Reviews for City Garden Hotel

Review 1:My only gripe would be the ridiculously small number of tv channels available. Only 5, pretty poor considering there are a lot more free to air channels than that. No microwave in my room.

Review 2:For city sight seeing or going out you can't go wrong here. Compact but clean, perfect for a few nights. Ability to open a window and get fresh air also a plus.

Review 3:The hotel was located on a night life street, with loud club music and drunken hooligans yell and rome the street all night.

Review 4:The location to the shopping district is good

Review 5:I have explained above the very poor state of two walls that were dirty and covered in stains and marks with huge areas of peeling paint and damaged plaster. The windows were really dirty with an ancient grotty old blind. There was also no microwave in it even though it was a studio apartment. The guy at the desk didn't know what he was talking about and was unhelpful.

Review 6:Location was great but condition of interior was abysmal with long wall facing bed dirty and covered in marks. Adjoining wall had huge swathes of peeling paint and dirty stained plaster. The windows were filthy abd blind dirty and decrepit. None of these parts of tbe room are shown in their photos only other two walls that seemed to have been painted and are fine. Why didn't they finish painting it....???

Review 7:Sunlight streaming into the room from early summer dawn. Loved by many - completely disagreeable to me. Especially after a big night on the turps. Window blinds adequate for privacy but no good for keeping the light out. If you want an early start this is your location.

Review 8:Extremely convenient location.

Review 9:The downside of the location was the noise from the street in the earlyhours of the morning. Was annoyed when the person at reception tried tomake me pay extra on arrival even though I'd pre-paid withBooking.com!

Review 10:A great location & real value for money for basic, comfortable &clean accommodation in the heart of Melbourne's cbd.

Review 11:Little Bourke St is quite noisy early morning (4am) with rubbish and delivery trucks banging up the street. Room has blinds but no block out curtains so room was very bright in the morning which didn't allow for much if a sleep in. Great location otherwise as close to Central CBD.

Review 12:Great location.

Review 13:The only down side to the location is that it can be noisy at night until the dining crowds disperse.

Review 14:The position is excellent to dining and transport facilities.

Review 15:Lighting in bathroom, curtains letting light in, how they only take 1 night out of the pay not the whole stays amount, tv wasn't working well/1 battery in the remote.

Review 16:It was close to the CBD& had good furniture

Review 17:No airconditioning and my key didn't work on the first attempt I had to come back downstairs with my luggage and have it activated

Review 18:Quiet, easy access, location was perfect for what I needed, right near hardware lane which is famous for excellent breakfasts

Review 19:Unfortunately there's a night club right next door and as we stayed on a Saturday night for our first night - it was loud! We were on floor 5, and the view was a brick wall but it wasn't expensive to stay here.

Review 20:Great location, very central to everything. In-room facilities were great and hotel was clean.

Review 21:The noise. My first night i had to listen to the next room couple's furious fight all night long even after complaints, was very annoying. No view from the room.

Review 22:Staff moved me to another room next day after complaining about the noise.

Review 23:No view. Was a little hard to find initially. Pillows could have been a bit thicker. TV didn't have enough channels.

Review 24:Close to everything - shops, trams, restaurants. Friendly staff. Room was clean and tidy and serviced daily. Affordable. Was in a quieter street. Mini market directly across the road. Free Wifi

Review 25:Noise seemed to travel through the walls, I could hear babies crying, guests coming and going, doors closing and conversations. Took some getting used to.

Review 26:Perfect location for shopping and food. Rooms were tidy enough.

Review 27:Room was not very clean. Next door is an industrial kitchen that you can hear until after midnight, and there were industrial aircon units outside the window that you hear 24/7.

Review 28:Location in terms of proximity to centre of Melbourne. Relatively quiet inside the hotel. Bed was comfy.

Review 29:Central to all I had to do. Lots of eating places nearby, transport to and from Spencer St Station (then to Airport) at the end of the street. Felt very safe in the whole environment. Staff very helpful in advising and booking Courtesy bus

Review 30:It looked like nobody had cleaned under the bed for a while - I found a shoe and quite a bit of dust.

Review 31:Nice and central, 24-hour reception, comfortable room.

Review 32:Rooms & facilities very small and dated. Not the type of room you want to spend a lot of time in.Probably an accommodation type better suited to younger, less expectant travelers.

Review 33:Centrally located in Melbourne CBD for leisure activities and hospitality

Review 34:No housekeeping several days in a row, in spite of requesting this. The single cupboard in the room was old and we did not dare to put clothes in it. No safe or mirror in the bedroom.

