Reviews for Le Chateau de Namur
Review 1:An automobile is required because of the location. While we had a car there was a problem parking in the town of Nemur.
Review 2:The chateau was located at the top of the hill surrounded by well kept grounds, with free parking. A good area for hiking, leisurely walks and bicycling. There is a cooking school attached to the hotel with good food but on Sundays they have a special brunch which is well worth the price, and reservations are required. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 3:A lovely hotel overlooking Namur. Helpful and friendly staff. Comfortable rooms and a very good restaurant with fine cuisine. Fantastic buffet breakfast.
Review 4:The bedrooms are very dated, but I understand they are keen to upgrade these as soon as possible. As it is a conference centre the reception area can lack atmosphere as the meeting rooms tend to have the best views. The dining room does have a nice ground floor setting though, which should have far reaching views when the leaves are down.
Review 5:The setting, building and grounds are spectacular. The staff were also exemplary. We ate in the formal restaurant every night which was marvellous value for the standard of food and wine. A special mention to the young trainees there learning their craft ,(always under watchful supervision), as it was only their second week and they coped well. We look forward to staying again.
Review 6:Great setting, room acceptable, good fabulous - gourmet meal in restaurant used as training for nearby hospitality and catering college Breakfast excellent.
Review 7:There were two small annoyances. Our room had two twin beds next to each other that kept moving around; the space in between kept widening. A single queen-sized bed would have been preferable. The heating unit in the bathroom was behind the bathroom mirror. This meant no fogging but also that the mirror became hot. We worried whether pressurized cans - shaving cream and hairspray - would be safe in front of the mirror.
Review 8:The hotel/restaurant - which is part of a hotel school - is located near the top of the Citadel in Namur in an exquisite park. This means many beautiful walks are available with both history and nature. The restaurant serves lovely food and it is clear that they strive to be more than just a hotel dining room. The rooms are large, very clean, and well-appointed. The coffee machine in the room was excellent. The bathroom was spacious and also well-appointed.
Review 9:There was an early morning meeting one morning and all the people attending were making a lot of noise from 6.30 to the time they went in. Unfortunately, the meeting room was next to bedrooms on the first floor.
Review 10:Beautiful property and situation. Staff friendly and food excellent. The room was large with lovely big, modern bathroom.
Review 11:the staff didn't bother to inform us about cycling tour and festivities occurring in the city during our stay when the restaurant is closed there is no possibility to get any snacks
Review 12:fabulous building, garden and setting. excellent restaurant
Review 13:We didn't have a car, so walking up the citadel at the end of the day could be tiring.
Review 14:Beautiful location at the top of the citadel. Very nice accommodations and the food at the hotel restaurant was excellent (but expensive).
Review 15:Breakfast: Very little choice. Quality and presentation below standard. After 2 days of having breakfast in the hotel, we went the rest of our stay to the city center. Dinner: Very little choice/no choice for vegeterians, but the chef did his best and what we got was of great quality; after one dinner in the hotel we went to the city center for our meals
Review 16:Location superb.
Review 17:The bedroom was large and extremely comfortable, the food was excellent, the staff although training were brilliant there attention to detail was superb. We would recommend this hotel and would have no hesitation to stay again.
Review 18:Absolutely no food available when we arrived at 9pm and the hotel is very far up from the town so no alternative eateries! Breakfast not in the price. One of the twin beds had a hard plastic lining fixed to the mattress not conducive to a good night's sleep! Would have been impossible to find the hotel in the dark without a SatNav as it is up remote pitch-dark lanes above the town and there were also lots of diversions up the hillside!
Review 19:Beautiful chateau and amazing gardens with labelled plants and herbs. Room and bathroom dated in style but it had all you needed! Lovely views from the window!
Review 20:The hotel is quite a way out of the town so we decided to eat in the restaurant. Whist the food was delicious, it was clearly fine dining and outrageously expensive, so unless you have budgeted to pay for a meal that costs twice as much as your room, pack a sandwich or venture into the town!
