Reviews for Grand Hotel Portovenere

Review 1:Excellent location, very close to everything, right in front of bus terminal stop, boat dock, restaurants, old town. Rooms with very amazing ocean view. Very helpful and friendly staff. Great breakfast.

Review 2:We had a lovely stay , until it came time to go. We needed our car's GPS to be set for us to get to Florence. After an hour of trying to set it we were told by staff that GPS was broken . I was also told by staff that it was not part of their job to set GPS's for customers. As a five star hotel , I feel that it should part of the service. As it turned out the GPS was not broken and it was set in 2 mins. It was very important to our trip that we had the GPS set for us , as we had no idea how to get to Florence without it. In our own country we can set one in 2 seconds. It was very upsetting to be told that it was not their problem. I would help a stranger in my country set their GPS , you would think that this hotel would be happy to help a customer.

Review 3:Lovely location , great view , hotel very clean , five star service.

Review 4:Breakfast buffet did not include Prosecco which is standard in hotels of this type in Italy.

Review 5:Staff was friendly and client focused from the minute we parked our car and throughout our entire stay. The hotel is in a perfect location with stunning views from their rooms and terrace. Available parking directly adjacent to the hotel is a big plus! We enjoyed our stay and were really sad to leave but will return again!

Review 6:Seaview would have been nice. Although standard rooms are nice and nothing to complain about them, Porto Venere offers also really nice views to see. Also this hotel.

Review 7:Excellent service. Nice rooms. The hotel has good restaurant. Everything in Porto Venere is near. Parking is easy. We'll definitively come back.

Review 8:No train (but 5 Terre is better seen from the water anyway). The adequate, adjacent garage is a little small and located on a one way street BEFORE one reaches the hotel. Do not try to drop luggage in front of hotel. Porter will meet you. Parking logistics are not hard to manage; but, you will regret winging it. Access to this hotel is, in any event, far superior to that of any of the five cities.

Review 9:Corner suite (well worth the extra $) with large terrace overlooking Gulf of Poets, Isola Palmeria, San Pietro Church, and a castle sitting above a rainbow of shops and restaurants. Adjacent to parking and the 5 Terre/ La Spezia ferry. Good restaurants. Not too crowded. Easy walking on the promenade below.

Review 10:I liked every thing from the hotel, it's clean, the view is beautifull, the location, the staf is so nice, the restaurant, breakfast. I recomend this hotel, and congratulations!!,

Review 11:Room on first floor had an obstructed view of bay. For price of room expected better

Review 12:Location to ferry can not be beat. Breakfast on hotel veranda a must. View is exceptional..

Review 13:Not so friendly staff who were difficult. For instance, because we were 6 people, we were told we couldn't sit on the patio part of the restaurant and had to sit inside the hot enclosed area. Just didn't make sense!!

Review 14:Excellent location.

Review 15:The manner of the car park staff as they were somewhat brusque and overbearing and really need to pick up their skills in client relationship. I do not wish to put people off this hotel as it is fabulous but make them aware of this unpleasant aspect.

Review 16:The location. whatever the short comings of this hotel maybe, this is the only place in the the town to stay, wonderful and exciting views. Most of the staff were exceptional, professional and accommodating.

Review 17:Sheets were a little scratchy and uncomfortable.

Review 18:Perfect location for visiting Cinque Terre. Portovenere is charming but not too touristy, and easy to get to the five villages. The hotel is central to all the sites and amenities of Portovenere, including great restaurants and bars. The hotel staff was great, and there's a gym that can be used, which is nice for longer stays.

Review 19:Best hotel in Portovenere. It's beautiful and centrally located and literally footsteps away from everything. The staff are warm and welcoming and helpful. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.

Review 20:A beautiful hotel overlooking the sea front area of Portovenere. A fantastic location. As you would expect from a 5 star hotel the staff cannot be faulted.

Review 21:I thought price excessive and set more for location that quality.(but note in holiday season that's what you pay for)

Review 22:Location is excellent easy access to town activities and restaurants, breakfast and dinner on terrace most enjoyable plus all staff very helpful

Review 23:There is no swimmingpool and the beach is a 15 minute walk. It costs E40 a day even though staying in the hotel. A widow, I had reserved dinner and when I arrived, on time, at the empty restaurant was told by the maitr d' that there was no availability. I complained and was shown a table inside-the lights were not even on. I refused and was grudgingly given a table on the terrace. The service was bad and I was virtually ignored by the staff. The next morning I complained at the front desk, overheard by the manager who insisted that I have a complimentary dinner. It was a different maitre d' and service etc was quite different!

