Reviews for County Arms Hotel Birr
Review 1:Room lacked comfort and was very dated. Our window was taped shut on one side. The shower facilities were quite dated. TV was old and had no stations bar two which were fuzzy and discoloured.
Review 2:Hotel communal areas were lovely and pool was great.
Review 3:The room was dire. Damp stains on the ceiling, one metal floor lamp for the whole room.Anyone reading had to take turns to sit near the light!! Only 2 cups/saucers for tea and 2 bathroom glasses even though we were 4 people. No attempt at decor in the room other than 1 tragic painting that was capable of giving nightmares. The bathroom roll holder was falling off the wall!!
Review 4:The staff were friendly and pleasant. The food in the bar and at the breakfast was very good.
Review 5:Lovely hotel in a great location. Birr castle and Lough boora a great attractions close by. Very friendly staff. Spacious rooms. Great choice for breakfast. Can't wait to come back with my kids so that they can have the pancakes
Review 6:We arrived very late in the evening and our room had a strange humming noise , we requested to change room and our request was dealt with quickly and efficiently by the very helpful night porter.
Review 7:The food was fantastic, we stayed for 4 days and everything we ate was delicious. The staff were brilliant, nothing was too much for them, very friendly and accommodating.
Review 8:Excellent service. All of the staff are so friendly - every one of them seems to come to work with a smile on their face. They made us feel so welcome I highly recommend it. Very good value and quality in the restaurant
Review 9:The bar staff was very abrupt and ignorant especially a young chap who was extremely rude
Review 10:The hotel was excellent all round breakfast was hearty one put ya right for the day
Review 11:The pool area and the change rooms need some brush up. And the customers need one "command" of vital importance: PLEASE, ALWAYS TAKE A SHOWER AFTER THE SAUNA AND STEAM ROOM BEFORE YOU JUMP IN THE POOL OR JACUCCI!
Review 12:A good location in a very interesting town. And what a private garden!
Review 13:Nil
Review 14:There were 7 of us celebrating a birthday with 3 rooms. We got a warm welcome, fast efficient service, attention and great food from staff in dining room, breakfast, drinks, bar food, night porter etc.. We had lovely modern clean comfortable rooms, with all amenities, great garden and pool and spa to die for! Even though hotel was full for Bank Holiday Weekend, we still got the best of everything.
Review 15:Got given a twin bed room when I was travelling by myself and made this clear - would have rathered a double bed. Other rooms compared to mine were worth the money, mine was not. Although I went to bed early I was kept up by my room literally shaking from the music being played downstairs, so it was a pointless venture.
Review 16:Pool/jacuzzi/gym
Review 17:Leisure Centre was spotless. Girl who worked there was really particular in her work and obviously took pride in keeping everything 'ship shape'. Lovely hot suana and steam room and jacuzzi. Loved the light coming from the ceiling into the swimming pool.
Review 18:Only thing towel holder was up way to high for me , if my husband wasnt with me I would not have been able to reach (I am only little!)
Review 19:Lovely surrounding, excellent friendly staff especially Claire on reception and chaps in the bar sorry lads didnt catch your names,
Review 20:funny smells in corridors and outside lifts spa a bit run down - paint peeling off ceiling in steam room overall the hotel could do with a refurbish
Review 21:nice friendly staff food in pub mostly good
Review 22:No wifi in room and window sills could do with a lick of paint.
Review 23:Staff were friendly, accommodating and excellent and as good if not better than you would meet in any five star hotel .
Review 24:It wasn't for the amount of use it got but mattress was very noisey every turn in the bed was recorded by the springs been sprung.
Review 25:Hotel staff from the moment I was greeted at the front desk were a pleasure to deal with! Location is excellent a little outside town but a nice leisurely 5 minute walk had you at Main St. Food was excellent I had an evening meal in the bar and breakfast no complaints about either. I didn;t make use of the spa/pool facilites maybe next time!!
Review 26:Mattress very old with no support - lumpy Only 1 light in the whole room, no bedside lights (not great for the children) Room situation above a smoking area - lucky for us the hotel was not too busy (no wedding on) TV in room was older than myself! Leisure facilities need to be upgraded, lots of sharp tiles etc
Review 27:Staff very Friendly
Review 28:We were given a very noisy room(2nd floor) the noise was a heavy vibration of a air handling system(my own knowledge), moved to the end of the building above swimming pool much quieter.
