Reviews for Grand Hotel Et Des Palmes

Review 1:Corridors and bedroom carpets, windows and furniture are now sadly too old and desperately need changing to match guests high expectations of a 5 star hotel. Why is the restaurant closed?

Review 2:Ambience,hystory and the tasteful opulence of hotel. beautiful linen, amazing surroundings, professional staff.

Review 3:very busy central street of town, need improvment whole building, old grand big hotel with history, but too big to handle or luck of money... Breakfast room very busy, food was OK... Christmas lunch not siutable for English customer, we could not eat much, instead have a botle cheep vine and glass champanie etc...

Review 4:room service

Review 5:The carpets in my room were very dirty and it was really small. In addition, wifi is based on voucher, which allows only 200 mb.Then you have to ask on reception another wifi voucher.

Review 6:The breakfast table was reasonably well served.

Review 7:The room was a little dated. Wall mounted shower was cold despite being told to switch all taps on to get it warm.

Review 8:Super comfy bed! Nice breakfast, great location.

Review 9:When we arrived there was a wet towel in the shower and a huge cockroach, I told the staff as we headed out, but they had not dealt with it by the time we came back (quite late!) so had to deal with it myself. Probably a common thing with climate to have bugs but wish they'd got it!

Review 10:Beautiful hotel, good location for the port and the centre, lovely breakfast

Review 11:The Hotel need a restauration, the carpet in the room is very dirty and everywhere is huminidity. Far to expensive for the poor condition of the Hotel and the cheap breakfast of low quality products.

Review 12:The Hotel is in the center of the city and everything is very close.

Review 13:Noisey banging of doors in the morning. Cleaners noisey in morning, often talking loudly on mobiles. No evening meals available. Carpets a little stained

Review 14:The decor, location, price

Review 15:We liked the old grandness of the place , but is in need of a desperate face lift. ,will not be going back anytime soon sorry.

Review 16:The buffet breakfast was good ,our original room was discusting , the carpet looked like a heard of elephants had just walked through and the view was of the interior building. Some delux double.

Review 17:We had a spacious comfortable room. Quiet apart from a fairly noisy air conditioner. That did not detract from a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The staff were charming and very helpful. I would certainly stay there again when we next visit Palermo.

Review 18:Staff was not helpful and sometimes borderline rude. Very difficult to leave car at hotel--minimal space on heavy traffic road. Car valets never in sight. Restaurant recommendations terse and poorly received.

Review 19:Lobby was beautiful.

Review 20:Request for anniversary flowers/wine (at my expense) ignored Room dimensions smaller than advertised for 'Superior double' - may have been a standard room. Mould on room ceiling and corridor walls. Frayed, worn carpet in public areas. Staff stand-offish and at times unwelcoming (reception) Wifi inconsistent and slow. No mini bar prices listed, charged for water (other Sicilian hotels, inc Best Western, did not do this) Hotel bar expensive

Review 21:Excellent location Plush foyer and bar Generous breakfast. Good air conditioning and water pressure

Review 22:our room was not nice and we had some small cockraoches inside the room - this is a no no - the rooms and public areas need for sure quite some attention and investment

Review 23:Wonderful old Grand Hotel that you have the feeling that Caruso is still allive and singing inside

Review 24:The hotel needs an upgrade, dirty carpets, shabby. Furniture vaguely sad. The staff tries hard . The breakfast was very pleasant.

Review 25:The hotel is old, like a dowager, evoked images of a grander era.the public spaces are lovely and the room large. We told the concierge that our room smelled smokey, they moved us with no questions to a better one.

Review 26:No hot water, and staff made no effort to resolve the problem, because they were overworked and management was nowhere to be seen. The carpets are disgustingly old and dirty. Very tired place. What a disappointment!

Review 27:Not everyone spoke English at the front desk.they seemed very busy. Over worked with calls.ect.one man only wanted to speak italian to me when no one else was around?the housekeeping was GREAT. So was the maintenance staff.I think the front desk was just overwhelmed with guests.

Review 28:Location.

Review 29:Nothing really. Location a little bit out of walking distance for the main tourist areas - but this has pros and cons. and if you want something modern and slick this is not the place for you, but has its own charm.

Review 30:comfortable, rooms very good, a little bit shabby in the corridors - faded glory really. Comfortable room, good breakfasts. Excellent value for money. Some nice local eating places which were not touristy and again, good value.

