Reviews for Grand Hotel Excelsior
Review 1:Some bacground noise in the room woke us up at 5am. Air conditioning or other electrical, I think. Fruit on breakfast would have been nicer than sweete.
Review 2:Nice view. Also old building with old furniture is worth looking at.
Review 3:The restaurant is awful. Don't eat there if you don't have to.
Review 4:This hotel is straight out of a 1970's Bond movie... That beingsaid, it's a little outdated, but we didn't really mind it.Bathroom was a good size in comparison to many European bathrooms andthe shuttle to town was great.
Review 5:No kettle or tea/coffee facilities in room. Tea and coffee was only available for purchase at bar or with meals. Lighting in room was a little poor. Noise from adjoining bathrooms could be heard.
Review 6:Location, views, dining options, complimentary shuttle bus, friendly and exceptional staff.
Review 7:The food choices for dinner. The assembly line service over the time for dinner.
Review 8:The views from the hotel are fabulous. There was food bus service from the hotel to the centre of Amalfi.
Review 9:Wonderful views over Amalfi, the best! Friendly staff, good location. Easy shuttle bus to town. A good base for the area - Pompeii etc. Charmingly 70's, you expect James Bond to pop up anytime soon.
Review 10:We extended our stay and first night our bed was horrible. Changed rooms next day to more comfortable accommodations.
Review 11:The view from our balcony was incredible! We were fortunate to have perfect weather.
Review 12:The restaurant dinner menu had limited options for children, there was no hot food on the room service menu, we were not permitted to order in from any of the nearby restaurants to eat in our room. The shower in our room was very small and there was no shower curtain for the bath.
Review 13:The staff were very helpful in providing sightseeing and dining recommendations. The view from the hotel is spectacular. The swimming pool was well positioned and a good size.
Review 14:No bad experiences. The WIFI doesn't reach the upper floors. Beds, as in most of Italy are firm.
Review 15:Beautiful place higher up, above Amalfi. Spectacular views of the coast from the balcony. Loved listening to the sounds through the open balcony doors as morning breaks. Great pool and grounds including the private beach. Breakfast was a daily delight as the fresh fruit, veggies and baked goods work best for me. Take a walk in the evening up the hill into Pogerola a small local village.
Review 16:Breakfast wasn't good, also the service at breakfast. The hotel wasn't renovated recently, and should be more clean
Review 17:Beautiful view from our room, quiet and nice location. Great beach and swimming pool
Review 18:The sun beds need replacing. The headrests are not strong and they are of the old fashioned synthetic material which sticks to you! So not the best comfort. Also a gym facility would make a major difference as we had our 18 year old son with us and he really loves working out daily.
Review 19:The view is absolutely breathtaking! The staff are cheerful especially Antonio. Being up on the cliff top gave a sense of being away from it all but also you could be in Amalfi in 15 minutes on the courtesy bus. The private beach required you to take 2 lifts down which made it seem very inaccessible it was lovely not too crowded.
Review 20:The staff made this place. Also the view, the shuttle service, the free hotel beach with list access - we can't wait to come again, and when next in Amalfi, would not hesitate to come to this hotel.
Review 21:This hotel is extremely old and dated. The WiFi is nearly non existent and the food was average.
Review 22:The private beach was excellent and by far the best part of those hotel. The free shuttle bus was very handy and the views great.
Review 23:One of the staff members was pretty rude. They tried to locate us in the attachment building which is very inconvenient to commute to unless we declared that we want to check out immoderately and they provided with the room we supposed to get. The excuse was "we have very old old relationship guests which want to occupy your room and we should relocate you" . Breakfast is just to survive from hunger. Their private beach has no sand but only gravel which is very painful to walk on, same in the water. The most painful beach in our experience.
Review 24:Sea view from the cliff where Excelsior is located is spectacular
Review 25:Hotel restaurant was sub par. The quality of food was not as good as advertised. With so many good restaurants in the area, there is no reason to eat there other than convenience.
Review 26:Excellent location. Beautiful view. Spacious room. Friendly staff. the pool is great and the private beach was outstanding!
