Reviews for Discovery Melbourne
Review 1:Had to move rooms twice in my 4 day stay and wasn't told so had housekeeping staff telling me to move despite not being told when I'd checked in. Poor showers - freezing or boiling, no nice temperature. Only 2 ladies toilets on one of the floors, think it was 2nd floor.
Review 2:Free breakfast and cinema were good, as was the cafe and bar facilities.
Review 3:We were moved around twice which was annoying. The place is also really big so you only get the opportunity to talk to people in your room.
Review 4:The beds were really comfortable
Review 5:Wifi is expensive and not so quick, but it never dropped out and there would have been a few hundred devices connected during christmas week so i guess cant complain to much, lack of power sockets in rooms,
Review 6:Staff were great, let me check in at 7.30am, and swapped my veds multiple times,( i emailed vefore hand to reauest vottom bunk due to back injury but on arrival it turns out it was unassigned veds so was just a case of find8ng a room with a bottom bunk, wrd time lucky, this hostel is very busy so i was lucky tbh and grestful, rooms are pretty decent and comfy, but lacking in power points but fhere were plenty downstairs so wasnt an issue really, breakfast was plenty enough although for the amount of guests staying, im guessing 100+, there was only a dozen breakfast bowls, not so great but i was often up early so didnt have to wait
Review 7:The staff were really rude, the queues for reception were always huge, Iam not sure if my room was just rare but I was in a 16 bed dorm and itwas huge. So big that the beds were no where near eachother and sonobody talked to eachother ever. You would go in and say hi and getignored. As a solo traveller you are looking to make friends and I foundthis hostel quite intimidating. The rooms are always normally small sothat the beds are near eachother and it's easy to strike upconversation. The room was also filthy, I had make up all over mysheets, pizza under the bed. I booked for 3 weeks over Christmas and Ichecked out after a week. My room may have been a one off but either wayit was terrible.
Review 8:Good location
Review 9:The girl that checked us in was not friendly at all and sounded like she had somewhere better to be.Gave the same uninterested welcome speech to everyone she checked in. Made it that when we had an issue we wernt keen to talk to her but had to in the end. Helped us but not even an apology or smile. My sister had a squeaky bed, and the photos online of your facilities did not match what it was actually like. Not as nice/clean as the pictures. Not what we were expecting at all. We canceled our last 2 nights.
Review 10:Location was good. Has what you need.
Review 11:Not that clean, rooms not clearly shown on how to get to them. Didn't like the showers. Too many young ones and I was the only older person. They didn't supply soap or towel
Review 12:Had a nice Cafe
Review 13:Some showers seemed to lack water pressure even when no one else was using bathroom.
Review 14:Awesome hostel. Comfy rooms, large common areas, easy to meet people and a good vibe about the place.
Review 15:The kitchen closes at 11pm to 6am, so if you need to leave early like I did, it's better to have your stuff with you.
Review 16:The location near Elisabeth Street, Queen Victoria Market and reachable by free tram. They have a cool pub crawl every thursday. Heaps of fun!
Review 17:Kitchen was ok, not much equipment and dirty sometimes but there are a lot of people using it.
Review 18:A great hostel for travellers any age with helpful staff. Nice roof top but not much going on. Toilets and room were clean.
Review 19:Rooms, corridors and general areas could do with a good clean and repaint. The queues for reception were totally unacceptable when checking out. Either they need more reception staff during peak times or they need to provide a separate desk for people checking out i.e. just dropping the key card off to get the $10 deposit back.
Review 20:Comfy beds. New modern showers and toilet facilities. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. OK hostel for a few nights but wouldn't want to stay here any longer.
Review 21:The kitchen was horrible. The ovan was broken amongst other appliances. I do not blame the staff for the kitchen mess it is solely on lazy people staying there but I feel they are maybe letting this slide to much as it was ridiculous and have not experienced this at the other 27 hostels so far on my trip. one night before cooking dinner I cleaned 3 sinks full of dishes and wiped down sides just because was so dirty.
Review 22:The location was great, staff very friendly and helpful, facilities great with the lounge, bar and cafe. the room was also comfortable and spacious.
Review 23:If your room is on the opposite end to the bathroom, u have to walk a long way to take shower. And the wall is too thin, you can hear the talk on the next door very clearly.
Review 24:The location is pretty good. It only takes 15 mins to reach Myer or David Jones. And 10mins to the central station.
