Reviews for Hotel Ilaria & Residenza dell'Alba
Review 1:This hotel may have been 4 star but that must have been long time ago and it is in need of major refurbishing. Beds were not comfortable and on bed linen you could fell that it was over bleached and felling very rough. Bar in the hotel lobby was more like a cafeteria with a choice of single wine per glass of a dodgy quality. Breakfast is very, very poor for a 4 star hotel.
Review 2:Location. Staff.
Review 3:I have no complaints at all! The staff were great and the room was gorgeous - fast internet in the room. The hotel bar is wonderful and a real highlight of our stay. The location couldn't be better. We'll definitely stay there again.
Review 4:The toilet paper dispenser was broken, which was unattractive. The towel heater was non-functional.
Review 5:The location is great. Wandering Lucca from the hotel on foot is easy and is the best way to see the city.
Review 6:The location in Lucca was great. Room was quite large and very clean. Breakfast was very good with a wide variety of items. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Review 7:Nothing
Review 8:Very attentive staff who could not do enough to make us feel at home. Fantastic location We have had a great experience and have liked both the choice of our hotel and the Puccini recital at San Giovanni church Lucca
Review 9:The shower in the upper room of our suite had a dirty floor. The blue tiled step entering the shower was very dirty and gave a very poor impression indeed. It was a pity.
Review 10:Staff were most pleasant & helpful at reception and at breakfast.
Review 11:We had a problem with our VERY hard pillows. When we inquired if there were others, they said yes, but told us we had only a standard room. Housekeeping then provided them. We felt that a hotel as nice as the Ilaria should have NO substandard pillows. Also, the single slow unresponsive elevator was inadequate.
Review 12:Response at the front desk in arranging reservations and arranging cars. Liked the gratis bike system.
Review 13:Previous guests must have smashed a glass on our bedroom floor (tiled) and it hadn't been vacuumed properly as I trod on a shard of glass by the bed and hurt my foot. On looking closely, there were quite a few shards on the floor. We let the hotel reception know and they ensured it was made safe whilst we were out to dinner. Apart from this, I would defintely stay here again.
Review 14:Location is superb, just inside Lucca's walls and there was plenty of parking (15 euros per day). Good, spacious rooms with large bathroom which was situated a short walk from the main hotel. Breakfast was varied and very good. There are complementary drinks and snacks by Reception on offer 24 hours a day. Tip - Go to the 1st floor where the breakfast area is and there is a hot tub and terrace to relax on - very pleasant! Mostly British and American guest seem to be staying here.
Review 15:Everything was excellent, no complaints what so ever.
Review 16:A real comfortable hotel, we stayed in the annex which was extremely quiet and a very short walk from the main building. The staff were excellent, really helpful, there was a great variety of choices for breakfasts and we loved being able to use the hotel bicycles.
Review 17:Free appetizers were very limited . Prosecco bottles emptied quickly and were not replaced. Young man checking us in was not very welcoming. Our room was expensive.
Review 18:Free bikes, clean room with plenty of space, good access to bike path, great breakfast. Most of the staff was friendly and helpful.
Review 19:This was our first visit and it was wonderful. The location was perfect. We stayed in the renovated rooms and it was very well appointed. We will come back soon.
Review 20:Breakfast was only average. You had to make your own coffee. Eggs not made to order. Breakfast served in a different building to our accommodation.
Review 21:Spacious room in a good location.
Review 22:The large groups of American tourists who used the whole terrace one evening and also most of the breakfast room.
Review 23:The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The lovely terrace where you could enjoy a leisurely breakfast with a glass of prosecco and complementary prosecco between 5 and 7 pm. Free use of the bicycles.
Review 24:On arrival we were told we had been upgraded to a superior room, which turned out to be in an annex a few minutes walk away. The room and bathroom were indeed bigger and better, but we did not wish to be outside the hotel facilities. Apparently they had a large group arriving, who wanted to have rooms together - so much for the generous upgrade! We dug our heels in and refused to be fobbed off with the annex, so finally the staff gave in and accepted our insistence on the "inferior" room we had booked - in the hotel itself, where we were perfectly happy. Apart from that we have no complaints at all.
Review 25:We very much liked the location. The hotel itself was really pleasant and comfortable, and the staff polite and cheerful.
Review 26:Great and convenient location close to the old city center, nice facility, very helpfull staff at the reception, free bikes, free snacks in the afternoon, very good breakfast
Review 27:No bad experiences but the restricted road access to inner city have our driver from Montepulciano finding the way to approach the hotel difficult. Not a prob for us.
