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a tranquil, relaxing environment both inside and outside the castle walls. At Castello Di Monterone, guests can enjoy peace and quiet in the cozy library, or socialize in front of the fireplace in one of 2 lounges.
The hotel’s spa includes a sauna, Turkish bath and a swimming pool with a hydro-massage corner. In the evenings, guests can relax under the stars and enjoy the city lights of Perugia’s ancient skyline.

Reviews for Castello Di Monterone
Review 1:everything! The friendliness of the staff, clean, the fireplaces were excellent for just relaxing and having some wine, the Wi-Fi was very good, the rooms were warm during winter!
Review 2:First room was too small
Review 3:After upgraded to larger room everything was fine. The superior room was very comfortable with good bathroom. Views over the valley are spectacular. 14th C castle has been superbly restored. Lovely log fires.
Review 4:We could not get the heat turned off in our room as they have radiators for heat and they were already turned on for the fall. Room was therefore too warm. We prefer open windows to achieve.
Review 5:Beautiful facilities (-renovated old castle)and location. Staff very helpful even to serving us breakfast at 5am for an early departure
Review 6:Some of the personnel in the restaurant have still something to learn about customer service
Review 7:The hotel facilities are fantastic. The room was quite small but this was compensated by a nice private terrace. The restaurant was good. The meny could have offered more alternatives. Breakfast was excellent. The personnel was kind and helpful, a special thanks to Tomas in the restaurant, he was marvellous.
Review 8:Castello in excellent condition and restored really well. Fantastic ciews from all areas. Loved the tunnel entrance to restaurant. Food was excellent.
Review 9:This was our second time at the Castle and we loved it again. The staff is great, very friendly, the room was spotless, the restaurant is excellent and the breakfast was great with lots of choices. Would not hesitate to come back.
Review 10:Out party of four all agreed that the beds were exceptionally hard and uncomfortable.
Review 11:The Castello di Monterone is a beautifully adapted historic property situated in a relatively rural setting just outside of Perugia. The staff was courteous and very helpful. The Castello's excellent restaurant offered a welcome dining option after several days of touring around Umbria.
Review 12:We loved everything, but it is assumed that guests will have a car - we didn't. It is possible to walk to Perugia, down the road, in under an hour - but parts of the road are dangerous for pedestrians. We did find a road, just past the cemetery, where it is possible to walk safely amongst olive groves - this was beautiful. A pamphlet giving a brief history of the castle would be a good idea.
Review 13:Absolutely loved the garden and the panoramic views. The medieval castle has been beautifully restored and extended and is well cared for. The travertine marble bathroom was the height of luxury. The adjoining restaurant, Il Gradale, accessible through a tunnel or via the garden, provided splendid meals using local produce and also provided a wonderful breakfast. Lovely staff, without exceptio. We thought we had died and gone to heaven.
Review 14:It's a real castle with original furniture. Amazing view to Perugia and Umbrian hils. We've been in the room on ground floor with little patio. It was magical. There is a little pool and SPA, which can complete your relaxing stay
Review 15:As is usual in Europe, the bathrooms while lovely , are small.
Review 16:Beautiful location with fantastic views, nice restaurant with deluxe included breakfast, close to the Perugia, excellent overall
Review 17:Swimming pool was closed with no prior warning. We went to this hotel because it had a pool and we couldn't use it. The towels in our bathroom were dirty and there were lots of spiders in the shower and sink.
Review 18:Location was excellent, views were spectacular and the food was great.
Review 19:This property is immaculately kept and the room we stayed in was excellent in every way. Food here was just amazing. The restaurant serves fantastic breakfast and it still impresses you at dinner time with a small but inventive and outstanding menu. The staff was attentive, professional and friendly. The view of Perugia from the property was magical. It was an unforgettable stay for our honeymoon!
Review 20:Need a car with good satnav to get into Perugia, then fine.
Review 21:Historic castle, small rooms but full of character. Excellent views across the valley. Good choices at breakfast and quality dinner.
Review 22:Would have like better breakfast cereal as only sugar puffs or cornflakes but lovely bread fruit and cakes and prosecco!
Review 23:Beautiful location great style loved the terrace restaurant Lots of fascinating rooms and lounges beautifully furnished and restored. Top quality accessories in rooms albeit small for superior room. Had a view of the courtyard but not worth the extra money.
Review 24:The directions and getting to the hotel late at night was difficult. I am not sure that is the hotel's fault.
