Reviews for Hotel Villa Sonia
Review 1:Staying at villa Sonia was meant to be the highlight of our holiday but it was very disappointing. The hotel is in need of a serious overhaul. The furniture is heavy, gloomy and shabby. The decor is dingy. Quality of breakfast was poor. The shower cubicle needed a good scrub. When we arrived we were told that the restaurant wasn't open which was a surprise and a disappointment. There were very few guests and we would have been served breakfast in our small, depressing bedroom if we had not objected. Don't stay here at the end if the season.
Review 2:The position of the hotel is good and the reception and breakfast staff were helpful. The complimentary shuttle service was also a bonus and appreciated as taxi fares to Taormina are quite expensive.
Review 3:The food was over priced and poor. I had to send my meal back because it was cold and when they served it again it was overcooked. The vegetables (4 euros a serving) was just a spoonful of very overcooked vegetables. My husbands steak was more rare than medium done (which is how we asked it to be cooked) and then it took a further 10 minutes to bring him his vegetables which meant his steak was cold. Desserts were served on a table, you had to help yourself.(6.50 euros). The chocolate mouse was served in a tin foil dish that you might use on picnic. There were very few staff around, therefore when you wanted something you had to look for staff. This was meant to be a 4 star hotel. Not impressed!!
Review 4:The location was fabulous and that was the hotels saving grace
Review 5:Not everyone would enjoy the drive up to Castelmola , but worth it for the peace
Review 6:Excellent dinners , special dishes prepared for gluten free Beautiful terrace /pool area Good parking
Review 7:Never order default coffee, after two weeks of italian coffee around the island you can not drink that coffee. You have to ask explicitly for espresso or capuccino.
Review 8:We liked the hotel for its view. Yoy can see Etna either from your room (extra cost) or from the breakfast area.
Review 9:Dinner was very disappointing. Fruit at breakfast was not fresh. Light in bedroom was very dim.
Review 10:The location with fantastic views of Etna. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 11:Paid parking; very poor wifi; no AC in warm October in room; poor ventilation; musty smell; cold eggs each day for breakfast; too many rules about what is forbidden; no bottles of water provided free; no kettle in room.
Review 12:The location of this hotel is terrific. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The pool is lovely. The dinner we had at the hotel was very good and nicely served.
Review 13:Hotel is very nice and situated in amazing location. The service was very nice and helpfull (we had a health problem and the help was immediate, thank you:)). The room was nice and clean. We would like to go back to Sicily and will definitely choose the Hotel Villa Sonia.
Review 14:Some of the property is a little 'tired' and in need of a spruce up (e.g. poolside furniture and cushions)
Review 15:Stunning views of Etna. Quiet location, friendly staff, good quality 'homely' food. All the floors washed every day, so hotel is spotless.
Review 16:wifi only worked in the lobby and the pool bar could stay open longer
Review 17:Staff were extremely helpful. Wonderful location and great breakfasts Castelmola a must see
Review 18:Swimming pool closes at 6.30pm, it would be nice if it stayed open later so you can use if you have been out for the day. The hotel bar isn't staffed all day so there are points when you aren't able to buy drinks etc. It is a wonderful hotel but for 4* I would expect a proper bar etc.
Review 19:The hotel had the most incredible view of Mount Etna. Great location in Castelmola, away from Taormina which gets very busy although close enough to explore. Castelmola has plenty of bars / restaurants.
Review 20:Air conditioning in the room was poor. We had to ask for things which were stated as included in the room rate e.g. tea & coffee making facilities, bath robes, a safe lock. The breakfast adequate but not special.
Review 21:The location was spectacular & we liked the proximity to Castelmola for eating in the evening. The swimming pool was good. the reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly which sold it for us.
