Reviews for Welcome Hotel in Vík
Review 1:It's very basic which was fine for us but the pillows and sheets were older than I would have liked. Some people won't like the self check in but for us it was no problem.
Review 2:This is a self checkin basic accommodation. The location is walking distance of 3-5 mins to the beach.
Review 3:Not bad but this hotel has a Self checkin which is very different. We wanted a cup of tea but because it's self checkin we didn't know we could get free tea and coffee down the hall.
Review 4:Very comfy beds, good wifi, and location near the ocean we could hear the waves crashing which was great to help you sleep.
Review 5:The price should be same as any other hostel.
Review 6:Easy location. Just turn right on the main road. However, Vik is a small town so with a car the distance from 'downtown' doesn't really matter. No bedbugs and it looks like I still have my organs. Breakfast which was included in the price was excellent. I didn't have any issues with the unusual check in process although the confirmation email with the instruction (attached) took a little longer than expected. Just go to the room (stated in the email) and use the key box combo (stated in the email) to get the room key.
Review 7:It was perfect if there was a kettle and a cups in a room.
Review 8:A room was big, warm, cozy and clean. The location is perfect - 5 min. from the ocean. Easy check-in (we arrive late at night). TV, comfortable bed, interesting interior - everything was great.
Review 9:Great location, especially with the bar/restaurant next door! Room was clean and comfortable, with a great shower. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. Didn't see any staff to be able to pass comment on.
Review 10:No reception/hotel staff on site. Room was so hot and there was no way of adjusting the heating so we had to sleep with the windows open but it was still too hot to even use bedding. The floor of the room was just gravel/pebbles and it was very uncomfortable. The hotel information said their restaurant would be open for dinner but it was closed.
Review 11:During my booking there was the option to choose between a double bed and 2 twin bed. Since we're traveling in 2 friends, we choosed the option with 2 twin beds. When we get to the hotel, there was no room available with 2 twin beds. When asked (via telephone, since there's nobody present on the hotel) the guy just said to me look for somewhere else and hung up. I'll never, ever, ever, ever recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 12:The room seemed very clean but there was a strange odour that we couldn't pinpoint. We got used to it, but it did bother us at first. Also, there were no staff on site at all, which seemed strange for a hotel, but also seems to be common in Iceland. Lastly, breakfast was a bit of a disappointment, even for continental style.
Review 13:The room was very tidy, well decorated, and warm. the location was excellent, within walking distance of the harbour and right next to a tasty farm-to-fork style restaurant.
Review 14:The flooring in the rooms, its like a rough pebbled effect?! not sure what they were thinking when they put this down but its not pleasant underfoot and especially not with bare feet if you get up in the night, also found the room far too hot and no way of altering the temperature yourself so we had to prise window open even though it was pouring with rain and the wind was howling
Review 15:The pub next door and the location is close to the beach
Review 16:It was far too warm. They changed our room before we arrived and didn't inform us.
Review 17:This hotel is walking distance to the beautiful black sand beach, a good value, and included a nice breakfast spread.
Review 18:There is no staff so imagine if something went wrong it would be a problem. The room also had a pebble effect floor that had come loose and was uncomfortable to walk on
Review 19:Nice hotel. A lot better than all the reviews make out. We got sent the code for our room before we went so was easy to find our room and let ourselves in.
Review 20:Don't like the floor in the room as it seems a little bit dirty. Not tea&coffee making facilities that I had to go out to make tea or get hot water.
Review 21:Very nice location very closed to the beach. Delicious breakfast. Nice reception via the phone.
Review 22:There seemed to be only one guy on hand to deal with everything. There was an issue with our room and it took ages to sort out because he had to make some phone calls to get an answer. I didn't think it was fair on him. Also for guests to get assistance they had to make a phone call from reception and sometimes the number didn't even work.
Review 23:I enjoyed breakfast and had a good night sleep. Short walk to the beach, restaurants and supermarket.
Review 24:Car park of the Hotel is quite packed and limited but it is quite easy to find a parking spot around it. No one to ask something. Reception desk is automated and humanless.
