Reviews for Castello Vicchiomaggio
Review 1:The kitchen closes most nights unless there is an event, so plan on bringing your own food or going into town at Greve to get some.
Review 2:The staff were very nice and drove us to the top and bottom of the hill to catch the bus. The views were great from the garden for sunset.
Review 3:Few on-site amenities. Lacks the sort of personalized type of service you expect from this sort of stay. You must have a car.
Review 4:Wonderful setting and beautiful property. Room was nice size, modern bathroom. Very romantic for couples.
Review 5:the staff was not friendly. I would say along. And there is no one after 6 pm there at all. No luggage assistance either. Limited restaurant hours (3 days per week).
Review 6:This was an amazing location with beautiful views. Our room was spacious.
Review 7:Our 2 bedroom unit at times had a definite odor in the living room area that was probably from the sewer lines or a holding tank within close proximity; not pleasant. We did not bring this up with management. On one of our 3 night's stay a member of our group was ill and asked the cleaning staff to forego cleaning the room where he was resting. They left without cleaning the rest of the unit and the other bedroom. When I brought this to the attention of the owner, he stated that it was probably just a matter of miscommunication and dismissed it without even a slight apology.
Review 8:Beautiful location. Good wine tour and excellent meal. The general staff were very pleasant and accommodating.
Review 9:They have served a dinner for 200 people the night we have stayed there but have told us that their kitchen is closed on that day. When we have asked for some food we were told that they can make us a sandwich
Review 10:Nice property with spacious rooms and beautiful surroundings
Review 11:Just to be aware that in the evening when there is no organized dinner there is no food or snacks available. So either you need to go to the closest city or bring with you.
Review 12:Amazing views over the Tuscan hills. The pool is breathtaking. Friendly staff and good instructions on what you can do around the castle.
Review 13:Too many interruptions from regular visits from coach loads of people for wine-tasting activities. Access to castle not really suitable for coaches leading to dangerous manoeuvring at night when meeting a coach coming the other way. The access road, although tarmac, is narrow, steep and has a sharp drop on one side.
Review 14:Very good accommodation with typical views of Chianti countryside. Very good breakfast. Efficient air-con, which was very necessary this year. Staff much more friendly than they were on our last visit 20 years ago.
Review 15:If arriving on Sunday, please note the restaurant isn't open Sunday evening, didn't matter to us but worth noting. Having to leave & not being able to stop longer.
Review 16:Marvelous, superb location if you want to get away from it all. You know your in Tuscany staying here, what an experience! Had a great evening on their wine tasting & tour of the cellars etc plus 4 course meal. Superb!
Review 17:That we were not staying in the Castle. Dinner when it is served in the evening is amazing. It is a shame they do not have dinner throughout the entire weekend? As we had friends meet up there on the Saturday, but we had to go to Greve for dinner which was a bit inconvenient
Review 18:It was a magical setting. Really beautiful. The lunch and dinner we had were truly delicious. We would have preferred to have stayed the the castle. We were a party of 5, 2 adults and 3 children and we were in the annex, which was lovely, but I was really going for the whole castle experience. We booked in for 3 nights. However, in saying that, it was an extremely hot summer and we had a/c in the annex, but I believe there is no A/c in the castle but the ceilings are very high.
Review 19:If I have to find something then not having drinks served at pool or at least a vending machine would have been good.
Review 20:Beautiful venue, great pool and surrounds. Meal option was good value for money especially with the wine.
Review 21:Lots of mosquitoes in the evening, no aircon in room with a small fan (even though it was cooling at night)
Review 22:The infinite pool was fantastic, staff was friendly
Review 23:In between meals it was not possible to order coffee or anything to eat if you needed something, but otherwise, it was great.
Review 24:The staff were friendly, the views were amazing, and great location.
Review 25:Wifi connection was not functioning very well.
Review 26:Excellent location in the beautiful hills of Tuscany. The pool was marvelous and the Monday dinner banquet high class. Very nice personell. Top class!
