Reviews for Hotel Katla Hofdabrekka
Review 1:-no bacon or scrambled eggs for breakfast -small food portions for expensive dinner (although it was delicious)
Review 2:-friendly and accommodating hotel staff (our party of 4 booked separately but we were able to get rooms in the same building) -clean and cozy rooms -great wifi -fresh and delicious food at the hotel restaurant -fresh waffles for breakfast -warm and cozy feeling throughout
Review 3:Nothing, perfect...
Review 4:Great location just outside of Vilk, fantastic scenery all around, very comfortable and well equipped rooms, friendly helpful and attentive staff.
Review 5:A little impersonal - geared towards large tour groups. Buffet breakfast not very exciting, but good.
Review 6:Nice location on the foot of a mountain. Hot pot (jacuzzi) to wind down before dinner.
Review 7:On the first day, we got a room which is cold even with the heater on at maximum for the whole night. We changed to the other room on the second day, and it is much better.
Review 8:We tried the dinner buffet, the roast lamb and salmon are very tasty. The hot tub is nice, but it is small, and sometimes can be crowded. Breakfast is very nice, they have waffle machines, and you can make yourself a fresh waffle.
Review 9:Hotel Katla was incredible! The staff were amazing, the rooms were nice and the hot tub and sauna were a perfect way to end the day. We loved it so much we stayed here a second night on our way back to Reykjavik. Thank you to Inga and co for being so amazing!
Review 10:Wonderful, friendly staff. Arrived late around 9pm (called ahead) and was able to order a bowl of soup each. It was delicious and kind of the staff to still serve us, just as the kitchen closed
Review 11:Hot tub heater broken so water was luke warm at best. Noisy tour groups early in the morning.
Review 12:Fairly large hotel not far from vik. Restaurant and bar on site. Not far from the ring road. Decent enough room with all required facilities.
Review 13:I cancelled room for the first of two nights only just 24 hours before due to unforeseen circumstances and was charged for the full two days. I had dinner credited but really that's still over £100 overcharged! I feel if a small business such as this wishes for repeat business, they should be more accommodating to their guests... Mould in bathrooms, and lights out in other room! Won't be returning!
Review 14:Food was average, rooms recently done up, clean and large size.
Review 15:No way to dry clothes, or boots after hiking on ice. Room doesn't have heater. Changing room by hot tab is freezing cold and no extra towels. Food and service at restaurant was terrible (for money we spent). I wouldn't recommend eating there.
Review 16:Great location. Reception person was excellent, very accommodative.
Review 17:Loved the entire hotel (which is pretty large and has separate buildings). The breakfast was amazing - great variety and they had 2 waffle irons. The restaurant was beautiful. We had the Katla pizza and the mushrooms soup, both really delicious. The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated.
Review 18:The building is so tightly built that out breathe condensed and puddled on the sill and I felt guilty
Review 19:Scenery is lovely, people, including staff were to a person, friendly and efficient. The food at the restaurant was great and I enjoyed the hot pool and sauna
Review 20:Shower water wasn't very hot but that may have been because there were quite a few big groups staying at the same time as us.
Review 21:Great restaurant with wonderful service and very professional demeanor. A geothermal hot tub and sauna (the sauna closes at night).
Review 22:The only not so great thing was the thin walls...sound seemed to travel quite a bit.
Review 23:Beautiful facility, we were surprised by a free upgrade to a very spacious room. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was delicious and had lots of variety. The room finishes were beautiful, and the bed was very comfortable.
Review 24:The room was a bit small, compared to other apartments we rented for a similar price.
Review 25:Nice personnel, they were very welcoming and the breakfast was good too.
Review 26:- Unlucky for us there was a tour bus at that night, full of school girls. So the sauna/ pool are full. - We can hear anything from next door.
Review 27:- We booked 15 mins before check-in, no problem. - Friendly check-in staff, restaurant/ bar staff. - Little bar area with comfy sofa. - Dinner and breakfast was great with information given clearly on everything, boil egg, waffle, fish oil, etc. - Cocktail made from Birch is very good.
Review 28:First room we were placed into hadn't been cleaned. Wait staff in restaurant not attentive, food a bit overpriced (even for Iceland). Small shower. Too many lights on site for Aurora Borealis viewing. Dated decor.
