Reviews for Hotel Excelsior San Marco
Review 1:The spa bath (personal thing, I just find them creepy), the heating was impossible to turn down, but we could open the window, as it's a quiet area. Parking is quite pricey - 15€. But these are pretty minor quibbles.
Review 2:Smart hotel very near the foot of the funicular to the old town, which is the major tourist attraction, and a short walk from the main shopping area (it's difficult to be really near both!). Pleasant helpful concierges, good breakfast spread, comfortable room (we were upgraded), 3 readily available lifts!! The area around the hotel is primarily residential, so it's quiet at night. Though the hotel's top floor restaurant is very expensive, there is a decent -looking reasonably priced restaurant next door (we didn't try it, but it looked fine). Parking in front of hotel.
Review 3:On the whole all was ok.When we come back to Bergamo we will use this hotel again.
Review 4:Good Breakfast Friendly staff at reception Cleanilness Good location of Hotel
Review 5:Cleaning and general condition of the room (e.g. bed is not so comfortable, walls have some stains, etc.) can be improved
Review 6:Excellent location and good breakfast
Review 7:The room was far too hot and the only way to reduce the temperature was to turnoff the radiator and open the balcony door!
Review 8:Lovely central situation. Well furbished hotel. Breakfast was lovely unfortunately could not sample restaurant in evening as it was closed for the holidays.
Review 9:The hotel has excellent location : immediate approach to down town funicular and to the modern city centre. Parking options : inside and outside. Big and convenient rooms. All facilities are very clean and in good order. Breakfast is good but contains everything you need.
Review 10:Price per night was very expensive for what it was offered. In this price (85+6 euros)it should at least include an extra meal. The staff wasn't so warm. The day we were about to leave they tried to charge us 15 euros for a parking space while we didn't use this facility and we didn't have a car. Also the city taxes were written in small letters so it was an extra charge we didnt expect. In the breakfast i expected a fresh orange juice not concentrated. Finally, from train station by foot it takes around twelve minutes to get to the hotel and not two minutes as it is described.
Review 11:The location was very nice, our room had a great view to the old city and it was very comfortable and clean.Breakfast was satisfying,it had lots of fresh fruits and a small variety of goods.
Review 12:the price of supper at roof garden resturant was through the roof. In general the hotel seemed to charge too much. The ironing service is also pricey, it's not dry cleaning was does flattening a shirt or two Cost 40 euro ?
Review 13:We very much liked the location and the view that the hotel provided, and the wifi theoughout the hotel
Review 14:Good size room, very quiet, great breakfast included - both hot and cold dishes. Great location near the furnicular and walking distance to the new city. Staff were helpful and friendly. Great city to celebrate New Year's.
Review 15:None.
Review 16:Staff very friendly and helpful. Room spacious and very clean. Really good variety at breakfast. Close to Citta Alta and also city centre. Our stay covered Christmas and the lunch in the Rooftop Garden Restaurant was exceptional.
Review 17:The place was clean but I found the room and bar area to be a bit on the cold side. Staff were very friendly and the hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the city centre which is ok if the weathers dry...
Review 18:On uppest accomodation floor noise from moving furnitures of top floor restaurant lasted up to midnight. It was impossible to sleep!
Review 19:Breakfast was quite nice.
Review 20:Very expensive room service;
Review 21:The proximity of the old city on the hill and the opera theater; beautiful views from both restaurants (first floor and roof); I was here the second time and I will certainly come back
Review 22:The hotel is advertised as having air conditioning in all rooms, however when we stayed at the end of October it had been turned off, centrally by reception staff. When we asked for the air conditioning to be re activated in our room, as it was extremely hot and uncomfortable (the radiator in the bathroom was on, and the controls were broken!) we were told that this would not be possible - hotel policy! We slept with the door/window open on both nights, and I was bitten by a moscito on the second evening. This was our second stay at the hotel (had stayed here fifteen years previously) and our last. Reception staff not at all helpful.
Review 23:Excellent housekeeping service, room was cleaned to a very high standard.
Review 24:The heating was not very responsive to the control, we thought. We turned it off opened the window a bit :-) Beds a bit concave from wear.
