Reviews for Relais Ducale
Review 1:Great hospitality from Daniella, Sean and their team.....a smile at all times. perfect location at the edge of the Piazza. Wonderful roof gardens which nobody else seemed to use!
Review 2:Wifi access is poor, in most cases not working. The hotel is only reachable on foot.
Review 3:The hotel is located in the downtown area, very close to each place worthy of a visit. It dwells in an ancient building furnished with articles that are a good compromise between old and modern. Staff is very supportive and friendly.
Review 4:The room was a little on the small side and both the Bathroom and Bedroom would benefit from some refurbishment
Review 5:The location and building is fabulous and the staff helpful.
Review 6:Ac was broken and it took 2 days to get them to fix it after asking6x/day. Asked for manager and he never contacted us. Not a 4star property with this type of management.Wifi only works in lobby, not rooms.
Review 7:Location and the Garden Restaurant was nice at their other hotel
Review 8:The single bed my daughter slept on kept collapsing. But, other than that, the hotel is clean and very characteristic. The staff is polite and friendly. Breakfast was bey good.
Review 9:The hotel is ideally located in Piazza Grande. We had a beautiful view of the palazz Dei Consoli from our room which had a small balcony.
Review 10:We could not sleep at night, because the bell tower, which is in front of the hotel, rings every 15 minutes, EVEN DURING THE WHOLE NIGHT. The sound is so loud that it is impossible not to hear it. The hotel should offer their guests ear-plugs.
Review 11:Very kind, smiling staff
Review 12:The bells in the nearby Cathedral toll every 15 minutes through the night.
Review 13:Lovely town and nice old building. Associated restaurant, Taverno de Lupo served one of the best meals we have eaten in this part of Italy - real white truffles!
Review 14:small bathroom. shower head low & arch way over bath too low - head hitting roof. booked suit - small, poor views, hard bed, no extras ie water, coffee, dressing gowns etc. wouldn't return.
Review 15:Such a lovely peaceful roof garden, on 3rd floor, peace destroyed by some electrical machine / air condition / Cooling system or what ever, whining away at intervals :(
Review 16:Friendly laid back atmosphere! so Italian, bravissimo!!
Review 17:Loved the location, the ambiance, the hosts, the view from our room, the bar on the piazza, the family restaurant nearby, and the whole feel of charming Gubbio.
Review 18:Breakfast had a good choice but the quality might have been a bit better. There are very many stairs and even if fit it can get rather annoying trudging up so many stairs as the hotel is built along a hillside and lifts to not interconnect.
Review 19:We loved the view, the comfort of the bedroom, the high quality old furnishings - rather like Spanish paradors - as well as the central location. The nearby restaurant Ala Balestra is very popular and good value both for pizzas and full meals. Staff were very helpful. We bought lunch one day and took it and a bottle of wine to the terrace garden on the third floor for a memorable lunch. Parking is free in an underground car park about 7 minutes walk
Review 20:Very friendly, relaxed hotel. Simple rooms with an old fashioned charm. Perfect location near lovely shops and restaurants with wonderful views from the square outside. Staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. Looking forward to revisiting soon.
Review 21:The bells!!! We thought other reviewers were going over the top about this but now we have experienced it we agree. They ring every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day! We had little sleep our entire stay and looked forward to moving on which is a shame as Gubbio and the hotel are lovely and worth a visit. Nothing the hotel can do about this, it's a medieval town after all. Also, our room was quite dark - more or stronger lighting would have helped when getting ready, etc.
Review 22:The location is perfect, central to everything you need. The hotel is lovely - very traditional and ornately decorated and the gardens are beautiful. Our room was large, comfortable and had a great view. Lots to choose from at breakfast.
Review 23:Very warm welcome and helpful staff. Wonderful views from our room across the town and to the hills beyond.Peaceful courtyard gardens in which to relax after exploring the sights. Altogether a very memorable stay.
Review 24:Parking a long way away, no help with bags to/from room, old & chipped bath, clock bells a bit noisy.
