Villa Vignamaggio

Villa Vignamaggio descritpion
Villa Vignamaggio sells fast on our site. Used as the set for famous costume movies and the supposed birthplace of Mona Lisa, Vignamaggio offers unique accommodations in the Tuscan countryside.
One of the oldest wine estates in the Chianti Classico region, Vignamaggio is made up of a 14th-century Renaissance villa where rooms and suites are located, surrounded by beautiful Italian gardens. The restored farm buildings scattered around the grounds are now home to luxurious apartments.
Vignamaggio's grounds feature everything you could ask for from a vacation in the Tuscan countryside. Enjoy a game of tennis, have a refreshing swim in one of the outdoor pools or go horseback riding through the woods. Bikes are available free of charge and kids have their own playground.
Vignamaggio has a spa center, where you can use the Turkish baths free of charge. The hotel has also its own gym which comes complete with a hot tub. Go for walks down to the river past vineyards and olive groves or just sunbathe on a terrace.
Shoot some pool in the game room indoors, play ping-pong or just relax with a cup of tea in one of the historic sitting rooms. In Vignamaggio's common areas you can enjoy complimentary hot drinks and snacks all day long.
A stay at Vignamaggio wouldn't be complete without tasting the excellent wine produced on site. Guided tours of the gardens, cellars and museum are run daily and you can taste wine and oil free of charge at the shop. There is also a charming wine bar which overlooks the vineyards.
Taste genuine Tuscan cuisine at Vignamaggio's restaurant or try your hand at cooking yourself with one of the cooking classes which can be organized for you.

Reviews for Villa Vignamaggio
Review 1:The restuarant did not serve a nice variety of food. The salad although fresh was bland. The food was a signature meal and for us who stayed there was really limited. Room service with basic traditional meals would be great.
Review 2:We liked the scenery and the beautiful villa and it's locality in tuscana hills.
Review 3:Apparently all resorts (1-5 star all the same) turn off the AC once the fall season kicks in. They only have the option for heat or AC not both at the same time. Therefore, our room was very warm. We are New Yorkers so we knew to turn off the radiators. Opening the windows would welcome mosquitos so we slept on top of the sheets that night. Everything else was very nice. I'd stay there again and ship a box fan!
Review 4:The large property was really beautiful and the view was amazing. Check in was very smooth and our room was very spacious. We opted for the wine tasting dinner and had a wonderful meal. The breakfast was very nice and one of the best we had throughout our stay in Italy. Aside from the room being hot and stuffy due to the AC system being turned off already for the season, the accommodations were very nice and as pictured.
Review 5:This has to be one of the most beautiful places to stay anywhere. What a fairy tale few days. The nearby town of Greve was delightful and everyone at Villa Vignamaggio was wonderful. The tour and sunset dinner was magical. The staff helped us coordinate a horse back ride at a nearby farm, too. We are a mature couple, but this would be the perfect place for a honeymoon.
Review 6:The only thing to be improved would be the Wifi signal but only a minor detail
Review 7:Absolutely amazing Villa and grounds! Soo romantic my boyfriend proposed to me on one of the nature walks :) The apartment we stayed in was fabulous and dinner in the restaurant was delicious. Will definitely be back for a longer stay!
Review 8:Air conditioning in the living area of the apartment would have been nice.
Review 9:Beautiful setting and they really paid attention to every detail throughout the property. We really felt that the staff enjoyed serving us and made the stay very comfortable.
Review 10:I've stAyed here twice and have felt both times there is not enough info given in check in on facilities you're kind of left to find out things yourselves We arrived in the middle of a big wedding and were not made welcome when asking about eating in the hotel the first night seemed luke it would be a problem to fit us in so given conflicting info from front desk so we just headed into greve Otherwise cant reallly fault apart from very very slow WIFI and a very big checkout bill
Review 11:The place is beautiful location is gorgeous food very good all locally produced swimming pool area very tranquil
Review 12:Beautiful location and facilities. We loved out two apartments and the restaurant setting is lovely. We were sad to leave. Our 3 boys felt like it was home away from home and enjoyed the pool. Great base to explore from and watch the Much Ado about Nothing DVD to see the beautiful gardens in action!
