Reviews for Birta Guesthouse
Review 1:This place was spectacular! Fully equipped kitchen. Spacious Bathrooms. Big rooms. Cody interior and perfect location. The best place yet on our ring road tour of Iceland!! Thank you so much!!!
Review 2:There really was nothing bad about this place. If you're going to Egilsstadir, this is the place to stay.
Review 3:This guesthouse is the perfect place to stay if you like a clean, quiet, and convenient. They let us check in early and even helped us track weather as a storm approached. The showers are hot and sulphur-free. Free tea and espresso, too!
Review 4:After really great breakfasts elsewhere in Iceland, this was a step down. No double bed option.
Review 5:It was an easy walk to a great restaurant and useful shopping. Facilities, including the kitchen and sitting area, are great.
Review 6:Very nice place to stay! It was busy but not loud, very clean, lots of washrooms to use and it had a great kitchen! Added bonus, the host was there when we arrived which was a nice treat as this is a rariety in Iceland.
Review 7:It is a pretty spot. We had a very comfortable room with a tv . It was full in the October, with 6 rooms plus kitchen and 3 bathrooms. I was concerned that it would be noisy and that I would not be able to get into the bathroom. No need to worry. The young people all were quiet by 8:30 pm and we were the first up at 8:30 am. Easy access to the bathroom w no wait. Very comfortable night and you can walk to a good restaurant called Salt.
Review 8:It was quite noisy and i felt like i was a student all over again (frat house feeling). The only difference was that everything was clean ;)
Review 9:The bedroom and the shared bathrooms were very clean. There were many bathrooms for the amount of beds! We ordered the breakfast and it was prepared the previous day but it was delicious.
Review 10:Houseflies-there is a problem with them here, as evidenced by the many dead flies swished on the windows and found on the windowsill obviously not cleaned by from the previous guests? I added a several more to the collection. Small room, my bed was too close to the heater to safely turn it on, luckily, still warm so not need but not sure what you would do in winter. Let me preface my comments by saying that on the night that we stayed, there was also a very loud and rude group of 6 adults travelling together who obviously don't know how to behave in shared accommodations. But this experience did highlight the shortcomings in this guesthouse. Shared kitchen-really needs a door to buffer the noise, our fellow guests decided to make dinner at 1030pm and smells and noise did make it impossible to sleep. More soundproofing in the shower rooms. Our fellow guests also took showers from 1030pm to midnight and our room was right beside shower room and it was loud. Also could use bath mats for those who seem to spread 1inch of water all over the floor and maybe a hamper or basket for used towels. Some noise buffering for the upper floor would be good to help with the noise
Review 11:Location was good, we were able to walk to the plaza nearby and have dinner Nice patio at the house that we were able to enjoy in the afternoon
Review 12:Clean, spacious room. We opted for the annex room with a private bathroom, away from the main building which I would say is a good choice if you're looking for privacy and quiet. The room was very well equipped, with a small fridge and a dining area. There was even a small map the owners made with all the local attractions..
Review 13:We were arriving past the 8PM check-in time due to slow traveling (weather). We contacted the owner on Facebook and they provided an easy solution for us. They were very responsive and helpful during our stay.
Review 14:Host didn't say much when they arrived to let us in, a bit of a cold reception after our long drive.
Review 15:Great location near lots of restaurants. Use of kitchen facilities to cook.
Review 16:had room above main entrance where the door phone was VERY loud, several people arrived late and woke me up each time because of the door phone
Review 17:clean and nice
Review 18:A little expensive, only 3 bathrooms for the whole guest house, couldn't get a double bed, no breakfast.
Review 19:Clean, welcoming, easy to find, staff was very friendly and gave lots of suggestions.
Review 20:The floor in the upstairs bathroom does get very wet due to the 'wet-room' design.
Review 21:Host was very helpful. Facilities were clean and beds were very comfortable. Towels were provided including bathrobes.
Review 22:Also, our TV only had one channel. Due to the late hour, we did not inquire if this is as it should be or if there was some issue.