Review 25:The views, the bed, the breakfast, helpful receptionist, ideal central location even with the many steps. I felt the poor Italian economy is having an effect.
Review 26:The difference between local price on beers/drinks and tourist price.
Review 27:The staff were so friendly and professional, the historic building and location was beautiful.
Review 28:Pretty difficult to access with lots of luggage, although staff was as helpful as they could be It would have been nicer to have breakfast in the garden rather than having to go down so many flights to the lower street level
Review 29:Staff was very friendly and helpful. Interior garden complete with song birds was delightful Loved the view from our room out over the city Strong sense of history
Review 30:Nothing
Review 31:Beautiful spacious suite with wonderful views. The hotel has the most perfect location on the main square and a wonderful terrace to enjoy. The staff are excellent - so efficient and friendly. This is our fourth visit which says it all really!
Review 32:Location ,location, location!!Beautiful.
Review 33:The TV was difficult to operate.
Review 34:The staff was very helpful.
Review 35:Location. Value
Review 36:Location was great
Review 37:la situation, la gentillesse du personnel
Review 38:The parrot that woke us too early
Review 39:The location
Review 40:the kindness of people
Review 41:The dining facility is not great.
Review 42:Situated opposite the town square in the best possible position for Gubbio. The courtyard gardens of the hotel.
Review 43:Service impeccable, amazingly restored ancient building with lovely surprises- gardens, secret tunnel, stone walls
Review 44:The WiFi was very poor.
Review 45:Location in the heart of city, interior garden, very helpful staff.
Review 46:Amenities were 3 star at best--wifi, minimal--breakfast, just okay--room and bathroom, small. Beds very uncomfortable.
Review 47:Location
Review 48:Comfortable and quiet hotel in the middle of town. Lovely view of garden from bedroom window
Review 49:Church bells in the square occasionally disturbed sllep
Review 50:Staff very helpful. Great room in a prime location
Review 51:The location is superb Very friendly staff
Review 52:Difficult to get there by car.
Review 53:Fabulous location, historic buildings.
Review 54:Bathrooms need updating Plumbing - really noisy
Review 55:Location Price Character Staff Views
Review 56:Bells every 15 minutes, air condition was not serviced--so did not work, parking was 400 meters away.
Review 57:Nice rooms, nice staff, nice breakfast, central location, great city.
Review 58:Breakfast could have been a little more exciting, with more interesting cheeses, breads to offer.
Review 59:Very friendly family run hotel ~ nothing was a bother, couldn't have been more helpful. Right in the center, easy walking to restaurants. Had fabulous view from Room 316, breathtaking. Would definitely return.
Review 60:This wasn't a problem for us, but we wouldn't recommend the hotel (or Gubbio or any Italian hill town for that matter) for elderly or mobility-impaired people. Staff were fabulous in helping with our luggage though. Parking wasn't a problem (it's five minutes walk away and free), but it probably wouldn't be much fun if it were raining. Based on other reviews, I think you can get lucky or unlucky with the rooms: seems to be quite a bit of variation. Ours was quite good, but no view and not what you'd expect for 4-star. It was the staff and location that made this place special, and worth the dollars.
Review 61:Two things stood out: the location (right in the heart of hill-top Gubbio) and the staff. We had all the facilities of a hotel (bar etc) combined with the friendly personal service of a B&B. Can't speak highly enough of the staff - just wonderful.
Review 62:the bathroom is rather primitive, especially the shower which is fit for a youth hostel- the water ran hot and cold
Review 63:the hotel has a lot of charm and is in the center of Gubbio
Review 64:It is a tired older hotel. Needs some maintenance and care. Furniture is outdated and shows a lot of wear.
Review 65:Location was great and Dora the bird was fun. The staff was very helpful and nice.
Review 66:The room is small and the shower box was extremely small in our room. Although very good, it doesn't seem to be a four stars, but maybe the location is what guarantees the last star.
Review 67:The service is friendly and the location couldn't be better. It is also great for offering free private parking.
