Reviews for Abbey Hotel Donegal

Review 1:Room was spotless but decor a bit outdated. Beds wre uncomfortable n room was too warm to sleep. Breakfast would just be k more selection would be needed but you could eat it.xx

Review 2:Me and my partner traveled to donegal town to stay In the abbey hotel to see the brendan grace show. Staff were very nice n check In and explained everyting about the hotel to us. We are in the bar before the show and I hve to say the food was beautiful and staff were more than helpful.xx

Review 3:Breakfast finishes too early. the pool facilities in the sister hotel next door are very poor needs refurbishing, jacuzzi cold

Review 4:Great hotel in a great location with plenty of music entertainment, Food was fab too. Staff very pleasent

Review 5:No bad reviews

Review 6:The staff were the best i have come across in any hotel. So friendly and helpful. The food also excellent. I highly recommend Abbey Hotel

Review 7:Got no sleep on first night. Our room connected to room next to us and you would have thought that the six or more young males were in room with us. They knocked doors all night. We did complain but we weren't acknowledged.

Review 8:Breakfast. We showed up approx 840 am. Wasn't overly busy approx 25 people in the restaurant. Scrambled eggs were rock hard. No proper toaster, just a tray with soft lightly coloured bread in lieu of toast. Had to ask a few times to get coffee. Staff all walking about purposefully avoiding eye contact so as not to be asked questions. Also, not sure if it's supposed to be rated as 4* but it's definitely not. Room we had was big, but very dated. Bathroom decor is a throw back to the 80's and I dont think it's a conscious design decision.

Review 9:Central location. Clean. Warm shower.

Review 10:As it was our wedding anniversary on booking I had requested a nice quiet room. We had a lovely big room, which was away from the front of the hotel, therefore it was exceptionally quiet & we received a complementary bottle of champagne delivered to our room, this was a big surprise & totally unexpected. I have since told friends & colleagues about the fact that my comment on booking was more than honoured. We had a lovely stay & a lovely time there.

Review 11:Due to the very central location in a small & busy provincial town, and through no fault of the hotel, parking was unavoidably a little inconvenient. Though not really a problem, and worth the short stroll to the hotel for the pleasure of the stay.

Review 12:Friendly attentive staff made us feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble, and the whole experience had a 'family' atmosphere. Checking in and out was smooth and courteous - really felt like a familiar guest rather than merely another customer!

Review 13:we had a grumpy waiter in the restaurant however the food was lovely he was abrupt and not helpful.

Review 14:Location, restaurant and bar facilities onsite. The hotel looks our over the main square which is lovely at Christmas time! the hotel was decorated lovely for Christmas. Breakfast was good too.

Review 15:Wanted to eat in bar at 7:30pm staff told us they were not doing food even though menu advertised food until 9pm main restaurant was booked out so couldn't eat in hotel ..also got no sleep as it was very noisy until 6am when I complained next morning I was told I should have phoned night porter when I explained I did ring but he didn't answer I was told I should of went looking for him....absurd

Review 16:Location good

Review 17:They all (staff - people involved - were WONDERFUL!!!...

Review 18:This hotel is the "FINEST" of all the hotels (in 60 yrs) I've 'EVER' stayed in!)... Thank you, DONEGAL xxxx

Review 19:Inadequate bar staff serving food...half hour wait despite going to bar 4 times. One plug only in room..disappointing overall for the price paid..

Review 20:Staff were pleasant. Room was clean.

Review 21:I loved every minute of our stay there.

Review 22:The staff where so helpful and so nice. And the restaurant manager Anne was so kind. Add advise anyone wishing to go to go it's great hotel.

Review 23:No heating in room complain to recepition waited for over two hours,no one came so had to go and complain again. was move to another room which was over some sort of air conditioning outside my widow.which sounded like being in a airport did not get much sleep. do not usually complain but was not very happy with my stay

Review 24:Friendly staff

Review 25:Like any hotel you can't always have the best room so I can't really complain about the poor view :) Maybe next time we will be lucky to have a 'room with a view'.

