Reviews for Hotel Leon D'Oro

Review 1:Lake Orta is an amazing location. The hotel has an excellent location with a view to St Juian Island. Room appeared recently renovated. We had a feeling of travelling back in time, nice. It was off season and the large hotel was almost empty. The small town have some lovely winebars

Review 2:The only small negative was that our bed was two singles put together. Which would have been fine if it hadn't have been a hard floor that the bed slid on a little.

Review 3:Great hotel, fantastic location, friendly and helpful staff. Lovely room that lead out onto the veranda which overlooked the lake. Stunning.

Review 4:The restaurant was ok, but nothing special. We found better food at other places in town. The service was not fabulous either, as we had what appeared to be one of the owners, however she spoke no english and we ended up with different drinks from what we ordered.

Review 5:Loved the hotel, it was cute and had a fabulous location. It wasn't fancy but suited our needs just fine

Review 6:We had a very small room with no view. It was very quiet.

Review 7:Wonderful location -- could swim in lake from back of hotel, is on the main piazza and adjacent to ferry landing. Breakfasts were good, came to love the family that owns and manages the hotel -- all and all, an authentic and comfortable place.

Review 8:'Compact' room but fine for a couple.

Review 9:Spotless room. Fantastic location - lovely breakfast overlooking the lake. Reception staff spoke English. Minutes from the church.

Review 10:This hotel was ideal in terms of its location and warm, friendly and homely atmosphere. I found all the staff very helpful and friendly and there was a real sense of family pride in the running of the hotel. Everybody, especially the family members worked extremely hard in making it a memorable stay.

Review 11:The outside spaces need decent furniture and totally revamping, as a result the terraces are virtually unusable. The communal area's are overly fussy with frills, plants and needless over crowded seating arrangements, especially on the stairs and reception area. The breakfast area has very uncomfortable seats, you can't sit for long enjoying the beautiful view. The rooms are very old fashioned with minimal space and the blanket and bed cover need renewing. The hotel just needs de cluttering and some money spent in the rest area's this would make it a desirable destination rather than one that gives you a headache because of all of the fussy trivia.

Review 12:The location is superb, probably the best location around the lake. The place was immaculate. The younger receptionist was above and beyond helpful. The breakfast is adequate and covers everything you would want to eat. The tables were cleared very quickly and you get a choice of coffee types. Overall the place should be recommended but travellers need to know that you cannot hang out in the room as it is small with no redeeming features but is immaculate and good value for money...

Review 13:very poor air conditioning- almost as if it did not exist-made sleeping very difficult

Review 14:friendly staff, great breakfast and restaurant, dock allowing us to go swimming (it was very hot when we were there so this was a great way to cool off in the late afternooon)

Review 15:The hotel is quite difficult to get to by car, the multi story car park at the top of the hill is €10 a day. The bed matress was quite hard. The paid for WiFi only worked in the lobby. we paid for an air conditioned room however were told that they don't switch it on until June so no air con. On top of the city tax that's mentioned when booking there's an additional charge of a couple of Euro that the hotel puts on the bill per person that's not mentioned anywhere.

Review 16:The hotel was right on the square with all the restaurants n shuttle Boats, we didn't have to walk far. The hotel is beautiful, the breakfast was lovely, some of the staff refused to speak English which I found quite entertaining. The coffee is fabulous. They offer discounts in the restaurant for hotel guests. The room balconys are shared but have wonderful views And the showers in the room we're brilliant.

Review 17:Old fashioned in all senses, open the room door and fall in or better mind the step, TV from XIX century, furniture a few centuries older, screen smaller than my cellphone, few TV channels, Wi-Fi in reception only (paid for). Breakfast is mostly pre-packaged staff one would expect at Euro30 a night hotels. Stale coffee. Etc. Etc. Etc. Avoid.

Review 18:Location and the helpful young lady receptionist.

Review 19:Leon d'Oro is within easy walking distance of most of the best restaurants in Orta San Giulio. The hotel is immaculately furnished. Above all, the owners' motivation is unbelievable - they work day and night to maintain the hotel at the highest quality level.

Review 20:WiFi only worked in the lobby and they wanted you to pay 1 euro for it.

Review 21:Fabulous location. Good food. Generous breakfast included. Recently renovated and clean.

