Reviews for Hotel Monterosso Alto

Review 1:10 minutes from Monterosso the town but is like being at a family home. Great staff especially Rusty Mendoza.Public bus every 1/2 hour picks you up right in front hotel. Breakfast is great! Would I stay again, YES!!!!

Review 2:One of the beds was old and you sunk in a bit. Still comfortable though.

Review 3:Its a beautiful property, wonderful rooms that where clean and cute. Extremely nice staff, breakfast was wonderful with each cup of coffee made for every guest.

Review 4:Loved the location and the staff could not have been more helpful with the boat, train and bus schedules for the Cinque Terre..breakfast was great and dinner delightful..

Review 5:Location is a distance from town and you have to rely on the hotel shuttle to get bak and forth. Rooms were small for three people.

Review 6:Location. Ideal for hiking.Proprietors were delightful and made every effort to make sure we were comfortable.

Review 7:Jonathon and his staff were very accomodating in every aspect of our stay. We had a lovely meal in their restaurant and it is nice to be away from the main town.

Review 8:The owners and staff member Rusty were beautiful and so welcoming and accommodating to my family. The breakfast and coffee was awesome to start our day off and the shuttle service was a lifesaver and really made our holiday in Monterosso wonderful. All the recommendations for restaurants in Cinque Terre that they gave us were absolutely delicious. Perfect holiday.

Review 9:Bathroom too small, toilet placed too tight to shower Mattress very old and one is laying on a slope in the double bed

Review 10:Morning staff very friendly Shuttle service discontinued in October but bus stopped just outside hotel

Review 11:The room was to small. The bathroom Was across the hall(unsatisfactory). The place needs renovating.

Review 12:The staff were great.Than you Jonathon,Delia and Julia.

Review 13:Our hosts were so accommodating, providing help even with a car problem! The atmosphere was homey, the food was well prepared and presented, and we loved being out of the hurry of the town.

Review 14:Wonderful little hotel. The location is very peaceful and their shuttle service into town works great. The managers, Jonathan and Delya, were wonderful, and very helpful in helping us track down our delayed luggage. Breakfast was good, but especially the smell of the freshly baked croissants every morning. We ate dinner there twice, and enjoyed the meals very much.

Review 15:Hotel is very 5km from the town so very far. There was bugs in the breakfast. Room is comfy, but the bathroom is very small.

Review 16:Staff was very friendly. the shuttle from town to the hotel runs very smoothly.

Review 17:There was nothing I didn't like about the hotel. Breakfast was amazing. Staff was kind. The free shuttle was always on time since we never had to worry about paying for a taxi. It was a very pleasent stay.

Review 18:I loved how cute and family oriented the hotel was.

Review 19:Really bad location for us. This hotel is about 3 miles (5k) out of Riomaggiore and is only accessible by bus or taxi. This wouldn't be a big problem, but the bus stops running at 8 pm and a taxi is 25 euro. This hotel would be great if we had a car, but we cut our reservation short because we needed a more accessible location.

Review 20:Clean hotel, really friendly staff

Review 21:The wifi didn't reach our room and the bed was not very comfortable.

Review 22:The location was nice, and the staff were very friendly and helpful with everything. The shuttle service was very helpful as well.

Review 23:The hotel was like a bit of s retreat from the business of the centre of Monterosso. Can be difficult to get back up there if you stay out past midnight. Shuttle service may not always run on time. Bathrooms were a bit small.

Review 24:Breakfast was good, it was a small, clean and cute hotel with friendly staff.

Review 25:My sister and I stayed for three nights and loved every minute of ourstay. The family that owns this property is the sweetest and nicestfamily that we met in Italy. Definitely make sure that you strike upconversation with the staff.LOCATION: This hotel is off the beaten path and is NOT by the sea. It is on the mountainside. However, the owners have specific times that they will drive you down to the center of town. If you miss those times, then you can take the small bus that runs every couple of minutes. We had no problem getting to the places that we needed to get to when we wanted. It's a beach town! Everyone is really laid back. Atmosphere: The hotel is clean. We loved the patio outside and one night chose to drink some wine on the patio and just play cards. The Atmosphere here is much better than being in the beach area. Staying at this hotel allows you to feel like your up the mountain while at the beach. It is also very close the hiking trail access. FOOD: Breakfast ruled. The best croissants in Italy since they were warm every morning. Cereal, fruit, juices, hard boiled eggs, etc. is available. DINNER is amazing here. Definitely the best meal we had in Cinque Terre. We got the pesto pasta and the sea bass dish. So so yummy.

