Reviews for Chain Gate Hostel
Review 1:the roof was leaking water because of the heavy rain. bathrooms were unable to lock. we were unable to connect to wifi throughout 2 days.
Review 2:great location very close to western wall and the mosque. the owner was nice and kindly let us change our room to a double room due to the leaking roof.
Review 3:Location is the best, literally right next to the Al-Aqsa Mosque / Temple Mount Compound. I've come to Jerusalem three times and stayed here every time. It is very safe, and you are right next to a police station. The locals are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Review 4:Breakfast was not good... bread and old hummus.. it was dump, air-conditioning wasn't working properly. There was no network range.
Review 5:Very good location, in a heart of Jerusalem! In the old stone of Jerusalem.
Review 6:Fantastic location, wonderful building and great host! If you want to be in the centre of everything the Old City of Jerusalem is all about, this is it.
Review 7:It wasn't very sound prove. you can hear everyone in the hall way as well as in their own rooms. In the morning the owner wakes up very early and they talk loudly at 5am in the morning, so it's not good for late sleepers. Also they have transformed the original lounge to a 6 person room to get more money, in return, there is no lounge any more. You will have to sit in the hall way (1.5 M wide) to have your breakfast. Beds weren't very clean. They have quite a lot work to make it a more comfortable stay, but this hotel has a lot of potential.
Review 8:Good location if you want to stay in the heart of the old city. You will get to see many things happening apart from the tourist hours. 2 minutes walk from the western wall will allow you to visit it for many times. You are actually just 50M from the dome of stone, it's behind the walls so you can't see it.
Review 9:I'm traveling a lot and I really don't need anything luxury. A bed, bathroom.. That's it. I don't need more. But chain gate... No cleaning of the bathroom during my 4 days there. No doors for the toilet. Only a kind of plastic door which can't be closed. Smells very terrible inside the hostel. No helfp by the people there. Can speak nearly no English. They don't have maps of the city, can't tell you anything about public transportations and by the way cry unfriendly!!... Worst hostel I've ever been. NEVER AGAIN
Review 10:Nothing
Review 11:We have booked the accomodation including breakfast + as an extra for Genius members pick up service from the airport (included in the price offer). After an hour waiting for pick up (nobody came) we had to get to the hostel by ourselves. When finally get there, nobody was at the reception and we had to wait for about 30 min for the owner. When we asked him why nobody came to pick us up at the airport he had hundreds of excuses, thought that we stay in hostel for 1 night but we booked 3 nights + breakfast and next day we didn't get any breakfast. Long story short the owner isn't able to keep services that he offers. No lockers, hostel open 24/7. Don't leave your stuff if housekeeper is in your room.
Review 12:Great location
Review 13:Stuff was not friendly. He did not give me enough information on stay. Breakfast was too simple to serve guests. I did not have it after 2nd days.
Review 14:Room was maintained cleanly. It was interesting to stay in the old town and the building from old time.
Review 15:breakfast a bit poor, but for the price I paid I couldn't pretend that much
Review 16:good location, despite could be a bit scaring 'cause exactly at the border with Jerusalem East.
Review 17:The hostility at the Chain Gate (accessible to Muslims only, unless you are staying here) stressed out my wife and kids. This place is better for adventurers. The "breakfast" was meager, though the coffee was good.
Review 18:The experience of being in the very heart of Jerusalem was priceless. Host was very accommodating, and allowed delayed payment, since he required cash.
Review 19:There are actually 12beds in dorm, not 10beds! So it's pretty crowded. Breakfast is just ok if you don't expect too much! The hostel is actually located in arab area, people around are not very kind! If you Arab little boys is trying to talk to you,you really have to pay attention! I had bad experience once!
Review 20:Really fantastic location, only 1 min walk distance to western wall!
Review 21:The Chain Gate Hostel is located directly to the Western Wall thus you are staying in the heart of old Jerusalem. So if you want to get immersed into the life and culture of Jerusalem, if you are travelling low Budget and if you don't attach too much importance to high luxury I would really recommend to stay at the Chain Gate Hostel. I spent there two nights and I felt there really welcome!
Review 22:Excellent value! Excellent Location! Excellent service. The landlord's stories and advice were fabulous. Made me feel right at home. Easy walk to almost anywhere in the Old City of Jerusalem. You won't regret resting your head here for a night or two.
