Reviews for Stenden Hotel
Review 1:We knew this was run by university students, however we were not aware that it was actually part of the university. So after checking in, we were walked to our room, past all the students studying, past classrooms and into what appeared to be dormitories. We felt as if we were staying in a uni, which is what it is. The room itself was nice but very small, and the 'mini bar' was a fridge that could only be activated by staff, which we weren't told so we just assumed it didn't work. As the students were all eager to please, service was good but a bit in your face and over the top. For example, you would walk past the customer service desk in the hallway where there would be 8 to 10 students there, and each one of them would greet us, was a little annoying. We also got a knock on the door at about 10pm to ask if we needed anything. This hotel is no smoking which is fine, but during the day, we had to walk past about 10 or so students standing around in the doorway all smoking, and noticed so many butts on the ground it was ridiculous! Upon checkout, two students escorted us & our luggage to our car, but upon seeing a thick layer of ice on our windows, offered no assistance to get it off for us, and left. It's about a 30 minute walk to the main town area. The building itself is just ugly and you don't get that nice 'wow' factor when you arrive. It actually didn't feel like we were on holidays! Breakfast was ok, nothing special. Wi fi was ok but sometimes didn't work.
Review 2:Heated flooring in the bathroom
Review 3:A great hotel staff very, very helpful, great location, great service, advise with the utmost confidence to try this hotel. It is a good opportunity to see what services at the highest level. I will return anytime with great pleasure at this hotel.
Review 4:The design of the shower stall above the bath in the bathroom meant that the bathroom flooded very easily.
Review 5:Friendly staff, very clean and comfortable room. Excellent breakfast and free parking within easy walking distance of city centre - overall very good value for money.
Review 6:Distance from the reception to the hotel room. My spouse is recovering from cancer and is not able to walk long distances. Also we were on the 2nd floor for the first day and there is no elevator. The staff were very good to carry our suitcases up the stairs but it was difficult for my spouse to climb the stairs. There was no information on the website to tell us there wasa no elevator.
Review 7:Excellent service. Lots of staff.
Review 8:what i didn't like is the internet connection was low and every time has to log in to connect it. hope from you to check it and make it better.
Review 9:i like the comfort of the hotel and the nice treatment of the hotel staff , they were very helpful and kind. asking the customers about their conveniency was also very good.
Review 10:Nothing to dislike other than 15 min pleasant walk to town.
Review 11:Student run very friendly and chocolate on arrival. Comfortable and clean rooms with good beds. I would definatly come again.
Review 12:Breakfast is very sad - need to improve. No bread selection at all - there was just a loaf of bread.
Review 13:The location was perfect as we were there to drop off our son to Stenden University.
Review 14:When I was there the bar and restaurant had not yet reopened after the summer break so there was no area to sit and chill out in which would have been nice.
Review 15:This hotel is run by the students of the Hotel Management course offered by Stenden University. All the students I met there, without exception, were extremely helpful and friendly. The hotel is about a 10-15 minute stroll into the very pretty town of Leeuwarden but there is a buss that stops right outside the hotel if you prefer. Special mention should be made the bed linen which is so soft and lovely to sleep on that I even googled the name of the supplier to see if it was available to buy!
Review 16:the rooms were cramped somewhat.
Review 17:The welcome drinks. The food which included the dinner and breakfast. The three course dinner was paired with three excellent beers, Normally the food is paired with wine but I'm a beer guy and the server clearly relished the challege. Great food and service!
Review 18:The restaurant was closed due to student holidays , we failed to realise this and whilst the stay was to embrace the new Dutch food culture we missed out but loved the overall experience
Review 19:Over attentive attitude of the staff/students , complex/art, Access /parking ,walk to town centre ,park opposite
Review 20:Reading lights at the bed were so dim that it was easier to read sitting on the toilet in the bathroom. Rooms are a long distance from the office.
Review 21:Student staff were very helpful and friendly. Constantly re-supplied chocolate bars was a big surprise. They really helped when we asked to extend our stay but they were already booked; as soon as they got a cancellation, they rearranged so we could stay in our room.
Review 22:Being a bit out of the city centre will make it hard to get to train station out of the bus working hour.
Review 23:Everything was great. On the last day I was unaware that the breakfast starts at 8 am on Sunday. When I arrived earlier and they noticed that I am in rush, they quickly sorted everything out. The hotel is managed professionally and they hire educated young staff who are really friendly and polite.