Review 27:Lady at check in was more than unpleasant. Generally stuff was not friendly or client oriented. Breakfast was really not fitting to 4stars or the price. Quality of room and pool was good through. Having been to Tuscany three times and always traveling for two weeks this one fits to the lower bottom of our list.
Review 28:The Rococo suite in the castle was gorgeous however it would have been great to have air conditioning given the hot temps that Italy was experiencing during our visit. Our room was around 28 degrees Celsius at its coolest during our stay so some type of plug in fan would have helped a great deal to keep the air moving. The mattress was a little hard - perhaps providing more pillows would help with comfort level. The breakfast was very simple and again some type of fan would have helped make the breakfast room feel a little cooler. Wifi worked the best at the pool.
Review 29:The entire property is simply gorgeous!!! Views of the vineyards and surrounding valleys. Beautiful infinity pool, well kept gardens, clean rooms. Not too far of a drive from other towns for restaurants and shopping.
Review 30:It was very hard to get around without a car at this location and the restaurant was expensive and not always open. Rooms were very old and need updating. Wi-fi was terrible.
Review 31:Beautiful, rustic scenery with luscious gardens and long vineyards. The staff was very accommodating and the infinity pool was a nice surprise and something to do during the day.
Review 32:They closed the pool in the middle of the afternoon on Monday for two hours and it was painful to wait for the next swim.
Review 33:The location is stunning and the pool fantastic!! Giotto apartment is very comfortable and convenient for a family with small and old children.
Review 34:Showers were too short to stand up in, the awesome pool closes at 7:00 pm, and the castle/manor facility caters to tours, weddings and other party events for groups not staying at Viccio. Thus you share or are restricted in the use of the facility, i.e., a private "corporate" outside party with band was held on Saturday night until midnight. You could not go to sleep nor use the upper court yard area. The compensation was we received free drinks outside our building until the event ended.
Review 35:Other friendly travelers and an excellent facility in a tremendous location.
Review 36:It was a nice and beautiful place to stay but our room did not have acand I did not sleep very well - it was waaaaay to hot. Also, it is anapartement but there is a note in the kitchen stating that if you donot clean it perfectly every day you will be charged an additionalcleansing fee of 35 € each time (so we did not use it). The castle isperfect for a one night stay and is very beautiful but I stayed 3nights and felt claustrophobic. Also, no wi-fi in room and wi-fi incommon areas very slow.
Review 37:Beautiful place, good location, nice staff, great wine tour
Review 38:Everything about our stay was perfect! From the view, to the wine, to the room, and the olive oil soaps & shampoo! The food was absolutely amazing, and the pianist/ singer/ waiter is unbelievable! If you are in the Chianti area you must stop at this vineyars!
Review 39:The bed was not comfy, air conditioning didn't work The one bedroom apartment is too big and a bit old, no balcony
Review 40:The location The breakfast The pool
Review 41:Don't come if you don't have a car! You have to walk 25 minutes to the bus which doesn't go that often - or order a cab that is quite expensive. There are no cozy walking trails in the immediate surroundings, and the vineyards have signs saying "keep out". No wifi in the room.
Review 42:It's a beautiful old castle on the top of the hill overlooking vineyards. The swimming pool has amazing views as well. The staff was helpful and drove us up the hill when we arrived with the bus. They also got us great vegetarian food from the restaurant after closing hours. Probably best for families.
Review 43:Limited kitchen facilities for self catering.
Review 44:Fantastic location for touring the area. Lovely scenery and views of the countryside. Historic property with large tastefully renovated rooms. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and evening meals were very good.
Review 45:1) no wifi in the room even for extra charge 2) as I understood there is no security at night only cameras.
Review 46:Perfect location, views are like from the post card. Big room with kitchen! Sweeming pool was good.
Review 47:Wifi reception can be quite poor in the room.
Review 48:Loved the location. The Castle is on a hill so you have some amazing views. The Mon night dinner they offer is great and worth it! Room was extremely spacious and well styled
Review 49:Resturant is only open a few nights a week. Pool was closed even though it was 25 C outside. Mediocre breakfast.