Review 23:May be not so easy to find, If you get lost - ask people - for Chain Gate and Western Wall. You should be ready that it is a hostel, so that the comfort and cleaness will be different if compare to hotel
Review 24:Good breakfast ( vegetables, humus, coffee), Friendly informal atmosphere, like at friends house, not like in a hotel. Lots of place to stay, when I came I could even choose the bed myself. Bathroom was always free - wasn't have to wait. The place is has good placement - 2 min to the Western Wall. It is also in Old City building and near the Mosk. What is very important for me - wi-fi has a fast connection that never losts and the stay is not expensive if compare to other places. The guests are different - from China, Finland, Canada and even Russia. I have meet the Russian friends here and we had a nice excursion in Old City together. We have enjoyed the time here.
Review 25:The owner was not very helpful. At the time of arrival there was noone in the reception and I could not access the room.
Review 26:Great location - as close as you get to the West Wall. Nice interior, clean, good AC.
Review 27:The owner was wired, he kept coming into the dorm All the time checking what you are doing, not repeacted ppl staying there, felt really uncomfortable my stay. It's very dirty in the toilet and shower, stay 5nights, didn't see they do any house keeping, small tiny kitchen not for shared actually, he didn't like when you cook. Breakfast was poor. No locker, No storage Room, No door locked, would worried your valum belongings if stay in dorm, anyone can come in, even others guest used the toilet in the dorm. Shower and toilet's door can't locked at all. There were 12beds in dorm, not 10 as it showed on the booking, very tiny space to put your own stuffs, even just passed by the beds was a bit difficult.
Review 28:Interesting location to stay in the old city in Jeruselam, just next to the Chain Gate, you could see the religiou conflicts actually happened around, and see how Isreali police how they treat ppl weirdly... and met sort of different religious ppl over the world come to see the holy place, very interesting!
Review 29:Could be a little bit more clean!!
Review 30:The location is perfect, you can easily go to any of the most tourist place by walking and through any gate take a bus to anywhere. The owner is helpful giving tips about transportation and place!
Review 31:There is not a staff member available when you need somthing eg An Iron. Bring an iron with you and your toiletries. The kitchen is not available for customers & kept in a poor condition. Toilets are mixed and have no door lock!
Review 32:The distance from Masjid Al-Aqsa is a 2 mins walk. The manager will try to meet your needs.
Review 33:The only problem was because the staff wasn't there most of the time. We did checkin just at the second night.
Review 34:It is a good place with a good localization.
Review 35:When I arrived it was Ramadan and the people from the reception were having their food after fasting. I had to wait for 15 min until someone did the check-in and told me where was my room. The room I booked was supposed to be a 10 bed dorm, however there were 12 beds.
Review 36:It's in the heart of the old city, right at the chain gate. This can be a good or bad thing.
Review 37:It was Ramadan so breakfast was help yourself from the fridge in a rather untidy kitchen, which turned out to be out of date hummus, cottage cheese and some frozen bread for the toaster. Fortunately there was jam but no milk in date. No window in the room which was a bit like a domed cell, but a comfortable bed in an Air conditioned room.
Review 38:Interesting location deep in the old city, enter at Jaffa Gate and keep going until you can go no further. As non muslims we were stopped a couple of times and only allowed to enter when we indicated we were going to the hostel. We were the only guests, should have opted for the dormitory. The price was reasonable given the location right next to chain gate but non muslims cannot enter by that way.
Review 39:The room was very basic, but comfortable, but the room was very dusty. My daughter sneezed from the dust all night. But the worst part was that part of the room, over the door, is open, so you can hear other conversations at night, and you also hear the Muslim prayer that started at 3:45 am, and lasted about 20 minutes. No way to sleep through that, as it is broadcasted over loudspeakers and you can hear it clearly.
Review 40:The location was great, once we were able to find it. It is right next to the Chain Gate, which is a small gate entering the Dome of the Rock, accessible only to Muslims, so I hadn't heard of it before.
Review 41:The location is right next to the Holy Sites. The place is clean and has all the things you need for your stay in the Old Ciry. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Review 42:Thanks for a great stay! Literally 100 meters from the Western Wall and Temple Mount, and it was a lot of fun walking through the Arab Shouk to return to the hostel in the evening. I'll be back!
