Reviews for Grand Hotel Elba International

Review 1:The hotel is well suited for holiday makers who want to spend most of their time at the beach, but it is situated at the end of a long and difficult winding road - and we were there mainly for the Napoleon thing.

Review 2:The restaurant was magnificent

Review 3:Location was very good with good facilities and lift to the beach, saving 100's of steps!! Fantastic pool facility and very good breakfast selection!

Review 4:Breakfast was so so,not poor choice for 4 star hotel, awful coffee. In general, hotel already needs a good renovation. A lift to the beach is like from horror movies, last century or worse, very untidy area, very badly kept beach, didn't want to stay there even for a minute.

Review 5:Great views from the room and pool area as well as bar on the 4th floor. Friendly staff, helped with everything with a smile. Spacious parking area. Room was clean with nice balcony, comfortable for 3 adults. Nice restaurants in a small town Capoliveri just few min drive from hotel.

Review 6:To receive better "concierge" service in helping with suggestions on what to see on Elba Island. Maybe give the guest a map, so they know where things are located.

Review 7:Front Desk Staff, especially Valerio. He went above and beyond by making a call for us to a shipper as we were expecting a package. He translated for us and requested documents be sent to the hotel's email address. He was great!

Review 8:Location is on a one way system so annoying when driving around.

Review 9:Make sure you book a seaview as the rooms at the back are very dark. But if you are lucky enough to get a first floor room it has a little private garden! The 2 seawater pools are fantastic and have wonderful views over the bay and across to mainland Italy.

Review 10:1. The hotel lady attitude is bad! When we checkout, we asked the hotel lady to make an order for a taxi, at the beginning, She was nice and made the call to the driver, but we waited for one hour and no taxi came! And called back to the hotel,to make sure if the car coming or not, or how can we catch him, the old lady lost the patience at all, Just told us the driver came again and don't call them back at all! And hung off the call badly! It's really not a way of 4/5 star hotel! No taxi from the hotel was coming at all! At wasted our time for catching the ferry! The bad attitude It's really destroy the feeling for the vacation! And talk to the other taxi who took us back to the port, he said the hotel just cooperated with the taxi from port azzuro, so it's not the closed one, and maybe also they just don't wanna come, because it's cheap, and that's Sunday! 2.the sevice They said it's possible to make the order for the breakfast in the room, and the price was no sign on the list, also the snacks and drinks in the room( they put drinks together but the water was free). no price was on the list, but was charged later. 3. The traffic It's good position with a good view, but the public traffic is bad, no shuttle bus, just a boat taxi to Porto azzuro. Too far from the main port from Piombino. if you don't have a car, maybe it's not a good choice. Because the bus is also not convenient, have to wait for the bus for long time and transfer 2 times to arrive the hotel. Too much mountain road on the way, we also got car sick. And the text charged a lot!

Review 11:The view is nice from the hotel, Very good breakfast, and nice private beach, also the swimming pool!

Review 12:The breakfast coffee wasn't very good. I suggest ordering a special coffee (rather than a general pot).

Review 13:The hotel was extremely friendly and comfortable, beach access was excellent, the beach area wasn't overly crowded, the breakfast was huge and diverse-- something to satisfy everyone. They offer a room for you to shower and change in so you can continue to use the facilities after check out.

Review 14:Air conditioning not good enough. It was working all the time and still kind of warm inside the room. Breakfast could be improved by adding vegetables (at least 1-2 kinds) which were totally absent. Otherwise breakfast was very rich in cereals, meats, cheese, sweeats...but not one vegetable.

Review 15:Private nice beach. Helpful staff. Nice view.

Review 16:Nothing

Review 17:This hotel has the wow factor. Great views. Great food. Have dinner there. It's a 5course feast for 30euros! Go out of school holidays if you don't like kids. This is a place the Italiens go and they live their kids. Very well behaved kids

Review 18:It was a beautiful location with easy boat access to Porto Azzurro. Lovely private beach with free use of kayak. Beautiful pool area and an incredible view. Front desk staff were very helpful. Within walking distance of waterside restaurants.

