Reviews for Club House Hotel Kilkenny
Review 1:there was no proper heating in the building. The room we stayed in was very cold and we only got a heater after repeatedly asking for one.The hot tap in the bathroom wouldn't turn on and the hair dryer was broken
Review 2:staff were friendly and food was good
Review 3:Hotel staff weren't very accommodating when we requested room service during the day (a few toasted sandwiches) to be sent up. Rooms are pretty basic and old fashioned. No hot water at one stage and room was cold a lot of the time until we asked for heating to be switched on. Hotel itself smelled old and musty and had what I can only describe as a 'creepy' feeling to it! However, bar was nice enough and bar staff friendly. Hotel is in a great location for exploring Kilkenny. Budget hotel if you're not looking for anything fancy.
Review 4:Location
Review 5:The shelves were dusty, the bathroom was not clean. The bed clothes were torn at the edge and when we turned on the hot water it ran at a mucky brown colour. Very disappointing
Review 6:The location
Review 7:Extremly dated needs to be done up! Musty old smell when we came in the front door. Walls were so thin it sounded like people in next rooms and corridor were in our room. Its a shame to let the hotel go so downhill and not keep modern as it could be lovely
Review 8:The bed was so comfortable, location is great and friendly staff
Review 9:TV a bit small in room- a bit dated , but it is a very old hotel.
Review 10:Location - and decor - old hotel - many features still in place. The layout is quirky - small windy stairs etc...
Review 11:Unfortunately some trouble in corridor during the night.lots of noise, alarms and guards called.Lucky to get an apology from reception staff.
Review 12:Hotel well located.Very good breakfast and dining room staff very pleasant.
Review 13:Cleanliness poor. Uncomfortable beds, outdated decor. Rubbish breakfast dreadful waiting staff. Being woken by fire alarm in middle of the night.
Review 14:Good location to bars, shops and restaurants
Review 15:Room was so cold I had my coat on, I asked for the heating on and wastold it only comes on late evening. I was given a oil fill heater and Ihad to work how to get it going. With my age there were so many steps,it was dark and smelly. No where to sit if I did not need to go out. Itwould be in the bar which I don't like. Or in my room where I staymost time. The cups was dirty also the teaspoons. I went to buy a cupand spoon for my own used. Also milk and coffee. I took some photos sowill send them in if I find the way to do so. This Hotel do not worth£500. it was waste of my money considering I am an oap. Its the worstHotel I ever stayed in. My late husband was from Kilkenny and he wouldbe so sad to see where I stay for ten nights. I would not recommend itto my enemies. If I could have a refund I would have asked but now Iknow why they don't give refund. I did have to asked for a receiptwhen I paid else would not been given one. I am a very sad customer.
Review 16:The only good thing was hotel at town centre so my daughter in law couldvisit me because I was going to Cork where my late husband is laid torest. Only two staff was ok one was the cleaner and another was a man atthe front desk who took my case outside to the taxi when I was leaving. The rest was so crumpet. Don't know if because I was the only blackperson staying there.??? I was very polite to all staff.
Review 17:The breakfast was just dreadful & the whole set up seemed so unprofessional.
Review 18:Nothing, I just wonder as to how it is allowed to operate as a hotel & the breakfast was just dreadful
Review 19:The rooms were very basic and small. Decor was poor. Breakfast wasn't the best. Overall not great value for money and I found the reception staff very unhelpful.
Review 20:Great location and the hotel has parking
Review 21:We had to ring a bell to get in after a night out as thy didn't Give you a key which was quite annoying
Review 22:Stayed here as visiting friends. Staff lovely, great location and within walking distance of shops and pub and the buzzing nightlife
Review 23:Wifi did not work in my room & I was told it could not reach my room. I had to go to lobby to use it- and very slow connection.Noisy and could hear the hallway floors creak & people walking hallways late at night.
Review 24:Great location, close to Kilkenny castle & design center & other main attractions within short walking distance. Hotel had a charming old atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and attentive.
Review 25:Smell of smoke in the room when we arrived and the door open to leave the smell out. Two single beds pushed together to make a Double bed. Bed sheets not big enough to cover bed.