Review 29:The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, fresh fruit at breakfast also meat and cheese. town was within walking distance. The girl at reception changed us to another room with great courtesy and understanding.
Review 30:We all had a great stay at County Arms hotel! The staff were lovely and very helpful from reception, bar (for our dinner) to the leisure centre! We were very lucky to stay when Birr were having their fireworks display and thanks to Conor (Manager) who was so very nice and helpful and took time out to chat to us he also told us to go up onto the hotel balcony to watch the firework display to get a better view, which was amazing! We will defo come back for the comfort, good food, great leisure facilities and a lovely walk around the beautiful garden and see how the grapes are coming on and especially for the welcome the staff give you all through your stay! Would highly recommend this hotel to family and friends
Review 31:It is a very busy hotel, we stayed there mid-week and there was weddings every evening. This makes the bar and reception area too busy and short staffed. The noise from wedding guests continues until the early hours of the morning.
Review 32:The food in the bar was outstanding and very good value for money. The room was clean and comfortable. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
Review 33:We were guests at a wedding and even though the ballroom is beautifully decorated we found it very warm.
Review 34:The food was excellent and piping hot. Really efficient service.
Review 35:Hotel/accommodation 3 star quality. Presumably leisure centre responsible for 4th star.
Review 36:Birr castle and grounds fabulous. Heritage town well worth a visit as well as nearby Roscrea.
Review 37:Nothing to say all so good
Review 38:The friendliness of willie as he extended his friendliness and stories to my teenage boys which really made their weekend so appreciated
Review 39:found it tricky getting to a loo from the breakfast room...signage? Also make it easier to use the stairs....again signs!
Review 40:I loved the light and garden views. The entrance and parking area is so open and uncomplicated! The pool area is spacious, filled with natural light, and peaceful...no music or radio going ...thank you! Overall, a very positive experience and will recommend and return.
Review 41:Felt standard room was overpriced. It was very basic for €150 however it was very clean and well maintained.
Review 42:Lovely hotel very clean with friendly helpful staff. Fantastic food.
Review 43:The rooms are sparsely decorated which is quite depressing, there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the bedrooms or water and selection of TV channels is poor. For business travellers on their own these things matter as you spend time in your room. Also Birr Castle was closed even though it was June
Review 44:Food was good, chef was very obliging, staff were helpful and friendly
Review 45:room not ready when we arrive at 4pm. Then told us what we booked was not available. Staff didn't offer other room for us to rest even they knew I was pregnant until we ask again and again. When we finally got our room it was not clean. No staff apologize and no discount was offered. Will not recommend to anyone
Review 46:breakfast
Review 47:This appears to be an older hotel that has recently been renovated. Rooms big but seemed a little bare, even though they had everything a four star should have, couldn't quiet work out what was missing.
Review 48:Very friendly staff, great food, very good value, good location.
Review 49:On leaving the lift on the first floor, there is an unpleasant odour in the hallway. It is not masked by the presence of a large air freshener ! Should be addressed. Otherwise a superb hotel.
Review 50:Friendly atmosphere, good facilities, clean. Would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. Would return again.
Review 51:Breakfast was ok.... eggs were a bit on hard side, when asked for a soft egg it wasnt a problem but replacement egg was no better. Bad smell in foyer on 1st floor at elevators
Review 52:Friendly staff, room was big and comfy and very warm. Nice and quiet. Food was excellent.
Review 53:We wanted to book a few spa treatments for Saturday afternoon but the beautician only worked in the morning. I would definitely have returned for a spa weekend in the future if I had got the chance to experience the spa.
Review 54:Staff were great, the chef carried our bags all the way to our room. Bar staff were lovely and friendly. Any requests were met immediately. Clean and comfortable rooms.
Review 55:lights tv not working on one circuit , dirty sock left on seat from previous occupier , took photo .. told staff whhen leaving for a few hours , nothing done about it when got back phoned reception guy sent up fixed lights ,left sock ... as for staff at breakfast , but then again they were very young , to be honest would not stay there again , ithink when you leave a hotel like this in the care of i wont say young just inexperienced people everything is fine until a problem occurs and they just didnt have experience to solve the problem as they should of for the hotel that its sopposed to be ...
