Reviews for Riad Arous Chamel

Review 1:It was pretty cold and there's no heating in the room. Also it's not comfortable, that the bathroom it outside of the room, despite it's private for each room.

Review 2:Terrassa

Review 3:If you book the cheapest room you will probably get Blue room. If so, get ready for some inconvenience: the bathroom is not within the room. You do not share it, its all your but to use it you have to leave the room, walk some 7-8 stairs down to get there. Other rooms do have truly ensuite bathroom. It was noisy, too - not because of other guests but because of neighbours (?) whose house is adjacent to the riad

Review 4:Location. Breakfast served on the terrace overlooking the town and sea.

Review 5:The room is VERY small with no air conditioning. Each room has a very insecure door/lock system with wooden windows facing a courtyard. We were not expecting such an insecure location.

Review 6:Our host was helpful with info upon check in. The bar tensender was very helpful taking us to a restaurant for dinner. The hotrel is close to the harbour and casbah IF you can find your way there. Luckily we had help. It's s maze of streets and alley ways. Very traditional decorations. A street guide took us through the streets and coffee bars. His name was Richard and was very enigmatic and outgoing.

Review 7:The restaurant we were taken to was quite expensive given the quality and quantity of the food and I suspect it is a relative's restaurant.

Review 8:Location is ok if know the way to get there. Staff was helpful in checking in and led us to a restaurant for dinner given it was the eve of a major festival and shops and restaurants were shutting down. Breakfast was quite good.

Review 9:This riad is lovely: the decoration is stunning, the staff friendly and helpful (especially Bilal!), everything is extremely clean, and the breakfast is delicious. The terrace is the perfect place to unwind after a long day and offers a beautiful view of the surroundings; the location is perfect - right in the middle of the Medina. Overall a great experience.

Review 10:Riad's tend to be pleasant because of the courtyard but this one is well worn and has not been well maintained. Lighting was poor. It was not a wonderful experience. It was too expensive for what was delivered. The internet coverage was poor and it was off a lot of the time.

Review 11:Little. One wall in the room.

Review 12:The staff weren't great with English and weren't as hospitable as the other Riads we stayed at. The WiFi was only available down stairs. There was also no air-conditioning.

Review 13:The location was good and it was reasonably easy to find. The rooms were lovely and so were the bathrooms.

Review 14:It will always be tricky to locate the property at first , but this is all part of the medinas charm

Review 15:Staff where awesome , very helpful in any way they could be ! Would be happy to stay again ...and a big plus is the incredible views from the roof terrace ! Thanks again

Review 16:The first day we arrived they told us that the AC is damaged and will be repared the next day, we didn't sleep that night. The next day the tech. came after noon and spent abput 3 hrs and end with no result they didn't toke it sieriously the manager left the helpful worker belal was with us called them and asked them to change the room without charge. that was the only thing every thing else was perfect thank you all very much.

Review 17:The traditional style, the location near the souq, very clean.

Review 18:The hotel is very humid, specially the rooms on the ground floor. We had two rooms, one at the ground floor which had no air-conditioner and serious problem of ventilation and other one was on the first floor. Both rooms have problem with the bath. The drains are almost clogged up and when we took shower it really felt like walking into the jungle. The toilets are almost broken and you could not imagine how uncomfortable it was to ¨sit on¨ it. Finally we had to use the shared WC which was kind of better. The sockets in the bath were broken. Besides, those towels were really not clean enough. The staff at the riad, frankly speaking, is not professional. Sometimes they sped more time on mobile phone than attended us. During our travel in Morocco, we chose principally the old houses and always had great experience and that was why we selected this riad at Tanger for its attractive decoration of the house. However, the condition inside the rooms were so disappointing!

