Reviews for Central Hotel Donegal

Review 1:Hotel was not as nice as we were expecting it to be. It was very outdated. However the upper deck bar was lovely and the food was delicious.

Review 2:Location was excellent

Review 3:All in all reasonable but the hotel is beginning to get a bit "tired". There were problems with heating while we were there and the breakfast was only 'ok'.

Review 4:Excellent location and very friendly staff. Overall, the stay was perfectly satisfactory for what we needed.

Review 5:Hotel is filthy. Rooms are nothing like pictures on website. Dirty bathroom, bath was yellow with stains. No kettle in room. Uncomfortable bed. Paid extra for deluxe room and I have seen better rooms in travellodge. River view is a joke, couldn't see it with dirty windows filled with condensation. Very old dated decor. Disgusting place.

Review 6:Friendly staff and located in the very centre of Donegal town.

Review 7:Steps around the hotel make it difficult to move with luggage.

Review 8:Location is good. There is guest parking. Liked the hotel/pub downstairs. Good wifi.

Review 9:there was a wedding on in the premises with loud music until 2 00 am. brought this to the attention of reception but she said there was nothing they could do about it

Review 10:location was good

Review 11:Kitchen fan outside our bedroom window - very noise. Was not switched off until we could not bear it any longer and had to ask for it to be switched off at 2.30am - very disappointed no member of management spoke to us even though we did complain.

Review 12:Very pleasant male receptionist

Review 13:The door to the room we had stayed in previously was still not fixed. Got it fixed this time.

Review 14:Friendly staff. Great bar. Has leisure centre facilities. Handy to everywhere in the town. A big thanks to Gert the most pleasant member of staff I have not met - sorted a problem over the phone, could not be more helpful. Fabulous telephone manner!

Review 15:Having dinner in bar .Breakfast was a pleasure pleasant surroundings so why could dinner not be served in the same surrounds rather than being surrounded with tv screens looking at sport .When one his on a break its nice to get away from all that and relax.

Review 16:The convience of hotel and the leisure facilities

Review 17:Had an enjoyable one night stay in The Central Hotel. The staff were excellent and greatly helpful. The room was clean and quite spacious and the view was incredible. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 18:while we were there, construction was going on, but this started after 7:30 until after 8pm. we have a young child and bed time was interrupted by the construction. Was not even offered to move rooms when the complaint was told to staff.

Review 19:Location was wonderful and staff were mostly friendly

Review 20:Overpriced, small, shabby room. Had to ask each day for fresh towels, informed front desk that reading light not functioning. It was not fixed, no electrical plug beside bed for CPAP Device. Ancient TV and worn wrinkled Carpet, no room for open suitcase.

Review 21:Location

Review 22:It was over-run by English and Scottish geriatric tour groups while we were there - which was OK, except they ate all the breakfast and smoked in their rooms.

Review 23:Fabulous location on the river, and right in centre of town.

Review 24:Rooms are tired need redecorating, rooms are a bit of a warren to get to, wouldn't feel entirely safe in a fire situation. Grand ballroom being decorated and work stats at 8am. Would liked to have been made aware of this before booking

Review 25:Location and staff

Review 26:Great location and really helpful staff. We weren't happy with first room we were given but were moved to a lovely room overlooking Donegal Bay after telling reception.

Review 27:It would be nice to have more selection on TV in the evenings.

Review 28:Our room here was very comfortable for the two nights we spent in Donegal Town. The room was spacious and the bed and pillow comfortable. I really loved the fact that we could open windows enough to cool the room down at night! The bathroom was ok but a bit cramped. The other hotel amenities were also very nice bordering on elegant. The decor of the lobby, bar and breakfast dining room were nice and comfortable. This hotel seems to be made up of two or three adjacent buildings so there are very long hallways, unusual alcoves and alternating levels throughout but that made it interesting. A ballroom was under renovation during our stay. The breakfast was quite good. Fresh fruit, yogurt and cereals were provided buffet-style and hot items, like eggs, bacon, sausage, pudding, etc, available for ordering

Review 29:Saturday night Sunday morning. I do not mind if people choose to drink in the bar all night. I do not like them keeping me awake while they are doing so

Review 30:Getting to room without assistance. The place is a rabbit warren with unavoidable stairs.

