Reviews for Guesthouse Bitra B&B
Review 1:The decor was lovely. We could park our car right in front of the door. The breakfast was very good. The room was very spacious. There was a great lounge available with pretty furniture and a lot of books. The owners warned us of an incoming blizzard and advised us when to leave in the morning to make it to Reykjavik.
Review 2:The only downside is the 10 minute drive into sellfoss but we really enjoyed being in the countryside with the horses on the drive.
Review 3:The hosts were really friendly/helpful and the place was really quiet and easy to find. There was a lovely selection at breakfast.
Review 4:The outside looked a little unkempt, but the inside made up for it!
Review 5:Loved the decor, the beds were comfortable and the owner was very accommodating to our needs. The food was delicious. No expense was spared at this guesthouse, it felt like a 5 star resort.
Review 6:Accommodation was basic, but clean and comfortable. We only stayed 1 night, but this would be fine for a longer stay in the area too. Breakfast was good.
Review 7:Nothing, I would make an effort to stay at this location again if I make it back to Iceland.
Review 8:The staff were so pleasant and helpful. I actually ran out in the middle of the night to switch our rental car to a 4x4 vehicle. I did NOT leave a note so my girlfriend was a bit worried when she woke up and I was not there. The woman who helped run the B&B helped my girlfriend track my whereabouts and keep her company. They were so kind, friendly, and funny about the whole situation.
Review 9:You could easily hear everything that happened in the entire hotel from our room, so we had to sleep with ear plugs.
Review 10:The staff were very friendly, the breakfast was delightful, and the room was clean and comfortable.
Review 11:The whole transaction from arrival to departure felt very serious and brief compared to most places I have been. I've had a better conversation and service during my last haircut than my entire stay here. The host, hidden away in her office, along with her demeanor made me feel that she wanted nothing to do with me and was just happy we had paid. The soundproofing just plain out-right, sucked. A noisy common area made it difficult for me to get to sleep and I heard people talking + phone alarms going off the next morning.
Review 12:Once the noise in the common area dispersed, I did honestly have a nice night sleep. However, that could be more to do with the hectic day that I had. The toilet facilities were refreshingly efficient. And the location was also very nicely stowed away from the main road with a nice view.
Review 13:We had quite a small room, with the bed being placed next to the declining wall, which felt a tight for me, however the bed was extremely comfy and soft. Apart from that, it was perfectly fine.
Review 14:Beautiful house with cosy decoration. We loved the lounge/living room area upstairs where you can have a cup of tea or coffee and read a book on the couch or meet fellow travellers. Breakfast was awesome too, loved the hering with rye bread. Very friendly owners.
Review 15:Our stay at Bitra was wonderful! The hosts were very friendly and communicative, the guesthouse itself was great - our room was fairly small, but there was a larger lounge with sofas and a water kettle, so you could sit and enjoy a cup of tea. The breakfast was amazing. We had read it was "the best breakfast you could get in Iceland" and it really kept its promise. All in all a wonderful stay in Bitra! We'd love to stay there again next time.
Review 16:Now I've done my fair share of travelling and I've stayed at countless places. Let me share my check-in experience with you. My wife and I killed some time in Selfoss before arriving as my reservation print-out stated that check-in wasn't until 15:00. We pulled up. I got out of the car. I walked up the door and read a small, hand written sign that said "as of Sept 15th, check-in at 16:00". I thought "that's weird, my reservation specifically says 15:00". I walked back to my car and told my wife. Then, I saw a group of people walk out of the house. I thought perhaps that they were other guests but one of them, a lady, began sweeping leaves on the approach. That, to me, was a sure indication that she was in a position to greet me. So I walked up to her and politely said "hello there, I have a reservation for tonight". She put her broom down, said "mhmmm!" Turned her back on me, tapped her finger on the little hand written sign and walked into the house. I didn't know if I was supposed to follow her or go back into my car. Whom I presume was her husband, gestured me into the house. He was nice enough. So I hesitantly walked in and stood by the sign that says "take off your shoes". She walked into her office, again, without any indication that I should follow her or that I am even welcome at this point. She shouted "what's your name?!" And again, whom I presume is her husband, gestured me into her office and said "she's waiting for you". Okay, so I walked into the office and she was in there, sitting at her desk like I had just arrived for my interview. I made an attempt to reverse the awkward effects of our initial contact by saying "I'm sorry, I was unaware that check-in is at 16:00. My online booking receipt says 15:00". Her response; "hmmm well it should be 16:00. Sign here". She promptly gave me my key and began to walk upstairs.
