Reviews for Hotel Picchio

Review 1:The duvet is too thin, and the room is a little bit dim.

Review 2:The location is so convenient to transfer to every places: ) The staff is so nice and help us a lot!!! The heater is warm: )

Review 3:Could have done with another blanket as the blanket thin and I don't like sleeping with heater on.

Review 4:Hostess very friendly and cheerful. Location great to get to station and funicular up to Old Town. The baked breakfast 'goodies' that I tasted were delicious as was the cappuccino!

Review 5:Even one news channel in English would have been good.

Review 6:Warm welcome. Wonderful continental breakfast with 6 different homemade cakes as well! Nice room, very comfortable bed. Good location at the bottom of the hill, within 5 mins walk of the railway station & to the funicular to Orvieto old town. Great value.

Review 7:The place is located in a little hill, so ppl who travel with big luggage need to notice about that. No elevator but the staff was nice enough to help us bring down the luggage next morning so there wasn't a lot problem for us.

Review 8:The old lady who waited us for late check-in is really cute and friendly. Good location which is really close to orvieto station. The breakfast was good and the staffs are helpful.

Review 9:Location of Hotel Picchio is excellent. It is only a few hundred metres from the train station, bus stop and Funicular which made it extremely easy to visit old town Orvieto.

Review 10:We planned to stay two nights but our request for late checkin was refused (sent via booking) so we had to choose different hotel for the first night.

Review 11:Very good breakfast with many homemade sweets (eggs, prosciutto and cheese also available). Free parking on the street. Ideal location to explore beautiful Orvieto - funicular 5 min by foot.

Review 12:I was initially surprised to be in the new area of town but it was convenient given i was traveling with a suitcase.

Review 13:The breakfast was great, with a mix of cheeses and meats as well as delicious homemade cakes. The location was okay; outside of the town walls (at the bottom of the hill) but close to the train station and funiculare. Rooms were very comfortable and the whole operation seemed very professional.

Review 14:The only downside was our shower - it was awkward to use. the angle of the shower head made it hard not to get water outside of the tub. It was hot and clean though so we managed.

Review 15:The staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable - we even had our own little balcony! The breakfast was amazing - homemade cakes and tortes were incredible. Who doesn't love dessert for breakfast!

Review 16:I was placed in the separate building, which was no problem. However, communication with the reception would have been difficult without a cellular phone.

Review 17:Very convenient for the cable car to Historical centre. Very close to the station. Very good breakfast. It was very comfortable, and quiet.

Review 18:Wifi not working in annex building and owners simply denied it or said it was getting heavy use. We checked with two other couples in our. building who had the same problem and same denial by staff.

Review 19:Room was ready even though we were a little early. Very comfortable accommodation. Breakfast was great and we were able to store our luggage while we went up to the old town. Great location for train access and car rental (Hertz).

Review 20:The hotel was quite pleasant and the staff helpful. The hotel is located in the lower town, quite near the train station and the funicular. That makes getting to the hotel and then to the upper town quite easy. The only drawback in that the funicular stops running at 8:30 p.m., after which there are only a few buses that run back to the train station. That makes it a bit tricky to have dinner in the upper town.

Review 21:Very well located hotel, easy access of the historical center by a funicular which is very close to the hotel. The newly built annex of the hotel is extremey comfortable and the interior design is worht to mention. The staff is remarkably nice and helpful.

Review 22:As typical with most Italian hotels, air conditioning is turned off during the shoulder season. It would have been nice to have a fan. But this is something US tourists should just accept as standard.

Review 23:Location is perfect. Outside of town, near the train station. Underground parking available which is great. A short ride to the line to take people into town. Not being in town might be attractive, but parking is a problem as is fear of accidentally driving into a restricted area and receiving a 100 eu ticket. Friendly owner and breakfast servers.

Review 24:Great location near the station. Lovely staff who are very helpful and attentive. The host prepares beautiful home cooked pastries and cakes. Breakfast is excellent. The funicular to go up to the old town is very close by.

Review 25:Secure parking for my bike, decent bar area and good wi-fi. Conveniently located for visiting the old walled town. Theres a couple of places to eat cheaply locally as well

Review 26:Hospitality and warm welcome of the owner, Giovanna. Breakfast was generous and has great variety. Wifi worked well. Included homemade cakes and pastries.

