Reviews for The Columns

Review 1:no bad experiences was very happy with this hotel

Review 2:Very pleased with this hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Check-in was very easy, rooms were spacious and comfortable with both a/c and a ceiling fan and cleanliness cannot be faulted in anyway. The lovely reception lady even took my postcards to the post office for me when I realized I had forgotten to drop by the post before I left. The hotel also has a lovely welcoming feel to it which was quite welcome.

Review 3:there is nothing, we dislike

Review 4:not just location was very good. we really liked friendly staff approach and we really enjoyed not just taste, also look of breakfast on the sun terrace. clean, pleasantly furnished room, building in nice old french colonial style, much higher standard than for 3 stars hotel

Review 5:Yoghurt at breakfast was curdled but fruit, granola and honey was delicious.

Review 6:Hotel is located one minute's walk from riverside with lots of bars and restaurants. Staff were incredibly helpful in helping us book busses and leave our luggage whilst we spent one night on rabbit island. Rooms smaller than some other large hotels but bed was the comfiest and the furniture was some of the most modern we saw. Loved it!

Review 7:Our attic room, with shower in the middle of the floor and no coffee station was not what our sister had - if you pay the same you suspect to receive the same standard.

Review 8:The location was good

Review 9:The A/C in the room did not work at all. At midnight I was sweating in my room and when I complained nothing was done.

Review 10:Location was good, staff was friendly and it was quite,

Review 11:We had problems to charge our devices because the plug connectors disrupted the current when the plug was slightly moved

Review 12:Nice atmosphere and located directly in the historic centre of the town

Review 13:if there is a disadvantage, its being 1 km from the main joint, but this should not really bother you...

Review 14:Let me stress one point, if you leave the room and take out the keycard not all electricity is shut down - you can still recharge your electronic devices. I wish more places were like that. Breakfast was good and plenty, not only staff but also other guests were pleasant.

Review 15:Wi-fi a bit iffy in rooms sometimes.

Review 16:Location, comfort. Hotel shines in a street that could use a little TLC, but that sums up Kampot in many ways - both very pretty and ragged around the edges.

Review 17:In our first room there were so many ants that came out of the sink and its area, they got to our bed as well.... So we asked to move to an ants-free room and at first it seemed like the problem was solved, but then we realized there were ants coming out of the ceiling and the air con. In addition, we couldn't really control the water temperature.. So we showered in whatever water we got.... Seems like there aren't many better options in kampot, but I'm sure you can find something cheaper for the same value.

Review 18:The staff was nice. The bed was fine. Great location.

Review 19:There were a bunch of ants crawling all over the sink, pretty much at all times.

Review 20:Great restored colonial building, great location, friendly, helpful staff.

Review 21:No pool. Bit dark to walk to at night - but that's no different to other places in Kampot and is totally safe. Bring a torch!

Review 22:Peaceful surrroundings, well designed room with modern touches, great breakfast, staff can advise on all sorts of things to do. Yummy fresh cookies!

Review 23:Very attractive and well done conversion into an hotel. Large comfortable room with all amenities. Good breakfast and excellent staff, very welcoming and friendly. Close to river and bars/restaurants.

Review 24:Nothing, a lovely place to stay

Review 25:Only one block from the riverfront, very quiet at night. Super clean, staff friendly and helpful. Good quality and quantity of breakfast.

Review 26:Terible view from window of derelict buildings 50cm from window. no phone in room no hairdryer. No safe. No choice for breakfast only eggs in 4 ways & fruit. Would class this property as 2*. No elevator.

Review 27:Only minor quibbles, but you sometimes had to wait a minute or so for the hot water in the shower to warm up. Staircase is quite steep to the upper rooms and there is no lift - but the staff are very happy to help you with luggage.

