Reviews for Hotel Royal Palace

Review 1:Professional staff - odd that you have to squeeze past the wheelchair access ramp that occupies 90 percent of the stairs. Helpful staff - busy breakfast area - you have to ask for a proper coffee otherwise you get the 2nd rate coffee jugs. Easy access from train station - tin Messina everywhere I ate staff seemed grumpy to foreigners and nice to locals - interesting authentic Italian town - don't mention the m word ?

Review 2:No bad experience but our S Max was deemed too high to go into the hotel's underground car park. Local car park closed on Sundays but onstreet parking possible at a small price ( free on Sundays). However, hotel staff v helpful and got us sorted. Hotel had an air of slightly faded glory: Shiny but empty chrome holders for tissue box . But this is Messina...

Review 3:Proximity to Stromboli aliscafi ferry port

Review 4:We arrived in Messina on the train/ferry from mainland Italy and the hotel was only a short walk from the arrival pier. It had a welcoming feel and the staff gave us directions to an excellent local restaurant. We left next morning on the ferry to the Aeolian Islands.

Review 5:Pay for parking in garage which has a very uncomfortable steep ramp.

Review 6:Location is good. A varied selection and choices for breakfast. Helpful and efficient staff at the desk.

Review 7:N/a

Review 8:Hotel staff very courteous and helpful. Recommended a wonderful family run restaurant for dinner nearby, great food and friendly family. The breakfast at the hotel was was great: variety and quality of foods.

Review 9:This hotel turned out to be old and stale, and in contrast to the photos on the site. As you enter the hotel, you can just smell the stale air and we knew instantly that we made a mistake of choosing this hotel. The location was in really seedy and run-down part of the town. The side streets were dirty and messy and didn't feel safe to walk at night. If you have a car, there is a car park beneath the hotel, and the entrance is in the back of of the hotel. The steep incline (of at least 45 degrees) and very LOW ceiling to get into the car park, takes a bit of bravery to drive down and up. We were in Taormina for a couple of days earlier, so I was used to driving up and down steep inclines but I didn't expect the entrance to the car park to be this challenging. My little rental car Fiat 500 struggled to get out of the car park; at full throttle and 1st gear it couldn't drive up the ramp (with just me in the car). Had to roll back down and then drive up with speed to make it up the ramp. Also, there was no direct access to the hotel from the car park, so you had to walk up the steep ramp, walk around the block (past a pile of rubbish on the corner of the streets). My Sicilian friends looked in horror when I told them where we were staying and mentioned that I chose the worst hotel in Messina: they should know, they live there. And I couldn't agree more. I can't write about the breakfast because, frankly I can't recall what we had since obviously it must have been so unremarkable.

Review 10:Nothing.

Review 11:Bed was hard with 2 pillows. We asked for 2 beds and got 1.

Review 12:Breakfast was nice with a good amount of options. Close to the bus which brings you to the beach. Good restaurants nearby.

Review 13:Wifi not really all that strong in our room..had to go to foyer to make Skype call.....which was noisy

Review 14:Roomy suite, conveint location from the ferry, good breakfast and helpful staff

Review 15:Rooms are older style but clean.

Review 16:Staff were excellent and helpful. We had a mosquito problem in our room and they provided a quick and effective solution. Staff also recommended a great restaurant around the corner!

Review 17:Not bad experience but be careful, SATNAV will not take you to the correct address! The hotel is 500 m in the opposite direction! 10€ parking fee in a very tricky, low sealing (1.6m) underground garage

Review 18:Everything in moderation

Review 19:Hotel Royal Palace very convenient for train and sites at Messina. Breakfast fantastic, best we had in Italy (we stayed at 10 other accommodations). Room and bathroom very good. WFI excellent. Decor really interesting, beautiful Murano glass light fitting from the 60s or 70s. Staff helpful and friendly.

Review 20:The wifi signal was poor - perhaps because I was on the 6th floor.

Review 21:Location - friendliness of staff - comfort of room - breakfast, both service and content - especially the scrambled eggs!

Review 22:Nothing. I really like this hotel.

Review 23:Very comfortable and great breakfast. Location perfect for me, a train traveller. Internet was fast and easy to connect to, and they gave me free access again today, since I'm passing thru on my way to Catania, waiting for train. Typing this from the hotel lobby.

Review 24:Not so Royal. An old hotel which is very dated and tired. Disappointed we couldn't have a family in interconnecting rooms even though young man at desk slipped it was available, supervisor wasn't flexible

Review 25:Wifi was slow, requesting a password everyday however this is only a minor issue.

Review 26:Location was close to the railway station and tram znd bus services. Breakfast was included in our room which was very nice. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 27:the traffic and parking was among the worse i have ever seen, our hired vehicle was to high for the hotel underground car park,

Review 28:the hotel had everything that we required, and the staff were friendly an helpful, and the location was central for everything

Review 29:I thought that the lack of dining facilities for an evening meal was a minus for the hotel. The dining room itself is a bit of a hidden gem and should be promoted as a venue for fine dining.

Review 30:During our stay we had a personal problem involving my wife, we contacted the night staff and their assistance achieved a great outcome. The hotel in general was very good. It is located in a great position close to food outlets.

