Reviews for Hotel Pensione Moderna

Review 1:To close to the railway. A "has-been" hotel with a glorious past but less fancy today...

Review 2:Peaceful Ligurian Village. Parking. Value for money.

Review 3:Wi-fi was slow. Room was a bit too expensive.

Review 4:It is located in the centre of the town, but quiet, even despite the fact that it is close to the railway. Seaside is very close too (2 minutes by foot). Staff was nice and helpful.

Review 5:The train kept you awake all night. Breakfast was very average. It was disappointing as they said restaurant was open until end of September and it was closed when we were there with no excuse last week of September. The playground for children was overgrown.

Review 6:Staff

Review 7:The bed was quite uncomfortable and the walls were really thin. If someone was snoring in the next room you would hear it.

Review 8:Its a nice hotel with great breakfast. Staff is friendly and its located near the train station and beach.

Review 9:We expected a childs playground(poor) as we were travelling with 2 children and open restaurant.. The outside public areas need a lot of work to bring them up to an acceptable standard

Review 10:Trains were a bit noisy (admittedly not unexpected) but had to open balcony doors to let air in to room as it was a warm week. Great there was play equipment but it would be even better if it was cleaned. Eg Slide was covered in bird poo.

Review 11:Helpful staff and close to trains and cafes. The breaky was simple but quite fine.

Review 12:The train station is only 50 meters from the hotel, so you can hear every train, along the whole day and the night (if you have the window open). The breakfast was the "boring italian standard", with bread, ham, scrambled egg, cheese, müsli with joghurt, marmelades, and some sweet cakes. Coffee was terrible (machine with instant coffee and milk)... So they could develop on the breakfast definitely.

Review 13:The hotel is well located, only 5 minutes from the seaside. Small restaurants, bars in few minutes on foot. The hotel building has a nice old charme, rustic, french style. The service and the hotel personal was very friendly, they helped us in everything what we needed.

Review 14:Bonassola is probably the cosiest town in that area and Moderna is the best place to stay in Bonassola. Everything was excellent. Friendly staff. Good connections. Nice beach. Terrific views. Easy approach to Cinque Terre.

Review 15:Beautiful little Pensione in a fantastic setting, just a short walk to the beach. Near a train line so a bit on the noisy side but the positives far outweigh the negatives!

Review 16:No aircon but we survived with a fan during late July.

Review 17:Beautiful old deco style building, very clean and lovely host. Very close to the train station so very easy with luggage. Fantastic base for visiting the towns of Cinque Terre which are a 5 min train ride away.

Review 18:Perfect location for our needs during visit in Cinque Terre. 100 m from train station and 300 m from big, free beach. Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean and spacious room with air conditioning. Great breakfast on terrace. Free parking in the garden located at the street below the hotel.

Review 19:Because it is busy it can be noisy around 11pm~12 at times. Also the train station is right next to the hotel. Having said that I couldn't hear much from the second night on. So it isn't a "-". just something to be aware.

Review 20:The location is mind blowing so to offer accommodation in Bonassola is a bliss anyway. But the Hotel is a beautiful old building. Our room was cosy-lovely and calm. the breakfast peaceful and relax outside in the cool shade. Luigi was great and so was the rest of people in this establishment. Will do it again for sure. loved it and so did my partner and 9 years old daughter.

Review 21:Everything about this hotel was great especially the location, the helpful staff, the breakfast and evening meals, free bike hire and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We would definitely return to this hotel on our next overseas trip

Review 22:Be prepared to lug your luggage up stairs!!!

Review 23:Bonassola is a great alternative to staying at the 5terre. It is a very quaint town with easy access to the rest of the region. Great public beach.

Review 24:the only downside was the STAIRS!! but a very nice young man carried our suitcases up the 49 stairs!

