Reviews for Fontebella

Review 1:The front desk staff was outstanding, very professional and friendly. He accommodated every request we had. The room was spectacular. It was a two story suite with space for six! The view to the valley was breathtaking. We will definitely go back. The hotel is centrally located and bery easy to get to.

Review 2:Room was pretty loud with the neighbors, but in fairness, there was a college group that were rather loud that may have contributed more than another family would have. Breakfast was pretty average.

Review 3:Staff were great, views from the rooms outstanding. Everyone spoke English well, and we're happy to recommend a good wine that was not overpriced with dinner. Location to access both main basilicas in Assisi was great also.

Review 4:It was all good!

Review 5:Our greeting from Martin, was warm and welcoming. Our room was gracious, with beautiful open views. The bathroom was large and lovely. Awakening to the Assisi church bells was enchanting!

Review 6:Perfect hotel to stay in the beautiful Assisi. Martin (staff) was very kind and gave us good advices. The room for 5 was nice and had an amazing view.

Review 7:No bad experience, just cramped and bed a little to hard for my liking. But I am finding this to be the case all over Italy!

Review 8:We got a parking space right in front of the hotel..not an easy task. The room was quite small for two, bit we did have a million dollar view. The restaurant was magnificent so we ate there both nights in Assisi. Over all, I would recommend this hotel.

Review 9:Bathroom not well equipped with shampoo, toothpaste etc but we really liked the whole, set up.

Review 10:Elegant attractive building, idiosyncratic and yet very well equipped, friendly staff, great convenient location, lovely views over the town and valley. A perfect base for boys holiday.

Review 11:breakfast was a little disappointing - No cooked options available on arrival and then only eggs were offered.

Review 12:Location was great - in the heat of the summer its great to be able to get back to the hotel for a short break before heading out again. The receptionists were knowledgeable and friendly and very helpful.

Review 13:The A/C struggled just a bit during this heat wave we've been having, but staff happy to accommodate by turning it lower (A/C controlled by computer at front desk).

Review 14:Wonderful hotel in heart of Assisi, very close to the basilica. Helpful, friendly staff, good breakfast, clean rooms. The view from the valley side rooms is spectacular.

Review 15:Very friendly staff, good instalations and the best location for everyone who is visiting Assisi. Also consider the fact of having parking in the center of the town.

Review 16:The bed was not that comfortable, and the shower is not as expected from a 4 stars hotel.

Review 17:Great location and excellent view. Comfortable nice place, clean. The staff is very kind and available. They provided us all the information required to make our stay great!

Review 18:The breakfast experience was disappointing for the quality of the hotel. The only fruit on offer were the same wrinkly apples and oranges. If you like cake for breakfast, there were four or five on offer. The croissants were most disappointing for a hotel of this quality. Sadly, there were no tea or coffee making facilities in the bedroom. The garden was available to guests, but sadly the loungers, chairs and tablecloths were covered in bird poop. Such a lack of attention to detail is sad for a hotel of this quality,

Review 19:The view from the 3rd floor bedroom was superb!

Review 20:Nothing.

Review 21:Michelin star restraurant is in BF of the hotel. Portini handmade pasta is very good. Umbria valley view from the room and restaurant is my favorite in Italy. Wifi is good. Hotel staffs are kind. Breakfast is good. Near from bus stop.

Review 22:The room averaged about 84 degrees Fahrenheit day and night. The air-conditioning was not active. The only way to cool the room was to open the window, which let in all the noise from the street. Otherwise, the hotel was very pleasant.

Review 23:Very friendly, very clean, great location.

Review 24:Put do not disturb tag on door and perhaps it flipped over and the maid cleaned our room, taking the sets of Italian coins I was collecting for grandkids. My suggestion: if you do not want your room cleaned, let the staff know personally. Lots of hiking up hills in Assisi...just a suggestion but a list of "clear cut" directions to main sites (walking) would be helpful.

Review 25:Excellent desk staff and breakfast outstanding.

Review 26:Teh staff were friendly & helpful with excellent English. Room was clean and comfortable with great view. Location excellent. The hotel's restaurant is also good.