Review 27:Wonderful hospitality. Giovanna gracefully put up with our booking mistake and was extremely welcoming throughout. Really convenient: a steep hike straight up to the old city, OR a very short walk to the Funicular tram.

Review 28:There was no way to leave the old town after the last funicular left. Bus services were poor, to put it mildly. Taxi services were non existing. 1 out of 4 taxis answered the mobile. This taxi was not in town, but eventually organised for a friend to pick up everyone who was waiting for the bus at the funicular station. Would recommend to bring your own car, if you have one. Or ensure to catch the last funicular.

Review 29:Leaving.

Review 30:Simply brilliant. Have stayed in hotels, backpackers, B&B's and more in over a dozen countries now. Never before have I found such wonderful caring service in such a warm atmopshere. Great location - barely a 2 block walk to the train station, funicular to take you up to the old town and also the hire company drop off points. Beautiful and well apointed room with the comfiest bed we have found after 8 differnt stays in Italy so far. We had a great few nights sleep after too many rock hard beds. Enjoy the delicious breakfast, homemade cakes, cheese, hams, bread, croissants and a great coffee. To cap off our stay, after waiting for the torrential down pour to break before walking to the station the wonderful owner insisted on driving us there.

Review 31:Location is nice for train station, just next to it but from Orvieto center after 8.30 pm cable car service is closing. Bus is till 11 pm and very rare.

Review 32:Very comfortable and clean. Different kind of homemade cakes at breakfast was great.

Review 33:They let me drop off my bag and checked me in quickly while I had a taxi cab waiting for me. The accomodations were very comfortable. If only I could have stayed a second night.

Review 34:This was a perfect start to our Italian adventure. Close proximity to the train station and finicular, friendly, helpful staff. We loved the petunia covered balconies. Grazie,Giovanna and Alessandra

Review 35:We had a lovely stay with our friends, renting four rooms. The hostess/owner was fantastic and treated us like family. Rooms were clean and well cared for. The neighborhood was quiet and friendly. I would highly recommend this place.

Review 36:Can I think of anything

Review 37:Very helpful and friendly staff. Simple, no hassle, no password, wi-fi. Spacious room with balcony. Breakfast with many home made cakes and very good coffee. Hotel carpark. Convenient location for people who are driving and do not want to going to the town centre, and near funicular for people who do you want to go into the town centre. The staff were helpful and solved our problem when we had left our passports at the previous hotel.

Review 38:quiet hotel even if so close to the city. There is a cable-car that brings you on the level of the old city. The hostess is very kind and humourfull. There is a private garage you can use for 5 euro a day. From the hotel you can also walk up the roman way to the citywalls and Porta of Orvieto, a tiring but wonderfull experience you should undergo if possible.

Review 39:Modest but personal family owned hotel about 15 minutes walk from the historical center. Very quiet, so we had a good sleep. Good value for a short visit.

Review 40:Hotel Picchio was excellent due to its location within walking distance (with luggage) of the railway station. It was close to the rail line, but quiet as well. The rooms were clean, large and bathroom was clean and spacious. Having a balcony meant that we could relax with a bottle of wine, and local cheeses and fruit and enjoy the end of our day. The lady who seemed to run the hotel with her younger family spent the night cooking all the delicious cakes and sweets that we enjoyed for breakfast, and a barista made coffee made the start to the day perfect. We had no problems with the Hotel Picchio, loved it.

Review 41:The hotel was absolutely beautiful. Each room has its own balcony and it completely new and remodeled. The breakfast in the morning was outstanding, with a huge (and I mean huge) assortment of pastries, muesli, eggs, and juices. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We will definitely stay here again. The hotel is also located on the road that leads directly to the old city up on the hill. We walked there each day for our exercise. If you prefer, the incline (located at the train station) is a 2-minute walk from the hotel which will take you to the top.

Review 42:Just a short uphill walk from the Railway Station and Funicular

Review 43:Three night stay in lovely room with balcony. Friendly Family Hotel. Home-made cake specialties for breakfast as well as cold cuts, cheeses and eggs.

Review 44:The breakfast was great with an excellent selection of homemade cakes. The room was well equipped and clean with excellent wifi. It was great to have a secure garage to store our bicycles.