Review 22:We stayed in a cottage in the gardens which was advertised as being an "upgrade" from the normal rooms, but whilst the cottage itself was fine and had lovely views of Etna, the walk from the cottage to the pool/main hotel was very steep with lots of steps and generally wasn't very well looked after and dirty in places. We needed reception to transport our luggage down and back up in a car. There was supposed to be a small pool area for use with the cottages but this was dirty/unused. The "small gym" advertised was just an old treadmill located outside the hotel's plant room which didn't work. The poolside bar/restaurant was very nice but we were left waiting for long periods of time when there were no staff serving - sometimes up to 30 minutes and you literally had to go wandering round the hotel looking for someone to come and serve you. Breakfast was great if you turned up early (served from 7.30am) but if you fancied a lie in and didn't get to breakfast until 9.30am then there was very little left (which defeats the object of serving it until 1030am).
Review 23:Staff were very friendly and the location is superb with some of the best views of Etna you will get on the whole Island. If you want peace and quiet it is perfect but you still have a few bars and restaurants within walking distance. If you wanted to experience the busy/lively/tourist haven in Taormina centre then the hotel offered a free shuttle service at various times during the day. Buses also passed right outside the hotel entrance. The swimming pool was lovely and then views of Etna from the pool area was stunning.
Review 24:Hotel shuttle to Taormina is only a couple times a day, and has to be booked in advance. It is worth simply taking the city bus (3 euro for a return ticket). Getting to Villa Sonia from the Catania airport can be complicated, if using the busses, but worth the money saved.
Review 25:Villa Sonia has some of the most incredible views in the area. Facing toward Mt.Etna, if you get a balcony view facing the right way, it is breathtaking. Though the hotel is located a bit far from Taormina, they provide a shuttle bus - there is also a much more frequent city bus that travels all day, and isn't expensive. Further, it is a short walk up to Castelmola, which is an amazing spot on its own. For 9 euro each, you can also get a shuttle bus straight from the hotel down to the beach, where you will be given beach chairs & umbrella at a well serviced location. The hotel itself has a surprisingly good restaurant, which greatly reduces the stress of having to find a restaurant every night. The pool is well kept, room service was great, and the staff were all friendly. Villa Sonia also comes with a breakfast, which has a large assortment of foods, including some hot foods. This hotel is perhaps one of the best in the Taormina area, considering cost, scenery, and quality of services.
Review 26:No bad experience - the 2nd smaller pool next to the Garden Rooms is unappealing and not that well serviced; however it's not needed as the main pool is great.
Review 27:Fantastic location with views of Etna from rooms and pool. Location on the edge of Castelmola is a short walk uphill to good restaurants/bars for meals. Free hotel minibus to Taormina.
Review 28:No food in hotel policy was ridiculous and there was only 4 of the 12 available tv stations that actually worked and 3 of them were international news- not good enough for a 4 star hotel
Review 29:Pool was excellent and location was close to bus stop. Room was very comfortable and good size
Review 30:While the staff are pleasant and trying their best, the management seems to be trying to save money but not having enough on duty. We ate in the hotel once and it was expensive and very mediocre compared with restaurants nearby. The policy of not allowing guests to take food and drinks into their room is cheeky when they are charging two euros for a small bottle of water from the minibar. Overall, the management seem penny pinching, which does not make the place welcoming. We would have spent more there if they had had a better attitude to customers.
Review 31:The room and pool were very clean. We liked sitting on our balcony with the view of Mount Etna.
Review 32:Bar facilities.
Review 33:All staff at reception were very polite and helpful. Balcony setting is perfect for an evening drink (need an experienced bar person).
Review 34:There is not much to do there without a car. Poor WI-FI performance.
Review 35:Clean, spacious room. View (if you are lucky to have good weather). Friendly staff. Breakfast.
Review 36:Superb location with great views over mount etna. Recommend booking a room with the Etna view. Easy walking distance to Castelmola which has a good selection of restaurants.
Review 37:No gym - the facility mentioned was a cheap walking machine no good for running and stuck in a corridor.