Review 31:Good location handy to all Donegal attractions. Lovely view from breakfast room

Review 32:Centrally located hotel, all amenities on the door step. (ie. shops, banks etc). Efficient check-in, friendly staff. Stayed three nights and got a nice clean and comfortable room with a lovely view of Donegal Bay. Nice leisure centre as well to relax in. Would definitely return again for another visit. .

Review 33:Staff stand offish, main bar closed to residents. We were to use a room with tables and a barman who hadn't got much experience. A customer beside me asked for vodka with ice and he poured water in before realising his mistake. Then he put ice in and handed it to the customer. For the price you pay you would expect complementary Sunday papers but I was told to go to the shop!

Review 34:The staff were incredible helpful about the car parking. It was just a shame that on the Friday afternoon we had to wait over 15mins for a car parking space.

Review 35:the incredible friendly staff. kurt even gave us a lift to wedding reception we were attending !

Review 36:Not really a bad experience but I would advise anyone booking to ask for a room well away from the generator, my daughter was in 177 and had to keep the window closed because of the noise of the generator outside. I was in 359, well away from the generator and had a lovely view of the bay. Also, just a minor point, although the beds were extremely comfortable, the pillows were very firm and it would have been good if there had been at least one softer one. It didn't however, mar our stay in any way and we hope to be back again next year.

Review 37:Great hotel, location marvellous and staff so efficient and pleasant. Enjoyed our stay very much. Myself, my daughter and her six year old son, plus a friend were in Donegal for the Food Festival and our stay at the Central made our visit most enjoyable. We loved the pool, could hardly get my grandson out!

Review 38:You pay for what you don't get: a place to rest. We stayed here on a Friday and couldn't sleep because of the music of the bar next door till they moved us to another wing of the hotel at one o'clock in the morning! And we had booked a "quiet room" (and they had other rooms, bigger, nicer, quieter). Never stay at the wing of room 151, unless you want to be part of the party going on. And: you can't open the window because of the noise of the air conditioning device; tiny bathroom also in this room; and no wifi except in the lobby.

Review 39:The fact that we're in the city.

Review 40:Our room overlooked the bay with a beautiful view. The room was spacious and very luxurious, the staff was most helpful and cheerful. Equal to most 5 star hotels.

Review 41:not much to do around the area nothing for small kids but other than that everything else was good

Review 42:everything was great hotel lovely beds very comfortable kids enjoyed room. we went on we boat trip and went to see castle very good and close to hotel breakfast was nice and restaurant for dinner was lovely

Review 43:We had no air con but did receive a fan on request but it was broken. Couldn't get many channels on TV

Review 44:beautiful view from our bedroom . Food was very good

Review 45:Breakfast and breakfast location was poor. A massive room filled with coach parties and only one person serving at the hot breakfast table. Little choice on offer and to be served half slices of black pudding and sausage is insulting. To describe this as a buffet breakfast is inaccurate and its certainly not worth the money.

Review 46:Location of hotel. Good room with excellent view. Friendly and helpful staff

Review 47:Noise from generator which our room was beside was horrendous. Not enough staff in breakfast room. Service was a disaster, staff were nice but overwhelmed. We had to clean off our own table. When returning to our table with hot breakfast there was no cutlery. Tea was brought out to us but no cups. Tea was cold by time cups arrived

Review 48:The hotel is right in the middle of the town, "central" to everything. As it's so busy there is a real buzz atmosphere, will definitely be back.

Review 49:Thought it was bad one had to go and change the ticket for the car every morning when a simple three day, five day, or weekly ticket would have prevented this trek. Also no variation on breakfast, the same served every day, could have had boiled eggs or continental breakfast, and no fresh fruit available other than the fruit salad, would have been nice to offer a banana, apple or orange.

Review 50:I did eat in hotel first nite was good do went back second nite not so good waited an hour for order for dinner 2 be taken when it came not definitely sirloin steak was frying steak did complain was offered replacement declined no what can happen when returned 2 kitchen disappointing as 1st nite was good

Review 51:Good location room clean and comfortable bathroom a bit pokey overall found staff friendly

Review 52:Only problem was the distance we had to park.