Review 27:wifi was terrible. Shuttle times restricted us at night and cab back to hotel was easy to secure but seemingly expensive (30 euros). No iron in rooms.
Review 28:I booked the hotel because it boasted a pool and a private beach that you take an elevator to. Reviewers also noted that the location was within walking distance shops in the village of Amalfi. All of this is true....kind of. I was surprised that when we were dropped off at the hotel, it was not the close to the ocean or shops that I had imagined. Instead, the Excelsior sits high on the mountaintop in a remote location and really you need to shuttle down to the beach and the village. 30 minute walk down steps which was ok...going down...for a fit person. Once my surprise wore off, I decided we ended up in the best spot. I am used to luxury hotels but did not expect that here. Doesn't offer Ritz or Raffles feel, but Excelsior offers breathtaking views of the sea, the village of Amalfi and a countryside dotted with terraced lemon groves and beautiful homes. You can sit poolside, at the outdoor cafe or on the huge balcony in your room and enjoy tranquility and magnificant views. Friendly staff, clean rooms, decent food. Private beach with chairs, umbrella, cafe well worth the shuttle ride. Traveled with teen daughter. Mostly couples. No small children. Felt safe. Took bus to Positano and boat to Capri. Preferred charm of Amalfi. Dine at Eolo in town.
Review 29:Everything was perfect
Review 30:Though from a distance, the hotel looks like an architectural disaster, when you step in to the ocean view rooms, it is awesome. A lot of intricate tile work plus the care taken by the staff and management makes the place lively and unique. There's a free shuttle service which is pretty punctual from the city centre to the hotel
Review 31:Wi-fi was a real problem. The network available in the room was imposible to connect. Another network was better functioning in the main floor and I could use time to time. Break fast was not bad but could be slightly improved. Also the room cleaning.
Review 32:The location is a dream and the view is unforgettable. Far from noisy port in an enchanting area is everything you wish you could for the holliday time. The facilities are very well organized and you get everything you need: at the hotel level is a pool and restaurant and also a private beach at sea level at the highest standards. The transport to the private beach, town of Amalfi and back to the Hotel is rigorously organized and efficient with the hotel shuttle bus. The staff is at the highest step of professional class and a note in addition to the restaurant manager, Antonio. Just ask and you will receive the support for everything posible. Everything is very well thought out for a successful holiday stay.
Review 33:The cave bar you see in the pics isn't actually open. The bar up above the dining room closes at midnight, so there's no real nightlife on the property. There is a shuttle and a city bus to take you down to town (Amalfi) but it doesn't run very late.
Review 34:Amazing staff and service, wonderful breakfast each morning with a delightful host that works hard to remember your name and talk with you daily, beautiful seaside views, nostalgic hotel that transports you back to the 1950's. A fantastic place to relax and unwind. Highly recommended!
Review 35:A minor thing that bothered us was the shower hot water supply and the bathroom that needs upgrading. Also the hotel being where it is, forces you to 'come home early' in the evening.
Review 36:99.% everything was perfect especially the staff notably Antonio of the restaurant for his excellent welcoming
Review 37:The shuttle bus needs to either not let people on till it is time to go or the engine needs to be started earlier. It is extremely uncomfortable to be sitting on an airless bus for 15 minutes waiting for the driver. (If you don't get on you may miss out on a seat). Spectacular views from the hotel but the hotel needs an upgrade, very old decor though very clean.
Review 38:Spectacular views from our sea view room. It was great there is a shuttle bus that take you to the private beach and to the city
Review 39:The view was spectacular. Every room looks out over the sea. The hotel has great services like the shuttle to the beach or down town Amalfi! What a great place to stay. They staff was always friendly and helpful.
Review 40:The wifi leaves a lot to be desired. Very sporadic and always drops off and must be rejoined constantly. Very frustrating
Review 41:The view is breathtaking. The restaurant staff were very very nice and friendly. Always got a warm greeting and goodbye.
Review 42:Wi-Fi was very poor/non existent.