Review 29:Convenient location, warm room, TV (3 channels). 2nd room was clean. Front desk person was very nice and apologetic about the problems with our first room.
Review 30:Large, clean modern room with heated floors, friendly staff, good restaurant with excellent breakfast buffet. Large picture windows for viewing the northern lights.
Review 31:Triple room was cosy, except the lights were too dim for my liking and make the room feels "old".
Review 32:Awesome restaurant serving great lamb and trout. Friendly staff and a friendly black dog. I love the buffet breakfast (you will be spoilt for choices) and they even catered for gluten-free bread for my breakfast - a big plus point to me for any hotel that makes the effort to do so. I would recommend this place to stay and also eat at their restaurant.
Review 33:The only down side is comparatively with the other intimate places we stayed. It is much bigger than a lot of hotels so feels a little less personal. We were also unable to use the hot tub as it is quite small for the number of guests there. No real faults with the place at all, we had a great time.
Review 34:The location is perfect, it is just a 2 minute drive from Vik but is in an alcove between two cliffs which shelters you from the lights of the town. This is perfect for northern lights spotting which we were very fortunate to see. Very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast is great too.
Review 35:our room window was facing the parking lot and there was a big light outside that made it hard to sleep. also there was a lots of northern lights that evening and no one offered to warn the customers so we missed it. would have been nice !
Review 36:the room was nice and the staff friendly.
Review 37:If you don't like tongue and groove wood interior, then this is not the hotel for you, but don't be put off by the decoration.
Review 38:Spacious layout. Good food both at dinner and breakfast. Breakfast was well organised, especially as there was a school coach party staying in the hotel. Staff very attentive. Excellent position
Review 39:A very welcoming hotel with excellent facilities. breakfast and dinner were of a very good standard. the room was large with a large bathroom and good in house features
Review 40:Room was boiling hot. Couldn't find a way to cool it down. Hot tub full of group of lads (maybe school trip) so couldn't get in. Breakfast ok but nothing special. Would have preferred something hot.
Review 41:All room requests fulfilled (quiet, nice view, double bed) Food in the restaurant was nice.
Review 42:Staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions about the Vic area. Ocean view from room was nice. Delicious Icelandic breakfast. Heated ceramic tile floors was an added surprise.
Review 43:Had to get tea and coffee from reception. Would be better if tea bags and coffee were already in the room.
Review 44:Good room size Friendly customer service Complimentary coffee and tea Nice breakfast.
Review 45:I mostly liked the fact that the Hotel is very close to the main road and also the City of Vik. Is a perfect stop when visiting the south of Iceland. You can expect good breakfast.
Review 46:If you're a light sleeper, bring some ear plugs. The roof is metal, so if it's raining (and supposedly this area is the rainiest spot in Iceland), the noise of rain on the roof might keep you awake. Also, while the dinner was wonderful, our server, Lucia, failed to bring the soup we ordered, then brought the wrong dessert, which was delicious but not what we ordered.
Review 47:Hotel Katla was a pleasant surprise. We stayed there under emergency conditions--torrential rain and winds kept us from getting to our original destination, and we turned into Hotel Katla in desperation. The room was lovely, very comfortable, and the hotel's restaurant was superb, both for dinner and for breakfast.
Review 48:Everything was great
Review 49:The hotel and staff could not have been better - the facilities were great, the location was brilliant and the value for money was excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to others. The lady on reception made us feel incredibly welcome and took a good 20 minutes to show us on several maps what local sights we should visit.
Review 50:Unfortunately, the hot tub was not quite warm enough to sit in for very long -- we all felt quite cold after only 5-10 minutes (and that was only in autumn)! We had hoped that since the hotel did not offer any self-catering facilities that we would be able to eat a reasonably-priced dinner there. Unfortunately the buffet was incredibly expensive -- much moreso than you would expect from a hotel at this price point.
Review 51:The staff at the front desk were friendly. Also, the hot tub and sauna were nice for relaxing after a long day of driving. The hotel is also in a great location for exploring Vík as well as the Katla Geopark.
Review 52:We liked so much that we stayed another night there. Although very isolated, it offers a warm infrastructure, providing all guests' needs. The restaurant food is delicious, both at breakfast and dinner, and the staff is very efficient and helpful. The room is nice and cozy. It was a pleasant surprise after a long day trip.