Review 45:Rooms were great..we stayed in the new section and it was fabulous. Paid 5 euro for the parking, which was in the same building. Totally worth it..garage and secure. The family place we had was exquisite. Had the ability to cook own meals, but no pots or pans. Not an issue for one night, but I am sure they have loaner sets. Call and verify before you go. Kids slept in the parlor and mom and dad had our own room. PERFECT, PERFECT! Great bed and wonderful accommodations. Only regret was that it was raining and could not use the wonderful patio. Breakfast was amazing...wonderful cakes by Giovanna, the matriarch of the hotel, are worth staying there alone. Also had typical Italian meats and cheeses, but the cakes are beyond incredible. Seriously, if you can handle a sweet breakfast then there is no better place. Simply fantasdtic!

Review 46:Shower nozzle at a very odd angle so difficult to wash hair.

Review 47:Short walk from railway and short walk to funicular to the old town. Good size room .friendly staff. Good breakfast.

Review 48:We had to climb up 3 flight of stairs with our very heavy luggage. Wifi slightly spotty.

Review 49:While the room was rather simple and Spartan (not really hotel per se), the owner's warmth and friendliness more than make up for the stay. Location - few hundred meters from train station and funicular to Orvieto. Breakfast - awesome homemade breakfast complemented by the friendly owners attending to you Parking garage available. Thank you for the great stay, we'll email you the photo we took!

Review 50:Very convenient location near funicular to the old city, garage to leave your car and to avoid searching for the parking at the top, welcoming and friendly staff.

Review 51:The staff are nice and helpful. The room is very comfortable. The location is good which is close to train station. We love the handmade cakes in the breakfast!

Review 52:It's a 10 out of 10 for hotel Picchio. Giovanna and her husband are English speaking. Together with their team, they provide impeccable service, very friendly and made us feel very at home. We are certainly impressed by the family-size room & facilities; they match or exceed that of a good class boutique hotel standard. Breakfast is included and we were 'stunned' by the beautiful & sumptuous spread of breakfast buffet. My husband and I with our 18 and 16 year old children are so taken in by this beautiful place and wish we could stay a little longer. Thank you Giovanna and team. (I will email you our photo separately.)

Review 53:The handbrake of my car couldn't manage to fight with the hill the hotel is situated on =)

Review 54:A very nice hotel to spend some time at. Nice view, clean & tidy, friendly staff, brilliant breakfast. Plus a parking place (5 euro a night).

Review 55:Got to love the walk up to the hotel in the end...

Review 56:What a nice family hotel made me feel like part of the family, every one was very helpful...Thank you

Review 57:Though it is up a bit of a hill, it is the closest hotel to the train station and the pavement for wheeling a suitcase is smooth--not cobbled. Breakfast was amazing and when we asked where to find a laundromat, our hostess called a friend who came and, for an ok charge, washed, dried, folded and returned our clothes. When we had an early departing train, our hostess fixed breakfast early for us. I'd like to go there again

Review 58:I like everythng in this hotel: its situation near the railway station, a comfortable room, delicious and various breakfast. And, of course, benevolent stuff!

Review 59:There were few facilities around the hotel. Only one nice restaurant and few stores for basics. Also you had to watch the timing of your departure from Orvieto in order to obtain a ride back down the hillside to the hotel. Just two bus dept. times after the fenicular closes at 8.30 pm. With late eating catching the 9.15 pm or 11.15 pm bus could be a challenge. We stayed in late Oct so there were not too many tourists and it worked out ok.

Review 60:We upgraded as we were staying 6 nights in order to explore the surrounding countryside as well as Orvieto. We had a spacious comfortable room in a separate building with access to a terrace. The Manageress was most hospitable and helpful. The cake selection for bkfst was astounding!

Review 61:Do not see anything

Review 62:Very good location, good value for money. Family run small hotel. Very good home made cakes for breakfast made by the lady of the house. Clean, modern and comfortable.

Review 63:All good

Review 64:We had a car which was easily a d securely parked. Funicular was three minutes away. Internet was easiest and most reliable we have had Italy. Breakfast good and pillows wonderful

Review 65:Everything was great..The breakfast was a real treat..great service and friendly atmosphere. Would definitely tell my friends to stay here ..We really enjoyed our time in Orvieto. Thanks again from 3 Canadian ladies!