Review 38:Fabulous view of Etna. Free shuttle bus to Taormina not frequent but the local bus was more regular and cheap
Review 39:On the first night, there were thunderstorms and rain flooded our room. the caretaker was outside for 4-5 hours mopping up to manage it. no sleep. no refund given/offered, told to compain to booking.com
Review 40:The garden houses are a bit far away from the main hotel which makes it a bit tough when the weather is a bit whet!
Review 41:We had the luck of being invited during our stay to join a group of guests in a wine harvest day with a reward of joining in a barbecue lunch with the owners. A super day with some super people!
Review 42:location - far from Taomina and from the beach. that's why we decided to moev to another hotel after 1 night. better to be close to the beach and to the city
Review 43:decoration view big balcony breakfast wonderful atmosphere and relaxing
Review 44:Meals were of a low standard. Breakfast was poor - no fresh juices, boiled eggs like bullets, tasteless melon and slow replenishment of hot items. Dinner was worse and we only sampled it once preferring cuisine in Castlemola itself. I think they need a new chef and more friendly restaurant staff.
Review 45:The location is very good but Castlemola is atop a mountain so not easily accessible - very twisty narrow roads. The village itself is very nice with several restaurants, shops etc. and good views. Staff on reception are very friendly and accommodating.
Review 46:WiFi quality, irregular shuttle buses to Taormina
Review 47:Magnificent views from this hilltop hotel, great breakfast, great restaurant service, attentive and helpful staff
Review 48:Room was at road level, a bit of noise from passing vehicles.
Review 49:Nice selection for breakfast on a lovely terrace with etna views. Hotel interior nicely decoration with antique furniture and artifacts. Pool and sun deck with beautiful etna views. Good restaurants in Castelmola.
Review 50:There was nothing to dislike.
Review 51:The staff were excellent. Location and accessibility to busses was ideal. There were no hidden cost. The restaurants which were suggested to us were fantastic.
Review 52:First "cottage" room stank of stagnant water Wifi did not work Floorboards buckled up in second room Walls were so thin that we were woken up each time neighbours used their bathroom Poor breakfast. Shuttle bus to Taormina full at 1000, next time 1545 and then 2100 - inconvenient times (too early and too late) WORST of all, a 200-person wedding held one floor down and directly outside our bedroom until 2.30 am! With cleaners then making noise until 3.30am.
Review 53:Position in Castelmola and view of Etna
Review 54:We arrived late so we didn't manage to go into the pool. We were like anyone else stunned by the view. It was definitely worth the price. But I had to say for the price of the room we were i little disappointed of the rooms interior. Especially the bathroom had we expected a little more luxury. But we loved the balcony with the amazing view.
Review 55:Wifi connexion is poor from the rooms but not such an issue. Pool is closing at 6:30.
Review 56:Rooms in the garden are very quiet. The view and the quietness of the place. The nice village, not as much crowded as Taormina.
Review 57:Garden suites are neglected, mildewed and run down. Exterior is dirty and unkempt. They were advertised with "shower or tub" but none had a tub. No WiFi available in the Garden Suites. Service at breakfast was spotty.
Review 58:Main hotel is beautiful and apparently well maintained. Service at reception was excellent.
Review 59:This was our second visit to Villa Sonia and we was not dissapointed. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the food is excellent!! Breakfast/Lunch/Evening Meal. Castelmola is so beautiful and within easy access to Taormina for more lively atmosphere.
Review 60:You couldn't get anything to eat after 2:30 pm till 6:30, no snacks or ice cream and The hotel was a bit too quiet, people tended to not stay for long periods.
Review 61:It was an interesting hotel with all it's antiques and comfy sitting areas and staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent room service and views.
Review 62:The place feels rather empty (end of July) - I counted only 5 staff for this big hotel. Wifi is bad, and around 18.30 you get chased away from the pool area. Breakfast is ok, but could be better. The hotel gives the impression of a 'place to sleep only'
Review 63:The location is superb; very nice panoramic view and close to the center of Castelmola
Review 64:Room windows opened onto the street and the Swimming pool was small
Review 65:The scenery/view was breathtaking and the staff were very helpful. Food was also very good.