Review 43:It is right next to the only-muslims entrance to Temple Mount. We were always asked where we are going by the armed guards that were positioned just before the hostel. We had trouble getting back to the hostel late at night as some muslims didn't let us pass (the guards before the hostel are not there during the night). The room was very damp the first night but then we asked the manager to open the window and that made it much better. We hardly saw the manager and he wasn't particularly helpful and welcoming. The breakfast is quite simple - cold pita bread (out of the fridge cold), hummus, nutella, spread cheese...
Review 44:The hostel is in the heart of the old city, right next to the Western Wall. The building is unique, it is a great experience to sleep there. Breakfast is included in the price. Free coffee and tea all the time.
Review 45:Even though we were within 50 feet of the Temple Mount we were deniedaccess to enter because we aren't Muslim. If you are Christian,Jewish or any other faith this is definitely not the place for you.Rooms were wet substandard to say the least.
Review 46:What I liked was the location until I actually arrived. Then I wasextremely disappointed. Located in the Muslim quarter that was extremelydirty. Me and my son did not feel safe at all.
Review 47:One night it was very noisy in middle of night. Breakfast typically served late after 8 pm.
Review 48:Centrally located in the old city. Reasonable facilities for the price range. Breakfast nice quality.
Review 49:VERY humid room with wet bed, bed cover and sheet. Sulky & unhelpful manager. The only paying method is cash. Poor breakfast. Just two toilets and two showers for many guests. Very small lounge.
Review 50:The location in the Old City and the wifi. The hostel is not accessible with car, so DO NOT bring big suitcases, because otherwise you have to carry them more than 500 meters!
Review 51:The hostel doesn't have any windows, so the good point is it's keeping cool, but it also gets quite damp. If you stay longer term, be careful to dry your clothes from time to time.
Review 52:The location is in the heart of the old city, just next to Chain Gate which opens to the mosque (although only for exiting if you're not muslim). The hostel is great, one lives in the walls that are centuries old.
Review 53:The room had no window yet openings. Therefore light and noise comes in easily. Elsewise basic button ok and in the heart of the Old city
Review 54:Location perfect
Review 55:Very hospitable friendly staff never refused anything we asked for Mr Hani is a top man location and facilities are perfect have booked the hostel again already
Review 56:Chain Gate was my home base as I went in and out of Jerusalem touring the country. The manager always store my luggage for extended periods of time and was very flexible with bookings (even during the holiday period). Unlike other hostels at this price point, the facilities are clean and well maintained, the wifi is reliable, and even breakfast is included. I can't recommend this hostel enough.
Review 57:upon arrival we were greeted like royalty we were made to feel at home straightaway mr Hanee was extremely helpful very good location all amenities are close by loved it will definately be coming back here again
Review 58:Filthy, damp bathrooms, bedding wasn't clean, no windows in dorms. Kitchen was smelly and the breakfast was mediocre. Wifi didn't work in the dorm, 12 people sleeping in one dirty room with only one feeble air-con, totally vile. Would never EVER go back. Staff were brusque and uninterested
Review 59:ok location, inside old city.
Review 60:Absolutely unique experience to stay in this ancient builidng, an easy two minute walk to the entrance to the West Wall. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast consisted of toasted pita bread, cheese, fresh fruit, preserve, humus, parsimmons, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Coffee and tea available all day long. The owner was friendly and helpful. We booked a private room for two, but got upgraded to a dorm room with a private bathroom.
Review 61:Its quite moisty and humid in the hostel. The washing machines were in the dorms. Not enough Bathrooms, not very clean. There is no room to sit relaxed and get to know other backpackers...
Review 62:Location Breakfast
Review 63:Location superb- literally on the doorstep of Dome of the rock and the Al aqsa mosque, there is no hotel closer to these sites. It is also a 1 minute walk from the western wall... Host was great and breakfast was simple but good- great choice of jams/spreads and warm bread and salad. Hostel is very clean and beautifully decorated. Great for backpackers!
Review 64:Door lock in the dorm bathroom is a bit faulty.
Review 65:Comfortable and homey accommodation with unbeatable price in a good location. The couple running the place are very nice too! Won't hesitate to stay again!