Review 19:Arrived after 7 hour drive and nobody there. Very hot, charged extra 20Euro for room with aircon even though we were the only guests. Arranged for early breakfast prior to ferry and nobody turned up! (Expect a refund)

Review 20:Authentic Riad in the old medina

Review 21:the rooftop is a great place to relax and have a view of the city, as well as having a fresh breakfast prepared for you, which was fantastic. the rooms are large and airy and the riad so quiet at night.

Review 22:The one thing that might be not that good was that the WIFI connection was not really that good or available in the room. But hey! Sometimes is good to get disconnected a bit from our digital lives right? The rooms can get a little bit humid, but they will provide an electric dehumidifier, so no biggy.

Review 23:The Riad Arous Chamel was a wonderful experience. As this was our first trip to Morocco, the people at the Riad were extremely kind to set up transport from the Airport to the Medina and then get us someone to guide us through the little streets until we found ourselves in the Riad. Since there were few guests staying during our time there, they upgraded our room, which I believe was super nice. The bed was comfy and overall the room and the hotel were quite clean. The rooms can get a little bit humid, but they will provide an electric dehumidifier, so no biggy. You will find out that breakfast is not the most important thing in Morocco, but the guys at Arous Chamel will always set up something awesome, fresh pastries, fresh fruit and mint tea, definitely a good idea if you are about to walk around like crazy. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

Review 24:We ate breakfast at the terrace, but wind was too strong, we felt cold and uncomfortable, we had to eat breakfast very quick to avoid the wind.

Review 25:Breakfast is good. Very quiet place ! A hold building like a small castle , very interesting. It 's a good experience for staying a Morocco traditional Riad.

Review 26:The bathroom, although it was for my use only, was outside the room, downstairs.

Review 27:Bilal was an excellent surprise in my stay in this riad. He is very friendly, speaks Spanish fluently, answered all my questions on the moroccan culture and lifestyle, taught me some arabic and allowed me to be more confortable in my first trip to a muslim country, especially because I was on my own. If you are going to stay in the Medina, I’d recommend to call them previously to pick you up and guide you to the hotel. You’ll always have the chance to get lost in the medina without having to carry your luggage. I wouldn't have get there if they didn't guide me.

Review 28:Had a little problem at night with the front door key as couldn't work it, and nobody answered doorbell when we tried. Luckily a local shop owner helped us but could have been a long wait otherwise!

Review 29:Nice clean room, lovely terrace, nice breakfast

Review 30:We sent 3 times email to ask if yes/no it was possible to pick up at the train station with never any answer. Arriving late, our taxi driver called the hotel for location and we met one guy, visibly upset of our request at entrance of the medina to show us the way. For 50 euros room, our room had separate common bathroom. Most of the rooms are equiped with air conditioning heater that surprisingly stops at midnight , leaving us freezing in bed for the rest of the night ! It seems to be the policy of the house to cut the power of the air conditionings at midnight ! For a 50 euros or even a 70 euros rooms (orange room) we feel this is really unaccepteable ! Two of the people who are 'welcoming' clients should be replaced as their amability and willing to please is really quite minimum, sometimes even arrogant.

Review 31:The location is quite easy to find and into the old medina

Review 32:The building (inside) is very grand. Spacious, marbled reception area that draws the eye up an up. The rooms are smaller but perfectly formed and full of character. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace gives you a great view of the sea and the sprawling city of Tangier.

Review 33:Our room opened onto the ground floor central courtyard - noisy with lights going on ( and staying on all night) when guests arrive. Room had no windows to outside and it was a bit musty even with dehumidifier on. Think it was a bit overpriced for the quality of the room we were allocated.

Review 34:Good location within the medina. A large Riad with plenty of room- and sitting areas, very nice roof top terrace.

Review 35:I missed a bit of intimacy as the walls are thin and the windows face onto the patio (and in consequence other rooms) but obviously this is how all the old buildings used to be built.

Review 36:nicely decorated riad, amazing view from the rooftop, helpful staff, great location

Review 37:It is the real Medina experience in Tangier. We enjoyed our stay there for two nights...we are familiar with the Medina and can find our way to the Kasbah or the new city. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooftop breakfast good.

