Reviews for Ryokan Murayama

Review 1:We had dinner and breakfast here, if you opt for the breakfast you might want to consider getting the 'western' breakfast. A number of the breakfast foods were the same as the dinner the previous night. Was quite a way out of town, and the buses stop around 4-5pm.

Review 2:Older facility, but it was clean and the staff were really friendly - one of the staff really went out of his way to speak to us in english and provided us with some great tips on what to see in the area. We really enjoyed staying on the roll out futons on tatami mats. Facility has a private onsen; it was nice to 'onsen' with my husband.

Review 3:The location is quite far from the center of the city (including train station). However the staff can pick you up from the station after 14, and drive you to the station in the morning if you ask them.

Review 4:Traditional Japanese ryokan equiped with everything you need. The internet is in the room, there is coin washing machine, specious bath, dining room etc. The dinner you have to book in advance, it is really good. It is close to Hida Folk Village and Teddy Bear's Village. The location is quiet and nice.

Review 5:We were try to reserve breakfast at 11 pm for the next day . The owner said can't do it. Very dissapointed, we would like to try japanese style breakfast.

Review 6:Location a bit far from train station. It's about 15 to 20 min walk.

Review 7:This ryokan is clean and neat. We love their onsen. Water temperature is not too hot.Onsen is very clean. The host, Mr Muruyama is friendly and can speak English. He was waiting for us when we called from Takayama tourist office. We ordered our dinner and truly enjoyed it. A good reasonable price for ryokan stay.

Review 8:our room(n.125) had a very loud engine-type noise that went on through the 4 nights we were there. The room could not be changed as the ryokan was full

Review 9:the staff was friendly, good facilities, nice looking rooms.

Review 10:There were no reservation system for the private onsen, hence we had to wait in line. Nevertheless, it wasn't too long a wait.

Review 11:The friendly and helpful operators. The ambience was also nice as we experienced traditional ryokan stay.

Review 12:A little gem found on the outskirts of Takayama centre. Located next to the Teddy Bear museum, it suited us perfectly as it was in a quiet part of the mountain and yet within walking distance to the town centre. The facilities were excellent n the owner most helpful. When my son's sneakers were soaked through because of the rain, the ryokan had a special dry room that totally dried his sneakers by the next morning. Even though we were booked into a room that had no toilet n bath facilities, using the common toilet was not a problem as i didn't even bump into another person the whole time we were there even though it was fully booked. The common bath for the ladies was country club standard with disinfected combs, moisturizers, cream, dryer etc available. The onsen was clean n lovely. Again I didn't bump into another person the whole time I was there, using the onsen. Perhaps my timings were just lucky? Overall it was a great 3 nights stay n I would definitely stay here again.

Review 13:it is a bit far so if you do not catch the shuttle you will need to take a taxi. But worth it.

Review 14:The quite setting. Near a nice and easy trail to the old houses nearby.

Review 15:The free shuttle to Takayama station only runs in the morning.

Review 16:Good value traditional Japanese ryokan stay, come with public and private onsen. Qiete n peaceful environment, walking distance to hida folk village, less than one minute walk to local bus stop, 10 mins local bus ride to Takayama JR station. Friendly staff, comfortable room.

Review 17:Public transport in the evening ended too early and was quite inconvenient if one missed the last bus.

Review 18:The room was perfectly good size, comfortable and feel homely. Meals were delicious and abundant.

Review 19:Nearby there are no shops and restaurants. Free shuttle bus from the hotel only a few times dziennie.Taxi from the train station costs about 1000 yen . Breakfast not very good , not worth the price

Review 20:Very good place to relax, very nice and helpful owner , a small but pleasant onsen

Review 21:the futons a bit hard, but stuff gave us extra futon mats for extra thickness!

Review 22:great location, just on the hill above Takayama, clean air good facilities, nice reception, nice rooms, graet food and service. And a nice onsen bath

Review 23:Away from center of Takayama city, shuttle service to authentic family-run Ryokan. Authentic family run ryokan experience. Great hospitality, excellent value!!

Review 24:Excellent value for money. Lovely location, close to Hida Folk Village, Takayama is reachable in 10 minutes by bus. New and clean bathroom, our room was quite big considering the Japanese standards. We could have private bath every day!!