Review 13:No attentive staffs, very minimum staffs. I was expecting more personalized service since this is not many rooms. There was electrical shortcut when I stayed there.
Review 14:Winery tour and dinner is nice. Garden is beautiful
Review 15:Our bed was not comfortable, however my kids had a comfortable bed. Wifi did not work inside bedroom and we had to go out of the room for it to work.
Review 16:Beautiful grounds. Great views. Good location. Very clean.
Review 17:Parking up on arrival was confusing, and it was cumbersome to get in/out with having to open the gate, but I believe it was a temporary situation. One of the times we got back to the property a staff member asked us for our room key right after we parked, without telling us why (made us feel like we did something wrong or she thought we were intruders), then gave it back a little later, with absolutely no explanation. Overall, staff wasn't overly friendly, but was fine.
Review 18:Beautiful property with gorgeous views. We'd definitely go back and stay longer.
Review 19:I would have preferred an adult only pool or area, it was hard to get peace and quiet (as a parent trying to get away from it all).
Review 20:Fabulous views, beautiful property. Very well equipped (gym etc). Love the little touches of coffee, fruit and vin santo.
Review 21:Children park is virtually non-existent and quite run down. They didn't inform us about the free cycle that is provided so we missed that. Wish could stay longer.
Review 22:We stayed in a 1bhk which was quite comfortable. The tour of the winery is good and history of the place is interesting. Great breakfast with variety of options and good food.
Review 23:No umbrellas at pool, no service by pools; pool not cleaned daily; breakfast extra and not worth 14€;
Review 24:Glorious gardens, the cuckoos and fireflies, the views,
Review 25:The one problem here is that the restaurant was slightly underwhelming. Over priced for the quality. We recommend doing a big food shop in Greve before hand if you are staying in one of the apartments with a kitchenette, as there are no alternative restaurants within reasonable walking distance.
Review 26:Great accommodation, beautiful buildings, gardens, pools and views. One of the most amazing places you will ever stay!
Review 27:Couldn't get the free wi-fi working, but at this place you should probably put the phone away anyway.
Review 28:A wonderful stay in a truly beautiful location. We enjoyed a glass of Chianti with Bistecca alla Fiorentina at the restaurant - possibly the best steak we have ever had!!
Review 29:The room we booked at first was not good. They need to upgrade the interiors of all rooms for the price being charged. The room we booked was a standard room, but it was not good. We upgraded to one of the suites for a modest upcharge and were much happier.
Review 30:The location and view are gorgeous- our room was great after we upgraded.
Review 31:Leaving
Review 32:We stayed for only 2 nights and really wish we had longer. The views are incredible as are the villa and its grounds. The food is delicious and so fresh as they use vegetables and herbs grown on the grounds. We went in May and it is still fairly quiet around the time - we were told it gets much busier from June to September. We did the wine tour with a tasting dinner and would definatly recommend. Loved this place and will return!
Review 33:Naturally the wine is paramount here. But range of dining on offer, let's it down. They could be a little more adventurous.
Review 34:The amazing scenery, idyllic location, truly magical visit.
Review 35:The gardens, the pool, the tennis court, the rooms, the staff, and most of all the views. Everything about this stay was fantastic. Giovanna was our guide for a wine and food tasting and tour--she was wonderful!
Review 36:By far the loveliest place I have ever stayed. Beautiful location in Tuscany, comfortable and charming rooms, excellent staff. Our sunset dinner and tour with Giovanna was the highlight of our trip to Italy.