Review 38:No clear instructions on how to find the place or the option to meet someone to get you there No coat hangers - I'm an uber light male traveller but would have liked to hang my jeans up Because of the nature of the building any noise travels but hey, it's a great place to stay

Review 39:The place itself - beautiful riad, charmingly restored and better than a lot of boutique hotels. A perfect night's sleep. The best breakfast possible on a gorgeous terrace. Really friendly and helpful staff. Fantastic value - highly recommended and would return here, it really is awesome!

Review 40:Bilal and Gill were incredibly helpful and welcoming. Bilal helped my husband and I with such openness and generosity. We had a heart warming experience in Tanger thanks to our hosts.

Review 41:Not negative, just a note: Don't expect a hotel, it's a Riad with doors en windows to the inside of the house, thus less privacy.

Review 42:Perfect location to dive into Tanger Medina, behind the wooden door an ancient palace out of 1001 night. Very nice and helpfull staff!

Review 43:This was one of the greatest hotels I've ever stayed at. Perfect location in the Medina, absolutely breathtaking architecture and atmosphere upon first entering, nice staff, beautiful rooms, great breakfast on the rooftop terrace

Review 44:We did not like detached bathroom.

Review 45:We liked the breakfast on the roof terrace very much.

Review 46:Didn't have enough time to enjoy all the facilities.

Review 47:Right in the Medina yet in a nice quite spot. The roof terrace is amazing!

Review 48:The shower drain was a bit slow in draining the water.

Review 49:The staff were really friendly, and the view from the roof top was beautiful.

Review 50:Great location, excellent and very helpful staff, brilliant view from the terrace, lovely breakfast

Review 51:Such an amazing place

Review 52:unclear payment, but the owner corrected everything, thank you

Review 53:in the middle of medina

Review 54:Good location and very friendly staff

Review 55:Not necessarily a bad thing but It is in the Medina, so of course a little work to find your way.

Review 56:Lovely place. Warm host speaks good English.

Review 57:This guy in pink round glasses and red hat giving a tour and charging 200 dirhams,be careful and avoid him if you see him,

Review 58:nicely decorated riad

Review 59:Great location and wonderful Decore

Review 60:Rooms we're dark and damp and the beds and linens were NOT GOOD!! Not a great location.

Review 61:Nice owner & decent breakfast.

Review 62:Nothing

Review 63:We loved the place being traditional and staff and guide always helpful. would definatley recomend to friends and family

Review 64:Location, facilities, staff.

Review 65:Very good location in Medina. Would definitively stay again.

Review 66:We had trouble getting there. Some clues or information from the riad before hand would help.

Review 67:Staff, decorations, comfort.

Review 68:There's not so much privacy

Review 69:The hotel is in the center of Medina, beautiful terrace, very good breakfast

Review 70:I thought the room was quite stuffy because there are no windows to the outside. however, this is typical of a Riad.

Review 71:I suggest you arrange with the hotel to have a taxi meet you at the airport and guide you to the hotel. otherwise it will be very difficult to find in the maze of the medina. that said, the location is fantastic! it is within easy walking distance to everything and you can constantly stop back in to drop off goods or go to the bathroom, which is very convenient. the rooftop terrace is a delight and the rooftop breakfast is delicious and filling. the overall ambiance of the riad is completely charming.

Review 72:The doors should be repaired (we weren't able to close our room).

Review 73:Really nice riad, great location, nice roof terrace, good breakfast and helpful staff.

Review 74:Some small suggestions really: Were we the Innkeepers, we'd place bottled water in the baths, breakfast could easily be slightly more sumptuous and localized at the same time.

Review 75:The location is PERFECT- center of the Medina. The staff could not be more accommodating and eager to assist. The historic building was an outstanding and authentic backdrop for our Tangier experience.

