Sextantio Albergo Diffuso

Sextantio Albergo Diffuso descritpion
Sextantio Albergo Diffuso offers unique accommodations in the fortified medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, deep in the Abruzzo hillside, at an altitude of 4,100 feet.
This spectacular hilltop village in the Gran Sasso National Park has been perfectly preserved. Rooms and junior suites are scattered in the original, period buildings.
You will find beautiful, simple décor, locally woven linens, 17th-century wooden ceilings, and ancient fireplaces. All this is combined with modern technology, including under-floor heating and remote-controlled lighting.
At the Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, the restaurant serves a great range of local recipes, all made using fresh food grown in the neighboring fields.
Outside the ancient walls, you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, from climbing and hang-gliding, to hiking and horseback riding. Famous ski slopes are also just a short drive away as are many interesting old towns and villages.

Reviews for Sextantio Albergo Diffuso
Review 1:The wooden entrance door of the 'room' (house) has open joints through which quite some cold enters. Luckily there is good floor heating...
Review 2:The real fireplace and the bathtub in the room create a sense of quality and wellness.
Review 3:poor standard of accommodation. restaurant long distance away from hotel. no nearbye parking facilities. restaurant menu very poor. hotel charges grossly overpriced.
Review 4:Noisy neighbours.
Review 5:Very atmospheric accommodation in carefully restored old buildings scattered throughout the village. Nice winebar and restaurant; both were good value. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly and efficient. Good location to explore the surrounding countryside.
Review 6:Average breakfast, could be better. It is also really out of the way so make sure you spend enough time there to make the drive worthwhile. Not many dinner options in the town and the hotel restaurant menu is extremely limited. The room is also really dark but I suppose that helps keep it authentic!
Review 7:A really special, unique stay...have never stayed anywhere like it before!!! The town is gorgeous and the room is very comfortable considering that they've tried to keep it in the medieval fashion. The bath in the room is definately the highlight of the room!!
Review 8:With the money paid the facilities of the hotel could have been better! The staff was smiling all the time! And I know it might sound silly but I have to type this unprofessional mistake they did by charging us 6 euros for two when we asked to taste before buying the Vino Cotto (cooked wine) in their little cafè like place, eventhough we saw afterwards that we had a bottle to try in the common hall we had with another room! Anyway that was a 'personal mistake' obviously!
Review 9:The location! The original medieval rooms that has a little touch of modern day! The local made soap and other cosmetics they put in the room! Amazing cool weather in mid July! Local food. The -easy to reach by car, ~5km- rock castle (Rocca Calascio) was amazing in sunset!
Review 10:This was a great experience with modern living. So special if you travel a lot and want the next level of your journey in Italy! Wonderful will always be a memory of a life time .
Review 11:Altough as mentioned there was a situation of emergency because of the snow I still find it unbelievable that no one helped with our luggages and I had to drag them for 45 minutes at night with 1 meter of snow and strong wind. Also we didn't get the room we booked for (that we really wanted) because apparently there were no free rooms but found out one of those rooms was free but given to someone arriving the next day. I understand this isn't the standard but I doubt I will be back after this treatment.
Review 12:The town is wonderful, we arrived after a snowstorm, It was really hard to get around but It have Santo Stefano an enchanted feeling. The girl at the restaurant was great, very nice and kind.
Review 13:Stairs are dangerous No door for toilet/WC
Review 14:Romantic ambiance big bathtub Big Bed Fireplace in the room Great artisanal breakfast Nice service
Review 15:I wasn't impressed with the toilet, which was behind a separation wall at the back of the bed, but then again, still better than having to do it in a hole in the freezing cold as they did in those times, no? Also the bed was rock hard, so not everyone's cup of tea, but I didn't mind for one night. It was part of the experience.
Review 16:A couple of hours from Rome, and yet a million miles away, back in time. The Albergo diffuso is a series of medieval properties turned into country-design rural chic retreats. More than a hotel, an experience.
Review 17:Our showers both did not drain properly and kind of flooded the bathrooms.
Review 18:Loved the place. The room was quiet and comfy with a lovely view from the window. The bed was surprisingly comfortable; excellent sleeping. The breakfasts were fabulous. We all enjoyed it very much.
Review 19:Unfriendly and inflexible check in staff Hard beds, a little too authentic. No help available with luggage when requested
Review 20:Very authentic, restoration amazing. Restaurant excellent, restaurant staff very professional and friendly
Review 21:Apart from the bathrooms the rooms lack basic comforts (not enough cushions!)
Review 22:The atmosphere and ambiance are unique and very special The staff were friendly and exceptionally helpful The cantina, restaurant and tea room
Review 23:The bed was cold and damp, water leaked into the window. It was rainy, and this Albergo does need a room with a log fire, drinks and cheer. I was brought up austerely and so I know about cold and damp, but this must be remedied in an otherwise brilliant idea.