Review 53:It was close to everything we wanted to do and see as we were only there for one night. It was clean and comfortable, loved Donegal.

Review 54:the breakfast wasn't great and let the hotel down a bit.

Review 55:Lovely hotel and wonderful staff especially John Carr who was serving bar taking food orders delivering food and still managed to be there when you needed him....would highly recommend and will definitely stay again :)

Review 56:We had a shabby dirty room 207at first, but we got upgraded to a much better room by a very helpful Irish lady.we had to wait over ten minutes and still didn't get served on the first floor as the two staff were busy with food orders,we went elsewhere.

Review 57:The location

Review 58:There were lots of tour groups.

Review 59:Great location. Bus stop is in front of the hotel! Great pool and leisure center. Rooms in the back have nice views of the water.

Review 60:The layout of the hotel was difficult. Specifically access to at least some guest rooms was difficult. Our travel schedule set us for a one night stay which probably made the trek to our I bedroom all the more difficult. We may have been on a more inaccessible guest room floor,

Review 61:We liked the bar atmosphere, food, and superior staff. A female staff person, she was not assigned to the bar, was especially pleasant and efficient. We saw her several times in different areas of the building. She deserves recognition for her diligent dedication and excellent rapport with guests.

Review 62:The breakfast selection was poor. Very limited selection like pasteries, fresh whole fruits. Had to ask waiting staff for tea/ coffee. The bedroom doors all slam shut when another guest leaves the room, this starts at 7am and continues for the entire morning. Not a relaxing break. Told the reception on duty sunday morning and she didnt even apologise!! Reception greeting was just ok. Had to ask for the wifi password myself and wasnt told about the breakfast service time even though it was booked and in my rate.

Review 63:The hotel is perfectly located right in the centre. The Bar staff (elderly gentleman) looked after us very well while working on his own in the bar. Food was excellent, great variety on the menu and tasted great. The house red is excellent. Great value for money.

Review 64:TV was an old bulky CRT type with no USB port. Would suggest replacing these with more modern flatscreen TVS which have USB ports. One of the plug sockets did not work which left only two sockets for three people! No good since all phones and cameras needed to be charged :-(

Review 65:Hotel was basic and a bit dated but overall quite comfortable.

Review 66:Room was ok buy just had basic stuff in it. Was quite expensive for our room-only booking. Wi-fi was very very weak.

Review 67:Location absolutely superb. Right on The Diamond in the middle of the lovely town of Donegal. Car parking close by and free parking permit kindly provided by the hotel. A business-like hotel, helpful staff.

Review 68:Phone and main lights in room didn't work- reported several times to reception! Wash basin chipped and hot tap moved. Air con units outside window noisy. Furniture dated and room too hot tho heating off.

Review 69:Great location and free parking really good. Good food choices and bar staff excellent. Towels lovely and fluffy-great quality.

Review 70:See Previous comments , to travel 500 miles to miss by one night was annoying.

Review 71:Location, but more details of events would be good as we missed our favourite singer Nathan Carter. SO MORE DETAILS on BOOKING we will be BACK !1

Review 72:Access to hotel blocked when we arrived [5.30pm on 05/07]& two Gardai at barrier quite unhelpful "Leave your car here and walk". Eventually, assisted by two young people, we got parked but the 2 non English speaking reception staff[especially the male] were quite "bolshi' and dismissive as we lugged our luggage into hotel which we discovered does not have a car park despite web's "fre car park". Male kept saying that it had nothing to do with him. Had used White owned hotels in past. We are 76 and 71 and expected more.

Review 73:nothing

Review 74:The location is right in the centre of donegal town which was good for sightseeing and travelling around. there was entertainment in the evening in this hotel and also in other bars around. The food in the bar was very good.

Review 75:Our view was a wall and the springs were gone in the middle of the bed so not the comfiest.

Review 76:Staff were very friendly and the hotel is in a great location.

Review 77:On both evenings there was a lot of noise coming from our corridor, I think it may hae been a stag night. The girl on reception on Saturday morning was not very helpful & was flipant when I complained. I think her name was Jenna/Jenny - not sure. Her manner was quite aloof & not overly friendly or helpful at all.