Review 66:The staff are super nice! They upgraded my room to the largest one with balcony and modern shower. The breakfast is excellent with many cakes. It takes only 3 min walks from the train station to the hotel. One of my best hotel in Italy trip!

Review 67:Wasn't there nearly long enough.

Review 68:Great location just below the old town of Orvieto with easy access to the funicular. Fantastic breakfast if you like sweet pastry's (which I do).

Review 69:The unit had a kitchenette but it had absolutely nothing in it - not even a glass or a wine opener!

Review 70:The bed really was comfortable, and the pillows were nice as well. Not like many we encountered in Italy! The hotel is easy to find from the A1 Autostrada and a short walk to the funicular. Also, the breakfast buffet was superb, with home-made goodies from the owner. I would go back just for that!

Review 71:need to walk a slope to arrive the hotel and the room is not at the same building near the reception

Review 72:i need to have early breakfast to catch up the train in the morning and the reception tried her best to prepare the breakfast as early as she could, so considerate.

Review 73:Breakfast room was not open at 0600 when I like to eat; however none of my stays in Italy had breakfast before 0700

Review 74:This was one of the lowest priced singles, but for my e45 I got a double and single beds, full jacuzzi tub with rain shower. Absolutely no sound except distant morning train came in the room. Large breakfast with lots of choices. Drawback for some is that it is at the bottom near train station, but I had only a 10 minute steep walk of 800 meters to reach the top where old city is. Path is right up from the hotel. Most of you won't do this; you will take e1 funicular nearby

Review 75:Had to carry luggage up stairs to 3rd floor but staff helped us so not much of a problem

Review 76:The "crazy" (her own words)lady owner Giovanna says, while you sleep, I work, making her lovely cakes. The rooms were big with balconies offering magnificent views of the hilltop Orvieto on one side and the Umbrian landscape on the other. Very nice family-run hotel in a very quiet town of Italy. Perfect location for train travellers

Review 77:The lighting in the room.

Review 78:The young man who was at the reception was very likable.. as well as the lady in the evening! I wish I could have spoken more with her and practise my italian! I thank her for the breakfast cakes, so delicious! The room was very cosy and clean with a beautiful bathroom. I slept very well because it was so quiet.

Review 79:It was brilliant!

Review 80:The apartment was designed with love and care.......it was delicious. The little balcony with flowers growing made us sit out and drink wine.....when we should have been sleeping! Love Joanna and her family or staff!

Review 81:Nothing

Review 82:An English speaking lady provided information while checking us in at 1PM. She escorted us to the garage, up to our room, then provided keys for the 2 night stay. This well managed family hotel complex provides spotless, modern, and quiet rooms at a reasonable price. The full breakfast was complimented by an array of delicious homemade baked goods. Its superbly located along the path leading steeply up to the old town, 1 block from the excellent Nando patisserie/ice cream, and 2 blocks from the train station's acendsori. The father kindly came to our room to locate CNN!

Review 83:Inconsistent wifi.

Review 84:We were welcomed warmly by the owner/hostess. She was always friendly and took time to answer any questions about Orvieto and area. We looked forward to breakfast every day, traditional meats, cheeses and eggs as well as the hostess' freshly baked cakes filled with fruit. Our room had a balcony with a view. Wonderful value.

Review 85:No negatives, enjoyed my stay here.

Review 86:The location is good, an easy walk from the Train station (5 minute walk at maximum) and also from the funicular which takes you up to the main town. Lovely breakfast with home made cakes and nice coffee. Owner was very friendly and rooms clean and comfortable. Great bathroom.

Review 87:Hotel Name not recognized by TomTom GPS. Don't take staff's advice to walk up to Orvieto Duomo. They say it's 800 meters but that's altitude, not longitude. Take the tram instead.

Review 88:Large rooms for three adults. Kitchenette. Homemade sweets for breakfast. Reasonable price. Good location for Orvieto Duomo.

Review 89:The staff were great, and went out of their way to ensure that we had a safe place to store our bicycles. The room was spacious and very comfortable, with a balcony, and the view from our room was great. Good location near the train station for walking up to the old walled city.