Review 26:Location and breakfast
Review 27:Really old, really needs refurbished, old folks home smell, decor from the 50's ( not intentional)
Review 28:Location is great, free parking (although hard to find) nice staff
Review 29:As I suffer from arthritis room 29 was very far and tackling the stairs was excruciating and carrying bags very dangerous. Did not know on booking jhere was no lift.
Review 30:The bar staff were lovely and the food in bar monday night was really nice and good value.
Review 31:Unfortunately the wi-fi didn't work during our stay.
Review 32:Very nice stay, near the centre of Kilkenny, vintage hotel: super chic. Staff was very friendly, breakfast was super.
Review 33:there was no bath in the en suite but there was a shower. it is just a personal choice
Review 34:staff were very accomodating. also the breakfast was fabulous. good parking also. and location was excellent
Review 35:The front desk clerk was brusque to the point of rudeness on multiple occasions. When we approached again and asked to change our room because our first room smelled heavily of cigarette smoke, the clerk quickly stated that they were extremely busy and were unlikely to be able to change our rooms. Thankfully what seemed to be the manager was standing nearby and acted very quickly to switch us to a new room. However he rushed us out of the old room as though they were expecting to put another guest in right behind us, despite the smell. The whole place seemed a bit run down, old and not exactly lovingly cared for. The rooms are primarily in a roughly 1960's era add-on in back, not vintage, and the layout features a confusing warren of directions. Breakfast was ok but the staff seemed very rushed and overworked.
Review 36:Free parking was great. Location was great. Price was very nice and low but you do get what you pay for. Ok for a budget hotel.
Review 37:Desk staff were efficient but not warm. No smile or eye-contact - quite clipped. I had fond memories of staying in the 90s when the staff made the place.
Review 38:Standard 3 star, fair value. Lovely eccentric old-atyle feel to the place. Staff at breakfast were great.
Review 39:It was in the city centre and very accessible, the room was very good, the hotel may have been a little old looking but it was nice and the staff were very kind
Review 40:The room and facilities were average. The place needs a good bit of money put into it to update it, in order to make more money.
Review 41:The staff were friendly particularly the night porter. The location was excellent.
Review 42:I loved my room. Staff very helpful and friendly. I was attending a music course so the room I had was ideal as it was away from the main road so I didn't hear any weekend revellers.
Review 43:It is an old refurbished hotel so there is no lifts. Getting the room is a maze. You will check how good your memory is. We weren't allowed to have lunch because we arrived late and kitchen was closed, but still people in the restaurant being served second courses.
Review 44:Location, staff and value. Free parking at the rear of the hotel.
Review 45:There was a slightly off putting smell in the bar/restaurant. The management clearly struggle to keep pace with the demands (and cost) of redecorating and maintaining such an old building. Despite this, everything worked, and in any case was more than compensated by the character of the building, and the competitive rates.
Review 46:The friendly and efficient staff, terrific breakfast, central location (with parking), the 'faded' grandeur of a 300 year old building. These items combined with competitive pricing to make the Club House Hotel excellent value.
Review 47:TV was not working in our room, we reported it when we arrived and it was still not fixed when we were leaving
Review 48:Hotel very central, nice comfy bed and friendly staff
Review 49:No lifts and a long and rather complicated walk to our bedroom! (But great help carrying cases).
Review 50:This old fashioned hotel had wonderful, welcoming staff and an excellent attitude to make their quests happy.
Review 51:This is a very tired hotel in need of some refurbishment. It was very busy and through the night there was a lot of noise of people coming in and out and moving between rooms. The staff seemed to not know how to deal with that so that other guests could sleep.
Review 52:Free parking, good central location.
Review 53:Reception lady could of been a bit more cheerful. A bit more attention to detail by the cleaner.
Review 54:Bar and breakfast lady, lovely very helpful. Pub very nice, restaurant too.
