Reviews for Hotel Phoenix

Review 1:Stunning little property with very gracious hosts. Beautifully furnished, lovely space, an exceptional bathroom. Perfect Icelandic experience...all at a very reasonable price!

Review 2:The only suggestion I have is the door window was covered and it was difficult to know when the tour bus was coming so we had to stand outside to wait . Sometimes it was cold. I think an opening to see out would be perfect.

Review 3:The hotel was in a convenient location, very clean, well decorated. The room was large with a little sitting room. The owners were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very nice.

Review 4:The first was that the water STANK of sulfur. It was so bad we actually skipped showers and brushed our teeth with bottled water because the smell would make us gag. No other facility we visited -- hotel, restaurant or otherwise -- had water that smelled even slightly of sulfur! The second issue we had was with the staff -- their overall attitude was just very rude and condescending. We also had to pay for wifi, but it wasn't very much -- I think $5/day.

Review 5:The location was a bit outside of "city center" but not a long walk to get to the excitement. The furnishings in the room were quite nice and we were pleasantly surprised to have a full double bed, rather than two singles pushed together.

Review 6:We actually loved everything about it.

Review 7:The staff were very friendly and helpful without being too pushy. Beautiful and perfectly clean room. Peaceful atmosphere and tasty breakfast. We got excellent tips for our trip - we ended up seeing a lot more than we would have without them!

Review 8:Free Wi-Fi would be nice

Review 9:very nice little hotel with good breakfast and very helpful and friendly hosts - thank you for all the help and wonderful breakfast, Jon!

Review 10:I'ts not for everyone! the place is very opulent and full of fine things so you have to be careful not to break something. There is no lift and stairs are steep. The breakfast is complimentary (not free as they say), so no buffet. Parking wias, if you're lucky (i was ).

Review 11:Very nice and hospitable owners.

Review 12:The hotel is only a 20 minute walk to the centre and nearly the same to the orher points of interest in the city. The staff is very friendly. We got very good tipps and information about restaurants, shops and events. We enjoyed lovely 10 days there.

Review 13:Signage and one-way streets make it difficult to find your way to the hotel. A map would help.

Review 14:Very intimate atmosphere due to small size with excellent facilities and staff assistance. Very nice décor and excellent breakfast. Staff helped a lot with recommendations.

Review 15:No wifi, but I needed a weekend off work anyway! I'd stay here again, and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Reykjavik.

Review 16:The hoteliers were friendly and helpful with my very large baggage, breakfast was simple but delicious, the room was large and comfortable, and turn-down service was a nice touch (they folded my pajamas!). The location was just a few minute's walk to the main shopping district, the waterfront, etc., but located on a quiet portion of the street. The check-in and check-out times were clearly posted and observed (like many large hotel chains.)

Review 17:Wonderful hosts - cordial and informative. Clean, comfortable room with distinctive decor and nice view down to garden patio. Great breakfast (but with limited options).

Review 18:This Hotel is an excellent choice and surpassed our expectations. Cleanliness and location were excellent, staff friendly and helpful and the breakfast delicious.

Review 19:Beautiful hotel , perfectly clean, and in a great location--far superior to location of bigger hotels we considered. The owners were incredibly helpful and pleasant, making our stay a top notch vacation in every way.

Review 20:No tea/ coffee maker in room Hot water from thermal springs with very strong nasty smell

Review 21:Room size and comfort Friendly staff very helpful in booking trips, return to airport and boarding passes,,

Review 22:a brilliant hotel, unique and ran by two charming hosts who went above and beyond to ensure we had an amazing stay, from booking trips for us and sharing information. It was so clean and tidy and lovely little touches such as chocolates in the pillow. Breakfasts were delicious with authentic skyr and choices of tea and plenty of refills! Definitely recommend and will be back.

Review 23:Early breakfast time with cut off point at exactly 9.30h. Breakfast quality was quite poor: pre-fab food, served on your own plate, nothing to choose and everyday the same.

Review 24:Feels like 'home', very nice atmosphere. Friendly people. Nice building. Everything perfect except for the breakfast.

Review 25:Having to wait outside on the road for the tour bus to collect me. The stairs there were lots of them.

Review 26:The room was very well appointed, the breakfast was really good and enough to skip lunch. Having the curtained drawn at night and a chocolate on my pillow.

Review 27:Fantastic location to everything but just on the outskirts so it's quiet. Breakfast was amazing and the owners were extremely helpful and friendly.

Review 28:The hotel is very pleasant and well situated only a short walk from the key area of Reykjavik. The especially good thing is the two fellows who run the hotel and the knowledgeable service they provide.

Review 29:Unkind and very offensive staff. I've been to a number of countries in Europe due to business and travel almost every 2 or 3 months. But it was one of the worst experiences i've ever had or literally the worst because of the unkindness of staff (or owner?)

