Reviews for Monaci delle Terre Nere
Review 1:Wine and food were relatively expensive compared to the majority of places we ate elsewhere in Sicily and not much variety on the set menus. Dogs barking on nearby properties at night.
Review 2:Great room with wonderful views. Fantastic position on the vineyard slopes. Staff welcoming. Good breakfast
Review 3:Fantastic tranquil location on foothills of Etna. Traditional buildings thoughtfully restored to provide high standard of accommodation with stunning views.
Review 4:I think the place has expanded a bit too fast and seems to be 'running itself' now and needs more staff and careful attention. We saw a big difference since our last stay in April 2015 which was a big disappointment. At 9.40am there was practically no breakfast left to speak of and no clean plates either - we had to ask staff to Bring more plates as otherwise it'd have gone unnoticed. The bread was so heavy and the pastries and cakes all gone and not replaced. We even had to ask for some yoghurt and all that was left was the plain sort which suited us fine but was still not quite what you'd expect when paying over 400 Eur per night! Even the fruit in our room was regrettably rotting, albeit v stylishly, in the fruit bowl. also our room was just above the restaurant which meant we heard lots of bustling around overhead until 11pm. All in all, I feel it could have been better...
Review 5:The staff were lovely and went out of their way to help, especially Federico who was an absolute credit to the place when there was a problem with the booking of my in-laws. The setting and decor remain fabulous, and dinner was good, even if on the pricey side!
Review 6:Our room was thankfully quite close to the reception and restaurant. Some if the others appeared to be a long hike away- I don't think I would have appreciated being in a room any further away. Also, dinner at the restaurant is a set menu and isn't cheap. Drinks, too , are on the pricey side, whether ordered in the restaurant or by the pool. Still worth the whole experience but it should be factored in when booking here. We were there for our honeymoon so we were happy to treat ourselves for the occasion.
Review 7:This is a beautiful, isolated gem set right beside Mount Etna. Food served is mostly produced there and is delicious. Breakfast was served outdoors, right under the trees- beautiful. We had a lovely buffet lunch by the pool, and dinner at the restaurant was wonderful. Restaurant itself is cute. Receptionist Sara was particularly courteous and constantly smiling- lovely to deal with. The swimming pool is a haven of tranquility- it was an incredibly relaxing place to be. Rooms are beautiful- lots of glass to make you feel like you're almost one with nature. Lovely high ceilings.
Review 8:As above
Review 9:Stunning setting and lovely service, but not quite 5 star facilities. No info in the rooms on facilities etc, no TV, only 2 small towels for the 2 of us, no conditioner either. Delicious breakfast, but had much better meals around Sicily than our dinner we had at the hotel. Small things, but together they built up to make this hotel not quite worth the money.,.
Review 10:Slightly more pricey than I anticipated, but totally worth every penny!
Review 11:The staff were amazing, friendly, polite and nothing was too much to ask. The food was incredible, especially the poolside buffet at lunchtime, and the environment was breathtaking, so relaxing! Absolutely perfect!
Review 12:Extremely overpriced, while following a slow food eco ethos a dinner without wine was more expensive than a 9 course degustation menu with wine at a local michelin star restaurant. I think given the isolated location they give an unreasonable mark up.
Review 13:Staff friendly and polite also very helpful. The nature of the site was stunning. The room was excellent and spacious.
Review 14:Our room wasn't ready for check-in until 5pm and the bathroom wasn't very clean (and had lots of millipedes crawling around).
Review 15:The view, the swimming pool area and the food were all great. The pool area staff were fantastic!
Review 16:The staff knew about our allergies and were trying to be accommodating but didn't clearly check the food to confirm that they didn't have the ingredients we couldn't eat - so we had a very close call.
Review 17:The view is STUNNING
Review 18:Breakfast only until 10am which can be a stretch. But the staff doesn't take the food away before 10:15/ 10:30
Review 19:Top staff! Super friendly and always up for making an extra effort
Review 20:No TV in the room - some rooms (mine anyway) looked a bit unfinished.
Review 21:Great location and splendid views. Great pool, bar by the pool and terrace for dinner. Attentive staff, especially sommelier. Food and wines and amazing.
Review 22:Compared to similar hotels in Sicily it is bit pricy for the level of the place (both hotel and restaurant). I would rate it more in the four star region...
Review 23:Wonderful place to relax, great atmosphere, friendly staff. Great breakfast outside. Excellent base to explore the Etna region.
Review 24:There was nothing to find fault with.
Review 25:The staff were so friendly, patient and efficient. The food was fresh, healthy and delicious. The room was huge, private and comfortable. The grounds and pool were uncrowded and lovely.