Review 55:The hotel is old and seems like it was added to quite a few times and with different floor levels. It is not the cleanest or most comfortable of hotels. Value fir money it definitely was not at €260 for two nights
Review 56:Location was good and staff very friendly. Food is excellent and the bar is comfortable
Review 57:shocked by poor condition. Dirty, mattress in poor shape, chairs had rips in fabric. No elevator so you will carry your big bags up flights of stairs
Review 58:location was nice. Easy walk to downtown. Staff assisted with any questions we had
Review 59:very kind and helpful staff a la carte breakfast a little to fashioned but very authentic hotel perfect location in the town centre with car park for free
Review 60:It is a charming small hotel, that creaks a bit as you walk along the corridors, but there is everything to like, in a location that wins hands down, and at a reasonable rate in a town of ever-growing UNreasonable rates!
Review 61:Quite a haul from car park to room up and down stairs with luggage. No lift. Shower could have been cleaner. Light it bathroom took a while to turn on.
Review 62:Once you found it, the location is great for walking to local attractions.
Review 63:breakfast was a little disappointing and the one waitress on duty was clearly over worked and could not give adequate attention to the customers.
Review 64:the location was excellent. The decor is a little tired but the prices are reasonable.
Review 65:The night porter greeting me and my father on the doorstep when we knocked with the word ' I think your in the wrong place lads...'???
Review 66:the bed was very comfortable and I had a great sleep.
Review 67:Was granted a late check out. at check in time. was called the following morning by staff screaming saying that we lied and had to leave before the police were called. management was unprofessional. I have never been spoken to in this manner. Room was is disrepair. Facilities dirty would not allow my pets to stay there.
Review 68:The first thing I noticed was the stains on the carpets walking to theroom. I then entered the room to be greeted by an overwhelming smell ofdamp and mould. The WiFi was non existant, the bathroom stank of vinegarwhich im gathering was from the copious amounts of touch-up-silicone inthe shower. One bed was ok, the other very hard. This hotel was notvintage... It was old . The mould and damp genuinly gave me an asthmaattack. The staff were not approachable.
Review 69:The location was good, as was the parking.
Review 70:No issues.
Review 71:As I was travelling alone the receptionist gave me a room in a quiet part of the hotel, which I appreciated. Have stayed many times and never left the breakfast room hungry. Great value and location.
Review 72:...... however decor and exterior tired and a lot of redecoration woukd make the hotel a stunning period hotel. very noisy at night as a party was being continued in one of the rooms. I suspect this happens in Kilkenny at weekends. Could hotel do anything to tone down revellers......I think so. Impossible to sleep.
Review 73:Food. Chef(s) obviously highly skilled. Bar food and breakfast excellent. Staff courteous, kind and very helpful. Lovely building.....
Review 74:Parking gave a bad impression as old and dated.
Review 75:Historic hotel, 200 years old. Great architecture in bar and breakfast room.Plus a nice breakfast with lovely dishes.
Review 76:The price 175 euro for two was excessive. I know it was bank holiday weekend and Cat festival etc but it was ridiculous and embarrassing as I was treating my sister. Am sure she thought I'd picked somewhere really cheap.
Review 77:Loooong walk from reception to the room, up and down and around in circles, no lift, not suitable for those with impaired mobility. Very old and outdated, could do with a little updating.
Review 78:Great location, right in the town centre. Late residents bar, very friendly helpful staff. Free parking.
Review 79:This hotel is entwined in my history, I ate breakfast surrounded by my fathers paintings but the bedrooms are no longer up to standard especially for the current room rate.
Review 80:The staff are friendly & helpful
Review 81:The shower in the bath The bed was uncomfortable No lift
Review 82:Very friendly and helpful staff Excellent location Beautiful old style/vintage hotel Breakfast very good
Review 83:There are a lot of stairs and no lift. If you are put in back section bedrooms, use outside stairs and intercom as it reduces up/down stairs and walking. Night desk staff did not even look up when we entered reception.
Review 84:Loved the location and price. Daytime staff was very friendly and helped with directions and day trip suggestions. Liked the quirkiness and history of the building.
Review 85:Building/decor old fashioned and jaded but clean - of course this is why it is such good value
Review 86:Friendly staff, great breakfast, town centre location and excellent value
Review 87:Some cob webs on the ceiling I hate spiders but didn't see any spiders so that good, but does make you uneasy if you don't like spiders!
