Reviews for Matsunoki-tei
Review 1:On booking.com it states the inn takes credit card, while in fact it's cash only. Luckily there is a 7-11 store nearby.
Review 2:The owner is very nice. He came to collect us from Hakuba train station and drove us to the next ski location when we checked out. Meal plan costs 3500 Yen per night per person is very good value for money. It includes a traditional Japanese hot pot dinner and Japanese or Western breakfast. The ski field is only 2 minutes walk from the inn.
Review 3:Everything that makes this place great, could also be a negative! Don't trust booking.com in terms of getting to the Ryokan! If you are on a train you MUST get off at Hakuba Station! Catch a cab if you can (we struggled during a big dump of snow and it cost $45 … $35 and regular when the roads are good). There are no services from the other stations! CASH, CASH, CASH! There are NO ATMs nearby - load up with your Yen as the only payment option is cash. Don't expect to party in Tsugaike-Kogan! There is minimal night life … snow/onsen/dinner/bed - repeat daily! The ladies onsen, was definitely not as nice as the mens (pictured). This place IS A RYOKAN … not a hotel! BUT, well worth the stay for the amazing snow.
Review 4:After settling in to Matunoki-tei, the experience was fantastic. The service from the staff went beyond expectation, from the complimentary breakfast, to the individualised western dinner preparation (after we were a bit down from 30 days travelling), to the lift to the remote station to make our train. The mens onsen was comfortable and food delicious! The location for access to the slopes is brilliant as are the facilities for ski/board storage. Free WiFi was a bonus and helped us arrange a few different things. A truly Japanese experience away from western influence. We were skeptical at first, but had an absolute blast while we were here. PLEASE NOTE … the things I didn't like are more of a guide than a reason to not stay here. Knowing more about the Ryokan, location and quality of the snow NOW, would definitely have me return in future.
Review 5:There is no really comfortable social area to hangout and meet other guests in the evenings. In the dining room you have to sit on the floor and in the room with the couches and the fire, the room is cold without the fire on but if you do have the fire then the room completely fills with smoke which hurts you eyes!
Review 6:From the moment we arrived we were treated with the highest level of hospitality and really felt like the staff were trying to make this the best stay ever. The food was absolutely delicious and we got to try and wide range of amazing Japanese meals prepared specially by their highly experienced chef. The Tsugaike Ski Area is a fantastic area to be around Japanese people and escape the very western vibe of resorts like Happo. The ski slope is about a 1 minute walk from the hotel entrance so location could not be better. Really enjoyed our stay and thought the accommodation was fantastic value for money, highly recommend to other people!
Review 7:Hotel owner is very friendly and very helpfull.

Review 9:Very friendly staff, large japanese style room. Indoor hot bath.
Review 10:Not able to use credit card to pay
Review 11:Food was excellent; traditional Japanese, varied and very good quality.
