Reviews for The View Ella
Review 1:The view is spectacular. The rooms are huge. Latcnman and his crew are wonderfully helpful and full of information on the wonderful area. The tea and arack delicious. Thankyou Latchman for being such a fine host.
Review 2:Bad Wi-fi even in the common areas, breakfast a bit poor.
Review 3:The view is indeed amazing, and the swimming pool is great. It has a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Going to the city is really easy, and takes less than 10 minutes.
Review 4:- family room was quite big but rather dark and not very clean, strange smell inside - breakfast was very basic and boring: toast, omelette, no fruits - absolutely not worth paying that much for a nice view
Review 5:- quite spectacular view of Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock - friendly owner, gave us some hints where to go etc.
Review 6:I must tell people our experience here where our 2year old fell 2m down into a storm water drain who's lid was not secured down. Thankfully he was ok but it could have been disastrous. We told them very firmly it needed to be bolted down, hopefully they rectify it immediately. Also the stair rail to the upstairs rooms is not child friendly, if you are traveling with children ask for a down stairs room.
Review 7:Amazing views! Great pool with grassy area looking out over the mountains
Review 8:Poor WiFi. Shower temperature difficult to control leading to scalding or cold water. Getting there from the station was further than the map suggested. Current building works.
Review 9:That terrace view. Huge comfortable rooms. 4 poster bed. Readily available staff. Good laundry service.
Review 10:Dinner area is sad ( no music, no tv) and the quality of the food is average. The manager is not really good at customer relationship.
Review 11:Wonderful view over the mountains. Watching the sun rising is a must given the location of the hotel.Good staff to take care of anything.
Review 12:This hotel has basic facilities but very pleasant, helpful staff (sorry I didn't leave a tip to the young man who served us breakfast, you definitely deserved it but I'm not accustomed to tipping). We had an en-suite room and there was a table and comfyish chairs outside for eating and relaxing. But the views! Definitely better to stay here than somewhere in the middle of the village. The views were actually better than at the pricier resorts. Would stay here again.
Review 13:Evening food was ok, but quite expensive for what it was.
Review 14:Nice rooms all opening onto verandah. Great views of Ella Gap. The owner is in the process of building a swimming pool.
Review 15:Pretty noisy in the mornings - we were upstairs and the noise just echoed up from downstairs. Room was quite basic - no lamps or side tables to put a glass of water next to the bed. Poor shower and wi fi.
Review 16:Young staff were lovely and worked hard to please. They did a great job. Easy short walk to the town. Great curry dinner with lots of tasty side dishes. Sensational view. New pool will be great - looked all completed and ready to fill.
Review 17:Single bed was not comfortable. Missing the small amenities like soap, shampoo , drinking water. The sensor light in the bathroom was annoying. Pls change to a regular light. Shower water pressure was a bit low.
Review 18:The view from our room / balcony (top floor) was outstanding. Great place to sit and watch the sun rise over Mini Adams peak and Ella Rock. Room was spacious. Double bed was comfy. Breakfast was served at our balcony - so nice!
Review 19:Really friendly and helpful staff who helped us plan our short stay, to make the most of our time in Ella. The hostel has amazing views, its quiet yet only a short 5 minute walk into the main strip. We had a sri lankan dinner at the hostel which was delicious and made fresh for us.
Review 20:Hotel under construction Really bad internet No water to drink in rooms!!
Review 21:Beautiful view, and quite nice localisation (if you know how go to city its ok - by the way go through the railroad tracks)
Review 22:The view of 180 degrees is truly amazing from the terrace on the top. The staff couldn't be more helpful, including a late home-cooked dinner on our arrival.
Review 23:It is a simple backpackers hotel you should not book via a site. Just go there and negotiate about the price. For sure you can get a lower price (40 to 50%) than mentioned on sites! A lot of hotels are under construction. This One as well.
Review 24:The view is stunning!
Review 25:A really nice place with a perfect location up on the hill, 5 minutes walk from town. Wonderful view from the terrace! Friendly and helpful staff. Clean, basic rooms. Nothing to complain about. A good atmosphere! Big plus that we could keep our room an extra hour on check out day, to make a hike and then shower off before leaving! Would absolutely recommend this place.
Review 26:No electricity when we arrived, then came on and off a few times during the evening Bad road even worse at night Sheets not clean
Review 27:great views friendly staff who cooked us a meal by gaslight building has loads of character
Review 28:It need to be more mordanized. The road to the property need more works to be done! The internet connection need to reflect its real existance!
