Reviews for Carlton Hotel Kinsale & Spa

Review 1:Lovely staff - very accommodating , warned us about slippy roads in the am and advised us not to leave. We later saw a number of accidents on the roads. Well done to all.

Review 2:when we check in girls were really nice but in the lobby bar, tall guy wasn t nice and he couldnt answer for our simple question about what they serve on dinner and till what time it is serve.

Review 3:Amazing room as on picture with nice view, room big and huge bad what we love, bathroom biga both with super shower and big bath worth that price. Breakfast could be better but when you order breakfast to room is more options to pick than in restaurant.

Review 4:Getting dressed lights went out told one of the staff went back to room later still no lights told another member of staff when I went back later ,lights working but the tall lamp removed a bit worrying obviously faulty (fire risk)

Review 5:The only thing was taxi cost us 12e single into kinsale. 3e each red bus on the way out which was fab!although i have to say at 7.30 that evening when we were coming back to hote in bus the driver was very unpleasant at the start. He proceeded to being nicer towards the end. This gentleman was of a foreign nationality!

Review 6:Everything was perfect!

Review 7:The hotel is in the process of changing hands since last February, however the website (nor the literature in the rooms) has not been updated with the new spa brochure or restaurant / bar menu, which was annoying as I like to plan ahead. The reception staff were friendly but some seemed very inexperienced and unable to deal with simple requests, such as helping us organise an early breakfast. The restaurant staff were very helpful but were very much under pressure at breakfast on Sunday- probably indicating problems higher up with staffing and management. Lastly, it wasn't clear on the TV how to rent movies. We could have asked at reception but never did in the end, so that's probably our fault. Still it makes sense to have that option available on the TV screen.

Review 8:Comfortable hotel. Ideal for a quiet get-away. Very little ambience however. Spa and leisure facilities were great and staff very helpful. Shuttle service to and from Kinsale is very handy. Free wifi throughout the hotel was great, however wasn't fast enough to support netflix on my laptop. Overall, had a very relaxing stay.

Review 9:The freedom to enjoy my mini break. All staff pleasant & nothing too much trouble. My room had a stunning view & the the choice of breakfast was varied & delicious.

Review 10:Staff were polite but not very engaging even on checkout no one asked if stay was satisfactory felt like they just wanted bill paid no Sunday papers nearest shop a 10 min drive

Review 11:Room lovely bar food excellent very nice breakfast and good leisure facilities

Review 12:Although our bedroom was nicely located and good size the bathroom is a let down. urine smell and the tiles are not clean. We had to use the pool shower because I was not comfortable to use our room shower.

Review 13:Pool and place itself.

Review 14:Cannot say anything negative about the Carlton. I suppose a car is necessary really, though the hotel provide a bus (at a small cost), but as we had a car we didnt need this service.

Review 15:Staff at check in very pleasant, the setting is beautiful, its nice and quiet. Facilities are top class

Review 16:Upscale hotel in a secluded natural setting that was very relaxing. Large, well appointed rooms, excellent breakfast, and friendly staff made our visit very pleasurable. The pool and spa were a plus.

Review 17:The only one thing we didn't like was the fact that our double bed was actually two single beds put together. It was really uncomfortable in the middle. Apart from that I would have no complaints at all...

Review 18:Staff were all lovely. .. very helpful. Room was lovely. Breakfast was great!

Review 19:Nothing to do at hotel , spa has no vitality area, bar no atmosphere, not enough irish working there no character. Hotel has potential to be so much more.

Review 20:Excellant location with great views . Rooms modern and clean .

Review 21:We were on the ground floor and when cleaning, our patio door which lead straight outside the hotel was left open by the cleaner. The vegetarian option in the restaurant (which was booked out) was just that, a single option - which when the chef was asked, he/she would not deviate from the card.

