Reviews for Grund í Grundarfirdi
Review 1:This is a great location if you want o go whale watching (amazing orca watching via laki tours in the wintertime) or want to explore the peninsula. I would recommend this over saying in Stykkishólmur, that town is cuter, but this guesthouse has a much better location for driving out and exploring during the day. The rooms are clean and well equipped, there are enough shared bathrooms and showers that you don't need to wait, and the kitchen and living room has everything you need. They also provide laundry machines you can use after 6pm which is handy if you've been on the road a while.
Review 2:This place felt extremely authentic and homey, which was enhanced by the fact that I was the only person staying there. Centrally located and secluded at the same time – I love it!
Review 3:Could not fault the location and service. We had 3 nights of northern lights, with some amazing displays. Everything about the property was exceptional.
Review 4:It was relatively quiet when we were there but it could perhaps be a bit crampt in the shared areas if all rooms were full. Having said that not sure if other rooms were singles or doubles and views would easily offset this.
Review 5:We were lucky and got one of the front rooms with amazing view across the bay towards the famous mountain. Very lucky to see the noryhern lights from the window and then the front deck. It has good shared facilities and handy to have condiments and coffee etc if needed.
Review 6:The price was just a little high but again when we compared this place to another place in the short walk that we stayed a night before, cheaper but we did not get this kind of quality and comfort.
Review 7:This is a spacious house with a fantastic kitchen with all necessary facilities and quite in a good location in case that you want to go for a short drive to see the northern lights.
Review 8:Beautiful views of Kirkjufell and Grundarfoss. Although staff is onsite for only a few hours of the day, there are helpful notes everywhere to guide you through the guesthouse. Making ourselves at home was easy! Cozy and warm with ample showers & bathrooms. Really enjoyed getting to know other guests as well.
Review 9:Nothing bad at all!
Review 10:The trusting, no staff on site, atmosphere helped the visitors get to know each other. The place is warm and comfortable with stunning views.
Review 11:Not a bad thing but good for people to know that there are 3 showers available and 4 toilets, so not sure how this would be with a full house - it was fine for as there were only a few other people staying at the same time as us.
Review 12:Good communal areas - kitchen, lounge room, great views, staff don't want you to go hungry in the morning - basic bread, fruit, spreads, coffee machine available.
Review 13:Had a 'half-finished' feel. Furnishing could have been nicer. One large room was totally empty and unused, which was odd. Also got charged an extra 12 euros on top of the original price - never found out why.
Review 14:Location in the middle of town, size of the house.
Review 15:- Very good location, you live in a nature - Near enough to town for food and shopping - Very quite ambient - Sufficient bathroom for everybody - Very friendly staff with very good knowledge around the area.
Review 16:nothing really unsatisfied. Just it will be even better if there is a shower room on the 2nd floor.
Review 17:Great location! Quite with stunning view. Everything is well organised.
Review 18:Grund was a fantastic place to base myself for my time in the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Kirkufjell is visible from some bedrooms and from the kitchen, and Grundarfoss is only a short walk away. As I found out on my first night there, it's also a good place to watch the northern lights. The guesthouse itself was comfortable and clean, and the kitchen had everything you would need for self-catering. The owners of the guesthouse were friendly and particularly helpful when we found ourselves in the midst of a storm with 115km/h winds. He advised us on driving safety and, while it resulted in many of us having to stay inside at the guesthouse much longer than expected, it was great to get a local perspective on the conditions since they took us all by surprise.
Review 19:Nothing
Review 20:The guest house was very clean Causey. The staff was very nice. The room does not include breakfast but the staff makes sure that there is alway tea coffee and "something" to eat like bread, yellow cheese and fruit so the guest would not go hungry.
Review 21:Warm and clean inside. cosy shower room. and very helpful host with smile. You can see Grundarfjordur from this house. If you have a plan to see Snaefellsnes.. here would be a good choice.
Review 22:The price is expensive tinyroom&without breakfast my room always smell something food from kitchen
Review 23:Great view from my window Great place that hotel is
Review 24:- Great location with a gorgeous view - Really well equipped (large kitchen, several washing machine and dryer, 3 showers and 4 toilet, ...etc) - Helpful staff and easy check in - I was surprised to even found a big professional coffee maker! The coffee was fantastic
Review 25:The only time the facilities became a small issue was when a whole family plus several couples were all using the same kitchen / dining room space, but that only happened once in our 3 day stay. Worth booking ahead (we did) as staff aren't always on site (again, no problem for us).