Review 53:Food
Review 54:Beautiful staff, nice main lodge to relax in. Rooms were adequate, showers so tiny. Buffet was dreadful but you are not there for the food hopefully.
Review 55:Nothing.
Review 56:Great staff, really good food, the breakfast was fantastic, as was dinner. Great hot tub and sauna; clean, comfortable, with large rooms, good wifi and TV (should you want them), nice relaxed communal seating areas, plenty to see and do in the area and good shops etc. locally. We had views of the sea from our room, very conveniently placed and reasonably priced.
Review 57:Evening menu (buffet dinner) seemed overpriced to us so we drove to Vik instead.
Review 58:Nice hotel. Offers a lot of facilities which we did not use (Sauna, etc.). Room was clean and quiet.
Review 59:The room/bathroom was quite small even for two people.
Review 60:Nice hotel, with views of a small lake and a few mountains. Good courteous and helpful staff. The room was completely made of wood - an interesting feel to it. The lobby was quite comfortable with nice couches, wifi and a view outside.
Review 61:The hotel was clean, comfortable and just right for the surrounding area. It had Icelandic charm, but wasn't over the top. The rooms were adorable and had everything we needed for our stay. The heated floors were a nice touch! It was definitely the highlight of all the accommodations we stayed at around Iceland. The value was great as well! We looked into staying at several places, and it was the best rate at a high level of quality. Loved this place!!
Review 62:Member of staff not the friendliness. Put up a fuss when we asked to pay for room on separate cards (nowhere else that we stayed in Iceland had any problems with this request). Dinner options expensive.
Review 63:En suite. Hot shower. Comfortable beds. Rooms in cabin structures. Great buffet breakfast. Sauna. Beautiful location
Review 64:Would of like a kettle in the room so we could of made a hot drink after being in the cold outside for northern lights.
Review 65:Convenient mid-way point to stop by for a night as we were travelling from Reykjavik to the glacier lagoon. We saw some amazing northern lights here. They got confused with our booking and gave us a twin room instead of a double room, they did fix that quickly after going back to the reception and speaking to them - would of helped if they had a phone we could just dial though.
Review 66:Friendly and helpful staff; clean and well-kept facilities. Outdoor hot tub and sauna are great, even if undersized for the number of guests in the hotel.
Review 67:The hotel had a weird layout for an establishment located in a foul weather environment. The lobby and restaurant were in a different building than the rooms, so visitors had to walk from building to building through high wind and rain to visit the restaurant. That was not always fun.
Review 68:The free breakfast and friendly, helpful staff were great.
Review 69:Rooms are in outbuildings, which is fine except if you are the only couple not on the massive coach trip you're sharing the building with. Very noisy.
Review 70:Really nice, clean hotel, big rooms, great breakfast, good location near black sand beaches and nice staff.
Review 71:We got in late, around 9pm, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They pointed out the amenities on the property, including a great outdoor spa. The breakfast was good and the view of the ocean in the morning was amazing. I would stay there again!
Review 72:Although the decor in the rooms looks dated, don't be put off by the photos as the rooms were clean, very comfortable and you had everything you needed.
Review 73:Quiet location, but easily accessible from Vik. Breakfast was plentiful and of a high standard with lots of choice of both Icelandic and European dishes from the buffet. Although arrived during a power cut, Reception staff were very helpful in allocating us our rooms.
Review 74:This hotel seems designed around the idea of doing the minimum. The bedding and furniture is beyond dated. The included breakfast is very basic. If you have the misfortune to have the buffet dinner there, you'll be treated to an exercise in poorly prepared dishes. They're just going through the motions. And it shows.
Review 75:The location is great. The place has the capacity to be something better.
Review 76:Some of the wait staff are completely indifferent. Room was behind the main building in the smallest section. The best sections were reserved for the busses and their guests. The first impression of the room is: did we get dropped into a sleasy hourly rental motel. Not a good impression.
Review 77:Big place, easy to find. Some staff are very friendly.
Review 78:A bit pricy and far from the village, however its got everything you need.
Review 79:The breakfast was awesome. Hot tub and Sauna facilities to relax and unwind.
Review 80:overpriced for the quality of the accommodations. Definitely paying for convenience.
