Reviews for Hotel Continental
Review 1:Room is old but clean. Exterior and interior of the hotel is much better then room.
Review 2:2 min walk to Medina. In front of the port. Nice port view from terrace. Enough hot water. Clean. Good wifi. 24/7 save parking. Sunny breakfast terrace. Typical design in hotel but not room.
Review 3:Small portable tv in bedroom. Hot water on a time table. Feel the hotel lacks anything going on? Breakfast very basic I suppose you get what you pay for. Would have loved a boiled egg. We had a change of room due to my husband cutting his head while showering on a low marbil shelf.
Review 4:Relaxing feel to hotel, very interesting artefacts around hotel a bit like a very interesting museum. Hotel has a strong Arabic feel. Hotel was built in 1870. Rooms were comfortable up to date. Room kept clean towels changed daily. Staff very helpful. Hotel was opposit ferry to Tarifa Spain, 5minute walk to ferry terminal. Hotel was placed at the edge of old city, easy access to old city. Good security around hotel.
Review 5:The facilities are too basic. For a night transit stay it might be okay but to attract people to stay longer, needs to add more things.
Review 6:The location is excellent. Right at the Tanger (city) port. If you arrived by ferry from Spain, you can walk up to the hotel. Outside the hotel wall, it is the Medina. Very convenient. However you will need to take a taxi if you are going to the bus or train station.
Review 7:We wish the wifi reached our bedroom, but the connection was great in the lobby.
Review 8:This was the first location we visited during our stay in Morocco, and we have to give a huge thank you to the entire staff at Hotel Continental for helping us start our trip off the best way possible. The hotel itself was nicely decorated, and fun to explore the entire building as there were a bunch of different 'sections' to it. The front desk helped us plan our stay in Tangier, giving us tips on where to get taxis/tour guides to take us to Cap Spartel and the Cave of Hercules as well as a solid estimate on what we should expect to pay. They gave us a map of the medina as well which helped while we explored its sites. Most importantly, however, was how their front desk helped us change our travel plans on the fly, giving us advice on cost and how to approach getting a taxi from Tangier to Chefchaoen after we canceled our car reservation.
Review 9:Breakfast could be a little warmer (coffee). Would be nice if the hotel could provide a proper map of the medina and area.
Review 10:Liked how close it is to the medina and the ferry. While the hotel is not up to date for 2015 it is in fair shape for a hotel with it's history which is what we wanted. Rooms were very clean with great chamber maids.
Review 11:The restaurant is wonderful, but the food is somewhat tasteless. I would prefer to pay a little more and have decent food, I would eat here each night.
Review 12:Everything .the place is steeped in the feel of old Tangiers It was a wonderful experience. Needs a traditional musician playing the laud in one of the tea salons...A pool would be nice.
Review 13:Not much. Not flash rooms but good value
Review 14:Great location opposite the ferry terminal. Fascinating old hotel, like a museum in itself, with an interesting shop downstairs, a combination antique and souvenir shop run by Jimmy who had some great stories to tell.
Review 15:The hotel was beautiful and lifted our impressions or Tangier as soon as we arrived. It has great character and the decorations next the dining area in particular are stunning. Location is also great, with the casbah a quick walk away, and you get a great view of the port/ocean & Tangier itself if you have one of the facing rooms. We loved staying at the Hotel Continental and would book again in a hartbeat if we're ever back in the area.
Review 16:I liked the location of the hotel, the decoration of the room, the antique furniture in the room and in the lobby as well as the sea view from our room.
Review 17:The breakfast was not that good and the waiters hovered over me
Review 18:Very convenient to the ferry...the sea view and the balcony was great...wi fi was consistent...I liked the "grand old hotel" aspect and even though it is somewhat run down now, there is some work being done to make improvements
Review 19:Equipment of the hotel seems to be rather old and used. No lift
Review 20:Perfect location on hillside in Medina with beautiful view of port and sea. Hotel contains many historical features.
Review 21:Grumpy staff No tourist information at all Can only pay for dinner with cash, won't put it on your room bill.
Review 22:Magnificent old hotel Beautiful views Great breakfast in a beautiful room or terrace Dinner also very good
Review 23:Wi-fi is a joke. Please note - no alcohol is served - you'll have to Get Your cold beer somewhere Else.
Review 24:In the middel of the Medina and With views to the harbours, Beach, sea and hills. The interior of the hotel is quite special to.
Review 25:Hotel badly needs a renovation. Breakfast was pretty poor. Restaurant was not open the rest of the day. No warm water (shower), except for early in the morning.