Review 21:Absolutely beautiful chateau set high up on a hill, with fabulous views over the town and surrounding countryside. Beautiful gardens for strolling around and just outside the grounds is a cafe/restaurant with great views. Our room was huge and luxurious but look out for the minibar prices!
Review 22:The television reception was poor considering it is a 4* hotel and unusually was not satellite. We thought the breakfast was a little expensive
Review 23:The hotel itself is very impressive located above the citadel overlooking the two rivers. The room and bathroom were spacious and well equipped.
Review 24:It was very difficult, despite the provided map, to reach the hotel. There are many easier reachable hotels. According to my information it was essential to book a table for the restaurant. I send two emails to do that before my arrival but I never got a reply nor was a table booked. More shocking - I ate twice in the restaurant in 4 nights during which the price for the same item increased by Euro 12!!! The staff generally speak very little English. My stay at this hotel was seriously disappointing!!
Review 25:The rose garden but unfortunately they were over their best.
Review 26:very worn hotel could do with an over hall seems to still be in the 70s carpets in hall ways worn and thread bear and rails around walls although clean the dusters had left black marks on the walls living at mo on its former glory i think and maybe they should drop prices to reflect this
Review 27:great to arrive at looking from outside its impressive
Review 28:When we arrived and looked at the building we thought ... WOW , is this a hotel? A majestic chateau, so clean and set in beautiful gardens, and the drive up past the Castillo was lovely. The bedroom was super, with patio doors onto balcony, overlooking the rose garden. Double sink in bathroom which was large and nicely decorated. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the trainee waiters in the dining room couldn't have helped us any more. A perfect place to stay.
Review 29:Very tired building on the inside, badly in need of maintenance. Ignored by the guy on reception when we arrived, and it went downhill from there. Is this a training school for young waiters ? The service was very poor from start to finish. When we checked out, the receptionist screwed up the charges for myself and friends. He told us to sort it all out between ourselves and walked away. If it was possible to give a negative score, this hotel would receive it.
Review 30:Nice building from the outside
Review 31:Our room was located by a noisy kitchen ventilation fan which was running all night Avoid room #111!
Review 32:Nice location and grounds. Friendly staff and clean, modern bathroom.
Review 33:The hotel is part of a college for chefs and hotel staff, and it feels a bit run-down. It's not as romantic as it looks in the pictures.
Review 34:Great building. Affordable.
Review 35:There was nothing not to like
Review 36:A stunning building, excellent staff, rooms, setting and food whichtogether deserve a higher rating than the one that is displayed inthe reception area. But do not expect me to ride up there on mybicycle again
Review 37:we booked so we could get a good rest from a loo ng drive from switzerland, wecould not book restaraunt as it was full {no problem as we ate ate bistro. on arriving back at hotel in the evening we were told the bar was not open as all staff were occupied with event in resteraunt. this was not acceptable to us, nobody had mentioned it when booking. we made it known we were unhappy and the receptionist then got us a drink from the bar. we felt uncomfortable with having to complain .
Review 38:location, quietness,view
Review 39:We had a drink every day in the late afternoon and the bar is unattended, staff had to be called by reception and they do not engage with the guests.
Review 40:Beautiful located hotel overlooking the town
Review 41:Finding the hotel was very difficult and would have being impossible without a satnav
Review 42:The room, environment and staff. Especially the receptionist. She made us fell very welcome and was very helpful. The history of the house grew on you.Sad to leave. Had wonderful dinner outside on the terrace.
Review 43:Weak Internet and excessively hot in the rooms with poor ventilation. Reception desk not very helpful. No laundry available.
Review 44:Excellent terrace and dining area, nice bathroom, big room with comfortable beds. Serving staff and meals very good.
Review 45:No air-con
Review 46:Fabulous building in beautiful parkland with lots of free parking. The staff are multi-lingual and friendly. The taxi ride costs about 15 euros and takes about 10 minutes.
