Reviews for Kilkenny Hibernian Hotel
Review 1:We heard all the music from late night bar. Hotel paid for car park from 6pm till noon next day although check in time is 3. We were charged € 7.60 we arrived at car park at 1.30 and considering its only €1.50 an hour this didn't make sense
Review 2:Location
Review 3:The hotel is beside the castle and the smithwicks brewery is close by - got a tour of the place and enjoyed it, and all the shops are within walking distance. very good location
Review 4:we were given one of the newly refurbished rooms. it was beautiful. the bed was huge!!! I would recommend it highly to anybody and its so central too.
Review 5:Room lighting was inadequate for reading. Breakfast was adequate but a little disappointing - no pastries available, although these were advertised on menu....
Review 6:Good value for money as we were able to use a booking at fairly short notice. Great location, although building is a little dark and can be noisy... Pleasant reception staff and they were very helful
Review 7:Very Little We Dont Like Only to say The Rooms Need Updating
Review 8:Lovely Friendly Staff & The Fact they re getting to know My Hubby & I as we love staying in the Hibernian.Very
Review 9:Our stay in the run up to Christmas was relaxing. Great facility for some 'time out'. Staff were pleasant, room was clean and comfortable. Bar is cosy and welcoming; bar food is good too.
Review 10:Breakfast to early when you include breakfast in your stay you should get it before u check out also very noisy on corridor from cleaning staff
Review 11:The location was good Close to every thing
Review 12:On our third night there was a LOT of noise in the corridor from groups of people coming and going (and singing) throughout the night and into the early hours. The hotel is in a great location but our room was very dated and in need of refurbishment. The bed cover was badly frayed and worn and looked like it had been there for years. For an average of €140 a night, we did expect more.
Review 13:Very friendly staff on check-in, great location and great shower! Breakfast was cooked to order.
Review 14:Thin walls, could hear both sides conversation and TV's, which were not loud but as the walls are paper thin. Bed cover I think was made in 1960! Blankets and sheets, not seen that since I was 10!. No water on the second day, took over an hour to sort. Constant noise in the room as I think the rooms are so old. Doors closed with loud bangs so guaranteed to be woken by your neighbour during the night. Breakfast disappointing, not enough choice. I do not know how this hotel qualified for 4 stars, I would not give this hotel 1 star.
Review 15:The bar downstairs. Fireplaces always lit and staff very friendly and efficient. On the second day of our stay when there was no hot water, the staff arranged for room service which I think was good service.
Review 16:We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel. From the friendly lady at check in to the bar staff, all staff were efficient, courteous and friendly. The room was comfortable and clean. We had bar food which was very tasty and good value for money.
Review 17:The Hotel itself was very nice. However our room was a little shabby; the bed was uncomfortable and the throw had holes in it. The room was very badly lit! At first I thought I couldn't find one of the light switches.
Review 18:Hotel Location is great. Lots of pubs and resturants within walking distance. Shopping centre is 10 min walk. Staff in the hotel were excellent. Super friendly at reception. Bar staff were really helpfull on hand to take drink orders and help us find a table. The atmosphere in the bar was great and there was a lovely mix of age groups. We had breakfast in the hotel on both mornings and it was excellent.
Review 19:room we stayed in was on to the street was noisy early hours of the morning we had a very good room but there were steps up to the toilet which were not safe and the lights could only be switched on from the wall couldn't turn them on at the bed ...
Review 20:loved the location the food the staff and the bar!
Review 21:The price for a four star you should get more we had no cold water in bathroom not enough towels only soar view TV and light wasn't good in room and bathroom
Review 22:The hotel is lovelly
Review 23:No ideal area for breakfast and dinner. The restaurant is within the bar area where you would sit at night time. The area was very limited and no space to even sit down to have a drink. It would be an improvement to have a different area for dinner and breakfast as opposed to the bar. Doors very hard to close and had to bang them out, not good if trying to sleep. Toilet very hard to flush from the offset. The car park across the road is within a public car park. No free complimentary parking for guests is poor.
