Chiostro Delle Monache Hostel Volterra descritpion

Once a 15th-century Franciscan monastery, Chiostro Delle Monache is just outside Volterra's Etruscan walls, next to the Presidio Ospedaliero Santa Maria Maddalena hospital. It offers en suite rooms, 2 free parking areas, and an original period cloister.
The rooms at Delle Monache are simply furnished, and feature tiled floors and wooden furniture.
On site you will find a café, a reading room and a TV lounge. Free Wi-Fi access is available in these public areas. There is also a children's play area. Breakfast is served in a frescoed room, where you can also have dinner on request.
The monastery was built in 1445, along with the adjacent Church of Saint Girolamo. The cloister is by Michelozzo, a sculptor and architect in Donatello's workshop.
The property is 0.6 miles from Volterra's Porta a Selci gateway, and about an hour's drive from Pisa, Florence and Siena. Public buses stop outside the entrance.

Reviews for Chiostro Delle Monache Hostel Volterra

Review 1:The bed was uncomfortable - it had a foot board which makes it uncomfortable for tall people.

Review 2:Interesting location, clean, parking available and well priced. A short walk to the old town.

Review 3:nothing, always was ok!

Review 4:the position is perfect to visit Volterra. we reached the center of Volterra on foot. The room was cleaned and tidy. The breakfast was delicious, with a lot of different kind of food. The hotel is settled in a very particular place, full of mystery.

Review 5:It was very quiet, in a rural setting and was a pleasant refuge from the close quarters in Volterra. The staff was very helpful and friendly and spoke excellent English. They were helpful in giving us advice about free parking around the city, although the information about parking in area 3 turned out to be incorrect.

Review 6:Warm morning eggs might be better...but I survived great!

Review 7:To stay in former "chiostro" gives a special feeling while concept of merging sober atmosphere of monastery with minimum standards of hotel works out very well. The crew is friendly & always supportive.M.Angela's smile at reception is phenomenal. I enjoyed my stay a lot & will come back. D'ora in poi ho intenzione di im parare l'italiano e poi tornare

Review 8:Please provide a toaster at the breakfast table for foreign visitors. No real views from any rooms and the advertised restaurant isn't in the building but away in the old village itself. Still a lovely stay though.

Review 9:Cool atmosphere, clean, beautiful breakfast room and great breakfast.

Review 10:Reception not always open.

Review 11:Lovely place to stay, a little out of the way = quiet, but not much to do in immediate environment. BUT only 20 minute walk to centre of Volterrs

Review 12:The location is not near to Volterra centre hence the choice of dining places are quite limited unless you have a car. However, the restaurant closest to the hostel, i.e. 200m away is a good place to have dinner(recommended by the staff) if you are too lazy to walk into Volterra city centre.

Review 13:The fact that the staff response to your request promptly vis booking.com is a plus. When we arrive, the staff makes sure we get the necessary information about the place. Lovely compound and as a hostel - value for money especially when we get to have our own private bathroom.

Review 14:We visited during a heatwave and due to the design of the property, very little breeze came into the room. The single fan did nothing to assist the 5 people staying in the room. Perhaps 2 fans in such a large room would be more beneficial.

Review 15:This is a budget property and it is clean and close to Volterra.

Review 16:the bathroom smeels like a hospital, not so igienic, very very cold (they didn't want to turn on the heat in the rooms, only in reception!!!), the maids are very noisy in the morning, their voices woke me up very early in the morning, most of the time you can find the host in the neibourhood, at her sister's hotel

Review 17:good breakfast

Review 18:wifi spotty in room but OK in public area-no big deal for us

Review 19:location,easy drive into town-very quiet-breakfast very good especially the decor-staff very helpful-free parking-if staying try and see inside of church nearby-loved this place will definitely stay here again

Review 20:Nothing!!!! To something, One day they forgot to leave shower gel etc, and we had to ask for.

Review 21:Very charming and confortable. Nice breakfast. People are very helpful and friendly, they gave us lots of information about surrounding area, trek tours to do on our own (we did one of them). We had enough place to leave the car in the little Car park in front of the Hostel.