Review 25:the staff were excellent and helped out with excellent suggestions about how to make the best use of our time in Cinque Terre. Also their knowledge of the train system made our onward journey much less stressful

Review 26:bed and pillows not comfy for me, gave me back pain, shower door to small to get in and out.. No english channels on tv but we were to tired to watch it anyway. Yes trains are on your doorstep, but we were to tired to notice the noise, and people who moan about the clock...come on its the charactor of the place.

Review 27:The spot was perfect as its away from the hussle and bussle of the other towns, lovely setting and staff. I think this is the nicest town to stay in of all the towns in the region, in that's its pretty, quiet and train is on your doorstep.

Review 28:Breakfast could have included fresh orange juice and fruit, and proper coffee (rather than a machine)

Review 29:The friendly relaxed feel of the hotel, the family-run atmosphere, the charm of the building and gardens, proximity to the beach, the quiet small town, very good food in the evening

Review 30:Nice staff, close to train station, wich also ment you often could hear the trains. Very special decoration stile in the lounge and rooms, which we liked . Good breafast

Review 31:Close to the train but we didn't find the noise prevented sleep, was more the church clock 40 chimes in the morning!!

Review 32:Helpful staff, good wifi, free bikes to use, advice on walks etc. Parking in courtyard and nice garden and terrace.

Review 33:The hotel was close to the train lines but this did not really affect the families sleep as the train stops running at around 11pm and starts back around 6am. We stayed out of season and the breakfast consisted mainly of sweet tarts, etc. the kids loved it but we would have preferred a healthier option.

Review 34:The owner was very welcoming and friendly. The hotel was a 2 minute walk to the train station and 5 minutes to the beach. Free parking was a plus.

Review 35:Nothing really

Review 36:Very close to train station 2 min. Love the breakfast outside with the birds! Very friendly staff they have wait for us till 11:00 cause of the train strike. Would return anytime!

Review 37:If train noise bothers you ask for s room away from the line side

Review 38:Comfortable and spacious room, very helpful and knowledgeable staff, nice garden breakfast setting, good restaurant recommendations, lovely town.

Review 39:The beds were a little squishy. Not all rooms have AC but we were really OK with a fan.

Review 40:We liked the access to the beach and the train, breakfast on the terrace and the sweet staff. Also there is parking and lines to hang clothes to dry.

Review 41:Like all old buildings it requires some maintenance. The bathroom was very tight and the shower base leaked a bit.

Review 42:Excellent location to explore Cinque Terre as it is only 2 short train stops away but does not have hordes of people trampling through. There is an excellent beach. The whole town is compact and there is not much climbing around. An excellent place to recharge your batteries. Breakfasts were ample but limited in choice.

Review 43:Town bells!!

Review 44:Loved the location being a short walk to beach, town and the train. Pretty town and a great base to explore the cinque terra but then escape the crowds at the end of the day. Hotel had character and plenty of space for our family.

Review 45:A few considerations: No elevator - which was not a problem for us, but might need to consider if you can't carry your bags up the stairs. Train Noise - The train is right next to the hotel and is somewhat loud; however, the train stops around 11 pm and really did not disturb us at all.

Review 46:This hotel was charming and family run. My husband and I were traveling with our 3 teen children. We were given a spacious room with a large double bed for ourselves and a room with 1 single bed and 2 bunk beds for the kids. The room was lovely, and we enjoyed opening the windows to view the sea and to listen to the town. The breakfast was served every morning on a beautiful outdoor patio nestled under the trees. The hotel was very conveniently located, right next to the train station to the Cinque Terra and just a very short walk to the town and the beach. We loved the location. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would stay again.

Review 47:Loved the place. The owners so hospitable, kind and generous. Delicious breakfast, beautiful setting in the gardens. Spacious rooms. Kid friendly. Perfect for family. Close to train station, but extremely quite. Hardly noticed train noise, and very convenient to get to other places. The owners very helpful in giving useful tips on places to visit etc. Highly recommend.

Review 48:The lovely friendly helpful owners and Staff. Made us feel at home and special .

Review 49:stuff is nice. room is clean

Review 50:Everything was great. Family run place. Louigi was so lovely, very attentive and helpful. Great family vacation!!!