Review 17:The breakfast.
Review 18:Rooms were a bit small for two people with luggage. It may be easier for backpackers.
Review 19:The staff were very nice and helpful. The breakfast was perfect, and the bed was comfy.
Review 20:Our room was a damp cellar hole with mold on the walls. There is absolutely no sound proofing and the wooden doors make a lot of noise when opened and closed, so you will be aware whenever somebody goes to the toilet in the night. The pictures shown on booking.com seem to be digitally altered. We had booked for two nights but had to leave after our first night. The staff reacted very "shocked" about our early leave but did not offer a refund for the unused night (and we also did not ask for anything - I did not really care). All in all not worth the money and very poor customer service. The next night we stayed in a clean newly built apartment hotel for the same money (but excluding breakfast).
Review 21:Nothing
Review 22:We stayed for two nights at this place. The first night we had a room on the upper floor and it was perfect - new rooms, nice and cozy lounge area. The second night we stayed at the lower floor and our experience was different - the area is worn down and looks very much like a cellar turned into rooms which are small and not as comfortable. After reading other reviews I can see that you have two very different points of view from other guests and I can understand why. All in all, we recommend this guesthouse but make sure to choose the room on the upper floor.
Review 23:Good breakfast, friendly owners, clean rooms and bathrooms
Review 24:We felt very welcome and the hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was nice and clean. The served breakfast exceeded the expected standard by far! Best buffet we've had on our trip!
Review 25:There was only one shower&bathroom and one bathroom on the floor so sometimes there was a wait to use them, extra bathroom and shower available one floor down. A car is needed to get to the place as it is located outside Selfoss itself and along the ring road (however there is s lovely view from all the rooms!).
Review 26:Great and homey place. Lovely owners and a great breakfast of fruit, breads, meats, cheeses, homemade jams and more. The place feels like a home and the rooms are warm, cozy and clean. Definitely would stay there again!
Review 27:You really need a car for getting to Selfoss (for dinner or shopping). But thats also obiously when you read the discription ;)
Review 28:We stayed at the Bitra Guesthouse for nine days. From the first day on, the hosts were very friendly!! Every day we had conversations about our plans and always we got really usefull advices. We discovered the south of Iceland from this guesthouse and it was perfect. We had a room with a private bathroom and it was like the discription on booking.com. We dont understand the comments about missing things like TV or kitchen...you have a discription and know what is included and whats is not!!!
Review 29:We spent 1 night on the ground floor. Room was cold when we arrived, but every minutes become warmer and warmer... however room is not so cozy as we thought when sow the pictures of the home. I am not sure why, but each single piece of cake, egs, banana has been cuted on half or three parts - economy ?
Review 30:Beutifull farm on our way to Geysirs, Common areas and dining room are nice and cozy. You can take a rest on common area on the ground floor if You want. Sharing bathroms are not a problem - are clear and in very good condition. Very friendly owners really like their "job".
Review 31:1) There was no soundproofing, so all the noises in the guesthouse could be heard at all hours of the night. 2) Old,tired furniture in the room (old heaters which were difficult to adjust- heater knob in the bathroom was broken) and old fittings in the bathroom - bathroom wasn't very well designed i.e. it was difficult to get to the mirror. 4) No TV in the room. 5) No mini fridge. 6) We came back during the day to change clothes and found the place locked up. The owner decided to go out and did not leave a not or key to the front door. 7) Owners standing over people at breakfast, looking at what they are consuming and how much food they are putting on their plates. Very uncomfortable. 8) Location - away from Selfoss town centre (10-15min drive).
Review 32:1) Double room was spacious, it was easy for two people to fit in there with their luggage. 2) Bed was very comfortable. 3) Free WiFi access. 4) There was no kettle in the room, but there was a kettle in the common area, so hot water was available 24hrs per day. 5) Breakfast was included in the room price.