Review 28:Staff very helpful. Location is excellent with inner city benefit but also ready access by car.
Review 29:No bad experience but if you want to park at the hotel it's another 15 Euros a night so that's a hefty 'extra' to what would otherwise be a fairly reasonable price. Breakfast is good without being spectacular but the terrace location is fab.
Review 30:We got upgraded to a suite for the same price without asking so naturally we feel we got good value for money but even without that, the facilities are excellent, staff very helpful and location fantastic to see the city.
Review 31:Shower is for dwarfs - only came up to my chest so if you wanted to wash your hair or relax under it, tough!
Review 32:The hotel is near the walls so accessible by car whilst being close to the centre of town. There is a little terrace to sit on if you want to relax but the jacuzzi was not working when we were there - a pity. There is a little lounge downstairs which is comfortable and you can help yourself to coffee, nibbles, etc. all day and reception will get you a glass of wine etc. if you ask. The rooms are all comfortable although my nephew and his fiancee had to have a smaller room (at a discount) and this might be too small if you are staying more than a couple of nights. Breakfast was good with a very smiley waitress.
Review 33:Hotel parking was in hotel outdoor parking lot , car was under a tree, and after 6 days car was covered with sap. Spent over €40 and a day in automated plus hand car wash plus sap removing sprays and still was unable to remove all the sap stains. Real bummer on a Mercedes...
Review 34:Location, room comfort, buffet breakfast and personnel were. all impeccable.
Review 35:Needed to daily report no light in pitch black clothes storage room in room 15, this situation was never resolved over our 3 night stay. A very small matter in an otherwise very pleasant experience. Would definitely stay again.
Review 36:Very helpful friendly staff throughout our 3 night stay. Very convenient location and our hire car was taken care of whenever necessary.
Review 37:Hotel is wonderful. Very clean, comfortable and nicely appointed. Free bikes for the guests and located 2 blocks from the city walls. Snacks and drinks available all day for the weary traveler. Beautiful patio to eat breakfast on in the mornings. Lovely property!
Review 38:If you are traveling in a large auto, then be prepared to negotiate the narrow streets of an older Italian village.
Review 39:The location is exquisite, right inside-the-walls of Old Town Lucca.
Review 40:Booked online and the hotel far exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Residenza del Alba, the old tower; the rooms were large and modern with very good facilities. In fact one of our rooms had kitchen facilities too. The staff were lovely and very helpful.
Review 41:Reception staff were extremely helpful, rooms were comfortable and clean, breakfast was very good and the provision of an all day snack and drinks bar was very welcome
Review 42:No non slip mat for bath/shower (dangerous). Bath surface very slippy .
Review 43:Breakfast excellent free refreshments always available free bikes, comfortable.
Review 44:The location couldn't have been better - inside the walled old city, but just outside the restricted area. They have their own parking lot. Breakfast was great.
Review 45:Wish we could have stayed longer.
Review 46:Loved being so centrally located and loved the hotel bikes because it is a must to ride bikes on the walls of the city of Lucca. We enjoyed a fabulous breakfast in a charming sunroom, the food was delicious.
Review 47:Very noisy during the night, the wifi signal was poor or non functioning at all. The staff was not present at all - just at the arrival.
Review 48:The location was nice - not so far from the center.
Review 49:The only complaint we had is the difficulty of controlling the Air con - every time we returned to the room it felt like a fridge
Review 50:Location and facilities really good, and having its own car parking is a real bonus in Lucca. Very well appointed
Review 51:Without having been notified of this at the time of booking, I was given a room located ~150m away from the hotel building. The room itself was good, but in a loud street. We didn't get a good nights sleep due to a party/loud music from next door bar until midnight, and construction works kicking off at 7:00 am sharp. Constant, relatively loud ticking sound coming from the radiator.
Review 52:Breakfast.
Review 53:The bed was very comfortable. The special breakfast for my (coeliac) wife was fine. The air-conditioning was reasonably quiet. Drivers need to be aware that the hotel can book them into the Zona Trafico Limitato. Enter the city by the Porta Elisa, and turn into the fourth street (seemingly a dead end) on the right off Via Elisa.
Review 54:If you stay in the tower rooms, which are a block from the main reception and rest of hotel, there is a bar opposite and on a Friday night was very loud and noisy. No phone or wifi was working during our stay.