Review 30:Location

Review 31:The proprietors sometimes get a little undeserved heat from reviewers, for their particular ways. For example, check-in is 4 pm. Not 3:30. If you're early, you leave your bags up front and go off to explore the neighborhood. Also, you're asked to leave your key at the desk in the morning and retrieve it whenever you return. And, there is a fee for Wifi use, so be warned. Parking can fill up quickly in front of the hotel, though there's spacious, free public parking around the corner. We had no issue with any of this. These gentlemen do most of the work here themselves. They run a tight ship and require adherence to these easy restrictions. Once you accept that, you're in for a great and welcoming experience.

Review 32:The Phoenix is perfectly situated on Laugavegur Street. It's a nice walk down the length of the street, through town. The gentlemen who run the establishment are fussy, precise, and extremely helpful. You absolutely cannot do better than to ask these two about your itinerary through the city and country. The building is oldish but nicely restored and kept up. Our room was top floor, overlooking the garden. In late winter this view is a little grim, but looks like it would be lovely in summer. It's a bit of a climb with heavy suitcases up the winding stairs, be warned. Got a great supper recommendation - Pots and Pans, three blocks away. Breakfast is a little minimalist, but satisfying and served with as much conversation as you like. For us, the Phoenix is a definite repeat next time in Iceland.

Review 33:This little boutique hotel is a real gem! The 2 owners were so welcoming and helpful. The hotel is so clean and in a very good location, about 5min from center Reykjavik. Breakfast is plentiful and so delicious.

Review 34:No free wifi in the rooms. ( a very minor complaint which would not put me off staying here again or recommending to others)

Review 35:Very well kept hotel, with extremely friendly helpful staff. Conveniently located just outside the main part of the city with everything in easy walking distance.

Review 36:This hotel was exactly what we were looking for. It's close enough to everything in Reykjavik that you don't feel like it's a chore getting there, but far enough away that you feel like you're going home for the night. The concierges were absolutely fabulous and incredibly helpful, often going out of their way to get us exactly what we're looking for. Daily breakfast was also wonderful and filling. It was a joy to stay here and we look forward to repeating the experience next time we're in Reykjavik.

Review 37:The location, away from the buzz but yet with reasonable access to everything. The ambience and decore was evident that owners have put much effort in making this boutique outfit a special place. It felt like a homestay, with caring hosts, without being overbearing or intrusive, which is rarely encountered in hotels anywhere. An enjoyable breakfast spread.

Review 38:We arrived in the early morning, from the US, with our bags. We had no expectation that our rooms would be available. We were treated somewhat rudely, and not allowed to stay in the common area even though it was pouring rain outside. We offered to purchase breakfast but were told that would not be possible. Do not expect anything out of the normal at this hotel

Review 39:great breakfast, nice decoration, comfortable.

Review 40:Everything, this kind of personal service is not available in large hotel groups, we were looked after in a way that made us feel special and we appreciated all the time the staff spend with us, Iceland would not have been the same without a stay in this hotel. The owner of the hotel went out of his way to accommodate us when we needed it, thank you again J for the special care.

Review 41:Two very friendly helpful staff, who went out of their way to make the best of our day. Hotel tastefully furnished and kept spotless. Good continental breakfast. Good security - someone always at reception to open the door. We would go back there now if we could!

Review 42:- Bathroom flooded after baths. - A completely outdated map they gave us led us to the opposite side of a museum, which has moved six months ago. - Set menu for breakfast, without any choice: we preferred buffet type.

Review 43:- Decoration in old style, very charming.

Review 44:Room not terribly spacious A bit pricey for space

Review 45:Easy access to walk into city Near waterfront and galleries Away from the hustle and bustle Good breakfast

Review 46:It is located in the main street of Reykjavík. The employees are wonderful, really helpful, dedicated to their job and always pleased to provide you any information or advice you may need. The breakfast comes from heaven: all the coffee you want, orange juice, milk, ham, cheese, butter, fresh tomato, fruit marmalade and a great "skyr" a typical icelandic yoghourt. It is the best way to start the day, it gives you all the energy you need to discover an amazing country. We felt like we were at home, we could rest a lot and we had a little fridge at the room that allowed us to keep some snacks. The wifi was completely free and it worked perfectly. We are looking forward to go to Iceland again, and we will definitely make another visit to Phoenix Hotel. Ana and Jonay (Spain)

Review 47:They could manage also a free self service breakfast after the one served

Review 48:We had a very good vacation with a very good service. The hotel has a very nice room and a offers a very nice service

Review 49:Wi-Fi was chargeable at 5 Euro a day

Review 50:Comfortable room, very clean bathroom, great breakfast and veryfriendly, helpful owners. No problem arriving in the early hours ofthe morning.

