Reviews for Palazzo Failla Hotel
Review 1:Palazzo Failla is an old family estate perched at the top of Modica. The estate is filled with beautiful antiques. Our room had a little terrace that was perfect to enjoy a glass of wine every evening. The staff went above and beyond to assist us with our daily trips to Scicli and Ragusa. We just loved walking the stairs down to the town of Modica - great exercise and very scenic! We are so glad we were able to spend 3 days at this charming hotel! Make sure you have dinner at their restaurant, Locanda del Colonello, one of our favorite restaurants in Sicily!!
Review 2:Beautiful hotel and rooms in a gorgeous historic building. Very helpful, friendly staff, including family members. Excellent location in historic Midica Antica.
Review 3:High-ceilinged rooms with original furniture and tiled floors in what was once an aristocratic home. Good hotel services, including valet parking (free but give a tip). Nothing sumptuous for breakfast but it’s up to the normal high Sicilian standard with yogurt, pastry, cereal, fruit, etc.
Review 4:towels were almost useless and were not changed when wet!
Review 5:Very nice large room Hotel with atmosphere Staff very helpful and polite The restaurant la Locanda del colonello is worth a trip to Modica in itself
Review 6:Staff was incredible, food was great, location very convenient. People were friendly and helpful. Modica is an old city & typically congested yet parking was available & staff took care of the car. The breakfast was included and was very good. On site cafe & restaurant on side street top notch. Best value we had of all the hotels we booked in Sicily.
Review 7:Hotel heaven for me. Beautiful palazzo beautifully furnished. Such helpful staff. Superb meal at hotel restaurant Locanda del Colonello. Would that all hotels were like this. Lovely breakfast.
Review 8:Nothing at all
Review 9:Comfortable room and great hospitality. Extremely welcoming and helpful staff. The hotel is well situated to use as a base for exploring Modica and nearby Ragusa.
Review 10:The Hotel is lovely and is staffed at every level by the most helpful people we have ever encountered when compared to stays in any other hotel large or small. They manage to anticipate your needs and to meet them beyond you expectations. All this without being obtrusive and with unfailing good humour and enthusiasm for delivering an exceptional experience for all of their guests. Parking a hire car is nightmare in Modica for a non resident. The hotel staff greet you and take your car for what amounts to valet parking and only park in payment sites or garages when a free place can not be found. A courtesy car takes you down and back from lower Modica if needed at reasonable times during the day and up to 8.00 p.m. in the evening. We like hotels in interesting buildings rather than chain type so we were delighted by our room which was the one featured on their website. Often a hotel in a palace or castle can be too formal or "stuffy" but not Palazzo Failla. Thank you for making our stay so delightful. Alan and Sue Harrison
Review 11:We stayed at Palazzo Failla for one night but wish we had reason to stay in Monica for longer. The hotel rooms are stunning. Full of original Baroque features and antique Italian furniture. The breakfast is excellent - lots of choice and good quality. We also ate in the hotel restaurant and it was the best meal we have had in Sicily. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We absolutely loved it and would recommend for anyone visiting Modica.
Review 12:wifi didn't work in our room, not a biggie. I would have like a coffee pot at the breakfast.
Review 13:Gorgeous palace with impeccable service! Beautiful antiques and decor and very clean. Very nice toiletries, smell fantastic!
Review 14:Make sure you book the proper room because not all of them are so beautiful as in the picture
Review 15:Beautiful old building and nice atmosphere. Breakfast was very good.
Review 16:Very minor, but the bathroom window opened onto the exhaust flu of a boiler which sporadically gave off nasty fumes. So we had to keep the window closed at all times.
Review 17:Staff were excellent, couldn't do enough to help. Even offered to park the car and retrieve it for us if we struggled to find a place locally. Fabulous building and location at the top of the town and across the road from a great wine bar.