Review 76:Bathroom separate to room (but private nonetheless) Difficult to find without help of locals (large tip expected, but don't give in, 20drh at most)

Review 77:Extremely helpful and polite staff Perfect location (5 min to Kasbah) Great breakfast on the roof terrace Quiet, relaxing and peaceful once inside and beautiful traditional decorations.

Review 78:Nothing. Our stay was superb. The wifi signal could have been strong at times, possibly.

Review 79:Fantastic staff, wonderful medina location. Clean, safe, with excellent breakfast. Great terrace.

Review 80:We thought this was a really pretty building and were treated very well by the staff, very friendly and warm and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and will come back whwn in Tanger for sure :-)

Review 81:Room dump but not a big deal with the electric radiator provided!

Review 82:The riad is absolutely beautiful and the French owners have done a great job in refurbish it keeping all the original details and tiles. It's really big and it feels very authentic, the best is far that we've seen in Morocco.

Review 83:I loved the proximity to everything in Tangiers. My advice is to stay in the Medina--it is the most lively, I promise. Breakfast is included, and it is really good, and the Moroccan tea is delicious.

Review 84:It's not too far from the Grand Socco, but it is extremely hard to find. We got lost twice finding our way back.

Review 85:The interior of the hostel is breathtaking. Very authentic and unique. The breakfast was incredible.

Review 86:Offered aperitifs in evening, listing wine by the glass and nibbles (peanuts etc), but no red by the glass and no nibbles. Disappointing as we'd gone back to enjoy the rooftop view with a drink.

Review 87:Location - walk from the port Furnishing Breakfast

Review 88:all was fine

Review 89:Beautiful Riad in the middle of the Medina. Yet, so silent and comfortable. Incredible terrace with very nice breakfast! - I would repeat! :)

Review 90:The rial (guest house) was dark, cold, and bedrooms are around an atrium which means no privacy nor quiet with people moving around. One has to out into the medina for anything and everything, including brinkable water. My wife thought the room and bathroom unclean.

Review 91:If you want to be in the heart of the old medina, this is an ideal location. But you won't find the place yourself, and need someone to guide you there. The owner needs to either provide a guide service for guests to find the premises. There are no signs at sll, not even on the door or wall outside.

Review 92:The Riad is gorgeous and both the staff and owner were friendly, gracious and very helpful. We shopped in the souk for vegetables with Rachid, who then cooked us traditional excellent tagines. Breakfast was also included and excellent with fresh orange juice, fresh local fried breads, local cheese, honey, and jam.

Review 93:The staff recommended the nearby restaurant "El Hammadi", which was a disappointment, unless you want to eat average Moroccan food surrounded by Europeans.

Review 94:Good location although a little difficult to find (like all places in any medina), Polite staff and nice view from the rooftop over the city and harbour.

Review 95:whats not to love?

Review 96:This oasis of calm in the hubbub of Tangier is an absolute gem. Chic and serene, you cannot fail to fall in love with this beautiful Riad. Our host, Giles and the charming Sayed could not have been more helpful, friendly and welcoming. The romance of the rooms and the magic of the ambiance are utterly enchanting. The views from the roof terrace with the mist off the sea and the calls from the mosques will be in my heart forever.

Review 97:In my opinion the Riat has an ok grade. It is pretty but not wonderful, the rooms are very private but they are ok, in general the house could be better if they restored it. About the staff, some of them were nicer than others. But the service was still good.

Review 98:It might be best to stay in a room on a higher floor. The bottom floorroom had a bit of a musty smell and felt a bit damp, however they didsupply a dehumidifier for this problem (which was a bit noisy, though)

Review 99:Loved the location and loved the interior design. Very nicely finished. The owner was welcoming and breakfast on the rooftop terrace excellent.