Review 28:Exceptionally helpful and genuinely friendly staff - very hard to fault the service. They booked taxis, tuk-tuks and restaurants for us and helped translate (by phone) when we needed to explain something to a non-english speaker. Comfortable room and very convenient location in a very pleasant tree-lined street. Hot water available in the sink for shaving, which for some reason you don't always get in Cambodian hotels outside major cities. We looked forward to the free a-la-carte breakfast each day. It's possible to eat inside or at a number of pleasant al fresco tables near the front entrance. Incredibly good value. Left with a very good feeling and happy memories of the the Columns. I would rate this as a 2-and-half or 3-star hotel by western standards but what they provide for this is hard to beat at an extremely reasonable price. Tip - get them to arrange a tuk-tuk to Kep (around US$20 for a trip there and back) and have the coconut crab or pepper crab at the Kimly Seafood Restaurant built over the sea front at the crab market - surly service but fantastic crab with a "flavour explosion" which my wife and I still talk about. "Khmer Root" cafe is a few kilometres from the centre of Kampot and in basic outdoor setting but fantastic Khmer food for a few dollars.

Review 29:The restaurant is a bit pricy.

Review 30:The staff is very helpful and friendly. Even served us amazing refreshing iced coffee drinks after our half-day trip to Bokor hill outside the operating hours of the restuarant/bar.

Review 31:We were in a deluxe room with very ordinary decoration. The bathroom was old and so small even the door of the shower cannot be open fully. There were not any amenities, which would be seen in a deluxe room, apart from two tooth brushes wrapped in plastic bags. Overall the hotel is definitely is not worth value for money. We requested snacks from café, but refused that it was closed a couple of hours ago so they could not serve anything.

Review 32:Not a lot! If I have to list something, the bed was a bit hard.

Review 33:The hotel manager was very helpful, organising tuk tuk to pepperfarm, and booking taxi to Kep. They have bikes you can borrow to explore the town. The manager also bakes delicious oatmeal cookies, which after a month of Cambodia/Vietnam were just what I started dreaming about! The shower was one of the best during our trip. It is in a good location to walk to restaurant or stroll past the river bank. We felt right at home here!

Review 34:Bathroom was not nice, not open like in the pictures but on older small room. Water temperature couldn't be controlled. Breakfast portions are a bit small.

Review 35:Architecture of the building, great old colonial style. It is just a 100m walk to the river-front. Friendly staff. Very clean.

Review 36:From arriving at the hotel and being greeted with friendly staff. The rooms were well presented and clean and great shower. Breakfast was also very nice. Hotel Manager was helpful and engaging. DVD's to watch from their library. Only a short walk to shops and restaurants. Highly recommended to book this place.

Review 37:Very poor breakfast. Older lady at check in did not give the impression to be welcome. Maybe just because she did not speak English. Sometimes very bad smell from bathroom.

Review 38:Nice room, well equipped Young girl at check in very friendly

Review 39:The staff are fabulous and always helpful. It's a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Kampot. I loved it and would recommend all travelers to stay there.

Review 40:Just one thing the top bed sheet had a stain on it ( only noticed on day two ) still not changed on day 3

Review 41:The staff were great and very helpful the room was lovely design the bed very comfortable I had the best sleep extra soft mattress

Review 42:The Columns offers a beautifully renovated French colonial building, tasteful decor and comfortable furnishings. The staff are incredibly helpful and happy to organise any kind of a traveller's needs very promptly. Its location is ideal being one street back from the river so you can access restaurants but be a little protected from the business. The town of Kep has a very relaxed feel and a chance to stop and rest, take a trip on the river, support the local NGO Epic Arts Cafe and get to know the locals.

Review 43:Can't think of anything

Review 44:My headline says it all. It was my first visit to Asia let alone Cambodia and it was a perfect haven from which I could start to explore this very stange and magical world

Review 45:The ambience and location were excellent. Close to the river and the room was exceptional. Oh comfortable.

Review 46:Pleasant relaxed ambience, friendly efficient and attentive staff, comfortable rooms and great foyer for lounging

Review 47:The character of the hotel is charming. The staff and management are incredibly friendly and helpful.