Review 43:The spectacular location, with sea views. A nice but dated room with a deck. In house restaurant was good, breakfast was a full spread.
Review 44:Unfortunately the Grotto bar and beach were not open until the day after we left, even though it was almost 30 degrees on every day of our stay at the end of May.
Review 45:Staff were wonderful and the grand old style of the hotel is wonderful.
Review 46:However we feel that a trip across to the bar every time you wanted a Coffee/Tea or a alcoholic drink was a pain. We do feel that a Kettle in the room for Coffee/Tea etc would be very useful. Also maintenance of the shower heads and toilet roll holders wouldn't go amiss.
Review 47:The two rooms were very useful and having two WC's was very good and a lovely Balcony to look out onto was excellent.
Review 48:With the hotel being so high above the town of Amalfi, the time it takes to get down to the town and back up can leave its guests feeling a little isolated, particularly in the evenings when the frequency of the shuttle bus service is less. Also, there does seem to be a bit of 'attitude' about guests bringing food or drink into their rooms which, given its distance from Amalfi, seems a little unfair.
Review 49:The views from every corner of the hotel, our balcony overlooking the sea, the cleanliness of the rooms and facilities, and the attitudes of the waiters, who seemed to genuinely enjoy their work.
Review 50:The only downside was the bed - really hard so would recommend a new mattress
Review 51:Loved the view, the location, the hotel itself feels like you are transported back to a 70's James Bond film. Breakfast and dinner both really good and the staff were very welcoming and accommodating.
Review 52:The bed was a little hard, but not unbearable. Wifi was slow in the rooms.
Review 53:The staff was friendly and helpful. Room was large and comfortable with an amazing balcony. The hotel is on the cliff above Amalfi and had the most gorgeous views. Breakfast was good. Dinner was wonderful but very pricey. The free shuttle into town was a great bonus.
Review 54:WiFi hopeless and staff of no help with this. Dirty bannisters, chipped china, lots of ants on balcony, shuttle bus broke down. Very expensive drinks. Poor value for price.
Review 55:Breakfast was good. View is fantastic. Antonio the maitre'd.
Review 56:-Huge breakfast spread eaten on balcony with view. -Buses come and go daily into town. -Free parking is a rarity -Large bedroom to spread out in -Large bathroom -Pogerola is an awesome quiet village just a half mile above the hotel. Go to Jerry's Bar.
Review 57:The spa in our room could not be switched off or on from within the spa. Switch broken and had to use switch on wall 2 metres away from bath. Also wifi was weak and unreliable
Review 58:The View was sensational
Review 59:The bus broke down and we used a van. people had to wait over an hour due to crowding. You must fix this issue with a better solution for the quests.
Review 60:Beautiful view and wonderful restaurant.
Review 61:The wi-fi was erratic and several websites were not able to be accessed because the server was deemed to be insecure by them.
Review 62:Very attentive and helpful staff. Splendid views. Interesting decor and furnishings.
Review 63:Free wifi was unreliable. They had a outdated computer for customers. So was the furniture. The hotel was further away from Amalfi than I expected. But the shuttle service and Sita bus stop in front made the hotel very accessible for us.
Review 64:The view on the Amalfi coast, the friendly staff, the shuttle service, the restaurant and bar, the breakfast, the size of the room and balcony.
Review 65:In October the hotel shuttle bus didn't run between 11.00am and 3.00pm making it difficult to leave and return to the hotel between these times due to its location. The food in the dining room was very average.
Review 66:The view was everything you could have wished for.
Review 67:the TV was a bit old
Review 68:clean and quite place in the mountain. I liked the bar down there and the staff also the hotel provide a free bus to transfer you to downtime all the day time. it was very convenient for us. they don't have a restaurant but there are 2 restaurant up in the mountain so they call them to come and pick you for free. I liked the Jacuzzi in the room and the view was the best.
Review 69:Nothing all was good.
Review 70:The staff were excellent, everyone, room was large, good decor, comfortable, views were the best and the shuttle was the answer. Parked the car and Enjoyed life. Good visit should have been longer, will return. Happy Camper.