Review 66:Very poor WIFI connection Long walk to Cottages in the harsh summer sun. Cleanliness not optimal, especially in showers.
Review 67:Beautiful location, Free Shuttle service to Taormina Helpful Staff.
Review 68:The only slight niggle (and that is trying to find something that is not good) was the poor wi-fi in our room. It was OK in the main reception areas though. Castelmola is on the top of a hug rock outcrop that is accessed by a winding road but there is a frequent bus service for those that do not fancy the drive.
Review 69:The views to Etna were stunning. Breakfast was very good and enhanced by that great view. The mini bus shuttle service to Taormina. Staff were very helpful and always smiling. The pool area was a big advantage if you do not want to travel down to the sea. Our room, bathroom and terrace were of the highest standard and very clean. This is one of the best hotel's we have stayed in.
Review 70:- Wi-Fi, has problems with connectivity in rooms as well as channel bandwith. Even in you would be lucky to connect to router, you still would have nothing until nearly 10-11 p.m. when guests will go asleep. There is also the same problem with cell phones in the area near hotel. The mobile net actually exists, but works very unstable, most of the time spent in your room there would be no connection at all. If you need to stay on-line, be prepared for serious problems. - Location. Consider carefully location before you go. I rented a car for the whole stay period, but even with this driving very windy road several times a day is very tiresome. Castelmola is very small, there are a few restaurants, and if you decide to go down to Taormina, be ready to pay 2 Euro per hour for parking. There is almost no free parking in Taormina and nearby beaches. The problem become much worse on weekends. There is free shuttle service from hotel 3 times a day but the last return is about 9 p.m. Wasp or bees! Very small, but very annoying. That was not only my problem, there were days, when most of the guests were almost forced to go inside from this beautiful terrace during the breakfast, cause it was almost literally impossible to eat. I think, hotel should do something, the problem is laughable, but still dissapointing a little. The only dissapointing thing about breakfasts were juices. It looks like their concentration was highly dependend on the number of guests. The more guests on breakfast, the more water in juices.
Review 71:- staff, may be one of the most helpful and friendly among all hotels I stayed before. - stunning views of mount Etna from hotel terrace and rooms; - hotel design; - spottless clean rooms; - variety on breakfast was good; - location in very beutiful and quiet area.
Review 72:Nothing
Review 73:Staff, we were upgrade to a room with a view of mount Etna. Castlemola is lovely, great restaurants. We were leaving early and an early breakfast was provided.
Review 74:The location of the Hotel Villa Sonia in Castelmola is perfect. One can feel like at home, in a calm and safe place. The medieval village of Castelmola is nice and beatiful, located on the top of the roof of Sicily with astonishing Etna views - yet close to the sea. Beatiful village of Taormina is nearby. The staff is very professional, helpful and friendly at the same time. Nice pool and tarace. Nice food and drinks. Perfect resting ara with very comfortable sofas. Spacious rooms with beatiful views overlooking Etna. Castelmola is calm and so magic that no wonder that many great personalities loved to stay there. Sir Winston Churchill for example loved to enjoy the local almond wine at San Giorgio Bar nearby. Highly recommended !
Review 75:WiFi Not always available in swimming pool Ares., Beach is à 30 min. Trip.
Review 76:View, castelmola, rooms
Review 77:Leak in the toilet, problem wasn't resolved the way that we were expecting.
Review 78:Great location, fantastic views.
Review 79:The wifi will drop off if you aren't in a good area
Review 80:This hotel is absolutely charming
Review 81:This hotel was perfect, the location, the view, the service, the terrace with the room, the room itself and the breakfast. Nothing bad to say.
Review 82:excellent location, stunning views. Hotel was very comfortable. Staff looked after your every need. wonderful.
Review 83:Great experience all the way through. Lovely dinner in the restaurant and a great day at the pool.
Review 84:No particular dislikes
Review 85:Very helpful staff, good breakfasts. Splendid location, although tricky drive up from the town. Bus service very useful.