Review 25:Nil

Review 26:Everything was nice. Especially the staff and food! :) There is a hot bath. The Hida Folk Village and Teddy Bear Eco Village Museum is nearby. shuttle service to station

Review 27:This guest house seems too pricey for the condition, which provides, considering that my stay in Takayama took place beyond the tourist high season. Very rich and varied breakfast and dinner, but in my opinion not very tasty. Distance from the center (a short taxi ride or bus, albeit a fairly long distance walking)

Review 28:Nice guest house staff, helpful in moving around the city. One of the undoubted advantages for people who like active holidays is the location of the hotel in the immediate vicinity of hiking trails and Hida Folk Village (highly recommended for everyone).

Review 29:The lovely, peaceful, semi-rural location does mean that it's a bit of a walk out of town, although they do have a shuttle bus during the daytime, and there aren't any restaurants nearby that are open in the evening. Also, I had a really difficult time figuring out how to use the combo washer-dryer! I got my clothes clean, but had to hang them up to dry because I couldn't manage to operate the dryer. More signs in English would be great.

Review 30:Beautiful Japanese-style room, with extremely comfortable futons (although you might want to double up for added padding!). Lovely staff, very peaceful location, coin laundry, decent location close to folk village. Good food, too

Review 31:The room was fine but not in the best state. The decoration on the paper wall was going away. The walls are thin so you can hear people in the corridor. Was not very loud however.

Review 32:Very welcoming staff. The Ryokan offers a shuttle service to the Takayama train station. There are three hot springs bath, which are okay. The hotel is next to the Hida folk village, which is one of the top attraction in Takayama if you dont have time to make an excursion to the real villages of the region.

Review 33:The futon is relatively thin compare to other places we stayed. The location is about 20min walk from the city train station, and can be quite dark at night. Cleanliness in the room can be improved. The room is a bit old.

Review 34:The kind owner, Mr Murayama who can speak good english picked us up from the train station when we arrived early and called the ryokan. We were allowed to check in early. There are free shuttle bus back to the train station in the morning. The walk to the train station in the morning has nice view. The room is private and quiet. There's internet in the room. There's a sweet treat provided as a welcome gift.

Review 35:Far away from everything. If you plan to visit the Hida folk village, you are better off staying in a more central location and take the local bus (210 yens, runs every 30 minutes).

Review 36:Helpful staff.

Review 37:The local and traditional style of ryokan. We liked the location a lot because it gives the feeling of the country side with the mountain view. It is very clean and comfortable.

Review 38:Host Murayama was very helpful and attentive. A warm and friendly welcome - he helped us with our luggage and showed us around the accommodation and local maps. Great room with beautiful wooden features. Would definitely return next time we are in Takayama! Easy 5 minute walk to the amazing Hida Folk Village.

Review 39:There were no negatives.

Review 40:This ryokan was really clean, the rooms were lovely and spacious in such a beautiful and tranquil setting. The bedding and Western breakfast were both great. We highly recommend this place to others.

Review 41:Onsen bath is a little small and can only accommodate few people at a time.

Review 42:The staff are very polite, friendly and helpful. The location is very quiet and not too far from the city. Breakfast is also good.

Review 43:Nothing

Review 44:Fantastic experience. Great location, away from the town in the forest, a 10-minute walk to the Folk Village. In the mornings, the ryokan shuttle is available to take guests into town. We ate dinner there both nights - the food was excellent, beautifully prepared and very fairly priced. The owner/host must never sleep - he is constantly there to ensure the comfort of his guests. We called when we got to the station as advertised, and within 10 minutes he was there to pick us up. We decided in the last minute (the night before check out) to take a 7 am bus to Kyoto so as not to lose a day traveling, but found ourselves unable to reserve online. when we asked for help, he sent his son into town at 9 pm that night and purchased the tickets for us! Then he drove us to the station at 6:30 am the next morning. Everything with a smile.

Review 45:Extremely friendly and helpful owner, very clean + great to have a private onsen. Location is not so bad too - near hida folk village, walkable to the station + free shuttle buses provided

Review 46:Nice english speaking staff. The Ryokan has a time scheduled shuttle bus to Takayama Station. It is also near to the Hida Folk Village. Too bad I was there too eraly it wasn't open yet but nice surroundings..

Review 47:had some noisy neighbours upstairs for one night

Review 48:Fantastic meals!!!!!!! Dinner and breakfast were excellent! Helpful staff Not central but pick up n drop off was great n is in nice area close to folk village Powerful washer n dryer Drying room for wet shoes

Review 49:Just a bit too far from the town for walking.