Review 29:The view is amazing! Out of the very friendly staffs, one person was really extra ordinary, his name is Nimal!
Review 30:It's really difficult to find the place. Moreover, a new house may be founded now, the hotel looks like a construction site.
Review 31:You can watch thousands of star at night. The room is comfortable as well.
Review 32:Breakfast was ok - and the hotel was quite hard to get to as the road was damaged. Ella is awesome though, vibrant, fun town, lots to see and explore.
Review 33:Had the best sleep here and was woken up by the most incredible view. Staff were friendly and helpful and the other people staying at the place were friendly, would have been a good opportunity to socialise had we not been so tired!
Review 34:The location of this hotel is good, but its on the top of hill. So you have to go by yourself, because neither car nor tuc-tuc (three-heels) not drive to this place. But is about 50 metres. And to Ella city is about 100 metres.
Review 35:there wasnt enough hot water for 3 of us. Towels and sheets could be cleaner.
Review 36:The view was nice, staff were warm and friendly. Shared terrace and the table in front of the room was really nice.
Review 37:Amazing location, easy walk into town, around 5 mins. Best view of the surrounding mountains and the Ella gap, the building is perfectly positioned with a huge balcony upstairs to relax on and take in the view. The staff were very accommodating, attentive without being intrusive, and full of recommendations for what to do in the area and also great for accommodation options further afield - we stayed in a cabin in Tissa recommended by the owner, it was also fantastic. Breakfast was great and so was dinner - delicious rice & curry, one of the best we had. The guys will also serve you as much as you can eat! Rooms were clean and bed comfortable. Overall we would highly recommendnd The View to friends and family!!
Review 38:Not sure if it was train or my jet lag...I woke up a few times at night and early morning.
Review 39:I wanted a nice clean place with the Ocean view and close to city centre. This fit the bill perfectly and the price was right. Highlights are morning Coffee on the rooftop terrace and watching the sunset. It is an owner managed property and it shows. Yarl was absolutely fantastic.
Review 40:The hotel is quite close to Ella village, looking at the linear distance. To get to the hotel though, you have to drive a VERY small, poor and narrow road and you won't even get all the way up to the hotel. On our way from the hotel, everyone except the driver had to get out of the car to make it up the steep incline towards the main road. When we arrived there was no electricity. Luckily it came back just before dark, about 7 hours after our arrival. I guess the staff was kind of helpful but very few of them spoke any English at all. When we asked about how to get to Ella without a car, they suggested we'd walk through the bush along a railroad track. "It's very easy", they said. Our guide said we absolutely should not do that, as it was dangerous considering both the risk of a train passing by, and the risk of dangerous animals (especially snakes) in the woods. Luckily, we managed to get hold of a tuktuk. When we got into our room, there were three spiders in the bathroom. We asked the staff to remove them, but they said the spiders weren't dangerous. We told them to remove them anyway, which they then did. Later, we found a gecko in the room as well, and asked to change room. All the other rooms available had geckos in them as well though, except one where we instead found a spider in the bathroom (and later a gecko sneaked in as well!). If you're expecting a hotel similar to European average 3 stars-standard, this is not the place to stay. If you're used to camping and sleeping in tents, you might be happy with the standard of this hotel.
Review 41:Nice view and pretty good wi-fi, during the periods when there was electricity. Good breakfast.
Review 42:Noisy at night. The downstairs acts like a speaker box echoing the chaotic kitchen noises. The tortured dog next door barked for hours ( not the views fault). The staff were lovely but the service is a bit faulty towers. There comes a point after asking 3 different staff for the same thing a couple of times each without a result that you begin to wonder if it's a practical joke.
Review 43:The view is spectacular and the staff very friendly. The beds are comfortable and the bathroom functional. The place is clean overall.
Review 44:Old mattress dented in the middle. Very uncomfortable
Review 45:Friendly and helpful staff. Unbelievable views. Close to town and train station (seven-minute walk via the shortcut)
Review 46:Vehicle access is a bit tricky, also signage could be improved given that the hotel is actually by close to town.
Review 47:Great view, clean room.Breakfast is served on your private terrace which is very nice.Dinner was tasty, also breakfast. The staff were so helpful, especially the manager giving out local knowledge and assisting with transport. There is a shortcut to town,by foot making this hotels great location. The vehicle access though is difficult so you may need to stop just before and walk the last part.