Review 19:Restaurant staff could improve. Bad coffee. Saltwater pools but no options with the water supply. Beds could be better.

Review 20:Nice clean hotel. Private beach super. Nice food and friendly reception.

Review 21:The facilities look like a dorm hall from the 60's and I don't think that is consistent with a 4 star rating

Review 22:The location was amazing with incredible views

Review 23:This is not a good location unless you have a car!

Review 24:The scenery, the swimming in the ocean and the pools, the water taxi, Porto Azzuro, the market, the shopping, and the hotel breakfast buffet.

Review 25:We arrived at the hotel expecting to be greeted (considering we paid a lot to stay here for the week) but the staff were quite disinterested. Usually at 4* hotels they are happy top help, offer you lots of information when you check in but the staff at this hotel didn't offer much at all. One night we decided to get a taxi (arranged by the hotel) to a town for dinner, however the taxi was 30 minutes late and the staff seemed very disinterested in the fact that the taxi hand't turned up. The room was clean and the view was lovely however the hotel and room were dated and the general appearance of the hotel from the outside was poor. If you want to get anywhere you either need to drive, pay a lot for a taxi or pay a lot for the water boat to the local port. The taxi boat was fun however the first time we ordered it, it didn't turn up and the staff didn't apologise. Lunch is available from the private beach and closes at 3pm. We turned up a few minutes after 3 and they turned us away, instead of trying to help. Overall, for what we paid we did not feel that we got the value compared to other hotels in the same price bracket.

Review 26:The views from the hotel are fabulous and the hotel sits in its own quiet area away from anything. Elba is a beautiful island so you can't really go wrong with location. The private beach is nice and has a lift going down to it which is very useful and very pretty, looking out onto Port Azzuro.

Review 27:We chose a junior suite with a sea view and spent 11 days at the Grand Elba. We experienced poor weather during 4 of those days and that's where the total lack of activities for children was evident. The internet wifi reception is virtually non existent and they have this infuriating policy of having to log back onto the wifi every 15 minutes! Breakfast was bland bland bland. The hotel is perched high on a hill with its own private beach. There is a flight of around 220 precarious steps down to the beach and their lift to the beach was out of order for some time with nobody apparently working to repair it. Coming back up you have to call reception who send a mini van for 4 people, not great when there was a queue, otherwise it's a long climb! The beach itself was pleasant enough with two decked areas suspended over the sea to the left and right with a very small section of sandy beach. Probably due to the lift being out of action not many people ventured all the way down so we had ample space. The bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable and resulted in a lot of back and neck pain. The look and feed of the hotel is very old and dated. It is 40 years old and desperately needs a proper renovation. The staff could be friendlier and do not seem to be a very happy bunch. Due to the isolated nature of the location you really should have a car to drive around. 11 days here was way too long. 5 would have been enough

Review 28:The view from our junior suite over the bay of Porto Azzuro was great. As was the view from the swimming pool area. The beach was deserted so we had it mostly to ourselves. There were several nice restaurants a short drive away and the rooftop bar makes very nice cocktails with a great view.

Review 29:The hotel is relatively quiet so in evenings you may prefer to go to the lively Porto Azzuro seafront & town area but there is a one way lengthy taxi ride to get there. There is a water taxi as an alternative. Rooms with sea views are worth the extra cost.

Review 30:The views from the rooms and from the pools were outstanding with sea view to Italy, view of the bay and Porto Azzurro and round to the mountains to the west. Also the view from private sea edge boardwalk sun bed area was stunning.

Review 31:The whole hotel is in a desperate need of a renovation. It would also help if all of the staff knew some basic english.

Review 32:Great view and a nice beach area down by the ocean.

Review 33:Elevator to the beach "temporary" out of order although shuttle service aavalable

Review 34:Location excellent. Hotel frommel outsider à bit dated. Rooms well refurbished. Very good swimmingpool area.

Review 35:Friendliness of staff

Review 36:Not a lot. Hard beds, but they gave us extra pillows to help.

Review 37:Fantastic location. Lovely beach area. Great views. We loved our stay here.

Review 38:Dinner menu.