Review 22:The desk assisted with the luggage but be prepared to handle it yourself. The elevator makes it a minor issue. More precise instructions sent ahead on how to get to the hotel and then find parking would have been helpful

Review 23:Right on the lake and the town square in the middle of everything. The views of the lake from the ding room and terrace are superb. Rooms are graciously decorated as is the entire hotel

Review 24:We had a hard bed and only one hard pillow (not feathered) each. There is no shower curtain so water got all over the floor. We had a really hard time opening our door with the key.

Review 25:The location is excellent but had to walk there to and from the parking lot which was quite a long distance away. We enjoyed the beauty of the room and the hotel. The breakfast was quite adequate with a lovely view of the lake.

Review 26:First, the staff was impolite, particularly the woman at reception (Barbara?), who didn't even give a "buongiorno" in the morning. During breakfast, they would continuously argue with each other while we're eating. There were hairs on the floor of the room. The bathroom provided amenities for only one person even though there were two guests. Tacky gold decor. Bathtub in the room rather than in the bathroom. Cracks in the wall. Tiny old TV with 4:3 aspect ratio where the programming today is all 16:9. Double bed is two twins pushed together. We kept falling into the gap. Breakfast was mediocre at best. No choices. Rather than fresh juice, little juice boxes, or rather "beverage with a base of orange juice". Charging 2 euros for wi-fi, which is only available downstairs, just seems cheap. Just make it free. We're paying at least 100 euros a night anyway, what difference does 2 euros make? Thankfully, there's free wi-fi at the Venus restaurant across the piazza.

Review 27:Nice location, great view of the lake and island.

Review 28:Lousy reception with no help with luggage that has to be carried from distant parking. Inconvenient wifi - cumbersome logging with charge and only available in lobby. Room small (though clean and nice bathroom). Offhand service throughout (except for one young receptionist).

Review 29:Location (except for distant vehicle access).

Review 30:While the restaurant food was good, the only fault (a big one) is the two old lady owners (?) who loudly shouted at each other across the room throughout breakfast each morning, disrupting the peace and quiet. Dinner was good but the same ladies need to leave their staff to get on with their work and stop being obsessive and spoiling the atmosphere.

Review 31:Great room with fantastic view from the balcony. Very comfortable and very helpful reception staff. Wonderful location for a relaxing break.

Review 32:We found the owners of the Hotel very difficult to deal with and have heard the same from local people of the town

Review 33:The posiotion of the hotel was excelent

Review 34:The rooms are a bit small with few spaces to put things. We had to work out of our suitcases. There was an armoire for hanging clothes, but we could have used a small chest and a table.

Review 35:The terrace available for guests to use is lovely. The location of the hotel is terrific! At night it is so quiet which makes sleeping very easy. Food was quite good. Staff was very accommodating.

Review 36:Chilly matrons in the bar/dining area. Room was cleverly, but peculiarly pieced together in a very olde building. O.K. for one night.

Review 37:2d trip to the area -- gorgeous. Parking is crazy, it's good to be able-bodied. Barbara was delightful, couldn't have been more helpful. Location is very good. Breakfast was VERY good.

Review 38:the steps inside n the bedroom should have a rail or something breakfast choice no eggs no real lounge to sit around at night and encouraged to bed no desk after 9pm for late check ins

Review 39:the sunshine the quirky nature of the hotel

Review 40:The hotel is right in the centre of town although access is a bit precarious and limited to 15 minutes. Most of the staff are members of the owning family and it shows. They were very nice and always helpful. Food and wines are excellent in quality and choice. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Review 41:You have to be fit and able to climb the stairs between the second floor and the third floor as the lift stops at the second floor, also we had a junior suite which was in the attic, very nice and quirky, but every time we wanted anything from the wardrobe we had to be careful not to hit our head as the wardrobe was in the eves.

Review 42:Situated in such a pretty village, you can walk outside the hotel to a very attractive square with ice cream shops and restaurants,a market on a Wednesday, all beside a beautiful lake with an Island in the middle and lots of boats to ferry you to interesting places around the lake. The hotel restaurant was very good we ate on the terrace

Review 43:The location was great, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful and we dined in the hotel restaurant which was simply excellent. Highly recommended!

