Reviews for B&B Il Rifugio D'altri Tempi

Review 1:Very poor accommodation, sink didn't drain, horrid little shower cubicle, noisy room at the front, all needed a good clean and a fresh coat of paint and some work on the plumbing

Review 2:Good location

Review 3:Staff didn't occupy the reception. Tried to check in three times during 4 hours but had to call for anyone to show up. No air condition and no fan in the room.

Review 4:Location, breakfast

Review 5:The photos are NOT of the place we stayed. The first photo shows an awning that belongs to a neighbouring business. The Refugio is the hole in the wall next door. Photos of the rooms must be of the family's other B&B over the rstaurant where they serve breakfast, about 2 steep blocks from the Refugio. The queen bed was 2 camp cots put together.

Review 6:Handy location. Good breakfast.

Review 7:It is too far for breakfast, especially in bad weather. Also the people to contact with a problem, there are no staff on the premises, are not always available

Review 8:Excellent location, splendid views. In the heart of the town, near wine-shops, restaurants etc. Very near to the bus-stop and directly opposite to the fort.

Review 9:Staff was friendly but a little difficult to get in touch with. We had to call the cell numbers to find someone to check in with and when I got hold of someone, they didn't really speak English, so it was fortunate I speak a little Italian. Once we checked in there were no problems, however. Wi-Fi would be a welcome addition.

Review 10:The location was perfect, right across from the Fortezza inside Montalcino itself. The price was very reasonable and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We only had the included breakfast one day of our stay due to travel plans, but it was more than adequate. All in all I would recommend Il Refugio to anyone wanting reasonable lodging within the walls of Montalcino.

Review 11:There were no staff on hand throughout my entire stay (two nights), even during their supposed 'business hours' - including when I wanted to check-in. I had to call a number (at international rates using my mobile phone) that was written on a tiny piece of paper (that also declared their supposed business hours) stuck in the bottom corner of a window almost totally obscured by a pot plant, just to check-in upon my arrival which was during their 'hours of operation' on a week-day. I still waited for an hour before someone showed up. There was no maid service at all during my stay - so no bed made or replenishment of towels/soaps/toilet paper etc. The breakfast is not in the hotel but at a trattoria a fair walk away from the hotel. A long walk just for a very mediocre and unimpressive breakfast. Not very much choice, and none of the breakfast cereals were fresh and they tasted like cardboard (the cereals were clearly constantly left out in the open and never put away). When I first arrived at the hotel and had to wait an hour before someone arrived so I could check-in, I really wanted to just go to another hotel. But, of course, the hotel were already holding my credit card details hostage and as a minimum I would have been charged at least one night's penalty, so I really didn't have much choice. I am a regular visitor to Montalcino, but I shall never book this hotel again.

Review 12:The excellent location of this hotel is, unfortunately, the only good thing I have to say about this hotel. I gave a good rating for the Wi-Fi only because it never cut-out (a standard feature of Wi-Fi in general in Italy).

Review 13:Breakfast was down some steep alleys. Did not bother us but would be a problem for anyone with a disability.Owner not on site so had to be contacted by phone on our arrival.

Review 14:Fabulous view of the castle from our room. Great breakfast on the terrace of a neighbouring hotel (owner ran this too).Good location.

Review 15:There is no attendent there, never... This will certainly give you some kind of problem. The breafast it is not in the same place as the hotel and the quality of the Good it is not Good.

Review 16:The location is good. It is a very simple hotel but the price is also fair. The room it is not that nice but it is ok. Bathroom is so so.

Review 17:Our first impression of the lady who greeted us was 'a bit strange' but it turned out she was in fact very helpful. The breakfast was basic but the same that we paid 15 euro per person for the day before. Excellent value for money, extremely original and quaint but still very clean. More stunning a view from the bedroom window, of a medieval Italian castle you can not better.

Review 18:Was hard for us to locate. Included breakfast served at a different location well down a hill (meaning a good uphill walk back). Thought Montalcino itself was skippable.

Review 19:Felt like we were deep in old Italy. Old fashioned key to room. Shutters on windows that opened to reveal an old 14th cent. Fortress. The facade looked real and 400 yrs old.

Review 20:Good location, quiet place close to the center.

Review 21:Lack of staff, walk for breakfast and location of parking

Review 22:Wifi didnt work well in roomr

Review 23:Very friendly staff on reception in morning. Helped with my onward bookings. Didnt rush me out of room at 11am

Review 24:l view of a medieval fortress from hotel

Review 25:No kitchen. Bathroom could be renewed.

Review 26:Location is good. Breakfast is nice.

Review 27:hard to check in and find owner

Review 28:good location

Review 29:bathroom

Review 30:position

Review 31:Having to walk to another location for breakfast because they didn't serve it in the B&B when we stayed there(perhaps because it was low season?). Also, there was never really anyone around so it was a little difficult to check-out and pay for the room when we wanted to leave.

Review 32:Location and price..

Review 33:The room is tired and needed maintenance. The overhead light fixture had a blown bulb and the toilet seat was extremely old and threatened to fall off several times.

Review 34:The location is fantastic, right across the street from the medieval castle and within easy walking distance to many restaurants. If you stay, definitely ask for a room on the top floor for the views and take them up on a wine tasting of the family's label.

Review 35:WiFi can be accessible around the ground floor, front area. Not at all in the room on 3rd floor. The owner runs a restaurant and she is not always in the hotel front, I was not sure when arrived, and took some time to get in touch with her.

Review 36:Nice location, nice view of the fortress from the window. Nice cozy room.

Review 37:the hotel faces to the village main parking square - so it was very noisy

Review 38:the village where the hotel locates is just perfect and the hotel itself really fits to the surrounds.

Review 39:Breakfast was good but very simple.

Review 40:We stayed in the 'Principessa' room and it was very quaint and sort of Toscan romantic! The owners, the Padelletti family, have a Brunello wine vine yard, produce their own olive oil as well as a couple of lovely restaurants!

Review 41:Lack of automatic lighting upon after hours entry. I found the switch, but a less stable person may have trouble shedding light on their path through the lobby to the stairs.

Review 42:Good location, across from the fortress, close to travel information office. English speaking staff very helpful. Nice view of the fortress, and local restaurant discounts available.

Review 43:Comfort and breakfast

Review 50:Noisy

Review 51:Scenery

Review 52:the room was cold and they did not have heating on. There was no clear table at breakfast, nothing left to eat coffee was awful.

Review 53:nothing