Review 39:The room given. Location

Review 40:Noicy aircondition !!!! Awkward wi-fi connection ...

Review 41:Very relaxed. Friendly and helpfull staff !!! Nice beach area !!

Review 42:The salt water pool was disappointing.

Review 43:Location to the beach, room view, Elba Island, good choice of food

Review 44:Coffee service too slow at breakfast.

Review 45:Great facilities in lovely location.

Review 46:Very slow wifi and internet access

Review 47:Great views from the room towards the sea side, very helpful & friendly staff

Review 48:Hold Building Bathroom to small

Review 49:Position Good Staff

Review 50:very comfortable hotel with first class amenities. pool and restaurant superb with great views.

Review 51:a liitle bit older furniture

Review 52:view brekfast beach

Review 53:Breakfast is poor

Review 54:Did not get sea view from the room, but paied probably not for that either....

Review 55:Generally very nice hotel

Review 56:According to Booking, the credit card I used to make the reservationwas just to hold the reservation and that the credit card would not becharged. I should be able to pay when I check out. Somehow when I wasready to check out, I then found out the credit card I madereservation with was already charged. And that I could not use myother credit card to pay. Usually that is the one I pay so Iwouldn't incur foreign transaction fee. When I questioned thefront desk, they told me the reason my first credit card was chargedwas because the room was non refundable. I don't think this isright. I was charged 2% of the room charge for foreign transactionfees. This is to my great dismay.. Either Booking is misleading or thehotel! I was not happy about it at all.

Review 57:The breakfast was wonderful, especially the big open bright dinning arealooking out the bay and the beautiful spring air and sunshine, it isjust wonderful.

Review 58:personally, the meal we had at this hotel in the evening was virtually inedible

Review 59:love the location although a little remote, rooms clean and comfortable, staff friendly and helpful, breakfast plentiful and varied

Review 60:The rooms, the service, that they stated it was 4 stars but it wasn't, the noises where bad, we had to move rooms from the noises, the rooms smell, no carpet, very cold and the staff not helpful

Review 61:The elevator to the beach

Review 62:Evening dinner hit and miss. Still worth having the odd meal at the hotel but so easy to go to any number of great eating places in local towns and port its not essential.

Review 63:Excellent hotel with private beach, multiple bars, pools. Stayed here 3 times now and will go back again.

Review 64:The hotel was ok, althought the 'grand' in its name could havebeen true maybe a decade ago. As my fellow travelers have mentionedhere, it would definitely need to be refurnished. The elevator is arelic, that it is described as panoramic must be a joke :) bathroom wasa horror, I have never seen a bathroom "door" replaced byfabric in a four star hotel. Breakfast was good. Altogether threestars. The beach was a minus, apart from the view, I did not like it atall. Also, if you like to spend your nights out of hotel, here youdefinitely need a car - no walking options, as far as I know. Internetconnection was poor.

Review 65:View, breakfast.

Review 66:I didn't expect seing the high prices as a fact having a lot of children families jumping around in the restaurant. It was a poor experince to dine there. They really should consider what the concept should be

Review 67:The staff were not very helpful. We tried to book a boat trip that was advertised in the hotel lobby and were bounced between the front desk and the beach attendant. Neither seemed to know anything or care about the business. We asked for help with transport to and from the hotel and none was really provided. The restaurant staff were also not very friendly. It was unclear what we were being charged for wine leaving us with the impression one night we were being over charged. In fact we weren't but some clarity would have prevented some negative feelings.

Review 68:The location was excellent with good beach and pool areas.

Review 69:Rooms overlooking fence and bushes. No real beaches near hotel. Not drinkable, salty tap water. No supply of fresh water!! The reception staff advised to purchase small bottle of mineral water for a few euros!! No undercover garages. Very uncomfartable beds. We would not recommend this hotel. It is not **** hotel.

Review 70:Relatively good breakfast

Review 71:Laundry and Dry cleaning expensive. Hotel would not supply an iron to the room to do own ironing. Bar drinks were very expensive, 100% mark up on normal prices.