Review 31:First of all: it is a 4-star hotel. But all-in-all is not up the standards. There was no safe in the room. WiFi is available but it is so complicated to use that I had to give up my laptop. Why? You need a password and username for every single item (laptop, Smartphone, tablet), every day. And they don`t always work. I need very much to use my laptop. Breakfast is so-so (4-star?)

Review 32:Localization. Very near to the Duomo and the train station.

Review 33:There were no dining facilities available for an evening meal, which was a bit of a downer as it was raining during our stay. The other aspect is that the use of bathtubs, especially for okder people, can be a bit of a health hazard as the bottom of the baths can be quite sliipery and tbere were no grab handles to hold onto.

Review 34:The hotel was ideally located from the Railway Station which is ideal. The staff were very helpful, especially in helping over come what could have been an awkward situation. The dining facilities were great, the place had an ambience which has not been fully exploited as place to enjoy a quiet meal of an evening,

Review 35:-coffee at breakfast only by request -staff is not enough prepeard for tourist advice (we reached fortunately at the "spectacle"performed at the tower of the Dome, but it was too late to climb in the tower);even with the taxes for parking we had to "investigate" a lot

Review 36:-central location -close to ferry -parking available near hotel, on the street, some taxes are applicable -excellent breakfast with many kind of fruits and sweets

Review 37:According to north European standards this hotel is at the end of its lifetime.

Review 38:The location close to the train and bus station is good. For Sicilian standards the hotel is still fair, the floor and bed in the superiour room are quite new.

Review 39:Indifferent personal. Ostentatious interior but very poor and old. Bathroom is awful. There was no view from the window on a first floor.

Review 40:Breakfast is great.

Review 41:Normal rooms are very small. Worth mentioning. The upgraded ones much better.

Review 42:Very good quality for money. Nice staff and very flexibke. Excellent location.

Review 43:The bathroom´s ceiling was in bad old shape, metal plates that were full of rost, same with the sink and fittings.

Review 44:Room was ok, clean spacious staff friendly and competent as always, breakfast is a joy

Review 45:the underground parking lot is horror, very steep entrance and no direct connection to the hotel (and thats for 10€ extra), the bathroom was clean, but had some old broken elements and mould in corners, needs definitely renovation

Review 46:perfect location in the city of Messina, we just stayed for a night on our way to Palermo. easy to reach from the ferry, breakfast was good - in particular the cereal and fresh fruit section

Review 47:A 4 star hotel in a big city cannot have 30 years old furniture

Review 48:Noise, generally grubby and run down

Review 49:Not much

Review 50:Facilities are basic, but it is across the road from the station and very handy to the mini metro and the historic city.

Review 51:Our bedroom was very tired it needed updating. Walls paper thin.

Review 52:Good Location & a nice bar The bar staff were great

Review 53:the staff was very helpful. the breakfast was excellent

Review 54:Messina is most certainly not a city for a long stay.

Review 80:The staff, the breakfast and the parking.

Review 82:Location to train

Review 83:No double glazing so noise from street. Also could hear TV in next room. Cutlery and plates at breakfast not very ckean.

Review 84:The staff

Review 85:Handy to Station

Review 86:Fixtures and fittings a bit dated and more suitable as a business hotel

Review 96:Very central in Messina able to walk everywhere. Staff generally all speak good English and are very helpful. Very clean with massive rooms.

Review 97:Very dirty and broken down

Review 98:Nothing

Review 99:Friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast. Close to shops and railway station.

Review 100:Wifi went in an out

Review 101:Messina

Review 102:It's close to the station so you can get away easily.

Review 103:Within proximity of transport, tram, bus, station. Good value, staff helpful. This is great value; we stayed here on a visit, 4 years ago.

Review 104:wifi

Review 105:the shower plastic curtain was brown at the bottom and had mildew smell, which made the bathroom unappealing

Review 106:very clean sheets and room and bathroom

Review 107:Wifi was really bad, it was really slow and required some activation which expired too soon.

Review 108:Staff was really helpful. Hotel was clean

Review 109:Not so good clearness ...

Review 110:The breakfast .excellent!!!

Review 111:we could hear much of the outside noise

Review 112:Location - in the center; Staff - very professional and very nice; Huge room; Excellent breakfast

Review 113:Helpful receptionists

Review 114:Old rooms; need renovation Extremely slow internet

Review 115:Excellent location

Review 116:Rooms were really good. Parking was available under hotel Breakfast was fine. Location was excellent. Much better than other hotels in Sicily we stayed in. Overall, a good experience and good value for money

Review 117:Rooms were older style, could do with an update. Two single beds pushed together to make a double. One bed uncomfortable and could feel springs.

Review 118:Located close to train station. Easy walking distance to shops and monuments. Friendly staff. Good value for money, with good internet connection. Good variety for breakfast.

Review 119:Excellent location. Easy walk to port, train station and major sites. Rooms spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast buffet generous. Staff helpful. Hotel seems to cater to business clientele as you would expect in this city.

Review 120:On the day of arrival we had to sign a document and no one would tell us why we should do it or what does our signature mean / what the consequences will be. It was scary and discomforting. Also, asking for WiFi password every day is not very convenient.

Review 121:Most of the staff was very helpful or at least trying to help as much as they could, even the language was a barrier. Also, the breakfast is very good and even I could find something for me, being allergic to almost everything, including milk, gluten and fats.

The Fine Print