Review 26:It is remote, so you are fairly stuck with it as an option for food and drink and do they know that. €40+ for a bottle of wine that can be bought in other hotels/restaurants for half price. They are very non-transparent when it comes to costs, whatever you order is just charged to your room without then telling you what the cost is, so they charge you for things you don't have, as they did with us for lunch and then dispute it when we point it out. They also charge €15 for a small glass of cheap wine, which you only find out when you check out. It's a bad process and they need to question what and how they do it, as it only leads to this kind of review.
Review 27:Room in annex up a steep steep hill from main building. No telephone for communication to reception, needed when we had no hot water in evening for shower, or in other possible emergency. Not suitable for those with mobility problems.
Review 28:Beautiful location, & views, lovely food, very helpful staff. Infinity swimming pool.
Review 29:We didn't have a car. Our driver from a day tour dropped us at Monaci. This resort is not really suitable for people without a car but that is not the fault of the owners of course.
Review 30:Beautiful surroundings. Great views. So much room on the property to wander and see the gardens and orchards. Peaceful, relaxing, excellent service. Note that although it doesn't suggest this on the menu, you can order individual courses. You are not obliged to have the four courses. Servings are generous and the menu changes daily.
Review 31:Bathroom in room resembles that of a lower grade hotel. I understand that one-time use bath products are not as environmentally friendly, but the soap dispensers should still contain soap, not watered down or, worse, empty.
Review 32:Beautiful surroundings. Pool and public areas are all very nice. Food was very, very good. Staff courteous.
Review 33:It's fair to say that it's rather pricey, but nevertheless a wonderful experience. Since most of the apartments are somewhat scattered around the facility this place is not for people with trouble walking. We thought the breakfast was a little bit too "fancy" and felt more like a high / afternoon tea
Review 34:Stunningly beautiful boutique apartments, beautiful location, wonderful staff
Review 35:The location is great for an excursion up to the fabulous Etna and driving through and exploring the surrounding beautiful parks but it's much more than that. Even if you know the area already, Monaci is an experience, a venue, in itself! It's is simply beautiful in every way, so stylishly tasteful and still so welcoming, whether it's Salvatore who greets you and is so obliging and helpful, just like the rest of the waiting staff, or the fact that you are allowed to simply roam around and explore the rambling grounds and sit in fields of tall grass or marvel at all the labelled fruits and crops that grow here while imagining what it'd be like to enjoy this slice of heaven every day. Truly relaxing and pampering! Even the bathrooms are equipped with CD players and white waffled bathrobes!!! While on the pricey side, you can certainly see why!! Even breakfasts and dinners are served in 2 v differently yet v appropriately decorated rooms and incorporate as much of their own delicious produce as possible! We hope to return there with our two boys over summer as there's plenty of safe activities and spaces for little ones to enjoy, including a beautiful pool! So whether it's a romantic getaway or a family holiday you're after, Monaci fits the bill!
Review 36:Although our suite was unique it didn't have anywhere to sit other than the bed.. It was meant to be a suite but really it felt like a large bedroom. We had brought food and wine as we arrived late the first night and had to eat it off the bed.. There was one small red stool placed in front of the fire but there was 2 of us! A small sofa or 2 comfortable chairs to relax in the front of the fire place would've been ideal with a small table. When paying a high price for a 'suite' we felt slightly disappointed. There was also only one mirror.. in the bathroom. No full length mirror or no extra mirror to use if the bathroom was occupied. Also where our suite was situated it was quite dark to walk to the restaurant/main reception.. There were also quite a few bugs in our room with it being quite rustic. Not a nightmare but I'm sure I stood on about 3 centipedes! Also the wifi didn't work very well, the connection was terrible.
Review 37:Lovely place, grounds are beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. Our suite was unique as it was an old olive oil press, very rustic. Breakfast was nice with lots of home grown products. We had dinner one night in the restaurant which was fantastic and all the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly.
Review 38:Wifi didn't work in the rooms, although it was fine in the main building.
Review 39:The food and the wine. The design and thoughtfulness behind the property itself.
Review 40:Sadly, the restaurant is disappointing. Lovely that the food is sourced locally or grown on the premises, however the dishes were expensive for Italy and the quality was not good. I ordered insalate del polpo one evening( a dish commonly made by Italian housewives) and the polpo was like chewing gum. Another night the pasta with lamb ragu was far too salty. The wine list was extensive, but very pricy for Italy. Not at all good value for money!!! Relax and focus on the simple, inexpensive and fabulous foods found everywhere in Italy..match the restaurant with the villa and excellent service and you will be a winner!