Review 71:We found the bed hard and there was three instead of four pillows. No further complaints.
Review 72:This hotel was clean and beautifully manicured. The scenery was beautiful from our balcony view. The staff were welcoming and accommodating to our request to stay an extra two nights. We would recommend to anyone interested and will return.
Review 73:Not much but a softer bed and pillow would have been appreciated by the wife.
Review 74:Hotel facilities plus the hotel free transport up and down to sea level. Staff in restaurant very pleasant.
Review 75:It was a bit too far out I thought you could walk to to amalfi but that is not possible. The walls were quite thin too. But overall it's a good hotel in a beautiful setting
Review 76:The views from the hotel were spectacular. The rooms were a very good size and the balcony was lovely. It's a bit out from amalfi but there was a bus from the hotel to Amalfi.
Review 77:If you're looking for a modern hotel do not go there, it's old and kept old , it's travel back in time.
Review 78:Very competent and friendly staff, breathtaking view from thd room, lobby bar and restaurant.
Review 79:Breakfast could have been better.
Review 80:My girlfriend and i visited a few weeks ago on a trip down the Amalfi coast, we flew to naples, bus to sorrento, bus to Amalfi where we stayed for 3 nights in the Grand Excelsior then we moved on to Ravello for 2 nights. Having read the reviews on Booking.com we knew what to expect, it lived up to our expectations and more. The hotel is situated just up on the hill outside of Amalfi centre, it's not walkable but the free shuttle bus they provide is great and reliable. We kind of liked this, being out of the hustle and bustle of the town, once up on the hill the views from the hotel are fantastic, all rooms have a sea view. The hotel decor is dated, bit like a time warp from the early 70's, but we liked this and felt it was part of the charm of the hotel, it might be dated but it's clean and well looked after. The staff were fantastic, very helpful, friendly and accommodating, helping us to organise trips out to Capri. The pool is a good size and a rare thing in these parts. There's plenty of space to lounge about on the verandas and gaze out to sea. We didn't eat a meal here so i cant comment on that but we did have breakfast and this could have been better, more variety and fresh ground coffee would have been nice. There is a private beach owned by the hotel that the shuttle bus drops off at, we didn't visit it as we were short on time but other guests told us how nice this was. All in all i would recommend this hotel.
Review 81:Breakfast buffet was slow to be replenished . And one day the scrambled eggs were "off' - a terrible smell .
Review 82:The location gives the hotel great views from the terrace where we had dinner each night . The family enjoyed the pool and we were able to get lunch on the terrace adjacent - very handy . Very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 83:the quality of the food provided is inadmissible for the 4 stars prices. The breakfast was horrible!
Review 84:the view from the room's balcony is very beautiful and the room very spacy and old fashioned.
Review 85:The beds were too hard, the pillows too flat and the water pressure was terrible.
Review 86:The view and location of the hotel were amazing. Our room was also a generous size. The food was fresh and delicious.
Review 87:Waiting for over an hour and a half for a shuttle bus to city center at 8:30am because they were all full. We didn't get on 2 busses because we refused to push and shove to get on. WiFi should be through out the hotel, not just the lobby.
Review 88:Great views and friendly staff. Comfortable room with large balcony.
Review 89:Two minor points... No tea/coffee making facilities in the room & the bed was low, hard & uncomfortable ..
Review 90:Amalfi is such a beautiful, idyllic, unspoilt part of Italy. The hotel was up in the mountain overlooking the harbour & town. Can't put into words the view.. Loved the free bus service laid on by the hotel to take you to the private beach & town centre.
Review 91:No one told me that if I leave the hotel and do not take the last bus back, there is no way to get back to the hotel. I had to call the hotel, luckily I bought a European phone, they sent a car who charged me 50 euros to drive from the Amalfi city center to the hotel. This is ridiculous at 1am (we went to a local party that seemed like the entire town was at) because I had previously taken taxis and they cost 20 euros every time. I wish someone would have warned me about this prior to leaving the hotel.