Review 44:Staff make you feel they are doing you a favor--and at a premium price. "Confort" room was high price and very small. Bath had jets that didn't work and hot water wasn't. They did allow us to use vacant room next door for bath, however. Asked for breakfast to go as we we were leaving before they opened and what they provided as a joke.

Review 45:Lago D'Orta is a gem! Hotel is a real throw-back but they have renovated, and magnificent views. Restaurant was excellent.

Review 46:Cheap plastic chairs on residents' terrace. Not allowed to have breakfast on the lakeside terrace of the dining room.

Review 47:Location. Building. Staff.

Review 48:Booked basic double no tea and coffee making facilities and bed too hard for my liking

Review 49:Excellent location, all staff excellent and very friendly, hotel extremely clean.Impression was of a very well run family hotel. If I return to Orta this would be my first choice hotel but with an upgraded room

Review 50:Terrace areas in need of maintenance, no umbrellas, cheap worn out furniture. Coffee poor.

Review 51:Stunning location. Views from room and terrace exceptional. Room clean and comfortable. Staff pleasant and helpful. Evening meal excellent. Fruit at breakfast, nice breads and home made jam.

Review 52:It's a lovely hotel but our room was right on the square and there was entertainment until late into the night so it was pretty noisy.

Review 53:The setting is wonderful, right on the lakeside.

Review 54:Terrible hairdryer! Poss bit overpriced but all hotels in village the same.

Review 55:Very clean.Great location iin village. Staff were really helpful. Good breakfast. Comfy beds. We had junior suite so large airy room with balcony. Good shower in bathroom. Couldn't fault our stay there.

Review 56:we stayed only one night. As one must park the car outside of the tiny place - one pays 10 Euro for day. ... No free Wi-fi

Review 57:wonderful breakfast. The reception young girl was very helpful and welcoming.

Review 58:Location, view, beautiful room with jacuzzi...

Review 59:A wonderful location! A super breakfast!

Review 60:The breakfast was lovely but missed eggs & tomatoes

Review 61:That it was a family run business

Review 62:Room was small, and this should be mentioned when booking on the site

Review 63:Superb location, great restaurant and superb service

Review 64:A bit dated.

Review 65:Great location, very friendly helpful staff. Wonderful terrace overlooking the lake. Access to lake via a few steps to swim in lake.

Review 66:Bed uncomfortable

Review 67:Location, friendly reception staff

Review 68:Breakfast and the service or lack of from the senior members of staff.

Review 69:Location fantastic Reception team very helpful

Review 70:Bedroom rather small. Bath in bedroom is rather odd and also takes so much usable space from the bedroom.

Review 71:Location and helpful staff

Review 72:The lady who owns the restaurant was very rude. Staff who served breakfast was impatient and unattentative.

Review 73:Nice location. Clean and comfortable room.

Review 74:Wonderful position in a marvellous, gem of town.

Review 75:Very dirty, staff very rude, breakfast was horrible, and not working internet.

Review 76:Location near other hotels and restaurants

Review 77:Too many mosquitoes on the terrace. Wifi should be included in the room price.

Review 78:The location and view. It was a very beautiful and magical setting.

Review 79:Paying for wifi and not great connectivity

Review 80:Great location outstanding staff

Review 81:Nothing bad.

Review 82:Staff, location, food. All excellent!

Review 83:To pay for wifi and use it only in restricted areas is ridiculous. The beds and pillows are very hard.

Review 84:Position

Review 85:The off site parking

Review 86:The location by the lake was lovely

Review 87:Staff and hard bed.

Review 88:Location

Review 89:The matriarchs need to stand aside and let the next generation bring the property into the 21st century.

Review 90:well located.

Review 91:The staff were very unwelcoming. They all looked in bad moods and we did not feel welcome. Very poor welcome.

Review 92:Food was excellent

Review 93:Nothing

Review 94:Position Cleanliness Decor Helpful staff

Review 95:Owning family not forthcoming and impersonal. Pity as location unbeatable.

Review 96:Leaving.

Review 97:Friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful peaceful location

Review 98:The furniture on the terrace needed a good clean - shame.

Review 99:Fabulous view from the terrace Clean and comfortable accommodation Good breakfast

Review 100:No guest laundry.

Review 101:The staff couldn't have been more helpful and the meals were fantastic.

Review 102:Bed was a little hard, but nothing that meant we couldn't sleep.

Review 103:Can not beat the location and helpful front desk.