Review 24:I liked the terrace for meals. One can see both the sea and town.

Review 25:Rooms are oké and clean, but not "grand" TV on room 214 not Always functioning Poor Wifi

Review 26:Great location and view from room and breakfast area. Good garageservice

Review 27:The booking.com description of a junior suite does not match the hotel website. this category does not guarantee a terrace.

Review 28:The location can't be beat.

Review 29:Nothing

Review 30:Awesome experience all around Great view of the sea Excellent breakfast buffet Would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone travelling to the Cinque Terre

Review 31:No facilities, no swimming pool, not much to do when the weather isn't good which is what happened to us. Also, the people above us walked around in high heels and seemed to always be moving furniture, we felt it was a very noisy hotel and we were woken early each morning. No views from the back rooms, over look a public apartment building so always have to have curtains drawn. We don't feel we got value for money, quite expensive to stay.

Review 32:Location is amazing. Terrace is wonderful and breakfast is excellent.

Review 33:The restaurant staff, especially Massimiliano, was very attentive. My son celebrated his 30th birthday with a long meal outdoors looking over the inlet, and Massimiliano helped make it extra special by choosing the wine, helping with the meal selection, and celebrating with limoncello! Thank you for so much! Another night, Peter made a reservation for us at another restaurant.

Review 34:Extra small garage entrance - mission impossible by bigger car (quite a challenge by normal size actually), wifi comes and goes

Review 35:Great location, nice staff, perfect breakfast

Review 36:It was over priced, in my opinion. The breakfast was a bit disappointing for such a "luxury" hotel

Review 37:Rooms were nice, staff super friendly and professional, location, of course, is outstanding. The view from the room was beautiful.

Review 38:The Grand Hotel Portovenere was an absolute gem. We stayed in a junior suite with a picture perfect view of the town. We live in Switzerland and often travel to Italy. We will definitely stay at here again. If you are looking to impress, this is your best option. Easy ferries to Cinque Terre. A truly perfect destination.

Review 39:close to the nice port, lots of restaurants in walking distance, parking available right at the hotel, close to visit cinque terre, awesome view over port from breakfast terrace

Review 40:The hotel doesn't have beach access, but they have an agreement with a privat beach near by. It costs 40 euros per day for two sunbeds, umbrella and changing room. You don't really expect that when in a luxury hotel. The reception staff are very kind, very helpful and very professional. The restaurant staff are mostly grumpy. The bar staff are friendly and knowledgable. The wifi was poor. All in all, we had a pleasant stay but we would not stay there again. In our opinion the hotel is overpriced.

Review 41:We spent 7 nights in the hotel. They have very good breakfast, the best location in Portovenere and good food and drinks in the restaurant.

Review 42:Everything was amazing. We ended up missing our train because the airline lost our luggage, they held our room till be arrived at 7am. The staff was great. The view and location was breath taking. A great start to our honeymoon.

Review 43:Wifi was a bit patchy

Review 44:Amazing terrace overlooking the harbour. Wonderful breakfast and cocktails at night. Modern, beautiful hotel with free parking underneath

Review 45:WiFi was pretty slow but the staff was helpful and even allowed me to connect to their personal wifi to get a project complete. Our room (top floor) was a little small but it had a great balcony

Review 46:Views of the city from the room and from their terrace where daily breakfast is served are Amazing. Room was fairly modern and the staff was very friendly.

Review 47:Nothing - it was truly fabulous.

Review 48:Everything. For anyone wanting to do the 5 Terre that is accustomed to a five-star experience - I believe this hotel to be the only viable option. Stay here and see the 5 Terre by boat or train.

Review 49:Renovated building, extra clean and friendly rooms. The stuff is outstanding friendly, and good language skills! Breathtaking view from the rooms, excellent location.

Review 50:We put towels on the floor and we found them arranged as cleaned, plenty of hair. That was disgusting. When we were leaving we have been waiting the concierge in the garage but he didn't arrive with our lugage, he left it on the reception??

Review 51:Location, sea view, room. Terrace for breakfast.

Review 52:Two tier system for guests - manager openly admitted he had authority so would take guests off tables in favour of others - those who booked direct through hotel not treated as well. Room beautifully appointed but so small one of us had to sit on bed whilst other walked round. Air con. controlled centrally so rooms hot. Wi fi poor but may not be a problem if you want a break from technology! Hotel try to charge extra for hiring sun beds but will waiver this if you complain. They also put a huge mark up on boat hire - just go to the same provider they use, wooden cabin just under hotel.