Review 90:A lovely genuine Italian experience, including providing a delicious range of home-made cakes and tarts for breakfast. Looking after our suitcases while we made one last visit to the old town. Genuine care and interest in how we enjoyed the stay. The balcony was perfect to enjoy some wine and cheese on in the evening.

Review 91:No elevator.

Review 92:Friendly staff and a good and spacious room. Superb WiFi. Good breakfast. Parking in their own garage is an option. Close tot the cable car for visiting the old city.

Review 93:WI FI was limited

Review 94:The facility was in a quiet location with easy access to the sky rail to the old village. The staff were fantastic and I would recommend this as a stay for any body that wants a relaxing few days.

Review 95:I was a little disappointed that my family was split up into two different rooms. I had booked one room for four people, but ended up having to divide us into two groups. Not a big deal, though. And this is not a con necessarily, but folks driving here, especially nervous ones not used, need to be aware of the hotel's location. It is on a very steep hill with side street parking, although there is a garage just around the corner down a narrow lane available for 5 euro. People from San Francisco will feel right at home, but others driving manual transmissions might cringe a bit.

Review 96:The location was pretty good for a "down the hill" hotel, and the breakfast was surprisingly ample given the limited space to have it. As others have reported, there are a variety of cakes and pastries, as well as some meats, hard boiled eggs, some cereal and yogurt. Perfect to start the day. Staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Review 97:We stayed three nights in early July in Room 112, ½ flight up from the street. Mrs. Picchio has 3 or 4 buildings on this side street. The room was very nice and modern looking. The room and bathroom were a good size and clean. There was little traffic on what appeared to be a dead-end street, so the room was quiet. Breakfast was very good, with 12 cakes home-baked by Mrs. Picchio. You may notice that we obviously talked with her a bit (good English) and she was helpful. In addition to the cakes, there was Italian bread and croissants (I think). She had hard-boiled eggs, cheese, yogurt and juice. She also had a basket of fruit. We would stay again. The location was convenient to the train station, a five-minute walk and easy to find. The funiculare is at the train station and takes you up to Orvieto. There is also a bus that runs all day and after the funiculare quits at 8:30 pm. The bus up to Orvieto is not as convenient. The location is also convenient for getting to Civita di Bagnoregio since that bus leaves from this same transportation hub.

Review 98:you need to be aware that you need to go up to Orvieto from the hotel. this is okay as long as you don't want to stay there until late in the night.

Review 99:friendly owner. nice breakfast with home-made cakes. close to railway. wifi was available. nice and spacious terrace.

Review 100:Fabulous hotel in perfect location overlooking local house and garden. Lovely rooms with balcony...quiet and very comfortable and clean. Heaps of hot water, breakfast was amazing. 2 minute walk to funicular up to old town. Wonderfully friendly staff. Could not fault.

Review 101:English speaking (not a standard in Italy :-)). You can have non-sweet version of breakfast, delicious homemade cakes. Large room with all the things for your pleasant stay. Friendly and helpful hosts.

Review 102:Everything was great. Warm welcome, great sellection of cakes for breakfast, the owner made us feel great. And to have a car in garage while 30° C outside is realy worthy.

Review 103:nothing, I liked this hotel

Review 104:Quiet friendly hotel in a good location, just a few minutes from the funicular up to the old town. The rooms have balconies with flowers and you feel that you are staying in a neighbourhood. It's very convenient if you have a car as you can park safely outside the hotel or in their garage (small fee). The breakfast was excellent.

Review 105:No elevator, but innkeeper had someone help us with the bags

Review 106:Personal service, secure garage, wonderful breakfast

Review 107:Difficult to find while driving

Review 108:Very clean room comfortable bed good access to Orvieto centre through funicular

Review 109:Friendly staff

Review 110:The breakfast was excellent Traditional home made pies

Review 111:All good!

Review 112:Great brekky. Close to station and lift-thingy that goes to top of hill to old city. Large room with balcony.

Review 113:Location, close to train station, easy access to tram up to Orvieto. Close to car rental office. Worked out great for our short stay

Review 114:Great Location for visiting Orvieto and very near the Fenicular, friendly staff. Homemade Cakes for breakfast excellent!!!!