Review 24:Convenient location, nice breakfast and friendly accommodating staff.
Review 25:Really helpful and friendly staff, nice cozy open fires which were dotted around the hotel, huge and very comfortable bedrooms and the nicest breakfast in bed I've had in a long time.
Review 26:Very poor room, small with furniture impeding way to bathroom.Poorly maintained decor and very dim lighting. Also inefficient room heating.
Review 27:Location, and staff were all very good.
Review 28:Group of friends visiting Kilkenny for shopping and fun. It was excellently situated, great value for money and staff were excellent. We couldn't have asked for more
Review 29:The location and ground floor area
Review 30:The bedrooms are dated and shabby. There was a plug hanging off the wall by my bed which seem really unsafe. The bedrooms need updating , it is a great location and the staff are lovely, the breakfast was terrible ..its all about the location and old style feel in the main bar and lobby..
Review 31:disappointing breakfast but after speaking to staff member it was rectified to our satsifaction
Review 32:lovely clean room, great staff ,great location and lovely food
Review 33:Breakfast ,,,grilled bacon and poached eggs, bacon was steamed not grilled, and eggs were full of water, told server and she just shrugged her shoulders
Review 34:Central location, staff friendly and accommodating,
Review 35:Furniture could use some maintenance. Hot water was not available on the first day of our stay, meaning cold showers before a wedding. But this was fixed by morning. Mediocre breakfast.
Review 36:Ideally situated. Friendly staff. Charming character of hotel
Review 37:The noise from the street was just terrible as there is a night club underneath hotel and we listened to awful shouting and singing until 3 am. Dont stay here for a relaxing break! Location excellent is you are one of the ones singing on the street!!!
Review 38:Don't have their own parking, but a multistory carpark is literally across the road, 20 yards away! so not an issue at all!
Review 39:Beautiful Comfortable and convenient location. Friendly staff, lovely restaurant and bang in the centre of town, ideal for visitors to the castle. Hotel itself is charming and has a great atmosphere
Review 40:We only ate in the restaurant once and regret not going more. The quality of the food was excellent. They bars downstairs were very nice,a great atmosphere throughout. The staff made our stay that extra bit more comfortable, I really couldn't say enough about them
Review 41:The only interesting thing was that the bathroom hadn't a window, but its possible that is how these hotels work over here. Not a huge problem! The staff were also friendly but seemed quite busy when we first arrived. One woman helped us by pointing out the good places to see on our second night though!
Review 42:The location of this hotel was prime! Walking distance to all of the places we enjoyed visiting!
Review 43:Central hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. The food and eating area was very nice. The room was cleaned every day to a high standard. Reception and night staff very helpful and nothing was a problem.
Review 44:Could not find fault with our experience there, staff were great, food was lovely, bed were comfy and very clean.
Review 45:We loved our stay and could not of been happier. The bar was really lovely and cosy.
Review 46:See above
Review 47:The hotel is very central but we stayed on a Friday night and were kept awake til 2 am by the noise of a local nightclub. I advise people who want to sleep before 2 am not to stay here at weekends.
Review 48:Breakfast - staff run of their feet. waiting for cereal bowls, eggs under cooked, no cold meats or cheeses
Review 49:Great welcome, lovely staff. Fabulous evening meal
Review 50:The room was poorly lit and too warm. The hotel is in a busy area so having the window open meant a lot of noise. No air conditioning
Review 51:Location was great and breakfast was delicious
Review 52:I rang to ask for an early check in @2pm (1 hour earlier than check in time) + I was told this was no problem. Upon arriving at the hotel (@2.30pm) my room was not ready. I had to wait a further 20mins. I was then given the key and told my room was ready. When I got to my room it was still being cleaned + I had to wait outside the room for over 5 mins. This would normally not be an issue, but after I rang I presumed my request would be taken on board!! The sink in the bathroom had a big crack in it + there was a spider in the bath. Disappointing as I had high hopes for this hotel.. I had pancakes for breakfast + they were only ok!!