Review 26:Loved the location - a little remote so a car is needed but it is a quick journey to centre. We got trapped in due to a gale one morning and the staff laid on extra coffee, had extra food supplies and gave regular weather / safety updates - got a real sense that they cared for their guests' experience and well-being.
Review 27:There had been a mix-up and the owners who do not live on the site were preparing for one person instead of two. I call them and they came over immediately, redid the room for us to make room for an extra bed and did not charge for the second person because of the confusion. They were very kind.
Review 28:Nothing - it was great.
Review 29:The view from the house and our room was amazing! Offered light breakfast (toast, hot drinks and fruit) even though it was not supposed to be included. Cosy, cute place.
Review 30:Very comfortable and clean establishment in a great position. It had facilities for self catering, which is good because the local dining options were not great. Has great sunset views.
Review 31:We booked for a twin bed room but the landlord made mistake and gave us a single room. We were notified by email on the morning of our arrival day. Landlord said allow us to cancel if we don't accept. I really want to cancel but I couldn't find any other accomodation at this very last minute. So we had to stay in the tiny room where supposed for only one person. The landlor was nice to give us an extra mattress to put on floor. But the room is too tiny, with a bed and a mattress, we almost had any space to even stand!!!
Review 32:Friendly landlord, kitchen well equipped, some food were provided free like ham, cheese, jam, pasta etc.
Review 33:No option to have breakfast (but there Were a few things in the fridge for everyone). Other guests were very loud in the morning
Review 34:We arrived very late, but room was ready and keys were available.
Review 35:Well equipped kitchen for self catering, if desired. Ability to use washing machine which was handy after a few weeks away from home. Basic breakfast provisions provided. Good supermarket in town to stock up if required.
Review 36:Never met the staff.
Review 37:Amazing view out the window! Near the National Park and a lovely walk to a nearby waterfall. No formal breakfast but provided coffee, juice, toast.
Review 38:The shower cubicles were very small.
Review 39:We stayed for 2 nights and found the property very clean and tidy and also nice and warm. Our bedroom was excellently furnished and very spacious - room for all our luggage etc. There were also 3 showers available in the house for the guests to use.
Review 40:Even though facilities (including bathrooms) are sufficient, with full occupancy could become difficult to manage the use of common rooms.
Review 41:The guesthouse is pretty far from the village but placed in a scenic location. It is a real "farm accomodation"
Review 42:We had a beautiful, if short, stay in the hostel, but my friend and I agreed that the warm hospitality, gorgeous setting, and comfortable facilities made this one of the best stays of our vacation. If you plan on hiking to the waterfall on the property wear waterproof shoes!!
Review 43:It was a little noisy
Review 44:The location was great, just outside of town and there was an amazing hike to a nearby waterfall. The view from our room was amazing.
Review 45:Very lovely guesthouse. The hot pot has an amazing view over the area. Our landlady was very friendly and helped us sorting out problems with our car company via her private phone. The rooms are cozy and clean and the sitting area is very comfortable. Also there's a good kitchen!
Review 46:The owner doesn't really speak english so it was a bit complicated to communicate. Our room was the tinniest with one twin bed for 2. However the owner gave us another mattress to put on the floor. With that mattress, there was no more space in the room!
Review 47:For breakfast, there was bread, fruits, juice, milk. Nice terasse to watch the sunset. Very beautiful scenery all around the house.
Review 48:Very impressed with the bathroom to bedroom ratio - I believe 3.5 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms - MUCH better than most. The hostel was located just a few minutes from town, had comfortable good sized rooms, a well appointed kitchen, clothes washer/dryer, and lovely views in every direction. Don't miss the nearby shark museum!
Review 49:Nothing! All fantastic!
Review 50:I loved everything. The owners were so kind and helpful. They made sure we had everything we needed every day, and even shared some secret hiking trails (up the mountain behind the guesthouse - the best hike of our entire trip!) The place itself was convenient, comfortable, wifi worked great, simple food was provided for breakfast and we just enhanced with a few extra items. We used the kitchen to cook dinner, lunch, etc... and often enjoyed the scenery eating outside on the table. Everything here was just simple and worked. Most important, we felt we stayed in a place that the owners really care about - the guest house was well taken care of, as well as us :)
Review 51:Communal kitchen very cramped.