Review 66:The entrance to the bathroom is situated in the room with 12 (or so) beds so if you want to have a shower in the late night you will probably wake the sleeping people up.
Review 67:We've got exactly the accommodation as described in the websites (a room with double bed) - great location, wifi free, very kind and helpful people, clean and tidy room.
Review 68:only two toilets, and they didn't lock
Review 69:free Turkish coffee. hot high pressure shower comfy firm beds quiet convenient for Temple Mount and Western Wall
Review 70:1.It is clean 2. Showers have hot water all the times. 3. The hostel offers free towels, soap, and hair shampoo. 4.There is a hair dryer in each bathroom. Breakfast is great, it consists of two kinds of cheese, humos, corn flakes, three kinds of jam, chocolate mouse, salad, different kinds of fruits, cake and bread. All of that food is free Tea,coffee, and herbs are free and available 24 hours. The owner's son is the receptionist, his name is Hani or Hane as he writes it.He is kind, friendly, helpful, and generous, he likes to help tourists. The location is good. It is near all the historical sites. If I visit this country once again, I will stay in this hostel for sure.
Review 71:I booked the room sitting at the Jerusalem Bus Station and it was the cheapest place to stay at that time, so didn't really expected anything. However, when we got there, I realized that it was the best choice I could make. Location is great, in the very heart of the old city, 1 minute walking from all famous religious places. Room (double) was rather small, but it's more a benefit, so it was like a cave with stony walls and multicolor lighting. Shared bathroom was the cleanest shared place I've ever seen. It may sounds strange, since there are lots of people in the hostel, but it was very clean and not only in the bathroom but everywhere. There is a large kettle in the hall, so you can drink water/coffee/tea. The breakfast was included, it's not a buffet like in some large hotels, but you'll definitely find something to eat. Finally, the host and his wife are very nice and helpful. You may ask them where to go and how to get there. They also ordered a shared taxi to airport. If I visit the city one day, I'll definitely stay there again!
Review 72:Everything you need to have in Jerusalem: A very reasonable Bed in a Hostel run by a very kind arabic Family willing to help you in every issue in a forein country. Helped me a lot! Did not experienced that in the rest of Israel bevore. Many thanks for all.
Review 73:I am not sure there was hot water in the shower -- if there was, I didn't know how to make it work.
Review 74:We could not have asked for a better place to stay. It was close to EVERYTHING. The place was overall very clean, the WiFi worked well and the breakfast was simple, but good. Totally worth it for a short stay.
Review 75:Location is far from main gates, so is difficult to walk over there caring luggage. Vicinity is very poor and dirty. This Hostel is very small, dormitories mix females and males. They dont offer any safe place where keep our belongings. Not always Wi-Fi. The worse thing is the bad behaviour of the manager who dont speak proper english, is not respectful and treat unfairly. I dont recommend this place. There are many hostels in Old City, with better location, facilities and service.
Review 76:Nothing really except maybe the fact that it is a bit cold in the room (take a duvet and you will be fine) ;)
Review 77:-The staff -The location -The decoration -The breakfast which is included -Cheap
Review 78:Excellent small hostel to stay in oldtown Jerusalem, great location, stylish rooms with stone walls, simple but good breakfast and tea/coffee any time. Good talks with other travellers.
Review 79:Did not know exactly where the shuttle was leaving and was quite late in time (my own fault ;)) so this was a bit stressful - but doable :).
Review 80:Started my day with nice breakfast and headed over to Temple Mount. Lateron used the shuttle service to Ben Gurion Airport. Perfect location for the last short day in Jerusalem.
Review 81:Easy to find and in great place (near all the sights). I felt safe, and I had a really good time. Staff ware really nice, hospitable and generous. This hostel is one of the best I have ever been to. I would warmly recommend it to anyone.
Review 82:It was very nice to stay in Chain Gate Hostel. It is great place for travelers who wants to feel Jerusalem. If we come back, we will stay in this hostel again.
Review 83:Sometimes snoring roomates:)
Review 84:We had great time in jeruzalem thanks to thishostel. It is located right next to the Western wall so you are close to all jerusalems sights. Breakfast is rich and includes local food. Staff is friendly and always helpful. We felt like part of the family during staying here.