Review 51:The young couple running the place where going out of their way to help you and make our stay memorable! We'll come back!!! Grazie

Review 52:Nothing

Review 53:Very well situated near the train and the beach. Very confortable and clean.Very good breakfast.

Review 54:Drive to property could be exciting

Review 55:Excellent breakfast. Free parking. Great little town

Review 56:The train and our room had no air conditioning

Review 57:Friendly hotel staff and sensational food at their restaurant

Review 58:Stairs no lift

Review 59:Breakfast great

Review 60:Such an amazing location , very helpful and friendly staff, wonderful complimentary breakfast, very fast wifi. Loved all of it

Review 61:Too much train noise. No tea or coffee available during the day. Single bed was not comfortable.

Review 62:Clean bathroom. Decent breakfast.

Review 63:Free parking

Review 64:Our family enjoyed our stay .So close to beach and walks. Very nice verandah setting.

Review 65:All good

Review 66:Quiet, safe, close to beach and other busier touristy areas

Review 67:A bit poor breakfast included

Review 68:The location, the garden, the kind and helpful staff

Review 69:Very helpful staff Convenient location

Review 70:Nothing to dislike.

Review 71:This was our second visit to this property. We had a lovely 2 level apartment suite. We would get this room again.

Review 72:I can't fault this hotel.

Review 73:Peira at the hotel made us feel like we were at home. The hotel is so close to the beach and train station. The room was extremely clean with all amenities (a/c, flat screen etc) working fine. The breakfast is more than enough serving the perfect Italian start to the day. Bonasolla is a beautiful hidden gem and will be back to enjoy it more so.

Review 74:- no lift

Review 75:- Staff was very friendly and helpful - Location near station was very convenient to catch train to Cinque Terre villages - Huge parking space

Review 76:Nice staffs, clean room, reasonable price and great views, unexpected we had a parking place as well just right downstairs. The host is easy to get on well with and gave us a lot of useful information. The train didn't bother us at all, we turned the handle of the windows and made it tide then the problem we saw in other comments before solved.

Review 77:Friendly staff. Good location near train station and Cinque Terre, earplugs were available but we didn't need them. Good breakfast. Private parking.

Review 78:Nice location close to Bonassola Station (1 min walk) & the beach, which is only a 3 minute stroll away. It was quiet when we were there (10 & 11th October) compared to the busier towns like Levanto and the towns that make up the Cinque Terre, which was beautiful by the way.

Review 79:Stairs to room. (but most hotels the same) At 78yrs lifts are an attraction. Unattended station with not all Cinque Terre trains stopping. (out of season!!!)

Review 80:Location close to rail (and beach) with easy short walk. Outdoor breakfast sitting area. Old world Italian feel. Family run.

Review 81:Could be a little close to tracks for some, but it was easily manageable for us.

Review 82:Great location away from most tourists. Can get to trains very easily. Great breakfast and assistance with plans to visit area. We, by chance, were there for the feast on first weekend of Oct. The fireworks were the best we have ever seen, the sleepy town was alive.

Review 83:This place was great! Bonassola is less crowded with tourists than therest of Cinque Terra can be. The beach is really nice. Our room here washuge and the staff was really pleasant and helpful. The complimentarybreakfast was the best we had while in Europe. Lots of home bakedgoodies and plenty to choose from, we were stuffed early in the morning! We didn't have a problem with the train noises at all!

Review 84:A bit noisy because of the trains all night...

Review 85:Central position in town. Very good alternative to the Cinque Terre towns, full of tourist groups. Lovely beach.

Review 86:First of all the staff was really nice. The room was clean, with romantic furnitures. The village is really pictureque, lovely. It's very close to cinque terre, the hotel is almost next to the train station, and to the beach as well. It was so lovely to eat the breakfast in the garden.

Review 87:The hotel is close to the train station and there are trains during the whole night. Bonassola is very small and I guess wherever you are you can hear the trains. I didnt have any issue but lightsleepers could have. However the hotel is well aware of that and provides you with earplugs.