Review 37:Yes Vignamaggio's restaurant is a bit pricey but it is very good and convenient. Especially when you arrive the first evening and you are tired to travel. You need to make a reservation and they close the kitchen at 9:30 pm. They have buffet breakfast for 14 Euros. Very good and you are on an amazing site! Martin & Sabrina
Review 38:The birthplace of Mona Lisa is a restful Villa with beautiful views, amazing gardens, warm rustic mansion with old buildings, and smiling people. The launch pad to all you destinations in Chianti: Sienna, Firenze, Cortona, Montepulciano, Castillo, Radda, etc. The Greve village is 7 minutes away and very nice. Lots if activity in the Public Place. They also have a wine festival in Greve at the beginning of September where over 300 producers offer their wines for tasting. Overall we loved it so much we extended our stay to 5 days instead of 3. Very relaxing. Like the Italians always say... Tutte Bene!!!
Review 39:Nothing, we are ready to go back anytime;)
Review 40:Wine tasting with a dinner is a must! The villa is gorgeous and the surrounding area is so beautiful with vineyards and olive trees . Very quiet
Review 41:It's not very convenient to get to if you don't drive. 10~15 minutes drive to the closest town, Greve. Bus hours are poor. Not a good value for money if you plan to spend your time out visiting the wineries.
Review 42:We spent three nights here. It is a villa with history. Wonderful seeting. Has its own vineyards and winery. It is a big compound, can simply stroll and explore the villa on your own. There are two pools. One of them has a magnificent view of the valley. Unfortunately, the water is too cold for a swim. (Weather is poor when we visited in september 2014). The guided wine tour with dinner is terrific. One of the best meals I had for the trip. Room is clean and unique. Good pick if you just want to spend your time in the villa.
Review 43:Complimentary wine, olive oil and fruit in the rooms. Also freshly brewed coffee outside the rooms, on a table, with biscuits, every day. Comfortable bed. Nice shower. Great view.
Review 44:Breakfast was not included and a bit expensive for what you got, other hotels offered the same or better assortment at no charge. But the center of town is a short drive away.
Review 45:This was just a perfect place. Beautiful architecture with stunning views. Rooms were very large, quaint and clean. Their wine tour with dinner is a must, food was divine and their reserve chianti is a must. Staff was friendly.
Review 46:Great Villa apartment. 53 sq.mtrs. Immaculately cleaned everyday. Wonderful antique rustic furniture. Very spacious, four-poster bedroom. Large bathroom. Small but useful kitchenette. Lovely outside patio area with chairs and table and wonderful views over the Tuscan countryside. Great atmosphere wandering around the Villa where they filmed 'Much Ado About Nothing' in 1993. Great, large swimming pool. Not cheap but worth it! Wouldn't stay anywhere else in the area.
Review 47:the fact that the reception only functioned from 9am -7pm each day so if there was a problem no one could help you. This was an issue for us on two nights -the air conditioning failed the first night and after a thunder storm the power in the place we were staying failed one evening and it was pitch black except for emergency lights-it did not come on until next morning late. I spoke to Carla-the general manager, who was reluctant to speak to us and apparently the justification is that it is an agroturismo not a hotel! I refused to pay for the two nights as the establishment had made no attempt to have anyone there to sort out the problems! I have never stayed in any hotel that was like this. The renaissance buildings do not compensate you for the discomforts! The ordinary staff are expected to sort out the problems but can't ! it was not a great experience and the hype relating to Mona Lisa is overplayed.
Review 48:the grounds and the views
Review 49:Nothing, everything great!!!
Review 50:Location, nature, hotel facilities, spacious apartments, normal prices, gardens, pools, excellent, helpful staff and really amazing terrace restaurant with excellent Tuscan tastes!!!! Congrats!!!
Review 51:Wow, this place is unbelievable! The gardens, the food, the wine, the setting. I can't say enough about it. This is the house where the Mona Lisa model grew up. You must visit this, even if you don't stay here. Go to a wine tasting/dinner. But I recommend staying here.
Review 52:Stunning views, beautiful grounds, amazing breakfasts, so relaxing!
Review 53:It's not easy to find the réception and our room.
Review 54:The views from this property can not be beat. Friendly staff and loved the wine tasting on property
Review 55:It's beautiful there, location is amazing!
Review 56:Nothing
Review 57:Beautiful and staff was amazing
Review 58:The TV didn't work on wifi
Review 59:The view, the surroundings, the location !
