Reviews for Il Saraceno Grand Hotel
Review 1:Shuttle bus schedule, last bus leaving at 8pm was far too early to enjoy evening in Amalfi and the only alternative for return after 9pm was taxi for 25eur... Internet didn't work in the room, some staff members are rather unfriendly.
Review 2:Size of the room, balcony, beautiful view and hotel itself - it is amazing building
Review 3:The staff was very formal and not very communicative. Polite, but not engaging. Restaurant was very formal and food was good, but pricey for quality. Ate there first night and then did not return. Furniture in room was sparse and very dark, heavy wood with a handmade appearance. Bed and chairs were built low to ground and not very comfortable for a tall couple. Found a place next door run by a young couple that had great, reasonably priced food and was bright and cheerful with great view.
Review 4:This is a one-of-a-kind property that was worth the ticket just to see. The hotel cascades down the mountain from the main coast highway to a private beach below (est. 150 feet). We walked about halfway down to the pool level and then rode the elevator to the black sand and rock beach level. Most of exterior is castle-like and built of local stone. There are many tiled patios and secluded areas on the walk in this hidden retreat. Has a Spanish Moroccan appearance and lots of mixed period antique furnishings inside. We had the spacious "Romeo" suite which had a small private balcony, with an olive tree growing up to it, overlooking the Mediterranean and the former home of Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren in their heyday. Free breakfast in the morning on patio overlooking Med was a perfect start to the day. The hotel had a handy shuttle that ran to Amalfi and we used a couple of days. Had a rental car, but hassles of driving and parking in Amalfi were happily avoided.
Review 5:Rooms and breakfast are basic and more to the standard I'd expect from a 3 star hotel. Very reliant on the hotel shuttle into Amalfi town.
Review 6:The hotel exterior, grounds and private beach are superb.
Review 7:The staff at dinner and breakfast weren't the friendliest. I understand that you run a tight ship but a welcoming smile at dinner says a lot and we didn't get that.
Review 8:The view of the lake from the grounds was beautiful. The staff upon check in were very nice. Breakfast buffet was very good
Review 9:The shuttle service wasnt as large or regular as it could be, expensive for food and drinks (6 euros for a bottle of water)
Review 10:The view was unparalleled, the breakfast plentiful and the staff friendly.
Review 11:Asked the front desk to help us book ferry service and their response was (we are not a travel agency)Later that day we asked for a bucket of ice.We were directed to the hotel bar where I was charged 5 Aeros.
Review 12:Historical building ,good location with shuttle service
Review 13:terrace & beach restaurants closed for no good reason ( I suspect b/c they host a wedding at hotel using the terrace nearly every day) so unable to eat outside at hotel in evenings- don't go to Italy to eat inside! Too far to walk into town to al frescoe restuarants. Not enough free buses into amalfi & stop too early at 8pm) . Public buses too full & also stop too early. So have to drive or get expensive taxi back after an evening out. No bar at pool. No fresh juice at breakfast. No tea/coffee making facil in room No room service outside daytime
Review 14:ocean view at breakfast from terrace & from room. helpful staff. free bus to/from amalfi- when it ran. English news avail on TV in room.
Review 15:Loved the service at the terrace bar, but very pricy. I sensed this was not the best hotel for families with kids, although no one did/said anything to us, there were some curious looks--mine were the only two in the entire hotel, although we were off-season. There's not much nearby to access by foot (which can be good or bad).
Review 16:Beautiful views and terrace. Friendly, accommodating staff. Excellent food and drinks on the terrace bar. We really enjoyed the pool and snorkelling off the private beach.
Review 17:Thaw the view is 7 stars, the hotel itself is a 4 star hotel. Don't expect to have all facilities as for the 5 stars. Breakfast is limited- very few options, if your going at the end of the season (September)- the hotel shuttle has a reduced time table and the last one is around 8PM (From 11 AM to 3.15 PM - no shuttle). If you don't catch the shuttle then you pay 25 euro for one way. If you are lucky you can find someone staying at Il Saraceno you can share the taxi. After 4 PM - the sun goes away at the beach (and btw this is no sand beach- small annoying rocks so do wear your swimming shoes). No spa, but you don't need one if is warm outside. :-)
Review 18:This hotel was probably fancy in the 80's and it still has his charm with the green patios and alleys. The view from the hotel it's 7 stars, private beach (very nice to have in Amalfi) and clean rooms. Staff is friendly - all of them are old indeed but they are very kind and respectful. Overall nice experience.