Review 50:Nice and quiet place to stay. The room is very comfortable and clean. Loved the breakfast and dinner at the ryokan.

Review 51:Mr.Murayama speaks great English and is always striving to make our stay as pleasant as possible. I'd also recommend the japanese breakfast and the dinner. They are both delicious and, unexpectedly, reasonably priced. Oh! The free onsen should not be missed :)

Review 52:An excellent ryokan in Takayama !!!!!!!!!! Good location in the very quiet area, very clean, nice onsen. And above all - VERY HELPFULL STAFF !!! Thank you !

Review 53:Excellent tradiditionell guest house. The family working there is great! Very friendly and helpful. We can recommend this place without reservations and would stay there again. Ps: Try the japanese breakfastbreakfast

Review 54:Cafés and restaurants at the end of the street close too early. A fair distance to the nearest convenience store.

Review 55:Semi-rural setting near a great town. We walked, others took the bus. Great room size for Japan. Lovely staff.

Review 56:Little far out of town but the shuttle bus made up for it, no other restaurants in the area so if you are going into town make sure to book as the good ones were full and we wandered around for ages

Review 57:The owner was a dead set legend and a one man band, he is driver, bell boy, chef, room service, front desk and then some And so happy in his job! The room we stayed in was lovely, very large and comfortable, the hotel has it's own onsen downstairs and is walking distance to hida folk village, the teddy bear museum

Review 58:It was definitely a good 20 minute walk out of the city, but there were a couple of bus options you could take every hour.

Review 59:Very comfortable, spacious rooms. The public bath is also quite nice to have. Overall, pretty good value.

Review 60:Location is a bit far from the station, but shuttle bus provided by hotel is a perfect solution

Review 61:Very clean, nice onsen, opportunity to have traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast, pick up service

Review 62:far from the downtown, wifi was really bad on overall level in japan and room wasn't really clean. Showers are available only on morning and evening and the public spa was really plain, just showers and one tiny pool.

Review 63:There is family spa room. Staff was super nice! There is also shuttle service to the town.

Review 64:My wife & I stayed for 2 nights with our two adult kids and had a wonderful experience there. The owners are extremely kind and helpful and speak enough English to help find where to go and what to do in Takayama. Although the location is a little far from town it's easy enough to get around. We highly recommend this Ryokan.

Review 65:The water pressure of shower is poor that I can't even clean my hair with the private toilet.

Review 66:The room is spacious and clean. Good hair dryer and bedding.

Review 67:Very hospitable owner, beautiful rural location near a walking path and farms. Beautiful older building. Delicious dinner- and appreciated that we could book it in a short window of time. Would stay here again!!

Review 68:The situation is very good, near Hida flok village, and if you call thevryoksn, the staff will come to take you from Takayama station to the hostel. The bathes are simple but nice and clean. The dinner is very good.

Review 69:I really liked the just out-of-town location. It was no bother to walk in for dinner, and I really liked being in the quieter areas near the forest and rice fields. It's also a short walk to the open-air museum, which was the main reason for our visit to Takayama. Our family-sized room was huge, spotlessly clean, and well maintained.

Review 70:I wasn't told I had to book breakfast before 9PM the day before.

Review 71:The owner was waiting with his little bus at the train station. He was very nice and welcoming. The ryokan is not in the center of the city (20-minute walk) but it is close to some attractions. If you have a room with a shared bathroom, be aware that it is a public bath kind of bathroom (naked in front of the other people cleaning themselves at the same time as you): really nice experience and actually not that scary. Everything was clean, the bedroom was authentic (futon, tatami floor...). The neighborhood was safe.

Review 72:Atmosphere was great! Very traditional Japanese accommodation with tatami mats, futons, yukatas/kimono along with a public bathhouse. The inn had a bus that picked us up from the JR station which was very convenient since we had a ton of luggage. They also offer a bus ride to the JR station along with many discount tickets for local attractions.

Review 73:The futons are VERY thin. I am used to sleeping in Ryokans, but this was the thinnest futon ever. My body still hurts from that experience.

Review 74:The room is very big. Perfect for large familes. Japanese style toilet in the room. Western style toilet are also available, in the common area. Private onsen for the whole family. The staff was very helpful, free parking is available.

Review 75:Pick-up service to/from the station. The owner was superb! He really helped us in a case of illness and also send my forgotten item to my latter hotel. Close to the Hida folk village.