Review 47:The position was remote from Namur.
Review 48:The staff were professional & most welcoming. The restaurant was first class & the breakfast was superior. The grounds are park quality. All prices are competitive.
Review 49:Over attentive waiting staff at meals. Rooms are starting to look tired.
Review 50:Spectacular quiet location, not easy to find and a long walk down to the town.
Review 51:Twin beds instead of proper double bed. Dinner was quite average.
Review 52:The location is awesome: right on the top of the hill, just walk (or drive) a couple of minutes — and you will have an excellent view on Namur. Staff is very helpful and nice, room is big and neat.
Review 53:Disappointed that evening dinner orders finished too early to enable me to try out the dining facility.
Review 54:The location of the hotel, gardens and the grand appearance of the building.
Review 55:The place is also used to host several meetings, and in the morning it was very noisy. Also, we were not informed of the road works on the access to the chateau.
Review 56:Historical place, gardens, spacious and comfortable room, near the citadel and only 5 minutes to the centre by car
Review 57:The magnificent views, the extensive gardens, the peacefulness. No wonder people get married here. It's like Dracula's castle, but Dracula has mellowed, and he doesn't overcharge.
Review 58:It would have been nice (and less costly) if our family of four could have stayed in one room - but options such as a cot weren't readily available online.
Review 59:The chateau was so beautiful! It was a lovely mix of elegant history and modern luxury, situated above the hustle and bustle of Namur near the rugged Citadel. We wished we could have stayed longer.
Review 60:There were many interesting trails through the park and Citidel, but the staff at the hotel did not seem to know about them.
Review 61:Beautiful setting on top of the town. Namur was a great city with plenty of interesting shopping.
Review 62:Whilst the decor is dated, the room was clean with a very large comfortable bed (we booked a suite). We ate a fantastic meal in the restaurant - we could not fault either the food and the service.
Review 63:coffee maker had water and condensation in reservoir perhaps from previous guest .. should be cleaned and dried out by room attendant, parking close to hotel entry can be sometimes problematic
Review 64:historic chateau away from the hustle and bustle of Namur core .. elevator .. view .. natural setting .. clean, bright, large bathroom
Review 65:The hotel needs some attention to details in certain spots (like wall or ceiling paintings). Other than that, we were completely satisfied.
Review 66:The location - view, the hotel's concept, the friendly staff, the facilities, the cleanliness. Coffee and tea in the room. We got the executive room and the bed was quite wide. Nice walks on the surroundings and quite close to the town with the car. We also liked the decoration for Christmas time. The breakfast was also nice and food at the restaurant.
Review 67:The rooms could do with a bit of renovation as they are getting a bit scruffy. The walk to town is only about 15mins down a steep path which may not suit some people.
Review 68:The building is very grand and was close to castle. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is free parking.
Review 69:Poor and unwelcoming bar service.
Review 70:Lovely room. Incredible location - the walk into town through the citadel is well worth doing although it's quite a trek.
Review 71:The location is a long walk from the town centre.
Review 72:Stylish hotel, situated on a commanding position above the city. The restaurant and staff, while some were evidently trainees, were very helpful and pleasant. The restaurant provided good food in a friendly atmosphere.
Review 73:The room and bathroom and carpet are a bit dated. But as mentioned, they were kept pretty nice and clean.
Review 74:It was just wonderful to be able to stay in such a beautiful and historic chateau. We had stayed at other castle before, and this rivals the best of them. The room and bathroom were a bit dated, but was kept in good condition and most importantly, clean. What we like the most was the amazing French cuisine at the restaurant. It was pricey, but reasonable for Belgium and for French cuisine. We had the set dinner, and I have to say it was exquisite, beautifully prepared, and everything was perfect. Even the tiniest of ingredients like a piece of walnut was baked to perfection with the right amount of sugar coating, the perfect level of searing, and served at perfect temperature. Later we found out it was a highly rated restaurant with locals coming just to dine there.