Review 25:Compact and great location
Review 26:We only say the guy who cooked us lovely pancakes but didn't seem very happy.
Review 27:Nice room, easy access to the accommodation, good breakfast with freshly cooked pancakes - lovely.
Review 28:There is no staff for checking in. You use a telephone to let them know when you arrive and are given a code to get your key. This requires a credit card to reserve the room and eliminates the opportunity to pay cash for the room. A little pricey for the facility.
Review 29:The location was good. The facilities were clean and adequate. Not a bad place to stay. The breakfast was good. Although a little pricey for the facility, I would stay there again.
Review 30:The underfloor heating which was far too hot and not able to be controlled.
Review 31:the location in Vik near to the black beach - the handy restaurant next door
Review 32:The worst thing was that our heat was not working in our room. They said they would bring us a little heater but after 3 hours I called again and they finally brought it. Altho breakfast hours started at 8am they didn't open until 8:10 and there was no coffee until after we checked out. It's a little difficult to check in because there is no front desk, they have a box with a combination to get in your room
Review 33:It had a really nice shower
Review 34:No staff available to welcome travellers and give advice. No coffee/tea making facilities in room.
Review 35:Hotel was quiet. Facilities were reasonable. Breakfast was fine.
Review 36:Only one person working out front seeing to the self service breakfast. So had to wait for coffee etc to be replaced.
Review 37:Room was clean and very comfortable . Good breakfast.
Review 38:The location is excellent. It is only 2 mins from the famous Vik beach which was easy to go to for dawn. The breakfast was good and the checking in was straight forward using the key code that was given in advance. The Wifi was good.
Review 39:The checkin process was very strange. There is a phone downstairs where you call a number, say your name, and they give you a 4 digit code to open a box next to your hotel door with a key inside. The room was also very small for the value.
Review 40:Breakfast and location
Review 41:Might be better to have more twin rooms - triple room was too tight for three people with luggage
Review 42:fantastic showers, nice breakfasts, convenient location
Review 43:very very expensive but its at a beautiful location steps away from the black sand beach where you can see tons of puffins!
Review 44:not as bad as the reviews state the breakfast is good staff is friendly i had no problems really
Review 45:Feel the price was a little little high, but there aren't a lot of options in the area.
Review 46:The newer part of the hotel where we stayed was nice. Simple room but nice. Breakfast was great. There wasn't any staff (outside of the guy who prepped breakfast) so be sure to call/email ahead to get the key door code so you don't have to deal with calling when you arrive. It makes it much easier to get into your room, especially if you're arriving after 8 pm
Review 47:We stayed in a 4-person family room with four adults. The room is the same size at the lower priced 2-person Queen bed rooms but with two single beds crammed in. It was nice but cramped.
Review 48:I liked the ability to check in with a code regardless of arrival time. The breakfast was quite nice. The room was nice and clean. Hotels in Vik are comically expensive so this place is a relative bargain.
Review 49:Wifi signal sometimes weak (in the room), only one sort of bread and jam for breakfast (the rest such as ham, cheese, cereals, etc was ok!)
Review 50:Easy self check in, nice own bathroom, comfortable beds, filling and fresh breakfast
Review 51:Vik did not have as much as we expected and it was strange that the hotel didn't have a front desk or staff there working. We checked in by making a call from a phone there and it was not as welcoming or fun as other places that we stayed.
Review 52:It was clean, comfortable, and the breakfast was good.
Review 53:The exterior of the hotel is bleak ! The breakfast attendant could be faster and polite.
Review 54:Despite the negative reviews , we booked this hotel ( in April 2015 ) , because it was the only one available , to Aug. 3 , in and around VIK . Furthermore , it was by far the most expensive hotel in Iceland . Eventually, though , for us it was not a bad experience ... we immediately withdrew the keys , the room was small , but we adapted and breakfast in the morning was good and plentiful .
Review 55:No staff and very 'unfriendly' feel to it. Rooms were dated and outside looks like an old warehouse. Breakfast was weak.