Review 78:Rooms were spacious & were lucky enough to have a great view of the river Most of the staff were helpful & friendly Entertainment was very good on both evenings Food was great Breakfast was excellent. Phil in the breakfast room could not do enough for us & went that extra mile both mornings to provide food that was not part of the self service food

Review 79:The room was very warm and we couldnt open the window to get some air. We experienced a lot of noise from the room next door but I rang the front desk and it was sorted immediately.

Review 80:Lovely room, very clean, comfy bed. Great breakfast buffet, roasting hot food as well as plenty of cereals and juices.

Review 81:Didnt like the cleaner coming to bedroom at 9 am to clean and we were there for 2 nites needed a lie in

Review 82:Hotel was v comfortable reception staff were friendly

Review 83:Young man at reception offered no assistance with our luggage. We later learned that there were porters available.

Review 84:central location; great restaurant/pub The Castle nearby.

Review 85:Getting lost! Could never find way to bedroom or back to lobby! Like a rabbit maze! Perhaps the puzzle good to keep my brain working! Parking to unload suitcases difficult!

Review 86:Homely,character hotel

Review 87:We got charged for a triple room and there was only 2 people in the room unfortunately one of our friends lost his mother last week so he wasn't in the right frame of mind to travel.

Review 88:Rather old fashioned in style, and larger than would be our ideal choice. Appeared to get a lot of business from coach parties.

Review 89:Central location, good facilities. Top marks to staff for realising we'd arrived on motorbikes and needed a safe place to park them overnight.

Review 90:Room 352 was very noisy with the extractor fan, or some such, from the kitchen outside the window, however a discount was given by helpful reception staff.

Review 91:Location, good Irish singer in lounge

Review 92:Fan in bathroom was very loud. We could even hear the fans from other rooms. There are stairs on each floor after you use the lift which is difficult for people with mobility problems. We had to change our room. Rooms are small and dark.

Review 93:Good location in the centre of town.

Review 94:Leaving we struggled with our cases on stairs along the landing as we did arriving. But I,m sure if we had asked for help it would have been available. Rooms are a little tired looking

Review 95:Arriving

Review 96:Don't like that there is no private car park and you have to pay for public parking. Also we couldn't get a space so had to park at another hotel we were visiting for wedding!

Review 97:Nice staff , great location right in heart of Donegal

Review 98:The description of the deluxe room on your website did not match the reality in the hotel. Large double beds were in short supply. Hotel upgraded us though to the honeymoon suite.

Review 99:The friendly atmosphere. I liked the upgrade we got.

Review 100:The cleanliness of the bathroom was disappointing. Due to wooden toilet fittings which gave off unpleasant odour. Only wish we had mentioned it to management before we left.

Review 101:The view from our bedroom was stunning looking down Donegal bay. friendliness of staff really appreciated.

Review 102:Staff were not very helpful upon arrival Was given the keys to the wrong room which people were already staying in. Room was filthy and very old fashioned, like stepping back into the set of father ted. Taps in bathroom didn't work Was extremely expensive for what we got Bed sheets had various stains on them

Review 103:Not much to like about this hotel

Review 104:We didn't like the music finishing so early in the hotel

Review 105:The staff were very nice and helpful, the facilities very good, and the hotel itself in a very good location

Review 106:The hotel was in a great location in central Central Donegal. The hotel had a traditional grand feel to it and the staff were extremely friendly and happy to help. All our requirements were done prior to arrival including rooms ready fore srly check in and a room close to lift for my Grandma and her friend. I would definitely reccomend this hotel.

Review 107:the only down side was walking all the way from the back of hotel to the front with baggage because i could not find access through back door.

Review 108:attitude of staff brilliant.

Review 109:The bar was not good. No local beers, no cocktail experience. I ordered a Sapphire Gin Martini and received a water glass with 2 ice cubes a shot of gin and a shot of vermouth, yuck!!! poor attitude.

Review 110:My first room did not have a 'welcome' booklet, and there was a loud sound from the kitchen fan throughout the night. But the staff were very good and gave me another room.

