Reviews for Hotel La Badia di Orvieto

Review 1:The reception was not what we were hoping for, he almost seemed annoyed with us showing up. Then explained that we should not have used booking.com to book our rooms for night.

Review 2:Beautiful facility

Review 3:Just a few things: First, in almost any old stone building like this there seems to be a lot of mildew, so if your sensitive to that, beware. It was more noticeable in the public areas than in the guest rooms. Second, and this is maybe a bit unfair, but our experience has been that when a hotel is only about 1/3 full, they’ll give you a somewhat nicer room than the category you booked, without you even asking. Here, we actually asked, and were just quoted the full rate for any upgrade. Again, we have no right to it, but it would’ve been a nice goodwill gesture. Third and finally, the location. The hotel is in a pretty countryside setting, but finding it is not so easy (be certain to print and bring the little map they have posted on their website) and getting in to central Orvieto is a bit of haul, by car and then elevator and foot.

Review 4:The building is beautiful, it was kind of neat to stay in an old monastery, the rooms were decent sized and reasonably laid out, the internet in the rooms was fast and easy and reliable (but not in the lobby or dining area), and the restaurant was pretty great (small portions, clearly intended for multi-course dining, so potentially a bit pricey but I wouldn’t say over-priced).

Review 5:We were in room #40. The bathroom window does not close fully. We had 12 stink bugs(Beatles) in our bathroom with more coming in. I had to try to seal the window with a towel. You are not able to walk to anything. Very isolated.

Review 6:Beautiful historic building. The common spaces have been renovated.

Review 7:TV reception & wi-fi not good in room but that was minor.

Review 8:La Badia di Orvieto is like living in your own castle. The room was excellent with a beautiful view and a "Romeo & Juliet" window. The 'Hall" was very comfortable for reading, drinking wine, watching TV, and relaxing. The grounds are gorgeous. It's a perfect location; near he Autostrata and right outside Orvieto. Great espresso! Loved it!

Review 9:15 Euros each way into Orvieto. Meant a eating in the restaurant more often than we would have liked.

Review 10:Loved this as a retreat, a place to get away and recuperate after 5 weeks on the road. The very rainy day in the middle was just what we needed. The fascinating architecture meant we didn't need to stray from the grounds.

Review 11:the setting in the hills with orvieto hill top in sight. The peaceful hotel, the service in the restaurant and staff on site. Easy 10 min taxi from the train station and the clean and spacious rooms. We also loved the outdoor courtyard for an early evening and late night glass of vino!!

Review 12:hotel is very tired, needs some TLC

Review 13:beautiful old monastery, food in the restaurant was very good, staff at reception & restaurant staff very attentive and helpful.

Review 14:The bathroom is small with a very small shower. The service at the restaurant was slow and not to the level of a 4 start hotel. The food at dinner was average.

Review 15:The ancient structure is well preserved and is a pleasure to walk around the property. We had a split level suite and it was spacious and comfortable. The location is convenient to visit various sites around Orvieto and is a short drive from the city. Copious and good breakfast buffet.

Review 16:I realize that the restaurant is run independently of the hotel, however, while the food was excellent, and the service was even excellent at the beginning of the meal, once the main course was served, we never saw another staff member again. We sat for 20 minutes after our meal, waiting for a dessert menu and coffee, and nobody ever came by....we finally just left. It's a shame because the food was very good.

Review 17:The overall tranquility of the property; the history.

Review 18:Swimming pool area felt a bit neglected - very pretty site but no staff around and no chance to get refreshments . Evening meal menu a bit limited especially for a vegetarian.

Review 19:Beautiful location and buildings and near to Orvieto. Very quiet and comfortable rooms. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast very good.

Review 20:Understaffed, communication problems.

Review 21:Beautiful location and hotel. It was very remote from Orvieto so if your looking for quiet and relaxation it was great.

Review 22:Wasn't clear that it was not in the city. Not good value for money. Expensive restaurant and the main dish was unimaginative, dried up and minimal. The receptionist was helpful eventually but both her and the porter appeared passive/aggressive which was unpleasant.

Review 23:The old site is wonderful, especially the atmosphere in the very simple church. And the frescoes.

Review 24:Our room (35) overlooked the (quite pretty)car park which was very noisy starting at 6 am with trash collections. One window in our room had etched glass but no curtain, so the room was too light too early. The hallway outside our room was uncarpeted, so it was extremely noisy in the morning with guests and maids banging doors and dragging luggage and trolleys up and down the tile floor.