Review 48:- Wifi was unreliable/slow
Review 49:- Location and view. 5 mins tuk tuk from the station (further than the 500m given in the description and mostly uphill on a track, so I suggest a tuk tuk). Looking at the Ella gap and rock - not many Ella hotels have this view! - Waiter is lovely and very attentive. Even managed to get our pre-ordered meal to us on time during a 1 hour power cut - All rooms have a terrace. The garden rooms are particularly well-located - Breakfast served on your room terrace
Review 50:Nothing
Review 51:What impressed me is that the room view and the hardworking manager I'm not sure, he is the guy that I learned a lot from him. He has a small piece of paper when he talks to Chinese , he likes to learn many Chinese words and his spirit and dream I will never forget. Plus , he is the most unforgettable thing in Ella.
Review 52:There is nothing I didn't like.
Review 53:The 'View' was incredible, I couldn't get enough of it. We ate breakfast everyday right outside our room. If you give them advance notice, ask for the Sri Lankan breakfast. The room was spacious and comfortable. They shower was good. The staff were awesome, so nice and helpful. The food there is really good, but they need a few hours notice.
Review 54:Like most guesthouses in Ella, difficult to reach by car. But that's not really an issue as you can walk down to the city in a few minutes.
Review 55:Super friendly staff Good breakfast Best view for sunrise from the terrace or the rooftop Comfortable and clean room Minutes' walk from the city center
Review 56:good location 5 minute walk to Ella town (bring a flashlight), fabulous view on Ella gap, very friendly and helpfull staff and simple but nice breakfast
Review 57:The view over Ella's Gap was amazing. Staff Namal was fantastic. Linen was poor quality and the bed could have done with a thicker blanket or a nice Duvet.
Review 58:the bed was hard as a rock so unfortunatley i didnt have a comfortable sleep at all.
Review 59:the view is absolutley incredible - unbeatable and i cant believe a hotel has this ! service is amazing and the staff are so helpful, we also had a lovely traditional dinner
Review 60:hot water system needs a lot of effort to control. Dinner was not palatable to all of us... may be our tastes are different. But i think menu and meals need attention. Why not serve a good upcountry tea ?comfortable
Review 61:the view, spacious room, comfortable beds
Review 62:Our bath room window faced the dining hall..
Review 63:The service was first rate, the young gentle man n manger looked after us really well. Food was fantastic and the gentle man set up a nice romantic dinner on the roof top for us. Thank you for looking after us! We definitely recommend this place. Great value :D
Review 64:the facility is okay, wifi is not stronge
Review 65:1 view is so beautiful, u can see train passing the city and mountain; also the falls 2 staff are warm heart
Review 66:The location of the hotel, it's too difficult to find out.
Review 67:Staffs are amazing and friendly. Food is great. Room is awesome. The view is like a dream come true.
Review 68:Dining room has no atmosphere, better have food on your ownterrace. 10% servicecosts were add to the bill, be aware of this.We did not pay this.
Review 69:Bed, bathroom, friendly staff, nice view, nice maintained garden
Review 70:The hotel is up a steep dirt track - a little tricky to find in the dark when we arrived
Review 71:Lovely staff, very accommodating and helped us organise our day trips Beautiful views of Ella Good wifi
Review 72:The "same breakfast" as all other hotels (eggs, toast, fruit and jelly) were is the Sri Lankan nice food? The rice and curry was ok. Our matrass was not so good however we mentionned it and they seemed as it would be solved.
Review 73:The staff was very helpfull, the view was stunning, we booked a great guide with the guesthouse for going up to ella rock, after the good discription of the route (you just need to know) you walk into Ella downtown in 5 minutes (we loved the town) overall a very nice stay in
Review 74:Wifi was sometimes slow
Review 75:Nimal works at the view and is really kind and a great host. Really enjoyed the stay. Lovely food and great view of Ella and the mountains.
Review 76:Localisation is on the one hand a great advantage - great view, but on the other cause problem with getting to the center - going along railway by night is not so nice(10 minutes walk)... You can always use a tuktuk:)
Review 77:Great view Tasty meals Nice, helpful personnel We came late and it was already dark, but manager sent one guy with us, who showed us a way to the city centre (sounds funny, but you need to use railway to get to the city)
Review 78:Beautiful view and lots of lovely birds. Good shower and well fitting mosquito net. Very steep access and an interesting walk into Ella, down the hill and along the railway line, take a torch. Room was not large but adequate. Try to choose one of the rooms with a covered patio if you want to eat breakfast in the garden otherwise you will eat breakfast in the dining room which doesn't have a view..