Review 68:But oh God, the bells! The bells! All night long on the quarter of an hour. An extra blast on the half an hour and on the hour - all hell or should I say heaven breaks lose. We were told it was a special day to commemorate a special event and that usually it is just on the half hour that the bells ring with a blast off at 7 in the morning. Anyway, despite loving the room, there was no hope of sleep and we were moved to the sister hotel the Bosone Garden a short walk away. There is no parking at this hotel and it's necessary to find one's own way through a one way, complicated system to a car park which the hotel has an arrangement with. In the end we couldn't find it and so parked on a side street - which was fine. I noticed the hotel has a van and can't understand why it couldn't lead the driver to the carpark and then drive them back. Also the breakfast was served a room off the bar downstairs - a shame when there is more than one nice garden as well as other areas in the hotel. Breakfast - the usual with tepid water for tea and luke warm insipid coffee. The sister hotel on the other hand, served a great breakfast and brought tea and coffee to the table - both piping hot. Having said that the Relais Ducale is charming as is Gubbio itself.
Review 69:Lovely room. Great staff. There are all sorts of little quirks in this hotel: gardens where you least expect it; a parrot that speaks Italian (of course) and the room we stayed in was full of character. It was one of the more expensive rooms which is a bonus about travelling in late September - such rooms are affordable. When we had a problem, the staff took care of it, and all was dealt with in a smooth and efficient manner.
Review 70:It is in the center of the old part of Gubbio so you have a bit of aclimb up from the public parking below. If you are in reasonably goodhealth and have baggage with wheels it will work. This is a minorcomplaint from two people in their mid seventies. We loved the fact thatso many of the things associated with the Don Matteo tv show can befound here such as the chess set and the photos of the cast in the Bardownstairs.
Review 71:Very friendly staff, nice facility, wonderful location.Gubbio has a lot to offer from fine dining in the hotel restaurant, to bicycling, hiking, scenic historic buildings. We echo other reviewers and that we hated to leave the Relais Ducale and Gubbio
Review 72:The room was on the thrid floor, very dark and had a low ceiling not what you would expect to find in a Ducale Palace. One bedroom window and the bathroom window opened out onto the upper terrace. The shutter on the bathroom window did not close properly which meant we could not open the window at all. The bathroom was very small and there was nowhere to put anything. The bed was hard. The whole place needs modernising and decorating. The breakfast could be improved and as I only ate breakfast in the hotel it must have been that which gave me an upset stomach for 2 days. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 73:The only good thing about this hotel was that it was in Piazza Grande.
Review 74:The € Euro exchange rate.
Review 75:The views were spectacular, the best Italian food I have ever eaten, the people were extremely friendly, the cobblestone streets were beautiful.
Review 76:If you like central Italy and the old hillside towns, you'll love Gubbio. Relais Ducale is the best positioned hotel in the town and service is excellent. Having your breakfast on Piazza Grande, where Don Matteo plays chess is not to be forgotten. Very good value!
Review 77:Cannot fault the hotel however it is a bit tricky to find and involves driving through some narrow streets. You can drive up to the hotel but parking is a 10 minute walk away.
Review 78:A fabulous hotel. Our room was large and extremely comfortable with antique furnishings. The terraces are beautifully kept with flowers and fountain. This was an overnight stop and I wish we could have stayed longer.
Review 79:Because of web of one way streets in Gubbio, hotel was difficult toaccess....hotel should provide very detailed driving directions on website. Parking is located about a 10 minute walk distant from hotel. There is no elevator service from ground floor entrance, through a bar,to the reception desk, so guests have to tote heavy bags up a steep andnarrow stairway. Wifi is intermittent. Antique furnishings referred toon hotel web site are much closer to "mother in law cast offs"than to anything touched by Louis xiv.
Review 80:Views are spectacular. Old castle is funky but fairly comfortable. Staffwas very pleasant, room was clean. Town is very quiet with littleevidence of the hordes of tourists that make Rome or Florence sosuffocating.
Review 81:Nothing.
Review 82:Beautiful old hotel in centre of gorgeous, historical Gubbio. The hotel had many lovely terraces, sitting areas and a maze of multi level rooms. Room was big with lovely views over the valley.