Review 51:I loved the courtesy and friendliness of the innkeepers who went out of their way to be welcoming and VERY helpful. This is particularly important to solo travelers. Spotless, well-located, small and quiet. A simple, but delicious breakfast served each morning without charge. I never stay in big chain hotels, but I seldom find a gem as lovely and polished as this one.

Review 52:Everything! Our room was beautiful, the bed was comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious and filling. The service was first rate and the owners of the hotel truly care about the satisfaction of their guests. A quick walk to the shopping district, quiet location, and an oasis for the busy traveller.

Review 53:What was there not to like? Nothing.....

Review 54:Jon and Steindor were amazing hosts, they were extremely helpful in their recommendations with regard to tours, restaurants and attractions to visit in Reykjavik and the rest of the country. They were never shy in their opinions about things Icelandic and anywhere else, and made all their guests feel right at home, more like family members than anything else. It was a wonderful place to retreat to after a day in the city or in the countryside.

Review 55:Nothing.

Review 56:Great location, helpful staff, comfortable beds and very clean. If I'm ever back in Iceland I will stay at Hotel Phoenix. Thank you Jon! Breakfast was good!

Review 57:I smoke and had to ring to get back in the building every time I went out. Luckily I don't smoke a lot, but I enjoy a smoke, a few times a day.

Review 58:Room was lovely, clean and warm with all amenities one could need. Location is very good. Breakfast was delicious, filling, and served on beautiful china with classical music in the background. No children running and screaming=)

Review 59:Nothing, it was perfect!

Review 60:I felt really welcomed, found the atmosphere really warm, like home... away from home. All the little details that make the difference! Can't forget the comfortable bed where I slept like a baby and the impeccable breakfast. Definitely my stop in Reykjavik from now on!

Review 61:all was just great

Review 62:This is probably the best smaller hotel we have ever stayed in! Both owners are very dedicated to customer service and making your stay a pleasant one! We loved Jon's local knowledge and suggestions for day trips! They also serve the best continental breakfast ever! We stayed for 4 nights and would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a nice quiet hotel in town centre.

Review 63:We were very happy with everything.

Review 64:The Phoenix is a real hidden gem in the most perfect location with superb hosts. We felt we got quiet, professional, friendly, five star treatment. I doubt you could ever find a better, cleaner, more efficiently run hotel, at such a very reasonable price.

Review 65:Lack of space to put luggage (why not two luggage racks in a double room?) Location (terraced street without gardens and few parking spaces) out of kelter with the refinement of hotel itself

Review 66:Refined and elegant comfort (rooms, beds) Excellent breakfast Within easy walking distance from centre of town

Review 67:Staff extremely helpful and kind Great complimentary breakfast Nice decoration

Review 68:10 euro a day for wi-fi. Noisy street.

Review 93:I agree absolutely with Gregory's comments - everything about this hotel was excellent.

Review 94:Good location for access to the centre of Reykjavik and for transport on trips. The owners were very helpful and considerate. A very pleasant stay.

Review 95:comfy beds good location very helpful owners lovely breakfast

Review 96:No outdoor key; need to ring the bell to have someone let you in.

Review 97:Staff is helpful, friendly.

Review 98:A lovely room, friendly owners and a handy location - what more can you ask for?

Review 99:Location, helpfulness, value for money

Review 100:Nothing at all.

Review 101:Nice room, comfortable beds, very good breakfast, nice and helpful houselords, quite, cosy hotel.

Review 102:nil complaints

Review 103:Owner operated and very keen to meet all needs of stay. A home away from home but with service!

Review 104:Well located for centre of town but still had plenty of parking

Review 105:The room was great, sparklingly clean and full of character. The service was charming and genuine with a personal touch at breakfast and turndown; staff were very friendly and helpful; very humorous and interesting too. The central location meant no problem exploring the city, or being picked up for tours, etc.

Review 106:The desk staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgable. And the daily breakfast was generous and delicious. Plus, the hotel is walking distance to virtually everything in Reykjavik. We had an excellent experience.

Review 107:The only drawbacks I can think of: no elevator, so you get some exercise; and the hot water smells of sulfur, which is true of many places, I believe. The cold water is fine.

Review 108:The location was nice (at the end of the main pedestrian street). We don't like the austere Nordic look, and this was the only place we could find that looked more "homey". The breakfasts were tasty and huge. The place is run by two guys; the morning guy has a very dry sense of humor, which I think some people don't get.

Review 109:No tea making facility in room, but I think that's our 'Britishness'!

Review 110:Top quality in a boutique hotel, just off ther main centre of the city. 5 mins walk to shops, bars, restaurants. Beautiful and clean rooms, superb breakfast. Owners really nice and very helpful on how, where, when to travel and best restaurants. I doubt you would find better.

Review 111:Small and the breakfast was a tray of the same food each day. I feel a little more anonymous in a bigger hotel.

Review 112:Location is perfect for walking to everything. Big comfy room with a big comfy bed. It was quiet. Most of the staff was friendly and helpful.