Review 25:All the staff are wonderful. Laura in the restaurant is especially delightful and professional. Dinner and lunch were excellent, if a bit pricey. Very good wine list, focused on local wines, but not exclusive. Beautiful swimming pool in gorgeous setting. Very romantic, atmospheric.

Review 26:Limited italian breakfast (cakes) and room (upgraded to suite) was rather bare. Bathroom was tiny for the size of room

Review 27:Old monastery building and very quiet overlooking the city of Orvieto, which is a must to visit. Short cab ride so not need to take car as very few parking spots in the city. Dine at I Sette Console.

Review 28:The staff was very friendly. The dinner was excellent and the service was great. The location and property was beautiful and rustic with a great view of the Duomo.

Review 29:Exercise machines round pool becoming derelict Cigarette butts allowed to be scattered in the gravel outside the dining room and not cleaned up

Review 30:Charming staff; very characterful hotel; excellent food

Review 31:Zero complaints

Review 32:I felt like I was walking in a museum. Orvieto is a wonderful place to visit and this hotel felt we were living the experience. The dinner was superb and the breakfast wonderful. We truly loved it.

Review 33:The grounds are not well taken care of. The decking in the pool area in dire need of a refinish, and generally, because the property is surrounded by mature evergreens, it is no doubt a challenge to keep the detritus from the trees off of everything. Room while clean, smelled a little musty until it was aired out.

Review 34:Liked the location. The view of Orvieto is excellent. Quiet.

Review 35:A complimentary shuttle service would be great from the city of Orvieto.

Review 36:La Badia di Orvieto is a great place if you are looking for a relaxing stay, this is a place that you can do a little self - reflect...

Review 37:The original room we had booked was hot and stuffy, and it is hotel policy to NOT turn the Aircon on until late May/June. For us Brits it was uncomfortable but the staff were sympathetic and were able to move us to a cooler room, which was lovely and better suited our needs. I commend the staff in the swift response and fully recommend a stay here.

Review 38:Location, location, location! The setting is beautiful and a short drive to Orvieto. Easy access to the A1 (Motorway). Breakfast was good, room spacious and nicely presented. The staff spoke very good English and were friendly and helpful, a credit to the owners of this hotel.

Review 39:It is just a dream to be able to stay in an 11th century Abbey. The personnel is lovely. Molto simpatici. We had delicious meals at the restaurant. I definetly reccommend it!

Review 40:We had a room with a handheld shower-head in a tub, not very convenient.

Review 41:Spectacular, unique property; our room was small but adequate; breakfast was good; the grounds were outstanding; picture perfect; friendly, helpful staff; we did not want to stay in the city so this worked well.

Review 42:The pool was closed/under construction. It was advertised as having a pool. The food at the restaurant was terrible!! :(

Review 43:The property was very nice/unique. The room however was pretty average-fit for a monk! Bed was comfortable.

Review 44:nothing

Review 45:spectacular setting, buildings and grounds excellent restaurant convenient to town of Orvietto Large comfortable rooms and beds Great breakfast buffet

Review 46:Abbey not walking distance to town.should have rented a car.But no real problem.Taxis cheap.

Review 47:Everything.excellent restaurant.friendly and helpful staff. Made us feel special. Walled city of Orvieto very close.

Review 48:the beds were so hard almost like sleeping on a board the room was very very small as was the bathroom

Review 49:very pretty setting easy to park very nice breakfast buffet nice restaurant

Review 50:The only negative. Had dinner there that was very good, but the truffle pasta had canned truffles that tasted like disks of rubber. A shame since it was truffle season and had the same dish in town that contained real fresh truffles for lunch. I would skip dinner at the hotel.

Review 51:Beautiful and interesting buildings and grounds. Excellent service and very charming environment. Very romantic and quiet. Short drive to the city center of Orvieto

Review 52:A bit pricey. Very few people staying when we were there so staffing levels reduced to the minimum.

Review 53:An amazing place, beautifully restored. Excellent facilities and staff. Superb food at the restaurant and breakfast. Located near enough to Orvieto to walk - if you don't mind hills!

Review 54:Can't think of a thing!

Review 55:Country location, fine food, great staff, lovely facilities! This place was a real find, and we highly valued our stay here instead of in the town. We hope to return. The English-Italian was no problem, and they were so helpful with guidance.

Review 56:Nil

Review 57:Magnificent atmosphere. Cozy functional large room in cold winter. Superb restaurant at reasonable price. Interactive friendly and helpful staff

Review 58:Beautiful location full of history and charm

Review 59:Nothing

Review 60:Fantastic location and facility. Very friendly staff and breakfast was very good. The beds were comfortable and rooms clean.