Review 33:This is a large, beautiful home with very welcoming hosts. The rooms were very comfortable and "homey". There were 2 toilets to accomodate the floor and there didn't seem to be any issues. I loved these hosts and sorry I don't recall their names but the wife did our laundry as we desperately needed clean clothes and the husband was so awesome in waking us to see the northern lights. It's evident that these hosts want to share all of Iceland with their guests. Although we were only there 1 night, we felt very welcomed and comfortable. Breakfast was great and they recommended a cheap pizza place in town. I would highly recommend this home!
Review 34:The location is not the best, 15 minutes from Selfoss, guesthouse is alone and there are not many activities to do around. But it´s close to the Golden Circle.
Review 35:The personal is really very nice and friendly and there are very tasty breakfast. Wide choice with some homemade bread. Room is nice and clean, wifi was working well.
Review 36:The people in the room next to us were sooo loud but that really can't be helped.
Review 37:The couple that run this guest house are very nice and gave us some great dinner advice. The guest house was very clean and I loved staying on the farm. It's a short drive to selfoss which was great for us. Yummy breakfast included and good value for money.
Review 38:Nothing. Everything was great.
Review 39:Everything was great expecially the breakfast. The location is also nice, although a bit hard to fund in the dark, if you're not used to Iceland yet)
Review 40:The owners were the nicest people I've ever met, and this was one of the most pleasant stays I've ever had anywhere. The best breakfast we had in Iceland, absolutely stay here. It's a great central location for a series of day trips, to vik, thjorsa river, reykjanes... I would rate bitra a 20 out of 10 if I could...love you guys thanks.
Review 41:We chose the room with the shared bathroom but on a whole floor of quitea few rooms (it was fully booked), expect some waiting.
Review 42:Charming little stop over on the ring road and a short drive away fromthe small town of Selfoss. Room was very clean and neat and out hostswere very very welcoming. But the best thing about Bitra was thebreakfast. The breakfast. Homemade jams and skyr were really awesome!Would totally recommend the place to anyone.
Review 43:I do not know what was it, but everything seemed very loud for us. I personally could not sleep very much, because every step and word that was done in the hallway could be heard all too well in our room. Maybe we just had too light sleep.
Review 44:Staff was very nice and friendly. Right from the first moment we felt ourselves very comfortable and like at home. Breakfast was delicious - it wasn't nothing special, but it just tasted so good. Room was comfortable and clean.
Review 45:It's pretty far out of Selfoss and the GPS seemed to be unable to find the address so it was hard to get to.
Review 46:Very comfortable room. Everything was clean. The hairdryer in the bathroom was nice to have. Breakfast was good. The owner was very helpful in planning my route for the next day
Review 47:This guesthouse is typically the kind of that you'd like to avoid after a long driving day. First of all, the hosts are not welcoming at all. Once you step in, you realize that the only thing they care about is making money. From the outside the house doesn't look properly maintained and once you get in your feeling is confirmed. We had a room in the basement that seemed not to have been renovated since the 90´s. Honestly, paying 21000 isk for such a room is outrageous.
Review 48:Rien
Review 49:too many signs posted around of DO's and Don't...
Review 50:Nicely set alone at cross roads between the golden triangle and the south. Easy to find and comfortable. We've been lucky to admire the AURORE BOREALE just above the property. Breakfast was a magic time and tasteful. Owner helpful with plenty advises.
Review 51:No cooking allowed. This didn't bother us as we enjoyed visiting town for evening meal.
Review 52:You must have a car to stay here. It is on a lovely property on the ring road about 10 km to closest town.
Review 53:Excellent breakfast. This B and B really tries. Curried herrings aren't everyone's idea of an ideal breakfast but I thought they were wonderful. (They aren't mandatory!) Thank you so much!
Review 54:The bathroom is in need of some renovation, but was clean.
Review 55:Loved the cozy atmosphere. Everyone was very kind, and made our stay feel like being home. Loved all the homemade ingredients at breakfast! A great way to start our day. It was also the best sleep we had during our trip
Review 56:I liked everything about this guesthouse!
Review 57:The view around us was spectacular. The house stood alone on a high hill, surrounded by stands of trees and horses milling about the property. The hosts were very kind, and had just rescued a group of campers that had been rained out of their camping accommodations. This was a terrific place to stay for travels along Highway 1. On our floor, we had a choice of gender specific bathrooms or one co-ed bathroom. The bedding and decor were very attractive. There was a tray of teas and coffee available at all times.