Review 55:Great location to the old city
Review 57:We were given a split-level suite in an adjacent medieval tower which was most unusual and great fun. The delightful receptionist was particularly welcoming and very helpful.
Review 58:The breakfast room was a bit of a disappointment. It looks a bit tired and in need of refurbishment in keeping with the standard of the rest of the hotel. Also not keen on some guests bringing pet dogs into the breakfast room. We had tea and coffee making facilities but were not given clean cups when the room was cleaned. Would not have expected this in any hotel much less a four star.
Review 59:We chose to stay here because of it's location by the wall. All the amenities of beautiful Lucca are within easy walking distance. At check in we were upgraded to a superior room with one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in.
Review 60:Nothing to dislike!
Review 61:The space, quality, luxury of having 2 bathrooms, jacuzzi, huge bed, excellent location, free hire of bicycles, excellent helpful staff - everything we could have wished for!
Review 62:Bike lights could have been checked to ensure they are working. Hot breakfast offering might be varied occasionally.
Review 63:Alessandro on the front desk was very helpful, professional and engaging in his dealings with us. Our suite in the Residenza dell' Alba was an added surprise - an upgrade provided when we arrived. It was a luxury experience that added an extra dimension of joy to a very happy experience of this hotel.
Review 64:Nothing all perfect.
Review 65:Lovely hotel within the walls, really lovely breakfast, cold meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, fruit , wonderful pastries, and esspesso coffee. Complimentary drinks and snacks during the day.
Review 66:The rooms, walls and furniture were slightly 'used', and could use a freshening up.
Review 67:The staff was very helpful. The hotel has free bicycles to explore this wonderful town. The best way to get out, thanks to Alessandro for recommending a route etc.
Review 68:Breakfast area is a covered terrace so it was a bit chilly (I'm sure it would be nice in warmer weather) It was cold and rainy outside so the heating was on during our stay, but it was too hot; we couldn't adjust the heating. There was a bad smell from the bathroom.
Review 69:Location and free bikes were great. Coffee&drinks&nibbles throughout the day, in the small area next to the reception were appreciated. (Don't expect a large lobby; but with so many places in Lucca, who would want to sit in their hotel, anyway?) Wi-fi was good-we stayed on the first floor- but our friends with a room on the ground floor, had very weak or no connection...so if wi-fi is important for you, make sure you ask for a room that has good wi-fi. The second floor was being renovated at the time (low season) so cannot comment on upper floor. The rooms were small (but not tiny) clean and comfortable..
Review 70:The Ilaria was the best hotel we stayed in during a 1 month trip to Northern Italy. We especially loved the sumptuous breakfast and happy hour. It is close to the Duomo and other sites and about .6 mile from the train station.
Review 71:The rooms are still rather small [evidently that cannot be remedied]. The lift was rather temperamental
Review 72:about 5 years ago we stayed here and it was modern, clean, soulless, a bit spartan and superbly located....they have remedied its lack of soul and made it moderatley luxurious with a pleasant complimentary bar area to imrove wellbeing. It is probably now as good as it can be, which is very good.
Review 73:The AC was not functioning; only the heat. This may be due to the month--early November. Had to use the windows to regulate temperature
Review 74:The annex building has larger rooms and we stayed there. I cannot say enough about this hotel, including excellent location.
Review 75:When making reservations please give driving instructions how to reach the hotel. That would be very helpful.
Review 76:We had a quiet room in the back. The breakfast was good. It was nice to have a kettle in the room to heat up water for tea. From the hotel you can easily walk to the train station.
Review 77:Courteous, solicitous, multi-lingual staff; room upgrade upon arrival; large immaculate room; quiet, dignified atmosphere; comfortable, spacious lobby; card security; bountiful breakfast (included); convenient, historic location in the centro near restaurants, and an umbrella in the closet.
Review 78:Perfect location; beautiful breakfasts on the terrace; very helpful and friendly staff; free bicycles to use and the lobby drinks and food bar was a welcome bonus after a hard days shopping/sightseeing!
Review 79:Wifi was very, very poor. Every time you weren't using it for a minute or two it logged you off and you had to log in every time you came back to the hotel. Most annoying and not the sort of service you expect from a hotel of this calibre. I've had better wifi in 2 star hotels.
Review 80:Comfortable room, the availability of coffee, tea and nibbles available in the lobby all day was fabulous. Staff very helpful
Review 81:Having to leave !