Review 111:The swimming pool.

Review 112:There are some steps between parts of the building that can be inconvenient to navigate with baggage, but this is only to be expected in a traditional Irish hotel and was not an issue. We enjoyed our stay in Donegal greatly.

Review 113:The hotel was in a great central location; good views; upon drop off the hotel provided a parking voucher for use in one of the nearby carparks. The hotel staff were helpful.

Review 114:The furniture in rooms was dated. Old style TVs , didn't know they still worked . Hair dryers were on the wall which is not itself a problem but you had to hold the power button to keep it on, which could be a challenge .

Review 115:Location , food . The breakfast was good and we had meals in the hotel which were good quality and reasonably priced .

Review 116:Chinese torture of a drip all night. I reported it. Dining room chairs were filthy. Breakfast could have been better. Eggs had a skin on them, but did manage to get a soft one. bacon had white stuff on. Sausage deep fried. Fruit salad was good.

Review 117:Very central. View from dining room spectacular as it was a lovely sunny morning.

Review 118:Parking was difficult and we were not advised prior to arriving that we could get a parking ticket from the hotel. Would be helpful to know in advance. The breakfast buffet should have been a buffet for all courses as there was a long queue for the hot breakfast- not necessary to be served this.

Review 119:Location good ; great value for money; rooms fine; staff very welcoming.

Review 120:Window in bathroom didn't seal, constantly allowing blowing of cold air Room only accessible by going up and down various stairs with no ramps

Review 121:My room overlooked the river and it was a beautiful view of the bay and the rookery. Comfortable bed and plenty of furniture which makes a long stay easier Excellent water pressure and drain in the shower Hotel located on the main square with plenty of shops and food places and a five minute walk to the castle, railway museum, harbor walk, abbey, and boat ride. Parking close by. Restaurant had delicious soup and bread (other things on the menu, but that's all I ate)

Review 122:bit dated, like a maze ,higgledy piggledy stairs and landings, not much, but noticeable.

Review 123:the location, the town, the facilities of the hotel, if we were staying longer, pool, gym etc

Review 124:I found the housekeeping standard's very poor. I stayed a while and my room was never hovered and the bathroom not cleaned properly. Empty water bottles left in room as well as glasses not removed.

Review 125:Very friendly staff and good food.

Review 126:FOUND THE HOTEL NOISEY AT TIMES PLUS ROOM WAS VERY WARM FROM TIME TO TIME EVEN AFTER ADJUSTING THE HEATER

Review 127:DONEGAL TOWN ALWAYS VERY FRIENDLY & RELAXING. LOCATION CENTRAL TO EVER WERE. SHOWER WAS EXCELLENT

Review 128:the staff in teh bar were grouchy, unfriendly and quite abrupt. There were not enough plugs in the room for a triple.

Review 129:The food in teh bar was amazing, the staff on reception were really friendly and accomodating and the room size was comfortable with 3 beds.

Review 130:Wi-fi was a bit hit and miss, not just in this hotel but in other pubs and restaurants in town. Was not a problem over which they had control.

Review 131:The location, staff friendliness and quality of room were top class. The food served in the bar area was good and breakfast in Just Williams was of high quality.

Review 132:The view from the window was onto a roof with a shed and aircon unit. And it was quite a long walk from reception to the room, especially becasue you cant park right outside you have to park dow the street in the pier carpark, but not really alot they can do about that.

Review 133:Room was quite good, nice beds and the shower was nice, also had some shower gel fitted incase you forgot your own was a nice touch.

Review 134:The staff were slightly unpleasant and could crack a smile every now and again! Booked a meal in the restaurant for half 8 didn't arrive till 10 and they messed up our order with the excuse that it was Valentine's Day and very busy which I find a poor excuse! Only dislike I had of the place!

Review 135:Me and my wife had a very comfortable stay at the Central, leisure facilities are pleasant welcome and the hotel was close to all you needed

Review 136:Nothing

Review 137:I would like to commend one particular member of staff her name is Tamarra she is a waitress in the upper deck bar she is the most hard working and helpful member of staff in the hotel. The other staff members were friendly and helpful but she stood out.