Review 24:The village, setting, the people in the village. Incredible, unmissable landscape and views
Review 25:You will dislike this hotel if: - you want the standard hotel experience with room service, television, king sized beds and treadmills. - you are challenged by carrying suitcases up stairs or rolling them across cobblestones. (We decided to leave most of our luggage in our car and just carry what we needed to our room way up in a tower) - you get nervous driving on switchback roads.
Review 26:You will love it ths hotel if: - you like history and the idea of living in a medieval village - you have no difficulty climbing many stairs and walking on cobblestones - you have kids who are excited by castles - you have slept on a futon at one time in your life - you like meeting people who feel the same way
Review 27:The hotel seems as though it was designed to look good in photographs rather than to make the visitor's experience a perfect one. A shelf in the bathroom would have been good -- there were no flat surfaces, and therefore nowhere to put toiletries etc. Nowhere to take out one's contact lenses. The only light switch in the very dark bathroom was deep inside the room; hard to locate in the dark. Visitors should be warned that Abruzzo can be cold and wet, even in later summer; the rooms here can be cold and feel damp. There were not enough firelighters or kindling supplied to light the log fire. Having wifi only in 'public areas' is less than ideal in an albergo diffuso, where public areas have to be reached through pouring rain. Finally, the room rate is not very good value; we had to cancel a third night, because of travel plans, and found that the average price per night of a two-night stay was much higher than that for a three-night one. One of the two nights was charged at a rate of €250, which is far more than the accommodation is worth.
Review 28:The village of Santo Stefano is very beautiful, with a wide range of very scenic places to visit in the vicinity. Visitors should not miss Campo Imperatore. The nearby towns, esp. Castelmonte, are also very attractive. The hotel is doing great things for the village, and should be commended for that.
Review 29:In the room, rest room was not separated with bed. The sink was also in front of the bed. My wife felt unconfortable of them.
Review 30:The mood which was antique and made me feel like I am living in medieval age, and it was very comfortable. Restaurant was also good, too! At every breakfast and dinner time, the foods were very impressive and service was high-end, and table setting was amazingly wonderful!
Review 31:Santo Stefano is a must see destination. You feel like you are living 200 years ago in this village. Rocco Calascio is absolutely stunning and amazing place for a picnic lunch. Took the cooking class featuring local food preparation with Chef Simone which was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon. A bit pricey but it included our dinner (what we prepared) and wine which was really wonderful. Loved the taverna for pre or post dinner drinks.
Review 32:Place is not very suitable for (older) children (no activities) or elder people (steep stairs, no trolley for luggage). No chair or comfortable seats in the room (e.g. for reading a book)
Review 33:What a great location and view! Absolutely a great experience in a beautiful hotel. Helpful and friendly staff. Beautiful decorated rooms. Breakfast was great with local made products. Bring your walking shoes (nice walks the area)......
Review 34:We missed clasical music and more candles as it was in Matera
Review 35:Atmosphere
Review 36:Location , food and wine.
Review 37:location, symbiosis between the rustic location and the designer comfort, environment and quality consciousness
Review 38:the under floor heating was set way too high.
Review 39:we loved staying in a medieval castle
Review 40:The Mediebal experience an staff were very helpful
Review 41:Valuable experience to stay at completely preserved historical houses.
Review 42:il resto
Review 43:la genziana di benvenuto
Review 44:Location, very nice and dedicated staff, restaurant with good food and great service.
Review 45:The weather was cold and not on our side.
Review 46:The nature and surroundings were very beautiful.
Review 47:Beds
Review 48:Location, dining room, overall effect of restoration
Review 49:In one word...Awesome!
Review 50:The surrounding area of Sextantio is amazing. Great breakfast and restaurant in the evenings.
Review 51:Our sitting room was rather dark at uncomfortable but that was the nature of the place.bedroom was also dark but not so oppressive.
Review 52:Fantastic location and. very atmospheric. Brilliantly restored. Great to have log fire in bedroom and candlelight.
Review 53:Only one small thing - there were very few restaurants in the town, or bars to have coffee, run by locals, which would maybe have made the town feel more "real", and offered more choice for meals. However, this will hopefully grow in time. The place is so beautiful it's a great opportunity for local people to start something, & the area produces such wonderful produce for them to use.
Review 54:Loved the fact that this beautiful medieval village is being preserved so sensitively Accommodation was outstanding, immaculate room and bathroom, beautiful linen, great underfloor heating! Lovely views, excellent breakfast. Rooms very quiet and private, very tastefully decorated and each unique.