Review 56:Enjoyed my stay in the hotel. The staff were friendly, good sized comfortable room, good breakfast an facilities in the hotel were good. I also got a good rate for the room an thought the hotel was value for money
Review 57:Problems with electronic lock Cooked breakfast cold
Review 58:Lovely pool and spa facilities Great meals in bar Close to the beautiful Georgian town of Birr
Review 59:The smell of drains in the lobby's was disgusting. Room not very warm.Sadly spoiled it for us.
Review 60:Location good. Local restaurants great. Castle amazing.Staff lovely, obliging& friendly.
Review 61:Handle of bedroom door came away in my hand. No noise insulation between bedrooms: We could hear the bedroom next door answering a mobile phone at 05:30 and could hear the full conversation
Review 62:Very easy to find, room was very clean
Review 63:Didn t like the smell materialising from the leisure facilities which happened to be worse just outside of the restaurant. There wasn't much atmosphere in the restaurant either but think that was mainly due to it being one large room with no divisions. The TV in our room had a low maximum volume which made it impossible to listen to some of the channels.
Review 64:The food was very nice, both dinner (although there wasn't much selection) and breakfast which was bar far the best part of our stay. the staff extremely helpful and it was an attractive boutique style hotel close to town
Review 65:I arrived for breakfast at 10.32 and waitress said rudely breakfast is over but I didn't let that upset service I received
Review 66:Stayed here for a wedding the food was to die for especially lamb shank best ever tasted. The service was excellent
Review 67:Unfortunately the central heating broke down that night, and when we arrivwd, the windows were wide open, which was stupid in the circumstances. They did provide, eventually a small electric fire.
Review 68:the hotel was fine
Review 69:no tea or coffee making facilities or hair dryer in room.Restraurent not opened for evening meal ,dinner takenin bar area
Review 70:nice appearance outside ,with lovely gardens, staff pleasant ,good parking, walking distance of town
Review 71:Booked a triple room. When we arrived they had no record of our booking. The print out was then found in the back room. Took 30 mins to check in.No triple rooms left, so an extra bed was squeezed into a twin room.Only 2 cups etc No biscuits. No TV remote. No wifi in room. Can rent a cable for a laptop. No cold meats/salmon/cheese selection( despite the fact it is listed on the menu) for breakfast. One slice of toast each with hot breakfast. Dirty glasses at breakfast. Staff not overly helpful.
Review 72:Nice grounds. Lots of parking.
Review 73:The room was a horrible the bed was very small the carpet was discussingdirty there was no tea/coffee in the room the wall was patched upthe sofa in the room should be in a skip. I could go on.
Review 74:The lobby was nicely finished but that's where it ended..
Review 75:No real internet connection . They don't have WiFi in the rooms, you need to hire a cable for 20 euros and the quality in the public areas is woeful.
Review 76:The quality of the food and the chef's ability to present superb food is praiseworthy.
Review 77:I really enjoyed my stay at the County Arms Hotel, the rooms are big and spacious, the beds are so comfortable, and the staff are so nice and friendly! The receptionist "Roz" could not have been more helpful offering to send water to our rooms, always having a smile or friendly comment whenever we passed reception, always checking that everything was alright and passed a pack of tissues to myself "mother of the groom" when we were leaving for the church. As the old saying goes "It's the little things that count" . The bar staff were very friendly with a bit of eye candy for the ladies ;-)
Review 78:Fridge at wedding wasn't working when my friend got me a bottle of budwiser. It was totally warm and no bud on draft. I asked the the bar man for glass of wine he said it was warm, told me to get a glass of the wine the wedding people were handing out free. I had to ask for my money back to go get a bottle from the bar.
Review 79:The hotel is in a good location, set in nice grounds, plenty of parking on site. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful . Room was a good size, nicely decorated and very clean. The buffet breakfast was good, with well cooked hot options. The bar was nice, with a fair selection of meal/snack choices. The leisure centre is great, and we made good use of the facilities there.
Review 80:Rooms were a little rundown and some areas of the hotel looked like they were nice at one time, but were now in need of a renovation.
Review 81:Lobby area, bar and pool was well decorated and maintained . The staff were very nice and accommodating.
Review 82:The tv wasn't easy to use, so we didn't use it. Otherwise, notmuch to dislike.