Review 58:Absolutely the best location of all the guesthouses my girlfriend and I stayed in while in Iceland. Right off the golden ring, Bitra is a great place to stop and the views from the rooms are fantastic. We enjoyed a full spread for breakfast and the staff was generally very nice.
Review 59:The host was very unwelcoming. When we arrived, it felt like she viewed us as a business transaction, not as guests. When I asked if we could eat breakfast early the next day-- just eat the cereal that is left out-- she gave us a hard time. She wanted to know why we were leaving early and told us no because she had a bad experience with some other guests. I had to ask her again and finally she said that she would leave some food upstairs for us to eat in the room... and that she has a house full of guests and so we have to be very quiet... even though we were. I have never been treated this way by a B&B host!! At least she made a nice little breakfast for us in the morning-- but her attitude ruined our stay. I would not go back.
Review 60:The view was nice, at least for our room.
Review 61:- Room very small - Found blood on my blanket - Only one bathroom for 9 bedrooms
Review 62:- Excellent breakfast - Very nice staff - Nice view and environment
Review 63:No access to the kitchen.
Review 64:Very friendly staff. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the two Spanish "chicas" were great. Great location for exploring the Golden circle.
Review 65:Everything was perfect. Really friendly owners. Clean and nice guesthouse. Very delicious breakfast. Good place, easy to find. We wish you good luck ;)
Review 66:The hosts seemed to have had bad experience in the past since they were very restrictive of what we could do, always keeping an eye on us.
Review 67:The breakfeast was mostly home made and very good. The rooms were clean and provided with a good internet connection.
Review 68:The breakfast was so far our best Icelandic breakfast, plenty of choice and a wide variety of homemade delicatessen (curry herrings were terrific!). The b&b is on the top of a hill surrounded by a little river with horses and sheep all around. The room was small but well-furnished and there were the right amount of bathrooms. Wifi was ok. The owners were lovely.
Review 69:The owners are very nice and enthusiastic about their local breakfast. We had a shared bathroom, but beacause of the low season, it was private after all.
Review 70:There was no double bed option or we weren't given one if any. Twin beds we got weren't that comfortable.
Review 71:A great stay right on the main road. The owner couple is lovely and informative. The breakfast is a great addition.
Review 72:Stayed 3 nights and it was perfectly located for doing the Golden Circle. The owners were really friendly and helpful with advice on what to see and do when the weather wasn't so great. Delicious breakfast and very clean and comfortable rooms and bathrooms. Internet worked well in both bedroom and communal areas. Throughly recommend this guesthouse!
Review 73:It was by far the best night stay of our week long trip to Iceland. We felt very welcomed and very well fed! We will for sure stay there again...we are already planning our second trip to Iceland!
Review 74:Very nice, very friendly. The host even brushed off the new snow off the vehicles in the morning while the complimentary continental breakfast was laid out.
Review 75:Uhm, 2 minor drawbacks: 1. Wifi coverage in house could be better. 2. Not possible to prepare your own food, though that matches the B&B formula. Luckily there are enough places to eat in Selfoss (less than 10 min drive)
Review 76:Run by a friendly and helpful couple who put a smile on your face. Cosy guesthouse, good beds, splendid breakfast and ideal location. Returned to this place when heading back from the east to Reykjavik. Again an excellent stay.
Review 77:The only down fall is the wifi. It doesn't work so well in the rooms. The social areas has better reception. This is a minor downfall as you can expect that any b'n'b/hotel in the middle of Iceland will have limited internet connection. Please stay here for 2 nights. 1 is not enough to see the region and the northern lights.
Review 78:This b'n'b worked out better than what we were expecting. It was in the middle of the golden circle and the southern coast. It made two days worth of car travel achievable. The staff are incredibly friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was very good and it remained out for the majority of the morning. Check out was late and flexible. Best nights sleep ice had in a long time. Very clean.
Review 79:The four of us wanted to stay there for longer but had to go due to having an itinerary to follow! :)
Review 80:Beautiful house in a remote but easy-to-find location. Friendly and helpful owners. Delicious breakfast. Delightful decor.
Review 81:Wifi was pretty weak. We could only access it downstairs in the dining room and it was still only a half strength signal. Other than that, it was fabulous!
Review 82:Our hosts were so generous and friendly. We arrived during a severe weather alert from the government that prohibited travel. Our hosts made us aware of the danger, extended breakfast and allowed us to check out late to wait out the storm.