Review 25:Friendly staff, helpful and accomodating. Nice rooms. Great value!
Review 26:Rooms were quite warm and couldn't operate AC as there was no power to controller, not sure why but the same thing in colleagues room
Review 27:Hotel was really nice and located in a great location close to many shops, restraunts & bars.
Review 28:All children older than 6 years pay 50 euros per night obligatory, even if it is mentioned that only pay if they use an extra bed
Review 29:Very good position, good breakfast
Review 30:Unfortunately our room looked over the back of the hotel, we needed to keep the patio doors open at night as air conditioning was not working, this meant we were woken very early every morning with delivery vans.
Review 31:Fabulous location, stylish decor and friendly staff. Room was comfortable and bathroom spotless. Great breakfast selection.
Review 32:This is an efficiently run business hotel that meets the requirements but does not shine. Perfectly adequate, but not designed to "Wow" the client.
Review 33:Slightly away from restaurants but as there were two of us we walked, and it was still light in the evenings
Review 34:The room was clean, staff very friendly and helpful, close to station and Bergamo alta
Review 35:None
Review 36:The staff were very helpful and the room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent and the hotel location is ideally positioned for daily visits to both the high and low towns as well as train access to Milan and the lakes
Review 37:Room was on the small size for two people. The Rooftop restaurant was too expensive for our budget and no alternative in the hotel for dinner.
Review 38:The location, the area, hotel breakfast, the hotel staff especially lady who looked after our room on Tuesday 6th Oct. Comfortable beds and made up as requested.
Review 39:A staff member barged into our room to check the mini bar. He knocked once and came right in before we had a chance to respond. We thought this was very inappropriate from a privacy standpoint, but we let him do his job as we were leaving within a half hour. We should've bolted our door again after returning from breakfast, but does not excuse his invasion of our privacy.
Review 40:Breakfast selections were very nice.
Review 41:I had a room at the back of the hotel. The layout of the room mean't that the tv was too far away from the bed. It was my third time at the hotel and the last time the manager commented that the next time I would have a balcony. It was only for the night so it didn't really matter.
Review 42:Location, staff and breakfast.
Review 43:First night the room was unsuitable for disabled and was moved following morning (my own fault). The shower in this room had very black and dirty looking grouting.
Review 44:Great location close to Citta Alta and other attractions. Friendly, helpful staff, Room was spacious with good air con.breakfast was good.
Review 45:Maybe it would be good idea to provide facilities (eg. in the breakfast room) to be able to have a light lunch or supper in the hotel.
Review 46:Nothing to add, everything was extremely good.
Review 47:Perfectly situated 5 minute walk to funicular up to Bergamo Old Town. Room with views up to the Old Town. Wonderful dinner in roof top restaurant. Great breakfast on first floor terrace. Excellent value for money!
Review 48:The bathroom is particularly small and badly organised. No way, if you are a little bit large, to enter the shower wedged between the wall and the wash-hand basin.
Review 49:all except the bathroom
Review 50:Nothing. Wifi was a bit slow at times.
Review 51:This was my second stay in the San Marco and it was even better than the first. The view from the room was spectacular, the proximity to the funicular was an added bonus. The staff kindly organised transport for us to and from San Pellegrino Terme.
Review 52:An ideal location, close to the Citta Alta and very convenient for the railway station and airport bus. Staff very helpful and able to answer any query we threw at them. We would happily stay at this hotel again.
Review 53:Great location near both the shopping streets in the city and the old town up in the mountains. Great breakfast and nice rooms. I really recommend this hotel!
Review 54:- Wifi was not connecting right away but when it got connected, worked fine
Review 55:- The location was perfect if you want to discover the old town. - Easy to access with car (own parking lot infront of the hotel with access only to hotel customers, also own garage which I didn't use) - Area is right in the city but still quite calm - Clean, big and good rooms
Review 56:While the reception hall was renovated and looks quite impressive, the corridors at the higher levels of the hotel (where the rooms were located) are a little "stale", e.g. the floor carpet is stained and there is a weird smell in the air.
Review 57:Hotel located close to the walls of the Old Town and funiculare leading to it. Wi-Fi was working exceptionally well. Personel at the reception desk very helpful. Extremely beautiful view from the hotel restaurant.