Review 24:The service was excellent and provided by hospitality students. The extra treats of house made chocolate and dishes of dried fruit and nuts along with bottled water to great U.S. was a nice touch.
Review 25:I suppose some people would say that there is a long walk from reception/restaurant/bar/lounge area to the bedrooms but it's through the university area and indoors and didn't make any difference to us.
Review 26:The staff at this hotel are so welcoming and helpful, they are students at this training hotel but it doesn't show and their spoken English is perfect. The rooms are well equipped with a Samsung flat screen tv, fridge, tea and coffee facilities, snacks and chocolate bars, adjustable beds and fluffy pillows. We hesitated before booking because it was shown as an out of town location, it isn't, it's a nice five minute stroll to the canal side walk to the main centre. There is a beautiful park opposite too. We would happily return here next time we are in Leeuwarden.
Review 27:Surprisingly, there was no a normal lamp in the room giving enough light, only small lights on sides, i.e. the room was very dark. The hotel staff consists mainly of students from the hotel school, which is ignorant and insistent. I do not understand why I have to pay for someone's education. Rooms are far away from the entrance.
Review 28:Localization is good and breakfasts were nice.
Review 29:The distantie beween check-in and the bedroom, this is a long slalom walk.
Review 30:The excellent well furnished and laid out room. Nice welcoming water and bites upon arrival in the room.
Review 31:I wanted to break Euro 200 note into 100s or 50s notes at reception Answer was "Sorry we don't do it". A convenient answer
Review 32:It was good to see Stenden university students at Job and learning in real time.
Review 33:The hotel offers 3 chocolates but we just opened the first: it was worms chocolate (yes, with lots of worms!). We found it disgusting! Hotel is not that close to the center, prepare for at least 15 min walk. This is a school hotel. Staff are students, all very nice young people but not yet professionals so go with a bit of patience. From check in desk to room you must cross the school, quite a walk among students.
Review 34:Great value for money. Very clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 35:Not being able to enter/exit the hotel through the door directly next to the rooms but having to go all the way round the main entrance (and this was despite there often being staff at the side door)
Review 36:Food was excellent - both in quality and especially value. Staff were very friendly and helpful Commitment to environment eg not changing sheets every day, timer in shower etc
Review 37:Not being able to spend more than one night due to our travel plans!!
Review 38:The staff were all very friendly and the food in the restaurant was exquisite. Even though we were part of a learning and training school, we never felt as if we were in anything but a first class hotel.
Review 39:The minibar was empty when i arrived. The way to the room was a mess (the hotel is in a school and they were re-building the place). The student that "run" the place try to hard.
Review 40:The room is nice, the restaurant is good, the breakfast is very nice.
Review 41:The front staffs are excellent and very helpful although they are all Students, but they show high commitment to provide the utmost services towards all the Guests. Convenient transportation as well with many frequent Bus coming & going out to City. Overall, our stay @ Stenden has been very memorable & will definitely come back again in future.
Review 42:-housekeeping not to standard-- stains on wall paper -bathroom basin blocked, unsuccessfully cleared -Noisy due to student concert outside window -No mini bar facility -long walk to rooms -construction near lobby
Review 43:-students were pleasant and tried hard but some lacked common sense example when no sugar was left with the coffee a call to reception resulted in one sachet being delivered?? -quick check out
Review 44:It wasn't clear when booking that the hotel is a student training facility. Not a problem as such just would have preferred to know what to expect!
Review 45:Rooms were nice, clean and comfortable
Review 46:Good location, very friedly staff, large and comfortable rooms, very clean. Coffee and tea in the room. The hotel is situated in Stenden university itself, a very interesting decision, yet a very successful one!
Review 47:Comfortable Hotel, nice rooms, friendly staff.... we'll come back.
Review 48:Nothing to dislike
Review 49:Staff were so helpful throughout our stay and made us feel very welcome
Review 50:Training Hotel , but very off putting to see 7 members of staff at the reception all the time doing nothing .
Review 51:Every Thing was what we requested
Review 52:Building in campus day time very crowded and night very quite.
Review 53:Staff are student getting experience very cooperative and friendly.
Review 54:Too many staff members looking over the customers at the same time. Maybe this happens because it is a school
Review 55:The breakfast is amazing
Review 56:Very friendly and excellent breakfast, the training hotel concept works
Review 57:the staff were really hospitality
Review 58:Non Smoking policy
Review 59:Bed, Wifi, clean room, and nice staff
Review 60:Hotel university
Review 61:None
Review 62:Excellent good and nespresso codfeemachine
Review 63:Excellent breakfast
Review 64:long walk from reception to actual hotel
Review 65:dinner was amazing
Review 66:The chocolates
Review 67:Breakfast
Review 68:Customer Service
Review 69:Lack of consistency when it came to details.