Review 31:the parking charge of 21 euros for 24 hours i thought was excessive

Review 32:The lovely old fashioned decor takes you back to an old era which makes it very charming-the staff are very helpful-we were given almost a suite which was fantastic-the breakfast room was lovely and plentiful-they now have free wi fi in the hotel which worked very well-the ac was amazing and very efficient-the location is perfect-if you can overlook the odd carpet looking a bit bare and the furnishings a bit tired you can buy into the atmosphere which is fun ps. very affordable hotel

Review 33:A grand old lady who has seen better days, but still with some style. A historically correct restoration of the dining room would earn it top marks. Well located for restaurants etc.

Review 34:Public toilet area smelt of stale urine. Staff not very friendly. General point, Palermo city dirty and traffic manic

Review 35:Very spacious room, the hotel public areas oozed old world charm and the grace of a bygone era.

Review 36:The shower was broken - its part that you can take off had extremely weak water pressure and was barely warm (or very hot). The part over the head had only cold water. The condition didn't work normally - it began to work for a very short moment and then suddenly turned off by himself.

Review 37:Beautiful design of main hall and breakfast room. Fantastic history of the hotel - here Wagner completed his "Parsifal" and here stayed many other famous persons. Good breakfast - fresh fruits, sausages, ham, eggs, fresh ricotta and mozarella, yoghurt, lot of cakes. Good shampoo and and body lotion. The staff was helpful - after our request they changed our room without streeet view to the better one with big terrace with a good view on the neighbor church. The location is also very good - big shopping street in calm part of the city, good restaurants around, 20-30 minutes on foot to the train station and to via Etnea.

Review 38:Our room was behind a fire door marked 'Private Staff Only' which was permanently closed to the hotel guests. The Corridor had a strong odour of dust and stale smoke with carpet which had lifted and was buckled all over the place. I had to hold my breath every time we went from the lift to the door of the room due to the stink of old smoke hanging around. Our room was listed as a 'classic' room, but I never expected to be 'hidden' behind a 'Private Staff Only' door, in an un-used part of the hotel. We were the only ones in this part of the hotel. I can't believe we were the only people who booked this style of room as it was advertised on Booking.com

Review 39:Friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast. Lovely grand building.

Review 40:Inefficient check-in & check-out, long walk to room, fragile elevators,

Review 41:Central, grand style, full of character, clean , helpful staff, excellent breakfast.

Review 42:Some furniture, fixtures etc were a little dated - but for the price this was a little thing. The location was good - but was a decent walk (15 mins) from the station, close enough walking distance to main attractions too.

Review 43:Lovely hotel, palatial feel

Review 44:The rooms were a bit battered with the pass of time. The bathrooms could do with a refurbishment. A better wifi system would also be nice.

Review 45:The hotel still has the charm that once had. The downstairs area is elegant and the bar is very nice for a pre-dinner drink. The staff is nice and helpful. The location is excellent! Close to the old town.

Review 46:The desk staff disorganized and not knowledgeable. We were promised a room with 2 twin beds but were given a queen room without explanation. The staff was not accommodating. Location a bit far from the sights.

Review 47:Classical amenities and facilities. Excellent breakfast in the ballroom.

Review 48:still have to pay for internet. not very modern.

Review 49:the hotel has some of the old grandeur of hotels from the period it was build. comfortable rooms, with good beds. lovely breakfast buffet centre of the city, near Theater Massimo, where all the restaurants are

Review 50:The breakfast room and breakfast quality : just around the corner on via principe Belmonte are some lovely cafe's which offer the best quality breakfast , for example Spinnato

Review 51:The hotel rooms are lovely, very clean and very comfortable bed . The bathroom was also ok, although a little aged. Our real disappointment was the breakfast: the room where it is served looked very tired and really needed refreshing, The food served for breakfast was very poor, mini frozen croissants and very poor quality of the rest of the food. It's a shame that such a beautiful hotel fails to serve fresh food to customers.

Review 52:In 2015 in the information age i do not understand how some hotels think charging 9€/day for wifi is acceptable. When bars, fast food restaurants, run-down cheap hotels have free wifi-s than I'd expext nice hotels to have it also. Not having it is simy prehistoric to me

Review 53:Location is very central, easy to walk antlywhere. Staff if professional hotel interior is like old times rich Sicilian decoration. Some of the carpets are due for replacement but i am sure they are doing it continuously

Review 54:On arrival we felt like we were being talked down to a bit. We had no idea of what or where the parking was and so we had to drop the vehicle out the front which seemed to annoy the chap on Reception. I think we had been spoilt by the other locations and hotels of our Sicilian trip before landing in Palermo.