Review 41:We were spoiled and treated like pampered houseguests!! Smiling warm, efficient staff made the stay an unforgettable. No request was too much. Super service.
Review 42:The only thing we could fault was the slow wi-fi connection.
Review 43:The staff offered a first class service and made us feel very welcome. A stunning set of buildings set in beautiful scenery. We will be sure to visit again!
Review 44:Other places we stayed in Sicily were similarly nice, but were significantly less expensive.
Review 45:The staff were amazing, and picking fresh oranges off the trees was definitely a highlight.
Review 46:Wifi was only reliable in main building not very good in rooms
Review 47:Rooms were in restored buildings on an old wine and olive farm Beds were extremely comfortable Restaurant was all fresh food from th farm and some of the best food I have eaten in Italy Staff were all friendly and helpful
Review 48:Our room was in newer building which didn't have the same charm as the originals
Review 49:Wonderful setting on slopes of Mt Etna, great food, delicious wine and friendly staff
Review 50:The room we had was part of what was a storage area many years ago, very large but no windows. Doors were very large and old world, beautiful, but not easy to open.
Review 51:This was like staying on a private estate. Beautiful grounds, great food and great staff. The property is filled with various fruit trees, gardens and herbs. All of which is used for the meals.
Review 52:Bathroom cleanliness not really good Breakfast poor for that price, lack of space to serve the food.
Review 53:Very confortable bed Very nice rooms, nice sights, big rooms Very good atmosphere in Living room (Reception)
Review 54:Accessiblity to hotel challenging. Dinner selection could be improved on and some what over priced as is the wine selection. Access to restaurant at night and during bad weather treacherous .
Review 55:We loved the decor, amenities, personal touch and overall friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Breakfasts are spectacular. Very warm and welcoming ambience.
Review 56:Unfortunately they take advantage of the fact that there are no restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The food and drinks are ridiculous overpriced and offers low quality compared to what you pay.
Review 57:Beautiful setting on the slope of Etna, close to nature, friendly staff. Several beautiful villages/smaller towns with good restaurants within driving distance.
Review 58:Menu for 48 Euro excluding wine is on the high side. Small bathroom.
Review 59:Actually almost everything was excellent:- nice location and building - good room - very nice pool and pool area - friendly and good staff - top breakfast - last but not least, execllent food
Review 60:The tranquility and views of the countryside and sea from the pool area; extremely stylish and rustic atmosphere; incredible service from people who genuinely seem to love their job - most of all, unbelievably good, simple, wholesome Sicilian cooking.
Review 61:A fantastic place to relax, quite, view to Mount Ätna and the sea, friendly and very obliging staff, excellent kitchen, beautiful pool - just wonderful to relax a couple days. Thank you very much for your hospitality - we will come back!
Review 62:The surrounding towns aren't the best. However don't let this put you off. Push past your barriers and go and enjoy a rustic Italian experience.
Review 63:The drive from the airport wasn't very pleasant the towns on the way to the place seemed slightly run down however probably just the norm for South Italy. As it was our first time we were starting to feel as though we had made the wrong choice! However on arrival to the estate we were greeted by a very nice chap who spoke excellent English & Italian. He offered us a drink & showed us round. The place is truly amazing. We had the most amazing food cooked by chef Pino. we watched a movie in the open air cinema and watching lava pur out the volcano at night (don't worry its a long way away). A must try for anyone wanting to discover Sicily and in this part of Italy. Highly recommended!!
Review 64:Amazing location on the side of Mount Etna - which was erupting during our trip! Staff were extremely helpful, and even towed our car when we got a little too close to the cliff's edge while parking. Would love to visit again.
Review 65:There are stray dogs within the hotel area which the hotel claim they cannot remove and what's worse is that one of them attacked and bit my wife without any sort of provocation. The staff was apologetic but mediocre at best at handling the situation. Far from what you expect from an hotel of this standard, we're certainly never going back and would advise others the same.
Review 66:Beautiful hotel in a very nice setting. Pretty spectacular with the noise of the volcano in the background.
Review 67:stunning views delicious food Great bedrooms - unique and comfortable Fantastic staff - helpful, friendly and fun Gorgeous swimming pool Organic vegetables and food
Review 68:elegant, food is very good, lovely
Review 69:a unique hotel in the world
Review 70:I really like this place
Review 71:Beautiful environment, helpful staff, excellent cuisine, and great beds.
Review 72:Possibly a better breakfast / breads
Review 73:A unique hotel and setting stunning room and authentic Italian buildings
Review 74:No comfortable chairs in the extensive grounds only sun-loungers by the pool.