Review 52:Views from the guesthouse were lovely. Nice communal lounge area. Good to have access to a washing machine. Owners put out a few food basics which was a nice touch.
Review 53:Mix up when booking.. they gave us a single so i emailed them immediately and they confirmed they had a double for us... when we arrived it was a single tiny room with a single bed with two pillows and two covers on it...we slept top to tail but i only slept for about 3 hours...
Review 54:View was great...
Review 55:The staff is not permanent, and the lady we met did not speak very good English. Nevertheless, the room allocation system is well done. The wifi did not work from our room.
Review 56:Amazing location, great views, high amount of bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, silent (carpet in the corridors). Possibility to do laundry in the evening. Some ingredients for a basic breakfast are left for guests in the fridge.
Review 57:We had a little bit of trouble finding the place. We didn't know that it was a minute outside of Grundarfjordur. The location wasn't a problem at all though. If you're driving from Reykjavik it's on your left right before you arrive in town.
Review 58:Location was breathtaking. Staff was kind, showers were amazing. Great place! I would recommend it.
Review 59:Clean, easy to find and comfortable. Sharing washrooms/kitchen was not a problem because they were so efficient. A great self help/self chk-in that would only work in a place like Iceland.
Review 60:For people without a car, like us, it's a bit far away from the village if you have to walk that way every day, but it was ok. Also the staff is only there twice a day and you never know when exactly, but their phone numbers are written down if you have a question or problem.
Review 61:Beautiful area with waterfalls, beautiful view of the hill and the sea. Extra plus: the staff provides free food for the guests in the kitchen (coffee, milk, bread, cheese, etc), even though meals are not included, washing and drying is free as well. The owner I met was very nice and helpful, her English was very poor but she gave us a lift with her car when she met us on our way home and called the bus driver for us to ask him to stop directly at the hostel for us.
Review 62:Nice to offer some food, even if it was not supposed to be included. Great to do some laundry there. Well organised! We took a lovely walk to the waterfall. It took an hour and a half to go back and forth. Recommendable!
Review 63:The location is very beautiful. The house is nicely furnished. The common area has books and TV Even though there is no breakfast included, the staff has put some tea, coffee, cereals, fruits, cookies and other stuff for the guests. Enough bathrooms.
Review 64:- Got put in a single room when we booked a double. Extremely good customer service though as we got an email the next day with apologies and partial refund. They didn't need to do that at all and our stay was still very comfortable regardless.
Review 65:- Location (views) - Food spread - Quiet
Review 66:Nothing- loved this place!
Review 67:The location was great on a large property with views to fjord and mountains ( with own waterfall) - the hosts leave food out to share, fruit, milk, bread etc! Able to use the kitchen to cook own meals! Great living areas to mix with other guests! Can use owners washing machine yo do laundry! Very friendly! Good Wi Fi! Views were superb!
Review 68:The home was clean, had new wood floors and appliances, super fast WiFi, a view of mountains, a fjord, a giant waterfall, horses, sheep, minutes from town, but best of all was the staff! They were so incredibly friendly and helpful. Best place we stayed so far. Nothing
Review 69:Nothing!
Review 70:We travelled for 2 weeks in Iceland and this was easily the best guesthouse of our trip. We stayed for 3 nights. It is in an idyllic rural setting. The staff were genuinely enthusiastic and helpful. The owners provide many basics such as bread, milk, coffee, tea etc for the guests to share. It was spotlessly clean. There are 5 double rooms, 4 toilets and 3 showers and also free use of the laundry. Each room is colour coded - we had the purple room which had wonderful views. It is the perfect base from which to explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The guesthouse was full every night so I advise early booking.
Review 71:The views are amazing and the setting unmatchable. The guesthouse was lovely. It was clean and comfortable. I will always remember walking through the to the bathrooms with the beautiful smell of clean laundry filling the air.....loved this place.
Review 72:The location of this hotel is stunning with great views of the Kirkjufell Mountain..we were here on a birdwatching/photography trip so having Harlequin Ducks on the stream right in front was fantastic..the hosts also provide breakfast for the guests even though its not advertised..will definitely stay here again.
Review 73:Everything was great!
Review 74:The owners were super nice, but if they weren't there, they set it up so that you have self-check-in. The view from the front rooms is INCREDIBLE! The kitchen had everything we needed to make dinner. And they even provided some food for everyone (bread, butter, cheese, bananas, coffee, etc.)