Review 88:Location was excellent, and room was quiet and private, hotel has a more homely feel than some of the bigger hotels. Cleaning staff left towels outside room door when do not disturb sign on door, which was great.
Review 89:This hotel is the very description of ripoff Ireland! The only thing going for it is its location. It's dated decor is shabby at best. It can claim olde Worlde charm but in reality it is worn out and needs a total revamp. The old stained carpets in the corridors cause a musty smell which the staff try to mask with spray air fresheners only making the situation worse. The bedroom wallpaper is stained and torn in places. The shower area was basic and very small, bedroom furnishings were sparse and shabby. I would not stay here again or recommend it to others.
Review 90:Small bit outdated but clean. Stayed in room 15 and it was a long maze to try find the room. Shower was unbearable hot.
Review 91:Right in the centre of city, bed comfy, clean room with towels and soaps. No noise.
Review 92:Ironing facilities located in hallway near my room.
Review 93:The location is ideal, near bus stop, city centre, castle & other tourist attractions. Staff are so friendly & accommadating, they are always willing to help e.g. allowed me to check in early, held my bags in storage until I was ready to depart Kilkenny on the bus, bought hairdryer to my room when requested. Hotel was good value for breakfast & lunch also.
Review 94:Reception women needs to smile and don't be so abrupt and "I am bored with this" TV need not work at all but asked and got a small discount. Night porter very professional.
Review 95:Location and breakfast excellent
Review 96:Although I found the old style decor quite charming it was a little worn in places and in need of updating. I also am accustomed to having ironing equipment either automatically in my room or available on request. This hotel had a fixed ironing point in the corridor which was a little off putting.
Review 97:So central to all nightlife and beautiful castle. Residents bar after nightclub and a Great breakfast the next morning.
Review 98:Rooms are dated and furniture was mismatched Bathroom needed a refurb Room we were in was a smoking room and it stank of smoke, I think all hotels should be non smoking at this stage. You can tell it is a hotel used for stags and hens but it would make more sense to market /upgrade some of it to a couples market!
Review 99:I liked the free Wifi Location in Kilkenny city centre Residents Bar was friendly after hours Large rooms with double and single bed Interesting decor in the common areas
Review 100:Should have stated all the steps.
Review 101:Vey accommodating staff. No lift so helped with all luggage. Gave us early breakfast. Very pleasant. Beautiful dining room. Cozy bar.
Review 102:Needs a good overhaul. A good coat of paint for the outside and a complete clean up and re vamp of corridors, especially the entrance hall as it gives a bad impression as you enter.
Review 103:The room was comfortable and clean and staff were very accomidating .
Review 104:The hotel is kinda cold could do with some updating maybe.. Had a full irish the next morning but it wasn't nice..
Review 105:It's central and has its own car park, grand if ur only staying one r two nights.. We were more r less there to sleep, rest of the time we were out..
Review 106:The quaint and authentic turn of the Victorian decore whilst not opulent is very cosy and combine that with fine food and helpful and courteous staff makes for a great hotel that I would not hesitate to stay in again or recommend to others.
Review 107:The hotel is very old, the room we were given 1st was freezing, we had too move rooms. The other person that was with us, the lock of her room was broken so she had too move rooms. Her bathroom window was very old had an awful draft in it. There are shower curtains over the baths which are very old, there was a bit of a smell of them. The hotel could do with a full refurbishment but I guess that's why it's so cheap too stay there.
Review 108:The location was very good.
Review 109:no sky sport's as we were a group of lads we wanted to watch the soccer and boxing , but that was nothing a short walk didn't fix
Review 110:ideal location , friendly staff
Review 111:The first staff we saw at check in was in the later afternoon. Answered all inquiries but gave us the feeling she was tolerating us. Morning staff were all pleasant.
Review 112:Breakfast was excellent. Dining room staff was quick, couteous and pleasant.
Review 113:Was like going back in time. Bedrooms very poor. Staff friendly but clothes were dirty and same dirty clothes on in day two. For same money u could get nice hotel
Review 114:Very handy as u can walk into town
Review 115:Bathroom though clean- needed some maintenance..