Review 18:Hotel with great atmosphere which reflected the history of the town. Great location right at the top of the old town with a lively bar opposite and some very good restaurants within walking distance (keeping in mind the town is on a hill!). Staff very friendly and obliging.
Review 19:Palazzo Failla allows easy access to Modica, which is an architectural jewel worth visiting, and provides all that a traveller may desire: beautiful, spacious rooms, friendly but at the same time discreet staff, excellent breakfast. Their caffe and restaurant are worth visiting, both for the excellent service and the high quality of food and drinks.
Review 20:The hotel was very pleasant, we had a charming room in the original building with a small terrace which even had abundantly flowering plants. The staff were exceptionally helpful, from providing guidance on what to see, to arranging car parking and onward travel. Everything was done with a smile and enthusiasm. The hotel's own restaurant, Locanda del Colonnello, is superb... delicious food, excellent wine list, helpful staff and attractive inside and outside seating.
Review 21:Mattress was a little on the firm side for me. Bedroom (102) could be noisy in the evenings.
Review 22:Small and friendly hotel in Modica which is a great base to vebture out from on sightseeing trips.
Review 23:Was difficult to cool the room as the skylight had been shade off most of the day.
Review 24:Was very nice. Young girl was the granddaughter or the owner of this old home turned hotel. Some obvious changes have been made but was still very nice. Staff was pleasant.
Review 25:The bed was not very comfortable. Too hard.
Review 26:We very much enjoyed the attention we received from the staff. They answered all our questions and had everything arranged for us.
Review 27:Nothing not to like.
Review 28:This is an elegant family home run as a hotel. The rooms are traditional and personal. The service is warm and gracious. The restaurant is out of this world.
Review 29:There was absolutely nothing not to like!
Review 30:My wife and I stayed at the Palazzo Failla Hotel in April 2015. The hotel is in a great location and was very comfortable, but the outstanding thing was the service. It is family owned and operated and they are clearly proud of their property and their town, both of which are lovely. The younger people speak very good English and were able to provide great recommendations for restaurants and things to see.
Review 31:We arrived very late and very tired. Giulia greeted us and immediately put us at ease with her kindness and service. This historically grand hotel was the family residence for many generations and they treated us like we were family, as well. It was a five star experience in every way.
Review 32:Noise on the Saturday night, but Ok Sunday
Review 33:Unbelievable room but noisy at the weekend. Fairly comfortable bed (but it was antique) You need to go into town for a restaurant choice. 341 steps to town centre 12 minutes down 20 mins +Fitness test up. But recommended for the fit & hotel offers a car service to the centre at certain times (but didn't use)
Review 34:Finding the hotel was very difficult by car because of steep labyrinth of one way streets. Our room only had a sky light. Lift not working(it was a Sunday)
Review 35:Excellent breakfast.Helpful staff.
Review 36:Nothing.
Review 37:Everything. Old-timer style room but with all the model comfort; extremely friendly and helpful staff; great restaurant downstairs(we were not in the main building. Will definitely try rooms there next time).
Review 38:We traveled off season (March) and were really pleased we got to stay at this charming hotel. We were on our "baby moon" and the whole team did everything to make us feel really special. We arrived in our rental car and they kindly offered to move it to a safe place so we didnt have to worry about driving around Modica and finding somewhere. The room was beautifully decorated with traditional features and frescoes but had a modern bathroom and was very comfortable. Wifi worked well. Breakfast was excellent - juices, cereals, croissants, good coffee, fruit etc. We ate at the colonel restaurant associated with the hotel - was the best meal we had in Sicily. Fine, unpretentious dinning with subtle mixes of flavours. Sadly we didnt stay long enough to try the Gazza Ladra as well. We were really impressed how the whole team and the owner of the hotel are proud of this business and make a real effort to make you feel at home. We saw the passionate owner talking personally with the chefs, manning the reception desk and he even picked up our car for us from where they had kindly parked it. Hotel Palazzo Failla is really a wonder and a reason in itself to visit Modica. Sadly we didnt have so much luck with our accommodation in Ragusa. We will definitely be back and would definitely recommend Hotel Palazzo Failla to others.