Review 53:Amazing views from restaurant/bar Parking at hotel Cocktail bar - drinks may seem pricey but it's worth it for the views and great selection of canapés that come too!

Review 54:Gorgeous view from our room. Food and Beverage Manager (cannot remember his name) was excellent as was the rest of the restaurant staff. Really good variety of food at breakfast. They even had a juicer. Wonderful to have complimentary parking.

Review 55:Nothing, all perfect!

Review 56:Gorgeus, very beautiful keeping the style of the local buildings. The service is great, everyone helps you and are very nice. The restaurants terrace has the best view of Portovenere. Close to the beach, and to every interesting place in town.

Review 57:The staff of the brekfast terrace need to be encouraged to be friendlier and less grumpy.

Review 58:The hotel location is unbeatable in Porto venere. The front desk staff as well as the manager of the brekfast r wrasse were friendly and very helpful.

Review 59:the price is a bit high for the area, the hotel does not have any beach facilities or outdoor space to relax. (the hotel can help you to book for a sunbed at the nearby beach place but it costs 40europer day! that was just ridiculous)

Review 60:the perfect location in Portovenere (bus stop and ferry stop just right in front of the hotel), the amazing view from my room and the restaurant, delicious food, comfy bed and super clean room, wifi also working fine, the helpful and friendly staff.

Review 61:we expected swimming but it is only offered 11/2 kilometres away and then at a cost of 25 euros per person. To have a bath in the bathroom we had to upgrade in what was already an expensive hotel.

Review 62:Limited wifi reception, which is probably understandable in a relatively small village.

Review 63:Clean, comfortable hotel with great outlook along Portovenere Boardwalk and buildings as well as castle and harbour. Next to Cinque Terre and La Spezia ferry pier. Breakfast overlooking the village is special

Review 64:Portovenere was amazing and the grand hotel is in the center of it all. Staff was incredible. We had passed the parking garage and the attendant let us drive in the exit rather than circle around. Front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. One of our favorite stops.

Review 65:There is a clear distinction between the capabilities of the restaurant staff (in general the women are far superior).

Review 66:Location Service (baggage from and to car, very capable reception staff, clean rooms) Parking included

Review 67:The design of the hotel which I believe has recently been refurbished, lacks a centre and feeling of identity. The room we had was ok but surprisingly for this standard of hotel lacked details that make a stay really comfortable and easy, for instance no shaving/magnifying mirror in the bathroom and also badly placed shower door. On the morning we left our final experience of our stay was spoiled by the waitress. I had to go looking for her to ask for another coffee. Her response was rather surly, as if this was an unusual request. She carried on folding napkins which was apparently a more important task. I saw her appear and disappear a couple of times but no sign of coffee. We waited for more than 5 minutes by which time I had finished my croissant and we had to leave as we had a long journey ahead. It was upsetting to have our stay ended on such a sour note.

Review 68:The location is very good. The star feature for me was the restaurant/ bar terrace overlooking the harbour where we ate the night we arrived. Most staff were pleasant and welcoming

Review 69:It was all good

Review 70:Sea views from massive ceiling to floor windows, wonderful staff who spoke English well. Excellent choices for gluten free breakfast. Ferry to cinque terra villages outside of hotel

Review 71:A very interesting historical town without the number of tourists or difficulties of the towns in the Cinque Terra. Numerous good restaurants and local attractions. A short boat trip to Cinque Terra from right outside the door.

Review 72:I enjoyed everything about this hotel. Fabulous location with beautiful views of the water enhanced by a row of ceiling to floor windows right across the room for an uninterrupted view. The perfect place to enjoy breakfast, being gluten free,no problems plenty to choose from. The hotel is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, sights and the ferries to the villages of the cinque terra run directly from the front of the hotel. Can't go without mentioning wonderful staff helped in so many differnt ways and extremely friendly, efficient and spoke very good English.

Review 73:Air conditioning is controlled by reception. No pool. Beach not great. Restaurant good but limited menu. Maitre de could be more professional.

Review 74:Room and view were great. Facilities and staff on the while were very good. Evening restaurant staff could be improved as maitre de a little unprofessional.

Review 75:Lack of wellness centre Lack of a mirror in the main room

Review 76:Excellent hotel to explore portovenere and cinque terre area , the staff are very friendly and helpful and the hotel has excellent location to the nearby towns and close to portovenere restaurants and shops , we really enjoyed it and will certainly come back to this beautiful place

Review 77:The staff does not make an effort to be friendly or even polite sometimes - in the breakfast that was more evident.