Review 22:The staff were generally very nice, they went out of their way on my than one occasion to make us feel comfortable. Breakfast was nice and fresh with cereal/yogurt/fruit salad/juice/cold meat/pastries/fried stuff and good tea/coffee refilled at your table too! All in a nice sized dining room with a beautiful view. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, tea/coffee in room is always a nice feature.

Review 23:The bar area lacked atmosphere..& not enough dining room..

Review 24:The fantastic view of the bay from our bedroom window & leisurely walks around the hotel.

Review 25:hotel seemed understaffed resulting in slow service. had to ask twice for the extra bed we booked and 3 times for an extra towel. Dinner in restaurant was poor at best and highly overpriced. also took the best part of an hour to arrive!

Review 26:Beautiful setting

Review 27:Food in main restaurant was very poor - ordered rib-eye steak with red wine jus - the jus was inedible with a burnt taste & very unpleasant flavour. The steak dry without jus. Complained to two waitresses who ignored complaint

Review 28:Bedroom was good with lovely views over bay

Review 29:Didn't like the way Manager in bar gave out to Marek in bar on Friday night, poor Managerial skills there, we as customers heard everything he said and it wasn't very nice.

Review 30:Dinner, pool and grounds were lovely

Review 31:Bar / restaurant - deco not very inviting despite the wonderful views. Foreign waiter told us he could not get us a snack as it was after 3pm - I called the Manager who was Irish & we were looked after immediately with great bar food.

Review 32:Very relaxed stay!

Review 33:You need a car to get there. It's a remote location. But is it a negative? Not at all.

Review 34:It's very new development, it has very high modern standards in room designs. Bathroom was pleasure to use with large bath tube and spacious shower. Large beds. Quiet. Fantastic food in hotel restaurant, everything we ate was delicious. Try locally brewed beer: Kinsale Pale Ale. Swimming pool with shallow part for children.

Review 35:Nothing to say.

Review 36:The hotel is very impressive as you arrive at the reception area with a beautiful view overlooking water and countryside. The hotel is modern and the beds were comfortable. There are lots of nice countryside pubs where you can enjoy a drink and nice meal.

Review 37:The staff at the front desk could be rather snooty at times. The restaurant and bar felt run down. The bar was a great option for dinner, as it had a nice casual menu, but the televisions are very disturbing (but what is a bar these days without a TV?)

Review 38:The driveway approach to the hotel is breathtaking and starts the experience very well. The views from the hotel is stunning and the rooms are a really good size. The cleaning staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 39:Room, wall paper coming off walls. Upholstery on chair and footstool stained

Review 40:Leisure centre but on our first evening it was very over crowded with children

Review 41:We had a triple room even though we booked a double room It was very cramped. The chairs needed cleaning The bath was very high and difficult to get into it

Review 42:The breakfast was brilliant and the view

Review 43:It is a littel bit out from Kisnlae but there is a shuttle bus so I guess I cant complain really,

Review 44:Lovely hotel in beautul setting. Staff very friendly & helpful. I had a wonderfual massage & facil wiht an excellent therapist which was amazing.

Review 45:For a 4 star hotel the bed was very small, no mini bar and no safe, room could do with a makeover

Review 46:Hotel location beautiful views, spa and swimming pool. Courtney bus into kinsale town €3 pp

Review 47:Bar prices were on a par with any hotel. Food choice was not very extensive but I'd sooner have a few good quality options than many mediocre ones.

Review 48:Staff were all very friendly and attentive, at reception, in the bar and restaurant. Location is fabulous, overlooking Oysterhaven, very close to Kinsale and even a shuttle bus (€3 each way per person during the evenings) to get into Kinsale. Everywhere looked clean and tidy and plenty of space to relax or wander about. Food quality at dinner and breakfast was very good.

Review 49:The view was spectacular. The hotel provided (for a small fee) a round trip mini bus ride into Kinsale. Since parking is limited in town this provided an easy, carefree night.

Review 50:Even though it was fairly full, we found the Carlton to be quiet and relaxing which is what we were looking for. Rooms are away from the leisure centre and bar/restaraunt area.