Review 55:Not really impressed with any of it.

Review 56:Free wifi only in lobby. Building needs restoration/painting eg external window frames but this didn't impact our enjoyment.

Review 57:Old word charm. Good location. Clean.

Review 58:Needs updating. Carpet needs to be replaced and paint needs touching up . Bartender needs to know how to make a dry martini.

Review 59:Elegant hotel from another era. Large, quiet, comfortable room with 2 French doors. It had a large bathroom with both a shower and a tub.

Review 60:I immediately got re-dressed had my friend pack up our things as I went to the front desk requesting a room change on a different floor of the hotel. The front desk was exceptionally accommodating for the change HOWEVER we didn't sleep well that evening. This location is perfect near shops & dining, staff is cordial, breakfast was exceptional, the facility seriously needs renovation. Would not return or recommend until fully renovated.

Review 61:It's an old hotel past it's time ... but while that may be ok, the only way to get free wifi is in the lobby. It was our first time to palermo and would like to think there's a better option out there.

Review 62:Valet parking.

Review 63:Dominico was the only friendly and helpful staff member. One of the managers had a loud, aggressive argument with one of the cleaners, in front of us. Parking should be included with this level of hotel. Staff were unhelpful when it came to 'where to park. Good location

Review 64:It time for free in-room internet.

Review 65:The staff, especially Antonio and Domenico, could not have been more helpful. The abundant breakfast in a ballroom with painted ceilings, damask walls, and parquet floors was a treat.

Review 66:noisy traffic at night even though room overlooked side street and had secondary double glazing

Review 67:helpful friendly reception staff Car parked and returned with ease

Review 68:Lack of modern luxury. The only hotel I have ever stayed in where a porter gave me directions to my room without offering to carry the luggage. No restaurant open on the Sunday we were there and no sign of room service either. The bar has moved to where the concierge used to be. Hotel filled with coaches of tourists who deserve better service and to have to pay for wifi...

Review 69:Beautiful old Palace with a wonderful breakfast room and old fashioned atmosphere. Renovated room was comfortable.

Review 70:WIFI is chargeable in your room, Bar staff not always around when you are waiting for a drink. Chef not very helpful, when I asked if I could have a fried egg, (they said there were none left, which I can not believe the hotel would run out of eggs!).

Review 71:Excellent room

Review 72:The free wifi applies only to the lobby and there is a €9 charge per day per person to have wifi in the room.

Review 73:The high ceilings in the lobby and the room were great. The bathroom was fantastic too.

Review 74:it needs repair i dont want to say renovation because interiors and furniture are antiques and are of highest qualility they should be kept ! but i guess it needs a fortune to repair them , on the other hand in renewed condition it would deserve at least 3 times of todays price

Review 75:beautiful traditional hotel ,a real palace at excellent location nice breakfast value for money

Review 76:Parking was extortionate. 21 Euro per night. The hotel was tired and in need of decorationa and modernisation of amenities. Palermo

Review 77:Although I would never visit Palermo again, if you want to be central and close to the shops this hotel is good for that.

Review 78:Nothing.

Review 79:The fabulous marble foyer, beautiful breakfast room & all round old school glamour. Great location for visiting the city with good bus connections to Central station and the beach resort. Great assistance from the friendly concierge & reception staff, they made the visit easy to plan. Strongly recommend.

Review 80:Wifi was a little sketchy, parking is kind of spendy but they do a good job with getting your car to you quickly with valets

Review 81:Huge rooms, comfortable beds, good bathrooms but hotel is a little run down around the edges. Still a great place to stay, good value.

Review 82:No complaints.

Review 83:Service was excellent with the staff going out of their way to be helpful. Rooms were large and had sofas to sit on and share wine with friends. Very good restaurants and the sights were withing walking distance. Room rates quite reasonable.

Review 84:WiFi costs extra and ultimately did not work anywhere (room wifi, lobby wifi, lobby computers). This is 2014. Totally unacceptable.

Review 85:Any good sides were overshadowed by the complete lack of free and functioning Internet.