Review 48:Small hotel but lean and tidy

Review 49:Breakfast was not great

Review 50:The bed was extremely comfortable, lovely staff, great location!

Review 51:strange toilet room in the bedroom

Review 52:Very helpful and open manager great suggestions for activities yummy breakfast omelette

Review 53:I like the coffee, location, wifi.

Review 54:Clean comfortable hotel in great location. Staff were delightful

Review 55:A very attentive and professional staff.

Review 56:No A/C in the restaurant/lobby

Review 57:excellent overall.

Review 58:After a hot day a pool would have been ideal

Review 67:That we couldnt stay longer

Review 68:Fresh fruit breakfast Columns coffee The rooms And Tave

Review 69:Nothing (no pool).

Review 70:Nice colonial style house and interior. Very friendly staff. Good bed.

Review 71:Very little other than room at top of stairs.

Review 72:The staff especially the lovely hotel receptionist. I rang to change my booking and it was not a concern and done very efficiently... I have rated the location as good only because I was on my own and when I walked down the street at night it was not well lit... This was not a huge concern as I did not feel afraid and possibly another street. Otherwise it is close to everything if you are staying in Kampot to enjoy. I was only overnighting. Great location to the river and some really good restaurants and bars down there. This was a well run establishment and I had a lovely thick mattress!

Review 73:Virtually nothing, we did arrive home one night to find reception unmanned and unlocked with our room key out for the taking

Review 74:The staff couldn't have been more helpful and we were impressed with the decor and the central location

Review 75:Only 4 options at breakfast...with tea, coffee or juice. If you don't like yoghurt/fruit or bread&jam you're stuck eating eggs for days on end! Shutters on the windows were permanently closed so the room had no view to speak of...

Review 76:Location was great, room had all the facilities you would expect. Shower was great! Free bike hire Staff were super helpful and friendly, booking our onward travel for us.

Review 77:Nothing NOT to like....

Review 78:I just loved this place, everything from A to Z... The staff the location etc etc etc.., go stay if you want something in not so touristy area.

Review 79:Nothing to complain about :-)

Review 80:The welcoming staff, the nice atmosphere, the very good breakfast, the location, the great shower, the fast wifi, very nice room! We would definitely com back again! If you are there you should visit the nearby Restaurant Rikitikitavi, their Lok Lak was especially great!

Review 81:Nothing really, maybe the breakfast could have been a little more comprehensive. Having said that, what was on offer was very good.

Review 82:A nice, well appointed hotel, 200 metres from the river, and close to a Supermarket, for a descent bottle of red wine.

Review 83:Our three daughters weren't as happy with their room with an odour and poor shower pressure

Review 84:Wonderful, friendly and helpful staff Comfortable rooms and great shower in one room Lovely breakfast Overall a wonderful stay

Review 85:The wi-fi internet is poor.

Review 86:The perfect place to stay. The staff take care us very well. They are very nice and helpful. The room is clean. Good location. If I have more time, I will stay longer.

Review 87:Very noisy air conditioning in a neighboring room

Review 88:Lovely staff. Great location. Seems to be one of the few mid range places in Kampot. They were very helpful arranging tour of national park and taxis. Very generous breakfast.

Review 89:Great location close to the River and the old "French Quarter". Hotel very comfortable and staff extremely helpful. Kampot is a very special place and at present not overcrowded from tourist perspective - long may it last !

Review 90:The breakfast quality was good, especially the coffee, but there could have been more of it. Otherwise there's nothing to criticise.

Review 91:The people there are very friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the street quiet, even though the hotel is very central. The hot water in the shower was plentiful. If we'd had time, we'd certainly have stayed longer.

Review 92:I think there could have been a little more variety with the breakfast menu.