Review 72:Staff were very helpful and spoke very good English. The room was well set up as requested with babycot, kettle babybottle warmer etc. Restaurant staff very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast. Fabulous views of sea from restaurant and sea view rooms. Nice rooftop terrace.

Review 73:Warning: jellyfish!!! Jellyfish!!! Jellyfish!!! You might not be able toswim at this hotel's 'beach' due to the many red poisonousjellyfish in its waters. Firstly, there is not a real beach in thishotel, it is basically a deck on top of the water. More importantly, onmy first day I asked one of the lifeguards how long had the jellyfishbeen there 2/4 days? He answered 'many more than that!' Andthey were there on my last/fourth day as well. The lifeguards alsostated that in the past years the frequency and the number of jellyfishhave increased. So be aware.ELBA IS VACATION WITH EFFORT...In order to enjoy a beach (since the one I paid for was unswimmable), I drove to other beaches (supposedly free of jellyfish). Take note that the 'best' ones like Fetovaia and Marina del Campo can be quite far (30-45 mins) due to traffic in some points and winding roads.  But then once I got to them I found out a few things :1) There is very limited parking near these beaches so you either pay a hefty fee to park nearer the water (€10 in Fetovaia), or walk a good bit (25 minutes, or over 1km on hot hilly asfalt) since you'd have to leave your car far out (e.g. Cavoli beach), or arrive/wake up very early in your vacation...;2) Once you get to the beach, they're often 'managed' and in most you cannot just put down your towel and get into the water. You have to 'reserve' a spot ( I had not) and which are often taken up in blocks by the closest hotels. I was in 'luck' at Fetovaia as there was one (for real) spot free for 'only' €23. The same thing happened in another beach only that someone took my spot between the time I spotted it and went to get my wallet in my car.

Review 74:View from room, but not much else, unfortunately as I was lookingforward to ome relaxing time on the beach.

Review 75:Very friendly staff, always helpful! Location is excellent and although the hotel is a bit old, it's well kept and really everything works well and all families we met had a good time there.

Review 76:Breakfast was not so good as expected.

Review 77:The view was marvelous. We enjoyed a lot the view toward Porto Azzurro. The "special bed" with the dedicated elevator was also very comfortable for us.

Review 78:Coincidental sports car rally made for a noisy weekend. When it ended quiet returned. Too many good restaurants on Elba to use hotel dining room. View rooms are on the same side of hotel as reception and driveway.

Review 79:View beautiful. Room comfortable balcony nice. Funicular to sea. Pool area very nice.

Review 80:Breakfast buffet is meager, and if you are late, not much is left. Forthe price class of the hotel, they should upgrade quality and quantityof the buffet.

Review 81:Location and ambiance are perfect. The view on the bay and Porto Azuurois breathtaking. The hotel is dated, but well maintained. The privatebeach with deckchairs and bar/restaurant are excellent, the watertaxi toPorto Azzuro a treat. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 82:Superior room did'nt quite match up to the photo on the web-site. Looked bigger on the web than it turned out to be.

Review 83:We had a great stay at the hotel. Location was ideal. View from the bedroom excellent. Private beach ideal. Loved the funicular and the large pool. The staff could not have beeen friendlier or more helpful. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and very good value. I will recommend the hotel to friends.

Review 84:If you didn' book half-board you were treated as a second-class client. At breakfast you could not choose were to sit and the best locationswith bay-view were reserved for hb-clients. We had to sit far back in acorner. The head-waiter was not friendly at all and didn't seem to care. The beach-bar was frightfully expensive. Overall a bit overrated.

Review 85:The location, bay-view, swimming-pools, private-beach was one of thebest in the area. The beach-elevator was practical, as was the taxi-boatto the harbour of Porto Azzurro.

Review 86:Friendly and service-minded staff

Review 87:Too many children, very bad wifi

Review 88:Very nice beach area by the sea, nice breakfast, good parkingfacilities,

Review 89:The beach was a bit rough for small children

Review 90:Fantastic staff, nice rooms and super food. We will definitely come back!

Review 91:I had expected more luxury for that price.

Review 92:The beach bar was serving really good food in a cosy atmosphere