Review 76:- in other ryokans we were given two futons to sleep on and it was more comfortable, here there was only one...

Review 77:- location, near the traditional village, far however from the train station and from the city center, thus if you arrive too late for the shuttle bus offered by the ryokan, you'd have to walk for 20-25 min. - mixed onsen was nice - room was clean and spacious

Review 78:I think it is not a little bit convenient to go to JR station, if you want to go earlier than the time schedule of shutter bus.

Review 79:There is onsen in this hotel and i like onsen very much.

Review 80:If you know what you pay, you will definitely accept it has no private bath and washroom in your room. However, all the public facilities are crazily clean and tidy. It's not only because the owner just renovated the ryoran, but also they really care their service and reputation. Recommended!

Review 81:The owner was more than kind, and the place was very quiet and peaceful ! The private Ofuro was also a good point. Even if it was slightly far from the station (about 20min walk), the free shuttle service was very convenient.

Review 82:We couldn't stay longer.

Review 83:We loved the location, especially since our primary destination wasthe Folk Village. The fact the staff spoke English made our visit socomfortable. We walked 10 miles the first day and needed thewonderful onsen.

Review 84:Location was a little out of the way - 30 min walk into town, however near the Folk Village which was good

Review 85:Staff were super friendly. Pick up and drop off from the station was great. Rooms very spacious. Every little comfort thought of (bath robes, welcome cookies, tea). Traditional japanese shared bath was a great experience - very relaxing and again amazing to have shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers etc all provided. Wifi excellent.

Review 86:The location though the ryokan provides free shuttle to and fro from the town.

Review 87:Very helpful owner Murayama. He speaks gd English and provides free shuttle at certain timings to and fro the downtown tourist centre. The jap meals are delicious. Had dinner and breakfast.

Review 88:There's a problem with their septic tank or plumbing. Bathrooms smell terrible.

Review 89:Good ryokan experience for people passing through Takayama. Well priced. Basic but suitable onsen facilities.

Review 90:The location is far from the center so if you like to go for a dinner and such it can be a problem especially that everything is closed early in the neighborhood

Review 91:The staff was helpful. It was fine as an experienced staying in a Japanese traditional roykan

Review 92:Place is out from the centre of Takayama, which means a long walk or use of the free shuttle

Review 93:Very helpful staff and loved the free shuttle to and from the station. They ran extra services when we were there due to the festival.

Review 94:The tatami mats seem to be a bit on the thin side, but that didn't stop us from having two good nights of sleep.

Review 95:This place isn't brand spanking new, but it's kept in wonderful, clean condition by a sweet and enthusiastic staff that makes you feel amazingly welcome. Bathrooms and tatami rooms are kept spotless. The location is outside the center of town near the train station, but this is not a problem at all since Mr. Murayama provides a scheduled shuttle service that makes runs to and from the station several times each morning. We actually ended up preferring this slightly remote location because it offered beautiful mountain views of the Alps in the distance, and was near the forest and a few short nature trails that made for great pre- and post-dinner strolling. They also offer free station pickup service if you tell them ahead of time when you are arriving. We also had a good Japanese style breakfast while we were there.

Review 96:Shabu Shabu diner was good but we felt that it was slightly overrated. Private onsen was constantly busy (but of course it was not the host fault). Room was pretty basic but pretty much it was expected in Ryokan.

Review 97:The host was very friendly. Although we arrived 2 hours earlier, the room was already prepared. Good location just a few minutes walk from Hida Folk Village. Thanks to shuttle offered free of charge we got to Takayama centre without any hassle. Wifi was ok

Review 98:The bus collection from the train station with a warm smile.also the offer for us to go look at the town as we had only had one day and the kind offer to drop our bags at the station so we did not have to go back and collect

Review 99:A bit out of town, you need a car, bike or taxi to move around. There is a bus stop nearby and the owner drives you from and back the train station when arriving and leaving (a blessing, but remember to ask for it).

Review 100:Beautiful ryokan, managed by extremely friendly and helpful staff, a real value added.

Review 101:Everything was nice :)

Review 102:The owner came to pick us up from the Station just by calling him. The room was nice and the bath was hot!! Hida no sato is just 5 min walking from there.

Review 103:More expensive than other hotels in the area but paid extra to have private bathroom. Bit of a walk from town but not a problem unless of low fitness. The hotel runs a shuttle bus at set times each day but we only used it to get to the train station after checking out.