Review 35:Location only

Review 36:Downside of the location is that the alleyway next to it was very noisy early in the mornings with delivery vehicles and rubbish trucks or something. TV was very small for the room, but this wasn't a big deal for me

Review 37:Room was nice if a bit dank and it is very conveniently located. Staff were friendly and pleasant. Close to a lot of good eating options and amenities.

Review 38:Could do with a microwave oven. Also needs larger tea cups or have some mugs. Could do with light cotton blankets, not everyone likes thick quilts, especially in hot weather.

Review 39:Generally ok. Bathroom small, but satisfactory.

Review 40:Excellent location, pretty good value for city centre hotel. Fairly basic room with uncomfortable bed and windows directly next to a restaurant so pretty noisy until midnight.

Review 41:This place is the pitts had asked for an early check in time not available. check in that wasn't available .Asked to check bags in no secure facility told camera were operating not to worry but wouldn't give a guarantee if bags were stolen.

Review 42:TV was a waste of time as no sound and only 4 channels although not in the room long enough to really bother us

Review 43:Excellent location in Melb cbd and easy to get to free tram service. Close to eateries etc

Review 44:Bedroom could of done with a lick of paint, but was perfectly clean

Review 45:This hotel was in a really central location,Great wifi connection Beds made every morning and fresh towels provided Great shower very powerful

Review 46:If you're lucky enough to get a room with a window, the street noise during the night is terrible - no double glazing.

Review 47:Great location, and clean room

Review 48:Although the bathroom was clean all the furniture marks over the walls made the room seem dirty. Lamp electrical cord fixed with tape - bad OH&S

Review 49:It was central CBD

Review 50:Great location with everything right on your doorstep, trams, shops, restaurants. Great rooms that are serviced daily. Will definitely be staying again next time we are in Melbourne.

Review 51:This place is a fire trap, carpets in corridor are filthy, the beds were clean but the noise from the lane beside the hotel and the room next door was terrible

Review 52:Nothing at all

Review 53:Facilities + cramped room. No secure luggage facilities. Also TV had only 4 free to air stations which is poor for the $169 price.

Review 54:Staff were helpful + close to shops

Review 55:the room and hotel look like they have not been painted for a long time, it was dark nothing like I was expecting for the price I paid. Also first time I have ever been charged for using an Amex, got charged 3.5%, there was even a charge for using Visa (no charge for cash) When I 1st got there my room was not acceptable, but the young man at front desk moved me, so was grateful for that (have never complained about a room, and I have travelled to Melbourne quite a bit)

Review 56:The location was fantastic, bathroom looked reasonably modern, great shower. Staff where quite friendly

Review 57:There was no microwave which I really missed as I stayed there for 6 nights. TV was tiny and had only 4 channels. Walls were very thin and you could hear everything in the next room so bring earplugs. Pillows very low and my neck ached, when I added two pillows it was too high. Also when I went to use the shaving cream there was none there and I really needed it to shave my legs! Young man on reception in the morning only smiled when taking personal phone calls, ignored me and was often outside smoking. A smile and a hello costs nothing. The other staff were lovely however.

Review 58:Fantastic location which was great. So handy to explore Melbourne and its surrounds. The room was spacious, bed wasn't too saggy or too firm. There was a stovetop and saucepans with utensils so if you wanted to do some home cooking you could but would have to eat leftovers cold. Everything was left very clean which I appreciated. Would stay here again despite any negatives because of the location.

Review 59:Lack of hot water, TV wasn't working (broken remote), fittings falling off walls. Very noisy, although it was in noisy CBD/restaurant area & probably would've been in other accommodation too. Take earplugs if you stay to get a good nights sleep.

Review 60:Location was excellent in CBD, with transport & restaurants very close by. Staff were friendly. Rooms were clean and tidy.

Review 61:The room we had looked into a void between buildings, with noisy air conditioning units and restaurant kitchens until late at night. TV was small with only 5 channels.

Review 62:Central location. Close to trains and trams. Easy walking to Bourke St Mall and Melbourne Central for shopping. Lots of dining choices nearby. Hardware Lane is just around the corner.

Review 63:There was nothing I didn't like

Review 64:Location was perfect for what we needed it for and the hotel issurrounded by restaurants and convenience stores. Also the discountedsecure parking just a short walk away was fantastic value!

Review 65:Whilst the room was a little tired it was clean, spacious, all appliances worked, lovely shower with plenty of hot water. Overall I was pleasantly surprised & impressed with the room.

Review 66:The rooms were not very clean. Under the bed was very dusty, the walls had marks all over them, the floor in the shower was not cleaned properly. It is evident that a poor once over job was done.

Review 67:Location was good, close to places like Woolworths and Regent Theatre

Review 68:Not the most modern apartment, but for the price and location could boot complain! A little hard to find when first looking for the hotel.