Review 53:Location is perfect
Review 54:Wasn't happy with d room very small not even a table to put make on n mirror way to high up n plugs very scarce for drying hair..was very noisy as it was on side of street
Review 55:Great location, lovely home cooked to order breakfast- what a delight! Conmfortable bar with a fire and a super Irish Coffee at the end of a long day. Friendly professional staff.
Review 56:The room was very small with outdated furniture which kept falling apart. The bed linen was worn out and ripped in places, as were the curtains and bed-throw. The carpet was loose in places which caused number of tripping incidents. The electric socket behind bed locker was sticking away from the wall so when the iron was plugged in you could actually see the "sparks flying". The room overall needed to be properly cleaned!!!
Review 57:Breakfast
Review 58:No duvet. worn out bedclothes. Lighting needs updating. Orange juice at breakfast was not even concentrate which would have been acceptable - horrible zingy taste from it.
Review 59:Clean. Nice old world bar. Staff pleasant. Breakfast cooked to order.
Review 60:our room was in the front of the hotel so street noise was terrible beeping from zebra crossing would do your head in we stayed in the hotel before and never had this problem if we stay again we will be asking for a better room location
Review 61:hotel location was very good
Review 62:Sunday night - admittedly after rugby :) and an Irish win - but rooms really really noisey. You need to factor that in - in a great area but lots of bars/nightclubs.
Review 63:It has a great atmosphere, lovely Irish pub/hotel with fantastic bar food.
Review 64:The lighting in the room was dark. The desk staff and waiters were rather dismissive. The parking lot was close to the hotel, but only free between 6pm and 11am. You have to ask about it.
Review 65:It was a nice, older place. The large room had faded elegance. Location was very good. Around the corner from the castle and right across from the main street. Also, breakfast was very good.
Review 66:Shower didn't work, bed was uncomfortable and literally broken. (Shower, too, and I was told that was just the way it was.) Thank goodness it was only for one night.
Review 67:Staff great. Location very convenient. Everything else lackluster--at best...bed and shower horrid, breakfast tepid and uninspired. Included, though.
Review 68:well not so bad 'but wifi didn't work on 2nd floor . Reception said may be due to walls being too thick and booster not strong enough, tried to help but no luck. Also to was v small and couldn't get rte, only one English station working, again rec staff tried but said remote control was broken, lucky were too oaps who didn't watch much to
Review 69:Staff most helpful all over pleasant people to deal with
Review 70:I was very happy with my stay except for that the WiFi worked everywhere except my room it seemed to drop every time I entered the room
Review 71:I found the a staff to be very helpful and welcoming the room was very comfortable and the breakfast was wonderful
Review 72:As much as we enjoyed are stay at the hotel and I wouldn't be a picky person I would say you should book room only ...the breakfast was atrocious both myself and the hubby opted for full irish the only part of it that was edible was the fried egg and hash brown the rest was under cooked very disappointing
Review 73:The location of the hotel is excellent you couldn't be more central ...arrived a bit early and the room wasn't ready but the young lady on the reception couldn't have been more helpful she was very friendly and welcoming ..the hotel has lovely decor and the staff were great
Review 74:Lovely staff, big room & big bathroom. Delicious breakfast. 2 minute walk to Kilkenny castle, right in the middle of town. Heaps of parking very close, partly subsidised by the hotel. Would stay again.
Review 75:This hotel looks great on the surface but when you actually spend time in it, you see that it is lacking. Things like tattered bedspreads and broken furniture. And we were not there for the night scene and the bar in our hotel was extremely loud at night. Also, when I tried to run a bath, the water suddenly turned brown.
Review 76:Great location. Pretty hotel.