Review 25:My experience here was very poor. This is a huge hostel and I understand the importance of maintaining safety, but whenever you move to one part of the hostel to another, you must use your key card 3 or 4 times. This makes you feel unwelcomed and makes the place feels cold and impersonal. Add that to the fact that the staff will ask you if you are staying there each time they see you... literally. Breakfast is a joke... To check myself in, I had to stand in a HUGE line for at least 20 minute and the receptionist was cold at best. There is no free Internet, even though there is a huge sing that says 'Free Internet at Discovery'... you had to pay $5 AUD to use it. When I was checking out they wouldn't let me keep my luggage in their storage room because I had already checked out... A real class act, Discovery! This place cares nothing about its guests, in their view we are nothing but cash cows ment to be drained dry to the last drop.
Review 26:The location and the rooftop.
Review 27:Charged me an extra 6% for paying on a card, location was not so close to the city. United is so much better. This place full of rude French backpackers.
Review 28:Only thing good about this place is the reception manager was lovely.
Review 29:Wifi should be free in the public area. They ask u to left before 10,or u will not get the key deposit $10,so many people have to hurry up,it's not to do this.Really.
Review 30:The bed is soft and the TV is big,the kictech is okay, and the wifi is not avaiable.
Review 31:Staff to jung and without skills. Staff was getting stressed very fast just because of busy time. They were confused, rude and not very smart. Older staff with more skills would be better and more professional. Kitchen very dirty, not enough stuff and critters on the floor!
Review 32:Location
Review 33:Kitchen smell going to lv 4 Long wait at reception Room smaller than other place Ive been No free shampoo in bathroom No fresh towels
Review 34:Common area, and 24-7 ping pong table and pool table Great price on Friday night for queen bed
Review 35:Considering the money, great value. Basic breakfast and clean rooms and bathroom. Staff was friendly and 24/7 reception. Good wifi connection and a chill area. Lots of backpackers. Location is right in the middle of city center with free public transport which was very convenient.
Review 36:Great location, close to the Queen Victoria market. The bathrooms were clean, though the 4th floor one could do with an upgrade. The WiFi was great, free and available everywhere, not just common spaces.
Review 37:You have to pay to play pool. Be careful of the date you choose, if you stay during holidays there might be a lot of classes on fieldtrip which means that you can't sit where you want because tables are reserved, you can't have breakfast on time because children have to eat first...
Review 38:The staff is really happy to help, you can ask anything. The hostel is at maximum 15 minutes walk of everything in Melbourne (it's a maximum !!)
Review 39:There is only one shower/bathroom on one big floor.Inside the bathroom, there are 5 or 6 shower booth and 3 or 4 toilets but my room was the opposite site of it so i had to walk all the way to get to toilet which was a bit annoying... There is a locker you can leave your luggage (you can not leave your luggage for free which was surprised as most of all hostel allow you to leave them for free). The problem was the locker is downstairs and i had to bring heavy suitcase up and down. It cost $8 for locker as well. Not letting a traveler to leave their luggage for free and also making them carry the bags to downstairs is not cool at all.... you have to pay for wifi as well.... This place is not for a backpacker who don't want to spend much..!!
Review 40:Can be slightly difficult to navigate due to non existant signage after leaving the lift. People with a bad sense of direction or adventure may need to avoid.
Review 41:Super friendly staff, chilled vibe at the entry took me back to my days of high school as early 00's rock ballads were playing (Good Charlotte). Massive space for an 6 bed dorm, slept soundly despite snorers. :D
Review 42:The toilets were dirty clogged during my stay. Should have cleaning more frequent since its holiday season.
Review 43:It's value for money and it is in an ideal location
Review 44:Corridors and bathrooms are extremely cold, one oven door is missing and other has to be held shut in kitchen. Bed is extremely wobbly so every time I climb up to bed I wake up the bottom bunk
Review 45:The showers are probably better in a prison, but thankfully I have no prison experience. It is so old and decrepit there should be a warning for unsuspecting guests. Its so old and rundown it would be nice to let the homeless live there for free.
Review 46:That I got my money back for the night I didn't stay. the staff were nice and friendly.
Review 47:The locker was pretty small, even could not fit in my small suitcase. There a pedestal fan, not sufficient enough to cool the room. The luggage storage charges were a bit high, also flexible luggage storage hours were not available. Otherwise, it was a very good stay and I would surely recommend others.
Review 48:Cleanliness, courteous behaviour of staff, no noise, well maintained kitchen and toilets, good discipline, close to Aldi and Tram Stops. Stayed for 2 nights and my roommates were very helpful and friendly as well.
Review 49:The hostel was quite, was a bit of noise from outside occasionally I liked the window to the fresh air Adequate toilet and showers, no lining up Felt secure with the card entry LIFTS
Review 50:That I didn't feel out of place and I enjoyed the great atmosphere . I couldn't believe the range of activities offered and complimentary breakfast is amazing......