Review 82:Located near the centre of the walled city. 15 mins walking to the station but taxis easy to obtain. So an ideal location for exploring Lucca itself and northern Tuscany. Very quiet, comfortable, well equipped room. Good breakfast buffet. Really helpful staff. Free soft drinks and snacks available through the day.
Review 83:The breakfast was really poor and the breakfast room (tablecloths, etc, looked a bit shabby).
Review 84:Stayed in the tower. Extremely well designed and decorated.
Review 85:No real negatives. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Review 86:We stayed in a remodeled extension attached to an old tower of the original town. The room was comfortable, spacious bathroom, good wifi and with the FREE bikes it was easy to get around the town.
Review 87:Our Superior room in the Residenza Dell' Alba annex was fairly expensive and had the inconvenience of a 200m walk to the main hotel and its facilities. Breakfast was fine but fairly ordinary. The 'lounge' was pleasant but really just a small area adjacent to reception.
Review 88:This hotel is ideally located in the old town, within walking/cycling distance of everything Lucca has to offer. Our Superior room room was spacious, modern and very comfortably furnished, and there was no noise from either inside or outside the building. The kettle with provisions for tea or coffee in the room was welcome, and the free all-day self-service snack bar was appreciated. A real bonus was the complimentary loan of bikes, and of audio guides covering the points of interest in the town. The suggested time to walk the itinerary with the audio guides was two hours, but taking everything in at a leisurely pace we spent at least twice that long and thoroughly appreciated it. We used the bikes on a different day, and the circuit of the old town walls was especially enjoyable.
Review 89:Two minor issues which did not spoil our stay. WiFi was subject not totally reliable..hotels router worked, fine, but issues with ISP service provision. Found it strange that a hotel of that quality did not provide properly made coffee at breakfast, expecting guests and staff to use a machine.
Review 90:Suite was splt level, with ample facilities on both floors. Large comfortable bed, ample towels, good quality fixtures and fittings. Breakfast excellent.
Review 91:Only 2 out of 5 jets in the bubble bath worked. Shower tiles were not very clean. Room is great, but does not completely justify the steep price.
Review 92:Luxurious and extremely spacious. Excellent location. Lots of complimentary services (e.g. bathrobes, bicycles, snack buffet). Great atmosphere in the room and hotel. Very friendly staff.
Review 93:No faults to comment on.
Review 94:Quality fittings in apartment. Friendly, helpful staff. Clean and quiet in great location. Breakfast selection was ample. Cycles available for guests at no extra cost and unlimited time.
Review 95:We stayed in the Residence Building and the shower didn't have any walls, so the bathroom floor was flooded and potentially dangerous by being very slippery.
Review 96:The location was perfect: just inside the wall and away from the noise. The buffet breakfast served on a rooftop deck had a very nice selection to choice from. Martina at the front desk was helpful and a pleasure to talk with.
Review 97:Very nice hotel in an excellent location.staff is very helpfull and kind.the hotel also owns two or three restaurants close by we ate at one of them twice and the food was very good.coffe ,soft drinks ans snacks are free all day and also bicycles.Hotel has parking and if you find it difficult to park they will assist you.Lucca is a beautiful city one of our favorite.
Review 98:We were disappointed to be put in the nearby residence building rather than in the main hotel building. We were assured rooms in the Residence were even better and newer but don't know if this was true or not. Certainly, our room was lovely but our request to be located in main building was brushed aside just a bit impolitely.
Review 99:Location great for exploring Lucca on foot. Convenient parking in hotel garage for €15 per night. Breakfast excellent and lots of freebie nibbles in the room and main reception area. Newspapers available at breakfast.
Review 100:Tranquil location but very convenient for the city and walls. Very helpful staff.bicycles in good condition but lack bells! Buffet breakfast was adequate but nothing special and the scrambled egg was always dried up!Room was good size, comfortable bed and plenty of wardrobe space, but no hooks on bathroom or bedroom doors. For us, a great choice.
Review 101:My partner and I booked this hotel just hours before we arrived inLucca. It looked ok on the website, in need of somewhere to stayurgently we took a chance and what a fine chance it was! We were warmlywelcomed, even at 8.30pm. Our room was in the newly refurbished buildingacross the street and we were wowed when we opened our door. There werebikes available for use by guests, they came with an audio guide whichgave an insightful tour of the city. Will definitely return again!