Review 26:The location is excellent
Review 27:No elevator. Room only fair. Shower attachment broken. Only one tap working in bathroom sink. Very noisy at night - thin wall
Review 28:Close to ferry and Medina.
Review 29:So much atmosphere in this old hotel. It has a great history. It is a bit threadbare, but that's part of the fun for me. I'm sure I really like staying in these places occasionally and imagine life a 100 years ago... Great location near the port and our room had extensive views over the port. Unfortunately we arrived late at night and left early the next morning. We would have liked to have checked out the local area more. The breakfast is in an amazing building next door filled with beautiful tiled walls.
Review 30:No lift to 3rd floor.
Review 31:Fabulous Moroccan breakfast room opening onto terrace overlooking the harbour. Beautiful restaurant. Spacious room with seating area. Wonderful faded glory feel. 5 minutes walk from the Tarifa ferry - you see it as the ferry docks. On the edge of the medina. Expect a slightly quirky stay! On returning from dinner outside the hotel, about 10 pm, we found the gates locked but a shout went up from the local cafe and a night watchman eventually appeared. Had a hot drink on the terrace about 11pm but the next night were told that they weren't served after 10pm! But we loved it and would love to go back. Excellent value for money.
Review 32:The friendly staff from reception to the restaurant and Jimmy , running the bazaar off the hotel foyer. Great location and views over the harbour with quick access to the medina.
Review 33:The bed cover had cigarette burns in it, the shower was broken, the mirror still had the remnants of the label sticker from 20 years ago, and that was probably the most recent time anyone installed or fixed anything in the room. This is a stunning building, with a storied history, but it's time the owner paid a little attention to the present.
Review 34:I had no huge expectation, but this is a historical building locatedacross the street from the ferry to Spain. The place is very cool withlots of history, but needs much tlc. Still, for the $ and location (alsohuge rooms), it's a great place for one night. You can walk to theferry. And they have a bidet :).
Review 35:Little details need attention, such as curtains that didn't slide and were unhooked.
Review 36:Staff got us into our room, even though we were quite early. Spacious double room. Hotel balconies overlook harbour and ferryport, as well as parts of the city. Arab atmosphere in public spaces - lovely!
Review 37:No elevators. Limited breakfast. Sometimes poorly repaired facilities. TV poor. Taxis don't like to drive all the way to hotel entrance and charge extra for it.
Review 38:Beautiful views. Good location at fringe of medina.
Review 39:No a/c in some rooms. They are working on updating rooms.. We got an updated one. Our friends looked at four before finding one.
Review 40:This historic hotel had memorable photo ops at every turn. Getting to and from the ferry was straightforward and easy (however, there are a LOT of stairs involved.) Loved our balcony and the breakfast.
Review 41:This is my third time staying at Hotel Continental. Great location and a beautiful building, with good breakfast. Stay in room 310 if you can. No view, but the room was much nicer.
Review 42:The condition of the building, it is run down. Our room was nothing like it was shown on the web site. There are zero amenities, not even a fridge. The access to the hotel is horrible.
Review 43:The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Review 44:Being woken up early every marning by call to prayer. However this is part of the ambience. Faciltities in a building dating from 1870 were a bit dated.
Review 45:Location - right by the Ferry terminal and boat to Spain Fabulous old building - a registered national moument. Ate there every night the food was so good Great views over the harbour and sea.
Review 46:Unfriendly, unhelpful male staff who were borderline rude. We were 2 middle aged women travelling and when we left for the afternoon via the downstairs gate we found ourselves locked out on return. When we told the management, they couldn't have cared less!
Review 47:Close to the Medina and ferry to Tariffa. For a very old building, the bathroom was well maintained.
Review 48:perfect location and atmosphere, if you want to stay up late and party this will be tricky as the gate to the hotel gets locked by 1 am and you wont be able to get back to your room until 7 am next morning
Review 49:Due to the fact that the furnishing is old, issues inevitably appear. The most unpleasant part was that in the bathroom there was always water on the floor, but for one day it was manageable.
Review 50:The location and the view from the terrace, over the Tanger harbor. The hotel is old but still nice, although renovation in the rooms is needed. I highly recommend it for one night in Tanger.
Review 51:Bare, dusty room. No view. Uncomfortable beds (two singles for a married couple). Loud noise from adjacent houses and lane late into the night. Unreliable wifi. Awful breakfast. Surly staff (snapped at me that I left my used honey sachet at the "buffet" table not my dining table). Stale pastries. Antique looking eggs. Sounds bad? Yes it is - and it's still expensive for what you get.
Review 52:Nothing much. The desk clerk was attentive and helped carry our bags.
Review 53:Air con was a bit weak and weedy.