Review 51:There were cobwebs in my room and the doors were so loud I didn't sleep well. The toilets smelt awful
Review 52:All the staff apart from one female receptionist were friendly and helpful.
Review 53:Filthy kitchen dirty rooms and dirty floors and hallways not like the pictures at all ! Won't have stayed if wasn't desperate ! Horrible bathroom showers so short u need to squat to wash
Review 54:Friendly staff nice on arrival
Review 55:Girl next room coughed all night, boys were noisy in the hall outside my room, neither are related to establishment though :-)
Review 56:Happy hour, free pool and own room
Review 57:I paid $60 for a bed in 4-female room. other room mate just spent $ 36 on one bed. This is unfair ! I booked and paid my bed more than two weeks in advance on line.
Review 58:No free storage for baggage, just wanted to leave it for an hour or so. Cost a lot due to F1 being on during my stay, could have offered cheaper or free wifi as an extra for backpackers.
Review 59:Staff were very helpful and friendly. Good location close to free tram line.
Review 60:The bathrooms and the rooms are not that great. There is only one girls bathroom for a whole floor which contains probably 15 shared rooms. There are 4 Toiletts and 8 showers, smelly and it didn't seem really clean. I only stayed for two nights, but during that time the cleaning team didn't come to clean our room once. I even had to change the covers myself as i checked in and found my bed was not done!! The receptionists were really nice, though, and gave me a free dinner voucher.
Review 61:The entrance area is pretty nice, the food at the bar is really good. It looks really taken care of. The receptionists were really nice, they helped and explained.
Review 62:The toilets/showers were filthy (used women's sanitary pad on floor of shower and the rancid smell of faeces and vomit). The room was average. I also couldn't sleep because the doors in adjoining rooms slammed shut every time someone opened them. SOOOO LOUD!!! Having said that, the staff were actually all really lovely. When I walked in on someone in my dorm having, ahem.. relations with a random, they did everything they could to move me to another room ASAP and offered to accompany me to get my things. Shame there aren't enough cleaning staff to keep the place sanitary.
Review 63:real average bathroom, esp shower. great rooftop that they seem to use as storage, mega under-utilized space! dont let you take alcohol into your rooms.
Review 64:cheap, good staff and a bar in house. fan in the private room.
Review 65:The air con looked 30 years old and was covered in dust, not to mention there was no way of reaching it to even check if it worked. On a weekend that almost reached 40 degrees, this wasn't really ideal.
Review 66:The location was great - food, shops, trams all within a short walk. Was perfect for a cheap easy place to crash over a busy weekend.
Review 67:they withdraw my money from my bank again.i never sign for it,but they withdrawed my money and said to me they never withdraw my money from my banck. I asked to them about this problem again and again, but they didnt answer to me exactly. It was sucks. When i come back to korea,i called to booking company and they checked it.finally i can take back my money after 1month. Nobody didt try help me in the discovery melborounne.Isnt it suck? Even they said call me back, but never call me back again.
Review 68:construction noise, smelly hallway, breakfast: was constituted of toast and spread, no more milk left, no place to sit, noisy.
Review 69:location, nice staff, low price.
Review 70:Some of the showers needed maintenance.
Review 71:The location was perfect. The rooms were fine and the facilities were great. For example the cinema room for a rainy day, and the club within the hostel.
Review 72:Hostel is definitely for you if you want to meet lots of people and party hard most nights. Walls are paper thin, and disadvantages come with the main clientele being young backpackers e.g. noise in corridors and next door rooms until 1am and used condoms sitting on the edge of the communal bathroom bin (on several occasions.) Friend found a used sanitary towel in the shower.
Review 73:Location was excellent, in CBD, near tram lines within free tram zone. Bed (lower bunk of a twin room) fairly comfortable.
Review 74:The staffs were bad, not that they were unfriendly or mean but they are ignorant. I was waiting at the receptionist counter and they saw me yet they did not approach me immediately but continuing to do other things slowly. The issue now is, there was no other customer waiting to be served or being served at the moment so I assume that everything that's on his hand should be done later on after he served me or at least come to the desk and greet me first and inform me to give him a minute or so. He just ignored me. That's bad service.
Review 75:The location is indeed very good and accessible
Review 76:One bathroom and one chowder room in each floor and the floor have minimum 20 room each room at least 4 or 6 Bathrooms are not clean. It's so horrible Bed cover has not changed for 6 days. Ground very dirty. The rooms are very warm despite the presence of fans. Many of the problems. There are told not to drink alcohol inside the hotel, but some guest uncommitted
Review 77:The kitchen it's very good big and a lot of elements but crowded
Review 78:Small hiccup with room allocation, but not a real problem, quickly rectified. How fussy should I be? Only white bread available one day, but others had wholemeal. Breakfast is supplied - what more can you ask?