Review 116:Location! Free safe parking, comfy bed, tea/coffee making facilities in the room, nice quiet room while being so near city centre, beautiful "fresh flowers" everywhere! Warm welcome & very good customer service!
Review 117:The rooms could do with updating but it doesn't prevent you from enjoying a budget stay in a great town.
Review 118:Superb location just minutes from where the fun begins. Helpful staff. Old decor but I liked that for adding character. Good size room, decent bed. Parking facility around the back. The staff have been quoted as being miserable. Ignore that. They might not be bubbly and full of the joys of spring but they are approachable and helpful and that's all you need!
Review 119:The only thing was the amount of stairways to get to rooms. Was good exercise though but, might not suit everyone. This wouldn't stop us from returning all the same.
Review 120:The location was excellent. A friendly staff, very helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable with t.v hot running water and shower also, fresh bed linen and towels daily. No trouble sleeping as regards to noise it was quiet and peaceful. Would revisit again as we had a lovely stay here.
Review 121:The stairs and long corridors. A stairlift would be a bonus especially for the elderly
Review 122:Staff friendly and helpful. Food good. Comfortable rooms. Very central and quiet location.
Review 123:No complaints
Review 124:Friedly staff, good food, very clean. Bear in mind this hotel was built in 1790. It might therefore appear dated. To us this adds to the appeal of the place.
Review 125:Not suitable if you have mobility issues as there are lots of stairs and corridors. Also, limited channels on TV - not an issue if you are going to be out and about most of the time
Review 126:Staff were very friendly, room was spacious, clean and in a quiet part of hotel. Beds were comfortable and bathroom clean and functional. Also, it is right in the middle of town with easy access to shops, restaurants, pubs and sights.
Review 127:The refurbishment didn't seem to go far enough. Needs more investment.
Review 128:Very central location. Reasonable value. Free parking with ample spaces. Nice breakfast.
Review 129:that receptionist and owner sat at reception.never made any attempt to say hello.or anything.like have a nice stay/day.No not a squeak.... also the bar was empty.needs abit updating.and atmosphere not there.asked for ground floor room...didn't get it.and didn't get a explanation why.
Review 130:That breakfast was served at table.also beds we're comfortable.
Review 131:A bit of a trek to our room, no lift so wouldn't be the best option for people who have mobility problems, apart from that I couldn't fault it.
Review 132:Really nice staff, special mention to Emily behind reception who couldn't do enough for us, Dave in the bar who always had a smile on his face and Peter the night porter who was super friendly. Really nice, clean and airy rooms. Comfy beds, quiet location, exactly what we were looking for.
Review 133:Receptionist wasn't exactly very welcoming Dated rooms Hair dryer didn't work in room No air conditioning what so ever which made us both feel very ill as it was during the hot summer Wouldn't recommend for a couple who are looking for a weekend away as nothing fancy
Review 134:Excellent location Would recommend for stag/hen nights Bar staff were nice and young staff were too .
Review 135:Got full breakfast at 5.30 in the morning , that is impressive most hotels would laugh at you if you asked for anything to eat at that hour. Will stay there again just for that reason alone plus location and car park are very handy
Review 136:The hotel is extremely dated. The bed was comfortable but that was as far as it went really. There is nothing pretty about the hotel, one curtain in the bedroom and plastic industrial style toilet roll sheet dispensers. As I said, location was just amazing and the hotel could have alot of potential in it but really just the type of place you only want to sleep in.
Review 137:The location was amazing. We did not see the inside of a taxi all weekend.
Review 138:No faults from our end.we will be back again.
Review 139:Good clean no frills hotel with old world charm. Nothing fancy but always spotlessly clean/ free parking/great location. Staff lovely.prices always good for area.Kilkenny can have very pricy hotels.
Review 140:We thought that for the price we paid, it was an average motel. It felt a bit run down. We did understand we were staying on a Saturday but we stayed in a much nicer place in Dublin on a Sunday for about $10.00 more.
Review 141:The staff was very friendly and even though it looked like a lot of partiers stayed there, it was nice and quiet.