Review 19:needs remodeling bathrooms, repair noisy/vibrating AC unit, some comfortable chairs on balcony, more variety for breakfast would be appreciated; needs finish up masonry at elevators from swimming pool . Their shuttle bus to city broke and was replaced by a small car for 4 people , so you had to wait up 1 hr while the driver made multiple trips to go to or from Amalfi ( or take a taxi for 25 Euro). In USA this is not a 5 star hotel, not even 4 based on room/bathroom , but it is in terms of staff training, lobby and in Italy it seems that once you got your 5* rating , you keep it even if the hotel went down,,,same noted at other hotels.
Review 20:staff very attentive; full sea view from everywhere; free towels at the beach; they change bed every day if you do not stop them;
Review 21:Could not believe that a facility so amazing and sooo well managed in 2015 has such terrible terrible WIFI. Also no WIFI in the rooms. This needs to be put on their list of priorities to remedy ASAP.
Review 22:EVERYTHING
Review 23:Bad furnishings. Not 5 star!!! Maybe 3 or even 2(tables and chairs)! Broken dressing table mirror, faded finish. Also, no WiFi in rooms, slow speed where available.
Review 24:Amazing location, structure layout and views. Staff generally very good.
Review 25:A little confusing finding your way through the hotel. Thought some of the staff was a little snobby and unhelpful. No water available unless you want to pay Seven Dollars for a little bottle. No air condition through out the place. Terrible Wi Fi, unless your standing by the front desk. Starting to see some wear and tear through out the Hotel.
Review 26:Nice location, private beautiful beach, wonderful views. Employee's below management level were very nice and friendly. Wish the management could get their act together. It is a beautiful location!
Review 27:The location, facilities & staff were amazing. We booked a quadruple room for the family & enjoyed the most enormous suite - 2 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms with access to a balcony and amazing views. The pool and beach worked well and the snorkelling from the beach was a treat - there were fish to see even in the shallows. Would highly recommend.
Review 28:If this hotel had interested staff it would be 5 star. However, the grounds need a good clean, the breakfast staff that whilst in abundance could smile in the mornings and ensure that if and twice it did the breakfast is gone then perhaps as part of the job description would be to replenish it? Two mornings in a row, very dis interested staff. Turning up and looking the part is only part of the job. The beautiful seaside setting is spectacular, the food and attendants not so. The hgotel is in between Positano and Amalfi, so be prepared to go out for dining or BYO.
Review 29:An outstanding building with a wonderful presence, spectacular views and very private. a fantastic experience
Review 30:If you are looking for a 5 star or even a 4 star you will be significantly disappointed. I think the team heard most was "vacation ruiner" This hotel is not at all what the reviews would lead you to believe. It is very outdated and almost feels like they are on a budget and can't keep up with the maintenance. The layout is difficult to navigate with multiple small elevators, stairs and pathways. This is probably because of the old fort but it should be noted as many people will struggle to get to the beach. This hotel feels like a low end 2 star motel you would find on the road with no other option. Not a 5 star hotel on the Amalfi coast. The wifi only works in public rooms and is spotty at best.
Review 31:The front desk people worked hard to help and the drivers of the shuttle to the Amalfi town were pleasant and helpful.
Review 32:the reception team were great, the rest not so.
Review 33:The setting is fabulous, pool is huge and the internal stairs and lifts ensure you never go the same way twice.
Review 34:There were no tea or coffee making faciliteis in the room and no safe deposit box. The shuttle bus stopped at 8pm and a taxi back to the hotel was 25 euro's a joke, as it was only a 3km drive. You were unable to walk to and from town as the driving was horrendous and there are no footpaths. The toilet by the pool was a disgrace. The beach staff were not friendly or particularly nice. The hotel could do with some younger waiters with abit of personality. The furniture is old and tired in the rooms and I wouldn't class it as shabby chic!! There was a problem with the airconditioning in our room but we were able to move to another room after 3 nights.