Review 83:Not knowing to just pack an overnight bag as the car must be parked at the foot of the village and suitcases must go up a flight of stairs before getting to an elevator.
Review 84:The setting at the top of this Medieval Village afforded a view from our room of the whole Valley over the rooftops of Gubbio. The private outdoor garden with potted plants and trees was a lush oasis in the midst of ancient walls. The family that run the hotel are warm and welcoming as well. Gubbio is a must see and Taverna de Lupo a short walk from the hotel is perfect.
Review 85:We can't think of anything we didn't like, we recommend it all.
Review 86:All the staff at this unique hotel were friendly , helpful and charming. We were helped , every step of the way to have a wonderful holiday. Bookings to recomended restaurants, driving directions to a number of places were extremly helpful. The hotel our home from home during our 9 nights stay. We express our thanks to all the staff and in particular Barbara, Danielle , Sean and night porters. Wonderful.
Review 87:The hotel is vast and rooms not entirely accessed by lifts. Some heavy lifting of luggage up stairs required. Parking was a long way from hotel.
Review 88:Spectacular location. Friendly staff
Review 89:A top hotel in a fabulous location. Our room overlooked the hotel garden and across the town to the countryside. The hotel has elegant sitting rooms where you can relax and read a book or plan your day. Staff are great - friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
Review 90:The distance from the parking area. You have to bring your luggages up an external staircase. It's not comfortable, but all worth the bother.
Review 91:The position. You step out to the center of the old town, to Piazza dei Consoli. It's as if you're living in the old Gubbio. You've got that experience.
Review 92:That I had to ask them to turn the heat on. But when I did, it wenton promptly.
Review 93:Everything! The owners are so warm and friendly, the place itself isunbelievably beautiful, the location is the best, and the rooms arelarge, well-decorated and comfortable. My favorite hotel in Gubbio andone of my favorites in Italy. Returned this time and will return againand again.
Review 94:Quite a few stairs but staff helped with luggage and one needs the exercise after such delicious food in Gubbio. The cathedral bells close bye chime every 15 mins........ 24 hours, so I found myself counting them all through the night. Beautiful sounding but!!!!
Review 95:Location, value, friendly and helpful staff
Review 96:It is rather difficult to find & parking is tricky but very worthwhile nevertheless.
Review 97:A delightful historic hotel with friendly staff, comfortable rooms and bathrooms. The views from the room were spectacular. Highly recommended.
Review 98:Great central location for tourist sights, so no on-site parking, butdirected to free parking 10 mins walk, while staff took luggage up toroom. Lovely old building with character, small bar/snack available. Oneflight of steps to reception, but everywhere in Gubbio involves steps!Small secluded garden. Good value.
Review 99:This was my second visit to Hotel Relais Ducale which is a recommendation in itself. The hotel is ideally situated in the historic center of Gubbio. It comprises a series of buildings linked together, one of which opens right onto the town's main piazza. My room was spotless and clean. The bed was comfortable. A safe was provided in the closet. Breakfast comprises a wide selection of meats and cheeses, breads and pastries, jams, yoghurts, fruit juices and good coffee. The staff are very helpful and friendly. I would definately stay at Relais Ducale when I return to Gubbio.
Review 100:The breakfast was simple for this level of hotel. The parking is 10minutes away and the hotel is hard to reach especially at certain hourswhen some streets are closed.
Review 101:In romantic Gubbio, there could not be a better situated hotel thanthis one, right across from the Palazzo and near the heart of thehistoric town. The hotel is quaintly built consisting of a combinationof historic buildings. The room had a fantastic view. Ask for a roomwith frontal view at the level of the rose garden terrace high up inthe building.
Review 102:The bath - looked a bit shabby with chips filled in with white paint.
Review 103:The hotel had real character, with lovely courtyards to use in good weather. It's location was central in Gubbio. The staff were very welcoming and helpful.