Review 81:Good location, stopping point on the way to the glacier lagoon from Reykjavik.
Review 82:Staff were very friendly and polite. The twin room was exactly what we needed. There was also a very nice hot tub that was great in the evenings waiting for the Northern Lights
Review 83:Beautiful hotel! I was shocked how big our room was and bathroom as well! Excellent breakfast where you can make your own fresh waffles. We were more than happy with our stay!
Review 84:It's picky but the big wooden block on the key makes it hard to open the door without making a bit of noise!
Review 85:Really friendly and passionate staff. The room looked newly fitted and was nicely colourful with everything we needed for out stay. Location was very close to the route 1.
Review 86:This was the only hotel we could find with a private bathroom for a reasonable price in this area - it relied on that a bit. Dinner was an expensive buffet which we declined in favour of visiting an amazing restaurant in Vik itself. Whilst we can't comment on the dinner buffet, the breakfast was lacking - there was no real hot food and everything was sugary.
Review 87:the location just outside Vik is nice and the main building (foyer / breakfast room) is lovely. Later in our holiday we visited thakgill (14km up a gravel road behind the hotel) and wished we stayed in the really cute cabins for a similar price (both a negative and a positive)
Review 88:The hotel caters for large parties so can get busy. Bedding was worn and the room had no net curtains so we had to have the curtains closed.
Review 89:Although this is what I class as a basic hotel ie. very similar to a Travel Lodge. The room was clean with satisfactory. We ate in the restaurant which served a buffet and was good value for money. The hotel is easy to reach being just off of the main road.
Review 90:What a little gem! This was the perfect place to spend a night while traveling through Iceland. The hotel was much more modern and updated than I was expecting with all of the conveniences to make our stay very comfortable. All of the employees were warm and welcoming and went out of their way to make us feel right at home! We had the buffet dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant and both were very delicious with a variety of choices. The dinner buffet was pricey, but food in Iceland is expensive. It was nice to be able to relax in the hot tub on site after a cold and rainy day of sightseeing.
Review 91:Buffet dinner not replenished, get in before the coach parties..
Review 92:Remote setting with multiple blocks of rooms on the property., quet and peacefull. Great hot tub and sauna.
Review 93:The staff were great - very friendly and accommodating. The facilities are, like most in Iceland, a bit on the austere side, but perfectly fine and well maintained; and, I was pleasantly surprised that they had workout facilities. The location, though not in the downtown, turned out to be much better than expected. In fact, we were initially trying to go to a different hotel because we thought it was close to town, but this one turned out to be closer. Plus, the area around this hotel is beautiful and it's a very quick drive to downtown Vik and the nearby sites (Black Sand Beach, etc.). Breakfast was a buffet, and was fine; great tasting waffles and good coffee. I would absolutely stay there again.
Review 94:Really friendly and helpful staff at the reception. The rooms are big and the beds are really comfortable. The hotel is a short drive from Vík, with a beautiful lava beach and cliffs where Puffins have nests during the season.
Review 95:The wifi was spotty but I didn't come to Iceland for the internet so I didn't mind
Review 96:The lady who checked us in was very helpful and offered good suggestions for our touristy type questions (how do we find puffins...her description was dead on and helped us spot a few despite it being late in the season) The breakfast was also the best we had all trip. There was plenty to choose from with plenty of Icelandic foods as well as some good ol waffles. The hot tub was also wonderful after a long day of hiking,
Review 97:Hot tub was not hot.
Review 98:Great breakfast! There was something for all tastes. The home-made soup and bread was excellent. This was the perfect way to start out our trip to Iceland.
Review 99:The only complaint is that the hot tub was not very warm.
Review 100:The facility was clean and the staff was very helpful. The food was excellent with a wonderful variety of home made items.
Review 101:Nil. Perfect if you are driving.
Review 102:The staff are very helpful. Due to unforeseen circumstance, we arrive at the hotel very late at round 11pm. The staff kindly agreed to wait for us and provided helpful tips and suggestions for the next day.
Review 103:It was high season (end of August), and the location seemed to be priced accordingly.
Review 104:The breakfast was among the best of our trip, I highly recommend it even if it comes extra. Internet via wifi was very fast, it worked fine in rooms even if in some hotel descriptions it was mentioned as "public areas" only.