Review 56:Located in a nice convenient spot.
Review 57:no service: no reception, breakfast only starts at 8 am (if you're Lucky, mostly door opens 5 or 10 minutes later), the complementary coffee/hot water were 2 cans for 22 rooms: of course they were empty in no time and not refilled. Price is outrageous for the value you get. Restaurant was closed although signs said it was open for lunch and dinner. Surrounding of hotel looks poor. Cover sheet for mattress damaged upon arrival and not replaced for 3 days...very noisy entrance door: we were in the room above it and heard it every time slam.
Review 58:the location is convenient internet was working well, large choice of TV programs
Review 59:Check in is a bit complicated. You need a pincode, there is no stuff there just a tekephone. The building outside is not nice
Review 60:We got a new renovated room with a big bed and a small but nice bathroom.
Review 61:Very small room for four people. The aspect was of a cheap not-so-clean hostel (everything was clean though). A very small variety at the breakfast. Too expensive for what it offers.
Review 62:Good location, very close to the Blac Beach.
Review 63:This was by far the most expensive and the worst hotel we stayed at in Iceland. Our room was tiny - it may be big enough for one, maybe even two people, but three - no way! Our beds were squashed together, and because there was no air in the room, my bed was right under the open window. My pillow should have been thrown away 5 years ago, it was so old and 'bumpy'. But there was no-one in attendance to ask for a replacement pillow! Bathroom was in a terrible state - moldy, hooks broken (I have pictures to prove). There isn't even a chair to sit in this hotel's 'lobby', those couches you see in the hotel picture are a lie - the couches are in the restaurant, which opens at 8 am and closes right after breakfast. Breakfast was another story - there is only ONE guy trying to cook and server everyone! I asked for a napkin, and was told 'we don't have any'. He served a few pancakes, which were gone in a matter of seconds. Please don't stay in this dump. If there is nothing else in Vik, just keep going. Highway 1 is nice, and you'll be in the next town in a few minutes. I can't believe I paid $325 for this! The owners should be ashamed of themselves for this extortion. I hope booking.com stops using this property.
Review 64:absolutely nothing
Review 65:4 twin beds crammed in a room with 2 chairs and nothing else. Most expensive night in Iceland. We were there for 11 nights. Electronic check in. Never saw a hotel person until breakfast.
Review 66:Nothing!
Review 67:This place was without question the worst value for money I have everencountered in a hotel. It was very expensive - exceeding the cost of afive star hotel in some of the most expensive cities in the world. Yetthe rooms were tiny and cramped, the furniture and fixtures were cheap, old and run-down, and staff nonexistent. In place of a reception, theyhave lock-boxes outside each room and they e-mail you the code a fewdays before your arrival. The breakfast is stale, selection limited, andthey quickly run out of essentials like milk. There is one person in thekitchen in the mornings, but is unable to restock the breakfast. This is a cheap hostel with minimum comfort and unattractive design. That would be OK if it was priced accordingly, but they take advantage of the tourists and charge extremely high prices for substandard accommodation. My advice is to avoid this place if at all possible.
Review 68:Nothing
Review 69:What a scam. There was no one at the reception.when we arrived around18h30. Others were also waiting. We called with the phone at the desk;no one answered.. We waited for over one hour.but no one.showed up. Sowe decided to find another B&B and were lucky to find a room. A fewdays later, after a trek, we stopped to see the manager but found thereception closed once again. They did however debit our card uponreservation rather than on the day of the reservation, (for a servicethey did not provide). We now have to file with our credit card....Please avoid at all cost.