Review 54:Fantastic to arrive by ferry, walk up the hill to a classic-looking hotel with great views of the port sitting right on the edge of the Medina. Very helpful staff. Good quality food. Many rooms had been redecorated in a standard modern European style (i.e. not moroccan).
Review 55:We stayed at this hotel for one night, on the way to Malaga before we take the ferry to cross the straights Gibraltar. Old looking but storyfull Continent Hotel is very well situated right near the old city (Medina) and the ferry port which saves you to take taxi everytime you go out.
Review 56:Continental tangierAfter reading other posts here, I arrived with very low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, its glory has faded, and it is in sore need of a sugar daddy to get things back to their former glory. But even so, it is still a lot of fun. The public areas are delightful, the rooms were clean, the wifi worked well, and the breakfast was adequate. The location could not be better--just a few minutes' walk to the Spanish ferries or the old medina. What I enjoyed most was the old-fashioned customer-oriented service by the staff, who went out of their way to be helpful. At check-in we were offered several rooms--we chose an air-conditioned room with a solid lock but facing a dismal street rather than one without air-conditioning, with a dodgy lock that faced the sea. Staff helped us get tickets printed and took their time to give advice or answer questions. Not everything was great--the hot water was unpredictable and while the lack of an elevator didn't bother us, it would be a problem to people with mobility issues. But all in all, our stay in Tangier and at this hotel was the highlight of our trip to Morocco.
Review 57:Continental Hotel is a place full of history, with lot of details remembering the great place that it was in past. It's easy to imagine Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart drinking a tea in the beautiful saloons... The room was big, with old but amazing decoration, but needs some restyling! The breakfast saloon have a great balcony with a nice view to the Tangier port. The breakfast could be better but the staff is very nice and helpful. It was a good experience for one night.
Review 58:Dirty , bad reception staff , the photos of the hotel on booking.com are have no relation to the room in reality , shortly this hotel is a group of swindlers
Review 59:No thing
Review 60:The toilet wasn't clean when we got to our room. The breakfast wasn't very appealing. We suspect there were bed bugs.
Review 61:The location, the views from the room, the old world look of the hotel, the employees were friendly and helpful.
Review 62:I really loved this place . It was old and beautiful and real. Not the place to stay if you want the Marriot.
Review 63:Very classic old hotel. I loved it but it won't be up to most westerners standards. Oozes old world. Hot water only available certain hours. Close to the old town and you can actually walk to it from the ferry . It's about a mile. Best wifi of any we had in Europe . They don't serve alcohol.
Review 64:Beds very uncomfortable. Especially hardest pillows on earth Also be sure to stay away from Tangier during Ramadan. (Not related to hotel.)
Review 65:Felt like living in a oriental museum, old-school type hotel. Clean, spacious rooms, multi-language personal
Review 66:Location: in medina, close to historic sites, port and beach. Hotel itself has interesting history and architecture. Elegant restaurant and interesting bazaar on site.
Review 67:We were looking for something easy, not expansive, with a nice room's view. And this hotel was exactly what we were looking for. It was easy to get there with the car, and the free parking was ideal! Nice terrace!
Review 68:The location is close to the ferry and right in the medina. I liked the hotel's restaurant. The hotel gives an impression of being somewhat rundown, but it is clean and comfortable.
Review 69:The challenge for an older person is that you have to wheel your bags up a hill through the medina. When you eventually reach the hotel you have to pull your bags up 2 flights of steps
Review 70:The hotel faces the harbour and the rooms have great views. Each room had its own balcony.
Review 71:I was impressed by all of the staff within the hotel. They was very friendly and also extremely helpful. The room it was very comfortable. I will certainly be staing here again.
Review 72:Maintenance is somewhat lacking, but the price/comfort ratio is fine.
Review 73:The hotel has an excellent location, overlooking the port. It makes walking in the medina easy. It is a historic hotel with color. Staff are competent, multi-lingual and accommodating.
Review 74:Lack of a comfortable lobby to sit in. We used the covered patio with tables.
Review 75:The location is great and thr views looking out over the water are lovely. The staff was very gracious and accommodating, allowing us to check in at 8 am after arriving on the night train from Marrakech and allowing us to cancel our final night without penalty. Our two rooms had been remodeled and were comfortable.
Review 76:Not really, but expect an old interior with some shabby furniture! It is part of its charm though.
Review 77:We found this hotel very late at night! It was at a great location. Unlike other riads/dars, this was a proper big hotel. It was interesting- the decoration was old and could not compare to the modern riads- but still you could tell its beauty years ago. It also has its stories with people's memories... I like this place, especially its bazzar and restaurant.