Review 102:No kettle in room. Would have preferred to be in Hotel and not in Annexe
Review 103:Receptionists were good although we could not get hob in bedroom to work and night receptionist a bit grumpy.
Review 104:Convenient location inside wall with parking available (for extra fee). Could walk to anywhere in city. Hotel amenities and services were excellent. "Superior" room was spacious, bath was large enough and well appointed.
Review 105:Nothing to not like
Review 106:The location if the hotel is perfect just by the wall and on the border of the town so nice and quiet. The hotel reception is very stylish and amazingly they give you free drinks and apperitivo in the lobby every day with an amazing selection of drinks. In addition the hotel has an outstanding breakfast in a beautiful gardened room. Outside on a balcony is a great jacuzzi available for guests any time. The hotel provide you free bikes to explore the city any time. It was the nicest place I have stayed in Italy and I hope to go back one day
Review 107:Parking available but any low slung car may not make entrance otherwise normal cars e_xce Lent.
Review 108:Excellent location ,rooms, service, condiments available, bikes, generally made visiting luccaa pleasure
Review 109:Breakfast could be better. Especially the bread. It was a little dry.
Review 110:The location is perfect within the walls of the old city. The staff is friendly. The room was nice and clean.
Review 111:We had a small room which was big enough for a one night stay but the bathroom was so tiny anyone who was overweight would struggle to use it. Remodel with a wet room would be a good idea. Price was higher than some other hotel we stayed in with bigger rooms. Bed was hard for a side sleeper but so far all the hotels have had hard beds
Review 112:The pool and garden was very relaxing and well equipped with comfortable sun beds and bar service. Internet worked well, British newspaper, CNN on TV and breakfast was good We enjoyed using the hotel bikes to cycle along the ocean front too.. Staff were helpful.
Review 113:The location is handy if you are arriving by car and after your bags are unloaded, a porter parks the car for you. The breakfasts were plentiful with lots of variety. The hotel offers free bikes that we used two days in a row to ride around up on the wall and all through the old city.
Review 114:It needs a few more staff "on the ground".The hotel is not wheelchair friendly. The staff at breakfast time were clock watching. ..but the reception staff and general assistant were excellent
Review 115:We stayed here with 2 friends as part of 5 day Tuscan break. The new part of the hotel is modern and quiet, but a long way from the main amenities. The staff were friendly but not very visible. Montaoine is a lovely village
Review 116:nothing
Review 117:Very easy to walk to all attractions and shopping from this hotel. Bikes are available complimentary at reception. Breakfast selection was wide and fresh. Room basic but very comfortable. Very quiet location - no traffic noise.
Review 118:Location was terrific and easy to get to even though within the walls. Free access to bikes. Free access to drinks and snacks most of the day. Lovely breakfast.
Review 119:They should continue to invest in the hotel to keep up wit 4 star.
Review 120:Family owned hotel with very pleasant and helpfull staff. Free drinks and snacks in the lobby is typical for this hotel and management. Their guest must feel welcome and pleasant. Parking facilities at the hotel an important feature within the walls of this historic city.
Review 121:Getting there was difficult because it an old walled city and the sat nave was directing us badly . We had to park the car . When we called Paolo son of the owner ,was very very helpful and even rang us back on out US phone to try and help us You should try and include a bit more in formatting in your booking confirmation as to how to get there inside the walls of these old towns the same thing happened us in Sienna .
Review 122:The staff were fantastic . Very helpful. The terrace for breakfast was great . Location great . Great value for money a lovely hotel.
Review 123:Wi-fi was playing up so only available in the foyer reception area but couldn't be helped
Review 124:Location and staff were extremely helpful. Breakfast was good and rooms very comfortable and clean
Review 125:Very good wifi reception. Car parking is available (costs 15 euros per day) Excellent base for exploring Lucca and Tuscany in general. Free snacks and drinks are provided from 11am to 7pm. This includes coffee/tea, soft drinks, beer, biscuits etc. Was really impressed that this was available free of charge!
Review 126:Wifi was poor and could never sign on.
Review 127:We had a great 1 night stay here. The staff were super friendly and the hotel is very nice and clean. They had a great breakfast. The location is perfect for exploring Lucca. Highly recommend this place.
Review 128:the staff/management were very accomodating and nice, breakfast was extensive and good and the location was perfect. Also really liked the free buffet of drinks and food during the day. Well managed and very clean and beautiful.