Review 22:The monastery is quaint with Romanesque arches. An excellent place to rest in the evening, and a very charming place to eat breakfast in the outdoor halls around the open courtyard. Highly recommend it for the price. A little outside the city - but no problem with a car - about 8 minute drive.

Review 23:We had dinner at the restaurant run by their sister hotel close by.....mediocre, and we would not recommend it.

Review 24:Beautifully restored 15th C monastery, with ultra modern finishings. Superb breakfast, very helpful staff. The wifi was down during our stay, but that was not the hotel's fault. A good location, not far from Volterra.......really excellent value.

Review 25:The only but for me a major let down were the mattresses. They are rock hard and therefore, sleep isn't very rejuvenating. Shame because otherwise fantastic...

Review 26:Very friendly staff, good price, idyllic little place.

Review 27:Free parking. Good Wifi. Beautiful breakfast room. Basic, but clean and spacious room in a truly gorgeous building.

Review 28:Nothing

Review 29:Quiet lovely location close to old town . The hotel beautiful and breakfast was very nice.

Review 30:Everything

Review 31:No mosquito screens on the windows so got bitten by mosquitos..

Review 32:Spacious and good value for money.

Review 33:Simple old equipment only for sleep. Toilet stink very much.

Review 34:Nice building in old style

Review 35:No English TV channels, like BBC and CNN

Review 36:Excellent location. Excellent staff.

Review 37:The combination of an historical building that has been sensitively adapted to a modern hotel.

Review 38:Very nice setting, friendly staff, easy access, good location.

Review 39:The friendliness and helpfulness of all staff

Review 40:bathroom in bad condition (shower not properly fixed, shelf hanging loose)

Review 41:great atmosphere, nice location, good rooms

Review 42:Very clean , comfortable and excellent breakfast

Review 43:Lack of air-conditionning

Review 44:A nice room and place in general

Review 45:just 15 mins walking from Voltera's historical sentre

Review 46:Unfriendly staff, no air conditioned

Review 47:Nice location, out of town, but very close

Review 48:Good food at associate hotel near by

Review 49:Air conditioning not effective. Kept windows and shutters closed to avoid mosquitoes so room was stifling

Review 50:The whole feel of the place

Review 51:Nothing!

Review 52:Comfort, style, cleanliness,

Review 53:Large room with with outside sitting. Pleasant peaceful cloister.

Review 54:Beautiful building. Comfortable and clean. Great value.

Review 55:The bed was very hard and extreamly uncomfortable, we couldn't sleep at all.

Review 56:Good breakfast, big room and bathroom.

Review 57:Friendly and helpful personnel. Good breakfast (mostly sweet). Clean and quiet place.

Review 58:loved the location Good quiet sleep good breakfast very clean and the staff were great

Review 59:The pool is not in the Chiostro Delle Monache location. You have to cross Volterra to find it.

Review 60:Breakfast was delicious!

Review 61:The reuse of an old original monastary.

Review 62:Second night there was arriving lots of youngsters from different teams of volleyball. They where playing ball in the morning, just a few yards from the breakfast space. The staff made nothing.

Review 63:Very nice place and very nice breakfast. Staff fantastic.

Review 64:Bus load of young students arrived for 2 nights. Noise level increased!

Review 65:Great base to explore the area, parking, quiet until students arrived, friendly staff

Review 66:The bed was very uncomfortable. We didnt rest after daily sightseeing. Unfortunately this hotel is for one night.

Review 67:Breakfest was very good. Wifi worked only at ground floor. To the city was about 15 minutes by feet.

Review 68:Wifi is not available in the room, but it wasn't a problem to sit in public area and use wifi. Worked well.

Review 69:Wonderful staff, generous breakfast, very clean establishment and very quiet area outside of city walls. We liked the 20 min. walk to town, but could be too long for some people.

Review 70:toilet flushed very poorly > reception told us they would take care but nothing was done / heater started on its own in the evening, no possibility to shut it down

Review 71:the location is very good ( if you are able to walk some distance) / car park available / note: when driving up the "hospital area" you are on the right road: hotel is situated at the end of the road

Review 72:Its location is kind of secluded and we were there on a work-day, so we were one of the two only tenants of a very big facility, which was kind of melancholic.