Review 75:Beds were not very comfortable with some sort of plastic underlay.
Review 76:Hotel was beautiful and in a stunning location. Good price, friendly staff and decent sized rooms with nice bathrooms.
Review 77:Food, although very well presented tasted of nothing really - duck liver pate gave the impression of being bought in, and my wife's lobster was frozen not fresh. Very expensive wine list. Evening meal value for money pretty second rate
Review 78:Room was v. comfortable, location nice.
Review 79:The hotel is located a few kilometers outside Namur, overlooking the town. The surroundings are very pretty with parklike grounds and nature trails abundant. The common areas and restaurant are a grade better than the rooms themselves
Review 80:Room was splendid, nice size, lovely view. Very comfortable. The restaurant is quite marvellous. I was with a friend who has a number of allergies and the waiters and staff went out of their way to conjure up a fantastic dish for her. Definitely stay there again
Review 81:1) Beds and pillows are too soft for my taste, a bit too worn.2) Rooms start to be old. But hey: for 90 EUROs, we do not expect to be hosted like a Lord in an old castle. Enjoy the charm of the old house and garden, but this is not Kempisky of course.
Review 82:1) The superb old house.2) Large room, nice bathroom. 3) Restaurant with inventive menu, good old style service. 4) Breakfast of great quality: salmon, bread and croissants were fresh and tasty, I prefer this to frozen beans and pancakes. 5) Location in a superb garden top of the hill, free parking.
Review 83:Location is far from the city, sound of my neighborhood in my room
Review 84:All everything, hotel is beautiful, facility is good, coffee machine, spacious beds and wifi in all areas
Review 85:Bath tub was not very cleaned, towels with spots, bad noise insolation with connecting room. Very loud voices late at night (after 23.00) woke us up.
Review 86:The nature and environment. Food and service at the restaurant (mostly students - but dedicated and conscientious).
Review 87:The service can be a bit hit and miss. I understand that this hotel is a venue for training staff, and this could be the reason. Service in the bar was quite slow ( especially given I was the only person there ) and at breakfast, I was again the only guest (most other guest were in an event and had breakfast elsewhere in the hotel ) the service was really too attentive! The room was very hot, which prevented me getting a good nights sleep.
Review 88:The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are modern and clean. There is a Nespresso machine in the room ( so much better than a kettle ! ) and a mini bar - useful as I arrived too late for dinner and the hotel is a long way from town, so there are no other local options. The reception staff were generally good anf helpful. The views are great as are the gardens around the hotel - it certainly has bags of character, and at the same sort of price as a boring chain hotel like an Ibis.
Review 89:twin - not double beds - no separate shower - slow internet - minor compared to vast positives
Review 90:Meal - service outstanding Meal - excellent Site - simply extraordinary
Review 91:Surprisingly expensive - 80€ for a solo traveller without breakfast for a B&B style accommodation. Rather thin walls. I was particularly intrigued by what sounded like some sort of furniture construction with the percussive addition of something sounding remarkably like saucepans in the corridor near my room at around 10 in the evening. Fortunately, I found it more amusing than irritating. There was also a crowd of toga-clad youth at the nearby amphitheatre practising a play which involved a large amount of screaming and enthusiastic murder (so far as I could tell): the hotel obviously couldn't be blamed for the play, and the youth went home by 11ish, so worth keeping in mind, but not really a problem. The following morning, the construction site at the hotel started noisy work, but it wasn't particularly bothersome until around 9a.m. when the noisier power tools started up. If you are happy with an overheated room, most of the noise won't bother you, as the windows are reasonably soundproof. I was suffocating in the heat and needed them open, unfortunately.
