Reviews for Oscars Hotel and Cafe Bar
Review 1:1st floor rooms. Even though staff offered to help with baggage, it was impossible to ask when they were busy with other customers in their dining room.
Review 2:Situated close to main streets and shopping.
Review 3:Upon checking out I paid our outstanding bill which i thought included mini bar purchases. However a day or so later I received a phone call and apparently they had not included a $3 bottle of water in the total I had paid, they then asked was it ok to put the $3 on my credit card! i was so surprised, I told them I had paid my bill when leaving but was told they forgot about the water until now......not really happy it was not my fault it was omitted from the bill i had paid.
Review 4:Very convenient location and parking available at the rear of the property. Staff were friendly and helpful. Despite the staff warning me that the function occurring down stairs may be a little loud, I slept well. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom very clean. I would stay here again.
Review 5:The room was a little too warm, even with the air-conditioner turned to cooler.
Review 6:The staff were friendly and very accommodating when we asked for a early check-in.
Review 7:Worn carpet on stairs to top floor
Review 8:Room faced onto courtyard, very quiet, window opened for fresh air, fabulous food, good wine list and friendly staff.
Review 9:Stayed on a Sat. Unfortunately there was a very loud function right below our room until midnight. Raised it with Mgt but could not be moved since the hotel was booked out. Generously they did not charge us for the overnight stay - not many would do that
Review 10:Nice hotel, comfortable, pleasant dinner, very central location
Review 11:Access to and from car park Check out - Staff on break sitting near the reception scrolling on phone. If you are on a break remove yourself from the reception area.
Review 12:Location
Review 13:Great place to stay. My daughters were participating in a calisthenics competition. I was able to leave the cat there during the day and was a short walk from the theatre. Dinner was lovely.
Review 14:We were relocated to a nearby apartment after we hear about the possibility of a noisy function at Oscars. Staff listened to our concerns and responded promptly.
Review 15:Excellent location, room and bathroom spotless. Staff very friendly and accommodation manager more than willing to accomodate our special requests.
Review 16:Small room, TV reception poor, access from parking at rear of hotel was difficult, lack of promotion of what the bar cafe offered.
Review 17:Great location, comfortable bed, good bathroom
Review 18:Was surprised the room was so small. Felt a little claustrophobic. More than a one night stay would have been a bit uncomfortable.
Review 19:Location of hotel, central to everything. Car parking available.
Review 20:If I had to be picky then I'd say that to close your room door caused a loud bang. The early risers were heard clearly, but that's me being picky.
Review 21:In city centre great food and beautiful accommodation.
Review 22:half empty shampoo etc - looked a bit mean
Review 23:large room with good facilities - some rooms much bigger than others. good cafe for lunch and breakfast with friendly and efficient staff
Review 24:Charming, well priced accommodation Welcoming touches such as lights and aircon on. Car parking convenience. Unexpected room service. Excellent choice of food at reasonable prices.
Review 25:Difficulty controlling the temperature in the room caused issues sleeping through the night. Door used by kitchen staff below in the early evening was noise when shutting. Coffee at breakfast was not great.
Review 26:Location great. Well appointed rooms.
Review 27:Not a bad experience, just a concern for the welfare of your female staff carrying heavy suitcases up (and down) stairs.
Review 28:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Review 29:Nothing.
Review 30:As a single woman traveller, I loved the central location and the dining & coffee facilities just down stairs. Also the free wi fi was excellent and meant I could get through all my work - thanks Oscars - I really enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend you to friends and colleagues.
Review 31:The only complaint I would have is that Sunday the hot water was slow to nil in the showers and wi fi did not work
Review 32:It was central for our purpose and easy to find.
Review 33:Room 12 had a strange noise from the air conditioner which kept me awake so I had to turn it off. There was also a noisy duct on the outside of the room. It was a rhythmic humm which I didn't have a problem with but my partner found it kept him awake.
Review 34:The location, staff friendliness, no smoking in the outdoor eating area, the beautiful old building.
Review 35:Our room overlooked rear courtyard. Could hear some traffic noise from trucks and traffic, so rooms at front would be noisier.
Review 36:Convenient location to walk to art gallery, shops and dining. All staff, from cleaner to receptionist, were helpful and cheery. Dining was creative and fresh. Room was quiet, large and comfortable.
Review 37:There was no soap/shampoo holder when taking a shower. No washing detergent and sponge to wash cutlery.
Review 38:The location was excellent close to everything and the room was comfortable.
Review 39:The reception staff were lovely, including someone lugging my heavy suitcase up those stairs. Beautiful hotel, very comfortable room, quiet. Breakfast in the bistro was also excellent.