Review 73:We liked the environment and the character of the building, the decoration of the breakfast room, the patio. Rooms were very spacious and clean. Very quiet.

Review 74:It may say hostel but it definitely doesn't look like one. The view of the courtyard and bell tower is really beautiful and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was very nice and it is just a short walk to the town centre. Highly recommend!

Review 75:Rooms are good and clean, but the walls are very thin and we could hear everything from the other rooms around. As the hotel is a 30-min walk from Volterra walls, I recommend to have a car (in fact, you need a car to visit all the Toscana!).

Review 76:We booked for the Chiostro, but when we arrived it was closed and we were referred to another hotel close, called La Foresteria, where we were already expected by the staff. La Foresteria is a very good hotel, very clean, good breakfast and good dinner. As the hotel is far from Volterra walls, we chose to have dinner in the hotel. Internet was free and ok.

Review 77:No nearby restaurant. We ate well and cheaply at the Forestiere hotel, but needed a torch to walk to it.

Review 78:Peaceful location reasonably close to Volterra, which was only a 10 min walk away. Lovely breakfast room.

Review 79:My room was rather easy, but clean. Wifi only in the reception area.

Review 80:Accomodation in former monastry, very calm place with very friendly atmosphere. There is nice lecture room with books in several languages and nice atrium with water well, palms and outside seating! Very good breakfest in stylish hall with old fresco.

Review 81:Twenty minutes walk from Volterra in a rather run-down area.

Review 82:Very good value: a welcoming hotel with clean, modestly furnished, spacious rooms and good facilities. Good breakfast with plenty of choice.

Review 83:No internet (at least, it didn't work when we were there).

Review 84:The genius loci is of an ancient Franciscan convent. Rooms are spacious and comfortable with great vistas of courtyard/cloister, garden and nearby Volterra. Helpful, friendly staff. A very special experience. Great breakfast too!

Review 85:No indicatiors nor sign-boards - difficult to find especially in the dark. Basic room equipment.

Review 86:Hotelik urządzony w starym klasztorze, przepiękne miejsce/widoki niedaleko Volterry (ale warto mieć samochód), bardzo dobry punkt wypadowy do zwiedzania miasta i okolicy. Beautiful place (not far from Volterra), very friendly staff,

Review 87:Biggest bathroom we had in Italy. Spotless room. And very quiet - aboon. If you're driving, it's easy to get to town and theparking is free. Walking takes longer. Magnificent breakfast, with hard-boiled eggs, several kinds of fruit, etc. btw, b'fast was right onthe property if you stay in a room; don't know about if you stay inthe hostel. If you go, be sure to walk around to the church and ring. The caretaker will show you the chapels which contain Della Robbia's. Fantastic.

Review 88:Reception closed in early evening (odd time!) and we were not told about access to downstairs lobby and courtyard for valuable and much needed internet access for research.

Review 89:Beautiful old monastery lovingly restored.

Review 90:Interesting hotel in a renovated former monastery, about 1 km from the old town of Volterra, which is located up on the hill. Simple but attractive spacious rooms with bath. All very clean and no-nonsense. Good general atmosphere. For Italian understanding a good breakfast. Very friendly & helpful service. Parking near the hotel. Absolutely a good price!

Review 91:the staff was very helpful and friendly, great breakfast in the relaxed atmosphere in the courtyard of the old but newly renovated monastary (Kloster),which was a great experience!!! we can highly recommend this place if you are looking for something out of the ordinary to spent the night!! :-)

Review 92:Breadfast was basic. Would be nice to have mosquito screnes on the windows.

Review 93:It was a lovely old converted monastary, beautiful courtyard, quite and only a few mins from the centre of Volterra by car. They had parking for the car. Their Coffee was great.

Review 94:The huge hospital just near this place doesn't make you feel very comfortable. The smell in the nearby location doesn't make you feel comfortable as well. If you go to Volterra by foot you will feel it.

Review 95:Quite unusual atmosphere which corresponds to the atmosphere of Volterra

Review 96:took 10 minutes to find it.it could have cost 10 euros cheaper

Review 97:near volterra, very clean and quiet.nice breakfast.i expected a better scenery from the photos but thats ok

Review 98:No a/c, during this hot Italian summer, just a floor fan. PromisedInternet never worked.