Review 88:The hotel staff is very helpful and polite. They were happy to answer to any question we had. The room was clean, old fashioned furniture and nice bathroom. The breakfast was nice, not a big variety but adequate enough. We prefered staying in Bonassola which is right out of Cinque terre because it was not crowded. It also has a beach (cinque terre there is no beach except for Monterosso) and a very nice restaurant right in front of the beach with very nice fresh food and friendly staff: Osteria Antica Guetta.

Review 89:The climb up to my room

Review 90:Good location not far to the beach and bars and restuarants. Room clean and air conditioning which i did not expect as it was not mentioned on the web site or on the forum. Train noise did not bother me.

Review 91:The only negative thing was the bunk bed of the children. The top one made a lot of noise when they turned. We put the mattress on the floor and the problem was solved ;-) The train didn't bother us at all!

Review 92:Charming hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Only a few minutes from the beach. Good breakfast and great restaurant and beautiful garden.

Review 93:We stayed here with our three small children for four nights and really enjoyed it. Luigi and his family go out of their way to make you welcome. The dinners provided were excellent. The rooms were spotless with new bathrooms and lovely smelling products. The location is fantastic. Bonassola is a beautiful seaside town close to everything but away from the crowds. Day trips to the Cinque Terre are easy on the train and it's such a relief to return to the peace of Hotel Pensione Moderna. We highly recommend this hotel. We noticed reviews about the train noise. We didn't find the noise troubling at all and found the easy walk to the station a bonus.

Review 94:My partner used ear plugs to avoid the train noise / bells ringingfrom early hours but it didn't really bother me! Otherwise, nonegatives at all; we really enjoyed our stay.

Review 95:The location was a superb base for all of our activities - hiking, swimming, kayaking and even some tennis! The breakfast was quite basicbut this suited us fine. We had dinner one night at the hotel and it wasdelicious - would definitely eat there again. The staff were veryfriendly and helpful. Wish we had longer in the area, especially as weliked it better than the Cinque Terre towns to the South and the sea wasmuch clearer here.

Review 96:The room felt a bit small but ok. The noise of the train is an issue but ear plugs are available

Review 97:The staff were friendly and helpful and there are a number of resteraunts in this quiet town. Bonassola is a very suitable town away from the Cinque Terre but just 2 stops away on the train. You can actually walk to Levanto and then to Monterossa along the side of wooded hillside overlooking the sea. There are walks north and into the mountains also.

Review 98:No real lobby, so when it rains it's unclear where to stay if you don't want to stay in your room.

Review 99:Nice staff, good breakfast with a lot of choice, clean room (3) with good sound insulation (for the trains). Most important: location, location, location. Bonassola is small and the hotel is in the center and close to the beach, the foccacerias, the restaurants, the train station and the walking routes/towns of the cinque terre (8-23 minute train ride to Monterosso / Riomaggiore)

Review 100:It not defect! But it is proper to know about it. - there is a trainstation close to hotel , at opened window for 11 P.M. crossing (pass)train noising. We had fears on start, that it will prevent, but we didnot return notes at departure.

Review 101:Family hotel, staff was very kind! We were felt as in housePOL Hotel rodzinny, bardzo miła obsługa! Czuliśmy się jak w domu

Review 102:The noise of the treins, the hotel gave us tapons for ears, we put them and slept well. But for sensitive people, maybe they need think more before reserve the hotel, because it´s really not the fault of the hotel.

Review 103:Its next station is Levanto, and the next is Monterroso. Cinque Terre is very close. The ubication, the price, the condition is so much better than those in Cinque T. It´s quiet with little turists, has a beach, and enough restaurants for you. Smells so good the room, are clean and the garden, the dinning salon are buetiful. Just the WIFI you have to look for points in the room to get a strong sinal, but you always can find it. Not as somebody said, in our room we did have the Aire conditioner. And the staff, they are so good, I like them.