Review 69:Fantastic location! So many trams close, and perfect for accessing the central sights!

Review 70:Hate International Roast coffee and little cups...mugs would be great!

Review 71:Good location, helpful staff, quick to fix light fault, quick to have room ready after booking change

Review 72:My room was right next to the elevator. Was very noisy. Walls were paper thin. I was with my 17 y/o daughter and we could hear the couple next room having sex very loud!

Review 73:Location was great.

Review 74:It needed a renovation, little outdated. Needed more utencils in the kitchen, shower head had a leak that water would spray out in lots of directions, TV was too small and the reverse cylcle heater was not operating properly

Review 75:It was in a good location. One friendly staff member others not so friendly

Review 76:No bad experience but TV remote would not tranmsmit more than 1 metre from TV Perhaps a larger TV might be more appropriate Large clean bathroom, but perhaps better exhaust and ventilation would be appropriate

Review 77:Location in CBD Very friendly and accommodating staff

Review 78:I went to Melbourne in the winter. I didn't know that there was no heat in the older buildings. So it's not their fault, but that did cut down on my comfort level.

Review 79:I absolutely loved the location. It was central to everything I needed to get to, or at least to the public transport that would get me there.

Review 80:Poor value for money. Should be much cheaper for what is provided. Noisy in the late evenings as people leave nearby clubs. Needs a good makeover. Not all areas clean and notices / signs taped on the walls. Very drab.

Review 81:great location

Review 82:Needs a coat of paint and needs a good clean

Review 83:Staff comfortable clean beds. Location right in city. Large spacious appartment there were 5 of us. Lots of hot water. Warm heaters everywhere.

Review 84:Body soap provided but no face washers My room was not made up. When I complained to reception was told that if I don't ask my room will not be cleaned

Review 85:Heat location

Review 86:Unit needs a good clean and a fresh coat of paint would make a difference.

Review 87:Staff spacious rooms near to CBDs. Near food places and shopping. Clean comfortable beds plenty hot water and clean linen

Review 88:it would be nice to have a microwave in the room to heat up breakfasts, etc.

Review 89:the location to central Melbourne is excellent. the variety of local take out restaurants outside the door of the hotel left us spoilt for choice for dinners and lunches.

Review 90:The rooms need a reno. Curtins are in bad shape, walls need paint and a bit of mould coming through around windows

Review 91:great walking location to everything in the CBD

Review 92:Freezing cold in the room and the heat pump did not work even after numerous requests for someone to please check.

Review 93:Location was really ideal and central

Review 94:I felt that the heater in the rooms didn't go high enough. I could feel a small draft coming in from the window because it wouldn't shut all the way. Also the answering machine when you call the hotel is kind of hard to understand due to the very strong accent.

Review 95:I liked how the hotel is right in the city. It's very easy to locate. Lots of little places to eat just outside the hotel and also the store across the lane way was very convenient.

Review 96:Bathroom very cold window jammed open that we couldn't shut. Bed very hard. Very small room. Paint peeling off walls in bathroom. TV so small you could hardly see anything.

Review 97:Location great. Staff very nice. Shower very good. 3/4 of bathroom done up nice the other 1/4 needed to be done.

Review 98:Doona's on beds were very warm and made it uncomfortable to sleep but it was too cold wihtout a doona

Review 99:Location was excellent and staff very friendly

Review 100:Room could have been cleaner, especially the bathroom and staff a little friendlier. Very noisy and can easily hear people walking through the hallways and people in surrounding rooms as well as plumbing from room above.

Review 101:Location excellent close to trams, Bourke St mall, restaurants and cafes on Hardware Lane.

Review 102:The room is in need of a good refurb. Rusted windows, scratched walls, Couldn't get the TV to work,. Needs a good paint and floor boards creaked. Front rooms are too noisy.

Review 103:Location. Have stayed here once before. The rooms off the lane are better.

Review 104:Staffs were the worst ever. Everyone at the reception was casuals (students). I called the reception when I found that an air conditioner was not working properly. What really frustrated and shocked me was that the female receptionist said that she doesn't know anything and there is no one who can fix it. I kept asking regardless as it was really cold. Finally she said that she is just a casual and doesn't know anything and asked me to call again about 2 hour later. She just wanted to escape the situation and hoped next casual employee could handle this. When I said 'OK', she said 'thank god'. Service was the worst ever. In terms of facilities, never expect that pictures they provide are a true representation of the room you are booking. Totally different. If the picture looks like 7 out of 10, reality is 3 or 4 out of 10. Air conditioner was the worst. Don't ever book a room if you don't like a cold temperature. My short stay was totally ruined and I will never ever book this hotel rooms again.