Review 75:The kitchen is a bit smallif more than one person wants to cook at a time.
Review 76:The place is in great location with a direct view on Kirkufell and the Fjord. The house is new and friendly furnished has several bathrooms a livingroom and a kitchen for cooking. Breakfast is not included but the owners provide some fruit, coffee and bread for free! Nice!
Review 77:nothing really
Review 78:The easygoing atmosphere with staff and guests. Kitchen facilities are good and there is an espresso-coffee-machine. It's well situated, sea-view, a bit outside of town(which has a supermarket). The peninsular is spectacular.
Review 79:everything was so well organised in this little sweet place. Fresh fruit, bread everything was available, best wifi of the island and the location was awesome with the view on the waterfall and close to the sweet town, with a nice coffeeshop, museum, touristinfo! BOOK THIS!!
Review 80:Small rooms, shared bathrooms. no tv.
Review 81:Great Friendly staff, great location, clean rooms and bathrooms, some toast, cookies and bananas are available for free for breakfast or snacks.. Perfectly ok, not large or fancy.
Review 82:Despite the fact that the breakfast was not included in the accommodation, some food was provided by the owner for his guests which was a very nice gesture.
Review 83:not bad, just know that the owners don't live here. when you get there, you go in and your key is inside in the hallway. they seem to come by in the evening to make sure the guests know where breakfast, showers, etc are.
Review 84:nice shared areas, great price. kitchen had everything needed to self cater, and plenty of shared fridge space. everything was new - it just opened in 2014. they also let us use their laundry for free! plenty of showers and toilets. they also fulfilled our request to have our room ready early.
Review 85:The staff, rooms, and overall grounds were very clean and better than what we expected being in such a remote area. Everyone was super helpful and it's near a town so you can buy booze, food, etc. Great kitchen to cook your own meals and they also have general food items for the group.
Review 86:Nothing. If you plan on using the living room extensively, it might be a bit small for everyone to fit in. But kitchen is big too.
Review 87:Nice home, very clean and organized for travelers. We didn't see the owners, but everything was done so we didn't get lost and felt very welcome (small notes in the kitchen). There was some key food supply in the kitchen to have some breakfast and make sandwiches. 3 bathrooms are available for 6 rooms, so very good (look for the bathrooms at the back! We almost missed them!)
Review 88:Everything was excellent. I would recommend it.
Review 89:We booked a double room with shared bathroom and they did upgrade us to a very nice big house at the same price. It was incredible, the house had several bedrooms, spacious living room and kitchen with all mod cons, garage. Breathtaken scenary in front of the sea, we really liked it... Kind and friendly owners, he must be a rally champion driver, congratulations.
Review 90:Cute setup for arrivals when the staff is not there, keys and instructions waiting by the door. Nice big room and great living area and shared kitchen. Plenty of bathrooms and showers, as well as laundry machines! I liked staying here, good location for exploring the peninsula and national park.
Review 91:You can see Kirkjufell mountain from the house. The house is lovely and the owner is very nice. Don't worry about shared bathroom, it's clean. Kitchen is good.
Review 92:We loved the immediate area and the National Park. Fantastic backdrop. Great base. The guesthouse has a comfortable TV room and kitchen. Great WiFi. Ample parking. All cosy and comfortable. Basics provided for a light breakfast but nearby supermarket in town if you want more supplies.
Review 93:Fairly thin walls - if you are a light sleeper you may want to bring ear plugs.
Review 94:Four bathrooms in house, three with showers. Good water pressure and temperature in all showers. Shared on-site laundry and full kitchen, plus shared family room with couch, TV, and table. A few minutes outside of town. Friendly horses on site :) Great Wi-Fi signal throughout the house.
Review 95:When you come in and the owners aren't there, you can find your roomkey in the hallway. It was a little awkward in the beginning to settle down without anyone knowing you're in. But on the other hand, I think it's a nice gesture of trust.
Review 96:This might not be the ultra-modern-all-you-want-high-end-guesthouse. It's much more. The owners are very friendly, they even warned us in the morning to stay a little bit longer due to bad roadconditions. The guesthouse is cosy, the kitchen fully equipped (even with fresh fruit, good coffee and breakfast for free). Shared facilities aren't a problem, there are plenty and some of them brand new. And with a fantastic view of Kirkjufell out of your window, we would definitely come back!
Review 97:A little confusing to find.