Review 77:TV didn't work. Shower wasn't great. Breakfast had only one of each item. Not worth the money I paid. Also hotel wouldn't pay the 70cent postage to mail me my charger which I unfortunately forgot.
Review 78:Mattress v poor. We both woke up with sore backs.
Review 79:Superb location. Close to all the sights, shops, restaurants, etc.. Virtually on the Medieval mile. Friendly helpful staff.
Review 80:only downfall for me was that as it was the weekend, the town was party central which is perfect if that's what you like but I wanted a nice quiet weekend away
Review 81:Perfect location, everything you need in walking distance. Hotel was lovely. Staff were pleasant. Had a brilliant time, would highly recommend
Review 82:Couldn't get wifi in hotel room.
Review 83:Staff were very friendly & welcoming & the location of hotel was brilliant. Located near all tourist attractions!
Review 84:The breakfast was poor, first morning part of my husbands fry was cold and on the 3rd morning, my scrambled egg was cold, I complained and it came back just reheated on the same plate, it was like rubber
Review 85:We liked the location so easy to get around the city
Review 86:Had a problem with the water temp fluctuating in the bathroom sink and shower. Sometimes went from cool to very hot suddenly which was disconcerting. Hotel staff did immediately try to remedy the problem. Still persisted though to a lesser degree.
Review 87:Love the old hotel ambience Very nice bar area Hotel right in center of town Short walk to Kilkenney Castle Breakfast had a wide selection of food items
Review 88:Breakfast was not good on any day (Exmp uncooked bacon & overlooked eggs)...all furniture needs restored r replaced
Review 89:Staff&location+ City& the local people
Review 90:The lighting in the rooms is poor. Feel a bit like a mole in the whole hotel! The bath is tiny! No room safe.not enough seating in the bar, only stools.
Review 91:Staff were very pleasant food quite nice
Review 92:Room was not as expected from the description and pictures. Rather worn and very loud with all the traffic noise coming from the street. I'm not sure if the price is really worth it.
Review 93:Nice staff, good atmosphere and walk distance to many attractions.
Review 94:it was perfect our entire stay - how can I say anything went wrong? I will definitely stay here every time I'm in Kilkenny (Arts Festival time).
Review 95:Everything from the moment we walked in. The room was comfortable, large, and easy to make ourselves 'home' in. The staff was helpful, friendly, and always available - even in the middle of a party, a tour bus coming in and the middle of the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Generally, I would run from a place so busy, but you never felt like it was busy. You might say, it had a 'zen' feeling.
Review 96:The front room over the street is also noisy from late night revellers, garbage trucks, etc depends what you're used to I guess...
Review 97:Big front room spacious, light and airy.
Review 98:Room & ensuite was very ordinary. Could not switch off lights in room without taking fob out! Breakfast was served in the pub which is dark and unappealing surroundings.
Review 99:Brilliant location in the heart of Kilkenny City
Review 100:We found bedroom very comfortable the breakfast very good and the staff very helpful. It was our first time in Kilkenny and thought it was a great city, we will be back
Review 101:No parking and when told E1.50 an hour during the day ( 6pm to 6am covered by Hotel) , not such a good deal then, but later told I could purchase a two day booking for E10.... better. Noisy early morning deliveries, otherwise I chilled out. Safe in room out of comission
Review 102:Central, park up and walk, lots to see in this historic city, all year round. Spacious (but old), good restaurant and bar food.
Review 103:Wonderful place, excellent staff, great comfort. We felt really welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We had just got married the day before our arrival and were made to feel really special Thank you - we hope to return soon!
Review 104:Beds were the absolute worst.
Review 105:While the staff was very nice and the breakfast very good, the room was not so good. The mattresses are old and very uncomfortable. We had twin beds and they both sagged in the middle something terrible. When we got back to our room at night, the lights weren't working and the next morning we had no hot water. Although they fixed both problems eventually, it left us pretty disappointed. They did make up for it by giving us a partial refund on the room and providing us breakfast outside the normal hours since we missed it due to showers taking longer while we waited for hot water so that part was good.