Review 83:The Wi-fi connection really bad. Somehow I couldn't connect at all on my phone. My husband connected after many attempts but the connection was really bad. The rooms are in the basement so that might be a case...
Review 84:The location is good only if you have a car. Great place to spot northern lights ( we didn't have that luck...). The owners are really nice and very chatty. The breakfast was really great! We were actually the only guests during the night and been upgraded to the room with own bathroom that was really nice:) downstairs where the rooms are located very nice and cozy sitting room! Loved the tea/coffee facilities available at all the times!
Review 85:The rooms and common areas could use some updating.
Review 86:The hosts were very nice and friendly. They gave us a bunch of maps of the area for free. Also we reserved a room with shared bathroom but they put us in a room with a bathroom. Breakfast was great and plentiful.
Review 87:To reach the guesthouse you have to have a car. The w-lan was slow.
Review 88:It was very easy to find (by car) as it is clearly recognizable and it is just next to route 1. A great guesthouse hold by a very friendly, kind and helpful couple who knows how to treat (traveling) guests. We were surprised how inviting and tasteful the outdoor and indoor of the house have been arranged. We felt very comfortable and slept like angels. The breakfast was really really nice! We definitely would book them again!
Review 89:These are the kind of hosts who make your stay exceptional! Very friendly and the breakfast spread was very generous and included homemade jams that were delicious. The rooms were beautiful and beds comfortable. Shared bathrooms were immaculate. The lounge area is comfy and has tea, books, and a television. There isn't an area to cook, but town is only a 10-minute drive away. It's a peaceful and beautiful location. We will be back!
Review 90:We missed the small sign on the road coming from one direction. But it is the house on the little hill by the road with a few trees around it.
Review 91:Fantastic breakfast, very clean and functional. A communal room and tea making facilities available as well, so everything you really need for a well earned rest.
Review 92:The Wi-Fi was slow, some cooking facilities would be nice (at least a microwave) but the breakfast made up for it.
Review 93:Amazing breakfast with home made things; staff, free tea and coffee, beautiful location.
Review 94:Selfoss is a 10 minute drive away. Just one bathroom for eight rooms on top floor and again one bathroom for eight rooms on bottom floor. There is another on the middle but I did not find it.
Review 95:Very good breakfast and very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 96:Only real issue was the shared facilities, as we had to wait for the toilet in the morning: there were 2 in total that I could find (there was a sign saying that this is another but I couldn't find it), one with the shower.
Review 97:Room was small but comfy, breakfast was really good, the seating area with tea was just what we needed. Closeness to Selfoss is convenient enough for grocery shopping.
Review 98:Everything was perfect
Review 99:Great place and wholesome tasty breakfast.
Review 100:Friendly staff, good breakfast~nice interior!!
Review 101:Very quiet. Great nights sleep and a wonderful breakfast spread!
Review 102:Friendly host, plentiful breakfast
Review 103:"Forbidden" to cook and no restaurant nearby. With car no problem.
Review 104:Comfort stay and very good breakfast!
Review 105:Very nice spot. Comfortable accommodations, and I really enjoyed the breakfast
Review 106:Hospitable owner, nothing to complain about.
Review 107:Nice location in the middle of the nature. Delicious breakfast.
Review 108:The owners are very welcoming.
Review 109:Beautiful B&B with free wifi and plenty of bathroom and showers for all, complimentary delicious breakfast, friendly owners, close to town!
Review 110:Great b'fast. Host woke us up (after 1st asking us when we checked in) to see the Northern lights! THANKYOU!!
Review 111:A little bit noisy
Review 112:Owners were very nice and friendly, delicious breakfast, especially herring) The kettle with tea in lounge.
Review 113:staff was rather unfriendly small bathroom very thin walls
Review 114:location price easy accessibility no kitchen
Review 115:Amazing setup on a hill in the middle of the plains, very comfortable beds, great breakfast.
Review 116:Very friendly owners, great breakfast (the homemade marmelade is delicious!) and very comfortable bed!
Review 117:lovely horse on site, great breakfast
Review 118:Lovely location out in countryside. Great intersection between Golden Circle and south road and highlands road.
Review 119:The basement rooms seemed damp and had an off smell
Review 120:Common areas were stylishly decorated with care, breakfast was good