Review 26:Hotel is in a good part - central to the wee pubs and shops. Staff were very helpful - from cleaning staff to waitresses to reception.

Review 27:Beds were quite uncomfortable and you could hear everything through the thin walls. Most noise came through the ventilation shaft in the bathroom.

Review 28:Staff was really friendly and welcoming. Great central location right in the heart of Donegal Town.

Review 29:having to park the car some distance away and we know there is nothing you can do to fix that and perhaps you can have a special area outside the hotel to allow for unloading/loading luggage as was a nightmare with the buses parking in front

Review 30:very good location and food was great a very helpfull bar man who gave us some great information on the areas to visit

Review 31:Can't really say anything I did not like.

Review 32:We went for a relaxing night. Room lovely food great. Very central to different locations. Went for drive to killybegs. No music in bar but it was off season can understand

Review 33:The receptionist made a few mistakes about our payment. We were given the wrong receipt for a start and then we got a phone call to say that we did,nt pay and the money would be taken from my Card.We were still in Donegal town so we went to desk and got sorted. Embarrassing.

Review 34:the weather was great for going for a walk. The bar and music were very good, the 1st wee group were great, second big band was too much ravy for us, still good tho.

Review 35:Nothing everything was fantastic.

Review 36:Excellent hotel and the staff were brilliant. Rooms and everything were fantastic. Brilliant hotel in a brilliant location.

Review 37:Great location, right in the center of town. We loved staying in Donegal! The staff was great- arranged for us to have a "quiet room" since there was a huge halloween party the night we were there- seemed to be a party for young people from miles around. Parking was free- but in a lot down the street, which was a little inconvenient, but to be expected with such a great location in a small ancient village.

Review 38:We were not amused at the fire alarm going off twice on our first night and keeping us awake and not being told why

Review 39:We were very happy with the food and thought the menus were excellent

Review 40:Getting to our room, if took the wrong steps/ elevator took 10 minutes to get there.

Review 41:The staff in the restaurant during breakfast were exceptional good, very friendly. And helpful.

Review 42:Easy walking distance to Donegal castle. Restaurants abound. The boat tour is just down the street. It was a good starting point for an interesting country drive to the coastal cliffs.

Review 43:The view on the courtyard + chimneys + all kinds of tubes and vents, including the noise of the exhausts/ inlets of the airconditioning.

Review 44:The staff, Donegal

Review 45:It's a small gripe about the parking being a fair distance from the hotel.

Review 46:Friendly staff and excellent food in the restaurant. Great value for money.

Review 47:Wouldn't say didn't like but view from room could have been better!

Review 48:I was travelling alone, felt at ease. Friendly staff and excellent size room. Only minor thing was not best view from my room. Other than that I thought it was fantastic value for money and would definitely stay here again.

Review 49:Being in the hotel less than 12 hours and desk staff informed us we would need to pay for parking if we went on a tour. Do these people really want our money?

Review 50:Being in the city center

Review 51:Our room was next to dingy little courtyard with cigarette butts all over the place. It wasn't very pleasant to look at.

Review 52:It's just a great location. Right in the center of town, it's perfect.

Review 53:Unloading and loading luggage due to parking but apart from thatfirst class

Review 54:The helpfulness of your staff when they found out my wife was sruggulingwalking and suddenly appeard with a wheelchair well done

Review 55:Breakfast wasn't great, didn't get up for it the second day. It is hard serving that many meals, B&B's are better for breakfast. Our room faced the street, a little loud.

Review 56:Right on the square, we loved the location.

Review 57:Shower/bath not the most convenient for my wife who was almost 8 months pregnant. Not easily accessed and very confined.

Review 58:Great Central location, very friendly staff.

Review 59:We had a room facing street and where awake till 3am with the noise down stairs and then woken with the bin truck around 06:30am!So wouldn't advice that room to people who enjoy quiteness

Review 60:Nothing of note.