Review 26:This hotel is way up in the mountains so not ideal for a single woman since accessibility to town was limited and not walking distance. Hotel would be great if you liked walking the trails. But as the temperate was hovering around 38C , hiking was not possible. This hotel does not have AC and probably if it was not as hot would have been fine. They did give me a fan which worked so my sleep was fine. Just getting ready though in the heat was tough.

Review 27:The owners were fantastic and very accommodating. They recommended a great restaurant in town which they made a reservation at for me. It was fabulous. The car service they have to take you to the town is great and very prompt. They were there to pick me up when I arrived.

Review 28:Location is remote, a 1hr walk from Monterosso uphill. Had to plan our day around the shuttle times, which put a crimp on our tight schedule. Room was small, had to ask for a fan which was very loud. Best for those wanting to avoid the tourist crowd.

Review 29:Very good breakfast, helpful and courteous staff. They do their best to overcome the remote location: a 5 times per day scheduled shuttle service (free) and shuttle on demand (for a fee).

Review 30:No air conditioning. Only thing.

Review 31:Staff were excellent. Jonathon and Delia, the owners, were great. Very accommodating, great attitudes. We got there one day early, our fault, and Jonathan drove in and found us rooms nearby. That's service. We had dinner there one evening and it was excellent as well. Rooms were very clean. A great experience. Nice place to start hikes from as well. There restaurant selections were great. Tortuga one night, Mikys one night.

Review 32:Nice place for sure, but the shower was very difficult to use it was so small. I kept wondering how anyone over my height (5'6') could possible fit their legs between the john and the shower door when sitting to use it. The location was not the best in that we had no personal transport and had to depend on the hotel shuttle service or get taxis to go the four km from the "happening" area near the ocean, back an d forth to the hotel. Hotel offered free shuttle, which is great, but had fixed schedule that didn't always sync with our plans and didn't run late. Just not as convenient as being minutes away to hotel by foot. The breakfast was very minimal, though included, it compared in no way to the offerings in the other five hotels in which we stayed in Italy on our vacation.

Review 33:The owners were very nice and accommodating.

Review 34:WiFi was quite slow

Review 35:Staff was great, very kind and helpful. Free shuttle from Monterosso took us there and back. Nothing much around the hotel, but for one night only it was OK. We had dinner in the garden and the food was very good, tough there were not any other guests that night.

Review 36:The room was super small, we couldn't fit our suitcases in so we left it in the car and only brought in what we needed for the night, we also neglected to inquire when making the reseversation about air condition, which the property does not had

Review 37:The owners will shuttle you into town and pick you back up, very nice couple.

Review 38:The rooms were very small and warm with no air. Thank goodness they had fans we could use. The hotel does not have a view at all.

Review 39:They had a shuttle to take us to town everyday.

Review 40:It was a little far away from the main part of town, however a free shuttle ran quite regularly so this wasn't an issue. Wifi only worked in the reception.

Review 41:The place was nice and super cosy so we felt right at home. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were sad to leave.

Review 42:Best staff of our trip. Thank you to Delia, Joseph and Rusty. You were so warm and friendly...so accommodating to our needs and helped us to enjoy another night when there wasn't a room to be found. Grazie!!! Pat and Dana from USA.

Review 43:Unless you have a car it's quite a distance to the village at the base of the mountain.

Review 44:The breakfast was lovely with a good selection of food and juices buffet style.

Review 45:The rooms were not airconditoned. A fan would have helped.

Review 46:The staff was very friendly and extremely polite and helpful. Nothing was too much for them and they always went above and beyond to make our stay pleasant.

Review 47:Would have liked breakfast to have started earlier have a strong need for coffee

Review 48:The location for some peace and quiet, we holidayed at the busiest time of year was nice for some "non tourist time" and the staff were very good

Review 49:Nothing bad to report. Exterior bathroom was a new experience for us but ok. A bit far from town but complimentary shuttle helped alot.

Review 50:Hotel was very clean with friendly helpful staff. Breakfast was enjoyable.

Review 51:We picked this place because it was a little ways away from the main area, in hopes to get some peace and quiet, especially from traveling all day. That is exactly what we got. It is about a 20 minute drive from the main train station. Make sure to call ahead to let them know when you will arrive, as they have selected times that the shuttle arrives, otherwise it is a flat 13 euros to get a non planned time. The room was small, but that's to be expected. The bathroom was a separate room, but was private with key. Breakfast was served, and the pancakes were really good! Very homey atmosphere, and a great place to stay.