Review 79:Location is great, Every day there is some activity available either run by the hostel or nearby. Staff always available 24/7. Very friendly and accommodating.
Review 80:rooms were very poor
Review 81:nice to walk to the hot spots like Queen Victoria Market, Bourke St and Tram to St Kilda, backpackers find good travel Info in the Ground Floor Travel Office, Cheap Car Rental. .
Review 82:Extremely basic double room for price. Bed only, no comforts or conviniences, ie. Hooks, lamp, bedside table or bag rack. Would look for hotel for the small amount more required.
Review 83:Good value for shared dorm.
Review 84:Carpet in room could do with more cleaning & vacuum ing where meets wall. Cleanliness good apart from this aspect.
Review 85:Position of hotel, common rooms and amenities. Staff great. Great spot. Comfortable.
Review 86:That the bunk steps were too close to the window and being a large person found it hard to get the top bunk and i fell into the window, breaking the glass. Would like to see steps away from squishy wall spaces
Review 87:That it offered so many choices, cheap meals etc
Review 88:The girls toilets smelt of fish. There was often no toilet paper. The walls were very thin, could hear everything in the rooms next door. The windows didn't shut so you could hear all the city traffic all day and night.
Review 89:The rooms were warm, the staff were friendly and approachable.
Review 90:Vomit in the showers, vomit in the hallway and paper thin walls, could literally hear the bloke in next room yawn.
Review 91:The service was great when booking, friendly staff. Good coffee at bar
Review 92:Music in foyer was a tad too loud so if you were talking to someone you couldn't really hear them
Review 93:The overall service and the facilities were clean. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would stay there again if need to. Thank you
Review 94:The walls are very thin which isn't a good thing if you're are near noisy people. I had two nights of sleep deprivation.
Review 95:The location was good and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 96:Came early around 9am,but had to wait till around 2.20to check.no early check in possible.no place for safekeeping of luggage.have to pay for locker.checkout no extension for few hours.even though it was not full. No facilities for safe keeping.
Review 97:Nothing in particular
Review 98:friendly staff, real value for money, good location, excellent facilities, thoroughly enjoyed my stay would highly recommend Discovery Hostel and will certainly stay on my next visit to Melbourne
Review 99:conversations can be heard quite clearly between rooms so sleep quality will depend on who is the next room. In the dorm floor there is only one bathroom and its maintenance was a bit less thorough.
Review 100:the double bed room floors have more bathrooms which are kept quite clean. Staff was helpful with several matters
Review 101:Room small and dirty. Bathrooms dirty e With wet floors and very far away from our room. Kitchen very crowded and not clean birds were flying inside. Breakfast choices poor.
Review 102:Bunk bed had no ladder. Accessible by large circular wide spaced rungs at end of bed. Did not like the large windowless hole in the wall near our room on a bitterly cold day. Tiny room. Very basic furnishings. Bed and small knee high shelf. Small mirror. Two power points.
Review 103:Heater worked well.
Review 104:The quilt is so dirty (I've took a photo but find no way to upload and show it on this website); the room is full of unpleasing smell. I've stay several backpacker hotels with similar price in AU, and this is the worst so far. It harmed our Melbourne journey.
Review 105:The included breakfast is good.
Review 106:Breakfast
Review 107:Clean environment and friendly staff
Review 108:A bit noisy but I'm 60 so to be expected
Review 109:The staff
Review 110:Friendly staff, place, facilities are great
Review 111:Bathrooms,toilets and kitchen really dirty Hostel too big, always queue at the reception
Review 112:Location ok
Review 113:Mixed up with different gender even I had booking for female room only. Management not alert.
Review 114:Strategic location. Comfort bed.
Review 115:Mixed dorm
Review 116:Location,facilities
Review 117:Dirty rooms with trash on the floor, smelly
Review 118:Big Rooftop to hang out
Review 119:No guests allowed in single room
Review 120:Rooftop
Review 121:Bathroom's service
Review 122:the wall is so thin that it's not sound proof at all. WIFI is not free. breakfast was barely swallowable.
Review 123:nothing but the location
Review 124:Location of the hotel. And sometimes the bathrooms were unclean
Review 125:The place was nice and clean with facilities.. basic for backpackers
Review 126:Staff
Review 127:Nothing
Review 128:Security door on Level 4 wasnt working for a couple of days.
Review 129:Nice and quiet.
Review 130:not very clean, room so basic
Review 131:It was very dirty
Review 132:Location and staff help
Review 133:I dont know if the beds are changed at all? Had a 16bed dorm, not many people in the room. Simple, free breakfast.