Review 58:the room which was a superior was a bit small.
Review 59:great location. about a 15 min walk to the station, close to the new town and very close to the fenicolure which will take you to the old town. a lovely roof top restaurant especially if you like fine dining. it has a lovely view of the old town. great selection for breakfast.
Review 60:The San Marco is well located for easy access to both lower and upper towns. Staff are helpful and unobtrusive. Rooms are comfortable and spacious and cleanliness is very good.
Review 61:slow internet
Review 62:everything! proffesional personel, great place, near to old town of Bergamo, safe area, 15 min by foot to the train station. upon arrival, we were lucky to get upgraded room for the same price, thanks!!! interior is old style design, but not outdated.
Review 63:Lovely luxury room in a modern hotel with an airy feel. Staff were very courteous and helpful. The breakfast was excellent with everything you could wish for available.
Review 64:Excellent location for visiting the Upper old medieval city - short walk to the funicular - and for the lower city. Has convenient parking for guests and good breakfast which can be taken on terrace. Ask for room with view of La Citta Alta.
Review 65:When checking-out we had to pay for the bottle of Prosecco which ceremoniously waited for us in the room at the beginning of our stay at Foscari. Not a big deal, just the bitter sensation to realize we thought it a hotel courtesy.
Review 66:Exquisite position, fair accommodation conditions. The Hotel is right on the bank of Canal Grande in the Cannareggio quarter, in the vicinity of the Ca' d'Oro Palace. We booked this hotel as our first get-out following our wedding, that some call it honey-moon. Upon arriving on May 25th, the reception lady suggested us to relocate just for the first night at the next-by Pesaro Palace, which we reluctantly accepted in change for a room with a view on Canal Grande for the rest of the stay. What a treat that was! Pesaro Palace fully deserves its name, a true Venetian palace, with all the luxury attributes you might dream in Venice.
Review 67:Great staff Help with parking of the car and service of handeling the luggage Great breakfast Close to old town with tram Close to new town by foot. 10 minutes Clean, comfy and location is brilliant
Review 68:We thought there was a swimming pool at the hotel and in fact had been told over the phone that there was one very close by before we booked our holiday and the lack on the pool was the only down side of this hotel
Review 69:The staff were very helpful and the location was just right. The hotel its self was clean and bright and a pleasure to stay in
Review 70:The first room the ac did not work adequately and the shower drain was stuffed up and dirty.
Review 71:We had a problem with the first assigned room but were able to change to an acceptable room with persistance.
Review 72:I felt, for a 4 star hotel, tea making facilities should have been provided. The room we stayed in on the 25th was small (3 star) , though the first room we had on the 18th was a lot more comfortable.
Review 73:The receptionist was very professional. Breakfast excellent! So were the waiting staff.
Review 74:The Hotel was staff was very unprofessional as they asked us to take separate room for my 10 year old daughter, although we insisted that she will share our bed. finally they charged for the extra bed without providing it. After all these arguments they have provided a smelly room and lot of dirt on the table, the corridor also were smelly. Totally disappointed with this hotel and staff. The Manger refused to speak when approached to speak about the treatment. Due to this poor hospitality we had to cut short our stay to one day and leave.
Review 75:Rude staff, smelly rooms,Far from the Railway station
Review 76:Room very dark. Air con not up to the job. Shame bar was not in the breakfast area. Would be nice to have a drink on the terrace in the evening
Review 77:Great breakfast. Very comfortable bed.
Review 78:I've stayed at this hotel before and knew it quite well. Location is perfect for old town. We were lucky and got upgraded to a newly renovated room. Hotel has both outside parking and garage for a reasonable price. There is also a very good restaurant at the roof top, a bit pricy though.
Review 79:Air conditioning in the room was rather feeble.
Review 80:Useful location between the train station and the Citta Alta (Upper Town, easily accessed by funicular railway about 5 minutes' walk from the hotel). Excellent breakfast - far more lavish than usual for an Italian hotel.
Review 81:See above before of a fake car park called San Marco not belonging tohotel. Check in first if you need parking they lol direct you to thehot car park.