Review 92:Amazing views!!!!! Great Pool!! Great Breakfast! The restaurant/bar staff was very, very good! Antonio at the bar and Antonio in the restaurant are awesome!
Review 93:Hard beds, hard pillows, leaking toilet, broken and too small flat screen, dirty carpets, dated decor, location that wasn't even Amalfi, shuttle ride down and up,
Review 94:Personnel Nice balcony
Review 95:Outdated style of hotel, had to pay for use of private beach, at certain points of the balcony you could see into the neighbours room
Review 96:Views, friendly staff, hotel bus to Amalfi or complimentary public bus ticket, breakfast waitor was lovely in the morning
Review 97:Basically it was all great.
Review 98:Seems like the best hotel in Amalfi. Very nice crew and staff. They upgraded us to a better room with no charge, which was extremely nice of them. Best views in the world from the room's terrace. Feels like paradise. Quiet and Romantic. Great breakfast, amazing pool. The shuttle services to the private beach and downtown were extremely helpful and convenient. Highly recommended.
Review 99:Wi-Fi is only available at the lobby
Review 100:Nice hotel with a great view to Amalfi coast, helpful staff. The shuttle bus service to the beach and Amalfi center is available.
Review 101:Extremely outdated hotel, felt like we stepped into a different era.Not a place for young couples and the only hotel we stayed in during our two week trip in Italy where wifi was only available in the foyer. The only element of comfort offered to us was the fact that the hotel was clean.
Review 102:Staff were very helpful and it was a very clean hotel. The views wereincredible.
Review 103:No Wi-Fi in rooms, just lobby. Service on terrace snack bar could be slow and a bit offhand - this was in contrast to service in other areas of hotel. Cave bar didn't seem to be in use which was a shame.
Review 104:Stunning views of Amalfi. Rooms lovely - high ceilings, terrace and sea views. Hotel generally had an elegant feel. Courtesy bus into Amalfi a real bonus. Terrace snack bar overlooking bay was beautiful. Pool area excellent. Lots of seating areas throughout hotel. A friendly greeting each day at breakfast, very cheerful. Little village Pogerola 2 minute drive up hill from hotel has a 2 very good restaurants.
Review 105:Our group was "upgraded" and the three couples ended up having different qualities of room. We booked a room with a balcony and we got a "French balcony" which isn't a balcony at all! Our air conditioner didn't work either. The manager, who was very rude to us, finally changed our room.
Review 106:the view was magnificent and our 'final' room was very nice.
Review 107:The Hotel and the rooms are very old;you can hear everything through the walls from the neighbours rooms and from above!! The rooms with conection doors to the neighbour rooms are terrific!! It is not possible to sleep !! Unfriendly staff at the reception, we would like to have a quiet room ... it was not possible until booking.com interceded ! Never again!!
Review 108:Location
Review 109:Restarant was mediocre
Review 110:Space, comfort location

Review 112:the hotel is ready for a refurb
Review 113:The views, good breakfast good pool area all staff very pleasant and helpful hotel bus works well
Review 114:pretty much everything related to the hotel, the staff, the service, etc... I paid more than 200 Euros and I think it's a rip off.
Review 115:The view...
Review 116:Everything
Review 117:Staff decisamente insufficiente

Review 127:Quite far up the hill so had to endure the frightening bus journey up and down each day.
Review 128:Staff fantastic. Stunning views. Excellent suite.
Review 129:outdated hotel, rooms are not very clean, terrace wasnt cleaned at all during our stay
Review 130:1. Lovely Sea View from our room 401 2. Excellent Food 3. Good Staff
Review 131:Over priced drinks and poor service. The coca cola tasted like a bad soda stream.
Review 132:Free bus shuttle.
Review 133:Spectacular view and lovely private beach. Crystal clear water and relax.
Review 134:Overly expensive for fairly basic room, food and service.
Review 135:Friendly staff
Review 136:Distance to get to Amalfi centre. Dated style/decor. Damp room and no so good a/c.
Review 137:Views, terrace was good size and nice staff.
Review 138:Uncomfortable beds. Food average
Review 139:Beautiful private beach. Clean water.