Review 85:Our stay was really authentic almost middle age experience in stone chambers without windows just next to the Dome of Rock. The family owning the hostel is incredibly sweet and welcoming. The hostel is cleaned two times a day.
Review 86:For me the best it was the closeness to the Western Wall, in an middle east decor place, treated with kindness. And everything in an inexpensive price!
Review 87:Super nice place, the owners are so nice and generous. Very good location and cool building made of stones. Fresh and clean every day. Good wifi and breakfast. Everything was good actually! Definitely recommended to everyone.
Review 88:Police often asked me that ''where are you going''to go to this hostel because of close location to Rock dome.Just next to this Holy place..
Review 89:Everything! Good Location,Wi-FI,Good Staff and Cleanness.Price......
Review 90:Nothing to speak of.
Review 91:Location is magic, owners are really nice, rooms cosy. It is a small place but overall atmosphere is so relaxed. It is in fact extension of western wall, expect interesting dreams at night.
Review 92:Hard to find it because locals spells street name in a different way and don't understand you when you ask them to show the way to street in the address.
Review 93:Location
Review 94:I was not aware that it takes 20mn walk on streets paved with boulders to get there (no alternative). So you may want to avoid big suitcase or hire a carrier... Very humid (no windows). The old town is quite a hectic place so it would be good to have a quiet place for the night. But this is a hostel, with many beds in the single dorm. No ventilation of the bathroom means that it feels unclean and that the dorm is filled with the vapor each time one takes a shower. Do it yourself breakfast in the small kitchen doesn t help you feel more in a hygienic place.
Review 95:Low price compared to the city s standards. Nice and helpful manager.
Review 96:Bit hard to get to/find. Also, no real common areas, so a bit cramped.
Review 97:It's in the Old City. Love the breakfast included. The guy there was very helpful / flexible.
When I had been staying in the dormitory of the room, there is so crazy blonde white woman working. She is the extreme Christian believers that denied the Buddhist. (she may also denied the Islam.) She makes very bad mood for me.
Very near from historical western wall. You can use the hot shower and its high water pressure. You can use the coin laundry. Free coffee and tea(But not so delicious) The Wifi is strong in the lobby.
Review 100:Very hard to find.it took us an hour from the Jaffa Gate to locate it. In a room with three people it was a bit stuffy and damp.
Review 101:As an historian and of Turkish background I could not have asked for a better place to stay. Built during the tkme of Suleyman the Magnificent the hostel had a very nice charm about it. Situated right next to the entrance of the Dome of the Rock enabled us to go in and out of there when ever we wanted. We got to know the Old City pretty well in a day. As an amatuer photographer I had the best four days there. I will definitely stay there again. 9/10
Review 102:We arrived quite late on our check-in date so rather than us wake the other people in the dorm room which we'd booked, we were given a private room for the night. This room was comfortable, the only downside being that our voices travelled so you could have no private conversations. The last two nights of our stay were spent in a dorm room of about 12 beds with four other travellers. With only one bathroom (one shower, one toilet) for this dorm, I could not imagine how it would have coped for a full-room - the noise from the toilet also travelled throughout the dorm room which could be quite uncomfortable. One night whilst we were staying there was a problem on Temple Mount, and as we were staying right next to the Muslim Entrance (Chain Gate) we heard the riots happen right outside our hostel - for about two hours rocks were being thrown at our hostel, people were shouting in Arabic outside and the hostel management were arguing heatedly with the rioters; this made it very uncomfortable and scary for us, and the management did not come to tell us what is was about or comfort us that we were safe - this was quite unsettling. Overall, the decor of the hostel was nice, walls made out of Old City stone, but privacy and communication could be improved.
Review 103:Mixed dormitory, with a highly religious lady who lives in the hostel
Review 104:Very clean rooms. Good WiFi. Cost was good considering the very good location, in the centre of the old city 2-3 min walk from the western wall. Very informative staff who could give times and locations of everything I asked.
Review 105:Cheapest price, so thats what you get. I had 1 priv. room, small but ok for me. I choose the hostel cause of location, mistake, jerusalem old city is not big, you find easaly everything by walking. Food is exp. in thr old city, so you have to walk outside for normal prices. Military police is agresiv and always stopp you on you way to hostel, and not in a friendly way... If u have only 1 day okay, you can see the city and you sleep nearby, if not, choose something outside the walls, you have more freedom.