Review 86:Run down & dirty. The hotel belongs to a group currently under financial difficulties. The rooms have been partially redone (windows do not close, carpet very very dirty): quite depressing overall and extremely overpriced for the state of the facilities

Review 87:The breakfast room & the bathroom

Review 88:some rooms on the road are noisy (old but charming wooden double windows do not offer good noise insulation). Ask for inner courtyard rooms. A free wifi is available only in the lobby. It would be nice to have a free wifi in the rooms too (but the Swisscom pay-per-hour connection is very good).

Review 89:Entering the hall of Grabd Hotel et des Palmes is like entering in the Gattopardo novel of Tomasi di Lampedusa. The slightly undermantained hotel has a flair unique to few other hotels: Pera Oakace of Istanbul (before the recent renovation), the Quisisana in Capri and few others. Great value for money and good breakfast, charming staff and lot of marbles, art nouveau mirrors, cosy angles. Staying at the Des Jalmes is like being hosted in the mansion of an impoverished nobleman. Until some time ago old Palermitan ladies and widowers with some taste used to sell their house and move to the hotel for theirkadt sparkling days...

Review 90:Nothing not to like..

Review 91:The hotel was beautiful , although abit tired in places! The breakfast was good, lots to choose from. . The staff were very helpful and friendly and a pick up service from airport was good! The location couldn't be better, in easy reach of everything! We had a room somewhere to the rear of the hotel which was very quiet but I think if we'd been situated at the front it would of been very noisy.

Review 92:The worst was the internet connection. While the lobby was free, it cost 9 or 13€ to have it in the room. For a luxury hotel, this felt like raising the price of the room without looking like you are doing so. Also you couldn't just buy the connection for whatever time you were staying but had to buy it each day and then only after the full 24 hours had run out. As our room was very far from the desk, on several evenings I just didn't have the energy to go to the desk and have it done, but decided to do without.

Review 93:The lobby and breakfast room made you feel that you were in a great European hotel. Unfortunately, everything also felt like it needed a clean and brush up. Breakfast was fine but typical in the sense that if things ran out, nobody replaced the items; there was Sicilian Pro Seco but the bottle wasn't opened; there was a giant bowl of fruit in the centre of the buffet but it was almost impossible to reach. The sense that it was all luxurious without actually being luxurious. The staff were friendly and very helpful but perhaps a mite shorthanded. We had a good deal on the price and we certainly had value for money, but it left feeling they could do better. Next door to a taxi rank, which is important in Palermo, as taxis don't seem to cruise and you need taxis to get to quite a few places.

Review 94:Great place - so good we booked the last night there in the exact same room. No view but not a sound outside all night.

Review 95:Room, ambience and décor stunning, breakfast delightful Good location near Politieama and shopping areas.

Review 96:There was no free Wi-Fi in the room

Review 97:I liked location, style, comfort. Very nice lobby, aristocratic style. Room are comfortable, very clean/ A lot of interesting photos in the corridor/ The personnel is very friendly, they are ready to help you every time/

Review 98:Hot water supply was a bit inconsistent. and took a couple of minutes to reach a reasonable temperature.

Review 99:Quiet even though it is on a major street. We received an upgrade to a spacious suite which was gorgeous. Centrally located in Palermo. Extensive breakfast buffet in an amazing room. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 100:Front desk staff. The man we encountered during our two-day stay was always doing something else while he spoke to us, and seemed totally uninterested in our question. His replies were brief and generally not very helpful.

Review 101:Our room was very large; so was the bed, and very comfortable. Also the bathroom was great, with great shower pressure and a huge tub if you preferred a bath. The buffet for breakfast was also good.

Review 102:Difficulty using the bar as rarely staffed.

Review 103:A large and comfortable bedroom with a sofa and chairs. Good selection for breakfast. Very quiet as we were in the middle of the hotel.

Review 104:No swimming pool

Review 105:Very sumptous Hotel, the likes you see in the Older movies, Jazzy,Stylish and very comfy:here's what we Googled: Over four days, between October 12–16, 1957, the American gangster Joseph Bonanno allegedly attended a series of meetings between some high-level Sicilian and American mafiosi in the Grand Hotel des Palmes (Albergo delle Palme) in Palermo, Sicily – the most splendid in town at the time. The so-called 1957 Palermo Mafia summit has become a legendary landmark in the international illegal heroin trade in popular Mafia non-fiction. The question is if it ever took place. The details of it are still shrouded in mystery.

Review 106:We stayed only one night with nothing to complain about.