Review 27:Generally quite dirty, with stains all over the chair and carpet. Hair found on the bed lining, a dead worm on the floor, mould all over the bath tub. Breakfast is of a very poor standard and quality in a very horrible and messy room accompanied by almost absent waiting staff. This hotel may have been a 4 stars when it was originally built but definitely not now. Unfortunately this is a major issue in Umbria and Italy as stars are allocated at one point and standards are not maintained and checked through the years.

Review 28:I loved the time I checked out. Finally out of this nightmare.

Review 29:Very positive experience.

Review 30:Valley view room. Helpful front desk, and a very friendly and helpful head waiter in the restaurant, which I recommend, especially if your legs are tired after a day in town. Location about midway between the 2 major basilicas.

Review 31:-Warm, personable and professional staff members in every aspect! -Accommodations were very clean and comfortable! And the location could not be more convenient! -An expansive and varied breakfast buffet! -It provided us with an experience full of positive and happy memories!

Review 32:A lovely hotel with very friendly staff within a short walk of the Basilica of St. Francis. We were upgraded to a room with an incredible view of the valley. Convenient parking right across the street. A cozy bar & an elegant dining room where we enjoyed a romantic dinner. Very nice breakfast selection.

Review 33:breakfast is very poor and very noisy because of many group tour. breakfast should separate from the group tour. as to air condition(it was cold ), you should explain how to warm the room when we check in.

Review 34:view from the room is very beatiful

Review 35:room a bit too warm for us at night, as the A/C was not available due to the time of year, despite the exceptional weather (not the hotel's fault!)

Review 36:the hotel staff were very helpful, the room very comfortable and well equipped, excellent breakfast and dinner, great views, excellent location

Review 37:The room was large, comfortable and beautifully furnished. The bed linens were soft and the bed cozy. The view was charming. Breakfast had a wide array of choices and the staff was very accomodating.

Review 38:Staff wanted my linen long before check out time The rooms were particularly small and the bathrooms were impossible to shower in if any physical problems existed

Review 39:The location was excellent;

Review 40:Our room was upgraded for free to a room with a spectacular view of the umbrian valley. It was comfortable, clean and had good hot water in the bathroom. The restaurant is outstanding and was the best meal we had in Assisi by far. Staff were always helpful and friendly. The breakfast is an excellent spread. We appreciated the fresh fruit. We had a beautiful stay in this lovely and charming hotel.

Review 41:Great location in Assisi Staff were very helpful and friendly Room was large with great bathroom facilities View from room was majestic - overlooked the countryside Restaurant food and service was great

Review 42:This is a fabulous hotel. There wasn't anything about it we didn't like. The receptionist was welcoming and friendly and then when we walked into the room....that view! It is truly stunning. Make sure you book a valley view room....slightly more than the others but so worth it! The bed was very comfortable, air con excellent and the bathroom fine. We had dinner twice at the restaurant....that view again with the moon coming up....wow! The waiter was lovely and both meals and wine delicious! Try the lasagne with black truffle sauce......

Review 43:The location of this hotel couldn't be better. Our room looked out onto the valley with stunning views of the countryside. The staff were courteous and willing to help with any request.

Review 44:The Air Conditioning isn't controllable in the room. The staff made a point to tell us to call them if we wanted the temperature to change, but we didn't avail ourselves of that.

Review 45:Very good value. Travelling with a family of 5 with the kids older, it can be hard to find enough space at a hotel. The 5(6) bed room was perfect for us. The hotel is located conveniently about half way between the main square (uphill) and the St. Francis church (downhill). Free Breakfast was nice, but I've seen much better. Staff was excellent and very helpful.

Review 46:Nothing

Review 47:The staff were very helpful. Good breakfast. Location was outstanding. Amazing view of the valley! I loved everything about it! I will use the same hotel the next time I am in Assisi!!!! Thank you.

Review 48:Parking for which we had to pay is not safe, other guest slammed door into my car and refused to admit responsability

Review 49:comfortable room and excellent breakfast

Review 50:Not much. It is usually tough to get a family of five in one hotel room. The loft area has the queen size bed and downstairs area had the three twins.

Review 51:Location is great. Shower is really good. View toward the valley was beautiful. Staff was great. Breakfasts were good.