Review 39:Not the most convenient place for a walk to Modica bassa. Website of hotel has 2 restaurants, but the 2star Michelin one is gone.
Review 40:Nice room, lots of space. Friendly people.
Review 41:Initial impression when led away from main hotel to their annex across the road was disappointment but the room was very spacious as was the bathroom.
Review 42:Charming staff. Fabulous room. Quiet and stylish. And what's more a wine bar on the corner with passionate owner and delicious wines
Review 43:The location is perfect and the hotel is simply lovely. The owners, Dr. & Mrs. Failla, and the front desk staff of Laura, Giulia, and Giorgio were all very friendly and helpful. I apologize if I left any staff names out ... just a big thank you to everyone there! Would definitely recommend and would definitely return to this hotel. Thank you.
Review 44:We didn't have any bad experience, everything in here is handled with care.
Review 45:This is a well located, family-owned hotel. The property was the house of grandma turned into a nice boutique hotel by the family. The granddaughter Julia was taking care of everything carefully. Private parking was useful. The ambiance of the hotel was welcoming and cosy with lots of antique furniture and local material use like terrazo floor tiles and wooden cladded ceilings. High ceilings (about 4,5 m) added so much value to the rooms that it cannot be tell from the pictures.
Review 46:Good location. Very helpful staff with good English. Good value at this time of the year. We booked on the day and managed to get a room in the annexe about twenty metres away. Beautiful room and bathroom. If you walk down the town they will drive you back up. Good breakfast. Highly recommended.
Review 47:Compared to the uncomfortable-as-hell Noto/Ragusa bus-ride (no luggage storage facility) the journey to Modica was such joy and privilege. A taxi from Ragusa would have cost me twenty five euros. The wonderfully considerate Giorgio, owner of Hotel Dell' Orologio, volunteered transportation in his private car at a concessional rate of twenty euros. It was to be a door-to-door delivery from the Dell' Orologio in Ragusa to Palazzo Failla in Modica and the offer was accepted with gratitude. Goodness does not merely exist, it abounds in Sicilia! Modica's most prestigious address, a supremely elegant Palazzo, formerly owned by the matriarch of the Failla family (the lady- God Bless her soul - had impeccable taste) is operated today by her heirs, in capacity of an excellently converted four star hotel. Son, Paolo Failla, daughter-in-law, the sweet tempered Concetta, granddaughter, the super- efficient Giulia and grandson, the affable Giorgio, jointly contribute towards running a show hallmarked with dignity and grace. Not an iota of pretension or arrogance mind you ... The check-in couldn't have been more convenient. The double room awaiting my arrival, well before its stipulated time, left me simply enchanted. Breathtaking old world grandeur ably conjugated with modern day functionality ... The attached bathroom deserves particular mention (the olive oil bath gel was so soothing) as does the uninterruptedly smooth WiFi. The breakfast items were attentively selected and I've yet to sample richer and better Cassata elsewhere. The dining offer at the Palazzo's restaurant La Gazza Ladra was a thoughtful little touch. At substantially reduced rates guests were treated to David Tamburini's Michelin starred cuisine. The hotel staff - Laura and Egi - exuded warmth, amiability and professionalism. I was deeply touched when Paolo offered to drive me to the bus stop for my onward connection to Catania ...
Review 48:I didn't realize that the room I had booked was what they call the attic. However, the room was very large, had a skylight and a roomy bathroom.
Review 49:The hotel is located right in the heart of the village. You walk to everything. Modica is unusal in that there is an upper Modica and a lower Modica. Going to the lower part is where most of the stores are and the candy stores that Modica is famous for. Going back up is quite stressful! The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast that came with the room was quite impressive. The hotel itself is very majestic.