Review 61:Location and convenience, our bus pulled up right outside hotel. The room was in great condition and there was plenty of choice for beds. Great views and choice. The staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 62:Wished we had be able to stay longer.

Review 63:The hotel was spotless. when we arrived there was no parking spaces due to food festival being held no problem to the Abbey staff, very nice gentleman called John brought us to where the hotel had arranged other parking space out side town then brought us back to hotel. The bed was so comfortableThe night porter was very pleasent even though it was very late when we got back from our wedding in other location.excellent keep up the great work.

Review 64:Rooms were very warm so made it uncomfortable to sleep. The breakfast was average with limited choice. Our stay was overpriced for what we got. Unfortunately the best hotel Donegal Town has to offer.

Review 65:Location was great. Valet car parking and late night residents bar.

Review 66:Information at time of booking indicated that car parking was available. This turned out to be a public car park. As I was hiring a very expensive new car this was a worry I didn't need. Better information needed.

Review 67:The Assistant Manager is doing a fantastic job. All the staff were very customer oriented and we had a lovely time. It was our Honeymoon and they upgraded us to a room with a beautiful roll top, stand alone bath, in our room. We loved the place!!

Review 68:Front desk staff could be friendlier and more welcoming considering we were from Canada and not familiar with the hotel and area. Bed was very hard.

Review 69:Pub was fun and live music was a treat. Location was good.

Review 70:No leisure facilities and I feel the cost was too high considering no leisure facilities . I thought breakfast was very average for the price and no fresh fruit .

Review 71:Location, staff, size of room

Review 72:Parking is free, but it's a 5 minute walk away.

Review 73:Located right on the city center 'Diamond'. Our room was on the back, overlooking the river; quite spacious. The included breakfast buffet was grand. Quiet night.

Review 74:A fine hotel in the center of town. The rooms were comfortable, clean and very quite. The staff were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was quite good.

Review 75:We were travelling around Donegal and only had a one night stay booked in the Abbey. On the night we arrived the hotel was booked for a Debs night. Everything was fine until the function finished and all the young people poured onto the street outside the hotel and continued their party. The noise was unbelievable and didn't finish until a bus arrived at 6.30am. We did not get any sleep. The next morning I asked to see a manager and was told no one would be available until 12 noon.

Review 76:The Hotel is located in the centre of Donegal town, close to everything. the bedroom was perfect for a family of 5,every one had a proper bed (no camp beds).

Review 77:Had to wait till 5pm till our room was ready. Too many unsupervised children running about the hotel during the Sunday afternoon.

Review 78:very clean and staff very nice

Review 79:Bedrooms; outdated, old fashioned and desperately in need of redecoration. Vastly overpriced; one expects to pay more for a Saturday night stay, however €171 for a B&B rate is outrageous I feel, especially for such outdated rooms.

Review 80:Location; centrally located in a lovely little town. Reception/lobby; very grand yet welcoming Dinner; meals were devine and plentiful (portion size was huge) and staff could not do enough to cater for us during the meal.

Review 81:The breakfast was ok, but there was little choice of breads, the toastwas cold as it was precooked (actually it was hot bread!) and only fullfat milk was available. The parking was offsite down a hill in thepublic car park, not too far but away from the hotel, but it was free touse. The hotel is an 'entertainment' hotel which means thatthere is music in the bar every night and also a disco running until230am which you can hear from most rooms. The room ( which was a suite)did not have any view, overlooked working ducts. The tv did not workproperly and when we reported it, it did not get fixed. There was also aserious lack of plugs available for use in the room, only one wasaccessible to use any more you needed to unplug the tv or kettle.

Review 82:The location was really good in the centre of Donegal, walkingdistance to the harbour, many pubs and restaurants. The room was niceand the beds comfortable. The pool from the hotel next door was freeto use and was nice.