Review 70:Location was difficult to find. In town, but facing a warehouse (not the pretty view you see on the picture). There was no reception, no staff. We booked this really expensive hotel expecting some service - there was none. Restaurant was closed in the evening (even though the info posted at the hotel listed dinner hours); there was no one there to give any info. We were hoping to relax in the evening and eat dinner at the hotel, instead ended up walking around town in the rain and cold looking for a place to eat with two small kids. Most restaurants in town had long waits. Room was tiny - 4 beds squeezed into a tiny little room, with no room for the suitcases. Tiny shower. Tea/coffee making facilities were on the floor - not in the room. Room needs a new paint job. It would have been ok for one third of the price, but not for close to $400 a night they charged us for a tiny outdated room w no service. This was the worst place we stayed at on our 10 day trip around Iceland (we stayed in hotels, apartments, cottages, cabins, etc.) The best thing about this hotel was leaving the next morning. If you're staying in Vik, stay somewhere else.
Review 71:Room was clean though very beat up and outdated. Breakfast was decent with nice staff though they could not provide any info on the hotel itself.
Review 72:Compared to other places in Iceland it was way overpriced.
Review 73:The room was rather basic (although with a private bathroom), otherwise no major complaints except for the price. The breakfast was good and the hotel was conveniently located.
Review 74:No one was available for check in! 3 families waited for over an hour in the evening to get a staff member to check us in and give us our room keys. There was a note - to call for help - no one ever answered the phone. Breakfast (included in the stay) was not provided. There was a note stating that breakfast would start at 8 am - we waited till 8:30 am, then left. Again - no one available for check out. Did not see a single staff member other than after a long wait - at the initial time of check in!
Review 75:Convenient location
Review 76:No spare roll of toilet paper on day 1. Liquid hand soap from the local grocery store. Door handle of bathroom fell off. the stone floors in the rooms while pretty are uncomfortable to walk on. Insufficient number of forks at breakfast on day 1 and coffee cups on day 2. Ran out of pancakes within 15 minutes of being opned for breakfast. Extremely expensive for the quality, even by Icelandic standards.
Review 77:Good location. Comfortable bed and covers. Convenient parking lot. Self service check in worked well.
Review 78:Auto check-in is ridiculous! No person around, just check in by phone! The bathroom in the hall was FILTHY. Our room was right under the front door, which needed to be slammed to shut right, so we were jarred awake several times in the night. The coffee service in the upper hall hadn't been serviced in a long time. The man at the hotel's restaurant was sullen and unhelpful. Many of the breakfast offerings ran out before the people did. This place needs a lot of work to make it a good place to stay. But the lack of a person on duty was the worst part, and a guest's first impression.
Review 79:Ease of parking. Next door to really yummy restaurant (not the one in the hotel). Grocery store just a short walk down the street.
Review 80:They didnt know we were even booked there, even though i had reconfirmed my stay a week before. 3 beds in a cramped room for two people.wifi didnt work.
Review 81:Location was good
Review 82:The hotel has no facilities and we have to carry our luggage up to the 2nd floor. However due to the summer peak, we just have no choice and had to get whatever available and pay the high rent.
Review 83:Good location. Within working distance to the black sand beach and the short driving distance to the hexagon pillar. Also next to the information office and a good restaurant.
Review 84:Room is fine, even though hotel doesn't look good from the outside and is not placed in a nice position. There is no check-in, just a phone to call... and even there they are not friendly. Worst thing is however the incredibly high price compared to what is offered!
Review 85:It was the only hotel with an available room in the area.
Review 86:The floors are like small cobblestones so it is quite painful to walk around barefoot. Also the shower room is a wetroom and I inadvertently flooded the bathroom when I had a shower.
Review 87:I was a little worried after reading reviews but this place was fine for a 1 night stay in Vik on my way to Jokulsarlon. It was clean and didn't have any issues with the checkin/out process. Would stay again if I was in the area!
Review 88:This was the worst experience we had in Iceland. There was no one working the front desk, just a sign to call a number, which we did hundreds of times and got busy signals until finally one went through. Slow wifi, bad beds, bad sheets, bad towels, bad everything and the most we spent for a hotel the whole time we were there.
Review 89:I liked nothing.
Review 90:This property isn't on GPS, which is indicative of what a rundown, decrepit place it is. The picutre o the website ofthe black sand beach is correct, but the hotel looks at a warehouse. Based on the Information Center in Vik, which is virtually right next door, this hotel has divorced itself from the community, and is an outlier. Ridiculous price for what you get.
