Reviews for Minshuku Kuwataniya
Review 1:The rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The stairway is steep with higher than normal risers. Carrying luggage up can be difficult. Not for person(s) with leg problems.
Review 2:Location, location, location.
Review 3:hotel is near the walk street with roof( many restaurant and convenince store ) .Car park of hotel is on the ground beside the hotel (not to go to lift) .Shared bath room is clean and you can go to bath when there are no guest and onsen like a private bathroom because this is a small hotel about 10rooms or less. In the morning , it hard to find breakfast , only 7-11 or family mart . or you need to have breakfast at hotel
Review 4:Shower would turn off during use.
Review 5:Nice old style Japanese feel to the place. Opted for the western style room. Building is old and had some quirks, like the shower would turn off sometimes while using it since it's probably run on a pump. Rooms are dated but overall we enjoyed our stay (2 people).
Review 6:Even though a hot flask and tea was provided and was satisfactory it would have been nice to have an electric kettle for a hot tea in the morning.
Review 7:The Onsen and Japanese tatami bedroom was a great way to relax at the end of the day. Great location - a 10 minute walk to station and close to restaurants and main attractions.
Review 8:Smell of kerosene. There were no curtains so it was very bright in the morning. We would have liked a kettle although they did provide water in a thermos and t-bags.
Review 9:Clean, comfortable beds.
Review 10:Wasn't anything negative about this place.
Review 11:This is typical Japanese guest house. The owner will prepare breakfast and/or dinner if you let her know day before. We did this and so glad we did. Traditional cuisine and was well worth the $. Must remove shoes when entering the bldg as well which was cool. No noise from traffic so great sleep! Woukd stay here again. Also was able to use bicycles which was great experience.
Review 12:Be aware there are steep flights of steps (no lifts). Power points are 2- pin (flat) type so may need adapter (available at Nagao pharmacy). Slight smell of diesel from outside the window when the hot water is turned on.
Review 13:Great location, clean. Homestay feel but not intrusive - lovely and simple.
Review 14:Our experience was great. No problems whatsoever
Review 15:The location couldn't be better. 10 minute walk (older folks with luggage) walk from station, near a lovely temple and right next to the old towm, shops, temples, restaurants, and all the sights. Quiet and comfortable.
Review 16:None
Review 17:Comfortable clean room plenty big enough for 4 adults. Location good - not too far from station although directions to get there could be simplified - up the street in front of the station and turn left. Near town centre and plenty of restaurants
Review 18:Towels were inadequate, the shower curtain needed cleaning, and the shower pressure was intermittent.
Review 19:After staying in cramped business hotel rooms, the space in our western-style twin room was very welcome. Good internet, warm, comfortable, pleasant staff (with little English), clean, excellent breakfasts. Convenient to station and bus terminal, easy access to areas of interest.
Review 20:Nothing
Review 21:It is a great experience to stay at a Minshuku and dream in a futon and take a nigth bath at the hotsprings. I recomend people to have breakfast and dinner at least one day at the minshuku. It is lovely.
Review 22:The soap and shampoo really smelt bad. Really. The curtain in the bathroom had stains (fungus?) all over it. There were no curtains in the room therefore evrerytime a light turned on on the next building we would wake up, since the buildings are close to each other. That meant a bad night of sleep. It was one of the last hotels available probably for that reason.
Review 23:The location, halfway between the station and the streets.
Review 24:Nothing.
Review 25:The minshuku is very close from the train station, you can also ask at the tourist Information point(outside the Station) and they will inform you how to reach it. The lady does not speak so much English but this is not a problem in my opinion. Me and my husband had a 4-person Japanese style room (the minshuku was fully booked). The futon was really comfortable, much better than hotel-beds. It was warm in the room thanks to the air conditioning and we had complimentary tea. The onsen is small but perfect to relax for a while. The location is also very good, just a couple of min walk to the old houses-street and the restaurants. I will stay again here if I come back to Takamaya.
Review 26:Different level for bathrooms n too few power points.
Review 27:Rooms were thoughtfully warmed up when we arrived in cold winter! Convenient location and good value for money. Comfortable tatami beds. Friendly and helpful owner, even though limited English.
Review 28:It is a little worn and that's why it feels homely.
Review 29:This must be a family-run place. There is a basic cosiness to the small room which had all we needed for a comfortable stay. Things work and the breakfast was very decent. The host was a lovely person.
Review 30:We thought it was a bit on the pricy side looking at the place which isquite basic (but that could just be our previous experiences). If you're looking for the real ryokan experience of being pampered, I would honestly just spend the extra bucks. We don't have any experience in that area. The rooms are indeed a bit dated and noisy - you can hear the tv in the other room. If you noisy neighbours that might be a problem - this wasn't the case with us. The real downer was the onsen however - it's just a big hot bath surrounded communal sitting showers in a damp and not well ventilated room (no separate washspaces so don't be shy :-) or go to the sauna a few times before coming to Japan). We've been to natural (communal) onsens before so that might have clouded our judgement as well (they're so gorgeous!). And then there's the smell & hygiene in the toilets: since they switch the male/female toilets & onsens from time to time, both toilrts have urinals with disgustingly smelling tablets (against urine-smell). You even smell it in the hallway. The women's squatting-toilet (the other one is a European toilet) had remnants of a nr. 2 which were still visible by the end of the next day which I think they could have cleaned up.