Review 83:would like a front room when we book to stay again other than this i enjoyed the stay in the hotel

Review 84:staff very friendly @helpful good music my wife like the sauna and swimming pool next door

Review 85:Not having car space outside or near front door for unloading luggage as a result intimidation occurs from obnoxious bus eireann drivers!!!!!!

Review 86:Market restaurant

Review 87:The day before we left the room was not serviced until 5.30pm so gave us no time to rest before dinner later after a busy day.we enjoyed our

Review 88:Central, friendly, food good,

Review 89:Unfortunately, the "disco" was in full (until 2 a.m.) and loud mode. An almost sleepless night. The staff got us into the Central Hotel (almost next door) for the next...quiet...night.

Review 90:Great location in the middle of town.

Review 91:Bus stop is right out front of hotel, so dinner seated at the window was very distracting and not calm and comfortable at all. Every 5 minutes travelers looking down on you and your meal.

Review 92:Very convenient location right in the heart of town. Close to bars, restaurants, shopping and historic sites. Arrived early evening, most shops closed at 6pm. Very welcoming and helpful staff, good food, clean and week kept hotel.

Review 93:Mattress needs replaced but the room itself was cozy charming.

Review 94:This place is delightful and the seafood chowder is the best in Ireland (that I had and I tried the fish chowder in every town we went through) The room was totally charming and I recommend this hotel to anyone heading down the west coast of Ireland.

Review 95:If you like a restful nights sleep and are staying Thursday thru Sunday nights, be warned, this hotel has a night club in it which goes though to at least 2.30am on each of those nights. Would suggest you insist on an inside room on the highest floor possible as the sound of the music base reverberates through the lower floors. Rooms at the rear and street front suffer badly from the sound of early morning revellers.

Review 96:The hotel is very well located in the heart of Donegal town.

Review 97:Only thing was when we arrived, hotel did not have our booking, but when we produced our conformation they very promptly got us sorted out. This was no fault of the abbey hotel, but the fault of Booking.com,who we booked through, but they did not pass on our booking,

Review 98:Great hotel, clean, food excellent, entertainment, staff excellent, great few days in the abbey hotel, would highly recomened, will be back here, this was my first time in Ireland, but won't be the last xx

Review 99:lack of secure parking. Nowhere to unload car in front of hotel as tourist buses took up all the space.

Review 100:There was a lift , for which we were grateful, having 2 large and 2 small cases. Room was large and clean. Central position of hotel, near to Donegal tweed shops.

Review 101:Breakfast was buffet style cooked breakfast, not very well presented (messy) and not up to the standard we would expect and experience across N Ireland. Very much a contrast to the excellent evening meal we had the night before.

Review 102:Great location, great food, great staff !

Review 103:our room was above the entry doors. The smokers all gather at the front door, restricting access and filling our room with smoke whenever the window was open.

Review 104:Maybe I'm just too lazy when it holiday mode, but I hardly ever get a chance to take advantage of my inclusive breakfast when it finishes by 10am! On the day I did make it though, the food was delicious. So the only thing I would change is if breakfast was available until 11am, but that's very minor!

Review 105:Luxury room, great location and friendly staff. 12pm checkout is a godsend too! Would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone staying in the area.

Review 106:Night club Saturday night to early hours. Hotel reception/bar (and hotel entrance) resembled bordello - noise of music and drunken people (non guests mostly). Two burly bouncers on the door said it all, although we did not see any violence and were not harassed or made to feel at risk. Ask in advance for quiet room and they will accommodate, which I did. Was offered 26 euro discount when I fed back to hotel although I neither asked for it expected it. Will stay again.

Review 107:See above

Review 108:Unfortunately we had a bad experience on Saturday night with regards of the noise level outside the hotel, we were situated on the first floor above the front door a lot of loud noise (shouting etc) went on to the early hours so didn't get much sleep

Review 109:On the Saturday night we dined in the market house restaurant it was absolutely delicious ,highly recommend it . Staff were very helpful

Review 110:large group of germans arrived at same time and were also in the way at breakfast. Barpersonel very unfriendly with drinks and food. they didn't want us.