Review 52:No air conditioning (did provide fans) . Maybe installing ceiling fans could provide some circulation, especially to 2nd floor rooms. The wi-fi only worked in the lobby.

Review 53:Although the location was a bit far up, the owners did a wonderful job providing shuttle service back and forth. They were VERY accommodating and helped us in booking a train to Milan. It is very quaint and quiet.

Review 54:Shower a bit small and awkward in our room

Review 55:The proprietors of the hotel were extremely welcoming and helpful. The location was quiet and had beautiful mountain breezes on days that the 'town' dwellers were sweltering!

Review 56:Bathrooms very small as in most European accommidations

Review 57:Excellent management couple! Was helpful in every way. Convenient shuttle to and from Montetosso until 23:00

Review 58:We had to rely on the hosts to bring us back and forth to Monterossa and some times there were too many people to fit in the car so we needed to wait. No air conditioning. Bathroom was small. Your knees were in the shower door when you were on the toilet, and the shower was too small to wash your hair. Bed was also not very comfortable. No elevator. Be prepared to carry bags. This was more like a B and B than hotel.

Review 59:Proprietors were young and wanted to please.

Review 60:Retrofitted shower cubicle made the bathroom cramped, rude shuttle taxi driver, who barely slowed down to check for passengers, parks willy-nilly in the square where the service starts and ends. Not the best of views from the window. Location a bit far from main attractions.

Review 61:Very helpful staff with maps, timetables and recommendations. Clean room and very good breakfast.

Review 62:Very far out. Access only with shuttle or paid taxi. No elevator and No Air conditioning. There were flying bugs all over the place and so hot in room it was hard to sleep. You can also hear all the other guests if they come home late.

Review 63:Staff very helpful

Review 64:It was a little noisy at night, but ear plugs solved the issue for us.

Review 65:We had a great time. The hotel is at the top of town, parking at the hotel was a must. There was a big parking lot close to town (have cash). Breakfast was lovely as were the staff. Thank you Monterosso Alto!

Review 66:It's quite far from town. They have a free shuttle in peak season but doesn't run very regularly - there is a good 3 hour gap between shuttles in the afternoon, needs to go every hour on the hour.

Review 67:There were a few little issues. The free Wifi was only in the lobby and common area, not in the rooms. Our room (a four-person room) was on the 2nd floor (what would be the 3rd in the states) and the beds and bathtub were under the slanted roof. It took a couple of hits before we were careful to duck before getting into bed -- ouch. The tub was impossible to stand in because of the roof, and had no shower curtain anyway, so a bath was the only option, which was a bit challenging since the tub was not full-length. And although the place looked scrupulously clean, there were some tiny little ants in one of the rooms.

Review 68:The hotel was well-located, in the hills above Monterosso al Mare with a free shuttle down to the town. The shuttle was convenient -- the times clear and well-timed, with friendly, on-time pick-up. We called the hotel when driving out and got clear directions from a helpful English-speaking desk clerk. When we checked in, we found the place to be charming and didn't mind the stairs since we're used to European hotels not always having elevators. The breakfast was great -- delicious and well-stocked.

Review 69:The beds were average as they were through all of Italy and the dinner was good, but not great for the money.

Review 70:We loved that this hotel was a short trip away from the city which is quieter (10 minute shuttle). The customer service is the best we had in Italy. When you walk in, you immediately feel a sense of peace and relation which is perfect after visiting one of the busier cities like Rome or Florence.

Review 71:It's really far from the train station. We got there past 5pm and that means there's no way to get up there other than trying to get a cab or take a 30 minute hike up (alongside the road). If you get there earlier, there are supposedly buses that go up there.

Review 72:The staff is super friendly and the food downstairs is great -- I had the seafood pasta (after a long day) and it was the best thing ever. It's right next to one of the trails so it's a great place to start your hike.

Review 73:Only complaint is that there was no wifi in the rooms. This was restricted to one area of the hotel (the reception) .

Review 74:A little away from the villages but Idyllic. Perfect if you have a car as it is a very long walk down. The staff were very friendly, kind and willing to help.

Review 75:Everything was horrible and you'll be taken advantage of by the cab driver and hotel owner to go anywhere. Just expect to pay more in taxi fares than the hotel and be really upset about the entirety of the hotel stay.

Review 76:Absolutely nothing

Review 77:The electricity in our room went out for a couple of minutes the first 3 days of our stay. The heater wasnt working at all for at least 2 days, but they did provide us a space heater though. There was no breakfast provided after in the booking hotel description said they served a breakfast buffet every morning (we ordered breakfast every morning thinking it was included in the booking fair and it turn out we had to pay 137€ extra) the hotel lady told me they dont serve the breakfast buffet in the winter from january until march so have that in mind. My advice, ask as many questions as possible before booking a hotel. Also, the location was'nt what I was expecting, good thing we brouhgt our own vehicle.