Review 35:The location was beautiful on the side of a cliff overlooking the amalfi coast. The private beach and a guaranteed sunbed for each room.
Review 36:Staff appeared unhappy and the breakfast was atrocious, it looked like it had been out for days and the choice was limited. When we asked for poached eggs we got fried and were asked to pay extra for them.
Review 37:The staff is unprofessional, rude and very, very old and weird!!!! The worse is the beach responsible, who has some serious issues!!! The furniture, the elevators were from the 70s!!!! This is not a 5-star hotel - a 3 star one maybe!!!!
Review 38:The scenery is wonderful, but with the staff that this hotel has, it is hard to enjoy it!!!!! The sea and the beach should be delightful if the beach responsible would not run some shady schemes over there, i.e. selling access to the hotel beach to non-hotel clients!!!
Review 39:In our view not at all a 5-star-hotel: no WiFi other than in the lobby. Bad furniture in the room. Savings are made in the number and quality of staff. Kitchen: no need to try.
Review 40:Elevator was being serviced during daytime hours, a lot of stairs toclimb to reach destinations. Staff was not very attentive, I sat at thebar for over an hour before being offered a drink (only 7 other patronsthere). WiFi spotty at best. Big wedding spot, 2/3 days we werethere it was packed out for large weddings.
Review 41:Gorgeous hotel, excellent views. Clean beach, excellent food atrestaurant. Walking distance to multiple restaurants off site. Shuttlewas extremely convenient to Amalfi, free parking was a huge plus. Notmany kids running around... :-)
Review 42:The staff at the seaside is horrible, not friendly, if I would drown I'm sure nobody would be able to save me since the only thing the lifeguard does is being on the phone and sleeping. One night the bar closed 20 minutes early while there were still people there. (The normal guy at the bar however was excellent). Breakfast wasn't too good either, half an hour before closing a lot of food was already gone. The pool feels like it was something just there to get to five stars. The hotel feels more like a four star. The wifi is really bad the shuttle to Amalfi only rides till 20h. Getting a taxi back costs you 30 eye
Review 43:The settingis excellent, the castle is wonderful. The staff at the reception was very friendly and helpful, as were the waiters in the restaurant. Only the staff at the beach were inadequate.
Review 44:Wifi quality poor
Review 45:Excellent location, no street noise, wonderful brakfast, the beach is outrageous, two independant restaurants on the beach with reasonable prices.
Review 46:Limited menu if you are staying a while. Wifi worked in room but if you stepped out onto your balcony it didn't - even though it worked on the beach?
Review 47:Lovely old fort in the cliff face and a fantastic views. Wifi on the beach!
Review 48:I feel the property is dated and even though it is very clean it needs an update. Out room had all wood furniture and there was no cushions on the chairs so it was hard to relax in our room except the bed.
Review 49:The staff was amazing. Very friendly, caring and helpful. The place was as clean as it can be and I'm very picky. The view was nice.
Review 50:Why not free wifi in bedrooms.swimming pool open until say 6.30pm?
Review 51:Room excellent.Breakfast for English very good. Reception staff always helpful. Some waiters bit old and not very smiley.
Review 52:The hotel is very dated - we booked it because it was a 5-star resort at a reasonable, but it must have been 5 stars in 1975! The bedroom furniture looked like the Flintstones. Also, it is too far from Amalfi. The hotel provides a free shuttle (which is nice) but the last pickup from Amalfi is 8 pm. The last public bus leaves Amalfi at 9, so if you are there later for dinner (which you will be) you are at the mercy of taxi drivers in unmetered cabs, who charge 25 Euros for the 3 km ride to the hotel. There is no wifi in the rooms, and service is uneven. We were given a map of the area, but it was in Italian, even though we later learned they had English maps - a small detail, but details are what make an experience good or bad. We had heard that the town of Conca dei Marini was nice, so we asked the young guy at the desk if we could walk there. He told us to go left, walk a short way and turn right. What he didn't tell us was that the town was at the top of the mountain and literally would have taken hours to walk to. So we wasted most of an afternoon walking halfway up the mountain. That night, we asked the two guys at the front desk to make us a restaurant reservation (we named the restaurant). They said they couldn't do it, and to come back tomorrow and talk to the concierge. Seriously, the front desk people can't call in a reservation?