Review 60:the location, character and views of the property were great. Fantastic facilities to enjoy after a long day of wine tasting
Review 61:The staff were there for any help you needed, they arranged for a cooking class for us at the last minute even though they had no one else
Review 62:Nothing. The matress may be a little softer.
Review 63:The beauty of the gardens and the surroundings. The breakfast in the garden, under the sun
Review 64:Great staff and gorgeous Villa.
Review 65:jacuzzi Not in function properly
Review 66:Everything,it was a dream!
Review 67:Everything from accommodations to food
Review 68:nothing.
Review 69:food/dinner, wine tour and whole atmosphere were all great! loved the scenery and views. very calming.
Review 70:Amazing Villa Perfect food and wine
Review 71:Location was fantastic. The restaurant is very good, if a bit pricey.
Review 72:Not much walking area. At least you won't feel relax walking around. Area of pool have many insects. I stayed in one-bedroom villa. Pretty small. Only one small window can be open. No fresh air in room yet the room has unpleasant smell! No shower curtain in toilet. First hotel I chose for my vacation, but the most disappointing one.
Review 73:Attitude of the restaurant staffs are good. Food above average. Wines and olive oils may be fine to some people. We brought few bottles of them.
Review 74:everything was quite good. Our room was a little noisy though, could hear the guests in other rooms.
Review 75:It was a very relaxing stay, beautiful property. we could easily drive to all areas of Chianti region. the breakfast was excellent!
Review 76:In March the temperatures were 12C and the heating was a bit sparse.
Review 77:Everything except the weather. The staff were particularly friendly and extremely helpful. We think it is a place everyone of a romantic nature should visit at least once in their lifetime.
Review 78:Early spring meant the villa was only just re-establishing itself so eating options limited.
Review 79:Location, the gardens the decor and the sense of calm and ease with which the staff ensured a perfect stay
Review 80:Small point but it would have been great to have some English language tv....but this seems to be the case everywhere we went in Italy!
Review 81:Reception staff were very helpful and the room was great the views were amazing and it was a great place to walk around in its own right.
Review 82:The room and the grounds were incredible! I loved the history of the place and that it's a working winery and olive oil producing estate. They were harvesting olives by hand while we were enjoying a glass of wine on the patio! I wish we had stayed longer to enjoy the grounds, pool and exercise room.
Review 83:The breakfast should have been included in the price and the well being centre (which was only partly functioning) was a stroll down the road and some distance from the Villa.
Review 84:We stayed at the Villa to celebrate my wife's birthday. Prior to the visit I called the Villa and explained our celebration and requested the best room available for the rate paid. To their great credit we found ourselves upgraded to a beautiful suite with a complimentary bottle of chianti classico and a happy birthday note. However it was late November and there was only one other couple staying. Beautiful and authentic Tuscan Villa and if you are a fan of the 1993 film "Much Ado About Nothing" you will not be disappointed.
Review 85:Breakfast was only an hour and expensive for the spread. The spa facilities closed at 17:00 even though check in was at 15:00....so we missed out.
Review 86:Excellent staff, from booking to check out. Amazing location and beautiful rooms.
Review 87:Very beautiful and relaxing surroundings; Recommended horse-riding activity was very enjoyable; Excellent food (dinner) at the villa's restaurant.
Review 88:We felt that when booking online, there needs to be clarity about the rooms you are booking, as there were 3 farm houses where the rooms are located, and only a few suites in the actual Villa can be booked.
Review 89:I was in awe of the depth of history and tranquillity of the location. The tour given by a member of staff was fabulous right down to the fine details.
Review 90:What a room! What a view! Comfort, luxury, view, privacy, etc... A must see! It feels good to be in the same place that Monna Lisa and Leonardo da Vinci have been.
Review 91:Service far from apartment. Trouble with gate one night leaving and not able to contact front desk.
Review 92:Apartment away from villa but close to breakfast. Easy Parking. Breakfast good.