Review 106:Bed was ok and clean, ac, and wifi in the public place strong, not in the room. In the middle of the city. 3 privat room and 1 dorm, 2 shower for all of us. Breakfast simple, bred and humus. Coffe and hot water/ tee all time avalaible. Personal friendly, not always there and not the best english.
Review 107:Staff not always available when you need them
Review 108:I stayed a few days at this place and i really enjoyed staying there.. Very friendly and helpfull people:)) i really recommend this place to others who want to be near everything in jerusalem! I say Yes to this place!
Review 109:Well, it is not the fault of the hotel or the staff ... The hostel/hotel is next to the "Dome of the Rock" and there were armed policemen stationed around the area. They asked you, questioned you all the time when you go out or come back, sometimes a bit annoying ...
Review 110:Location ... see also the comment in " what didn't you like " section.
Review 111:Given the troubled times at the moment in Jerusalem the hostel felt very safe. Not a lot of passing people as its at a dead end. Inside its amazing.
Review 112:We had a doubl room, without a window, looked like a prison room a bit. You could hear everything through the door, so if you want some privacy and good sleep forget about it.Kitchen very small and only a small table with 2 chairs for eating in the corridor (can't imagine a bigger number of guests there, there were only three of us then).Don't expect a reaI big breakfast.I guess for the price we paid it was acceptable...
Review 113:Now I think that the place gave me a real feeling of Jerusalem, but during our stay there it seemed frightening. The situation at the time was tense, so there was a lot of strange sounds of shooting at night. The presence of the police just outside the hostel could be an advantage to some point, but it felt strange...
Review 114:Be ready that the old city becomes empty after 7pm - so it's not easy to find a place to eat& drink nearby
Review 115:Location and interior of the hostel can really make your experience in Jerusalem more authentic
Review 116:If you need absolute privacy and noiseless room for sleep, this is probably not the best choice: There is about 15 cm gap between the bottom of the door and the floor and the only window is to the hostel's hall (can't really judge, since this is the only Jerusalem's hostel we visited).
Review 117:Perfect location. Truly amazing service given by a very helpful staff! Breakfasts were ok.
Review 118:Due to the temple gate there was a lot of noice from outside (soldiers started to talk loud from 6am
Review 119:Location was nice. Good cleaning and fairly good beds. An authentic interior!
Review 120:To find the Chain gate Hostel, you will have to go to the Western Wall area and ask for exact directions. You go into a Muslim area towards the Dome of the Rock and the only way they will let you through is if you say you are staying at the Chain Gate Hostel. Once you find your way there, it is an excellent place to stay.
Review 121:The Chain gate Hostel is the best Hostel I have been to in the Old City area. It is very clean, friendly, and right next to the main attractions of the area. Staff is very helpful.
Review 122:the small problem with wetness;
Review 123:the hostel is located in muslim quarter but about 100m from wailing wall (which is jewish quarter) and just 10m from Chain Gate to temple mount (this is gate only for muslims, the entry for turists is from wailing wall). There is also short walk (about 500m) to the first station of The Way of the Cross. So the location is super. The host is very helpfull and nice. There is cofee and tea to have every time you want. Because of the situtation there were not much tourists so we received the better room than we paid (with bathroom and for 4 people instead of 2). There was no problem with security checks as a person said. There are soldiers in all the city but they are discrete and do not interrupt (especially tourists). The hostel walls are made of rock giving the place a special vibration. There are no windows in rooms but there is aircondition. In the early morning you can hear singing from the mosque but for me is just the vibration of the place. Note that the basic economy room without bathroom is as small as it is shown on the picture (just big bed).
Review 124:- a little on the expensive side. - idf soldiers harassing you every time you walk down towards the Chain gate to get to the hostel. Things like -->What do you want? you're not allowed here! God forbid a white Muslim was going to visit al-aqsa.
Review 125:- the guy who ran the place was awesome. - breakfast was stark but delicious. - right next to bab al-silsil leading to the temple and al-aqsa mosque complex.
Review 126:Everytime you have to go to the hostel, you have to go through at least 3 security checks as the area is for muslims only.
Review 127:Comfortable, clean place to sleep and stay overnight