Review 53:The hotel has beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast. Best of all, they have a private beach with nice lounge chairs and a beach bar to get lunch. After a busy time of touring, it was really nice to enjoy a day at the beach.
Review 54:Upon our arrival the staff was so welcoming... Taking our bags , parking the car and to our siorise a bottle of Prisecco with fresh fruits arrived to enhance our welcome! You have gained a permanent resident!
Review 55:Nothing!
Review 56:Great location very close to Amalfi center. Very unique and beautiful stone fortress like hotel and grounds. Very large terrace common area with stunning views of ocean and coast line.
Review 57:You can see the Il Saraceno when you're taking a boat in from Positano and it stands out incredibly along the cliffs of Amalfi. I really like that it was removed from the Amalfi proper and that the hotel was as authentic on the inside as it looked from the water. Wonderful staff and incredible accommodations.
Review 58:Beautiful situation and very friendly staff. On the main local bus route to Amalfi and Positano so travel without the car was very easy when not using hotel mini bus. What was disappointing that we had 2 rooms booked, but they didn't both have the same beautiful views. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and woud highly recommend this treasure to anyone else. Maybe not a particularly child friendly hotel with situation and furnishings. The whole coastline is not for children with no sandy beaches...
Review 59:Definitely not five star International standard, local restaurants taking its custom! Because more enterprising and more atmosphere! Charging extra for eggs at breakfast should not apply if five star status
Review 60:The view from the hotel and our room
Review 61:The wifi is only in common areas and Thebes linen could do with an upgrade
Review 62:We stayed her for the wonderful beach and view. The hotel is quite retro and a bit tired but still very charming. The gardens and beach area are beautiful. We spent most of our trip relaxing on sun beds and swimming which was amazing. The view from our room over the ocean was to die for. The bed was comfortable and breakfast on the terrace was great. The free parking eliminated stress.
Review 63:It was all great!
Review 64:The hotel is absolutely beautiful!!! Loved every minute of it. Had such a good time exploring this whole property. So much to see. Room had stunning views of the sea.
Review 65:Due to the size and location of the hotel. The Internet had a much better signal in the reception and dining areas than the bedroom areas but after all it is surrounded by some of the steepest rocks and cliffs on the Amalfi.
Review 66:A most warm welcome awaited us by Raymondo and Guiseppe who were both exceptionally obliging in ensuring that our stay was first class. Although ancient, this incredible feat of original Arab fortress architecture has all the luxury of a modern first class hotel. This hotel is situated between the beautiful towns of Positano and Amalfi and its location has got to be one of the most spectacular views on the Amalfi coast. A full range of toiletries, slippers etc awaited us in our verry comfortable spacious room with a most panoramic spectacular sea view. The wide variety of breakfast delicacies on offer on the large sun terrace was enough to satisfy anyone`s taste buds and was very memorable. this is a great hotel and must be experienced for yourselves.
Review 67:Nothing
Review 68:The hotel is amazing. The breakfast was great with an amazing view to the sea in the open balcony. The room was very big with a sea view, nice beach and service. Special thanks to Antonio for incredable service!
Review 69:Although the hotel was on the seafront it was miles from the nearest town (Amalfi) for eating places. Had to get a cab as the shuttle bus didn't run frequently and the last bus back was at 8 pm
Review 70:the view was to die for. Large clean rooms
Review 71:I would not suggest to go to the restaurant. Breakfast is also not at the level of a five star hotel.