Review 31:Coming from the North of Japan, we maybe have to get accustomed tothe higher priced southern part but this Minshuku is just anefficient and quite comfortable way of spending your nights atTakayama. Not much more. Our arrival went quite smoothly, the woman who runs the place is quite proficient in English and friendly. We had breakfast and dinner one time - just for the experience (not included in our room price) which was nicely put together. But you can also get this at any of the many restaurants in town. I think everyone does this since there was no one else in the breakfast-/dinner area :-). A bit of an odd experience. The room we got assigned was spacious and on the streetside. It had wifi access, being on the 1st floor above the reception. Despite earlier comments, we thought it was fine to have no curtains. The windows are stained so no one actually sees you. The futons were fine. When you're a light sleeper, I'd suggest a sleepingmask and maybe some earplugs for the occasional car in the evening. All in all, just fine to spend the night but don't expect too much. It's a guesthouse, not a ryokan.
Review 32:weird smell in the room bathroom was 2 floors down onsen was dirty...
Review 33:Located well, price is fine and they are helpful- free bicycle, luggage storage for free etc...

Review 48:The charm associated with a room where you slept or drank your green tea while sitting on on the rush matting on the floor.
Review 49:Public bathroom (for me I think it's not private)

Review 73:The men bathroom was downstairs and this will cos inconvenience to youwhen you want to use the toilet. The mini fridge in my room not coldenough for my Asahi Beer! They will only change your bedsheet only ifyou requested.
Review 74:Mr.Hiroko Takagaki san was very helpful setting my rental car gps eventhough he was limited in his English.GPS Was in Jap Kanji! Very cleanindeed.I Was embarrased by my actions spilling Asahi Dry onto the Tatamimat, but upon return at nite, they clean it up like new and no complainsfrom the inn keeper! Of course please refrain from dirtying the.room.Good locations and Fair value for money.
Review 75:Slightly expensive as it was fairly basic. Few rooms have own bathroom - so a bit Backpacker. A sheet of rules to follow. No shoes upstairs. Rubbish brought downstairs. If you were neat & tidy all was good.
Review 76:Very good location for walking to old district. Beautiful alpine town. Very comfortable beds.
Review 77:Located right in the city centre, five minutes from the station. Friendly staff. They offer traditional japanese accommodation. It is a really nice experience.
Review 78:Wi-fi signal not too good. Stay in the room which have to bath atjapanese style share bathroom (separate man/woman) need to be nude.Toilet have one modern style and another one is japanese old style whichso difficult to sit on knee.
Review 79:Hotel like stay in the house. Owner very friendly and very kind eventhough they cannot speak English so much. When we ask for recommendrestaurent, they are not just show us but bring we there. Stay onJapanese futon is very comfort.
Review 80:This is a well run cozy traditional Japanese-style hotel. Clean and surprisingly quiet tatami-floor rooms and two well-kept onsen (traditional hot baths) are excellent for relaxation. This is not a luxurious hotel but it is a great value for money for those wanting traditional experience.
Review 81:Windows had no curtains or shutters, very light in room early in the morning. Two onsen, one for men, one for women, the one for men was tiny, barely fit two people. No table or chairs in room, no other sitting corner in house.
Review 82:Good location, decent beds, the onsen, good and fast wireless, good size ensuite bathroom.
Review 83:the atmosphere was not really like in a typical minshuku, but rather like in an anonymous hostel. No friendly words from the staff upon our arrival and departure. We did not feel welcome there.
Review 84:the rooms, the facilities were very clean and they have a nice onsen.
Review 85:We enjoyed excellent facilities as we opted for the off-street room with a bath. We did so based on user feedback that the front of the hotel was noisy with traffic. We were not bothered by noise.
Review 86:The location was excellent for tourists using rail transport. It was a very easy walk to town center, bus and other tourists interests. Excellent nearby restaurants. Very nice, traditional Japanese hotel.
Review 87:no options to sit comfortably outside the room. bathroom was charged in addition and mandatory
Review 88:We staid for 1 night in a spacious family room and slept on tatami beds. We did not make use of the dining option. The landlady brought special small size yukatan for the kids. They loved it.
Review 89:Leaving.
Review 90:This ryokan is well run and very comfortable. The experience of staying in Japanese style accommodation rather than western-style hotels was invaluable and highly enjoyable. The (public) bath and shower was amazing after a hot day sightseeing, more so that I had it to myself.
Review 91:Nothing in particular. Please note it is Japanese style!
Review 92:Simple and very decent hotel. Friendly staff. Free bicycle use. Located in the centre of Takayama.