Review 105:Location was the only thing I should say 'Good'.

Review 106:Very very minor complaint of only 4 TV channels, but hopefully you are too busy in Melbourne for this to be a bother.

Review 107:Very central location. Was in town to see a show and was a 15 minute walk to the Comedy Club. Windows that you can open for fresh air. Room dated but clean.

Review 108:Peeling paint on some of the walls and they were dirty in places. The pillows were lumpy, need replacing. Our bathroom window had a huge crack in it.

Review 109:It was fully self contained, fantastic location.

Review 110:Not sure where the loud music noises were coming from at nights which continued until about 4.00am Thursday to Sunday evenings, although it was not offensive.

Review 111:The Hotel was in a handy location within walking distance to cafes, restaurants, museums, galleries, trams and the train station.

Review 112:first time I have had a room fronting onto the street, very noisy all hours of the night. Noisy from above and next door rooms as well.

Review 113:terrific location, friendly staff, great size room, lovely hot shower. Stay here regularly

Review 114:Fridge tended to freeze food regardless of setting.

Review 115:Studio on top floor had lovely light with large window. Could see the sky above adjacent building with nice privacy from majority opaqued windows. Good amount of space, nice little kitchenette (toaster, kettle, large frypan, small pot, spatula, little fridge), modern bathroom. Saturday night noisy in street & may not be good for those needing dead silence for sleep (not me!!). I would suggest if you aren't into noise at night perhaps stay out of city centre or choose hotel with double glazing.

Review 116:The lights in the bathroom could be brighter- hard for the ladies to put on makeup! ...Or a mirror placed near the window for natural light.

Review 117:A very comfortable stay. A place to rest our head at night. Room service was great. Friendly 24 hour reception!

Review 118:The television didn't have all the television channels on it, so my viewing was limited. It was also a small screen t.v. The fridge was much too small, not enough room to put anything in it. These were the two major faults with the hotel room.

Review 119:It was clean, in a good location, near trams and the train. It was nice and quiet, had a comfortable bed and good bathroom and shower. There were also two hotplates for cooking. The price was very reasonable, so it was fairly good value for the price.

Review 120:A coat of paint and a TV with a larger screen and greater range of channels.

Review 121:Close to most visitor highlights. Friendly reception staff. Room was small but sufficient.

Review 122:Needs a really good clean maybe a paint job and furniture needs updating needs more in the cupboards cupsand mugs small and very little of anything.

Review 123:Let me have an early checkin enough room friendly close to shops

Review 124:The bed, it was very hard and uncomfortable.

Review 125:The room was a generous size, I wasn't expecting the cooking facility which was a bonus. The recently renovated bathroom was clean and excellent shower.

Review 126:The view was to the walls of the building. English of the reception was limited. Suction of air doesn't work at all and was very dirty as well.

Review 127:Nice shower

Review 128:I was given a different bed configuration to what I booked. Staff were accommodating and gave a different room. Not sure if there's an error in the booking.com system or the hotel's system.

Review 129:Great location. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and tidy.

Review 130:It was in a fantastic location, really close to shops, trams and great restaurants and bars. Great value for money and very roomy but the room was a little tired - it could do with a lick of paint!

Review 131:Our very nice room was on the 3rd level. However, the blinds were not thick enough, allowing light through at night. Probably would have been okay for a higher level.

Review 132:Location, friendly staff, very obliging - extended our check-out time by 1 hour at short notice. I would stay there again.

Review 133:The only aspect I did not like about the location is that it is also very near the restaurants and food outlets in the CBD and is very noisy on a Friday night.

Review 134:The location is so convenient for where I needed to go in Melbourne and for how I was travelling.

Review 135:Tea cups were to small!! Not many TV channels.

Review 136:I like the location with great range of foods and express market to get basic needs. It was clean and comfortable. But overall great!

Review 137:Some unnecessary dated furniture...just took up space. The lift seemed a bit rattled but worked fine.

Review 138:Great little kitchenette . Someone always on the desk. Easy walk to everywhere.

Review 139:Actually it's not bad. Just couldn't sleep well because of the bed. The door of the bathroom was broken.

Review 140:Very near China Town, good for shopping.

Review 141:Big pieces of pain and plaster coming off one wall....not good impression....needs attending too urgently

Review 142:Clean room, good bathroom , close to Victoria Market. Good cafes very close, and convenience store across the road.

Review 143:Everything good, not an expensive hotel so met expectations, painting of rooms would be good, it would make a huge difference.

Review 144:Location, value for money, kitchenette, clean sheets and towels, good beds, timber floors, helpful staff