Review 86:Dinners were below average. Breakfast was good.
Review 87:Location and view. We had an excellent view of Mt Etna
Review 88:Breakfast was OK but monotonous. Similar offerings throughout week.
Review 89:Pool.Staff.Location.
Review 90:The staff was very helpful. Good pool. Convenient to city.
Review 91:Food was just barely fair and staff in the dining area was indifferent.
Review 92:Location in a perched village with an excellent view of Mt Etna.
Review 93:Unusual and dramatic location. Spacious, clean, well-equipped rooms. Balcony with exceptional views. Very helpful staff (English speaking).
Review 94:Wifi.
Review 95:Nice location between 2 mountain peaks. Great views into the mountain peaks and the sea. Helpfull staff that speaks proper English.
Review 96:Very beautiful view, very nice swimmingpool, lovely terrasse, small beutiful village
Review 97:Restaurant
Review 98:Location Friendliness and helpfulness of the staff
Review 99:a bit too expensive though. Even don't think to go there if you don't have/rent a car or if you want to have the sea or night life just near. The road to the hotel is not only curvy but quite long so if you stay more than 3 days it can become tiring. You can use the bus but the last one from the town is 21.30. It was not a drawback for us personally but jut take into consideration. We more disliked the very poor breakfasts - scrambled eggs, bekon, sausages, ham, cheese and eggs you need to boil. Youghurt. All the same each day. There was no blanket in the room and we got cold first night, one shampoo for both - good we had our own. Finding a good beach in the region can be a problem - either privat or public but paid and overcrowded
Review 100:Great view - from the restaurant, sw pool and some rooms you can see Etna and beautiful landscape - hills and the sea. Very calm place as far away from Taormina, no tourists, no noises - just nature and you. Great interior - the owner seems to be a collectioner of different ancient stuff, good chance to see and touch a bit of the regional history. Friendly staff
Review 101:We only stayed for one night. And oh, do not use the gps coordinates for navigation, as they are incorrect and lead you to another mountain, other village...
Review 102:What a view!! Lovely pool! Restaurant was fine. We loved our stay here and thought it was one of the most romantic places we have ever visited.
Review 103:WiFi was very spotty. After first night it didn't work in my room at all. A/C was not good, but luckily it was cool and breezy enough to just open the windows. For the price, I thought you really shouldn't have to pay extra for things like using the sauna, or jacuzzi, or the beach.
Review 104:Location is excellent, what a beautiful view! The staff were all very friendly and professional, the food was excellent, pool was great.
Review 105:Can't think of anything ..
Review 106:We liked everything....service, food, spectacular view of Mt Etna. It isa great place to relax and you are a short walk to Castelmola ..... Whocould ask for anything more...
Review 107:We were there early in the tourist season when the hotel a la carte menu was not available yet. The food was good but limited choice
Review 108:We will remember our staying at this hotel forever mostly because of the excellent crevice. The hotel staff is there to help assist you on every need you have. The Etna volcano view from the hotel is breath taking. If we will come back to Taormina Castelmola Villa Sonia hotel is the place we will book again
Review 109:A minor point but, why can't they provide fresh juice with breakfast when the fruit is literally falling off the trees all around...!
Review 110:Excellent views - make sure you get a room with a view of Etna Great food options within 5 minutes walk Very helpful and accommodating staff
Review 111:the wifi didn't cover our room.
Review 112:All staff were very helpful. Castle loa was a lovely village. Fabulous views from the balcony. Great place to head back to after a day out.
Review 113:A wonderful hotel. We always feel welcome and so well looked after. The staff are very friendly ,attentive and professional. Facilities excellent, cuisine delicious. We loved the freshly squeezed sicilian orange juice for breakfast. We have stayed here a few times and would recommend it without hesitation.
Review 114:nothing!
Review 115:Free upgrade to a superior room Friendly and welcoming staff Amazing views of Mount Etna from room balcony Choice of food at breakfast Excellent poolside view and seating area Good shower and comfortable bed Parking availability
Review 116:Table charge of 4 Euro per person for dinner in a hotel was quite a surprise for us.