Review 93:It's a lovely hotel. The staff are fabulous - incredibly obliging and helpful. I really enjoyed my few days there, and would go back in a heartbeat

Review 94:We paid for a superior room, but it had no view so had to have the curtains closed all the time.

Review 95:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The location, just off the main river road, was quieter but still handy to everything.

Review 96:Nothing to not like!

Review 97:Everything. Lovely friendly welcome after indifference of previous accomodation. Nice cafe on site. Good room and staff helpful with tour bookings and laundry.

Review 98:Notuch- pretty ideal , if picky No restaurant but no big deal as many local places to eat & no pool- but not many pools in kampot

Review 99:Really lovel staff- manageress so helpful. Very clean, central position, good value. Loved kampot and exploring area. Would def go back.

Review 100:I had to walk up three flights of stairs....

Review 101:I liked to people who own the hotel, very nice. The design of the hotel and rooms where nice. The coffee was also good...

Review 102:Sometimes the electricity would go off for a short time and hot water in the morning was spasmodic

Review 103:Very friendly staff, always willing to help with everything and always have genuine smiles. Comfortable room

Review 104:As with most of Cambodia the drains are very sensitive

Review 105:The staff were amazing. So friendly & helpful with the tours we booked and sites to see of Kampot & Kep. The rooms were very clean & the location is central, on a quiet street.

Review 106:There was nothing not to like! 10/10.

Review 107:The staff were just lovely, could not have been more helpful ans friendly. Lovely building and well appointed rooms.

Review 108:The rooms smell moldy - some more than others, but even the ones with windows smell. For the price, this is unacceptable. The common areas are beautiful but already give the impression of poor care in details. Breakfast very poor, the smalles and most limited choice I have seen in Cambodia, including much cheaper hotels.

Review 109:building is beautiful and charming - nice renovation.

Review 110:Only proposal for improvement is to offer a little wider range at breakfast, especially not only the bagette.

Review 111:Very beautiful newish hotel in an old colonial building. Excellent rooms, nice staff, good location. Would definitely return

Review 112:Nothing to dislike. Felt it was slightly overpriced, locally.

Review 113:Modern, well appointed, everything worked, cool, good breakfast with proper bacon!, pleasant and helpful staff. Small balcony, but pedestrian view.

Review 114:Fantastic for visit to Kampot as short walk to riverside and restaurants. Lovely rooms and great staff, particularly Thavy on the desk who was always there with a smile. Good breakfast in nice cafe.

Review 115:Had a room at the back there was not much natural light.

Review 116:Very smart new renovated hotel set in a old villa, very friendly staff, located right in the centre of town.

Review 117:Receptionist and the waiter were both very helpful, attentive andfriendly. Comfortable room and quite the best breakfast we've hadsince we left home 2 weeks ago.

Review 118:Be careful with shower could be temperamental and become very hot.

Review 119:Boutique hotel, central location 300 yards from river, bars andrestaurants. Kampot is small quite town, relaxing not much to do outsideof advertised trips independently or guided. This hotel was ideallyplaced, receptionist very helpful spoke good English and can make allarrangements for you. Western breakfast included eggs, bacon, baguetteand fruit. Would recommend.

Review 120:Modern hotel in a French colonial style. The manager was fantasticallyhelpful on anything at any time. The hotel is very clean and tidy andrun exceptionally well. Close walk to all facilities and restaurants.Free wifi. Definitely would stay there again next time.

Review 121:This hotel was remodelled and quite new and does have some growingpains. There were lots of little things that needed attention but thegood thing was that you only had to mention it and it was tended to.I would have liked to see the cleaning done a bit more carefully. There were area's that needed a good dusting and the bikes needed to be wiped down.

Review 122:It starts with the Manager. She welcomes everyone personally and wasavailable at all times. Breakfast menu was good and served at the tableand there were free bicycles. Bright Airy comfortable rooms, beautifullydecorated hotel. Everything works well(shower/drains/AC/fans, etc) Location was de