Review 78:Excellent infrastructure, clean bedroom, great bath.

Review 79:Amazing hotel - great location with a fantastic terrace overlooking Portovenere. Modern and spacious rooms. Superb breakfast and dinners on the terrace. Very good food at restaurant. Reserved parking underneath was very handy.

Review 80:This is a beautiful small seaport with charm and a significant history of 2000 years. The drive from La Spezia was easy, and parking -- it turns out -- was right before the hotel. Spectacular views and had a great dinner from the patio (and morning breakfast).

Review 81:A little confusing if you arrive by car..don't miss the parking garage on the right.

Review 82:Good location with ferries to visit Cinqe Terre across the street. Nice on site bar/restaurant.

Review 83:King size bed but two separate mattresses. No electric cattle in the room (that costs 540 euro per night).

Review 84:View from our room (Junior Suite with Sea View, room 205), the room itself.

Review 85:The Grand Hotel gives one an experience of what staying at the best boutique hotels in Europe must have been like ... service was over the top charmingly friendly, most accommodating and helpful from arriving late on our first night and keeping the restaurant open (great place for dinner, breakfast buffet wih gluten free and dairy free options including soya cappuccinos and drinks on the terrace before dinner) suggesting and answering questions before we arrived and while there. There were 5 of us in our party ( including 2 university age) and they were able to accommodate 3 people in the junior suite with a very comfortable extra bed made up in the sitting room. Have been to cinque terre area before and did all the hikes and stayed in one of the villages and would definitely say staying at Portovenere especially at this hotel provides one with the most range of activity experiences whether you are seeking total relaxation having drinks and writing on the terrace to hiking (including access to some longer trails and the beaches and trails of the nearby islands as well as access to cinque terre by boat just steps from the hotel). Transfers from La Spezia train station to the hotel is also very easy by either taxi or bus. Fittingly " Hotel California" was playing the morning of our departure..definitely a place you would be happy to " never leave"!

Review 86:Internet rather weak. Price/value rather high Special attention: pictures of the rooms on booking.com do not fit to what they want to put you in. Long discussions were necessary at checkin. But finally the reception staff agreed and was helpful to find a room matching expectations.

Review 87:Staff helpfull. Loction beautiful.

Review 88:Bathtub didn't drain properly, meaning it slowly filled up as you showered. One of the pillows had some slightly yellow/brown areas. Granted it was very slight and hardly noticeable, but I'm picky and prefer it to be completely white. Location-wise, being in Portovenere isn't ideal to travelling to Cinque Terre as there isn't a direct train to/from there.

Review 89:Good location for visiting Portovenere. Right on the shore and next to the ferry stop. Breakfast was good and had an incredible view of the waters.

Review 90:We had to request another room (corner room - same price)even though it was readily available. It was not offered at check in. Since the hotel seemed fairly empty and we paid 400 euros per night I did not expect to have to ask for it. The first room had a table from the restaurant directly in front of the balcony. No spa, no swimming pool. Plumbing noise of water from toilet and shower above was loud. It did wake us up. Although the staff was pleasant previous reviews indicated exceptional service. I did not experience anything out of the ordinary. Very small bathroom, no tub.

Review 91:Beautiful view. Location provided easy access to Cinque Terre by boat. Parking.

Review 92:The hotel is really nice and situated directly in the Portovenere Marina. The room view is breath taking. I strongly recommend staying at this hotel.

Review 93:the restaurant and bar floor would benefit from some art on the walls.

Review 94:The view is to die for. The hotel just makes you feel good. Everything from beds, shower to breakfast and dinner is excellent. And parking is a big plus! Portovenere is a quiet retreat after visiting the very busy Cinque Terre villages

Review 95:The hotel has a parking space which was not easy to find so we had to go round Portovenere 3 times before we found it

Review 96:The hotel was renewed last year therefore is brand new and really nice hotel with Malin + Goetz toiletries which was a very nice surprise

Review 97:Location was excellent, staff were VERY helpful. Unfortunately didn't have time to check out the food as we only stayed one night. But we will visit again.

Review 98:This place is magic. 5* all the way. Service is impeccable. They literally treat you like royalty. The view from the room was extraordinary...I wish I lived here!!

Review 99:Very nice friendly personnel, perfectly situated at the harbor. A little bit costly, but worth it if you want to spoil yourself e.g. over a weekend! Delicious breakfast!