Review 40:There was quite a bit of traffic noise from early in the morning so sleeping in was difficult - complimentary earplugs would have solved the problem.
Review 41:The room was spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was clean and modern
Review 42:Nothing. A warning if you have mobility issues, all accommodation is upstairs with no lift. Good idea to add a light to the parking area.
Review 43:Great location. Tasty dinners in the cafe downstairs. Good wifi and handy place to park.
Review 44:The room and facilities were very good but unfortunately the constant hum of the refridgerator would make me think twice about booking again.
Review 45:Location, service and having a very good restaurant & café made it worthwhile.
Review 46:NOISE. NOISE. NOISE. We stayed the Fri and Sat eve, there was functions on both nights in the function room right below our bedroom (room 7) going till 12pm. The whole room was shaking from the bass of the music.
Review 47:Great location; modern with big rooms; big bathroom with spa bath.
Review 48:The room looked creepy it didn't look like the photos, spider webs in the ceiling, the room was cold despite the heater, the bed was hard rock. Didn't feel like a nice place to stay. It was very small and everything fitted tightly. I have paid less for better places. Sorry but it's true.
Review 49:The shower had good flow and hot water, the staff was very helpful.
Review 50:The staff, from Amanda who booked us in to all the lovely young people in the restaurant. Our room, with its modern touches, but still retaining high ceilings and cornices from times gone by. The name was a draw card, we love dogs:-)
Review 51:The staff at Oscars are delightful, very attentive and helpful. We ate at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The food and service were excellent.
Review 52:The room was lovely. Great view, very comfortable. Tastefully decorated. Modern bathroom. Everyone was really friendly. Great restaurant. Lovely warm fireplace in the reception area. Great to sit and have a coffee.
Review 53:That the curtains didnt close all the way. But nothing to worry about.
Review 54:The staff made myself felt very welcome when I arrived. They went out of there way to help me. The room was clean and very comfortable. Had a great night sleep. Loved the shower. I would go back and stay there again.10 star from me.
Review 55:No space for personal items in bathroom or bedroom. No towel rack in bathroom. Not user-friendly. Noisy inefficient Air Con. Entry only through cafe/restaurant.
Review 56:Staff are very pleasant and helpful. Great bed.
Review 57:The pillows were too hard for me, so if you are fussy about your pillows, take your own
Review 58:The staff were fantastic and the room was lovely. A great atmosphere.
Review 59:Lack of communication between staff and general lack of interest and helpfulness by many staff members. The noise in the room - Heaters really need fixing so they don't sound like a plane taking off. Also lots of street noise. Room are not very dark either which can impact on sleep.
Review 60:Beautiful looking rooms Handy location Great Price
Review 61:I didn't like that there was no hand soap in the bathroom. I don't drink tea or coffee, so a hot chocolate option would have been nice to offer. The back entrance was not suitable, as you have to walk through tightly and disturb diners, plus hotel reception wasnt easily visible to find. There was also a dirty pillowcase on the bed
Review 62:The staff were great, both friendly and helpful. Breakfast was quick at a busy time and was tasty and big. The bed was very comfy
Review 63:Tea/ coffee facilities very squashy and no light, hard to see kettle. Drapes didn't meet in the middle and towel rail fell off when wet towel placed on it.
Review 64:Comfy bed, great shower system! Friendly staff and very clean facilities.
Review 65:It was quite noisy in the room I had due to the air conditioner and street noise. Apparently there are quieter rooms at the back of the property so if noise bothers you probably a good idea to request one of these.
Review 66:Room was beautifully set out with everything you need. It was also lovely to arrive to a warm room. The meals downstairs were good and the staff member on checkout was lovely. The room was well cleaned.
Review 67:the soap holder in the shower kept falling off the wall. I gave up trying to figure out how to operate the clock radio (just to turn the radio on!)
Review 68:Great location. Nicely appointed room. Attentive and friendly staff
Review 69:Oscar's was the perfect place to stay the night. Very central to everything. Walking distance to Her Majesty's Theatre and pretty much everything else. The staff were absolutely fantastic and extremely accommodating. Would definitely stay there again.
Review 70:We arrived late and had not eaten dinner. The staff were immediately on to helping us as the restaurant was closed. They offered a snack but we wanted something more substantial. After web browsing 'phoning around they eventually found us a restaurant that would stay open for us long enough for collection of a take away meal. All help with plates and cutlery etc when we got back with it at about 10.30pm.