Review 92:Great location in pleasant grounds overlooking Namur and within walking distance of the Citadel. The few staff I encountered were polite and efficient. I didn't try the bar, so I can't comment on other travellers' comments regarding refusal to serve even when serving locals. No people appeared to be using the bar on the evening of my arrival, so perhaps it was closed in any case. As I didn't take breakfast, I'm not sure what that was like either. A comment about an extractor fan or generator has been made elsewhere, and there was certainly some sort of generator noise until at least 11 p.m. (I was on the top floor over the kitchens), but closing the window on that side ensured that the sound did not reach me. I therefore cannot say when/whether the noise stopped, but it was no problem. The bathroom was large and provided some useful items. Whilst the main bedroom was far too warm for me, I gather that most people prefer that. It was also quirky, being in the roof, which I liked. I can't quite imagine why it is a four star, but as I am used to B&Bs, it compared reasonably favourably, although it was not quite as comfortable or as well-priced as my most recent B&B stay in Belgium near Ieper. Even so, prices around Namur seem to be quite high, so it compares relatively well to the rest of the region. If you need something cheaper, go to Charleroi, which is not far away and has plenty of comfortable places to stay.
Review 93:- The lighting is quite poor, as a result the rooms are very dark and gloomy in the evening time; - Restaurant is quite small - just only few tables with a nice view, the rest are situated on non-comfortable areas; - Flies are landing on the food at the breakfast; - Haughty stuff; - Bear in mind, that not the all "executive" rooms have balcony like on the pictures at this web-site, some of these rooms have only the small window what makes the room even darker; - in our stay it was some noisy party downstairs till the midnight.
Review 94:- The hotel looks like a castle; - The location is far away from the city center, on the hill, not noisy. It was good for us as we arrived at the car, but it could be a problem for those who are without car.
Review 95:Old tea bag from previous guest in electric kettle, spare blanket bundled and not folded in closet, stained carpeting ... general impression of neglect
Review 96:The location very close to the Citadel
Review 97:Not the easiest place to find, Namur not the easiest place to navigate around.
Review 98:Great place to stay. Good value and excellent service. Second time this year we've stayed. The restaurant seemed pricey, but the quality and service was great.
Review 99:The fact that the only food available is the very sophisticated restaurant. Due to the location of the hotel which is distant from the centre of town, it would be good to have some simple food options available to order as room service. The kitchen is obviously well equipped so it could provide some simple options not only the fixed restaurant menu but these were not available.
Review 100:The location, the hotel, the rooms, the beds, he size of the rooms. Overall the staff are polite but not particularly attentive.
Review 101:A very nice atmosphere, in an excellent location, a very good restaurant with helpful staff and some local specialty beers, very relaxing, overlooks the city and river Meuse, has close by public transport for trips down into Namur.
Review 102:For my height (1.93 m) the beds don't work well.
Review 103:The restaurant for breakfast and dinner is outstanding. The staff and food quality is exceptional - as would be expected in Belgium. I liked the location above the Citadel and the walks down (and up) to the city center.
Review 104:The room was extremely hot over night the hotel did provide a fan but did not have air conditioning
Review 105:The Building was stunning and the restaurant was excellent. The hotel is also a training school so the staff were attentive but timid.
Review 106:some slightly dated and worn decoration and fittings. No tap water available in the restaurant (principle of buying water is flawed in my opinion)
Review 107:great character and great restaurant Contributed to an enjoyable short stay
Review 108:No private grounds. Is probably surviving as a conference centre rather than a hotel and is part of a hotel school which has both positive and negative attributes both from food and staff knowledge.
Review 109:spacious suite. Although lunch fully booked when we arrived they set up a special table to accommodate us. Sunday lunch buffet was superb and very popular with locals
Review 110:The recent refurbishment increased the comfort a little but totally removed the sense of being in a slightly faded chateau, which for us was the chief charm. The gourmet restaurant, apart from being a little pretentious, has always been quirky. This time (our third evening meal there), although every other table was asked if their meal was satisfactory, we were not and our one obviously inedible meal was whisked away without comment. Keeping one's wine too far to reach is fine if one doesn't end up having repeatedly to wave an empty glass at waiters for minutes at a time. For a restaurant which charges over 100e for a bottle of wine and one course for two this is distinctly poor.