Review 50:The room was a last minute booking so to be fair to the hotel I'm sure they have other, much nicer rooms. Ours was in the roof and very, very dark. Small veranda had no view other than air conditioning units. I would have happily paid more for a nicer room though because the staff and location were lovely.
Review 51:Family run business and they are all extremely helpful. Nice atmosphere, you can feel the history in the building. Family own the Trattoria across the street which is lovely, can't comment on the Michelin restaurant as we didn't dine there. Location was nice.
Review 52:The hospitality was excellent from when we arrived the staff were very attentive and helpful. The hotel was full of character and our room in the annex was complete with a full size jacuzzi. The restaurant Locanda served very good reasonably priced food and we had a really good three day break.
Review 53:Nothing
Review 54:From the moment we arrived we could not have been looked after better.Car parked for us,helpful advice, pleasant attentive staff, delicious food and most comfortable room in annexe.look forward to next visit.too bad it is a long way from Scotland
Review 55:Problems with inroom safe.Could not unlock when leaving to get passports out.Hard to sort on Sunday am when the reception speaks only Italian. We got there in the end.
Review 56:This room was huge and decorated with baroque style painted furniture. The bathrooms are modern and clean. We ate at the hotes restaurant across the road.It was the best meal of out Italian trip served in cellar like rooms ,modern and stylish .I wish we had longer.
Review 57:The bed is too hard. By day 4 it was too uncomfortable for us.
Review 58:I enjoyed this hotel. Nice sized rooms. Location good but school across the street so weekdays can be a bit noisy in the morning. Very good staff. Helpful. Nice breakfast
Review 59:We spent 5 days in Modica. That whole area is wonderful. But the family that runs the hotel is what makes the trip. With two restaurants that are excellent and their knowledge of the area, it is the prefect place to stay. You can get a real feel for Sicily staying at the Palazzo Failla.
Review 60:We arrived in the evening. The staff were very helpful, parked our car (parking in the upper town is not easy). They recommended good restaurants and places to visit. the breakfasts were excellent too. the room was spacious and luxurioudly decorated. We had a great time in Modica and a very comfortable stay at the hotel.
Review 61:Not a lot - even the Modica one way system wasn't too much of a problem for the sat nav.
Review 62:Very comfortable hotel with excellent decor and very relaxing ambience. Breakfasts were very good, and we had a superb meal in restaurant.
Review 63:Having to leave!
Review 64:The hotel is a lovely historic building in a very nice area of Modica, the staff are very friendly, helpful and professional. The hotel has 2 excellent restaurants including a Michelin starred one. There is another good restaurant 6/7 minutes walk away, a pie shop and a cake shop almost next door and a good wine bar and cleaners over the road. The hotel has a garage but in the 7 days I have stayed I have not had a problem parking. There is bar / cafe as part of the hotel and they serve a quality breakfast. Whilst I prefer the rooms in the main building the rooms over the road are quite luxurious. Modica is quite a special town with lots to see and do.
Review 65:Hotel is absolutely amazing: it is stoll run by the family who owns the palace and you can feel the personal touch and genuine hospitalityl the location in Modica can't be better: you have amazing enoteca around the corner not to mentioned Michelin starred restaurant inside the hotel otself (cant recommend it highly enough). The interior design is beautiful, real aristocratic experience. We also had one of the best hotel breakfasts there with the best canoli in the whole Sicily.
Review 66:A bit difficult to find up in the old town, a lot of traffic. However, owners were so helpful in guiding us in and out of town!
Review 67:Wonderful hotel with excellent dining and terrific staff. Beautiful large room with antique furniture.
Review 68:Small charge for car parking, but not prohibitive. Decor might not be to everyone's taste. Steep walk uphill back to hotel from town centre might trouble some, but free transfer offered.
Review 69:Large, clean and well equipped room. Friendly and helpful reception staff. Free wifi Michelin star restaurant in site Good base to explore Modica, but outside the busier centre
Review 70:The mattresses a little too firm for my taste.