Review 70:Friendly staff who did their very best to provide the best service possible.
Review 71:Many of the the staff (students) were not very competent and not sufficiently well supervised
Review 72:It was where I needed to be
Review 73:Very nice and motivated staff. Everything was in order because the trainees are well supervised as part of the training.
Review 74:The new Dutch Cuisine in the restaurant was excellent. The student staff was charming, this gives it a special experience..
Review 75:The cleaning was not very good.
Review 76:I like the location, friendly staff.
Review 77:Distance of the rooms to the hotel reception
Review 78:Clean comfy rooms pleasant staff
Review 79:Labyrinth walk to your room no baby seat in restaurant forced us to go into city
Review 80:Excellent staff
Review 81:Check in too far from room Car too far from room
Review 82:Bizarre layout with reception separated from the rest of the hotel
Review 83:Hugely enthusiastic staff
Review 84:Constructions , the way in and out passing through the students rooms inside the university
Review 85:Quit Safe location
Review 86:no cash accepted
Review 87:the experimental menu (nouvelle cuisine) of the dinner wasn't that good, one of the plates in particular left all our groups displeased: some boiled vegetables (carrots, peas and celery) with a foam of morelles mushrooms that didn't taste of mushroom at all. The other plates were OK, reasonably priced.
Review 88:the unusual atmosphere of the school-hotel
Review 89:The diner in the hotel is great value for money, 3 courses for EUR 15,-, so I realize that I have no right to be critical on that. However, the kitchen is supervised by a teacher/professional, whe sets up the menu. The philosophy is max. 20% meat or fish and 80% vagetables. The starter was a russion salad (95% potatos) and the main course was a piece of beef, with mashed potatos and fries (in this case 90% potatos). It would have been more honest to mention on the menu that the food is as least 80% potatos, instead of 80% vegetables. I have to mention that the quality of the potatos was good, and the desert was perfect.
Review 90:It is nice that the hotel is run by students. Please take that into account if you stay there, and don't get worried or upset when they bring your coffee at breakfast and you see that they spilled half the cup on the way to your table. It is quite cute that the staff are just students that are still allowed to make each possible mistake. The rooms are well designed, clean and comfortable. We would defenitely come back to this place.
Review 91:The hotel lies a bit isolated. The city centre is quite near though.
Review 92:Absolutely great value for the money. The hotel is run by the students/graduates from the Stenden University and offer a great service for very little money. The restaurant is also very good and cheap.
Review 93:everything was perfect
Review 94:Friendly staff very helpful. The food in the restaurant is excellent. Try the Frisian Tiramisu Staying at this hotel was a nice experience. Staying there is giving the chance to the students to practice their future job. Great idea!!!
Review 95:we had only one set of towels, a second one was promised but never arrived. they maintained we had a soft drink from the refrigerator and it was hard to convince them of the contrary.
Review 96:the serviceability and friendliness of the staff. how they looked.
Review 97:The hotel rooms are FAR away from the reception, and I got lost walking through the university halls trying to find my room. If you are in a hurry, the check-in and check-out could take a while, depending on how experienced the student is who helps you (took mine 15-20 minutes to check in). But the whole process is interesting :)
Review 98:It's a hotel-school, so while the quality of the personnel isn't up to par, they are "in-training", which makes it kind of interesting to be here! Good price for the quality of the room you get, spacious, and the food in the restaurant is excellent, for a really great price!
Review 99:but when check in the gentalman staff are bit dispointed, because he did not know what his doing and always ask his college and also print wrong invoice???