Review 51:The restaurant food was awful and over priced one of the staff members that was initially waiting in our table was one of the worst we have ever come across very rude and decided to leave our table after giving out the wrong order my father had to eat his dinner on his own as he was served his steak 20 minutes before us - we waited over an hour for our dinners

Review 52:Hotel was lovely

Review 53:The staff were exceptionally kind. They gave us tips as to where to go site seeing and eating. Very friendly and in a beautiful location. Two thumbs up.

Review 54:it would have been great if the spacious grounds had some walks to enjoy the outdoors. The location was quite remote from the township.

Review 55:The staff were very helpful, and the rooms were spacious. It was great to be able to have a snack, meal or bar easily on site.

Review 56:My only criticism is that the menu wasn't changed or rotated. However most guests only stay a few days as they are touring, but we stayed for 9 nights. The actual food itself was of excellent quality.

Review 57:The location is superb, and the views are breath taking. The staff were so helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them.

Review 58:Rashers and sausages tasteless

Review 59:Leasure center a dream spotless bed luxurious very peaceful and quiet courtesy bus and driver excellent and so chatty a great service

Review 60:distance from kinsale. receptionist upon leaving not friendly - almost machine like when talking - the opposite to the lovely girl that greeted us the day previous. rooms way over priced nearly 200 euro for one night with bay view. the room could do with a paint aswell.

Review 61:receptionist on arrival was lovely

Review 62:I was kept awake until past 3 00 am with a wedding party. I my opinion when they have a wedding there should be no other guests, it is totally unfair, I have stayed twice and both times there was a wedding , will not stay again.

Review 63:I love it's situation , thinking it would be peaceful

Review 64:The room with the view! Location. Facilities such as pool. Comfy , king bed. Lovely bathroom. Extra milk brought straight up when requested. Good breakfast variety.

Review 65:Bed was to hard and mattress toppers were not available. The wallpaper and some of the furniture in the bedroom needs replacing. Cracked tile in bathroom.

Review 66:Staff were fantastic. Food was great. Hotel setting.

Review 67:Tired and worn out hotel, furniture is way past its useful life. We booked superior (deluxe) double, and were shown 2 rooms after complaining, but all are the same. Very dirty and worn out double bed, that was very narrow, could almost qualify for double, chipped bathroom, and disgusting dirty chairs to top it all off. Food was terrible standard and restaurant worn out and dirty. Plastic flowers all around. You have been warned. to be avoided at all cost. please see photos.

Review 68:nothing to like. so far away from the main centre and any activities.

Review 69:Steak in the main restaurant was not cooked to my liking, twice. Presentation was beautiful, execution let them down. Mattress was too soft, squeaky and needed replacement.

Review 70:Lovely location, friendly staff and nice spa pool and gym. Bar food highly recommended.

Review 71:I feel the room facilities and breakfast are fairly average, I would have expected more for the price.

Review 72:Marvellous location with lovely views, though you need a car to get into Kinsale or explore the area. My room had a full-size bath as well as a separate shower. Friendly staff.

Review 73:Our room wasn't ready for us when we arrived at 4pm in the afternoon after a long journey. No comfortable quiet areas to sit. Bar very dark.

Review 74:The location was good. Beautiful views.

Review 75:Due to a mistake on the hotels part we were left waiting on a room for 45 minutes, instead of a double room which we paid for we got two single beds joined together. The next morning having been greeted by painting equipment outside our door, two painters walked unannounced into the room as we were getting ready, very unpleasant given that we had booked an early weeknight stay and felt we could have been dealt with much better given the circumstances and the expense we had paid for the room.

Review 76:The food was amazing and the wait staff were fantastic, the views were exceptional.

Review 77:Could NOT check in until 17.00 and poor customer service ~ the staff couldn't care less Breakfast was ordinary ! poor enough for a Hotel of this class

Review 78:Location, Family room

Review 79:Our double room had 2 beds pushed together, very noisy early morning due to deliveries at front door.