Review 104:The pillows! Very hard

Review 105:Family run hotel with excellent restaurant. Staff very helpful.

Review 106:Difficulty of car access.

Review 107:The food. The hotel is on the the main piazza of the town. Easy to visit the town and the Isola island.

Review 108:Junior suite very comfortable with character. Great location in town.

Review 109:The setting with its frontline views of the lake and Isola San Guilio.

Review 110:Restaurant very good food for low price

Review 111:helpful staff marvelous location tasty breakfast

Review 112:Wifi only in the lobby. Wifi seulement à la réception.

Review 113:Everything; including the restaurant. Tout, y compris le restaurant.

Review 114:Quite pricy Very elaborate decor No balcony

Review 115:Location Breakfast Wifi Clean rooms Good shower Terrace to sit on Helpful staff" '

Review 116:The superior room was very small for the price we paid.

Review 117:Staff very helpful

Review 118:Hey guys, be sure to read the fine print about parking at the hotel....There is NO parking AT the Hotel! You can park for 15 minutes in front and unload luggage, but then drive car to parking lot on top of hill, and walk back, 25 minutes!! Charming hotel, square, etc, but watch the logistics, especially after a long flight from the states.....

Review 119:Location was excellent

Review 120:Parking - parking is a major problem. Yes, parking free of charge is available at a 'nearby location', circa 15 minute walk, but when you have suitcases and after a long drive, it is a problem. Underground parking, which was the preferred option, was 10 euro per 24 hour period: good or bad - you decide. Rooms were well priced, so it was ok, but something to watch out for. Definitely happy to stay here for 1, or even 2 nights. The village is quite small, but very pleasant.

Review 121:Hotel is absolute lovely. A wonderful 3 star. Room is spacious and has access via an outside corridor to the lake-facing sun-terrace. Downstairs restaurant is pretty special. Food was lovely - however, it was also by far the more expensive option in the village. Still, it was worth splashing out for. The views over the lake were stunning. The village is very old and well maintained - very nice to walk about for an evening.

Review 122:The front desk staff was bilingual and very helpful for our travel weary souls. The room was perfect for our first night in Italy and the restaurant staff was impeccable in service and food.

Review 123:This is a very old and stunningly pretty location but that means the rooms are a little compact and tv reception not good - English speakers are stuck with the news channel.

Review 124:The restaurant has the most brilliant chef. I've stayed at this hotel on several occasions and the food has always been outstanding.

Review 125:Did not appreciate the beers always being 1 - 2 cm below the "Plimsoll markings" on glass: shortchanged & beer not inexpensive!

Review 126:Fantastic weather: which made our 10 day stay even more enjoyable. Fantastic staff assistance in help us with our forays into neighborhood areas: inc Lake Majorre & Locarno via narrow gauge train

Review 127:This family run Hotel is a perfect place to stay on Lake Orta. The view across the water to the Island from the restaurant which is also the breakfast room is stunning. Staff very helpful and assisted with locating car parking. Room was spacious, comfortable with excellent bathroom facilities. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 128:nothing

Review 129:The hotel was lovely. Staff all very friendly. Sarah very welcoming and helpful and went out of her way to give us information about the surrounding area and places to visit. Food in the restaurant was excellent. Ideal location, excellent views across the lake and suite was beautiful.

Review 130:It is a bit of a hassle getting suitcases to and from the hotel as it is situated in a restricted zone. We chose to park up and walk in with our cases although you are allowed to drive in providing you can get your car down the very narrow roads and also you must tell reception your vehicle registration number or face a fine. It was our choice not to take our car in as it is large and would have been difficult, especially as the place is crammed full of pedestrians.

Review 131:Really loved the position of this hotel, right on the Lake edge with a stunning view of the Monastery across the water. We had dinner in the hotel one night and the quality of the food was very good.

Review 132:The rooms were not ones with a view of the lake, despite the fact that the hotel seemed almost empty. You would think that it would be good to promote the best of the hotel to encourage you to return. The Hotel appears to be run by one family of various generations. Friendly and helpful service is not one of their attributes. The younger employees tried their best in the circumstances

Review 133:Welcoming, capable, and flexible desk staff. Extremely clean. Perfect location. Delicious breakfast (fresh croissants and fruit) with amazing view. Dinner at restaurant was pretty good.