Review 25:The staff was excellent. We were lost getting to the hotel late at night. We called and Claudia could not have been more helpful directing us to the location. She walked us each to our room and could not have been more helpful
Review 26:There is nothing not to like but travelers may want to be aware that the private setting of the castle means you are not able to walk to places of interest or other restaurants. We did walk up and down the road at sunset to see if we could catch a better view, but the view of the sunset from the castle is truly the best. I'm sure if you wanted to explore, the accommodating staff would help you with a taxi or driver. We had a car, and the staff was terrific with providing directions. If you are looking for a place to relax for a couple days to restore your energy before you continue your adventures, this is the place!
Review 27:From the minute we arrived at the castle we loved it. The entire property is fun to explore and beautifully restored. The staff is very helpful, the views are gorgeous, the restaurant is wonderful, the rooms are extremely comfortable, everything is very clean and well-maintained, the pool is a terrific place to relax ... I highly recommend a night or two, especially if you want to splurge a little, rest and feel pampered.
Review 28:This property ticks every box sophisticated, unique beautiful pool and restaurant with flawless service from the staff. Views are to die for! Will be back
Review 29:The food. For starters, there is not a single meal for children. The easiest and most common dish would've been pizza. Nope. Instead we had to order for delivery and had him eat it with us at the table while we ate our dinner. The dining tables were dirty for every meal that we were there. The food was okay, but the dessert was horrible. I ordered a Tira Misu, and what did I get...a frozen stick with a lady finger and covered in chocolate. A chocolate covered frozen banana would've been more ideal. It could've been a week old, who knows. The best dish was the pasta with truffles! I gave the facilities a lower mark because the dining room was constantly dirty, dirty chairs, tables, dusty side tables...always.
Review 30:It is a very unique setting and creative room layouts. It was very comfortable and the staff was super nice.
Review 31:Complicated access, very small swimming pool for a quite high price and the staff of the restaurant nearly unfriendly
Review 32:The situation, the garden, the beauty, the small choice for breakfast but the top quality of the products.
Review 33:Food was good, but menu limited if staying for 3 nights or more. No Mueseli for breakfast as an option. Lacks an early breakfast option if catching an early flight. Don't drink the local Rose wine. The Pool is very small if travelleling with a family or if you are a keen swimmer.
Review 34:The room (Drago) very comfortable with almost a private terrace. The views and peaceful location are a highlight.
Review 35:Nothing at all - our whole experience was positive and pleasing
Review 36:Everything - unusual and very special castle building, cool rooms, great views, good staff and a wonderful location. Near to Perugia,Assisi and Orvieto.
Review 37:Nothing to complain about at all!
Review 38:Magical stay at the Castle! Must do experience - very romantic and relaxing! Pure luxury! Loved our stay and were made to feel very special during our honeymoon and my birthday. Highly recommend!
Review 39:Only negative note, orange juice at breakfast was very much watered down, but it's really being fussy in an otherwise superb stay
Review 40:Absolutely superb location overlooking Perugia. A great restaurant, and a splendid historical building with much character. Delightful staff...
Review 41:Superior room was very small Discount offered for double room did not apply to us as a couple Breakfast was late and service in the morning very slow
Review 42:Stunning location
Review 43:To leave this amazing place!
Review 44:Too much things! Here is a brief resume: the staff was amazing and even gave us advices like a professional guide. The owner was extremely kind and made us visit all the castle while explaining to us the history of this amazing place. There was a free shuttle for Perugia center during the Umbria Jazz Festival that we used. It was very convenient to move without worrying for the parking in the center and also there were late trips. If you go there you should definitely eat at the restaurant. It was excellent and the view was amazing! One of the best hotel we stayed in!
Review 45:That we only stayed two nights!!!
Review 46:Beautiful! Spectacular environment. So happy we discovered the accommodation on our way south from Northern Italy. We shall tell friends in New Zealand about this wonderful hideaway
Review 47:The worst part was that there were a lot of bees in the pool area.
Review 48:The staff was excellent, the property was beautiful, and the accommodations were truly magical.
Review 49:Nothing - all good
Review 50:Amazing old castle set in it's own grounds was simply stunning, great views over the surrounding countryside. Very good restaurant which we ate in and very good breakfast. Staff were very helpful and parking was free
Review 51:Magical accomodation on a hilltop just out of Perugia. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. The rooms are well appointed and very private. The restaurant delivers amazing food the experience made even more special by the wonderful waiters Thomas and Simon. We will be back!!