Review 55:We like the concept of the hotel, respect for the identity and the cultural heritage of the place. This is the way tourism should be. We loved the authenticity. Both dinner and breakfast were very good. We had a beautyful room with a fireplace and a bad. We enjoyed the village and its surroundings. It was a perfect stay.
Review 56:The hotel's restaurant was closed for dinner on the night we stayed, so we could not try the local cuisine that we were anticipating. The owner recommended another restaurant in the village, which had a good ambiance, but the food was mediocre.
Review 57:This was one of the most memorable hotels we have stayed in. We wish that we could have stuck with our original plan of staying there for 3 nights instead of having to cut short the stay to only 1 night due to other commitments. The rooms are actual houses in the village. They are rustic with modern amenities such as floor heating located discreetly so as to maintain the original decor, yet provide the creature comforts we have grown accustomed to. The large bathtub was the highlight. Due to our visit outside the main season, the occupancy was low. The owner upgraded us to a suite for free. The hotel tavern and breakfast was excellent too, rounding out a fabulous (albeit too short) stay.
Review 58:The restaurant belonging to the hotel was very a uninteresting restaurant - bad and heavy food not even good tasting - you could only choose between 2 menus of 4 courses the one more boring than the other and it took more than three and a half hour to get through the menu - we gave up ;o( There was only one servant to serve 34 guests, which was quite insufficient, she worked though all she could. Bad experience ;o(
Review 59:Very - very interesting place/town with a fantastic view to the mountains and with a fantastic room, nice and helpful staff.
Review 60:Its a one of a kind experience. The rooms take you back to another time, yet stylish and comfortable. Its set bang in the middle of the gran sasso national park. The nearby rocca di calascio is absolutely stunning at sunset, its surreal.
Review 61:Everything was really amazing. The experience of living in an environment that takes you years ago is awesome. The rooms has not even tv, however wifi connection in the room was excellent. Also, the room had not shower but only bathtub. It was great luck that we stayed there and we hope to had stay not only one but some more nights.
Review 62:Our room had low level background noise from some boiler, or electrical generator - not very disturbing, but there was no complete silence.
Review 63:Unique experience in medieval environment with enough comfort, good wireless reception
Review 64:Our entire stay was terrific. The staff were always accommodating and friendly. The step back in time was priceless and we recommend to anyone who appreciates the old architecture and living the old live for a while. The peace, quiet and serenity was spectacular.
Review 65:wonderful magical place! thiis special unique hotel is more than just a hotel. its an unusual experience as well as a fascinating preservation and restoration of a village, a culture and heritage. staying in a lovely restored medieval building with space age amenities. top that with the best breakfast in Abruzzo !
Review 66:extremely nice country site, good for walks in the mountians. The village is very peacefull, without too many tourists. Dinner, breakfast and room are scattered around the village, but close. All in typical old Italian style accomodations, which makes your stay unforgettable. Staff were very nice! A place we will certainly return too.
Review 67:The bed was much harder than I prefer.
Review 68:Location is wonderful. The staff was great. The room, while maintaining the charm of its historical context, has been updated with modern amenities including WIFI. Extremely relaxing location with lots of options for hiking, sightseeing, and so forth.
Review 69:Not just a hotel. Sextantio is a great experience! Came and left with tears in my eyes. Great that they do understand and show so well what toerism can be. Thank you very much!!
Review 70:Having to leave in the morning!
Review 71:The highlight of our trip. Amazingly clean and luxurious for a 15th century village. The kids felt like princesses and we felt like the king & queen. Truly memorable, even if expensive!
Review 72:There was only one restaurant in the village. We went there at evening and they told that we would need reservation. It would be nice if we would be informed in reception that we need reservation or they could order a table for us.
Review 73:We enjoyed the views and situation.
Review 74:The beds were not very comfortable. The staff confused myself and another guest as 1 booking as we arrived at the same time. My bathroom flooded into my bedroom which was a design flaw in my opinion due to poor drainage and I doubt this was the first time. The door to my room had a large gap in it enough for anyone to see everything within it also. Staff were helpful and removed my bags and gave me another room for the duration of my stay but to another room with no functioning bathroom light. The rooms are not suited to those with allergies as there s a lot of dust in the air due to the rustic nature of the rooms.
Review 75:The concept of the hotel is unique and so is the village it resides within
Review 76:The meal at the restaurant was not of quality. We had dinner there asthe menu looking interesting but sadly everything was pre cook andbefore serving the waitress just warm up our food. Definitely notItalian standard. Do not recommend eating there. Breakfast was the onlything good at the restaurant.
Review 77:There are many beautiful places in the world but none can offer youthis kind of experience which you can only find in Italy. This part ofItaly is fill with history and old medieval castle and this hotel islocated in one of this old castle. It is so well done that you ca afeeling of being back in ancient time but at the same time you have anew modern facilities. We had a huge room, 2floors. The main floor wasa living room with a small fireplace. The bedroom is located upstairsand it has a beautiful bath tub. No tv total peace and quite. Niceromantic getaway.