Review 104:Nice traditional Japanese room. Owner very friendly and helpful.

Review 105:The food service was a bit expensive (you can always go into town or down the street).

Review 106:Private Onsen can be used with friends or family. The location is quiet, away from the city center and there are a number of activities in the immediate area and a bus service. Service from the staff was excellent in Japanese or English. It is good value for money for a Ryokan.

Review 107:Larger bin in the room would be handy, particularly given that Japan seems to have no public bins.

Review 108:Big, comfortable living space and futons. Very clean. Bit chilly in the mornings but expected at higher altitude. Great location at the foot of the mountains with walks close by. Bit outside of takayama but we were lucky enough to have a car. Good base if you want to explore the Japanese alps. 25min walk to town. The Ryokan is just left of the Teddy a Bear Eco Village (!!)

Review 109:As there was a commuter bus from the ryokan we hoped that we would be taken to the rail but we needed to walk to the bus stop

Review 110:Laundry facility very good Very pleasant proprietor Breakfast needs to be included in tariff

Review 111:Hospitality was awesome, extremely well kept and clean, location is great (within walking distance) if you are looking to spend a day at Hida Folk Village. Also the free shuttle to Takayama Bus Station is a big bonus.

Review 112:nothing, it was our best experience out of the 12 hotels/Ryokan we made The Ryokan is far from town but very close from the small typical village Hida (which can be visited): just 5mn walk Breafast was nothing special, but that general in Japan

Review 113:Dinner was amazing (and not overly expensive) Onsen (hot bath) was excellent (and possible in couple!) Room is very big and extremmely pleasant The Ryokan is far from town but the owner was incredibly responsive to pick us up with his big bus: litteraly in 7mn he was there. He also dorpped us. Amazing owner: extremmely nice, reactive, helpfull and swithed on!

Review 114:nothing sort of bad here. we didn't experience any kind of trouble

Review 115:our room, we woke up to snow falling on our windows and our room was cozy, spacious and warm. the public bath was okay.

Review 116:This was the ryokan experience we wanted to have on our Japanese holiday. As onsen novices it was lovely to be able to use the private onsen first before launching into the single sex baths. The room was large, comfortable and well equipped and we really enjoyed eating breakfast and dinner in the large tatami dining room

Review 117:It was a long way to walk into town. There could have been more times scheduled for the free shuttle bus than only three in the morning.

Review 118:Our room was spacious for a family of four with a nice seating area. It was nice to have a private bath in the house.

Review 119:Poor location. Our late night arrival in rainy weather required a taxi to the ryokan. Finding this place at night, walking with your luggage would not be easy. It is a long 35 minute walk from the train station...if you knew the way, along some busy streets and uphill roads at the end. The cost was also too high for what you got. At the very least, they should have included breakfast at no additional charge.

Review 120:Helpful and friendly staff. You can purchase a good breakfast. There is a morning shuttle bus to the station. Our room on the 3rd level was very spacious and quiet.

Review 121:At 4700 yen a night, without breakfast, shared toilet, and the location way out of town, it wasn't the best value. I didn't eat there. The dinners looked good. Breakfast was 1080, and while a bit much for breakfast, I would have tried it if they would have served it after 8am! I don't know why an inn for tourists would be so strict and early about breakfast hours, especially given the distance out of town. Ideally they would offer a self-service simple toast and coffee for around 300/400 yen. (Even cheap hostels have free coffee!) Also, the second floor men's toilets were smelly.

Review 122:Very clean, nice enough, I had a huge room, bigger than I needed. Spa was nice, and the downstairs toilets were very nice.

Review 123:- busy for a ryokan - hard to find a place to eat around - far away from the station by foot (1/2 hour)

Review 124:- Close to the hida village - public bath - warm and comfy room

Review 125:Hard to came up with one except Japonese breakfast but that will depend of your taste.

Review 126:Perfect to try a Japonese Traditional Ryokan. The room came with futon bed and yukata. There were a private onsen free of charge and the dinner was amazing. Free shuttle to train station and city centre in the morning. Good location.

Review 127:Because the staff is totally unprepared, we were not informed that we should book the breakfast until 9 p.m. of the day before. Since we arrived at night, we also did not have dinner. In the end, we paid a lot of money only to sleep in a "japanese style bed", which had happened in a hostel two days ago for a much better price. No incredible experiences, no nothing. Just terrible.

Review 128:Basically, nothing. It was the worse experience of the whole trip.