Review 100:Very noisy until the very early hours. (2Am). It felt as though theguests and staff were banging items late at night and people wererunning around the building shouting at one-another.There was also no air conditioning so it would get very hot in the summer. The rooms were already very hot anyway as it was not really possible to open the windows as they face into the building and people passing your room can see inside. The rooms also didn't have an en-suite bathroom and there were no towels at one point so that was a little disappointing but I was lucky and had my own. The lack of bathroom was understandable for the cheaper €38 room, but not expected for the €50 room. This place is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I've stayed at much better Riad's in Morocco (Marrakech and Asilah) for the same price.

Review 101:Basic, but comfortable. The breakfast was very good. The owner was alsovery nice and very pleasant.

Review 102:My room had no air. It was a long rectangle with no windows facing outside, only windows looking onto the interior. There was no fan and the room was so stuffy and the air so stale I could barely breathe. Very noisy, because you can hear everybody who enters the riad and comes upstairs. They talk and turn on the lights and all of this comes into your room. Pillows of poor quality. The bathroom, a few steps away, smelt of sewage. There was no plug for the sink and no plug for the bathtub. No hot water in the sink. Hand-held shower nozzle.

Review 103:A very attractive riad with lovely rooftop terrace with fantastic views. A good location in the Medina (but it is NOT in the Kasbah). Gilles, the owner, is very friendly and helpful.

Review 104:The hotel is localizated in the Tanger's old town in a street hard to find at the first time and the taxi cannot access to this street. The confort is not the better and we found a cockroach. Maybe it was because it's a old building.

Review 105:The breakfast is good, the staff people are nice and the terrace is so nice too.

Review 106:Room was not very private and we could hear a lot of noise (we were on the same floor as the front office). The bed was small and looked a bit dirty.

Review 107:Loved the style and the roofterrace in the hotel and the receptionist was very kind to pick us up because we couldn't find the hotel!

Review 108:it is such a beautiful place to stay, the lovely owner has taken such care to make every detail beautifully uniqur. i like that the rooms are all individually designed. its a nice quiet place to stay, and in such a great location buried inside the old medina. the roof is a lovely place to go, and if we had more time, i would have definitely taken advantage of the calm above the bustling streets. breakfast was delicious served on the roof in the morning sun. a really lovely place, im looking forward to going back!

Review 109:It's a pain to get to - you have to be on foot going through windingand confusing streets (really alleys, but they're all the samesize). If we didn't have a tour guide we never would have found theplace or gotten out of there. Staff does not speak any English orSpanish. All the rooms are around an indoor courtyard almost so it wasvery noisy and we heard birds all morning (early morning, like 4 am).

Review 110:The hotel itself is beautiful on the inside, with lots of tile work andartsy/antique fixtures and furniture. It has 2 rooftops with a viewof the city. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Review 111:Beautiful views from the terrace. Nice friendly staff and they clean the rooms and bathrooms, which is really nice when you have been outside all day.

Review 112:Well, where to begin... As mentioned by many in previous comments: thestaff. They act nice enough but they don't give a &€&@!About the cliënts. Here is the top three of incidents that gave us thisbad experience:1. At arrival, some mint tea was offered (which, normally speaking, is a Moroccan custom as a welcome). This one was charged... strange when you think that we did not order it. 2. The same staffmember 'advised' us a 'good' restaurant, even took us to it. Ended up to be very overpriced and it actually felt like were being 'fauxguided' towards the place, not something you'd expect from your hotelstaff!! 3. We also had to catch an early ferry from Tanger port. After consulting with another hotelstaff-member, we decided to take the ferry at 07:30. He told us that we would easily catch it if we started walking at 06.45, no problem. He also promised to prepare a simple breakfast (some coffee, some sweet bread, some fruit) to have the stomach filled up a bit. Next morning, no breakfast, nobody to find... very disapppointing. It would have been fine if he hadn't promised us anything in the first place, BUT... if you do, follow through! To top it off, we almost missed the ferry because of his fawlty information. Luckily we started walking about 30 mins earlier than he advised us. I would STRONGLY recommend to find a place with better value for your money, since it's certainly not in the cheaper section. To the hotelmanagement: change the crew and you night have a great place!