Review 78:Slighted faded, definitely elderly, but gracious in every way. A magnificent palace with a wonderful history, right in the old Medina. Fabulous views. Highly recommended
Review 79:Amazing historic hotel in the old part of Tangier adjacent to the port with wonderful harbour views and good restaurant! Great value and couldn't be better located in relation to the port! A place where history has unfolded! Great value!
Review 80:Room docor is typical of a fading beauty, still comfortable but not contemporary
Review 81:The hotel is a portrait of a time gone by. Beautiful tile work, many unique spaces, excellent restaraunt down the street, across the highway flfrom the catamaran to Tarifa Spain.
Review 82:Hotel needs a complete revonation, nothing like the pictures. Limited hot water and very cold hotel. Breakfast was cold. Blankets bedding ect were extremely questionable.
Review 83:Interesting hotel but has had its day.
Review 84:This is the perfect location for Tangier and the hotel retains many of its early features. Most of the rooms have been modernized at some point in the past, but great for those who want something away from the normal - we loved it. Breakfast was great !!
Review 85:No hot water. Time restrictions for hot water and even then the water was just luke warm
Review 86:Beautiful hotel, comfy rooms and nice breakfast. Excellent location
Review 87:We have stayed in this hotel twice before. This time we had a really fantastic room with a four poster bed. The Continental is a beautiful old hotel with a great terrace over the port.
Review 88:Hot water came only after 18.oo and then it really wasn't hot water, but warm so that you could get a shower, but not a bath.
Review 89:Lots of original (almost 100 years old) things in this hotel, such as original furniture, flooring etc. You can feel the history. Good breakfast. Bathroom and sheets and towels very clean. Wi-fi connection was working excellent. Friendly staff.
Review 90:We emailed the hotel before arriving but no one responded. The hot water doesn't work all day. The rooms are poorly kept, and the hotel appears to be falling apart
Review 91:The view was nice. Breakfast was great. The staff helped us with transportation when we checked out.
Review 92:The room had torn curtains, the bathroom had broken light bulbs, the toilet flush handle was not working properly and there is no ventilation system. No warning when works ongoing assuming all tourists are out of the hotel: we had cold showers. Brrr!!! This was unacceptable during a still cool season!
Review 93:The Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was acceptable. Location is great near old city center and beach.
Review 94:1) The hotel urgently needs a deep maintenance since it clearly shows it has more than 130 years old.2) The rooms are lugubrious and need urgent refurbishment. 3) Just few rooms have exterior view; all remaining have windows to inner patio or courtyards. 4) The bathroom floor seemed too old and unsafe. 5) The wifi just reaches some rooms. 6) The bedspreads and curtains are faded and too old. 7) There is no escalator or elevator, so you need to climb *SEVERAL* stairs, even if you get to the hotel by taxi. 8) The hotel's name is similar to another hotel, so, it is employed by taxi drivers to "confuse themselves" and charge you a much higher fee since they drive towards the other hotel instead, and later they go to the correct one. 9) The hotel is located in an area that turns pretty unsafe by night.
Review 95:Excellent location with fantastic views!! Helpful and friendly staff. There are some living rooms at first floor that still show the hotel wasa magnificent one several decades ago.
Review 96:Breakfast can be a real hit-or-miss affair if you don't arrive early. Once the buffet runs out of certain foods or juices - which happens regularly - they often aren't replenished. Eggs in an inadequately-heated chafing dish quickly grow cold.
Review 97:Always love staying at the Hotel Continental - loaded with history and ambiance, and the staff is cheery and helpful. Fantastic harbor views and a convenient location. Lunch and dinner in the beautiful restaurant are well-executed, with gracious service.
Review 98:The rooms are not very nice, but still it is worrh staying at this hotel.
Review 99:The location is excellent. The breakfast at the terrace is good. The building is historically interesant.
Review 100:Tv reception poor no foreign channels. No alcohol served anywhere in the hotel. Plus common parts which are beautiful completely unheated so couldn't be used and enjoyed. Good excellent in the restaurant but very poor breakfast.
Review 101:Location perfect plus 2 minute walk to the medina and a 10 min walk to Cafe de Paris and the Hotel Minzah. No one bothered us at all in the medina and all the cafe staff in the souk were charming as were the stall holders in the central market.
Review 102:Wifi only worked 10 % of the time (in the middle of the night). Wasted hours trying to connect, e-mails were lost etc. And public pc in lobby is with French keyboard which makes it very difficult for non-frogs to use. The pc was also extremely dirty (like the tv-remote in the room - otherwise cleaning standard ok). Also stairs to 3rd. floor was quite a climb (it's an old building with very high ceilings).