Review 72:Location is perfect, a beautiful sea. Even though you are 3,5 km from Amalfi, you have a bunch of places within walking distance (excellent restaurant Cielo Mare Terra), and a nice village towards Positano. Stunning view, rooms are very nice (I had a suite with a huge balcony for a very cheap price)
Review 73:The entire atmosphere is oldest. The hotel's personal showed no enthusiasm , no smile. The breakfast was poor like 2 star hotel. No fresh fruits no fresh juice, only bread , butter , some mozzarella and omlette. I asked for fried eggs and they charged me. The housekeeping ladies were so angry as they didn't say hello when you meet them on the corridor. When you pay 420 euro by night you are expected to get a 5 star treatment as the hotel is rated. But definitely this is not a 5 stars hotel ! Be aware!
Review 74:The location and the spectacular view.
Review 75:The food was good but not so special given the great location/accomodation
Review 76:Great authentic hotel, unique in its appearance Great service in general but especially the parking service Well located: all the freedom of the coastal area and Amalfi just a few minutes away
Review 77:Because of end season, you had to ask for service at the beach. No poolservice drinks etc... But when asked help was soon at hand. Restaurant was slow because again it was October 15 we think. Amalfi cost has it's weddings and that shows a bit.
Review 78:everything. Nice people, good breakfast. clean room. Helped us with everything.
Review 79:On a negative point, the hotel is located approx 4Km from Amalfi. We did have a hire car for half the week which was invaluable. The last shuttle from Amalfi back to the hotel was far too early (20.10hrs). However, this did not stop us from enjoying our nights out. It took approx 25 mins to walk back uphill to the hotel at a brisk walking pace. We loved the medieval atmosphere of the hotel.
Review 80:We loved our stay in this lovely hotel with it's own private beach. Salvatore our waiter was very friendly and helpful. In fact all the staff were very helpful.
Review 81:Some of the staff could have been a bit more cheerful but perhaps they were tired at the end of the season :-/
Review 82:Felt special from the start, the person welcoming us was lovely as was one particular person who served food, which was lovely. Clean and excellent views with access to beach and a small pool - lovely!
Review 83:This was our first trip to Italy and we started with a stay on the Amalfi Coast. Ill Saraceno was beautiful. The beach is a rocky style beach, but who cares, the views and water are spectacular. The beach staff was very helpful also. The front desk arranged a scooter rental as well as a taxi back to Napoli. The service by the hotel staff wax excellent and the breakfast every morning was delicious. The only complaint is that we could not get an iron to press some clothes. They had to be sent to Amalfi. Overall a small complaint, but a surprising detail missed by the hotel. If we come back to Amalfi we would definitely stay there again.
Review 84:the ground were not well kept it was a little sad to see it as I was there a few years ago and it was much better.
Review 85:I like the room and the view very much
Review 86:Breakfast variety and quality overall. No sandy beach but water was clean and crystal clear. No fast internet
Review 87:Very polite and helpful staff with fluency in English Majestic breathtaking view to the gulf of Amalfi from all hotel areas Very nice pool but with no service Clean and tidy hotel. Very good parking service free of charge Wide Wi Fi coverage Excellent service at hotel's bar and restaurant A well organised trip to Capri Excellent restaurant suggestions by the reception staff. Well organised and clean beach
Review 88:Internet access is not good in most areas of the hotel. I didn't like that bell boy was very obvious that he wanted his euro or two not realizing that some guests may not even have small change with them (he asked me 2 times: should I close door now, obviously looking for tip but I simply did not have any small change).
Review 89:Staff is old school but they are very good in what they do, very professional.
Review 90:The breakfast buffet was pathetic and not even the level of a 3 star in the US. The hotel itself is so dated and decor is ancient. Felt like we were staying at a grandma's house of modest means. The standards of rating in Amalfi is very off. This is a 3 star hotel, not a five star, but this was true of the other 2 "five" star hotels we stayed at during our trip. Additionally at check in the asked to hold on to the passports to process and would take half an hour. They assured us they would lock them up afterwards. In fact when we can back to retrieve them 1 hour later they were not done. When we came back 2 hours later they had the passports in the room key slots which were within 2 feet of the front counter (which was really just a little counter island which anyone could walk around on either side). The room key/mail slots were not even behind the counter but to each open side.
Review 91:Staff was good.