Review 23:First, I would like to thank whoever answered the phone promptly. She was very polite and courteous. I let her know we would be checking in last check in just a few hours more (ended up taking longer on a hike than expected). She made the proper arrangements for us.Shoes come off at the door. I love this--there was no dirt as I walked around barefoot and definitely added to the homey feel. We stayed on the bottom floor. The room was extremely spacious. A cup and mug for each person as well as a towel laid on each bed awaited us. The room and bathrooms (two downstairs, one up) were VERY clean. I usually wear sandals to shower/walk in the bathroom and had no need of it. Bathrobes are available. I will be honest and say that the kitchen was a little dirty, but only in the way my kitchen gets after I do some cooking (we arrived late--after 21:00--so I assume the other guests cooked). The kitchen is well-equipped with a microwave, electric stove, oven, and communal fridge (personal fridges are available in each room). The kitchen also has an espresso machine that includes delicious espresso as well as tea. There are some leftover condiments in the cupboards from what I assume were previous guests. I noted salt and ground white pepper. The mattresses were comfortable. I will mention, however, the pillows. I don't need any pillows to sleep so I was fine, but my mom typically sleeps with two and her single pillow did not suffice. The wifi was strong and worked well--well enough to stream a movie on YouTube even. The walls are not very thin; I was able to keep sleeping without issue as the other guests got up, moved around, and went about their day. Outside, there is a sitting area that we did not get to enjoy.Nearby, there are a handful of restaurants (some are recommended in the book offered in each room). There is also a mechanic nearby in case you get a flat tire, such as we did.
Review 24:nothing
Review 25:I really liked this place, the ower is a really kind person, very clean. One of the best guesthouse in Iceland (for real) as per my comment on the guestbook. :)
Review 26:Great for a night stay. Two singles rather than a double which was a shame. Restaurant two doors away called Neilsens which served the most unbelievable lamb. Cannot recommend more highly
Review 27:The drainage in the showers was awful. The water covered the whole floor after a 10 minute shower. Location was good aside from the festival and loudspeakers that were in the field up the street for hours. Neighbors blaring music for a short time.
Review 28:Liked having the mini fridge in the room. Coffee included is always a positive thing. The place was immaculate. Having clean robes available was a really nice touch.
Review 29:Had trouble checking-in, staff wouldn't respond to the doorbell. I'm generally not a fan of sharing bathrooms with other couples. Staff was also in the rooms and cleaning before checkout time which was kind of annoying.
Review 30:Good location in Egilsstadir. Clean with shared bathrooms and plenty of towels. Large shared kitchen on the first floor.
Review 31:Nearby restaurants are full, go on time or be prepared to queue.
Review 32:Our room was in a separate building. Very quiet, clean, warm and modern, with all the necessary for overnight staying and for own breakfast. Bed, blankets and pillows were very comfortable. The bathroom and shower were functional, but still well designed. I can recommend, this was the best overnight stay in Iceland.
Review 33:The landlord was very gentle at the reception and he explained us with a lot of detail what we could do around because the tourist office was closed Spacious bathrooms, 1 bathroom every 2 rooms, excellent!! Fridge and TV set in every room Comfortable rooms and kitchen well furnished and equiped. Excellend value for the money
Review 34:Lits inconfortable, chambre bruyante en face de la cuisine et des salles de bain
Review 35:Guest house très sympathique, grande cuisine commune et grandes salles de bains bien equipées, très bien localisée
Review 36:My wife didn't like the coffee: not strong enough. But when you get down to that kind of small complaints, nothing really stands out.
Review 37:The attention to details
Review 38:we stayed in one of the Annex rooms with private bath and entrance. It was great to have our own space! Also had access to the main kitchen, but we didn't use it. Staff was friendly and easy to reach if needed. Great location to reach all of the small towns in the area as well!
Review 39:kitchen area can get a bit crowded when the house is full breakfast didn't look like much, better to prep your own in the kitchen
Review 40:nice house, all new and clean ,
Review 41:Our room in the annex was spotless, chic, and comfortable. We loved having access to the main kitchen, but the convenience of our own private bathroom. The hosts were friendly and communicative.
Review 42:6 rooms, 12 to 14 people in house, sometimes the three full bathrooms weren't enough. a half bathroom with just a toilet would have made things more comfortable during high shower times. also another guest fried fish in the communal kitchen and that smell was with us the rest of our time there...but that is more the fault of that guest than our host.
Review 43:Our room had a kettle and fridge. Host very helpful. Right across street from Museum, a short walk to Nielsen Cafe.
Review 44:The people who own the property need to check you in, and there is a narrow check in between 4 and 8pm. It is only a small concern, but just be aware.
Review 45:Nice and clean, comfortable rooms. We had tea making facilities in the room, which is always welcome. We could make coffee in the kitchen area. It was shared bathroom, but we had no trouble getting into the bathroom as there was only a few couples staying and there are 3 bathrooms. Good restaurant close by for dinner
Review 46:On the more expensive end of the Icelandic accommodation options.