Review 52:very professional and at the same time friendly service

Review 53:Breakfast

Review 54:Michael and staff could not have been nicer. We loved the location and the restaurant next door. Best lasagna!!

Review 55:This hotel is in a great location and our room had stunning views. The staff were really friendly and helpful

Review 56:Beautiful large room with amazing valley views. Staff were excellent.

Review 57:Friendly staff Martin is the best / helpful. The place is fantastic (city)

Review 58:The view from our room was unbeatable! Rooms were nice, and so was the staff

Review 59:WiFi was temperamental

Review 60:The location and Martin

Review 61:The wifi needs to be stronger

Review 62:Staff are really educated and helpful. The restaurant presents excellent cuisine

Review 63:Loved this old hotel in Assisi! Martin was great. We had a wonderful stay exploring the old city.

Review 64:Excellent position ,very friendly Staf Excellent Wifi very clean and parking At the front door.

Review 65:A very cheerful staff, and an excellent restaurant with stunning view as well as good food. Very clean and very central.

Review 66:I was driving and hotel had a spot available in front of the hotel.

Review 67:Great chef lovely view from restaurant

Review 68:Broken air conditioning. Little bit poor breakfast.

Review 69:Place, staff, view, food in restaurant (dinner).

Review 70:Maybe the elevetor is too slow!! :-)

Review 71:The location and the room.

Review 72:The room is really small for 3 persons

Review 73:Good location Good breakfast Excellent staff and service

Review 74:Location, beautiful view from room, accessibility to everything.

Review 75:nothing

Review 76:location, breakfast, staff was so kind.(everything the guy who from Peru;sorry, i can't remember your name) everything.

Review 77:the downstairs breakfast area has no view and feels like a dungeon.

Review 78:the room was very comfortable, and the views were breathtaking.

Review 79:The staff were very helpful and the food and dining were excellent as was the staff. We were on the valley side and it was gorgeous.

Review 80:perfect location for a relaxed stay

Review 81:Good kitchen, excellent location, stunning view from our room.

Review 82:The manager at the front desk lacked hospitality. The private parkingwas full when I arrived. It was ok for me as it was noted on thewebsite that there is not much space. When we were unloading ourbaggages in front of the hotel entrance the manager simply repeatedthat the parking was full and I should leave with my car as soon aspossible, without indicating any public parking nearby. The way hetreated us was very unpleasant(when asking for passports, explainingthe time of breakfast etc.).

Review 83:Very good location.

Review 84:The person who checked us out at the end of our stay couldn't seem to get our credit cards to work. I decided that he didn't really want to take them, because our credit card company always informs us if there is any problem. We tried several different cards, and none of them worked -- or so he said. None of the companies informed us of a denied charge so I believe he was actually lying or completely incompetent. For this reason, I would not choose to stay at this hotel again. I don't mind if they request cash ahead of time (like many places do in Italy), but they shouldn't say they will take a credit card and then not take it.

Review 85:This hotel had much more comfortable beds than many places in which we have stayed in Italy. The person who checked us in was particularly nice and helpful. The breakfast was better than many Italian breakfasts because you had the option of ordering eggs in addition to the items on the buffet. All in all, it was a good place to stay inside the walls of Assisi (but read the negative comments before deciding).

Review 86:It was tricky getting to the main street and uphill to the center.

Review 87:The staff made all the difference here. Lovely hotel/room with great views! And breakfast eggs cooked as ordered.

Review 88:The only thing wrong was breakfast: milk for cereals was warm and long-life (yeuch!); croissants were mass produced and pre-filled; overall the choice was poor. Certainly not a 4-star experience...

Review 89:Outstanding location - equidistant from Basilica and the town centre. The view from the bedroom window was to die for! Staff were extremely attentive.

Review 90:I have to check out at 11:00 AM. =)

Review 91:Front desk staff and bar was available 24 hours. They gave me a big room with a double bed and a view of the valley. Hotel staff are friendly and accommodating. My stay included a free buffet breakfast with a variety of choices. Even if I needed to check-out at 11:00 AM, I could leave my luggage with the front desk and continue exploring Assisi throughout the day. Reservation and payment was easy. There is an elevator! The bathroom is modern, clean, and has plenty of towels. It was suitably located to the places I wanted to go and to the bus stops. Wifi Internet is free and fast! THANK YOU Hotel Fontebella!