Review 111:roomview on the river

Review 112:water tank did not work,. they fixed but it stop working shortly after. no value for that money. breakfast was average too. we will not recommend it.

Review 113:location was great

Review 114:wifi was awful, worked in hotel foyer, but nothing in room, I was "told" someone was working on it! It was raining very hard most of the day unfortunately, and cold and windy my room was really cold and a draught coming through the windows, so I had to close curtains and it was only 4 oclock, when asked what time the heating came on the receptionist said it should be on, it never came on but I was given a heater which was more than welcome and told the heating was off for the summer

Review 115:situation of hotel, lovely breakfast, very quiet room, never heard or saw another person on my floor and the view from room was lovely (on a good day)

Review 116:Poor wifi wouldn't load even after wifi was reset. Had to log into Central Hotel wifi next door to get good wifi in this hotel

Review 117:Central location to live music at the Reel Inn around the corner

Review 118:I would have liked to see a greater variety of cooked foods for breakfast 7 an emphasis on irish produce - eg pancakes, black/white pudding, boiled eggs, soda farls, potato bread.

Review 119:Lovely hotel in central location.

Review 120:superb location right in centre. Parking very close by plus overnight free voucher . Rooms large and comfortable with all amenities and good heating .Staff terrific especially in restaurant . Meals in hotel restaurant fantastic and real value, try steak on a stone!! Superb huge breakfast choice Will definitely be back Very impressed indeed

Review 121:Parking is not very convenient for dropping off bags. Lounge music was so loud that you could feel the bass through the floor. Didn't really mind people having fun but at 2:45am?

Review 122:Location is right off the diamond.

Review 123:Had no wifi signal at all..a bit too pricey for what we got. Could not get parked close and was impossible to find a back carpark for hotel.

Review 124:Breakfast..bathroom was lovely.

Review 125:The hotel could not find our booking. The girl at the desk spent a long time trying to find the reservation. She didn't take the time reassure us that there were still rooms and we would be okay. When we opened the door to our hotel room it was set up as a conference room. We had to go back to the main desk to get new keys to a room with beds.

Review 126:The location was wonderful right on the square.

Review 127:Our room window looked at the roof of part of the hotel, the bathroom could use some tlc.

Review 128:Good location in the middle of the town center. Breakfast is nice!

Review 129:The bed was very hard and pillows too soft so did not sleep too well and had pain in my back as a result , thats the only thing that was bad everything else was excellent !!!

Review 130:The staff were all lovely , the hotel was so lovely and clean the food was good and all the facilities were great !

Review 131:we thought the layout of breakfast could have flowed better - cereal was one place, juice not beside the cereal.

Review 132:good receptionists, pleasant bar plus bar meals good service

Review 133:Breakfast time was from 7am to 10am. We arrived at 9.45. We were shown to our table which was not clean and needed a wipe and there was crumbs in our coffee cups. We asked for coffee and were given tea. As we were eating the place was starting to be cleared this made us feel uncomfortable and we felt we had to hurry breakfast.

Review 134:Room was clean, bed was comfortable, shower was good and free wi-if was also a good feature.

Review 135:Eastern was clearly party time, so with a band playing and disco afterwards, it became closer to 0330 before we finally could sleep. My advise, check possible party before booking

Review 136:Location was perfect and the staff was very friendly and helpsom!! We had dinner in the restaurant and can only recommend it!!! No need to look for other places

Review 137:The wifi didn't work for me in the restaurant/bar. Not a big deal though.

Review 138:The hotel was good and the Staff was nice and helpful. The town was nice with all the small shops right there. Free parking was close to the hotel.Great food in the bar.

Review 139:This hotel must be one of Donegal town's best kept secrets . Our room was bright and cheery , staff were friendly and helpful and the evening meals were superb. Steak on the stone -a gourmet sensation -all at a very reasonable price. Well done Abbey.