Review 82:Showers are only problem only 3'x3'access only 2' wide!Suitable for Vietnamese dwarves only. The rest is 4 star
Review 83:I didn't know about additional 14 euro of tax - it would be nice if hotel puts it to information to booking.com.
Review 84:Good location, amazing breakfast, nice view. Room is big, bathroom is also fine.
Review 85:The bathroom needed urgent renovation.
Review 86:Location was great..within minutes walk to cable car for Bergamo Alto. The breakfast was excellent with view of old city..great way to start your day.p
Review 87:The ineffective air conditioning downgrades this hotel enormously. The constant room temperature of 26' C (even at midnight) is not the correct room temperature. Despite several requests to Management and the service of an Engineer/technician there was no improvement. Room comfort for me is reliant on good air conditioning! Also some of the staff at Reception had a rather haughty/superior attitude. Could not get Wifi access in the bedroom.
Review 88:Pity about the air conditioning as otherwise this is a really lovely hotel, very clean, in a terrific location near the Funicular to access the Citte Alta and near to the modern city, shops, restaurants, art galleries, train and bus stations , etc. Appreciated the full length mirror in the bedroom, also the bathroom lighting. Breakfast was varied and plentiful and the staff in the breakfast room were very pleasant and attentive. Bar and restaurants in the hotel are also an advantage.
Review 89:Hotel restaurant shut for a (very) noisy party on Saturday, then closed all Sunday. Hotel advertises sauna, gym, pool. None of these are actually in the hotel, all are charged extra if you try to use the external spa. The hotel advertises overlooking a beautiful park : this is actually the car park!
Review 90:Location is fantastic
Review 91:1. A big, heavy and old-fashioned room key. No electronic system. 2. A safe in a room had also big, long key - you have to carry that long key with you if you wish to store anything in that safe. 3. No shoe cleaning kit (but there are 4 shower caps in a bathroom) and no complementary botteled water offered.
Review 92:1. Location - the hotel is nicely located in a walking distance from train/bus/tramway stations, and to/from Citta Alta feniculare. It sits at a nice square with benches amongs the flowers and grass around. 2. Lobby is spacious, clean and smells nicely. 3. Breakfasts (served on 1st floor) are absolutely fantastic, full of choices, fresh and served in a niace restaurant with a terrace. If the weather is fine you can have your breakfast outside. 4. Staff is helpful and nice. 5. Nice and freshy smell in a room. (only during the first day of stay). 6. Confortable bed with one additional pillow stored in a warderobe.
Review 93:Our bedroom was small, but this reflects in the price but in general every thing was fine.
Review 94:The people in the hotel were very polite and helpful and the rooms are very clean and well looked after.
Review 95:Sky restaurant quite expensive. Starter 20 €, main dish 25, dessert 20. Pity, would be a lovely place viewing the extensions of the Alpes
Review 96:Sky restarant on 8th floor with brillant view on Bergamo.
Review 97:Construction work close to the hotell woke us up before 8. Don't expect a room in the new part if you book late or if you choose a standard room. The performance of the concierge was very poor. He could not fix a simple request to get us an iron and board in the afternoon.
Review 98:The best reason to book this hotel is the location, which is in walking distance to the old town and the main shopping street in Bergamo. The parking just outside the hotel was also convenient.
Review 99:Total lack of air conditioning (broken) in a very hot day (37°). It was nearly unbearable. The guy at the reception said that somebody was fixing it but that did not happen at all while I was there. Some sort of external engines were making big noise all night long (my room was in the back of the building).
Review 100:Location is excellent with possibility of surveyed parking. Breakfast is really very good with a big choice of salty and sweet food. Possibility of having breakfast in the terrace, very nice!
Review 101:There was not one single thing to complain about. I personally love a coffee making facility which is not available but there are numerous cafe's nearby.
Review 102:Excellent location set just beneath the ancient Cite Alta and within walking distance of cultural and elegant districts. The staff are very pleasant and there are some quaint services such as the morning collection of personal laundry by the housekeeper. The hotel is impeccably clean and there is an unhurried and relaxed attitude throughout. Breakfast offers a wide and plentyful variety in a sunny dining room overlooking the city. Truly a super hotel in a perfect location to visit this beautiful town.