Review 80:Leisure centre lovely, food quite good, grounds lovely.

Review 81:There is weak signal for phones once you leave the reception. Its barely there once you are in your room.

Review 82:The food was excellent and the staff were very polite

Review 83:I would highly recommend this hotel. Excellent accommodation, food and leisure facilities. The staff were very friendly. Beautiful views of Kinsale. Very enjoyable stay.

Review 84:Too far outside of town and roads not safe to walk on,not hotels fault. Never had to sign up to bit buzz before so I didn't bother, mobile phone and Internet was poor. I was charged €5 for coffee while we waited for our room to be ready thought that was a bit mean.

Review 85:Facilities,pool,etc were very good .

Review 86:Carpet was stained and wet at side of the bed, TV was not working. It took 3 hours to resolve the issues and several trips up and down to reception. In fairness the hotel agreed to give me a discount as I was paying premium rates for 2 rooms.

Review 87:The view

Review 88:The room 206 was very dissappointing. The furniture and carpet was stained. The bed was very small and not over comfortable and I got a bite from something while in the bed.

Review 89:Location, staff and breakfast

Review 90:I did not like that the first room I checked in to was dirty & TV not working. It took 3 hours before I was sorted & I was late for a dinner reservation. It stressed me out. It took a long time for this to be reflected in the bill. I was paying premium rates for terrible service

Review 91:View

Review 92:I didn't really have a bad stay but the hotel was quite worn in areas there was very little choice in the fruits department he you didn't have a fry. The fry was also precooked , not what I would have expected from a hotel of this rating.

Review 93:Location was great staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 94:Bar food on the first evening of our stay was disappointing although to be fair we had lunch there the next day and it was good. Bar staff very polite and friendly both times. Perhaps we were just unlucky !

Review 95:Friendly staff on arrival and at all times.Beautiful view from room. All facilities included.Leisure centre very good and swimming pool and jacuzzi much appreciated.

Review 96:The shuttle bus service into Kinsale was very convenient especially with young kids. The hotel just need to make it clearer that there is a charge for this.

Review 97:Outside patio was filthy. Worst bed I have ever slept in, I was very sore the following morning. Don't think I would stay there again.

Review 98:Staff were very nice, helpful

Review 99:Fab hotel friendly helpful staff beautiful comfy spacious room - spotless. The jacuzzi and steam room were gorgeous, the hotel is in such a beautiful serene setting breakfast was lovely loads of options and so tasty - great value will defo be back

Review 100:Very very disappointed that rooms did not have fridge, safe or water. These are standard in every hotel i have stayed in, in recent years. For the price we paid, it is disgraceful.

Review 101:The staff were very helpful and friendly. The shuttle bus into Kinsale in the evening was a real bonus and allowed us to dine and enjoy a glass of wine in comfort, without worrying about driving. Kinsale was very busy during our stay in June.

Review 102:Very rude receptionist. The room and corridor were shabby. The room was extremely overpriced at €220 for one nights b&b. It was a basic room, small with a nice view.

Review 103:The location of the hotel and views are amazing. Food was very nice.

Review 104:Although out of town, the hotel supplies a courtesy bus on a regular basis. The hotel is lovely with beautiful views. We had a lovely evening and dinner in Kinsale, then called for the bus to head back to bed in a quiet ,serene room.

Review 105:Breakfast was basic. Cloths used to clean tables were grey discoloured and were used on every table and never rinsed out in. Water or any cleaners. Tables were sticky and not clean

Review 106:The breakfast was dried up , and we where down for b/f at 9.30, staff had no routine all doing the same think and getting no where,

Review 107:Loved the spa, views from hotel, shuttle bus to bring us into the town,

Review 108:Receptionist was not helpful, started to serve another customer while in the middle of checking us out. We had to wait until she finished dealing with the other customer until she would continue to deal with us even though she was serving us first. Bed was not comfortable and couldn't get wifi in the room.