Review 93:Awesome .............We loved every minute of it. The Hotel, CountrySide Views of the Vineyards, Wine Tour, Service, and food were allamazing! We will definitely be back !
Review 94:Nothing, it was all excellent, couldn't fault with any aspect of our stay.
Review 95:It has a very relaxing atmosphere and is the ideal place to get away for a few days and simply relax and enjoy. We booked a wine tour with lunch which was a delightful way to spend a couple of hours. It has stunning views and is a great location to visit Chianti with the town of Greve 10 minutes away.
Review 96:This is my third stay. It was wonderful, romantic and very scenic. I loved our little apartment in the farmhouse Casolese and didn't mind the 10 minute walk to the villa. The staff were efficient but a little unforgiving when we were late to check in. Sometimes in cannot be helped if the traffic is bad. The food and service at the restaurant was perfect and as long as you have car, Vignamaggio is a great retreat after driving around the little towns in the Tuscan countryside. I have been in love with this place for 12 years and hope to return soon.
Review 97:I didn't like the fact that breakfast was not included. For the amount we paid, it should be part of the package. I also did not like so much the general detachment of the guests who are staying there. They seem so aloof and do not really want to talk or even just look at other guests. The fact that you cannot check in before 3 PM is also a turn off.
Review 98:Love the character of the place. It's an amazing villa surrounded by the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. It has so much history and culture. I also love the cottage that we rented. I think it's better than the villa because it's separated from the main building.
Review 99:No local taxis and private cars expensive If you don't have car, you are limited to the venue restaurant which, although has great food is a bit pricey.
Review 100:Food was amazing Views Setting Friendly staff Wines Upgrade on arrival My favourite film was shot here.
Review 101:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 102:There is a stunning view everywhere you turn even at breakfast just sitting out on the terrace. It has a very calming atmosphere and is the ideal place to get away for a few days and simply relax. The piazza in the nearby village of Greve is a delight with several superb restaurants
Review 103:Having to leave this little place of heaven.
Review 104:The Villa is steeped in history and is like a fairytale. The views from the swimming pools over the countryside are spectacular! 5 star comfort and service.
Review 105:Lots of bugs and ants.Breakfast was not included and to get coffee was a bit of a walk.No one to assist with luggage.
Review 106:The restaurant was amazing.Excellent wine tour and great dinner with Mauria.Beautiful gardens with 2 pools and spa center.Rooms and bath were spacious and clean.
Review 107:I had to leave at the end of my trip
Review 108:Everything! Gorgeous grounds Beautiful views Peaceful environment Myfavorite pool in the world I want to live there
Review 109:We never quite got used to the narrow, winding roads up and down eachday. If you're in fear of a head on crash, you'll likely benervous a lot. The trip from sr 222 to Vignamaggio about 5 minutes.
Review 110:I must have called the receptionist a half dozen time after our arrivalfor information. Each time I received a polite and patient response. After leaving, the receptionist followed up well to make sure forgottenitems would be returned. We requested and received the apartment abovethe reception office. It is located a few minutes walk from the mainhouse which didn't use much because we were more interested in daytrips to other towns in Chianti.
Review 111:The beds were not very comfortable.
Review 112:The hotel and its grounds are wonderful! They have everything youcould want including 2 pools and a spa. Breakfast was great and worththe 10 Euro a day. The location is also great and very close to othernearby wineries.
Review 113:Absolutely amazing. Views and atmosphere were amazing. If you visit wine country it's a must.
Review 114:Only hand held shower. Poor quality towels. Not value for money compared to other properties on same vacation.
Review 115:Setting &scenery superb
Review 116:Breakfast not included, reception not very friendly
Review 117:Beautiful, peaceful setting!
Review 118:The location is lovely and the garden is beautiful. Dinner was delicious.
Review 119:somewhat expensive !
Review 120:the beauty of the villa and the garden, the surrounding Toscany hills, the gorgeous view !
Review 121:Restaurant service slow and menu lacked ambition and flair.
Review 122:Style of renovations; spacious room.