Review 78:The place was very clean. The pastries where delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpfull.

Review 79:The hotel is actually outside of monterosso. So you have to drive to the town. The wifi only works in the lobby.

Review 80:Very friendly and helpful staff; really went out of their way to accommodate us.

Review 81:There is no lift - our host assisted us with our luggage and while we would have been able to manage on our own, it would be difficult for older people, people with disabilities or young children. Our pillows were lovely and soft but it would have been good to have another alternative. We were left at the premises on our own ovenight (and we were the only guests) however emergency contact details were provided.

Review 82:Our hosts were very friendly and helpful with local information (maps, advice etc). The breakfast was very generous and delicious. The location was delightful and close enough to the Cinque Terre villages (the road down to Monterosso is challenging but we came to Italy for different experiences). The room was cosy for a family of four but that is to be expected and honestly, we were not uncomfortable.

Review 83:We stayed at this hotel on November 27,2014.When we got to the hotel no one was there and they left the key to our room outside of the door for us. We were the only ones at this hotel so when we found tons of bugs in our room there was no one to tell so we could switch rooms. We then found a room that was unlocked that we moved into. The TV did not work in the room and an alarm kept going Off. It finally went off when we figured out how to shut it off. In the morning when we told her what had happen she was not remorseful at all. Seemed like she did not care that there was bugs in our room. We left a day earlier then we were supposed to since it was such a horrible stay. And they wouldn't give us our money back and made us pay 10 euro more for the nicer room we stayed in. Plus there was no wifi in our room only in the restraunt.and the free shuttle they said on their website down to the city only runs during the summer not when we were there. all in all it was a horrible experience and a waste of money

Review 84:Breakfast

Review 85:In low season, in absence of public transport, we had to drive the four km down into Monterosso - narrow winding road ...

Review 86:Easy to find Comfortable and complete facilities Excellent chef Nice breakfast

Review 87:My room was small (but I didn't care much), although it was a double room.

Review 88:Staff was very nice, breakfast was nice too. The shuttle that takes you to/from the beach makes up for the a bit remote location and saves you from the pain of the parking in the area as it includes free parking. Some people will find the remote location from the beach as a good thing, some won't, depending on what you are looking for.

Review 89:Room was facing the road so it was a little hard to sleep, small bathroom, but perfectly adequate.

Review 90:Great value, super friendly staff, great breakfast. SHuttle was very convenient.

Review 91:poor position to Monterorosso rooms lacked proper bathrooms more of a hostel than a hotel overpriced

Review 92:clean room friendly staff helpful to requests

Review 93:Nothing.

Review 94:4 km from Monterosso but nice to be out the village nad the regularshuttle makes it easy to go to dans from the village. The nice andfriendly couple that are the host are charming and the food isdelicious! On of our best pasta meal on our 21 days trip! The room was anica size, the bathroom was large and we slept like babies with ourwindows open and , nice attention, musquito nets nets down. Trip thehome made egg pasta with sea food! A must! At breakfast, evetything ishome made and great. Thank you for a great 2 nights. Ng Montreal, Canada

Review 95:Out room appeared to have to blanket on the bed just a sheet and we were not given any towels... Perhaps they forgot when cleaning it. Didnt like the bathroom a bit small im not sure how a big italian would fit in it

Review 96:Staff very helpful and friendly. The free shuttle down to monterosso was great saves driving down and paying for parking. Location was nice being up the hill.

Review 97:Hotel only accessible by twisting mountain roads. Access to the main center of town is a hair-raising 10-minute drive down the mountain. Breakfast was supposed to begin at 8, but was never ready by then, and was only so-so. Ants in the bathroom, and impossible to shower without soaking the entire room.

Review 98:Shuttle to/from town is a nice gesture for those who don't dare drive. Morning staff remembered our hot beverage preferences and brought them without asking. Service was friendly.

Review 99:Not a great location if you want to enjoy the beaches of the Cinque Terre. Two of the three nights we were awoken by late-arriving guests who were unable to enter. This resulted in an hour of banging on the door, shouting, and finally loudly stumbling in an up the stairs. Not a good system.

Review 100:The hotel is 4 km outside of Montorosso in the hills. There is a shuttle from the town center; a scary 15 minute ride on a very narrow, switch-backed road. The concierge/owner was very personable and helpful. The breakfast buffet is lovely with house-made cakes and local cheeses, salami. Delia is the delightful morning hostess and serves coffees. The restaurant served a wonderful dinner meal of fresh seafood.