Review 47:Nice owner. We had a larger room and it was very comfortable. We had a good stay overall.
Review 48:Very friendly helpful owner, comfortable seating area upstairs, large, warm bathrooms with plenty of towels and bathmats. Well equipped kitchen with lots of extra useful little touches.
Review 49:This was very nice guesthouse, it was our 3rd stop on the ring road trip. The rooms are clean and modern, ditto for bathrooms. They supply plenty of towels & bathrobes. well equipped. Overall enjoyable stay.
Review 50:Nothing, I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it.
Review 51:Location is great, close to gas, groceries and the ring road. There I a sign on the maim street which made it very easy to find. Loved the little table and chairs in my room, there was also coffee and tea with kettle and mini-fridge in the room as well. Very friendly hosts. Nice and quiet as well, and little extras in the WC such as hair dryer which are thoughtful.
Review 52:Ventilation of the room and insulation of windows was insufficent. In the morning all the windows were dripping of moisture.
Review 53:Well equipped facilities and clean shared bathroom.
Review 54:So far in my trip my favouriteafter 4 nites. Clean and neat, helpful owner, fast wifi, veryyyy confortable. Free coffee and tea facilities. Great room and common areas, recommended100%
Review 55:We were on the second floor and had a little hangout spot right outside of our room which was nice. Very easy check-in/out process. After surviving the scariest drive of my life getting to Egilsstadir, this was just the warm cozy bed I needed.
Review 56:A bigger Pan in the kitchen would have been nice, but to be honest, thats just picking. I loved the house!
Review 57:Great Landlord helped with lots of tips about the region, very comfortable beds and a great bathroom
Review 58:There wasn't anything I disliked here.
Review 59:The guesthouse is very homely and everything is very clean and comfortable. For just a few euros more (in winter anyways) than a hostel you get a comfortable bed, bed sheets, towels and nice kitchen at your disposal. You can be assured to get a good nights rest here.
Review 60:My friend was not careful enough and hit his head at the slant roof above the bed. You have to be careful in this kind of room. Entrance is at the back of the house while the car park is in the front, and the path from the front to the back is a bit small, so it was a little difficult to get our big luggage from the car, especially in the snow.
Review 61:Cute, compact, white room. Cute living room area. Large bathroom with supply of hand towels. Clean and comfy. Got everything I need in the kitchen.
Review 62:Single bed, would have liked a double. Also wi-fi was slow in certain areas but could be fixed with a magnifier. Tv could be bigger with more channels but no big issue there really.
Review 63:location was good and the breakfast was big and diverse. Overall a great experience and exceeded expectations.
Review 64:Place is in the center, parking in front of the place. Rooms are spacious and very clean. Largest shared bathroom I have ever seen. The breakfast is excluded but will last you two days.
Review 65:Room had a small fridge and coffee and tea making facilities. After travelling around Iceland, having a television in your room with more than one channel is a luxury. Plenty of plug points in the room. Comfy bed. Clean & warm (if you're going in winter) bathroom.
Review 66:Got a choice between a kingsize bed, or two singlebed then vwe booked, but seems like they only had rooms with single bed. Only thing who was "bad" ;) Great place to stay!
Review 67:the girl who worked there was there when we arrived, but after we and one other couple who was staying there had arrived, she left, and we got the house to our self. four rooms upstairs and four (I think) downstairs, and a bathroom on each floor. Breakfast was ready for us on a tray in the refrigerator, and it was all we needed. also there was a coffee machine we could use for free. good WiFi
Review 68:We arrived late however the staff had arranged for our entry into the premisies with minimal fuss. They facilities are of a high quality and more than enough to go around.
Review 69:we really enjoyed our stay in this hotel, the staff was very friendly, the room and the shared bathroom fairly big. Had all tge facilities what we needed.
Review 70:great property clean & fresh decor friendly management not much going on in Egilsstadir in the off season, but Birta Guesthouse was an nice quiet retreat on a very busy Ring Road tour
Review 71:Nothing. Everything was good. No problems at all.
Review 72:For some reasons the payment didn't go thought and we both figure that out when I already left Iceland. They didn't put any rush about that. I had to call them twice to make sure I was able to pay…The owner is pretty mellow, place is nice and clean. Probably one of the best place where I stayed in the entire island
Review 73:For the price, breakfast could have been included.
Review 74:Host is very friendly. The bathroom was huge; everything (rooms, kitchen) was clean. Easy to find in a friendly town.
Review 75:The guest house is great, nothing to say against :-) Egilsstadir is not the most lively city, but a good point to stop along the way.