Review 52:When we booked, they had a Michelin-starred restaurant which closed bythe time we came. The ordinary restaurant was ok, but the food did not'sing'. For us this was the one significant weakness.
Review 53:Wonderfully romantic, beautiful place
Review 54:I couldn't stay longer!
Review 55:It was absolutely stunning.....the grounds, the rooms and the castle itself were magical! I'll be back and next time for longer!
Review 56:the first night we had a problem with our air conditioning but we were moved for th remainder of our stay to a better room and it was fine.
Review 57:Everything was wonderful, food very very good staff great and facilities excellent
Review 58:The place itself is most impressive, the Castle, the gardens and the superb restaurant was the icing on the cake - one of our best stays in all of Italy.
Review 59:The air conditioning had a hard time keeping the room cool, but to be fair, it was about 95 degrees and it is a castle from the 1300's.
Review 60:The pool and the hotel staff were great! the restaurant was excellent and the views of the country were amazing.
Review 61:We had such a wonderful stay at Castello Di monterone. The rooms were beautiful. The food was fantastic ( in fact my favourite meal in Italy which is saying a lot) and the staff were fantastic (I would like to especially thank Thomas in the restaurant and Claudia at the reception). I would recommend anyone to stay here. Beautiful view from the restaurant too.
Review 62:Absolutely nothing. This place was like a dream.
Review 63:Castello di Monterone was a once in a lifetime experience staying in a perfectly restored Umbrian castle! The staff was very attentive and the accommodations impeccable. Grounds are quiet. Restaurant and included breakfast was fantastic. Easy access to the autostrada back to Rome.
Review 64:Nothing
Review 65:Loved the beauty of it, the grounds, the view and so many places to just sit and relax with some food or just a bottle of wine and enjoy the view.
Review 66:Only one of the receptionists was really helpful, the rest were almost unwelcoming. Location was disappointing in terms of access to the city.
Review 67:The atmosphere of the old building, the view and the garden. Food for dinner was good.
Review 68:Location is difficult to find and to navigate to and from on day trips. Bring a Garmin or i phone with a map locator
Review 69:Beautiful property, friendly and accommodating staff, a most unique experience and great value for the money. Would be an ideal location for a destination wedding or family get together to explore a most beautiful area of Italy. Easy to use car travel or train to visit small Umbrian towns on day trips and return to the castle for dinner, wine and conversation
Review 70:Seems a small point, but the bed was bordering on too firm. To be fair, however, most beds in Europe were similar.
Review 71:We spent 6 nights in this lovingly restored 13th/18th century castle. The room was a bit small but efficiently appointed. The bathroom and shower were luxuriously lined in limestone and comfortable. But the view from our window was amazing... The river valley and Perugia in the distance. Although a bit tricky to find, GPS got us there. And after a day of touring, each evening began with a glass of wine by the pool watching the sunset over Perugia. Then a delicious dinner in the comfortable restaurant assisted by very attentive staff. A diverse and tasty breakfast started our next day of touring. This was the perfect location for visiting the many historic cities and towns in Umbria.
Review 72:Immaculate grounds in a beautiful Umbrian setting. Staff attentive and friendly without being ever present. Facilities were perfect yet not overdone, wonderful experience.
Review 73:The way the castle is renovated, the whole site looks very beautiful, good modern facilities in the room, nice views over surrounding area, very good restaurant!
Review 74:A spectacularly converted castle sympathetically restored and turned into a well run hotel with all modern facilities for a comfortable stay. We stayed for 4 nights in a beautiful room with modern en suite facilities. Nothing was too much trouble for the multi lingual staff who were consistently helpful and went out of their way to ensure the comfort of our stay. The hotel Restaurant, Gradale, produced delicious dishes. My favourite being Octopus, which I had never tried before but was superbly cooked and tasted delicious. A somewhat limited menu for anything longer than a weeks stay but it suited our short stay perfectly. We can thoroughly recommend this 'romantic' castle hotel for couples both young and somewhat mature. A most pleasant experience in wonderful surroundings.
Review 75:The experience of being in a castle overlooking Perugia is once in a lifetime. The breakfast was among the best in Italy, everything fresh and delicious. The staff was helpful and attentive. The rooms are great, some people might feel that it is somewhat rustic, but the felling of being in a castle far outweighs any negatives in my opinion. Another important consideration is the grounds themselves are amazing. There are gardens and incredible views everywhere and you can even go up on the roof for more views, spectacular!