Review 101:Friendly staff and nicely decorated room albeit a little tight for space. Although the hotel is some 4km from the town of Monterosso al Mare there is a very efficient free taxi shuttle service between both and you avoid the nightmare of having to drive into and park in the crowded town yourself. Breakfasts were excellent although the coffee came from an upmarket drinks dispenser rather than in the traditional manner.

Review 102:well if you are afraid of heights then traveling up the hairpin turns can be scary but after a few glasses of wine you won't even notice!

Review 103:the staff was great. the food was great. it was quiet and out of the way.

Review 104:Distance from town was too far. Room was tiny Bed was tiny No air conditioning, and room was hot. We changed to another Hotel, the next night to get some sleep. The keys and locks were all hard to use. Could take 10-20 mins to open the bathroom door and front door at night.

Review 105:Staff were nice

Review 106:the hotel is located on top of the hill and it's impossible to walk the distance by foot, so you depend on hotel shuttle timetable.during the day shuttle doesn't run every hour,so you'd have to get a taxi (20-25 euro) if you need to go to hotel urgently. same if you need to come or leave hotel outside 9am-12pm shuttle timetable-taxi will charge you 25 euro. the room was very small and the "view" mentioned on the booking was just a small hill with few trees...no sea view. shower door was leaking,so water was all over the bathroom and it wasn't cleaned by staff for some reason there is a restaurant in the hotel, but food was terrible and overpriced, wouldn't recommend to eat there no lift no aircon no wifi in the room

Review 107:very helpful and friendly staff great breakfast good for family trip free shuttle 9am-12pm

Review 108:The room was very very small, we had to keep our suitcase in the car as they didn't fit in the room...!! Our double bed was tiny and the two of us literally couldn't fit it in... So I had to sleep on the sofa in the communal area... No air conditioning, so the room was very hot and uncomfortable.. I would not recommend this hotel.

Review 109:It did have a peaceful setting...

Review 110:Limited hours for dinner Stressed waitress wanting to get away quickly. People being turned away unreasonably early for dinner, obviously disappointed.

Review 111:Private parking near Cinque Terre Welcome Excellent food Relaxed atmosphere ( generally!)

Review 112:Our room was on the top floor, so it got pretty warm during the day. A ceiling fan would really improve the circulation.

Review 113:Large clean room had enough space for the four of us and our two small dogs, and the professional, friendly, and gracious owners and staff truly made my family feel welcome. We really enjoyed the fresh fruit and delicious pastries and bread each morning, and also had a great dinner in the restaurant after a long day of hiking around the five nearby towns. The shuttle service was a convenient way for getting into town, alleviating the challenges of trying to find parking in a very crowded area, and really giving all of us the chance to relax.

Review 114:Ver warm in the night, no fan/ventilation.

Review 115:We stayed one night at Monterosso Alto, Except from the location, 4km up on a hill from the city center and the train station, there is nothing to complain about in this hotel. Please ask the hotel for the free bus shuttle times, then there is no problem getting to and from the hotel!

Review 116:The room was very cold, and the shower was very uncomfortable. Hot water was on and off

Review 117:Nice location

Review 118:Nothing was bad

Review 119:It met our needs because we had a car and there was plenty of parking. We loved the location , the staff and the rooms

Review 120:Nothing

Review 121:Welcome and service were great, food was rustic and plentiful, room was small but adequate and clean (bathroom door needs planing!).

Review 122:The shower was tiny

Review 123:The property was away from the crowds

Review 124:The food was fabulous. The owners and staff where very pleasant and helpful. The shuttle service was beyond our expectations.

Review 125:Friendly, comfortable place with parking! Staff was very nice and helpful, great breakfast!

Review 126:Rooms need aircon or fan as it gets very hot.

Review 127:Staff we lovely and very helpful. Shuffle bus was very handy

Review 128:Cosy & quaint with great quiet location. Easy access to town & great staff!

Review 129:Could of benefitted from air con or a fan as a minimum in the room.

Review 130:Lovely breakfast, friendly staff, good restaurant and reasonably priced menu.

Review 131:The owners were fabulous! A very well-run hotel, highly recommend to anyone.

Review 132:Rooms, wifi, bathroom, the people

Review 133:Not much, breakfast is ok

Review 134:the basic room had a poor mattress, far too soft.

Review 135:room was clean but very basic Appreciated the free shuttle to town