Review 79:There isn't a communal lounge space just a rather basic dining room with a TV on all the time. So it's either sit outside or stay in your room in the evening, unless you go down into Ella. It's fine for a couple of nights though.
Review 80:We got up to see the sunrise over the misty mountains accompanied by chanting from the dome of the temple in the valley. No photograph or film could capture something like that.
Review 81:Difficult access you need a 3 wheeler ride of about 300 m over bumpy road. Trees need to be trimmed so that the view is fully revealed
Review 82:Very helpful waiter Neemal nothing too much trouble The rest of the staff were also good . View down the Ella gap relaxing
Review 83:We really loved the location of The View. Just a short walk down the hill, along the railway line and there you were right in the middle of town. Best thing of all was the magnificent view of Ella Gap straight out in front of the hotel and a quiet location away from all the traffic noise (although you do hear the train early in the morning). Friendly, helpful and accommodating staff and really great food in the restaurant. Don't look any further.
Review 84:The booking document indicated that we'll get a room with a TV, but there were none. We booked two rooms (one double and one triple) but none had a TV. I specifically looked for the availability of a TV while doing the booking, but was really disappointed when there was none, as I wouldn't have booked this if I knew the truth. The Booking.com should really put pressure to the hotel to advertise only the true info. Rooms were barely enough for the beds, and seating space is outside of the room. Once you are in the room, there was nothing to do. The access road to the hotel is very poor, and even the tuk-tuk charges much more due to poor access road.
Review 85:The view from the hotel is excellent. The catering staff were very polite and tried to accommodate our requests.
Review 86:The steep and slippery path to the hotel and it's noisy. I would suggest the use of earplugs.
Review 87:The view is amazing and the staff friendly and helpful
Review 88:Changed our room as the first room we were in was damp making it a bit smelly with lots of flies.
Review 89:Fantastic views. Spacious comfortable, clean room. Good food and a very attentive waiter.
Review 90:The weather, but that wasn't The View's fault
Review 91:The place was clean, the furnishings were nice, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful - and the view was amazing!
Review 92:-The road to the hotel was muddy and our vehicle can't reach the hotel & we waited for an hour after arguing with them to offer us a tuk tuk & yet, the tuk tuk couldn't make and we had to walk in the mud to reach the hotel. - They showed us more than one room which having a water leakage because of the rain & the rooms were full bugs & insects. In addition the doors were not closing. The manager kept apologizing giving the rain as an excuse. - The electricity was cut for more than an hour & the manager came to us to apologize and he offered us something to eat as an apology for the inconvenience for free and we accepted to have french fries. The 2nd day during the check out we found him including the fries in our bill!!!
Review 93:The view only!
Review 94:Shower - can't say it was working. AC was not working but they put fan in the room. Bed light not working Road to reach hotel is horrible
Review 95:View amazing. Bathroom clean, room big and clean.
Review 96:the manager at first was a little unpatient in the beginning, but after that seemed to be friendly and helpfull.
Review 97:beautiful room with lot of light. Laundry service ok. I really enjoyed the breakfast, on the terrace, in the morningsun. Friendly staff.
Review 98:Tricky to find at first if you arrive at night, but once you get your bearings the shortcut into town along the railway is fun and very quick. You feel separate from the town but still able to reach it in a matter of minutes. Best view we had in Sri Lanka and extremely friendly staff as well as a lovely breakfast with fantastic poached eggs!
Review 99:Getting there is a bit hard if it rains (we had to walk up through a bit of a muddy patch). The shower head had not much pressure. The internet can be a bit patchy sometimes
Review 100:friendly staff, great food, very helpful and friendly, the owner helped us planning the rest of the trip and also gave us very helpful information on things to do in Ella.
Review 101:This was one of the worst experiences I have. A leaking toilet sewer pipe that was never repaired despite all assurances. Torrential rain the night of arrival which prevented the taxi getting to the hotel. We were expected to walk up the 200 metre muddy dirt road in the torrential rain. We ended up staying somewhere else on the first night. The view is great. However, the hotel is run down.
Review 102:The view.
Review 103:A little out of the way from any services & shops. The biggest issue was there was no air conditioning and no ceiling fans. The weather was just OK when I was there, but any warmer and this would have been an issue.
Review 104:It was a nice modern hotel located at the top of a hill with great views.
Review 105:Shortcut to town is steep. Take a tuk tuk to get up here from the train station. Shower has little pressure. Automatic light in the bathroom is a little annoying. But will stay here again.