Review 105:Although the breakfast was good, the buffet dinner we had in the hotel on arrival was not great - limited vegetarian options, very expensive, and not good value for money.
Review 106:The location was perfect for exploring the South coast, the staff were really friendly and attentive, and the room and facilities were clean and tidy.
Review 107:Nothing negative!
Review 108:Excellent location - good for a 2-3 night stay to see all attractions in the area; quiet; clean; nicely decorated large rooms; nice bathroom/shower/towels... Very accommodating staff... Superb breakfast and dinner buffet....
Review 109:The beds in iceland tend to be quite narrow
Review 110:a very peaceful quiet location, with free hottubs and a sauna, nice breakfast buffet and possibilty to eat at the buffet for dinner
Review 111:Rooms were dated, showers were old and need updating. Not charming or interesting like most hotels we stayed at in Iceland. Tour bus hotel. They left early in the morning and we could hear the parade of luggage wheels proceed through the halls.
Review 112:Breakfast was delicious - lots of choices. Location was terrific - minutes outside of Vik
Review 113:The only complaint I have is that they had a large tractor lawn mower, mowing the lawn two hours before check out right outside my window. That should have been done between check out and check in times and not at the expense of the privacy, fresh air and serenity.
Review 114:Great grounds, and good service. And the food was the best we had in iceland. Very nice place. I will highly recommend it.
Review 115:There was some renovation going on, but it didn't disturb sleeping. Place was full of tourist groups.
Review 116:Receptionist was lovely. The hot spring bath tub was lovely. Room was huge and even a bit too much :)
Review 117:Like many places in Iceland, we've paid a premium here for what would be standard accommodations back home. I think for Iceland it is good value for the money.
Review 118:Clean new buildings, spacious accommodations, excellent breakfast. Staff were friendly, helpful and professional. Beautiful hot tub.
Review 119:Had to pay for sheets
Review 120:Great tv room and common areas. Good kitchen. Nice big dorm room. Friendly mature travellers. Very clean and nicely decorated. Wonderful for a hostel. Felt more like a large but still quaint and cosy BnB. Right near the geothermal spas which were great
Review 121:Food is expensive in Iceland. It helps keep the costs down to get a place with a small refrigerator and kitchenette.
Review 122:Clean and dry. Good service. Vik is a great town.
Review 123:Room very warm even after opening window. Shower bit small, but nice hot water.
Review 124:Nice room, comfortable beds, breakfast buffet was very nice. Unfortunately no time to try the "hotpot".
Review 125:Wi-fi didn't work in our building at all and stuff was not aware until guest complaint next morning during breakfast. Rooms are not equipped with phones to call to the reception which is located in other building 200 meters away.
Review 126:24-hrs desk, spacey rooms, comfortable bathroom with shower, stylish lobby. Located just along ring of Route 1 in a beautiful place near pond between rocks.
Review 127:As we arrived wifi was not functioning but justice sake needs to be saying the staff took necessary care to fix it by the morning after. A bit overpriced hotel but it is about all accommodations in Iceland.
Review 128:Location, facilities, staff
Review 129:Another hot tub would be good for the amount of tourists staying and wanting to use it!
Review 130:The room is spacious and the TV actually has working international channels (this seems a rarity in Iceland). The staff were welcoming and we chose the all-you-can-eat dinner buffet for 5900 ISK - wide range of Icelandic food, high quality, very tasty. The breakfast was also very good, with hot and cold food!
Review 131:These facilities are old, mind you. Our room smelled bad and had a damp feeling. Electricity wires and cable-joinings were visible in the bathroom. During our stay, the place was undergoing renovation in the reception/restaurant area, so hopefully they will refurbish the rooms at some time soon which would be much needed.
Review 132:Located close to Vik. Free outdoor hot tub and sauna. Okay breakfast although not so much to choose from.
Review 133:As we were very late arriving due to a flight delay, an e-mail had been sent to see if we were alright and still on our way which was a lovely touch but unfortunately due to no internet signal on the road, we didn't get this until we were settled into our room, but despite the late hour, we were still greeted with a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. The interior is clean, warm and cosy and we wish we could have stayed an extra night here as it was a much more personal and friendly hotel than our accomodation in Reykjavik! The "make-your-own" waffles gets a thumbs up from me!!!
The Fine Print