Review 103:Location great, easy to see and find when you arrive by fast ferry from Spain. Great views, charming old decor, breakfast on terrace unique.
Review 104:The room was horrible, small, dirty, broken light, hair and stain on sheet, not enough towel and when I asked for more she rudely said no. Very bad experience. Breakfast was awful.
Review 105:hotel could have been more comfortable, and noises really echoed in the halls so it was loud
Review 106:can tell it was once a beautiful hotel, and it has an interesting history. location was great, and staff was very helpful. breakfast was ok (buffet style, so if you came at the wrong time things were cold), but the coffee was surprisingly good.
Review 107:The bed linens weren't the most comfortable. The bathrooms could use something - perhaps a little bit of refreshening, better lighting, or new fixtures.
Review 108:Hotel Continental was very easy to find inside the Tanger Medina. It's perched on the edge of the medina on a bluff overlooking the Tanger Port. Very easy to walk to if you arrive in Tanger from the Spanish ferries. The hotel appears like a once grand dame of a hotel that has seen glorious days before but is now a somewhat faded shadow of herself. However the hotel was fine to stay in. It was clean, comfortable, convenient to the tourist sites and reasonably priced. I would consider staying there again if I were to go back to Tanger.
Review 109:As you probably know the rooms are in desperate need of upgrade. Everything in the room is just in poor condition and the bathroom feels dirty. Television, furniture, bed all need to be completely redone. Walls had huge cracks. Door did not seem secure. Did not feel safe so we put a chair in front of the door. Very sad
Review 110:The breakfast was nice, the room and terrace for breakfast very nice. Lobby is good enough. The floor with all the tile is lovely. The gift shop and charming man who runs the gift shop is GREAT!
Review 111:No WiFi available in rooms
Review 112:Beautiful old world grandeur. Spacious room and beautiful ceiling. Reception staff are lovely ( breakfast staff a bit gruff)
Review 113:Although the ferry terminal is just across a busy road from the hotel, access from the hotel is blocked in this direction so if you have lots of luggage, ask the hotel to book a taxi. By the way, the boat is sure to be late! We watched them allowing cars and foot passengers on up till 8am on a ferry advertised online as leaving at 7am. Factor this into your travel plans in Spain!
Review 114:We arrived to find a heated argument in the lobby between the stalwart concierge and a very angry Spanish family unhappy with their booking. Once we finally checked in our room was basic and minus the promised view of sea or medina (it looked into an internal courtyard) but we only wanted a brief overnight stay close to the ferry and it is perfect for this.
Review 115:Didn't have hot water at night. Shower head fixture needs to be replaced A little basic if you're not getting a deal.
Review 116:Beautiful Building Forgot my umbrella, they held it for three days and had it for me when I returned Great breakfast
Review 117:to many staff not knowing what to do just seating around by arriving nobody helps you bring suitcase to the reception all the stairs even they see you arriving even many staff around
Review 118:view from room breakfast buffet staff from reception very helpfull nice rooms
Review 119:i arrived tired and late on my own. i specified a non smoking room and got one that stank of old cigarettes. the bathroom floor was clean but partially flooded with towels on the floor and the shower did not work. i opened the window to ventilate the room and it began to smell of urine.i know they have better rooms but this one was bad.
Review 120:love the location and charm of the hotel. things don't have to be brand new to feel welcoming. it has an air of history and it is well situated for exploring the city. free wifi and friendly staff.
Review 121:Climbing three flights of stairs to our rooms; and The restaurant closing without notice due to a conference booking
Review 122:We liked: The old world courtesy of the staff; Conversing with the charming reception staff in whatever languages we had in common; The view across the harbour; Fine French/Moroccan cuisine at reasonable prices; The crumbling grandeur of the hotel; Its sense of history; The hotel's location convenient for travellers coming by ferry from Spain; and the hotel's proximity to the lively medina.
Review 123:Grand old historic and beautiful hotel (although a bit run down, but you should see past that). Location Good breakfast and restaurant Value for money
Review 124:The location, the atmosphere, everything about this old hotel was just amazing. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. Staying at the Hotel Continental in the Medina was a truly unforgettable experience.
Review 125:At one time it was a Grand hotel but sadly it is no more. It is worn and much TLC is needed. But still charming with a unique Moroccan feel.
Review 126:Dinner on the patio and the proximity to the port.
Review 127:Check your room before accepting. The rooms allocated to us were nothing like the photo and details we selected when booking on this site. We we're allocated other rooms that were acceptable. Yes..we enjoyed our stay
Review 128:Old world charm Location