Review 91:There is no reception, so they e-mail you a room number and code for the key box next to the door. My first e-mail did not actually have the information, and I was already in Iceland. They did promptly reply when I wrote back, and the key box was easy. However, another couple were in the lobby area when we arrived, and their code didn't work. The two telephone numbers were both busy. We waited with them as they repeatedly tried to call. Finally we suggested that they e-mail, and they did get a response. There are many stairs in the building - it's like a labyrinth - we had to go up and then down flights to get to our room.
Review 92:The room was spotless and comfortable. Breakfast was also nice.
Review 93:No staff contact; Tea and coffee facilities had run dry on arrival; Breakfast was bedlam - dishes everywhere, stocks ran out, one poor guy left to run breakfast completely (felt sorry for him); Seriously overpriced - worst value for money on whole trip around Iceland; So bad we had to laugh really! Won't forget it in a hurry though! Restaurant at hotel closed at dinner time. Management need to get to grips with the place urgently - for the price it was day light robbery! If in Vik, this should be your last resort (bed for a night only).
Review 94:The restaurant next door to the hotel is excellent for dinner.
Review 95:No Staff exzeptionell for breakfast but no service at all, a poor choice of food, Internet was not working until late at night, parking lot run down, no dinner although advertised
Review 96:At leaset it was clean
Review 97:Beds were a bit too narrow for adults.
Review 98:Hotel was very close to a really good restaurant. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful ... But don't leave it too late to go down.
Review 99:Check in was terrible as no one was at the hotel to check us in and thephone number listed did not work. Also when we checked in they had norecord that we had already paid for the room. Very bad experience
Review 100:Musty carpeted room and unemptied trash bins. Mediocre breakfast withtoast, no fresh bread. But the worst was arriving late (first emailmentioned 8 pm check in but second email with notice about self check indid not) and I couldn't open the attachment with the code to releasethe key from the lock box and the two phone numbers provided went fromringing unanswered to unavailable. We finally got a rather delayed anddisgruntled response via email and eventually I was able to get a friendto open email attachment. But for self check in to mean that no human isavailable if a problem arises and at that price???!! Unconscionable!
Review 101:One room was clean in basement with pebble floors but other room wascarpeted and musty and the trash cans hadn't been emptied.
Review 102:No kettles in rooms. No reception desk - keys are in lock boxes outside rooms and code is emailed a few days beforehand. Restaurant is advertised as open - but its only open for breakfast. Ive stayed here before 3 years ago - but its gone downhill under "Welcome's" control, and it looks tired now.
Review 103:Hotel is in centre of Vik so its convenient.
Review 104:The floor in the room was made a small stones - wear sandals/ shoes inside!
Review 105:The breakfast was excellent, great location in town and nice clean rooms. Quirky hotel! Just what we needed.
Review 106:I couldn't open the attachment which had the room/pin details and then when I arrived and called them they advised a room already taken - very awkward. Very basic room and overpriced
Review 107:Ummm...
Review 108:The Welcome Hotel did not welcome us. In fact, the reception desk was unmanned . A sign gave directions on how to obtain the key to our room and offered a telephone number to call if assistance was needed. When I called a voice told me how to proceed. When we got into the room there was no phone. The only way to get in touch with a staff member was to hunt for one. Despite a sign saying that their restaurant was open it was not. Rapping on the door yielded no response. (Incidentally, I am 81 years old and in good health. However, if I had needed help in getting my heavy suitcase upstairs none would have been available.)
Review 109:Location was central
Review 110:Our booking was not registered when we came to the Hotel. After sometime we got a room. It was frustrating that the confirmed bokningwasn't ok.
Review 111:No hot water for the 2 nights I was there in mid May. They claimed there had been a regional problem with pipes but the adjacent restaurant had had no issues. Now reading other comments, it seems like this is an ongoing maintenance issue they aren't addressing (whilst continuing to charge hotel prices - even with a booking.com discount this is not cheap accommodation)
Review 112:I`m alergic and I need more air in room.