Review 106:The stunning view, friendly staff, great food, good service, lovely sri lanka furnitures, comfy bed, beautiful room set up with private lazy chair on the porch to relax, good wifi, clean bathroom. They let us eat in front of our room which has nice table and chairs and they delivered foods there also set up another table for our pot of tea we ordered. Simple and comfortable but beautifully set up on a hill with amazing view. And great value too.
Review 107:From the main road to the hotel, there is a very dangerous muddy road. We were very scared when our driver drove the car off the steep slope. Then our car got stuck in the middle of the mud! The hotel told us it was safe to drive there. That is not true. The hotel should have told us to get on a local tuk tuk to get off the main road and arrive there. That was what we did when we left the place the next day. Our kind driver was so worried then.
Review 108:The view is indeed amazing. We stayed on the top floor which has a big balcony facing the Ella Gap, Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock. So we didn't go to climb these places. Staying one night in this place and watching the sunrise is wonderful enough.
Review 109:Wake up is 6.30am as staff starts making a lot of noise every day. Daytime you can expect loud local music (manager is away, other staff turns up the big speakers) all over hotel so you cant even hear a movie from your laptop. The 12-14year old staff starts burning leaves and a pile of plastic bottles so most of the hotel fills with toxic plastic burning smoke. If the owner and his friend want to entertain a couple of visiting girls then it seems to be ok to remove your porch furniture without even polite asking and using it themselves elsewhere. Breakfast is simple , have to wait a long time to get it and 3 days in a row they managed to mix up the order. Great location but so pity they dont care about customers much. I do have to say that the manager was the only nice caring person there.
Review 110:Location is great with a great view on a hill looking over Ella rock and other mountains. Town is 5min walk. Manager is nice but unfortunately he is the only good staff they have there. Difficult steep access by car but still possible with a regular 2 wheel drive car.
Review 111:Nothing relevant
Review 112:The view is stunning,a few minutes walk to the city center via the railway tracks. Really beautiful room with wood floor, private terrasse and a cute garden. The staff is helpful and smily. The breakfast is good
Review 113:- nice view - very kind staff - amaizing dishes - no problem with check in/out - when you ask for everything, they do it for you (transport, tour ect.)
Review 114:Towels were very small
Review 115:Location, size of rooms and availability of a triple room as we were a family of 3 travelling together. Great spacious balcony. Unobtrusive but helpful staff / owner. Great natural scenery and excellent walking routes from the hotel.
Review 116:A bit out of the way, though a shortcut along the railway made it a bit closer to the village.
Review 117:A spacious room with a breathtaking view from the terrace.
Review 118:The food is nothing to write home about and the restaurant area lacks atmosphere, but there are many nice eateries in Ella, so this should not put you off The View.
Review 119:We loved the view and the family room was clean and spacious.
Review 120:The staff didn't understand much, weren't able to give directions into town and it was difficult to order food. Food was very average and over priced. There were ants in the bathroom and my ensuite shared a wall and a window with the hotel dining room so noises could be heard straight through. The owner was bossy and rude and a little creepy (sat outside my room and waited for me to return). There are better places to stay in Ella!
Review 121:Beautiful view, nicely situated room.
Review 122:A little bit far away from the town bars, but it's not a problem to walk 15 minutes or to take a tuk-tuk)
Review 123:This hotel is the ideal place to relax: - quiet and restful place, - amazing view above the town & mountains, - nice, well-attended garden, - very attentive and friendly staff, always ready to answer any question (The manager found perfect solutions for some minor problems that we encountered during our trip (he organised Ella outskirts voyage & massage session for us and helped us with further transport transfer), - very cosy room, - quite good and well served breakfast right in the garden, - nice location (it's about 750 m from the road so there's no noise in the room). Anyway, ideal place to stay!
Review 124:Mattress was hard (really hard and thin) and showers cold.
Review 125:Location above town was great as was the view. Ella is a great stop for anyone looking to get outdoors and into a small village. One of the best dinners so far.
Review 126:All good.
Review 127:Great view, fun staff, easy short cut to the centre of the village.
Review 128:Cleanliness in the dining area could have been improved.
Review 129:Location and views. Nice spacious rooms.
Review 130:Road to the hotel is out of shape.
Review 131:We loved the breakfast with The View over the mountains!! The staff was extremely helpful and kind The room was simple but comfortable
Review 132:The view was fabulous
Review 133:Poor WIFI speed and signal. Very low water pressure in shower.
Review 134:Incredible view, staff very friendly and quick to help.