Review 104:The Relais Ducale is the best hotel in Gubbio, one of the most charming places I have ever visited. Every one of the staff were lovely, and were anxious to please us. The rooms are superb, tastefully decorated, and spotlessly clean. The breakfasts were very good, and having your breakfast outside on Piazza Grande made it feel a special occasion! Full marks for this hotel - excellent value for money. Everything about this hotel was perfect, and I couldn't find anything bad to say if I tried.
Review 105:To enter the hotel you have to enter in a coffee shop ran by the sameowner and through the breakfast room of the hotel which is connected andis part of the the same coffee shop. And is not an elegant coffee shop, more a touristic one. When we arrived we found that the room we required(216, the only one they have which is inside a kind of ancient brickcave and they sell all their hotel's rooms showing that room to makemore appeal to the customers...) was not available, seems for acommunication problem with booking.com. The elevator is located atsecond floor but fortunately the staff kindly helped us with theluggage. Unfortunately for him, the elevator was broken so he had tobrought the luggages (two very heavy suitcases) through the stairs tillthe 4th floor. Immediately we were infomerd that a water pipe was brokenso we would not have a regular supply of hot water in our room, theytold us the pipe was under reparation, however after the second day theyadmitted that they could not repaire the pipe in short time so theyoffered us to move to another hotel, the Bosone Palace, belonging thesame group, with an upgrade to the "suite Rinascimentale". Then most ofour problem were resolved, the room at Bosone was better, wider and wehad very nice time there (except some small details, like the bathroomwith only shower, the shower furnished with a cheap curtain, etc.).Definitely, I think Relais Ducale is no more than a 3 stars hotel. Noway. You can only see the 4 stars in the night from your room window...
Review 106:The hotel is inside an ancient building with a interesting history, located just few meters from Palazzo Ducale (to which was once connectedby a tunnel). The rooms was nice, not so big but not so small. The viewfrom the window was simply amazing. The breakfast was unbalanced to thesweet side, however I could found my favourite cereals and fruits, so nobad for me, but there is not enough choice of ham, cheese and salads forpeople who like them. There are two nice terraces and customers can havebreakfast there with an extra of 6 euros. I would suggest to make it astandard to serve breakfast on the terraces, it would chance completelythe standard of hotel.
Review 107:We had a hard time finding this hotel but when we did, we were very happy. The room was comfortable and the location was good. It was not central but we were happy with that.
Review 108:Excellent location in Palace Ducale in the middle of Gubbio. Romantic atmosphere. Good breakfast. You can drive to the hotel but leave your car at the parking 500m away (free). Super view from tower rooms!
Review 109:Lots of stair climbing, even with the elevator in the main building.
Review 110:Fantastic old building right in the center of Gubbio. Greatterraces/gardens, friendly & helpful staff.
Review 111:Everything. Front desk very helpful. When you exit the bus walk up the sloping street; at the curve in the road look for a sign to go to the ascensore; it will take you to the piazza where the hotel is located! Otherwise you will have to lug your things up an even steeper incline with many steps! Be sure to visit the church where the ceri are stored.
Review 112:Some may not like the stairs and hills to get to it, but I loved thisabout it! Be sure to drop your bags off at the cafe.
Review 113:Beautiful Gubbio location, high up the hill. Quiet, relaxing butbreathtaking setting.
Review 114:We loved the hotel sitting high on the hill with beautiful views andgardens within the hotel grounds. We decided to have a room with stonewalls and arched ceiling, was a bit small but enjoyed the experience.Would recommend this hotel - value for money.
Review 115:Very poor breakfast. Some disinterested staff. Poor condition of room for a 4* hotel.
Review 116:They let themselves down with the entrance to the breakfast/bar area.
Review 117:It is certainly a very special location.
Review 118:Great location. Helpful and friendly staff. Garden in centre of hotel wonderful peaceful retreat.
Review 119:Too many stairs!
Review 120:Location vg interesting use of the hotel as built on a slope. Best hotel in Gubbio.
Review 121:We have been before, so we know there is nothing not to like
Review 122:Perfect Location in a beautiful Town
Review 123:Perfect position in the historical centre of the town. Very welcoming staff and decent breakfast.
Review 124:Beautiful rooftop garden.