Review 111:Interesting garden. Comfortable. Easy parking. The building itself.
Review 112:Further from the town than indicated on travel site. Very old, thin bathroom towels & no complimentary toiletries. Such a shame to find a wall soap dispenser in such a beautiful hotel. It doesn't make me think 'luxury'. Limited selection of tea/coffee. As with bathroom, doesn't make you feel special.
Review 113:Stunning building in a beautiful setting. Staff on reception very, very helpful.
Review 114:The hotel is conveniently located just a few minutes by car from the city centre. There is a free parking in front of the hotel (it is not big but you can easily find other space to park just outside the hotel gates). Our room was very spacious, clean and silent; the furniture and the bathroom were quite new.
Review 115:Decor is "college dorm-like", There are more "B" and "C" level students than "A". The fine dining food was not well executed and having dying flowers as centerpieces didn't help. The room decor was horrid, including lighting fixtures that didn't work and kept the room dim.
Review 116:The location, architecture and grounds were wonderful. The ambiance in the dining room was beautiful. The management staff know how to handle situations and were very gracious.
Review 117:Could use an update on general decoration like painting carpets wallpaper
Review 118:Location and ambiance, very nice chateau. Bathroom, bed coffee machine was good. Restaurant was excelent. I would go back to this hotel
Review 119:Service in restaurant very slow at night.
Review 120:Setting was lovely, food was good. Clean well appointed rooms. Easy access and parking fir free. Friendly helpful staff
Review 121:We were travelling from Italy to the uk and stopped for one night. Beautiful location for a much needed rest. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The room we had was spacious and comfortable. But the best part was the restaurant. The food was utterly delicious and the staff were very attentive. Quite expensive but the cost of the room and the quality outweighed this! Was so good we stopped on the way back three weeks later.
Review 122:A very snooty reception from the desk staff when we arrived on our bikes. Those of us who choose to cycle pay the same and deserve the same service. We were not impressed. Located at the top of a two mile long hill - not much fun at the end of a long day's cycling.
Review 123:A beautiful building and a decent breakfast.
Review 124:The rooms itself can use an update.
Review 125:The location was perfect. Beautiful surrounding. The castle looks amazing! By using breakfast you can see what great kitchen they have.
Review 126:Difficult to access without car. Away from city centre. Otherwise, nothing that we didnt like.
Review 127:Clean, comfortable, pretty castle and peaceful location. Good wifi. Very well-mannered and friendly hotel staff
Review 128:Nothing
Review 129:The Chateau is extremely clean with good, friendly service and an excellent restaurant. It is set in a lovely location within beautiful grounds.
Review 130:nothing??
Review 131:This hotel and location are first class evening dinner was very good and well presented staff very good. we will stay again. Mr & Mrs Parker
Review 132:Trainee waiters very keen but not flexible. We didn't need to be offered bread 7 times and would have preferred not to wait 40 minutes for a small plate of cheese.
Review 133:A lovely view from the terrace over the river and city. Pleasant gardens.
Review 134:Nothing.
Review 135:Our second visit to the Chateau. the building and gardens are lovely. The hotel is well away from busy roads so is very tranquil and is ideally situated for access to the Citadel-just a few minutes stroll from the gates. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a spacious and well-appointed bathroom. Excellent parking facilities and a short bus or taxi ride into the city-which is full of visitor attractions and a pedestrianised area in the old town which is full of decent restaurants, coffee shops etc.
Review 136:Meals in the restaurant were expensive and we found the hotel difficult to find. Even with GPS help it took us too long to find the hotel. More signs would be helpful.
Review 137:Our room and the general hotel facilities were good value. Everything, including the staff, very clean and correct. We had a pleasant and enjoyable short stay.
Review 138:Lovely building and grounds. Room very clean and comfortable-excellentbathroom facilities. Easy access to Namur Citadel-just outside thegates! Short bus or taxi ride into Namur.
The Fine Print