Review 76:This is an unbelievable property. A meticulously restored medieval castle with courtyards and gardens, but will all the modern facilities. Great breakfast too! Amazing place.
Review 77:...and there comes the call from the staff with "sorry, we can not accept you"
Review 78:Night. Dark. Navigation not working properly, so we are 5 hours in the car. Using booking com and finding best plase to stay according to review score...
Review 79:My husband and I had the great chance to experience a night stay at this splendid place. The castle is located up the hill between Assisi and Perugia. The location is convenient to visit both cities,20 minutes from Assisi and 5 minutes from the center of Perugia. The views from the castle are amazing !!! You definitely need a car to stay here. We stayed in one of the Standard (classic) rooms. The room was finely decorated in middle ages style, the bed very comfortable, and the bathroom had all the necessary toiletries plus bathrobe and slippers, also a complimentary bag with toothbrush etc. Breakfast was very good. Everything about this hotel is great, the price, the atmosphere, the decor but above all the staff. Claudia at the reception exceptional!! She gave us all directions needed for our visits and what not to miss. What can I say we will definitely return!!
Review 80:Problems with internet that were fixed.
Review 81:Its a real castle with a view of Perugia that looked like a Renaissance painting, wonderful breakfasts and gourmet restaurant for dinner. Everything is first class.
Review 82:Room was a little stuffy due to very hot towell rail in bathroom which could not be regulated.
Review 83:Breakfast Comfort Views Staff was fabulous, very helpful. Setting, trees, birds. Distant rooster crowing, dog barking, gave a lovely country feel.
Review 84:We were a bit surprised with how small the room was, since we had booked a superior one, but it was still very nice. I guess when you hear castle you think huge and overall it is smaller than we had imagined. The wifi signal was weak in the room and in other locations. FYI location is too far from Perugia without a car, but perhaps the hotel can help with that.
Review 85:The food was amazing!!! Truly some of the best we had during our trip. We ate dinner and of course breakfast, and both were phenomenal. The staff was attentive and helpful. The grounds were well maintained and beautiful. Parking was a breeze. Nice views.
Review 86:This place has a great atmosphere, we found we had a terrific bathroom, and we very much enjoyed the restaurant which is located in the basement of the hotel. Very fast wi-fi.
Review 87:The spa services were not well explained - but good when you figured out what to do.
Review 88:Hotel situated in lovely garden - great views over surrounding countryside, room we had was comfortable, and great breakfast including Prosecco if you wanted it. Would come here again.
Review 89:A bit out of the way, but a bus is available, it is also walking distance to Perugia taking about 55 mins
Review 90:Everything! the restaurant was excellent and we ate there two out of the three nights we were there.
Review 91:The pool could have been cleaner. Price of the best rooms is overrated compared to the basic rooms.
Review 92:Great atmosphere, very romantic. The Restaurant is worth trying.
Review 93:In the delux double suit, there were no mirrors in the bedroom, only in the bathroom. For 2 people getting ready, at the same time, you really do, need a mirror in the bedroom.
Review 94:The location was magnificant. The chef was incredible. The accomadations were amazing. Loved everything.
Review 95:The Castello was beautiful. We enjoyed sipping wine pool side and eating our breakfast over looking the Umbrian country-side. I would absolutely recommend this hotel.
Review 96:Lighting in the room could be a bit brighter.
Review 97:Location -- a mountaintop overlooking the city of Perugia. Staff -- excellent service. Coffee and rolls were available before our early morning departure. Beautiful, peaceful, property!
Review 98:A real-life castle, beautifully upgraded with modern amenities, a gorgeous panoramic view of the Tuscan valley, and a Michelin-star restaurant downstairs! This was the highlight of our honeymoon to Italy.
Review 99:small rooms only one suitcase stand breakfast average
Review 100:beautiful property with great views small, intimate quiet very helpful staff short taxi ride to center of Perugia; no parking hassles well-appointed rooms
Review 101:The service was poor. Reception staff were friendly but service at breakfast and dinner lacked warmth and efficiency. The quality of our meal on the first night was very good but in the second night it was poor. We let the hotel know this and they offered an apology. Breakfast service on both days was poor.
Review 102:The location and building were stunning. The rooms were lovely and it felt like you were somewhere very special. The views are to die for and the castle is beautifully restored.
Review 103:Location was hard to find. Value for the money was just average.