Review 78:unconsistent service. we had stayed at the sister property in matera where the service and staff were flawless and did notice a difference in santo stefano. we did on purpose reserve a room type with chimney and were assigned one without which was disappointing and we had to insist on a room change. also to find the way to the hotel is not easy (snow covering signs if any?)
Review 79:wonderful, unique location
Review 80:We enjoyed being in the mountain area! We felt like we were close to heaven being about the clouds. There is very little to do but we we happy to relax. The breakfast was very good. Dinner in the Cantina is limited. The food is not cooked but reheated.
Review 81:No complaints. Be aware that the rooms vary considerably. We were in "LaTravi" which is one of the rooms featured in their brochure - which wasgreat with the exception that it is above the Cantina where breakfast isserved and so can get a little noisy in the mornings depending on whoyour fellow travellers are - but we peeped into a couple of other roomswhich weren't as nice.
Review 82:Great experience staying in a medieval village! Hotel was comfortable, the food was excellent (especially in the Cantina) and the staff(especially Roberta and Tiziano) were great.
Review 83:Absolutely no remarks!
Review 84:The staff was extremely nice, the village is wonderful and the renovations were done in a classy and respectful way. Try the "cantinone" restaurant, also excellent!
Review 85:Autheniticity is all very well but I need a decent mirror for mycontact lenses and ours was awful. The tasting menu at the restaurant -good food but €50 with wine per head was overpriced for what itactually offered.
Review 86:Difficult to rate this hotel with conventional terms such as luxury orfacilities as the whole point of this place is that it doesn't offerthem - what it offers instead is a concept and an idea. The rooms (or atleast ours) was very basic yet had a charm and an individuality that wasvery unusual. There was a fantastic bath and a firm bed with good linen, and that was about it - however our 'cantina' was a wonderfulatmospheric room in a beautiful town in a fantastic location. And thebreakfasts were great served by a wonderful helpful lady.
Review 87:I was disappointed there weren't more shops closer to the rooms to buy local items like the soaps in the rooms or the linens. However, we did purchase some lovely cheese and salami from a shop around the corner from our room! (:
Review 88:We loved the location! The town of Santo Stefano Di Sessanio is absolutely beautiful!! The rustic feel of the town and the room was a very nice break from the daily grind. The drive to Campo Imperatore was pleasant too! Absolutely wonderful weekend!! Looking forward to going back!
Review 89:WOW!!! Having stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world this is the first truly authentic historic property we have found. The fireplace in our room took away the cold winter air (along with the quietly hidden in floor heating). No phone, no TV, candle light. A very comfortable bed in authentic medieval surroundings. The food was excellent and the service quiet elegance. Check with the hotel for local road conditions in winter, some roads can be closed due to snow.
Review 90:Amazing place in the Italian countryside, very romantic and rooms are one of a kind.Lovely food and drink with fantastic staff.
Review 91:Nothing
Review 92:Fantastic atmosphere and philosophy This is Avery special place
Review 93:Terrific hotel in fantastic location. Great philosophy. Will definitely come back.
Review 94:The interior design of the rooms and the location.
Review 95:This Albergo has been wonderfully restored, set in a delightful location. We had a fantastic couple of days.
Review 96:One of the best places we ever stayed! Everything was just Amazing! Also english-speaking staff, everything nice and clean.
Review 97:The food was great, but there was not a huge amount of choice.
Review 98:Location, isolation, romance, the view
Review 99:Uniquely located. One of a kind
Review 100:Bathrooms have no privacy. Hotel restaurant is terrible.
Review 101:Santo Stefano in Sessanio, decoration, views.
Review 102:The mountain setting, the breakfast room, the local restaurants and Gran Sasso National park - outstanding place!
Review 103:Food was basic but good restaurants nearby.
Review 104:Nice rooms, excellent location, good centre for walking.
Review 105:Location ...food
Review 106:nothing
Review 107:A unique hotel brought back from the edge of oblivion
Review 108:The bathroom had no door.
Review 109:Original furniture, rural atmosphere
Review 110:Fabulous location with amazing views. Helpful staff. Candlelit room to welcome us with medieval charm.
Review 111:Unique and romantic atmosphere in historical buildings. Perfect for relaxation.
Review 112:It was unbelievably beautiful!
Review 113:Really unique and nice place!
Review 114:stunning location ethos the key food design darkness quietness the fire candle lit rooms and streets
Review 115:As above
Review 116:Everything! A wonderful place. Only negative would be lack of a couch or resting/reading book area. Otherwise perfect. !
Review 117:Unique accommodation in a stunning location - a wonderful experience.