Review 92:The staff were extremely helpful and nice. Martin was an excellent source of great information from a local stand-point. Perfect location We rented a car and the drive there from Rome was beautiful

Review 93:drinks in the bar were very expensive

Review 94:Staff very friendly, totally great location including amazing views from the 'fire room' which is the only place you can get wifi which is fine as this is what they promise. Room was 'cozy' with carpet and a nice comfy bed

Review 95:A little cramped for family of 5 with teenagers, but manageable. There is no sofa available if the 5 bed option is chosen.

Review 96:Location near center of upper Assisi is fantastic. Family apartment room was very adequate and the view from the window overlooking the Umbrian valley was sublime. Restaurant was excellent and the complimentary breakfast was very good.

Review 97:The bathrooms were out of date with a very small shower. Our room was very crowded for a group of 5 including luggage.

Review 98:The staff was warm and welcoming. They were always willing to help in any way possible. The breakfast was wonderful spread. The views from the balconies were breathtaking.

Review 99:It was just too run down and out-dated.

Review 100:It's a pilgrimage site, so have no expectations. It's a place to sleep at night. The town of Assisi and the Basilicas are the reason to be there.

Review 101:There was nothing not to like.

Review 102:Staff were more then helpful, always going out of there way to be of service. Hotel restaurant for evening dinner was excellent and reasonably priced.

Review 103:The hotel staff was incredible. They were very friendly, accommodating, helpful. Whatever we asked them to do, they did with a smile on their faces. The dining room food was very good. The views out of the rooms were breathtaking. Also the location in Assisi was most desirable.

Review 104:Wifi was poor. Though Resturant food is high quality, expensive with wine.

Review 105:This hotel was perfect for our needs. There was 2 couples (early 30's) and we were able to save some money at the Fontebella by staying in a family room. It was split level so a small amount of privacy, though we had no issue. The Hotel is certainly in a perfect location to explore the old town and Cathedral. There are some great resturants in this area including Fontebella's own. Very easy to get to and from the Train station. Definitely stay here if affordable!

Review 106:Beautiful hotel and location, including breakfast. The best of all was Martin at the front desk. He was so friendly and kind and helped us work out some problems with the train tickets. He was the best we encountered on our entire trip to Italy.

Review 107:My single room was budget priced, presumably because it was on a lower level and had a lesser view of the valley below Assisi. Nonetheless the aspect was pleasant and the room well appointed. Staff were helpful and spoke good English.

Review 108:Beautiful hotel, in the town of Assisi. Friendly, helpful staff. Hotel restaurant had a good choice on the menu, very tasty and beautifully presented. Breakfast had lots of choices.

Review 109:Very outdated, strange lighting system, a/c wasn't working. This hotel is in need of updating. Very old, stale feeling to it. Restaurant has a fantastic valley view but food was not spectacular. You definitely come for the view, not the food.

Review 110:The location was great and the view overlooking the valley was amazing!

Review 111:No iron in the hotel. Repeat "In the Htel"!! No WI-FI in the room. Slow WI-FI in reception lounge. Not very friendly on front desk. Need Customer Service training.

Review 112:View from from room and restaurant. Excellent breakfast. Friendly restaurant staff

Review 113:Restaurant closed (in a hotel?) Internet inadequate..not in room.Parking is extra. Windows seized shut.

Review 114:Perfectly placed for the churches. Setting is medieval town.Great walking. Adequate breakfast. Rooms a bit small for theprice. Good bathroom.

Review 115:All was good; no complaints.

Review 116:Lovely historic hotel, well-located, clean, spacious and comfortable; friendly, helpful staff. Convenient restaurant in the hotel. Gorgeous views of Assisi and Umbrian countryside. Easy parking compared to other hotels we saw in Assisi.

Review 117:Breakfast should be improved: there should be local delicacies and not industrial food. That's the least for a 4-star hotel. The bathroom, although in a good state, should be refurbished.

Review 118:The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable. The view was beautifully stunning, it really is breathtaking to look at the valley from the hotel room. The location, very close to the center, was perfect.