Review 76:Nice house, comfortable rooms, access to well equipped kitchen, several bathrooms. Great accommodation!
Review 77:Great place to get to after traveling when you want a very clean place with amenities. Lovely place on a quaint street. Next to Restauarnt Nielsen which was fantastic as well.
Review 78:That we only stayed for one night - seriously exceeded expectations.
Review 79:Check in super easy. Just press the button on the door to get in touch with manager. Clean and inviting setting. Lots of advice about activities. Fast Wifi Breakfast looked delicious and to be good value compared to most places we stayed in Iceland.
Review 80:Makes you feel as if you live in an authentic Icelandic home. White, clean, cozy. Good kitchen facilities. Excellent shower in the big white bathroom with a window. Good breakfast.
Review 81:Breakfast is very bad; just some random stuff bought at discount. Bed are good, but you wouldnt have good sleep quality. At same price or less there's a lot of better guesthouse!!
Review 82:Bathroom are clean, rooms are small but confortable. Good position, you can Enjoy silence even if road is near.
Review 83:you really have to take terms to have breakfast. the kitchen is quite small and offers room to 8 people. we were with 5 so we had to wait for the kitchen
Review 84:location was super, near restaurant nielssen were you can eat very nice reindeer. rooms were clean and the house looked cosy
Review 85:The walls weren't very soundproof. We could hear our neighbors' and downstairs conversations.
Review 86:Each room came with its own TV, refrigerator, and small table. Great location right off of the Ring Road in Egilsstadir; close to grocery shops, restaurants, etc. Bed was comfortable and facilities were clean.
Review 87:Breakfast tray was limited in choice
Review 88:Very friendly owner. Extremely helpful and willing to answer "tourists questions". Comfortable, clean shared bathroom.
Review 89:The young girl who checked us in wasn't very friendly or welcoming. Wifi really didn't work in the rooms, you had to go down to the kitchen. Like most guesthouses in Iceland, the walls were pretty thin.
Review 90:Very clean rooms and bathrooms. Location was good for a quick walk into town.
Review 91:Don't pay for the breakfast (I didn't, but I saw the pre-made breakfast plates in the refrigerator for other guests - not worth the 10 EUR!). We paid about $278 for two nights, which seems pricey for a small town with few activities in East Iceland! Our room was over the front door where there's a call box to reach the on-duty manager, so we heard guests arriving and leaving. The walls also are quite thin - our neighbor came and complained about our television noise. The MAIN problem we had was with the WiFi. When we stayed there (June 19-21), it was painfully slow, to the point where I could not even use email and had to drive to the N1 station to use their WiFi instead. I thought perhaps it was another guest using the bandwidth or a poor connection, but even when I had 5 bars, pages didn't load at all. We mentioned the issue to the on-duty manager and she agreed that the internet was problematic (but didn't say she'd investigate it!), so I emailed the owners, who said they would have the internet provider look into the issue. However, the internet was not fixed by the morning when we left, so we were not able to do ANY further planning for our Ring Road journey while we stayed at Birta. I almost feel like we should have been compensated for the internet issue, especially since we had just come from a "rental apartment" in Höfn where neither TV nor internet was functioning (another Booking.com property) and the owner gave us a full refund for the night's stay!
Review 92:The location is great for heading into Egilsstaðir to find shops and restaurants. Our room (upstairs) had a giant, beautiful window which made our room very bright, but there was a blackout shade as well for the midnight sun. All three of the shared bathrooms were sparkling clean and our beds were incredibly comfortable. Our room had a little refrigerator and guests can use the kitchen downstairs, so we were able to prepare breakfast in a snap!
Review 93:Relatively clean with shared bathrooms. Comes with kitchen, TV and WiFi. Less than 3 mins drive away from the town centre.
Review 94:Nice staff and location.
Review 95:The host was extremely helpful and considerate.
Review 96:Good location, nice to be in a seperate annex
Review 97:Lots of lovely walks to go on nearby, helpful owner, very nice and clean room and bathroom, cute house with a little tree house outside
Review 98:Cleanness, good home made breakfast
Review 99:Very small beds
Review 100:The cleaness
Review 101:Rooms are a little small to get around and lay your case out.
Review 102:Great location next to the lake, very picturesque. Staff are very helpful and polite.
Review 103:The only form of communication to the staff is through an intercom near the front door.
Review 104:Great rooms, nice kitchen.
Review 105:Quiet. Clean. Comfortable twin room.
Review 106:well equipped kitchen cleqan spacious rooms
Review 107:WIFI didn't work