Review 107:The atmosphere of the faded grandeur of the hotel. The room was spacious for a hotel room, with a feel of a grand old home.

Review 108:Rather expensive hotel, where in the 19th century already Richard Wagner stayed. The carpeting in the rooms and upper floors is still from this time, i.e., totally worn-out and dirty! And also windows, elevators and TVs are really old and out of time; for these roomprices this is not appropriate. And everything else is not included but expensive: garage, internet, ... I don't understand why they don't even renew the carpeting in the rooms, that would not cost them too much ...

Review 109:old stylish interior at the ground floor

Review 110:The air conditioning in the rooms are appalling. I had to asked to be moved to one with a working AC. And even in that one it was very very bad. I would never recommend anyone to stay there in Summer, unless they fix that. Other than that, the hotel was just fine.

Review 111:The grandness of the building. Its history. The breakfast was also very good.

Review 112:Nothing

Review 113:When you love real Belle époque and his grandeur, than you are at the right Place! To stay in this hotel makes your trip to Palermo. Also the breakfast (in this fantastic room) is excellent!

Review 114:Free internet only available in reception, also some might think the hotel might need a bit if a spruce up

Review 115:Everything.....lovely staff, great room, decor of reception and rest and the bedroom

Review 116:WiFi Not included with enormous supplement cost. This ist really annoying!! Everything a bit old but kept very clean and quite well maintained (at least room and the great breakfast room = sala specchi)

Review 117:Typical Grand Hotel furniture and atmosphere, which we like a lot Very conveniant location Great breakfast (fresh fruit such as pineapple, watermelon, kiwi,... Plus prosciutto, ricotta, cannoli). Ask for fresh coffee instead of using dispenser! Just behind the Hotel You find some "blue areas", where we left our car at the street (€1 per hour with ticket from self service machine. Charges apply for 8am-2pm and 4pm-8pm only; obviously no limit for total parking time and therefore €10 only for whole day/night)

Review 118:Zero.

Review 119:A great lat minute deal so excellent vfm. Bedroom excellent and public rooms outstanding. 10 mins walk from the port 15 minutes walk from the main station. We were very plesed

Review 120:Would like to have eaten one night but literally no one in dining room though menu looked ok. Bar too deserted.

Review 121:The location is great short taxi to train station. Port down the road walking distance main sights. Love the lobby marble statues and staircases. Dining room where breakfast served mini Marseilles hall of mirrors. Yes it's faded grandeur but much prefer to corporate bland. Great bathroom decent hairdryer.

Review 122:The hotel could use a renovation. The carpet definitely needs to be replaced as it takes away from the overall grandeur of the hotel. The carpet was badly stained (not a good first impression) as you see the carpet before you see the room.

Review 123:The size of the rooms were great. We liked the old charm/architecture of the hotel. Breakfast was great.

Review 124:Beautiful old hotel right in the centre of Palermo and especially handy for trips out to the islands. The hotels biggest asset is its staff who cannot help you enough and are patient at polite with travellers. I needed an emergency dental appointment which they cheerfully arranged for me and found an appointment in under two hours! We followed dinner recommendations to Biondo a wonderful that we would not have found on our own.

Review 125:the lack of a swimming pool in warm summer time in Palermo.

Review 126:The history of the hotel. The old fashion it guards, manteined with cleanliness and current facilities.

Review 127:Wi fi was pretty expensive

Review 128:Beautiful old style, both in the lobby, restaurant and our room. The breakfast was nice in the beautiful restaurant. Good location, we walked everywhere.

Review 129:The most arrogant rude and disinterested front desk staff I have experienced in a long time of travelling the world.(their interest seem to be confined to business groups) Wi fi only available in the front lobby and free for only 24 hours, unlike most hotels today.

Review 130:Grand in a run down way

Review 131:Beautiful hotel, amazing history, and great for families and couples. The staff was very helpful too.

Review 132:Valet parking 35 euro/night.

Review 133:Interrior, breakfast, location.

Review 134:The carpet needs to be changed, it ruins the overall aesthetics

Review 135:Wonderful decor in the public rooms. Bedroom spacious and very comfortable. Sorted out a problem with the plumbing by moving rooms.

Review 136:Fairly run down in places

Review 137:Bit in need of a refresh/remodeling.

Review 138:Great location. Good breakfast. Grand old building.

Review 139:central location, lots of character