Review 109:The hotel facilities were top notch. A great value for the price. Thegrounds are beautiful. The hotel is a bit far from the city center, butthere was a shuttle that took us into town for a very reasonable fee andthen picked us up after dinner. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 110:Terrible breakfast and insufficient staff for evening dinner that some guests were turned away although many empty tables, especially when hotel is so far out from town!

Review 111:Food good for dinner

Review 112:on my arrival they could not find my booking for 1 night with breakfast. The following morning at breakfast 2 members of staff told me my breakfast was not included as well as a supervisor. Eventually the supervisor came back to me and confirmed that it was included. It was very embarrassing and totally out of order.

Review 113:All was grand!

Review 114:Excellent staff and accommodations. Our group was well taken care of from the time of check in, where the desk staff arranged transport in to Kinsale and set reservations at a terrific restaurant (Blue Haven). The rooms were beautifully appointed and very comfortable. Of our group of 11, every person agreed we would be pleased to stay at The Carlton again. Sunrise was spectacular.

Review 115:Noisy Room - because of connecting door. Bar Food choices were limited and pretentious ie square(?) piece of fish served on a board! and pricey; with very odd choice of salad ingredients and un-cooked peas.

Review 116:Pool and Breakfast (staff in both locations were best in Hotel; approachable and friendly.)

Review 117:We did not find anything we didn't like.

Review 118:We liked the exception class of professional staff members as well as the eligant style of the hotel grounds. From the outside we loved the landscaping and waterfall. The veiw from the rear veranda was spectacular!

Review 119:Breakfast is bog standard and pre-cooked. Pillows are like planks and when we were given requested feather pillows they were far from comfortable. The bar area is badly designed with restricted natural light and grimy seating. Decoration throughout was bland although the entry lobby is impressive. Thank goodness Kinsale does not lack first class restaurants, but that's why we chose there. Without them, what was a pleasant anniversary break might have turned into a disappointing and overpriced trip. Badly in need of a major upgrade but this, we understand, may be under way shortly.

Review 120:Excellent staff who were friendly and helpful. Also, suspect we had a complimentary upgrade to a river / sea view room thanks to the trip being for a major anniversary. Room was clean. Hotel's shuttle bus to and from town centre is very useful at night.

Review 121:Room quality was great, facilities also great, particularly the pool & spa. Food (breakfast) was good but not great, choices and service options could be improved.

Review 122:The fact that the pool was full of kids at 4.30pm (including swim lanes) and we were advised to return at 7pm. changing room was bedlam with kids whacking into me on 3 occassions while playing tag. Would have been courteous of the staff to inform us that a private function was taking place in the bar as we had returned from Kinsale at 9.45pm in order to have drinks at the bar. We could not get in as it was 'standing room only' and birthday speaches and presentations were taking place. A very disappointing evening of having to take drinks back to our room. Had we known then we could have stayed in Kinsale for drinks.

Review 123:Clean room. Friendly staff. Pleasant breakfast.

Review 124:The fact that there was a private party on in the public bar - myself and my 2 daughters felt like we were intruding so left and went to bed early! The breakfast - maybe powdered egg was used as the scrambled egg were disgusting - the staff were not very friendly during this time!

Review 125:The leisure centre The Spa The bedroom

Review 126:3 miles outside Kinsale so a bit of a trek to get there Nothing special about the rooms although quite adequate although there was no bath in our room Restaurant staff first class but the food was mediocre

Review 127:The hotel is beautifully situated overlooking the estuary Very friendly and helpful staff Impressive foyer and public areas

Review 128:Everything, frim start to finish our experience was phenomenal. The hotel is beautifully set and the staff even though were extremely busy were welcoming, friendly and professional. 5 star rating.

Review 129:The air con in our room wouldn't work and was brought to the attention of staff. There was a burnt type mark on the carpet in our room. The website made it look like the beach was only a walk away which it's about 10-15 minute drive.

Review 130:The leisure centre was lovely with great facilities.