Review 71:We loved the location at Modica Alta as it was away from all the noise, you can take the local free tourist bus up and down if you don't like walking. There is the best wine bar in the area across the road and a couple of restaurants. In regards to the hotel the balcony rooms are grand and beautifully decorated to style of the times. The family that run it are very helpful and proud that it was and still is there home.
Review 72:It was a bit disappointing to arrive late In the day and realize that almost all the restaurants and nightlife was down in Modica Bassa. We didn't 't have the energy to walk or drive down the hill again, so we stayed put for a quiet evening. Still nice, but my preference would have been to be in the lower part of the town.
Review 73:Everything but the location. The style, ambience, staff, hospitality--everything was top notch.
Review 74:The rooms in the main building are a bit noisy; no omelette at breakfast; fixed menu at Michelin restaurant (would be good to have daily offers). The waiters didn't show the bill in details, just the final amount. Several mistakes in different restaurants were noted in the bills which is a bit strange & disappointing
Review 75:Location is great; rooms are perfectly equipped; good breakfast; nice terrace for diner; personnel is polite & well trained
Review 76:nothing
Review 77:The family who own the hotel could not have been more friendly or helpful with recommendations of what to do where to go and what to see. We had a problem with our hire car and they came and collected us and were very concerned and helpful that we had a good outcome. The added bonus are the 2 excellent restaurants, we had fabulous food at both.
Review 78:Elegant and comfortable accommodations. Exceptional value. Felt like royalty every moment I was there. The restaurant was to die for: fabulous food and artistic presentations. Staff at hotel and restaurant couldn't do enough to make your experience wonderful. My highest recommendation for this venue!
Review 79:Lovely room, good breakfast, polite and friendly owners
Review 80:Beautiful older palace conversion. Very romantic and lovely room. Great location in Upper Modica. Staff very helpful, breakfast exceptional
Review 81:Decor
Review 82:Excellent service, very professional staffs and owner
Review 83:Very good atmosphere and helpful staff.
Review 84:Staff Including the owner were very nice. Beautiful hotel.
Review 85:Lovely family hotel! The service is amazing! Perfect location!
Review 86:Bed a shade firm but not a problem
Review 87:Staff very friendly and efficient, beautiful rooms and very reasonable prices.
Review 88:Helpfulness of the staff, and the tour of Modica they organised was brilliant
Review 89:Sta ff w ere wonderful - so helpful. Car available to take us to town and they even parked our car! Hotel itself is heaven .
Review 90:Highlight of our trip. Perfect Location and very charming hotel.
Review 91:Everything was perfect
Review 92:Friendly and helpful staff. Great location and parking outside the hotel.
Review 93:This is a family run hotel with pleasant personal service.
Review 94:Beautiful rooms, very helpful staff
Review 95:The great welcome and helpfulness of the staff
Review 96:Charming staff made our stay here pleasant but I would stay in Modica Bassa not Modica Alta if we were to return.
Review 97:The staff are lovely here - obliging, helpful, knowledgeable and charming. The bathrooms are good
Review 98:The Failla family, especially Julia. The location and services provided by all the staff. And, of course, the value.
Review 99:location and atmosphere of hotel; good parking opportunities; great breakfast
Review 100:Very friendly staff and option of Michelin star or simpler Slow Food restaurant.
Review 101:The family atmosphere
Review 102:Difficult to find and park, but the staff moved the vehicle in the morning
Review 103:The stunning fresco on the ceiling of the room
Review 104:Narrow and winding streets to drive to get there :)
Review 105:Atmosphere
Review 106:The room very nice , well furnished with a nice combination of colors... the bathroom ( room D113 ) really outstanding above the expectations.
Review 107:This was a wonderful hotel. Very well informed and helpful staff, great location, two excellent restaurants. I could not recommend it more highly!
Review 108:Nicely appointed room, associated restaurant La Locanda del Colonnello very good