Review 71:Would have liked to be informed about functions in Hotel. Instead of listening to the thumping of loud music coming into our room until 12.30 at night. After first night tried to book into Quest who had no vacancies
Review 72:Friendliness of staff, pillows and bed both comfortable. Plenty of towels and toiletries
Review 73:The first night we went to dinner in the dinning room we ordered a bottle of wine this was plonked on our table opened and wet, with 'you already ordered, good' and that was it. The food was delivered in a similar manner the food was mediocre at best, it was just off cold and it was barley enough to be called a main course I have had larger starters. The food was not value for money. the table was not set a waiter plonked cutlery and napkins on the table didn't even bother to place them apart. very poor experience.
Review 74:Very friendly and attentive hotel staff ie the front reception girl showed us to our room and was very helpful and friendly during out stay.
Review 75:The located centrally without being on the main street, the hotel was close to shops and theatres. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable, the bathroom more than adequate.
Review 76:Food was outstanding. Bed was just like home. Shower was terrific and the spa bath with TV was a great touch. Staff wonderful, will stay there again.
Review 77:No soap in ensuite.aircond had to be kept above 23 to stop dripping (hotel instruction). Shower head separated from flexible hose and fluttered around on floor of shower. Cheap towel rail separated under usage.
Review 78:Value
Review 79:A fabulous location and a gorgeously refurbished building. Our room was beautifully decorated. What impressed us the most were the friendly staff. Well done guys, we'll be back!
Review 80:The hotel looks very art deco from the outside and the room reflected this in a modern way. It had been beautifully renovated to complement the buildings charm while incorporating the new. The bed was very comfy.
Review 81:I liked that Oscar's was so central. It had a historic feel yet with modern amenities. The staff were friendly. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet.co
Review 82:We liked everything about staying at Oscars .Very Much .. except that the television didn't work properly which was a real nuisance because I was unwell and unable to venture out so I couldn't just lay back and watch T,V which is exactly what I wanted to do. For the price we paid I thought that was pretty bad,. Something should be done about the arial or whatever is wrong that causes the reception to cut out constantly.
Review 83:Asked a staff member to check theater event for us, he said would call us later with info, never did. Air cond not working properly.
Review 84:Hotel is in a good central location. Room was clean & tidy.
Review 85:The staff were friendly and the bed was super comfy. Everything was nice and clean and the service was good. We would definitely stay here again and recommend the stay to other people.
Review 86:The room we had was on the street-side & there was some traffic noise, especially as the doors onto the patio were not properly sealed. We could imagine that the room would be draughty in winter. Service in the cafe & at reception was a little slow.
Review 87:Location is very central & within minutes walking distance to all shops & restaurants. Sovereign Hill is an easy 8 minutes drive away. Staff were pleasant & the room was comfortable. Breakfast in the cafe was excellent. Parking available on site. Good wi-fi.
Review 88:Television and wifi not the greatest. Wifi kept dropping out. Used the Target wifi from across the road instead! Minibar not well stocked.
Review 89:Staff very pleasant, food lovely, bathroom and bedroom very comfortable and nicely updated in keeping with the beautiful Art Deco era building.
Review 90:The room was filled with the sound of everyone's plumbing, whether they were using the tap, shower or spa. The plumbing noise was amplified in the room. Very difficult to get a good nights sleep.
Review 91:The location was great, within walking distance from the city centre. Incredibly spacious room. Great shower!
Review 92:OMG awful bedding, artificial fibres to broil in that you cannot thermo regulate you body. Sweat city. We actually purchased our own feather follows after this stay, however to also purchase a woollen blanket or feather doona was........
Review 93:we were booked in at Oscars, however it was very hot and noisy. The wonderful staff moved us to serviced apartments they also manage close by. Quiet location, nice space and walking distance to the CBD
Review 94:My room was at the front of the hotel, and a delivery truck arrived every morning at 6am, to the department store opposite. Woke me every morning. Also, I heard the vacuum cleaned in the hotel at 5.30am x 2mornings. A bit early!!!!! Need some sound proofing.
Review 95:The staff made it a very personal experience. Very friendly and efficient. I liked the size of the hotel, and it's style
Review 96:This was my Husband's and mine 3rd stay at Oscar's Hotel and Cafe Bar. The first time the was great, just a little hiccup re information about entering the facility after midnight. Second also good. This, the 3rd stay will be our last!!!...when you book a facility, it includes room and SERVICE. Not a locked up, not one staff member to welcome us just a note on the front door saying"phone this number" when you arrive.(could easily have been ripped off by passers-by!) Ring the number, told to put in a "code" on the pad at the front door...did not work! ..."Oh! I am somewhere else and will be there in about 20 minutes!"...not good enough!, as we had to be at the theatre in (nearby) in 10 minutes. Then told..."someone was supposed to have contacted you before today..."!!! Forget it! Also, a nasty smell on the landing near our "tiny"(...had not had this broom-closet before!)room with a very dirty bed cushion and cobwebs in the bathroom! We are pretty tolerant people. But at the prices and our last experience...never again!