Review 98:There was a problem with our room, so we were upgraded to a whole house on our own on the other side of town. It was excellent!
Review 99:the house is located in a scenic surrounding. If you like to have sea and mountain views it's the right place for you. The owners were very friendly and helpful.
Review 100:The host was very friendly and they really made us feel at home! Although it's indicated that there's no breakfast option but the host stock up their kitchen and fridge with bread, cheese, milk, biscuits etc, and we're free to eat them. It's so nice of them! The house was like a home, very clean and the bed and blanket were very comfortable as well! The owner was also very helpful and friendly. Our car was stuck on the icy road and the host Pall taught my hubby the technique to drive on slippery road and this skill was really useful for the rest of our trip!! Even after we left the guesthouse, Pall still called us to check if we're travelling ok in iceland. We are glad to meet him and wanna thank grund guesthouse for this great stay!!
Review 101:The room may be a bit too bare, consisting only of beds and lamps.
Review 102:The house is very clean and cozy, well-maintained, and the facilities provided are very comprehensive. Apart from the kitchen utensils and cutlery, they even provided free cooking pastes, eggs, hams, milk and many more (even a coffee machine!) The host was very welcoming, and made sure that everything was working perfectly well. This easily scores a 10/10.
Review 103:We liked it all!!!
Review 104:Great location, just a stone throw outside Grunndarfjordur and perfect to enjoy the countryside! Very clean, comfortable spaces, specially the kitchen (with all you need to cook a good meal). The staff was very friendly!
Review 105:The house was full during our stay and during dinner the other guests were very loud, so we decided to stay in our bedroom. But after 10pm they followed the rules and stayed quiet for the rest of the night.
Review 106:Location was very nice and our bedroom was very clean with a huge windows to the beautiful landscape. I could even see the northern lights from my room. We didn't meet the owners but it wasn't a problem at all, our bedroom was prepared when we arrived and they leave all the indications for you in the entrance of the house.
Review 107:No toiletries (think that's the norm for most of Iceland though).
Review 108:House was very comfortable, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer. Shower was hot with great water pressure. Bed was extremely comfortable with memory foam toppers! Best of all, we saw the Northern Lights here in mid-Oct, right outside the house.
Review 109:Massive potholes in the gravel driveway to the guest house should be filled in. No staff, even during the times they were supposed to be there. Would have been nice to have verbal recommendations for dining. Carpet throughout was a bit dated, and also only saw one half bathroom and one full bathroom? Interior of the guesthouse had limited "charm" or character. I'd stay here again only if again a quick in and out of the area with zero expectation of any local feel.
Review 110:Our room was really clean. The location was great (next to a small town, right on the water, in a farm with views of the mountains and all the farm animals). If darkness and quiet is what you want this place is great for that. The shared facilities were clean although we didn't use the kitchen.
Review 111:The owner called us to inform that he will take us to another house, which was really nice with all the comodities. The location is beautiful and the owners are very nice. We spent finally 2 nights (in principle we only wanted to stay one), as we found it very comfy.
Review 112:The hosts fill the fridge with simple food to ensure that we do not go hungry. The place is absolutely lovely and the view out the windows are fantastic. We came here in bad weather but got to see plenty of rainbows just outside our windows. Fantastic
Review 113:There was nothing to disappoint.
Review 114:The facility is located in the countryside but quite close to town for meals and supplies. Though a served breakfast was not supplied the 'fridge was well stocked for a self-serve breakfast.
Review 115:For some reason, we couldn't find this place in our GPS and we went right past the guesthouse. However, after asking around, it was easy to find. Well marked with flags outside.
Review 116:We were the only couple in the house - enjoyed getting to know the other French couple. The home was very comfortable. While they didn't serve breakfast or dinner, they had several items in the fridge for guest use. Games and movies to watch. Overlooks a beautiful waterfall and quick drive to Rue Ben -- town's restaurant.
Review 117:The walls are a bit thin, if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs....oh, and there are no curtains on windows, so sleep mask may be needed.
Review 118:Loved the freedom/Independence of this guesthouse. Owners have full confidence that guests will behave like responsible adults, First night I stayed, it was a full house, all was great. Second night even better because fewer guests. The Grund is fabulous. I was very happy there.
Review 119:The flexibility of the property management (Pall). He arranged an entire house for us. The solitude of the place was unique - gives the feeling of contentment and closeness to nature.