Review 92:Furniture is a bit dated and not luxurious. We valued the location, views and pool/beach much more than room comfort, so this was not a big deal for us. The hotel is not in any particular town, so you do have to travel by car/bus to go anywhere.
Review 93:Terrific views of the Amalfi coast; great outdoor terraces; very nice to have both pool and beach at the hotel; kids loved staying in an old castle. The hotel must have taken earlier reviews about staff to heart as we found all staff to be consistently kind and service-oriented.
Review 94:Only one complaint: the shuttle didn't run all day and stoppedearly evening, which doesn't give guests any choice when they wantto eat in the town except to catch a taxi back. They hold you to ransomand all charge 20 euro for about 3kms back to the hotel. Outrageous! When we had the temerity to question this huge fare, the taxi drivertold us we were stingy.
Review 95:The gobsmacking views, the lovely professional waiters and staff and theambience of such a special place. The private beach and crystal cleardeep waters.
Review 96:Rest of staff average.
Review 97:This is great site that needs freshing up. One of the best site in Amalfi cost. Staff at the reception is excellent particularly Antonio.
Review 98:Hotel is utilised for high class weddings which can slightly affect use of hotel facilities for guests, however we found them well managed causing minimal impact and the music drifting up from the reception held at beach level very pleasant.
Review 99:Hotel with amazing views and private beach. Very helpful and friendly staff in all areas and great restaurant with good food, great service at al a carte price..
Review 100:Shuttle bus to Amalfi, stops too early at 8pm. Staff at beach not as friendly as rest of Staff!
Review 101:Beautiful, stunning setting. Stayed in Junior Suite, lovely spacious room.....but no balcony? Friendly, helpful staff. We loved it, and will be back! P.S. Recommend buying a pair of beach shoes, available in Amalfi at 14 Euros a pair!
Review 102:Staff in the main hotel were helpful but we found the staff at the beach less so when we wanted assistance to move chairs into the shade when it was too windy to have umbrellas up. We were just told no we can't with no better option offered
Review 103:-location is perfect -breakfast is good -view from the room is really amazing Highly recommend!
Review 104:Location is away from Amalfi town
Review 105:The hotel decor
Review 106:Nice view
Review 107:The bedroom had very dated furniture
Review 108:The facilities and view were excellent. The shuttle bus service into Amalfi
Review 109:They really should offer free wifi in the rooms instead of just the lobby
Review 110:The staff is very friendly and the hotel is so beautiful
Review 111:The staff are exceptional Sad to find the champagne and smoked salmon off the breakfast menu Salvatore and Giovani are to be highly commended
Review 112:The private beach and facilities were beautiful .The view from our bedroom was breathtaking.
Review 113:Staff could have been friendly particularly beach staff
Review 114:Beach was very pretty
Review 115:I would have hoped for a better selection at breakfast and also the coffee was very slow after order.
Review 116:The location and views were spectacular.
Review 117:Bad attitude of staff
Review 118:Pool and beach area and exterior of Hotel
Review 119:wifi is so weak almost no wifi in the rooms, bed matress is tough little bit, the TV stations are only italian!!
Review 120:The location, the staff, the hotel
Review 121:Location and private beach. Excellent service, including valet parking. Restaurant was amazing.
Review 122:This is definitely not 5 star hotel, maximum 3. Everything is very old, breakfast is poor, beach is of bad quality.
Review 123:Nothing, only wifi was good
Review 124:Aperol spritz cost 16 euros as was classed as a cocktail.
Review 125:Stunning hotel. unusual layout and great views. Good quality food and ambience.
Review 126:Poor wifi connection, but this is being renovated.
Review 127:The stunning views over the water.
Review 128:no one explained how the air conditioning worked/didn't work .
Review 129:swimming in ocean, exploring the hotel and enjoying the food.
Review 130:Stunning hotel very friendly staff and very clean rooms.
Review 131:nothing
Review 132:friendly staff and beautiful room overlooking bay
Review 133:staff Grumpy, some of them are rude
Review 134:View from the hotel
Review 135:no wi fi in the room
Review 136:the superior room