Review 113:Very nice place. rooms very clean and nicely decorated. breakfast tasty. hotel located three minutes at the beach. Possible late arrival by prior arrangement by telephone
Review 114:Everything : from the beginning to the end, including the dirty cups being left in the corridor. No breakfast before 8 and no way of having a hot drink before that .... and much much more
Review 115:Absolutly nothing
Review 116:Rooms very small, with not much room for suitcases. No staff to meet in reception, and the phone number left to contact staff is either busy, or nobody answers for ages. Curtains very thin and in summer has no block out features - so if sunlight wakes you, you won't like this.
Review 117:Rooms clean, but small. Good strong wifi. Good breakfast to start the day.
Review 118:no hot water, we called many times the number for assistance but nothing happened. The bathroom was a bit dirty with dead flies in the shower
Review 119:close to the shops and main activities Nice breakfast
Review 120:It was a little strange that there was no physical person to check in or out with. The phone connection to a person was easy to use though.
Review 121:The beds were nice, a good well looked after room and bathroom.
Review 122:Didn't see anyone at all which was ok as the facilities were all fine but would have been nice to say hello to anyone who was running the Hotel.
Review 123:Good breakfast
Review 124:The space is a bit small.
Review 125:The location is nice, and one gets a street view with the mountain as background in our case. The room is small, but cozy. Breakfast is descent.
Review 126:When we arrived our room had been given to someone else. No reception but able to phone through on a free phone to get the room sorted out. Access to the room sent by email, you are told your room number and the code to the key press to retrieve the key for the room-very impersonal.
Review 127:Nice spacious room with private bathroom. Availability to have free hot drinks. Free WiFi Adequate breakfast
Review 128:Little bit expensive, but no big deal. We enjoyed our stay here.
Review 129:Welcome Hotel is easy to find, while Vik isn't that big. It contains a self-service check-in which you will receive by e-mail and is easy to use. Room was big enough for the three of us and we had our own shower and toilet. Breakfast the next morning was allright, you have a selection of bread, meat, cereal and hot drinks. If you want to have a meal, in the summertime you can use the restaurant downstairs. Otherwise trey the restaurant next door, great food!
Review 130:Room had no heater. No kettle to boil water in room. Hot shower suddenly went off when one of us were using it. Not a good place to stay in ice cold winter. There is no receptionist available, only by phone.
Review 131:Nice restaurant 30m from hotel. Good location.
Review 132:This is a recurring theme in Iceland bu the restaurant does not take cash!! Don't take much foreign currency to Iceland - use plastic.
Review 133:Comfortable room / nice breakfast
Review 134:Everything was perfect.
Review 135:I just want to say how much we liked the gentleman who works in the hotel and looks after the restaurant and also helps guests if needed. He was very friendly and polite, helped with our luggage and made an excellent dinner. He made one of the best dishes we've eaten while in Iceland. In the morning despite having everything out you can wish for breakfast he made pancakes for us which were delicious. The room was really cosy and clean. There was free wifi but without any password so the phone just connected straight away which made it so easy and hassle free.
Review 136:TV didn't work, and tea facilities outside the room.
Review 137:Breakfast was so delicious, so many choices in buffet. WiFi is good. Free parking available, there are 2 very nice restaurants around the hotel.
Review 138:It's a minimal hotel, which would be fine if the price matched the facilities. The restaurant is pricey, especially considering the mediocre quality of the food. The gas station grill is probably a better choice.
Review 139:It's difficult to find hotels on the south coast of Iceland open in winter and this is one of the few available.
Review 140:we showed up and there didn't seem to be anyone there that knew we were guests who had booked reservations. It appeared that we are to check-in by calling a number with the phone in the lobby, but one of the staff members was more than willing to help us out.
Review 141:The restaurant downstairs has a large enough selection to feed picky eaters. The room was clean and the place was very quiet. Breakfast was included in our payment and it was a delicious buffet with much-needed coffee.
The Fine Print