Review 99:Clean room and a friendly staff. For Italian standards, a decentbreakfast and free parking.

Review 100:Wifi does not work in rooms.

Review 101:Very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful place, big and cool room, very quiet. Good to sleep. And breakfast was so good! Great location just below Volterra.

Review 102:Great hostel with nice cool rooms. This hostel could easily be called a hotel as well. Walking distance to the old town center. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 103:the hard beds and lack of wifi in the rooms

Review 104:I liked the location, the monastery etc. The people were very nice and all was very clean. The beds were a bit hard and it was a bit austere and the wifi only functions in the lobby. But for the time we were there it was perfect.

Review 105:poor air con large party of young Americans making lots of noise both late at night and early in morning and management did not deal with this

Review 106:proximity to Volterra price beautiful setting and building

Review 107:The hotel was hard to find and/because the directions were hard tofollow. The pillows were very thin, so we needed another one each.

Review 108:Very friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms, well appointed;excellent breakfast. A very modern and clean hotel.

Review 109:Nothing really. We were expecting simple ,clean accomodation & that is what we got.

Review 110:The building & setting. The room was spacious and clean. The cloisters & the frescoes were wonderful. The accomodation is basic but it is good value for money. It was further from Volterra than we thought but it is easily walkable.

Review 111:We were unaware that the dining room was located off the property and quite hard to find. If we hadn't asked another hotel guest we would not have found it.

Review 112:Great location just below Volterra. Easy to find by car. Also a great place to be for day trips. Very friendly staff. Great breakfast.

Review 113:At first, staff person at reception rattled off info. as fast as possible, leaving no room for questions. Later, this person was more helpful. Room was o.k., but spartan.

Review 114:Clean facility. Good Breakfast. Close parking. Location was o.k.

Review 115:the breakfast was a little too basic

Review 116:never stayed in hostel before, but must say, very clean, very friendly, what else do you need to get your head down

Review 117:If you are not very mobile this is not the hotel for you as it is a little out of the town.

Review 118:This hotel is very nice. It is a basic room, which is comfortable but small. The outdoor space is good and the breakfast provided is good.

Review 119:We didn't like the sweet breakfast.

Review 120:The "Ostello" was interesting, quiet and peaceful. The room was clean and well-renovated. We walked (1 km) to nice Volterra. There were only sweet "things"...as breakfast, but it was nice to sit outside in the sun, while eating.

Review 121:This was a different hotel/B&B than expected, but worked out great. Aconverted convent, this facility is located in a very quite area andclose to town. It provides a "hostel" type accomodation and atraditional room type of accomodation. Our room was a private room, butprovided two twin beds (bunk bed) in addition to the large queen/doublethat we used. It may feel more like a "dorm" setting, but it was verywell priced, clean, comfortable, and a quiet. The breakfast wastraditional, but had more guests than any of the other places we stayed.Chiostro Delle Monache has appeal to a broader group that would incluedgroup travel (hostel), family (our room could accomodate 4 people), andbudget minded folks. Not the most romantic place, but I would stayagain, as the cost was modest, room clean, proximity to town good.

Review 122:A little basic. Suits youd people holidaying and exploring rather than older guests looking for comfort

Review 123:Reasonably priced with good size bedroom and bathrooms

Review 124:Water in shower area drained away very slowly and smell of drain wasnoticeable, but that is common in Italy.

Review 125:Good location (quiet and peaceful) and close to city wall; basicfacilities (it calls itself a hostel) but comfortable and clean; roomsand bathrooms are spacious; breakfast is very good; staff very friendlyand helpful.

Review 126:tv channels poor (not that important), in the toilett a ventilator would be welcome

Review 127:Very very friendly staff, price, nice breackfast room with affresco (!)very close to Volterra center, room was super silence to go in a deep sleep.

Review 128:too far from choice of restaurants but close to a hotel with a restaurant that had a dining room, so we ate there. good service with average food.

Review 129:good beds and bath, ok breakfast