Review 113:The hotel itself and the view from the terrace.

Review 114:Breakfast could be a bit less basic. But it was still good.

Review 115:Beautiful building. Helpful staff. Nice rooms. Good recommendations on local dining and money exchange.

Review 116:a mi no me supuso un problema, pero la habitacion sin aire acondicionado en verano debe ser horrible ya que ademas no tenia ventanas a la calle

Review 117:muy centrico, y bonito, buen trato y muy buen desayuno

Review 118:Difficult to find. The front desk guy/Host wasn't that helpful, but the owner of the place was great.

Review 119:The place was really nice with beautiful decor. Our room was nice. Modern bathroom. Breakfast was good.

Review 120:A bath in the room would have been nice, instead of just a shower, but not a major problem as we were only there for one night.

Review 121:If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture and people then this is for you. Right in the middle of the Medina, fabulous for shopping for ornaments, throws/blankets, cooking tagines, etc. People very friendly, but you have to barter and be prepared to say "no". If you are looking to buy something in particular, ask Rachid at the hotel; he was very helpful and actually took us shopping. Gilles, the owner very welcoming too. Would definitely go back.

Review 122:The price was very high for the standard of this riad. There were damages to the room and we had problem with the aircon during the night. I would happily oversee these problems, but not for the price we paid.

Review 123:The setting is very traditional and the style rustic and elegant. I love the fact that it is located at the very heart of the old Medina.

Review 124:We would definitely stay there again - but not everyone might like the local layout of the house; or the fact that you need to ask for directions or the help of a small boy in finding it. It is easy to get lost in the alleyways of the old town.

Review 125:Traditional riad architecture of three floors round a small courtyard; breakfast on rooftop; set in narrow alleyway of the medina (old town) amongst little shops.

Review 126:The most expensive Riad in all our trip in Marocco, damp rooms very narrow, lack of atmosphere and working of details. We had a quarrel with the staff who promises an early (7:15 am !) breakfast but which was not served... Fortunatly the friendly night guard made some coffee for us. We strongly recommend the neighbour Riad !

Review 127:location in the Medina, nice rooms with nice bathrooms. Some people may like the lean marocco decoration.

Review 128:It's hard to believe this is the same place as previous reviews, butstaff were indifferent to the point of being rude. Perhaps it was justan off day or because we were the only guests in the entire hotel, butwe felt like slightly unwanted guests and didn't get the experiencethat other people have raved about. But I'm sure the place runsbetter when the owner is present. To top it off, we arranged for an 8 ambreakfast to allow us to catch an early ferry, which the staff were wellaware of. Breakfast was served more than half an hour late and consistedof some seriously stale pancakes and instant coffee, so thankfully wedidn't need long to eat (leave) it and managed to make the ferryanyway. Presumably the fresh bread we saw delivered was for the staffbreakfast, who remained on the terrace and left us to let ourselves out.Strange. We had nothing but super friendly and efficient service andexceptional breakfasts for the rest of our 5 week trip in Morocco, sothis one stood out as the most disappointing.

Review 129:The building has been immaculately restored and feels like a museum, with many incredible pieces on every floor. Location is fantastic -right in the heart of the medina and not difficult to find, with asuperb view from the terrace. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, albeitin need of some attention on the simple (but important) things such aspillows and bedding.

Review 130:Gilles, the owner of Arous Chamel is a wonderful host; nothing is aproblem and I was glad that he joined us on the terrace on the eveningof our arrival. He is incredibly hospitable and took the time to make usall feel welcome. We had dinner in the Riad on the evening of ourarrival, and the food was delicious. One of our guests is glutenintolerant and they ensured that she was catered for. In the land ofcouscous and bread, rice and tagines are the solution! Thank you Gillesfor our first night in Morrocco a memorable one.

Review 131:Dirty.

Review 132:There was a roof on the property.