Review 104:No elevator so if you can't carry your bags up 25 steps you will have difficult time.

Review 105:Friendly staff, nice room, goodt breakfast, about two blocks from the train station and 20 minute walk from Cinque Terre towns. If you are going to the C.T. I would recommend staying here. Bonasolla is much less crowded and quieter. There are also beautiful walks and trails leading from Bonasolla if you do not go to the CinqueTerre and a decent beach two blocks from the hotel.

Review 106:Loved everything about the place

Review 107:The staff were so helpful. The rooms were very clean. The situation of was just beautiful out of the hussle and bussle yet just a bay away from it all Would stay again thank you so much Monica Robinson

Review 108:Its near the train tracks and despite having sound proof windows, it still disturb our sleep whenever a train passes by. There is also no lift and we had to carry out heavy lugguage up the flights of stairs. I travel with 2 young kids (1year and 3 years old), I would be happy if I have not been put on the 3 floor, so it's quite a hassle for me whenever I go out.

Review 109:It's clean, country style and cosy

Review 110:It is near the train station but this is very convenient for cinqueterre. The noise of the trains is not a problem. The breakfast waslovely but I would expect to get proper fresh coffee in Italy - nocoffee from a machine!

Review 111:The hotel is very friendly and welcoming with charming decour.Breakfast was served on a lovely terrace inthe garden. The beach isjust 5 minutes away.

Review 112:If your a light sleeper bring earplugs, Train station is right next door. It didn't bother me, I slept like a rock after Hiking the Cinque Terre!

Review 113:This was a nice place to stay. A warm and friendly atmosphere with staff and other guests. It is very close to the Beach and Train station. The garden was also a nice place to retreat.

Review 114:No air conditioning, and the lock on the room door was difficult.

Review 115:Convenient location near the train station and the beach. Neat, well-maintained hotel with friendly and helpful staff.

Review 116:Breakfast was very basic. The hotel didnt have much atmosphere and seemed better suited to a more mature clientele. We wished we stayed in Monterosso.

Review 117:The staff were lovely.

Review 118:there was no internet in the apartment room

Review 119:loved the authenticity of the apartment the decor was fantastic the family group that worked and provide very personal service and support ( e.g. translation within local doctor )

Review 120:I did not like the close proximity to a train station that had trains running through it all night long. There were also church bells that chimed every half hour all night, along with dogs barking throughout the night. We had no choice but to leave the windows open because our room did not have A/C. The entire hotel may not have had A/C, and our weather was hot and humid. We literally did not sleep for the two nights we stayed there. Also, our room was located on the third floor, and there was no elevator for our luggage. The bathroom was tiny, and shower was literally a square just large enough to fit one person standing up. Also, the room was only large enough for the bed and a small walking path around it. This hotel is advertised as a gourmet B&B, but it left much to be desired in my book. And I really wanted it to be great given the higher price we paid...

Review 121:I liked the hotel's food, wine, and drinks.

Review 122:Only problems would be the noise of the trains (they run into the night) and when I handed over my passport on arrival, I saw it left amongst a pile of paper work on a table in the breakfast room, so security of items is not the best.

Review 123:Easy to reach by train an a good base to see cinque terre. Nice breakfast and clean rooms.

Review 124:Place with a soul. Very good standard, cleanliness. Very friendly family owners, excellent breakfast and coffee served by Luca. You can get a real feeling of Liguria in Bonassola.

Review 125:Very friendly, near the train station to all of the cinque terre(actually you Can hear the train),the beach and restaurants ofBonassola, witch is the perfect place to visit and do the treackings tothe rest of towns! The room had all you need, is Very clean And moneyvalue. The breakfast is good. The ownner is a very nice lady, passionedby Lisbon !

Review 126:Be prepared for the train noise but if you were as tired from hiking aswe were it is no problem.

Review 127:Very warm and acomodating staff. Breakfast was good. Loved the quitelittle town setting. The patio is very good and the wi-fi works well!