Review 106:Machine noise in early morning from rear window - possibly air con unit ?
Review 107:Location excellent and hotel architecture - full of character. Breakfast good.
Review 108:room 127 shower was too hot and couldn't be adjusted. Wasn't too worried as only spending one night.
Review 109:Staff were lovely, very helpful and cheerful.
Review 110:The walls are paper thin - we could not sleep at all. Traffic/street noise was exceptionally loud (we would expect some). No fan in the room at all and no fan in bathroom - so we had to leave the window open when possible for ventilation and had to close it at night due to noise, but then it got exceptionally hot. NOISE from hallway, random plumbing noises, people using the bathroom could even be heard. We had stairs in our room which had dirty fingerprints all over them. Bed was uncomfortable. There was no proper showerhead which sprayed water on the polished stone floor - the bathroom was a hot steamy, treacherous mess after a shower.
Review 111:The location is fantastic.
Review 112:the location was brilliant. It was a very comfortable place to stay and it was clean! The staff were good especially in the restaurant and reception
Review 113:Room was obviously the rubbish one they give when you book through a website. Very poor lighting. Could hardly see applying make up etc. only natural light through a balcony door. No window to open for air.
Review 114:Drawers in the room were off tracks and some furniture in need of repair. Soft goods very worn and asked for replacements.
Review 115:Great location in city center. Courteous staff. Excellent breakfast and service.
Review 116:very friendly reservation girls on front desk area. all staff were terrific and helpful at the hotel. great location in town. my room was comfortable and clean, everything you could ask for in a hotel will definitely be back.
Review 117:extremely noisy - the night club 5 metres away did not stop until nearly 3.00 am. The door handle of our room fell off in my hand, was promptly fixed then fell off again. There was a hole in the bedspread. The ensuite was tiny.
Review 118:Very central Friendly helpful staff
Review 119:Breakfast while it delivered what it said on the label the quality was 5 out of 10 at best No need for this at all
Review 120:Staff friendly and efficient Touch of old world charm right in the centre of the city. Walking distance to every possible requirement. Parking adjacent free from 6pm to 12am nice bonus right in the centre
Review 121:No fault of the hotel but opposite the hotel there were a lot of people in pubs with load music so it took ages to get to sleep.
Review 122:The staff were extremely helpful and were very accomodating with bags etc. Location was excellent and the beds were very comfy
Review 123:Only one hand towel. I asked at reception -still no towel. I asked night manager and he handed me bundle of face cloths and bath mats. Cooked breakfast was served too quickly - before we had time to eat fruit. I had to send mine back because it was not hot enough.
Review 124:Location is good and paid parking good.
Review 125:I did think the furniture in the room, particularly for the table and chairs could do with a re furb, they were stained and did not look great. Also the shower head (or absence of one) should be addressed.
Review 126:This hotel if fab for young couple who intend trying out all the night life. It is right in the centre of town, close to shops and to clubs, late bars etc. The staff were very helpful although I felt the breakfast staff could have been a bit cheerier.
Review 127:Most of staff friendly but one or 2 could be a little more friendly & interact with the customers.
Review 128:Liked the location and the ambiance of the hotel.
Review 129:Extremely overpriced given the total lack of facilities. I was given a free pass to a gym three miles away. Parking is completely inadequate. The hotel will validate parking in a local multi-storey car park from 6pm each day. Check in is at 3pm and there is no assistance with your luggage. Breakfast was mediocre and room was clean but extremely sparse with dated furnishings.
Review 130:Central. Front of house staff were helpful and friendly.
Review 131:Breakfast was very poor. Fruit salad was uneatable and the hot breakfast was not pleasant to eat. Table service was poor, when asked for sauce server/manager pulled two sachets out of her pocket and threw them on the table.
Review 132:Receptionest was extremely professional and helpful. Bar staff were friendly and professional.