Review 100:I would rate this as the nicest hotel in the Cinque Terre. Certainly the nicest in Portevenere, which is the beginning (or the end, depending on which way you walk) of the trail. The hotel was luxurious unlike most of its alternatives. My wife and I were very comfortable and safe. The food was excellent and the staff beseeching to assist us in any way. A must stay if in the area.

Review 101:Restaurant was a bit disorganised and staff in the restaurant in the evening not as good as rest of the hotel.

Review 102:Location, view from our room, comfort, fantastic breakfasts overlooking the harbour on the terrace.

Review 103:Room was a bit small and facing courtyard which was not a nice view. I think it was getting ready to be renovated.....I hope.

Review 104:Great location to see Cinque Terre and islands. Comfortable beds, good food and nice patio for breakfast. Dinner was fantastic!!

Review 105:One night there was a bit of smoke smell in our bathroom, but this was minor and probably only due to someone smoking at the air intake outside. The shower panel had a bit of trouble containing the water from the rain type shower head but again a bit of extra towels on the floor and it was no big deal.

Review 106:The location was excellent, you have to take a bus (or taxi) from La Spezia but the bus stops right at the side of the hotel and the ferry to Cinque Terre is just opposite as well. The breakfast was wonderful, lots of choices, etc. The Junior Suite we stayed in had a lovely little covered balcony from which we had a terrific view of the town at sunrise and at sunset it was spectacular.

Review 107:The wifi is a little weak and the breakfast slightly inconsistent.

Review 108:The hotel is a gem! Beautiful location, breathtaking views, and a walking distance from all the sites. Even the boat to Cinque Terre is just in front of the hotel. It was an amazing experience!!

Review 109:Near-by little harbour may be a bit noisy even during the night. VPN connection based on the Hotel's WiFi failed.

Review 110:Breath taking view from the terrace. Newly renovated and spacious room, bathroom well equipped. Very friendly and helpful staff. Parking facility valet service. Free (open) WiFi.

Review 111:Very Picturesque and wonderful location. Each morning the view took our breath away. Breakfast on the terrace, warm sea breezes, wonderful restaurant, great rooms and bathrooms, welcoming staff. What more could you ask for?

Review 112:The hotel had only been open for 2 months after a major renovation. We were delighted when we were upgraded to a front room with a beautiful view of the port. Very comfortable bed with lovely fresh linen, large room with high quality furnishings, large opening windows, brand new bathroom with high quality fittings. Very secure hotel and area. Very helpful reception staff and friendly restaurant/bar staff. Breakfast was wonderful with a huge choice of fresh fruits, hot foods, breads and pastries as well as meats and cheeses. We ate in the restaurant one night and were very pleased with the food and service. The local oysters were the best I have ever tasted. Portovenere is situated in a much quieter and very beautiful part of the Cinque Terre, is easy to get to from the La Spezia train station by taxi (around E35) or by the nearby local bus. The daily ferries to the islands, La Spezia and the Cinque Terre go from the port in front of the hotel. Portovenere has lots of lovely shops and restaurants as well as lovely old areas to explore.

Review 113:The width of the entrance to the parking garage. That's it.

Review 114:The moment we entered the hotel, we knew it was special. Immaculate and wonderful staff. Meghan and Irene were spectacular and extremely helpful with our check-in and arrangements. The restaurant was excellent in food quality and service. Again a very helpful and courteous staff.

Review 115:Very little. Restaurant in the evening was a little disorganised and service not very welcoming

Review 116:The central location, the view, breakfast on the terrace overlooking the harbour, big beds, air conditioning, spacious rooms

Review 117:parking garage....don't expect to drive anywhere. Initially, it was a strange set up, felt like being in a cave, but once settled in, it was a great place.

Review 118:Room was light, spacey, updated and clean. Close to center of portovenere and easy access to cinque terre by boat.

Review 119:Room 301 - waste pipes within inches of bed means you hear every flush/bath/shower from floor above all night.

Review 120:Lovely little fishing port, hotel on quayside with views of harbour. Excellent restaurant - good value. Staff very friendly & helpful.

Review 121:I would prefer a sauna or an other relaxing activity.

Review 122:The Hotel and the Service are great. Stuffs are friendly and help in each case. the breakfast is gut quality but get boring after more than 5 days

Review 123:The wifi connection in the room was poor (in the common area wifi was ok)

Review 124:Breath taking view from the terrace, great room, plenty of space, great bathroom, amazing breakfast buffet, friendly, lovely and helpful staff, an amazing stay!! We will come back for sure!!