Review 97:Great location.
Review 98:Our deluxe room was situated over the kitchen and that led to some excessive noise. However, after speaking to the staff some changes were made to the tariff and it turned out that the noise was not as intrusive as it had first appeared.
Review 99:Wonderful restaurant for breakfast and coffees
Review 100:Was hard to find staff around the front desk.
Review 101:Right in the centre of town. Clean. Interesting art deco building with modern amenities. Great cafe. They gave me a free upgrade.
Review 102:Bed a little hard for me!
Review 103:Fantastic, in the middle of the city. Easy walk to shops, restaurants. Free parking behind a bonus. Friendly, welcoming staff.
Review 104:Oscar's is a fabulous hotel, the location is central and it's within walking distance of everything including the train station. The staff were so helpful, they helped me up and down with my luggage upon arrival and check out. They were all very friendly. Free wifi is fabulous, always great to have that.
Review 105:We stayed here's for one night. Staff were very friendly and there was free off street parking. The rooms had been recently refurbished and were very nice and comfortable, our room had a balcony as well which was great. It was noisy in our room as we were on the main road and compared with other properties we had stayed in during our holiday, I would say over priced, but we still had a nice stay.
Review 106:Had to enter and leave through dining area, didn't feel nice. The stairs a bit steep carrying luggage, the room a bit small and noisy from function downstairs. The room pleasant but too expensive for what it was
Review 107:Good location.Food great
Review 108:When walking from car park out the back carrying our bags we had to walk between tables and chairs with customer's every were, in the morning there was lots off people eating in restaurant and we found it hard to get pass some people . We found this very intimidating.
Review 109:The staff was excellent from the time we walked in the door until we left. We had diner and breakfast there and both meals were fantastic great value for money.
Review 110:the tabletops really are cracked and need a polish. the concierge desk is squashed by the dining tables. There is NO ROOM for one's own body and luggage - and when people are eating and talking loudly the initial experience of walking into Oscar's is quite jangling rather than being calm and welcoming. I felt like I was buying a ticket at a busy railway station, not being welcomed into a $200/night hotel.
Review 111:cleanliness, quality of fixtures, facilities, balcony, location.
Review 112:Only one night!
Review 113:Amazing spa suite. Most comfortable bed away from home. Close to centre of town. Visit Mitchell Harris Wine Bar around the corner... Freaking Awesome!!
Review 114:I liked everything about my stay, the staff were friendly and the service every efficent. The evening meal was one of the best I had ever eaten. Both the accomodation and food pricing was very reasonable, would love to stay again!
Review 115:Noise transmits through the hotel quite a lot - eg. other doors closing, these can be quite loud Off street parking area is small
Review 116:Good restaurant Very friendly staff
Review 117:Need to be aware this venue has regular functions. Functions finish about midnight and is all quiet after that but quite noisy during as some rooms are directly above function rooms
Review 118:Location right in town. Did not use the car the whole time I was there.
Review 119:Only fault was a lack of room in bathroom at vanity, a shelf on wall would be useful
Review 120:Classy hotel. Added bonus of Cafe & Bar. Able to have lunch and breakfast there. Food was good. Room was clean and had everything we needed
Review 121:I booked the spa room but I specifically requested the room pictured with the 'spa in the bedroom' and this was not acted upon unfortunately. Quite disappointing because this is the reason we booked to stay at this hotel. Also that neighbouring rooms dinner trays were still there in the hall in the morning at late checkout.
Review 122:Close walking distance to venues. Friendly staff.
Review 123:Google maps gave wrong address - got horribly lost! :) Rattling bathroomwindow on the windy night. No drawers/shelves to pack clothes on.
Review 124:Clean, modern bathroom. Large comfortable bed & cosy room. Welllocated in the town ~ able to walk to pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Review 125:Finding Oscars in the middle of Ballarat right down the road from the wedding venue seemed to good to be true. Awesome super helpful staff. Nice big room. Very satisfied.
Review 126:We liked everything
Review 127:The hotel was very warm and comfortable we liked the food we had at dinner time,so friendly the staff and management. No problems one of the best hotels we have stayed at.Value for money all round.