Review 104:This would be a fun place to go with school age children. I think they would love exploring!
Review 105:Staff in restaurant were a bit slow to start in morning so one morning we had to wait.
Review 106:This Hotel is in a beautiful location in Perugia. It is very peaceful and quiet yet easy to commute anywhere. Staff at reception are very helpful and courteous. Would certainly recommend and we will hopefully return! Thank you
Review 107:we loved everything
Review 108:We loved everything. Staff very friendly and helpful. Also loved the restaurant ,and the fact you could have a massage on site as well. This was my best accommodation experience of our 3 weeks in Europe.
Review 109:We were in an annexe building with paper thin walls. There was only one restaurant and the bar had restricted hours. Lack of comfortable seating areas. Breakfast staff disinterested
Review 110:Excellent location with views
Review 111:The location is very dangerous with bad winding roads. So bad we refused to leave for fear of having to come back in the dark and getting lost once yet again. The food was great for lunch, but poor for our tastes for dinner. Very eclectic and not consistent with the area.
Review 112:Beautiful view, nice rooms.
Review 113:The hillside location provided amazing views over Perugia and surrounding area. The castle has been sensitively converted into a fabulous hotel with stunning grounds; it is a haven of tranquility. The restaurant is superb, providing first class food and service, otherwise it is only a 10 min car journey to the many bars and restaurants of Perugia. We felt as if we had been transported to another world for a few days. Highly recommended.
Review 114:The only negatives were the mosquito bites (but you'd suffer this everywhere else so nothing to do with the hotel) and that the bed was firm (but again, we stayed in four different hotels all over Umbria on this trip and the beds were all the same!). In other words, no real negatives. An outstanding example of how to do it right. Well done!
Review 115:The castle is simply stunning. Sympathetically restored and every new feature perfectly suited. The room we had overlooked the valley and Perugia in the distance and it took our breath away. The meal at the restaurant was also fantastic. The pool, sauna and steam room were 'small but perfectly formed' - this is a great option to either include in a touring holiday where a relaxing break within reach of the crowds (eg Perugia) is needed (as with our own stay) or simply a romantic relaxing break away from it all. Perfect!
Review 116:an umbrian retreat! we are a crazy, hard-working couple, and we needed to "decompress." the cozy, exquisite confines of this castle, it's views, it's food, it's staff, the moody weather and the scenes outside the castle windows, the jazz in perugia, dips in the pools~ all of this could not have been more perfect. ~ cameron and tiffany clark
Review 117:Daughter was a bit freaked out by medieval ambience.
Review 118:Absolutely unique castle architecture converted into a hotel with maze like access to rooms adds fun to experience. Amazing medieval ambience!
Review 119:Nothing!
Review 120:Great location Excellent food - really good choice on buffet breakfast and Michelin star restaurant Staff very helpful Lovely views from our room
Review 121:This is just a fabulous hotel at a discrete but totally manageable distance from the center of the lovely Perugia. It's in a combo of an old castle and new facilities designed to blend beautifully with the old. Rooms are great, service terrific,, views wonderful. Just a great place to stay and our room, looking out the back, was entirely reasonable for what we got. The restaurant is also excellent although you will want to eat in Perugia and surrounding area as well, including the agriturismi. The hotel was the perfect resting place during the Umbia Jazz Festival - itself a terrific event. And it's within easy shot of Gubbio, Todi and all the other great Umbrian towns and not to far from Florence and Siena as well.
Review 122:We booked the restaurant for dinner after an excellent lunch. We were a party of eight and they struggled to cope. The wine, which we had enjoyed at lunch and ordered for the evening was no longer available! The wine list was unnecessarily enormous so we had to reorder. The food was good until the main course which was poor. On a more positive note I am sure a smaller group would have been more successful.
Review 123:Fabulous location, stunning views, personal and interesting building. Rooms were small but tastefully equipped and beautiful gardens with private areas to sit. We had a restaurant disaster that was quietly and satisfactorily resolved which was much appreciated.
Review 124:Nothing.
Review 125:Absolutely stunning location and grounds. Historic castle with all modern day amenities (without spoiling the ambience of the age of the castle). On site restaurant was the best dinner that we had in Italy. Friendly, efficient staff.
Review 126:Restaurant was unavailable due to a function
Review 127:Beautiful setting friendly staff very comfortable room
Review 128:everything - lovely room, fantastic service, amazing views, room's details as per website and even better