Review 75:Setting. Friendly staff.
Review 76:Value for money not great - extras rather pricey (food, drinks, services)
Review 77:Lovely staff and great location
Review 78:Service is excellent especially Sara who was very helpful to us
Review 79:There are wonderful gardens around the hotel: vineyards, fruit trees etc. And we loved the kitchen in the restaurant
Review 80:No room service. By email only and the system doesn't work.
Review 81:Food
Review 82:Very helpful and pro active staff. Nice interior design.
Review 83:Wonderful evening meals using produce from the local area.
Review 84:The price at least in August is quite high, but the property is also very partcular
Review 85:it is a very confortable and quiet place, the food is very special
Review 86:The meals and location were amazing! The staff were accomadating and professional.
Review 87:Peace and quiet...Charming!
Review 88:Dinner is slightly overpriced but food is great
Review 89:amazing hotel with beautiful view on the Etna great staff great food
Review 90:Too expensive for what you get.
Review 91:The location is beautiful and well situated. The cottages are tasteful.
Review 92:That I had to cut short my stay!
Review 93:Great location. Breakfast setting under the trees with a cool summer breeze blowing..
Review 94:Nothing!
Review 95:Pretty setting, excellent service and food.
Review 96:Hard to find
Review 97:The style: rural glamour
Review 98:Prices of drinks and food were very high and it would have been nice to have a choice cheaper options.
Review 99:Breakfast was very good
Review 100:Beautiful, stunning, amazing place - didn't have long enough there!
Review 101:The massage by the pool, the walk through the vineyard, the fantastic dinners....what not to love?
Review 102:Air conditioning was too weak and wifi was come and go.
Review 103:Site, staff a,enmities.
Review 104:nothing.
Review 105:The food - unbelievable
Review 106:Beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, Etna and the sea.
Review 107:The room was very sparsely furnished and did not reflect its deluxe status
Review 108:The setting is beautiful although in a rather unattractive area
Review 109:Something different, a beautiful setting and friendly / helpful staff. Great food and excellent breakfasts.
Review 110:Stunning location. Excellent quality.
Review 111:nothing
Review 112:location views service excellent food & wine, knowledgeable staff friendly chef quiet and relaxing
Review 113:Beautifully rooms (furniture, artwork), the dinners were great, loved the "home-grown" produce, olive oil etc
Review 114:Wi-Fi didn't work, never.
Review 115:Everything was perfect, the remote quiet location, fabulous views, discrete, charming and helpful owners and staff. Delicious healthy breakfasts. A place for discerning travellers for whom no TV is real luxury.
Review 116:trully amazing place, designed with attention to detail, beautiful views from the swimming pool, vast area to have a walk around organic garden, vineyard. Just loved organic al fresco breakfast area. Great place for both secret hideaway and starting spot to explore Etna and Taormina cost.
Review 117:- They didn't change the lunch menu for the entire week we were there and with only two choices of pasta that got a bit boring. - For dinner there was only a set menu for 45 EUR (excl drinks). - Would not recommend to stay in the suite further away from the hotel, it's quite a walk and you actually need to go outside of the hotel grounds and based on the pictures some of the "normal" rooms actually seemed nicer (all though the suite is bigger). - Would definitely recommend to have a car, there is nothing really interesting within walking distance.
Review 118:- Great staff (super friendly and service-minded). - Beautiful place (very stylish). - Guido knows a lot about wine, food and the region. - Wifi all over the hotel (including the pool area).
Review 119:The attention to detail was amazing. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. The country setting was lovely. The only problems we had were returning at the end of a days outing in the car as the GPS did not pick up all the small roads. A very detailed map is important to have. As well there are one way streets in the nearby towns so you don't always follow the same routes leaving the hotel and returning to it.
Review 120:The reality that we had to leave...
Review 121:Everything about our stay was ideal and perfect. We absolutely loved thehospitality that Guido and Ada provided, as well as their entire team. The beautifully decorated rooms in such a stunning setting, togetherwith incredible food and wine, plus all the special little touches (suchas fresh flowers in the room and even a chocolate bunny on Easter!) weredone in such great taste and thoughtfulness. The fruit and vegetablesgrown on site were amazing to enjoy for breakfast (especially the freshblood orange juice!), along with the local seafood and meat prepared fordinner. A huge highlight was Guido's impressive knowledge of thelocal wine. If you feel like you want to leave this heavenly spot,Taormina is a great day trip less than 40 minutes' drive away. Can't wait to return!
Review 122:We thought Antonio was very helpful and friendly.