Review 103:Roof terrace was only for restaurant customers, it was open only some part of day and receptionist told it's not a bar. Pretty much useless for hotel quests.
Review 104:Great location!
Review 105:Plastic mugs in a hotel room were not very practical. Also simple glazing windows let in a strong feeling of draft - there are shutters though.
Review 106:The restaurant Roof Garden is of a very high standard with food pleasing both to the eye and the palate.
Review 107:The Hotel was in an excellent position for exploring Bergamo being in the lower town but within easy walking distance of the funicular to the upper town. Having a corner room meant there was a good balcony on the south side and a large window on the west side with a marvellous view of the old town. The roof top restaurant was first class.A very comfortable
Review 108:Not enough atmosphere in hotel to keep you in the hotel spending money. Roof garden restaurant grossly under utilized for its fantastic location, could stay open much later even if just for drinks for residence & general public.
Review 109:nice staff, nice location, clean
Review 110:It was all good
Review 111:All staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Room was well decorated and furnished. Good range of TV channels. Rooftop restaurant was fabulous - great view of old city, wonderfulfood and excellent service
Review 112:Great location - on airport bus route. Easy access to La Citta Alta & to shops & bus & train stations. Friendly, helpful staff. Allowed to check in early & got free upgrade! Great choice for breakfast.
Review 113:Only within walking distance from a main train station which we used most days to get about. Lovely walk or short ride on the funicular up to the Citta Alta, lots of shops and plenty of places to eat. Very interesting City. Definitely going back there.
Review 114:Little old building, but it's also some kind of the spirit of the place
Review 115:Location - easy connection by bus from the airport, walking distance to funicular to Cita Alta, nice pubs around the hotel. Free upgrade to superior room with beautiful view of the city. Sky sports TV channels. Very good breakfast. We'll be back :)
Review 116:The location second to none.Staff could not be more helpful. Have stayed in quite a lot of hotels and could only compare the comfort and cleanliness as that of a 5*
Review 117:Small room (we had a superior room - I cannot imagine what a standard room would be). Luggage deposit room not controlled by staff.
Review 118:Hotel very clean, close to town centre and the cable car for "Bergamo Alto". Staff helpful, breakfast quite good, bed comfortable, wifi everywhere.
Review 119:Old nasty hotel, overpriced. Really bad experience. Only reason i booked was visit of michelin star restaurant/ roof garden. Restaurant lost star last year and i am not surprised.
Review 120:Nothing
Review 121:The receptionist offered us to call a taxi taking us to the airport. At the airport we had to pay €25 for 5 minutes around 3km service. :-( Not too fair!
Review 122:The hotel was nice. Good view. Clean and comfortable.
Review 123:The room lacked an iron and an ironing board, I did not need it that bad, but this should be a standard for 4* hotels
Review 124:The location was prime, the service was excellent, they even provided me on request with wine glasses. The breakfast delicious and the sauna was a nice treat. The bathtub is amazing
Review 125:Nice hot room with big comfortable bed...toilet was also looking luxury!!!veryyy good location just some steps from the beginning of old city...breakfast good quality!!!
Review 126:Not getting to see the rooftop restaurant as it closed for holidays, one very flat pillow brought the comfort quality to good rather than excellent.
Review 127:The best breakfast we had in Italy, choice was great and was nice to have fresh fruit. Great location between the train station and access to the upper town. Highly recommend this hotel.
Review 128:Our room was a little tired looking. The otherwise decent breakfast was let down by awful coffee. The bar service was very slow - not the barman's fault, as he had to be called each time from wherever he was..upper town maybe?
Review 129:Nice reception/lobby & breakfast areas. Great location between the centres of the upper and lower towns.
Review 130:A great position for exploring old town and new town. Spacious lobby, attractive quiet rooms. Breakfast very good in a pleasant room with excellent views
Review 131:The cable car that takes you to the old city is a few minutes walk. A few minutes walk in the opposite direction and your in the new town, bus station & Railway Station. Milan only 60 minutes from Bergamo by train.
The Fine Print