Review 50:Incresible property with amazing views. Got a very large room with living room and dining places for 12 people. Very friendly staff. Reasonably priced for what you're getting.
Review 51:The breakfast could be better.
Review 52:The view was outstanding, the room was exceptional (we stayed in the new annex which was very modern), and the castle was beautiful. The movie Romeo & Juliet was filmed in the courtyard!
Review 53:We paid for the superior apartment and we received a very small room without a table, with only one chair, no hangers, no chest of drawers and tiny bathroom without a mirror. After long and hard discussion with personnel, who was not willing to cooperate, we could finally change for a big room with all facilities. The bigger room was cheaper that our initial room, however we did not receive any refund and had to pay the higher price for the whole stay. Breakfast was also with very small choice and low standard, for example there was instant coffee.
Review 54:Great location and view, very clean.
Review 55:A very memorable evening when we participated in the special dinner for the grape harvest. Hospitality, food entertainment and ambiance were oustanding. Altogether a very good stay at this Castello. Would definitely return
Review 56:Very buggy outside and inside the rooms with no drink or food service available except in a limited basis
Review 57:Lived the people, views and service- the dinner on Monday and Thursday nights with Marco on the piano was fabulous!
Review 58:Breakfast - had to wait for some of the cooked choices seemed understaffed.
Review 59:The location was outstanding. Room was comfortable and tasteful. Lovely swimming pool.
Review 60:This Castello is a beautifullly renovated Renaissance building , large and Imposing in its formal areas and spacious and comfortable in its bedrooms . It operates within a working vineyard and its chianti wines are stunning . Great food
Review 61:Nothing to complain about, this is what dreams are made of.
Review 62:Spectacular views, idyllic setting, huge room with vaulted ceilings and all of the comforts, Infiniti pool, near everything in Greve in Chianti, fantastic banquet dinner on Monday night in the ballroom with Marco singing and playing the piano, great wine, plentiful breakfast. What else could you ask for? This is perfection.
Review 63:No fridge in rooms, unable to dine there as they have lots of functions on all the time it seems. Must have car to get into village for meals. Never really saw staff.
Review 64:Everywhere you looked was like a post card, beautiful surrounds & lovely old castle gardens delightful.
Review 65:Wifi only available in garden, not in room. Restaurant not open every night which means you have to drive into town for meals.
Review 66:Despite the older style rooms (it is a castle after all) our stay was very pleasant indeed. The location on top of a Chianti mountain is unrivalled and the grounds lend themselves to 360degree panoramic views. The castle is beautiful, the staff friendly and rooms clean and comfortable. Would recommend.
Review 67:We stayed in La Canonica. Very comfortable and well furnished. Gardens were beautiful along with the fantastic views. The pool was ideal. Very relaxing grounds with lots of sitting areas to unwind with a glass of wine. We did the wine tour and lunch. Worth the value and convenience. Breakfasts were substantial and delicious. Drove to the small town center each night for dinner. Staff was very helpful and kind. Wonderful experience overall. Would highly recommend.
Review 68:It has no restaurant only on Monday & Thursday nights, large room with small bed & shower with no shower curtain
Review 69:Good breakfast and swimming pool
Review 70:Bedroom and bathroom lack certain basic amenities e.g. Towel rack, hook for a robe, insufficient drawer and closet space, no tissues provided, no shelf for toiletries and cosmetics. Simple matters which require a little more attention to detail.
Review 71:Outstanding view, very relaxing, opportunity to unwind in chianti countryside, excellent pool, privacy, historic and unusual buildings, sense of history, proximity to the charming village of Greve.
Review 72:It would be great if this hotel was adult- only hotel. Also, would be nice to have a bar and a restaurant that is open throughout the day, every day.
Review 73:One of the best hotels in Tuscany, close proximity to Greve, stunning views, amazing infinity pool
Review 74:The fact that the restaurant was closed while we were there but since we knew in advance we brought food from Florence and ate in the garden. It was beautiful.