Review 117:Great view from balcony, spacious room and terrasse, tasteful and well maintained hotel areas and interior, delicious dinner courses, helpful staff (though not always available)
Review 118:Taormina is very touristy and commercialized. The hotel restaurant was rather pricey.
Review 119:This Villa has a country-house atmosphere with lovely polished antique furniture throughout, and superb views of Etna. The staff speak good English and were very attentive to our needs. We were glad we were located in Castelmola rather than down in Taormina with all the crowds.Good breakfasts with choice of cooked or cold meats, cheeses and pastries. Very nice swimming pool and sun terrrace with plenty of sun beds. Castelmola is very attractive with breath-taking views and a good choice of restaurants and pizzerias..
Review 120:No coffee/tea making facilities in rooms. Although not important to us, others may feel that only CNN and BBC World TV channels aren't enough
Review 121:The peace and quiet after busy days in Taormina. Also we chose a room with view of Etna and a balcony - well worth the extra charge
Review 122:Get ready for a nerve racking drive up to the top of the hill if coming by car!
Review 123:Incredible location much better than staying in overcrowded toameana. Spectacular views overlooking Mt Etna and the coast. A simple but steep walk or a free shuttle bus to and from town was perfect and convenient. Cheap parking onsite.
Review 124:none
Review 125:Perched high above Taormina and with a great view of the Etna, this place is incredible. It is within walking distance to the quaint centre of Castelmola and offers courtesy coaches down to Taormina - therefore you do not need to drive down there. Just leave the car with the valet and pick it up when you check out. Very helpful staff and clean rooms.
Review 126:- the location!!! they should indicate that "above Taormina" means 6km of steep slopes. - cushions at the pool ,sauna+ whirlpool not included - to be paid add.(??) - a lot of wasps outside:they have a magnificent terrace with amazing view but unfortunally not to be used - old small shower, not even worth a 2** rating - rooms very bad isolated so a lot of noice of neighbours - for +100€/night you can find something similar downtownTaormina
Review 127:- bus stop in front - large rooms - helpfull staff - free shuttle to Taormina and beach.
Review 128:Our room was fitted out with period furniture, while this added to the overall character of the Hotel, it was not that practical, the shower was also very small. The drive up to the Hotel from the motorway was also very challenging but worth the effort once there. During our stay there was little or no use made of the bar in the evenings after dinner service.
Review 129:All the hotel staff spoke good English, always tried to help and provided good service to make our stay an enjoyable experience. The hotel is in good order, the pool and other facilities were always available for use whenever required
Review 130:Wasps were around when eating breakfast on the terrace and made it notpossible to sit out there. When paying reasonable money for a hotel Idon't think you should be charged additional money to sit on asunbed!! The exercise facilities consisted of an old treadmill
Review 131:The hotel was in a fantastic location with views over to Mt Etna- thepool setting was excellent
Review 132:Can't think of any?
Review 133:The hotel and rooms are very well appointed and the hotel members of staff, without exception, were both helpful and very supportive, from arranging a special dietary meal from the restaurant for my wife to making bookings on our behalf for a visit to the volcanic island of Stromboli. The views of Mount Etna from the balconies and pool are truly wonderful. The hotel is set very high above the main town and if you are visiting by car, be sure to use the GPS coordinates to locate the hotel. I’d have no problems in strongly recommending this hotel to others.
Review 134:The only cons was the coffe for breakfast, not what I expect in Italy...
Review 135:Everything was great! Fantastic view and nice breathtaking area.Transportation to Taormina very convinient and free of charge service.Otherwise perfect for relaxing but close to the busy Taormina
Review 136:Everything was fine.
Review 137:Staff were very helpful in recommending other restaurants, how to get to places, time to airport etc. Breakfasts were lovely on the terrace overlooking Etna. Castelmola itself is delightful. Toarmina verypretty.Restaurant was good value for money, good choice, and staff very pleasant.