Review 61:Evrything was top level

Review 62:Terrific location and great ambience.

Review 63:Would like softer (down) pillows.

Review 64:Heavenly setting, superb service, excellent food!

Review 65:The rooms could use some updating Bed very uncomfortable

Review 66:The property is amazing

Review 67:Dreanlike setting, friendly staff, quiet location

Review 68:Over stressed and over worked staff Especially at dinner with one poor girl running far too many tables.

Review 69:Amazing location beautiful scenery

Review 70:Beautiful medieval monastery

Review 71:Great location, great history all around

Review 72:Incredible find - absolutely beautiful location

Review 73:Average kitchen and service.

Review 74:Beautiful environment and scenery.

Review 75:Fantastic

Review 76:Peace and quiet. Lots of really hot water in rooms.

Review 77:Cost a bit high

Review 78:Beauty of the hotel.

Review 79:Beautiful large monastery conversion with modern facility in a classical setting.

Review 80:Dinner, although pleasantly served, was very disappointing.

Review 81:The opportunity to stay in such a historical and interesting building.

Review 82:Loved everything about this hotel. Unique property, amazing views, fantastic restaurant.

Review 83:Small room, sparingly furnished

Review 84:Condition, locale, beautiful facility

Review 85:- location & surroundings - friendliness of the staff - architecture and views

Review 86:Uncomfortable beds and location is too far away to walk to Orvieto. Next time we will stay in town.

Review 87:The beautiful facility

Review 88:We were here for a wedding and it was an excellent venue. Beautiful.

Review 89:The light shone in the window all night long. I like it dark for sleep.

Review 90:The whole package. Quaint, romantic, historic.

Review 91:Location was a bit out of town so a little bit of difficulty without a car.

Review 92:Absolutely beautiful and staff were very attentive.

Review 93:The restaurant did not live up to its hype. It's a bit pricey but that's ok if the food is worth it. Maybe it was an off night but no one at our table was overly impressed. My pasta was even clumped together - not what I expect at a "gourmet" restaurant. We would definitely stay here again but would eat dinner elsewhere.

Review 94:We all loved the location, the hotel, the staff and the service. Both rooms were large and comfortable and the food and service at the bar was top notch.

Review 95:Something inexplicable made my hair stand on edge when we were walking to our room next to the ruined church at night. I think these things are unavoidable and add to the charm of the place though.

Review 96:Breakfast spread was surprisingly lavish - our BEST in Italy really (and we thought a farmstay breakfast would be better) - only breakfast where we got eggs and so many kinds of fruit and tarts and pies and choices of beverage. And the heating was wonderful! We loved our steamed up bathroom because we got a lot of our laundry dried by morning. Location wise this place is unmatched (if you drive) - just at the foothill of Orvieto. It was SPECTACULAR driving here from Civita di Bagnoreggio on the SP12 and seeing the Badia tower peeping through the trees like a fairytale. The concierge and restaurant staff were warm and friendly, but the place is run like a business and lacks a little personality. I would suggest giving a little tour to your guests because that would make the whole place come alive!

Review 97:Our room, a standard double, was very dark, as is the interior as a whole. But then it was a Monastry, so only to be expected. The Restaurant was bad value for money.

Review 98:The building was fascinating, and perfectly positioned close to Orvieto.

Review 99:It was October...and the hotel closes Oct 31...few guests at the hotel...never the less the hotel needs to provide adequate staffing...which they didn't...no turn down service first night...needed to call GM...some staff members not friendly..

Review 100:the setting...you were in Castle...the history

Review 101:No negatives come to mind. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. A great experience.

Review 102:A great location for Orvieto; just close enough to easily visit. This hotel is 12th century bones and the restaurant is excellent. We loved the spot; wonderful place to unwind for a couple of days after the chaos and thundering hordes of Florence.

Review 103:Nothing!

Review 104:Lovely setting outside of Orvieto with easy drive to city parking.Excellent staff, very welcoming. Loved dinner in the restaurant. Greatvalue for the $

Review 105:The pool and the limited and pricey menu in the restaurant.

Review 106:The property itself.

Review 107:Heritage accommodation and the location.

Review 108:excellent

Review 109:The place is amazing.

Review 110:Bad Internet connectivity. Restaurant was excessive and deterred in house dining.

Review 111:Location. Ambience. Pool. The room.

Review 112:Restaurant closed.

Review 113:Setting rooms building.