Review 83:Our initial impression was very good, with a proper Irish welcome fromRamona. We were given one room, which we looked at, & decided weneeded a bigger bed to accommodate the fact that Mrs k had her righthand in a cast, & I would be in danger of getting clouted in asmaller one! There was no problem with switching rooms, & we hadacres of space. We made use of the pool & Jacuzzi, & booked forsome treatments next day. We ate in the hotel that night, & whilstthere was nothing wrong with the food, we felt that there was littleatmosphere, & the mood was sombre. Next day, after a good walkaround the Castle grounds, we had our treatments - a good back massagefor me, which got a lot of knots out - & felt the better for it.Reasonable price, too. Breakfast was taken in a large restaurant, againwith just a few present, but the staff were friendly, & the foodgood. We were not disturbed by any extraneous noise in the night.Parking was easy, & we'd certainly go back to the County Armsif/when we return to the charming little town of Birr.
Review 84:A group of friends and family stayed here the night before our wedding in Kinnitty Castle. It was perfect. We had booked dinner for 16 and we were given a private dining room. The group stayed in a range of room types - double, triple and suite and all were happy with their experience. The pool facilities were also good. Staff could not have done more for us that evening or the morning after. They were very friendly and helpful with everything.
Review 85:nothing i didn't like about this hotel
Review 86:On arrival the staff were really friendly and although they were very busy with coach tours arriving, they made every effort to welcome us and make us feel we were every bit as important as the coach load. The room was beautiful, warm, clean and very modern. Food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. My business was in Roscrea and the hotel is only 15 min drive away-very central
Review 87:Too many functions running at the same time at the weekend meant there was a lot of noise, very crowded, and o room in the one bar area that the hotel has.
Review 88:Location. Staff. Pool area. Food.
Review 89:nothing to report!!
Review 90:This is our 5th time to stay in the County Arms and we have had a very enjoyable experience each time. The staff are wonderful and nothing is a problem. Its lovely to see some of the same faces year after year, It says something that staff are still there.
Review 91:Dining room and bar staff left a lot to be desired, I put that down to insufficient training. At breakfast I had to ask staff for tea, could I place my order, etc. The staff were not very attentive and were more inclined to keep tables set rather than look after the few customers they did have! In the bar I asked for red wine... and was given a glass of red wine, no explanation of what grape variety was available and just landed with a glass of red. Dinner in the dining room was met with lots of clattering as staff set up tables for the following mornings breakfast, not exactly the ambiance you're after during an evening meal! I was really looking forward to having a bath when I checked in, unfortunately there was no bath in my room which can't really be helped, just unfortunate. I really don't think it is a lot to ask to provide a bottle of water in the rooms, buy them in bulk and they only cost a few cents - a vending machine in the hall offering water for €2 is a bit cheeky. Complimentary water would go down very well with guests. Coffee at breakfast was not good. Again, its things like good coffee that make stays enjoyable for guests. My colleague commented on the 'meagre' irish breakfast, 1 sausage and 1 piece of bacon did seem a bit mean on reflection.
Review 92:The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was good quality food. As it wasn't a hot buffet on display, it felt like your breakfast was freshly made in the kitchen. The array of items on the continental breakfast was good but unfortunately some items were not available on the second morning of my stay. The brunette (pregnant) receptionist was to be commended. Very capable, friendly, and good at her job.
Review 93:We arrived on a busy day and the staff were obviously too stretched, and we felt a little neglected during our evening meal. We ate out for the other two nights of our stay.
Review 94:Swimming pool and spa, good sized family rooms, wide selection of breakfast foods. My son complained that there weren't any chocolate croissants left on the first morning of our stay so one of the waitresses saved him a plateful on the second morning, he was over the moon.
Review 95:nothing
Review 96:The whole experience was exactly what was required for a relaxing short break . the realxed atmosphere added to the occasion. The staff was friendly and efficient
Review 97:Dinner was of poor quality and the waitress did not seem to like her profession. I would recommend to go to town to eat.
Review 98:Easy to find friendly staff and nice and big rooms.
Review 99:Poor coffee at breakfast but was rectified on request.
Review 100:Food Excellent Beds Comfortable Parking Excellent Easy to Find Pool & Leisure Centre Excellent Staff Excellent and very helpful
Review 101:need aircon on in the reception room on summer evenings.
Review 102:staff were very helpful and polite. family wedding-food and reception were excellent, venue was beautifully decorated. The only drawback was no aircon so the reception room was too hot.
Review 103:No hot water the next morning after a wedding. Very annoying and frustrating
Review 104:Wasn''t too impressed with rashers served with breakfast - looked very unappetising - however poached eggs were very good