Review 100:when at check out time the lady student are very professional, the whole place are really good, room are nice and clean, very quite
Review 101:[1]Firstly, this hotel SHOULD be advertised as an EDUCATIONAL FACILITY not a straight forward hotel, that way, guests would be aware as to whether they wished to partake in helping students with their learning. ie; being a guinea pig... It came across as students PLAYING at being in work. [2] No record of my booking at main reception on arrival-so unnecessary delay in checking in, which may or may not have been the Stenden's fault. [3] A long way from parking/check in to room -and through university corridors, and then into accommodation area with separate small guest reception, so guests not using a separate entrance direct into the accommodation area. [4] Went out early (a long walk to main reception and then out) to fuel car ready for next destination, difficulty in gaining entrance to hotel on return, via voice com controlled car park barriers, due to language difficulties. Eventually got in, but another long walk to room... [5] On leaving, No porter or trolley to help -as a disabled man this was inconvenient to say the least. (see + comments). Again, no one in hotel accommodation small reception area, early morning, to help with porterage, again very inconvenient. It wasn't until yet another 200 mtr walk through corridors, struggling with baggage this time, that I arrived at the main entrance to find people in an office enjoying a chat, Now utterly exhausted, I decided to leave without bothering with the breakfast -but other comments had said it was poor anyway. No Chance of a refund of that eh Stenden? Thought not... [6] Broken electrical fitting in room. [7] Broken fittings on bath. [8] Not ideally located for central Leeuwarden. [9] If your old or middle aged you'll feel out of place amongst all these kids. [10] the usual tourist trap of a mini bar in room which I didn't use.
Review 102:After check in one student helped carry my luggage, as a disabled man this was much appreciated. Room quiet, facilities clean.
Review 103:The outer appearance of the hotel (but okay, who cares), the location(in a city like Leeuwarden, 2km from city center is quite far; ofcourse, I knew that before and did not need to go back to city center, but if I would return to the city, I might pick a different hotel forthis reason), I also found that some details are not paid attention toby hotel management: no accessible plugin on the nighttable, no rack forthe small towels in the bath room, unhandy jam glasses at breakfast andI also find one-layer toilet paper inappropriate at 4-star level, breakfast was really nice, but given that it offered no fruit, I find itquite on the expensive side
Review 104:The concept of the hotel and the openness and effort of the students, the big bike garage, the bread that was served for breakfast (betterthan Dutch average), the design and furniture of the room, actuallyeven the little walk along the lecture halls to get from the receptionto the rooms
Review 105:bit of a walk from reception to my room, but not a major issue. Not a lot round the hotel to look at for a business visitor.
Review 106:good staff helpful. Excellent food and good value. Good value hotel
Review 107:There wasn't anything I didn't like during my stay. I found the whole student hotel experience very pleasant!!
Review 108:I liked that everyone was very baby friendly. Also the rooms are quite soundproof. Value for money is excellent and I will be recommending the hotel to friends and family.
Review 109:Expensive breakfast, booking.com does a poor job on information about that. The room was quite small, old fashioned. They speak English very well, but refuse to speak Dutch.
Review 110:Friendly staff A nice bath in the cheapest room.
Review 111:The receptionist insisted that I had not paid for my room the previous night at check-in, simply because another receptionist had made a mistake in the computer filing system. I had paid cash, so I had no proof of payment. The receipt they had printed out for me was in Dutch, so I did not realize it was wrong. The result, I was kept waiting and was late for work.
Review 112:Distance from checkin to hotel proper through other student areas
Review 113:All the students were eager to be off assistance and were assisted bycompetent qualified staff. The restaurrant service and food wasexcellent and we really enjoyed our surprise menu which took into ouraour allergies and preferences.
Review 114:Is it possible that the shower water be a little bit powerful?
Review 115:The staffs are friendly. Hotel facilities are new and comfortable. Breakfast is great. Because the hotel is a part of Univ., we also enjoyed walking in the University.
Review 116:The hotel is situated in the campus and run by students who are veryhelpful and professional. The rooms are very well equipped andcomfortable. It is a very good value for the price. The restaurant isunique in its design and very elegant. It serves fantastic food and iscertainly worth recommending even though the prices are a bit too high.
Review 117:The student staff is very friendly and eager to do their job. Hotel room is very nice, clean, quiet. There is also a restaurant and bar in the hotel, with great food. There is bus to the city center just in the front of the hotel.
Review 118:The entrance of the hotel was a bit difficult to find (bad posting). Thelayout is a bit strange. A long walk from the hall to the room (but atleast this make the hotel quiet). When we came they were trraining thenew stuff and made the procedure for check in/out a bit slow. These areminor downside. The overall impression was very good
Review 119:Hotel is new modern quiet and clean. Courtesy of the staff. Free parking
Review 120:Attitude of staff, always willing to help even when things were not going to plan
Review 121:staff, learning environment, is very friendly
Review 122:Grate stay, good food, wery good price :)
Review 123:very friendly and helpful staff modern & appealing location
Review 124:minor things at breakfast
Review 125:very friendly staff, nice rooms, close to center (10 min walk), free parking
Review 126:Excellent staff, interior decor very trendy, very clean, overall very good value for money