Review 75:The entire estate is magical. The pool is overlooking a spectacular view. The room was beautifully decorated. Our room had a view over the vineyards which breathtaking. Thebreakfast buffet was excellent.
Review 76:Wish the restaurant was open more days.

Review 85:No public areas, no bar very little outdoor furniture, not a friendly place
Review 86:Mosquitoes are a big problem

Review 100:bathroom could be better (shower)
Review 101:swimming pool breakfast staff cloes to Florence/siena
Review 102:Pool Accommodation Location
Review 103:Internet access in the satellite building was patchy.
Review 104:Wonderful location quintessential Tuscan views. This setting is a version of paradise.
Review 105:Staff was very, very helpful. Many options and activities on the property itself. Amazing views. Amazing infinity pool. Great wine. Clean rooms.
Review 106:Lack of atmosphere, could be so much more if they maintain a bar
Review 107:Beautiful building in amazing surroundings
Review 108:Wine tasting is chaged even for guests and lack of turístic activities in the castle. Wifi is slow.
Review 109:Very nice room and view. Dinner on thursday with piano singer is great!
Review 110:The ambiance in the restaurant was lacking, they should make more use of the beautiful grounds for al fresco dining
Review 111:Bedroom was newly decorated, spacious and very well appointed. Food very good. Grounds beautiful
Review 112:The pool wasn't opening until 3 days after we left
Review 113:The gardens are perfect to relax in, drink some wine and watch the sun set over the hills of the Chianti region.
Review 114:The town of Greve and surrounding towns lovely with all that is needed. Friendly, not over touristy, beautiful scenery. The Castello Vicchiomaggio has great food and wine.
Review 115:Bed was uncomfortable....mattress extremely hard. The hotel doesn't offer dinner every night.
Review 116:Location and setting was great. We did the wine tour with dinner-which was well worth the money and was excellent from beginning to end. Great food, great entertainment and great company with fellow guests.
Review 117:Restaurant not open most days, so need to drive to eat. A kitchen was part of the suite but we were not allowed to use it
Review 118:Excellent location and value.
Review 119:Wifi did not work in the room. Check-out until 10am.
Review 120:Went for lunch + wine tasting and stayed overnight, it was amazing. Food was very good, wine was excellent, the visit of the cellars and description of the wine making process really interesting. In the beginning of November, it was peaceful. The room (bedroom + living room with kitchenette) was large, nice, clean and had a lovely view of the Tuscan hills.
Review 121:There are not restaurant in evening. Nobody says anything in husband's birthday, not even a small cake, nothing, but I know that they new it.
Review 122:Location, evening with Tuscany diner and vine tour..Nice building.
Review 123:1. Food at their resturant was below my expectation. 2. Instant coffee as self served coffee for the rooms and breakfast. (a serious issue)
Review 124:1. Rooms are clean and bed is comfy. 2. Great view from our room and everywhere around the property. 3. Easy to find. 4. Free Wi-Fi is fast and easy to connect to. 5. Easy access to Greve city center and many winery nearby
Review 125:It is relatively miner but the sink stopper was malfunctioning and the water emptied before shaving was completed.
Review 126:The setting of the castle was marvelous with a fantastic view of the vineyards and the valley. The dinners and the optional wine tasting were excellent. The headwaiter was multitalented and could play the grand piano and sing very well. everyone was very helpful and friendly.
Review 127:Limited reception hours makes check-in and requests for basics like restaurant reservations inconvenient, as this establishment is run more like a part-time B&B than a hotel. Breakfast hours are also limited (8:15-9:30), which may be inconvenient for early and late risers. When taking a shower, beware that a lot of water leaks out of the shower door.
Review 128:Beautiful views of the Tuscan hills and vineyards from the hotel room. The superior room we stayed in was very quiet and the bed is comfortable. There are a good selection of restaurants in nearby Greves-in-Chianti (5 minute drive from the hotel).
Review 129:The restaurant was closed to accommodate a tour bus. However, we ate inGreve and had a great meal there.
Review 130:The room was beautiful, large and a gorgeous view.
